How to write essays on sacrifice?

The majority of students have to write essays on a regular basis. The main thing is not just to write some information on the topic in question but also to make it interesting and attract the attention of a potential reader starting from the first sentence. We have prepared all the useful information on essay writing so that you can craft a decent paper.

The following details should be taken into account while writing an essay about sacrifice:

  • The topicality of the problem under consideration. The issues raised should be relevant to the modern world or interesting if you are writing about a history of the subject.
  • Personal opinion. You will need to explain your stance on the problem and back it up with information you have found in the literary sources.
  • Small volume. There are no strict boundaries when it comes to the length of an essay, but 2-5 pages of text will likely be enough. Ask your professor about the word limit or simply request a rubric if you aren’t sure.
  • Narrow focus. Only one issue or problem may be considered within the framework of the essay. There cannot be many different topics or ideas discussed within one assignment as you will not be able to cover any of them properly.

Sacrifice essay outline

In general, the essay has quite a specific structure:

  • Sacrifice essay introduction. This part should set the mood of the whole paper, bring the reader’s attention to the issue under consideration, and consequently prompt him or her to read the text to the end. The most important aspect of intro is a thesis statement, which bears the main idea you are going to discuss.
  • The main part. Here, it is necessary to elaborate on the points put forward in a thesis statement using factual information found in credible sources. However, you should not operate with facts alone – add your analysis of what you have read and address the contradictions in sources if any. Please note that you need to devote at least one paragraph to each point made in the thesis to effectively cover it.
  • By summarizing what has been said in the main part, you will draw a general sacrifice essay conclusion. If the goal of the introduction is to attract attention, then that of the conclusion is to ensure integrity of the overall paper and leave no doubts about the legitimacy or viability of the ideas expressed in the body of the paper. How to wrap up an essay about sacrifice so that your reader has a good impression? Leave him or her some food for thought!

Brainstorming sacrifice essay titles

The last thing you need to do after you are done with your paper is create a good title for a sacrifice essay. At this point, you will already know the subject under the research perfectly, which will make it easier to come up with a short title that will show what exactly you have reviewed in the paper. Use your thesis statement to guide yourself, and think about some common phrases people use when talking about the topic to rework them into your title.

  • Speak you mind. This particular type of writing gives you an opportunity to say what you really think about the topic. Make your voice heard in your sacrifice essay!
  • Mind your language. It’s very important to find a balance as your language should be neither too scientific nor too elevated. Slang words are not acceptable as well – try writing as if you are having a conversation with your professor and are trying to sound convincing.

The concept of sacrifice is central to many religious traditions and also has an important place in secular societies. It is often considered a noble thing: The word “sacrifice” comes from the Latin sacrificium, which meant the performance of sacred rites in exchange for something or on someone’s behalf. This etymology implies that sacrifices are performed for the sake of something else, and usually to please a god or spirit.

Essay on Sacrifice & its Importance in Life

Sacrifice is a word with many meanings. In everyday usage, it refers to any event in which someone gives up something that he or she values highly for the sake of something else regarded as more important or worthy. It can be defined as an act of giving up something highly valued, but it also means the surrendering of goods and property.

It is an act or instance of surrendering something, for example a battle or one’s life, especially to the enemy under the compulsion of direst necessity. It is an inconvenience or difficulty that causes someone to suffer so as to achieve a desired result.

Types of Sacrifice

Personal sacrifice – this means sacrificing for other people rather than sacrificing for self. Personal sacrifices can be made through giving time, energy or money Personal sacrifice usually involves doing things that do not benefit you at all but give you inner satisfaction about helping others. The second type of sacrifice is religious sacrifice, which is associated with piety.

This type of sacrifice is mainly practiced at temples or places of worship. It involves offering items such as food, money or other valuables to please a god or an idol in the hope of getting some thing valuable in return for example prosperity and good luck in life. The third one is sacrifice in war which means giving up something very important for your country i.e., your people’s safety by sacrificing your life for them.

Finally, the fourth type is self-sacrifice which means giving up something of yours without any hope of getting anything valuable in return i.e., example when you give your life to save others or you jump before a moving train so that the people behind you can live their lives happily.

Value of Sacrifice in Life

In life, we need to put some value on things, if you want something more valuable in return for a less valued thing you sacrifice it. Example: when we go shopping with our mom and we see the most beautiful dress we ever saw in our lives and we really like it and ask our mothers can I buy that?

And she says no, because you have a lot of clothes at home and if we buy that one dress now, then we will need to sacrifice something else which was much valuable or needed more. Sacrifice is a way to distribute limited resources across competing needs.

Importance of Sacrifice

Sacrifice means to make a sacrifice and offering up. It can be an animal, goods or property that is sacrificed. A sacrifice may also mean that you put forward your own interests in favor of someone else’s interest or well-being. The act of sacrificing something such as time, comfort, money etc., for the sake of achieving something more important.

Example of sacrifice is you are hungry and want some delicious food, but your mother wants you to study for exams, so the benefit of getting the delicious food goes out of window as you choose to study.

Benefits of Sacrifice

It mean that something more valuable will be achieved through sacrificing what is less valued or giving up something. In an employee’s point of view, they perform extra work in order to receive a promotion or a reward, the reward is something valuable it means you don’t have to sacrifice but receive more valuable things in return.

In the corporate world, you have to put yourself ahead of your company and do some very hard tasks that others may not do, this is because it will make you more valuable and help your company to grow. For achieving something valuable or increasing the value of an object we need to sacrifice something.

In today’s time we see everything seems to be getting expensive and difficult for us that our basic needs are no longer fulfilled, because we spend most of our money on some unimportant things that has no benefit to us. A lot of self-sacrifice is required in order to bring some changes in our lives, be it the personal life or the professional life.

A Tale of Two Cities

Charles dickens, everything you need for every book you read..

Tyranny and Revolution Theme Icon

A Tale of Two Cities is full of examples of sacrifice, on both a personal and national level. Dr. Manette sacrifices his freedom in order to preserve his integrity. Charles sacrifices his family wealth and heritage in order to live a life free of guilt for his family's awful behavior. The French people are willing to sacrifice their own lives to free themselves from tyranny. In each case, Dickens suggests that, while painful in the short term, sacrifice leads to future strength and happiness. Dr. Manette is reunited with his daughter and gains a position of power in the French Revolution because of his earlier incarceration in the Bastille. Charles wins the love of Lucie. And France, Dickens suggests at the end of the novel, will emerge from its terrible and bloody revolution to a future of peace and prosperity.

Yet none of these sacrifices can match the most important sacrifice in the novel—Sydney Carton's decision to sacrifice his life in order to save the lives of Lucie, Charles, and their family. The other characters' actions fit into the secular definition of "sacrifice," in which a person gives something up for noble reasons. Carton's sacrifice fits the Christian definition of the word. In Christianity, God sacrifices his son Jesus in order to redeem mankind from sin. Carton's sacrifice breaks the grip of fate and history that holds Charles, Lucie, Dr. Manette, and even, as the novel suggests, the revolutionaries.

Military Families and Their Sacrifices Essay

Being in a military is a hard task, yet having a family member that has joined the military and supporting them in their decision is, perhaps, even harder. The challenges that people in the military face on a daily basis are beyond excruciating, and knowing that one risks their life while meeting these challenges is unbelievably difficult. While the acts of heroism made by soldiers are not to be underrated, either, the great sacrifice of their families, who provide consistent support, are proud of their family members in the military, and put the needs of the state and its citizens before their own, deserve the recognition of their great sacrifice.

Watching family members leave to join the army and, possibly, go to war that may take their lives is a terrifying experience, yet the families of soldiers carry their burden with amazing strength and dignity. These families realize that soldiers consider the protection of their state and the people living in it as their duty, and, no matter how drastic the consequences might be, the courage of soldiers and their passion for justice is what keeps these families strong (Fallen US Soldiers, 2009).

It would be wrong to claim that positive attitude persists in military families. The ones that were not lucky enough and had to deal with the death of their loved ones admit that the pain of losing a family member is excruciating. The grief of the mothers and wives whose children and husbands became war casualties is sincere and profound, yet they continue to support the rest of the family members who are still willing to join the army. One might consider the situation irrational and barely sensible; however, it instead shows that, no matter how hard the challenges might be, standing firmly for what one believes in and providing support for the family members that are willing to make a difference is an incredibly brave decision to make.

The rare visits of soldiers mean that their families miss them incredibly. Indeed, while not being as agonizing as the necessity to deal with the death of a family member, short visits and the anguish may make the waiting a nearly impossible experience. However, the family members of soldiers show incredible strength by developing the ability to wait and feel proud of the passion that soldiers have for justice, peace, and safety of the community. The unique philosophy that helps military families survive and remain happy and positive is truly worth appreciation (Moelker, ‎Andres, Bowen, & Manigart, 2015).

Although the acts of heroism of the soldiers that serve in the military and defend the country should not be overlooked, either, the sacrifice of their families must be appreciated as well. The threat of losing a family member as a war casualty is beyond terrifying, and the devastating sorrow through which the families that suffered this loss are put cannot possibly be embraced. Therefore, while often being unnoticed and unspoken of, the sacrifices of military families must be appreciated and recognized.

More importantly, military families require the support of the state and community, which means that the communication process between the state and local authorities and military families should be improved. As a result, it will be possible to show the appreciation for the great sacrifice that these families have made.

ORDER PAPER LIKE THIS

The part of my life that is related to my education is very important, because I have come to actually realize, how much sacrifices I have to give for my education. And still, this process is going on, until I finally reach my career goal in the distant future. The closest people, who know me quite well, think that I am intelligent and gifted by nature, and, thus, attending a good private school would certainly add to my personal and professional growth. And yet, while reflecting on the topic, I was first thinking about the sacrifices that were required of me until this moment, and what I still have to give up in future, before I reach my desired goal in education. Many a time learning has put me in a situation that made me sacrifice a lot, and regrettably, these were the most important things in my life like the closest family members, a circle of friends, and even my traditional culture, too. More than ever before in my life, I am secretly searching for the answer to my only question now: am I losing my entire freedom during these years of intense studying, and am I fully sacrificing it for the sake of my education? Yes, it might be true - I must admit it. Every time I have to stick with the tight schedule of my classes, and I am not allowed to follow my own path in living my life to full. True, I have to wake at six o’clock every the morning to get ready for school, and after my classes are over, I need to spend the rest of my day doing lots of home work. This all leads me to a condition, when I must give up my close relationships with my family members. I do feel that I am surrendering that precious relationship of mine and a painful distance is starting to form between us. But then again, when I look at the big forfeits my parents took that I could have a chance of receiving a high-quality education, I finally understand that, in fact, my ultimate duty is the need to sacrifice for my education, as well. Apart from my day by day life at school, I am almost missing the various cultural festivals right now, with their common, traditional dancing and singing, in which I used to take part in. Although my school is closed during most of these festivals, either being cultural or religious, I am also aware that there is the quiz, for which I need to submit an assignment, just off the cultural weekend. So, instead of fully enjoying my cultural and religious festivals together with a couple of friends, I feel too much depressed because every time I am thinking about my school work, my quiz. This all makes me so nervous that, finally, I end up closing into my room and preparing for my assignment and the quiz. In the end, I admit to have lost my favorite festivals and I have also sacrificed gathering with my acquaintances at these events. The future that I see for me now comes no brighter at all. The condition for me would always remain the same - there would be no different situation, because in the near future the studying expenses are going to increase even more. This means that I will have to give up a lot of things due to my education, should I wish to become successful at studying in high school. To think about some benefits I could get from the hard work at school I believe that education is itself precious. Learning new things and gaining useful experience can only make me personally and mentally richer and stronger. Moreover, my new knowledge cannot be taken away from me, because it belongs only to me. I tend to believe that after graduation, sometime in future, there is a promise of a better life for me, with less hardships than my parents had. Therefore, I dare say that all the sacrifices made by me and my closest family members so far, were worth the efforts. My long-term aim, as I vision it right now, is to find my career path, follow it and, eventually, find a strong foundation in my life. To conclude with, the sunny side of the learning process is its significance and usefulness.

Elucidate the theme of sacrifice in the story ‘The Last Leaf’.

title for sacrifice essay

Discuss the theme of sacrifice in O’ Henry’s story ‘The Last Leaf’.

O Henry’s (William Sydney Porter) story “The Last Leaf” is all about an old man’s sacrifice for one blooming life. Johnsy and Sue were two young artists living together at the top of a brick house beneath which on the ground floor lived Behrman, an old man of over sixty. He too was a painter. But for several years, he had painted “nothing except now and then a daub in the line of commerce or advertising”. He also served as a model for the young artists in the colony and often talked of his coming masterpiece. On the other hand, the two girls, Johnsy and Sue, used to draw illustrations for magazine story and such.

After six months of setting up their studio, in November, pneumonia broke out in the colony. Johnsy was not spared. “She lay, scarcely moving, on her painted iron bedstead, looking through the small Dutch window-panes at the blank side of the next brick house.” According to the doctor, the chance of her survival was one in ten and the desire to live was the key. But Johnsy grew too weak physically and mentally too. The fever had left her mind morbid and full of strange fancies. She stared at the ivy vine that climbed up the brick wall of the other house and counting backward every time a decayed leaf was falling. She feared that she would die the moment the very last leaf fell.

In the meantime, Sue went downstairs to call Behrman for posing as a hermit to help her draw. There she told him of Johnsy’s ailment and horrible fancies. Behrman got angry hearing that and cried: “ Is dere people in de world mit der foolishness to die because leafs dey drop off from a confounded vine? ” This was because of his love for the two girls. Moreover he scoffed terribly at softness in anyone. Behrman also ‘regarded himself as especial mastiff-in-waiting to protect the two young artists in the studio above’. So, the moment he heard about Johnsy’s strange fancies and the doctor’s advice to make her mind positive and wanting to live, he probably made up his mind to do something. But that was not known till we heard about Behrman catching up serious pneumonia the next day. On the other hand, Johnsy was recovering from her fancy as the last ivy leaf never fell; it was still there even after the strong rain and wind in the night.

Old Behrman finally died that afternoon in the hospital, as the attack was acute. He had been out in the beating rain and fierce gusts of wind that night and thus caught the cold. The janitor found him helpless with pain in the morning. His shoes and clothing were wet through the icy cold. And they found a lantern, still lighted, a ladder that had been dragged from its place, and some scattered brushes, and a palette with green and yellow colours mixed on it. Though others could not imagine where he had been on such a dreadful night, Sue and Johnsy knew it well. Sue says — “ look out the window, dear, at the last ivy leaf on the wall. Didn’t you wonder why it never fluttered or moved when the wind blew? Ah, darling, it’s Behrman’s masterpiece — he painted it there the night that the last leaf fell .”

Behrman painted the last leaf so carefully and accurately to make it look original and help Johnsy recover from her wicked thought of death. He probably knew that he would get the cold and almost surely the pneumonia too. But still, he risked his own life for saving the life of Johnsy. This is a selfless sacrifice for a noble cause. He kept his promise of protecting the two young artists and also of painting his masterpiece.

A Critic’s Plea for Maximalism: ‘Crack Us Open Like Eggs’

In her first essay collection, Becca Rothfeld demonstrates that sometimes, more really is more.

ALL THINGS ARE TOO SMALL: Essays in Praise of Excess , by Becca Rothfeld

The essays I love favor abundance over economy, performance over persuasion. Zadie Smith’s exemplary “Speaking in Tongues” juggles Barack Obama, Shakespeare, Shaw’s “Pygmalion,” Pauline Kael on Cary Grant, Thomas Macaulay on the Marquess of Halifax and her own “silly posh” speaking voice. Its modest argument, that “flexibility of voice leads to a flexibility in all things,” disappears into the spectacle of a nimble mind reveling in its omnivorous erudition.

The critic Becca Rothfeld’s first collection, “All Things Are Too Small: Essays in Praise of Excess,” is splendidly immodest in its neo-Romantic agenda — to tear down minimalism and puritanism in its many current varieties — but, like Smith, she makes her strongest case in her essays’ very form, a carnival of high-low allusion and analysis. Macaulay, Cary Grant, Obama and a posh accent? Rothfeld will see you and raise you: How about Simone Weil, Aristotle, “Troll 2,” Lionel Trilling, Hadewijch of Brabant (from whom she takes her title), serial killer procedurals, Proust and the Talmud? Not that she neglects Cary Grant; in an essay on love and equality, she filters a smart reading of “His Girl Friday” through the philosopher Stanley Cavell.

Cynthia Ozick (who ought to know) has favorably — and justly — compared Rothfeld to “the legendary New York intellectuals,” though Rothfeld lives in D.C., where she’s the nonfiction book critic for The Washington Post. She’s also an editor at The Point, a contributing editor at The Boston Review, and has published in The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, The Nation, The Atlantic, The Baffler and The British Journal of Aesthetics. Of course she also has a Substack, and she declares on her website — which links to many splendid pieces not collected in this book — that she’s “perhaps delusionally convinced” she’ll eventually finish her Harvard Ph.D. dissertation in philosophy.

The costive and the envious might wonder if she’s spreading herself too thin, but Rothfeld’s rigor and eloquence suggest that in her case, as the title of one essay has it, “More Is More.” That piece begins in dispraise of “professional declutterers” such as Marie Kondo, whose aesthetic amounts to “solipsism spatialized,” and from whose dream houses “evidence of habitation — and, in particular, evidence of the body, with its many leaky indecencies — has been eliminated.”

But it soon morphs into dispraise of minimalist prose and the “impoverished non-novels” of fashionable writers including Jenny Offill, Ottessa Moshfegh and Kate Zambreno, whose “anti-narratives are soothingly tractable, made up of sentences so short that they are often left to complete themselves.”

Rothfeld, by contrast, leaves no phrase unturned. Her maximalist prose abounds in alliteration — “I recommend bingeing to bursting,” she writes, exhorting us to “savor the slivers of salvation hidden in all that hideous hunger” — as well as such old-school locutions as “pray tell” and “cannot but be offensive.” If these mannerisms sit uneasily next to her f-worded celebrations of sexuality, the dissonance is deliberate, and the unease is a matter of principle.

In “Wherever You Go, You Could Leave,” a takedown of “mindfulness,” Rothfeld reports that when she “decided to live” after a suicide attempt in her first year of college, she rejected the soothing blankness of meditation and concluded that “perturbation is a small price to pay for the privilege of a point of view.”

Despite her disdain for “professional opinion-havers” — among them the columnist Christine Emba, lately also of The Washington Post — she doesn’t mind laying down the law. In the book’s longest essay, “Only Mercy: Sex After Consent,” Rothfeld taxes Emba, author of the best-selling “Rethinking Sex,” with an “appalling incomprehension of what good sex is like.”

So, pray tell. “We should choke, crawl, spank, spew, and above all, surrender furiously, until the sheer smack of sex becomes its own profuse excuse for being.” Some sexual encounters, she continues, “crack us open like eggs” and “we should not be willing to live without them.”

We-shoulding is an occupational hazard of opinion-having, but we need take these pronouncements no more — and no less — to heart than Rothfeld’s paradoxical admiration for both the “beatifically stylized” films of Éric Rohmer and the “magnificently demented” oeuvre of David Cronenberg. Do we agree or disagree with her that Sally Rooney’s novels are overpraised, and that Norman Rush’s “Mating” is really “one of the most perfect novels of the past half century”?

More to the point, do we agree that “the aesthetic resides in excess and aimlessness,” and that extravagance is “our human due”? I’d say no to the former and yes to the latter, but who cares? What counts in these essays is the exhilarating ride, not the sometimes-dodgy destination. William Blake wrote that the road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom; Rothfeld might say that they’re one and the same. No argument there.

The Familiar

By Leigh Bardugo Flatiron Books $29.99 April 2024 Purchase

title for sacrifice essay

From the publisher : In a shabby house, on a shabby street, in the new capital of Madrid, Luzia Cotado uses scraps of magic to get through her days of endless toil as a scullion. But when her scheming mistress discovers the lump of a servant cowering in the kitchen is actually hiding a talent for little miracles, she demands Luzia use those gifts to improve the family’s social position.

What begins as simple amusement for the nobility takes a perilous turn when Luzia garners the notice of Antonio Pérez, the disgraced secretary to Spain’s king. Still reeling from the defeat of his armada, the king is desperate for any advantage in the war against England’s heretic queen—and Pérez will stop at nothing to regain the king’s favor.

From Zane, bookseller: This is the first Leigh Bardugo book I’ve read (I’m sorry) and I’m still recommending it, so if your friend who is obsessed with “Ninth House” or “Hell Bent” or the “Grishaverse” says you should read this, just know that this one guy who works at this one bookstore who hasn’t read any of that also thinks so. Luzia is a conversa scullion in Golden Age Spain who can work miracles any wealthy man would kill for. In this violent age where women are deeply oppressed and the Inquisition will brutally punish anyone they determine has unholy power, hopefully those men won’t find out about her magic (oh no).

All Things Are Too Small: Essays in Praise of Excess

By Becca Rothfeld Metropolitan Books $27.99 April 2024 Purchase

title for sacrifice essay

From the publisher : Our embrace of minimalism has left us spiritually impoverished. We see it in our homes, where we bring in Marie Kondo to rid them of their idiosyncrasies and darknesses. We take up mindfulness to do the same thing to our heads, emptying them of the musings, thoughts, and obsessions that make us who we are. In the bedroom, a new wave of puritanism has drained sex of its unpredictability and therefore true eroticism. In our fictions, the quest for balance has given us protagonists who aspire only to excise their appetites. We have flipped our values, Rothfeld argues: While the gap between rich and poor yawns hideously wide, we strive to compensate with egalitarianism in art, erotics, and taste, where it does not belong and where it quashes wild experiments and exuberance.

From Dany, bookseller: Minimalism, fragment novels, the mindfulness industry, and desire. All these things seem at first a random string of topics, but are singularly connected by Becca Rothfeld and damn it! they are all just too small! With a plethora of unique and deep cut literary and film examples, Rothfeld presents her first collection of luscious essays which beg to be internalized and practiced by those who read them. With a personal flair, “All Things Are Too Small” is a genius exploration into our own souls. Stepping away from each essay one can’t help but utter: Wow, Becca Rothfeld just gets me.

By Jennifer Thorne Tor Nightfire $27.99 March 2024 Purchase

title for sacrifice essay

From the publisher : Jennifer Thorne skewers all-too-familiar family dynamics in this sly, wickedly funny vacation-Gothic. Beautifully unhinged and deeply satisfying, “Diavola”is a sharp twist on the classic haunted house story, exploring loneliness, belonging, and the seemingly inescapable bonds of family mythology. (Warning: May invoke feelings of irritation, dread, and despair that come with large family gatherings.)

From Allison, bookbuyer: The only genuinely scary horror novel I read when I was on my fall 2023 horror binge. Kept me up til 2 a.m. trying to finish it and a little spooked by my bathroom mirror for a week. While on vacation at a villa in Tuscany, Anna and her family are given one instruction: “Don’t open the door to the tower.” But, of course they do. The ghost in this is a nasty piece of work (almost demonic), and the family drama is so uncomfortably realistic.
