As we discovered through our VisualCV review , the paid plans offer a range of features like resume performance analytics, Google Doc integration, the ability to create a unique domain, and more. As per our Zety review, Zety is better than VisualCV in terms of document extraction as it offers a TXT format option in addition to PDF and Word. 

Zety vs. Resume Genius

Both Zety and Resume Genius provide cover letters and resume templates. Moreover, both provide solid customization options and helpful writing wizards. The two-week passes cost about the same as well. However, Zety resume reviews confirm that Zety is a cheaper option as Resume Genius renews at $39.95 a month. 

The price is worth it as you get a professional to write your resume. On Resume Genius, the preview option is possible only at the end of the resume creation, while you can preview your work throughout the process with Zety.

It also allows you to add pre-written phrases and save your document in multiple formats.

Some believe hiring managers barely glance at them. Whereas, some find it incredibly hard to tailor each cover letter to specific job positions and companies. 

Another widely common reason is that a lot of job seekers are too lazy to write one.

However, recruiters have a very different opinion. 

45% of recruiters believe that not attaching a cover letter along with your job application could instantly get you rejected. In fact, 26% read cover letters thoroughly and think they play an important role in the hiring decision.

According to recruiters/hiring managers, cover letters help them understand a candidate’s motivation, get a sense of their communication skills, and know their personality - these are things that a resume can’t convey effectively. 

A cover letter is an extension of a candidate’s resume. Even though not all recruiters read cover letters, the ones that do take them seriously. 

This means, if you don’t submit a cover letter along with your application, you’re likely to miss out on opportunities where it’s deemed crucial.

But Writing Cover Letters is So Time-Consuming, Right?

Yes, writing cover-letters is time-consuming. 

You need to modify your cover letter such that it aligns with each specific job role and the company's values and culture. To show hiring managers that you took the much-required effort to study the company and position. And list qualities or experiences that weren't explicitly mentioned in your resume.

Some even attach the same cover letter to every job application they submit. But my two cents - hiring managers can recognize a generic cover letter from a mile away. So don’t make this mistake.

Lastly, to increase the chances of landing a job, make sure your cover letter is well-formatted, free of grammatical or spelling errors, and concise.

For the sake of confidentiality, we replaced the company name with “XYZ” and other related information as well.

Sharing our experience with the top five cover letter generators 

Last month, we stress-tested the following cover-letter generators:

• Wordtune (Free & Paid)
• ResumeLab (Paid)
• Resume.io (Paid)
• CVShaper (Free)

Let’s dive into each one-by-one:

1. Zety (Paid)

Zety is a popular choice among job seekers for creating cover letters due to several reasons. Some of them are:

• Zety offers a user-friendly interface to make the entire process smooth and straightforward.
• The cover letter generator provides a wide range of templates to choose from. 
• They also have a vast library of resources, including examples and actionable tips, on their website to provide inspiration to job seekers.
• Zety’s Cover Letter Builder asks a variety of questions to help job seekers build relevant and impactful cover letters. 

Let’s give you a step-by-step breakdown of creating a cover letter using Zety:

First, launch Zety’s Cover Letter Builder .

Click “Create My Cover Letter.”

Enter your First and Last Name. And choose a template from the list.

Next, you’ll be given two options: 

• Create a New Cover Letter - start from scratch.
• Upload From Resume - Zety will take information from your resume. 

In this case, we’ll go with the first option “Create a New Cover Letter.”  

Feel free to go with the other option for yourself.

Once selected, click “Continue.”

 Zety’s Cover Letter Builder questionnaire is categorized into four groups:

• Target Jobs - in this category, I was asked if I had any specific job in mind and what the desired position was. Also, I was asked what my top three strengths are.

• Workstyle  - in this group, I was asked about my working style to match that style in my cover letter. This was my final input.

• Finalize: taking all inputs into consideration, Zety’s Cover Letter Generator took some time to generate a personalized cover letter for me. I was asked to sign up to Zety to download my Cover Letter.

Observations:

Here are my observations of generating a cover letter with Zety:

• Zety asked some relevant questions; however I personally felt that these questions were very basic. The cover letter generator could have asked better questions to personalize the cover letter even further.
• The Cover letter generated by Zety felt very generic. It didn’t show that the candidate had performed any research about the role or the company to create this letter.
• I wouldn’t use this cover letter just as-is. To increase my chances of landing the role, I would heavily edit it.
• Building my first cover letter with Zety took me five minutes. As I become more familiar with the interface and features, this time would decrease. However, even if it takes me three minutes, on average, to generate cover letters, I would still need to spend time editing it, as I personally didn’t like the text provided by Zety. 
• After signing up, you can customize your cover letter even further. However, when you choose the option to download it, you’ll be asked to subscribe to either their 14-Day Paid Trial or Monthly Access.

Overall, Zety is a decent cover letter generator that streamlines the cover letter generation process. It asks some relevant questions, is easy to use, has a great interface and offers a wide range of templates and customization options. 

From the design-front, I found Zety’s platform visually-appealing. 

The only reason why I’d not use the platform is because the letter wasn’t good enough to stand out in a competitive job market. 

Only if Zety gave me the option to list down some of my achievements (in the form of numbers) and share my research about the job title or company, then it would have truly personalized the letter for me.

2. Wordtune (Free & Paid)

Wordtune is an AI-powered cover letter generator that lets you build highly personalized cover letters for free. You can also use it to fine-tune and edit your existing drafts by suggesting improvements in tone, style, and grammar.

A few reasons why Wordtune is popular among job seekers are:

• It offers a user-friendly interface, making it super-easy to create and/or edit cover letters.
• Although Wordtune offers its own online text editor, you can still access its features within Google Docs, email, and other third-party platforms through its Chrome extension.
• Wordtune is free to use. This includes ten rewrites and spices, three summaries, and three AI prompts a day, and unlimited text corrections . To increase these numbers, you can consider upgrading to one of their premium plans.

Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of using Wordtune to create a cover letter:

First, log in to Wordtune. If you don’t have an account, sign up to get started. 

Click “New Document” inside Wordtune’s Editor. We’ll name it “Zapier Content Marketing Manager Cover Letter.”

Click “Generate with AI” as shown in the screenshot below.

You can either write a detailed prompt with the specifics about the role and company or you can select the “Cover Letter” template from Personal -> Cover Letter.

However, my personal preference is using prompts. So, I fed the following prompt to Wordtune:

Not to seem biased, but in my opinion, this is a very good cover letter text. I personally love how I was able to mention results I achieved for my past company and my experience leading a content team. 

You can use the “Refresh” button to generate another draft, in case you don’t like what you see in front of you.

Click “Done” if you’re satisfied with the draft. This will paste it inside Wordtune’s Editor. 

Now, you can fine-tune inside the Editor. Or if it’s ready to go, use a graphic design tool like Canva to design and customize the layout of your cover letter. 

One of the downsides of using Wordtune to generate cover letters is that the platform gives you the ability to design and customize your cover letter.

Considering that Wordtune's primary focus is on the content, this isn't a surprise. Our tool’s strength lies in generating tailor-made content using AI, ensuring that the narrative of your cover letter is persuasive, relevant, and aligned with the job requirements.

Here are my observations of generating a cover letter with Wordtune:

• I loved Wordtune’s user-friendly and intuitive interface. I was able to generate cover letter text in a matter of minutes. This is a big benefit for job seekers applying to multiple roles. 
• The cover letter generated by Wordtune felt highly personalized to me. By adding more specifics to my prompts, I could have generated an even better cover letter than this one. This cover letter highlighted my past achievements (a big plus point) and was tailored well to the role at Zapier.
• The ability to generate multiple drafts was a deal-breaker for me as I can use it to explore different variations and choose what suits me the best. 
• Even though Wordtune’s Editor is user-friendly, I love using Google Docs more. Wordtune lets you access its feature inside Google Docs using its Chrome Extension - which is another big plus point for me. Also, it eliminates the need to constantly switch between tabs or copy-paste content.
• One downside of using Wordtune to create a cover letter is that it doesn’t offer design tools or templates for visual customization. Users need to rely on tools like Canva for this aspect. 
• Alongside creation, Wordtune also lets you fine-tune and edit the AI-generated cover letter using its wide range of editing features - which is another plus point.

3. ResumeLab (Paid)

ResumeLab has dominated the market for years due to several reasons:

• The platform has an extremely user-friendly interface. In a few clicks, you can build yourself a powerful cover letter.
• ResumeLab offers a wide range of templates to choose from - whether it’s for CV, resume or cover letter.
• The platform offers multiple customization options available.

Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of generating a cover letter using ResumeLab:

First step: launch ResumeLab’s Cover Letter builder. Click “Make a Cover Letter Now.”

Next, you’ll see the three steps you need to follow to generate a cover letter.

Click “Get Started.”

The next step is to choose the template and color of your Cover Letter.

Here are the available color options:

You’ll also find three templates listed below. 

Click “Show all templates” to see all available template options.

Hover over the template you like and click “Choose a template.”

Now, ResumeLab will ask you to fill in your personal details like First Name, Last Name, Job Title, Email and Phone Number. As you fill these details, you’ll see them automatically being filled in the Preview on the right-hand side.

We filled in some dummy information for your reference.

Now, this is the step where you need to write your cover letter. This tool doesn’t have an AI feature that writes the cover letter for you. Nor does it ask you a series of questions to generate a personalized cover letter.

However, they have three cover letter text templates readily available:

• Entry-level: for entry level roles.
• Middle-level: for mid-tier roles.
• Senior-level: for senior-level roles.

You can choose from one of these templates based on your current career stage and the role you’re applying for. In our case, let’s select “Middle-level.”

Click “Auto-fill” under “Middle-level.”

As soon as you do, you’ll see the template below - in the “Letter content” section.

Even though these templates are good enough, they require heavy editing, so it’s a good idea to generate the cover letter text using Wordtune and use this text to generate your cover letter using ResumeLab.

You can also change the Application and Document languages by clicking “Change Language” on the right-hand side, just above preview. ResumeLab also lets you make several structural and visual customizations. Just click “Customize design.” 

Click “Finalize” once you’re done. This will take you to the final stage, i.e., Download the cover letter.

Click “Download cover letter.” If you’re not signed in, you need to log in/create a new account, as you can’t download the cover letter without signing in.

• ResumeLab offers a wide range of templates and customization options. And considering the extremely low price point, I think it’s a steal-deal.
• The platform is so easy to use and I just fell in love with its user-friendly interface.
• The only downside is that you can’t really generate ready-to-go cover letter text using ResumeLab. Even though the platform offers a few templates, they don’t cut to the chase. If I were to use ResumeLab, I’d generate text using Wordtune and use ResumeLab for the design part.

4. Resume.io (Paid)

Resume.io is another popular choice among job seekers for cover letter generation because:

• The platform offers a wide range of customizable cover letter templates, including ones approved by HRs at top-tier companies.
• Resume.io is extremely easy to use and has a user-friendly interface. 
• It fetches basic details directly from your social media profiles - which is a bonus point.
• Resume.io also offers its Resume Builder and several other tools you can use to level up your career.

Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of generating a cover letter using Resume.io:

Head over to Resume.io’s Cover Letter Builder. Click “Create Cover Letter” to get started.

Choose a template for your cover letter. Here, both free and Paid templates are available to choose from. The paid ones are marked with a Premium icon. But here, in our case, we’ll select a free one.

Once picked, select “Use This Template.”

• From the design-front, Resume.io is a great cover letter generator; however due to its lack of text-generation, it falls short of my expectations.
• If you’re looking for a cover letter generator that writes and also designs a cover letter for you, Resume.io may not be the right fit.

Here are my observations and an honest review of generating a cover letter with Zety:

• CVShaper's questionnaire did touch upon some relevant areas; yet, in my personal opinion, the depth was somewhat lacking. There's potential for the platform to delve deeper, asking questions that would ensure a more bespoke and tailored cover letter.
• The output from CVShaper had a distinct templated feel. While it managed to hit the standard points, it lacked the nuances that show a candidate's specific insight into a company or the particular role they're applying for.
• As it stands, I wouldn't forward the generated cover letter without revisions. To bolster my chances of catching a recruiter's attention, substantial edits would be necessary.
• CVShaper doesn’t provide a wide range of cover letter templates to choose from. The output’s design is pretty generic, which may not really be appealing to those looking for a more unique and personalized touch.

First of all, there’s a nice selection of templates. And the drag-and-drop interface allowed me to easily add and rearrange sections as needed.

In addition to a resume, I was able to create a public profile, which I linked my LinkedIn profile to. It was then easy to generate links to both my profile and my resume that could easily be shared.

The only downside of CakeResume is that you can just build one basic resume using their free version.

Now for the negatives. Overall, I didn’t feel that this resume builder was flexible enough. For example, next to each resume skill you must add your experience level. I didn’t want that option but there’s no way to turn it off.

The education section was also limited (no option to choose MBA?). Plus, the ability to manually edit entries is limited as well.

But perhaps the biggest issue I had with this resume builder was that it doesn’t save your work! Although they do warn you with this message, “Your information will not be saved when this browser tab is closed.”

I never knew it, as I never got an invoice for them from a year neither checked my card as am a new mom and shop daily in more than 4 stores. I only realizes by accident while at home sick, that this Zety is not a local store I thought it was all this time. 1 year!!! Of money in an account I never used. And no chance to get an answer. How is their website full of experts incapable of sending you an invoice for stealing your money. Must be my only ever similar experience. Later edit. I got a refund of 1 and a half month worth of membership. I asked for a year, the whole year I never was invoiced in, so never knew I was being charged for this platform and not my groceries.

Disappointing Experience with Zety.com: Issues with Charges and Customer Service

I've observed that there are responses and comments from Zety employees only on positive reviews. However, there are no replies or acknowledgments on negative reviews. If Zety has areas of improvement, the company should engage with those who have had negative experiences and work towards resolving their concerns. My personal experience with Zety has been disappointing. After registering on the site, I created and downloaded my resume, paying a fee of $1.07. Several weeks later, I discovered that my credit card had been charged without my knowledge. It turns out Zety had placed a pre-authorization hold on my card, as they apparently did with other customers. I have requested a refund and am currently awaiting a response, as are others facing similar issues.

Great for job applications and easy to use.

I am a younger teen using Zety to help me apply for jobs, and I found it very easy to use - and very helpful. It served it's purpose quite well and helped me make important adjustments to my resume. One minor problem though, if you make your resume in google docs and format it a certain way, Zety won't be able to read it well - and it'll recommend more than 20 fixes. Just don't worry about that though, the cover letter building is great and easy to use - while everything from the dashboard and accessing your profile is even easier. I recommend this for sure!

Zety really is a great service and I didn't mind having to pay to get my resume, as their service did make it better. I just don't want to pay a subscription service for something that doesn't necessarily need to be updated all too often.

Choosing the right resume builder for you and your CV can be a struggle. I wanted to test each of them so you don’t have to waste your precious time.

To begin with, for all of the Zety’s resume templates, you have to pay. In return, this is what you get:

What I liked about this resume builder:

• Impressive auto-suggestion feature which comes handy when writing the section about work experience and skills.
• Very good guides and resume content (and it’s available to anyone without having to sign up for it).
• Clean templates that are well-constructed, simple, and no-nonsense.
• Resume score. Once you’re done, Zety will score your resume and tell you how you can make it better. (But from my experience, this is a bit hit or miss.)

What I didn’t like about this resume builder:

• Clunky copy&paste. The rich text editor started acting up on me when I tried to copy-paste my information into it.
• Confusing UI. It’s easy to get lost in the interface sometimes.
• Not-so-smart editor. The editor was sometimes trying to be too clever but ended up being stupid (e.g. forced capitalization in “University Of Amsterdam”).
• No page breaks. In the preview, the resume page seems to continue indefinitely, not giving you a proper idea of what it is going to look like when printing it out.
• Unsuitable for creatives. All templates have a very similar, conservative, and rather a dry vibe. That doesn’t have to be a bad thing. On the other hand, if you’re looking to create a resume that’s a bit more “out there”, you should probably look elsewhere.
• Poor customization options. In most cases, you can only change the color of some parts of your resume.
• Little misleading. Zety allows you to create a whole resume for free but in the end, you cannot download it unless you pay.

3. VisualCV

Onto the next one!

• Live preview. You can edit your resume directly in the live preview if you want.
• Rich text copy/paste works flawlessly and there are no hiccups.
• Varied templates. A nice, varied collection of templates.
• Customization options. Templates are customizable. I was even able to change paragraph margins, which is quite rare.
• Clear webpage information. All the information was easy to find.
• Sometimes, the template construction was confusing. It wasn’t always clear what some of the buttons do. Because of that, I accidentally deleted my content twice. But that could just be me.

4. ResumeGenius

Another paid resume maker website!

• I liked how it encourages you to mention your extracurricular activities, GPA, and awards when filling in the Education section.
• MS Word download. Some people may like the option to download their resume in the MS Word format and not in PDF
• 1 on 1 help. They offer “1 on 1 help from an experienced career consultant”. That’s something that no other resume builder offers. On the other hand, I'm not sure how expensive it is.
• Step-by-step editor. Instead of allowing me to enter all my information at once, it required me to fill it in step-by-step. This has quickly become time-consuming, as I had to go through every single possible section, whether I wanted to include it or not. And it made me do it every time I wanted to make changes to my resume.
• Preview possible only at the end. I was able to see a preview of my resume only AFTER I had given them all my information. I hated this.
• Couldn't leave any fields blank. Why can’t I leave the “State/Province” field blank? It just wouldn’t let me. Not every country is divided into states or provinces. Also, it required me to enter my home address even though I wanted to leave that field blank. Fortunately, it didn’t check if the address was real. 
• No rich text formatting. Okay, I’m going to say it one more time and more clearly: I honestly really hated this editor. It’s clunky and doesn’t support rich text editing. I guess Resume Genius was not that genius after all.

What I liked about this completely free resume builder website:

• Classic look. Classic templates that make great use of basic typography.
• Emphasis on content. The templates put more emphasis on how your information is organized, instead of being visually stunning. The templates are organized into four categories: Experience, Education, Skill, and Personality, depending on which one you want to emphasize.
• It's completely free. 
• Color of the interface. Oh man, that purple-ish color. I almost got a headache just looking at it. But who knows, could be your cup of tea.
• Broken copy&paste. The text editor started acting up when I tried to copy/paste.
• No page break. The preview screen doesn’t show you what your resume is going to look like after printing.
• Step-by-step editor. Yet another resume builder with a step-by-step editor. I would prefer to be able to edit all parts of my resume on a single screen.
• Not visually appealing. The resume templates are not what you’d expect them to be. They don’t have much to offer in terms of visuals
• Lack of support and guidance.

6. Resume.io

What I liked about this paid resume builder:

• UI navigation. The progress bar at the top of the page allows you to see exactly where you are and what you need to do before you can download your resume.
• Live preview. You can see the changes you make to your resume in real-time. Almost no other resume builder has that.
• Excellent editor. It suffered from none of the problems other resume builders did.
• High level of polish. UI and its high level of polish
• Forces you to sign up from the get-go. It doesn’t let you create a resume without signing up first. On the other hand, it allows you to save any changes you make to your resume.
• Limited customization options. The resume builder only lets you change the color of a template and font size.
• A small number of templates. Only has 12 and, as I've already mentioned, you can't even customize these.

What I like about this paid resume builder:

• Template recommendations. They recommended me specific templates based on my years of experience. Also, the templates were organized into categories, such as “traditional”, “modern”, and “creative”.
• PDF import. You can import your resume from a PDF file. It’s not perfect but it works quite well.
• Nicer templates than Zety. Although it’s the same resume builder as Zety, in my opinion, this one had nicer resume templates.
• Almost identical to Zety. There are minor differences but none of them justify separate branding.
• The same editor as Zety. Since it’s the same rich text editor, it’s no wonder that it started acting up as soon as I tried to copy/paste my information. 
• It's Zety with different templates. I’m not going to include any more upsides or downsides since it’s the same thing as Zety, apart from the templates.

What I liked about this (completely free) resume builder:

• Design-driven. Canva is not exactly a resume builder. Instead, it's a graphic design software that designs stuff when you don’t want to pay for a graphic designer. It's really pretty.
• It’s free. That is unless you decide to pay for a premium subscription. Still, all resume-related features are free. 
• Super large number of templates. I tried to count the number of resume templates. I couldn’t. There are too many.
• Limitless customization. Canva is great if you already know what you’re doing and only seek to give your already perfect resume a nice visual boost.

What I don’t like about this resume builder:

• It's not a resume builder per se. Sure, it can be used to create nice resumes or cover letters. Still, if you decide to use it, you’d be missing out on many career-specific features like proofreading, career-oriented customer support, pre-written phrases for your resume, guides, etc.
• Is it ATS-ready? Would a resume created with Canva pass through an applicant tracking system (ATS)? I can’t be sure.
• No career tools or resume-specific features.
• No rich text copy-paste. When I tried to copy and paste my information, it didn’t preserve my formatting.
• Overwhelming and easy to make a mistake. It’s VERY easy to make your resume look bad if you’re not careful. In fact, sometimes I wished I had fewer customization options.
• More difficult to navigate in comparison to other resume tools.

9. Novoresume

What I liked about this (mostly) free resume builder:

• Live preview. I could edit my resume directly from the live preview screen.
• Holds your hand. If this was my first time writing a resume, I would have appreciated Novoresume’s advice. If you’re a beginner, they can be very helpful.
• Built-in feedback. I loved Novoresume’s “Content Optimizer”. It analyzed my resume and suggested possible improvements.
• Resume management. Novoresume also allowed me to save individual parts of my newly created resume in case I’d like to create versions customized for specific employers. Actually, Novoresume had the best resume management tools out of all resume builders in this test.
• Labeled premium features. All premium features were clearly labeled and I was able to avoid using them since I wanted to create a free resume.
• Customization options. There's a lot of them!
• Sometimes too "helpful". The editor was trying to help me by structuring the work experience section. Unfortunately, that was more of a hindrance than a help.
• No rich text copy-paste. Yet again, the rich text copy and paste didn’t work.
• Character limit in certain sections. It wouldn’t let me enter as much text as I wanted where I wanted.
• A small number of resume templates. Although I have to say, this is to some extent mitigated by your ability to customize each of them.

And finally, the last resume tool website! Despite its name, CakeResume is not really a resume builder. Instead, it will help you create an online career profile similar to LinkedIn.

• The personal profile. First, you create a “profile” where you enter all your information. Once you’ve done that, you don’t have to do it ever again. It’s somewhat similar to what Novoresume.
• The editor. CakeResume’s editor is, well, satisfying. You begin with a blank page onto which you drag and drop various resume snippets.
• Online resume. You can either download your resume as a PDF file or get a shareable link.
• No rich text copy-paste. At this point, I consider that the norm.
• Missing keyboard shortcuts.  Every time I wanted to make a part of the text bold, I had to click on an icon at the top of the screen.
• Basic in terms of visuals. CakeResume’s default template works well, but if you’d like to make your resume a bit more visually appealing, you may want to look elsewhere.
