Here are our picks for the best SBS On Demand movies .

All Quiet on the Western Front

All Quiet on the Western Front

Director: Delbert Mann Starring: Richard Thomas, Ernest Borgnine Genre: Drama, War Released: 1979

Based on the classic 1928 novel of the same name, this 1979 movie adaptation follows a young German soldier, Paul, as he’s sent off to fight in WWI. It primarily follows Paul’s experiences of the war, and how he deals with the majority of his school friends being wounded or killed along the way.

Originally produced for television, All Quiet on the Western Front is now one of the best SBS On Demand movies for fans of the war genre. Netflix has just released their own film adaptation of this classic, but this one still holds up… and is free to watch. Just saying.

The Big Short

The Big Short

Director: Adam McKay Starring: Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt Genre: Biography, Comedy, Drama Released: 2015

Told through an ensemble cast of Hollywood’s heaviest hitters such as Ryan Gosling (Drive, The Nice Guys), Brad Pitt ( Troy, Ocean’s Eleven ), Steve Carell ( The 40-Year-Old Virgin, The Office ) and Christian Bale ( The Dark Knight, American Psycho ), The Big Short is a thought-provoking dark comedy detailing the events of the 2008 Financial Crash and the few people who made millions of dollars off the back of people losing their entire livelihoods.

The film was a stylistic anomaly, using real-life experts and celebrities (and an intermittent Margot Robbie sitting in a bathtub) to break up the narrative and explain complex financial terms and practices throughout the film. It’s no wonder it won the Oscar and BAFTA for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Boiling Point

Boiling Point

Director: Philip Barantini Starring:  Stephen Graham, Vinette Robinson, Ray Panthaki Genre:  Drama Released:  2021

Before  The Bear introduced the regular population to the intense and often brutal world behind the kitchen doors of every restaurant, BBC’s Boiling Point,  starring Stephen Graham ( This is England ) hit English screens and served a deeply confronting and claustrophobic story of life in hospitality.

Following the experiences of a beleaguered head chef as he faces the mounting pressures and challenges of running a high-end London restaurant, Boiling Point  shows, in real-time, just what it takes to keep your head above water and the devastating effect of going under.

It’s now been adapted into a critically acclaimed series, which is now available on Binge.

Another Round

Another Round

Director: Thomas Vinterberg Starring: Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen Genre: Comedy, Drama Released: 2020

Everyone’s favourite Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale ) stars in Another Round , a black comedy-drama that follows a group of four teachers at a gymnasium in Copenhagen. Following a night of celebrating, the foursome decides they are going to start drinking during their working day to see how it affects their productivity, as well as their social lives away from the gym. Naturally, things go downhill pretty quickly.

If anything, Another Round is a perfect analysis of the prototypical male midlife crisis and one of the best movies on SBS On Demand right now.

Layer Cake

Director: Matthew Vaughn Starring: Daniel Craig, Genre: Crime, Thriller Released: 2004

Before the resounding success of playing one of cinema’s most iconic and beloved characters, James Bond , Daniel Craig was making his name in gritty British crime movies as a nameless drug dealer looking to score big on his final job.

Directed by Matthew Vaughn, the celebrated British director best known for the Kingsman movie franchise, Kick-Ass and the upcoming spy thriller Argyle starring Henry Cavill, Layer Cake  is a modern gangster story which, as the name would suggest, follows a complicated narrative that often twists and turns, following the levels (or layers) one must go through in business to rise to the top.

This is a must-watch.

Beyond the Wasteland

Beyond the Wasteland

Director: Eddie Beyrouthy Starring: Bertrand Cadart, Jim ‘The TANK’ Dorsey Genre: Documentary Released: 2022

Beyond the Wasteland is a documentary that explores and celebrates the mad fans of Mad Max , the Australian action classic that made Mel Gibson a star, George Miller a sought-after director, and has amassed a cult following all over the world.

Directed by Eddie Beyrouthy, and featuring interviews with the cast from the 1979 Mad Max film as well as fans from the US, Japan, France and more, Beyond the Wasteland also delves into the impact Mad Max has had on pop and car culture.

The Father

Director: Florian Zeller Starring: Anthony Hopkins, Olivia Coleman Genre: Drama Released: 2021

Directed by French playwright Florian Zeller and adapted from his 2012 play of the same name,  The Father is a psychological drama starring Anthony Hopkins in the eponymous role as a retiree with dementia struggling to come to grips with the nature of reality.

The Father has received widespread critical acclaim, with 83-year-old Hopkins netting himself (only) his second Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance, making him the oldest Best Actor winner ever. An unflinching yet gripping portrayal of the confusion of dementia, it’s a complex and finely wrought film that’s a must-watch on SBS On Demand.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Director: Taika Waititi Starring: Julian Dennison, Sam Neill Genre: Adventure, Comedy Released: 2016

A New Zealand set and made comedy adventure, Hunt for the Wilderpeople stars Julian Dennison as a rebellious kid and Sam Neill as his grumpy foster uncle, a mismatched pair who become the target of a manhunt when they go missing in the wild.

The film that introduced director Taika Waititi to Hollywood, Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a charming and energetic comedy that has a strong emotional core and fantastic performances.

Sound of Metal

Sound of Metal

Director: Darius Marder Starring: Riz Ahmed, Olivia Cooke, Paul Raci Genre:  Drama Released: 2019

Widely considered to be Riz Ahmed’s best performance of his already storied career,  Sound of Metal is a confronting and powerful drama that reflects on the true impact of loss of hearing and disability.

Told through a rich and layered soundtrack, Ahmed’s standout performance as a heavy metal drummer who is slowly going deaf highlights the adversity suffered by those who live with disability and the stages of anger, denial and acceptance as the inevitable occurs.

Drive

Director: Nicolas Winding Refn Starring: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston Genre: Crime, Thriller Released: 2011

Ryan Gosling is just one of those actors who adds an effortless dimension of cool to whichever movie he stars in; from Blade Runner 2049 to The Nice Guys , Gosling has this profound ability to elevate the experience of the movie, and Drive is no different.

First released in 2011, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive is widely considered to be a modern masterpiece; it’s a visually stunning neo-noir crime thriller with electric high-speed action all against the neon-lit backdrop of Los Angeles.

Ryan Gosling excels as a Hollywood stuntman and getaway driver who finds himself entangled in the dangerous and violent criminal underworld whilst protecting his neighbour and her young son. It’s one of those movies that you wish had a sequel.

Parasite

Director: Boon Joon-ho Starring: Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun Genre: Crime , Thriller Released: 2019

Funny, biting and dark in equal measure, Parasite is a South Korean black comedy thriller film directed by Bong Joon-ho that follows a poor family who weasels their way into the life of a wealthy family – with deadly consequences.

You’ve probably heard of Parasite as it’s one of the most acclaimed films in recent memory, having cleaned up four Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film, becoming the first non-English-language film to win Best Picture. In short? It’s worth the hype, and one of SBS On Demand’s real gems.

The Way Of The Dragon

The Way Of The Dragon

Director: Bruce Lee Starring: Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris Genre: Action, Comedy Released: 1974

SBS On Demand has added a few Bruce Lee movies to its library recently, but it’s The Way Of The Dragon that we’ve picked out. The only movie that Bruce Lee directed himself and the last one released during his lifetime, this action-comedy also features legendary hardman Chuck Norris in his movie debut.

The Way of the Dragon follows Bruce Lee’s character Tang Lung, who travels from Hong Kong to Rome to help a family protect their Chinese restaurant from an onslaught of Mafia gangsters.

It’s always hard to choose the best Bruce Lee film, and others will likely have their own opinions, but for us, this is the best Bruce Lee movie on SBS On Demand.

You Were Never Really Here

You Were Never Really Here

Director: Lynne Ramsay Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Ekaterina Samsonov Genre: Drama, Thriller Released:  2017

Joaquin Phoenix’s venerable status within cinema as an actor who will always take on the troubled and enigmatic lead is only proven further in Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here.

Seen in  Joker,   Gladiator  and Ridley Scott’s upcoming epic Napoleon ,  Phoenix portrays a traumatised and reclusive war veteran who, in retirement, uses his skills to locate and bring home missing girls for rich and powerful clients. When he’s brought in to track down a U.S. Senator’s missing daughter from a sex trafficking ring, he finds himself once again fighting for his life in the criminal underworld, with violent and fatal consequences.

Under the Skin

Under the Skin

Director: Jonathan Glazer Starring: Scarlett Johansson Genre:  Sci-Fi, Drama, Horror Released: 2013

Considered by many to be one of the best films made in this millennium, Scarlett Johansson’s  Under the Skin  is a critical exploration into the idea of personhood and self, told through the lens of an enigmatic, but human-like alien seductress, who is preying on unsuspecting men on Earth.

In all honesty, Under the Skin  tanked at the box office during its initial release, but it has since evolved and become one of the more poignant presentations of empathy and humanity as Johansson’s character comes to discover who she is throughout the film.

It’s freaky, gory and erotic; what more do you want?

Infernal Affairs

Infernal Affairs

Director: Andrew Lau, Alan Mak Starring: Andy Lau, Tony Leung Genre: Crime, Thriller Released: 2002

Infernal Affairs stars Andy Lau as a police officer who is working for the triad. Tony Leung co-stars as a cop who, after 10 years of undercover work in the triad, wants out. After a cocaine deal goes bust, both sides know that they have a mole within their ranks.

A thrilling crime drama that is high on style and backed with depth and intelligence, Infernal Affairs takes a close look at the blurry line between cop and criminal, and the duality of man. Martin Scorsese would go on to remake the film into The Departed and win an Oscar in the process.

Home » The 10 Best Movies on SBS On Demand to Watch Right Now

What movies can you watch on SBS On Demand tonight? We’ve put together a list of the best movies from around the world streaming on SBS On Demand right now

THREE COLORS: BLUE

Why you should watch : We’re going to begin this list with the two trilogies. To start we have the first film in Krzysztof Kieślowski’s masterpiece Three Colours. Although I have watched them separately, this is my initial viewing of the three in sequence. There are so many nuances there that I missed seeing them singularly. Blue sees Juliet Binoche star as Julie who loses her husband, an acclaimed composer and her young daughter in a car accident. The film embodies Julie’s attempt to start life anew, free of personal commitments, belongings, grief or love. She intends to numb herself by withdrawing from the world and living completely independently, anonymously and in solitude in Paris. Despite her intentions, people from her former and present life intrude with their own needs. This is beautifully acted and filmed, although it is a little dark at times. The grief of Julie is palpable and heart-wrenching.

Director:  KRZYSZTOF KIESLOWSKI Cast:  CATHERINE DENEUVE, JULIETTE BINOCHE, ETHAN HAWKE, CLEMENTINE GRENIER, MANON CLAVEL, LUC GARBOIS

THREE COLOURS: WHITE

Why you should watch : In the second film in Kieslowski’s trilogy, Polish immigrant Karol Karol finds himself out of a marriage, a job and a country when his French wife, Dominique, divorces him after six months due to his impotence. Forced to leave France after losing the business they jointly owned, Karol enlists fellow Polish expat Mikolah to smuggle him back to their homeland. Karol manages to get his life back on track with a bit of ingenuity and devises a clever scenario to win over Dominique.

Director:  KRZYSZTOF KIESLOWSKI Cast:  ZBIGNIEW ZAMACHOWSKI, JULIE DELPHY, JANUSZ GAJOS, JERZY STUHR, ALEKSANDER BARDINI, JERZY TRELA

THREE COLORS: RED

Why you should watch : In the final film in Kieslowski’s trilogy, the story tells of Valentine, a young model living in Geneva. Because of a dog she ran over, she meets a retired judge who spies on his neighbours’ phone calls, not for money but to feed his cynicism. The film is the story of relationships, that of Valentine and the judge, but also other people who may not be aware of the relationship they have with Valentine or/and the old judge. Redemption, forgiveness and compassion abound. In the final scenes of the film, the trilogy becomes one. On completion of the “Three Colors” Trilogy, Kieslowski vowed that he would never work again in movies. Sadly, the famed director would die in 1996, still in his mid-50s.

Director:  KRZYSZTOF KIESLOWSKI Cast: IRENE JACOB, JEAN-LOUIS TRINTIGNANT, FRRDERIQUE FEDER, JEAN-PIERRE LORIT, SAMUEL LE BIHAN, MARION STALENS

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO

Why you should watch : Here we begin Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy adapted from his crime novels, which were originally produced for television. The Swedish version is far superior to the English version. Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace are perfect in the lead roles, with an excellent ensemble cast attached. Be warned that in all three films the violence is extreme in some cases. Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle suspects murder and that the killer is a member of his own dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, ruthless computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet’s disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. Riveting, exceptional viewing.

Director:  NIELS ARDEN OPLEV Cast:  MICHAEL NYQVIST, NOOMI RAPACE, LENA ENDRE, EWA FROLING, SVEN-BERTIL TAUBE, PETER HABER, PETER ANDERSSON

THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE

Why you should watch : This is the second film in the best-selling Millennium series by Stieg Larsson, which was published posthumously in 2006. Mikael Blomkvist, publisher of Millennium magazine, has made his living exposing the crooked and corrupt practices of establishment Swedish figures. When a young journalist approaches him with a meticulously researched thesis about sex trafficking in Sweden and those in high office who abuse underage girls, Blomkvist immediately throws himself into the investigation, again with the assistance of Lisbeth, who has reasons of her own to ensure that justice prevails. I must say that the most powerful performance in all three of these films is Noomi Rapace. She is absolutely stunning.

Director:  DANIEL ALFREDSON Cast:  NOOMI RAPACE, MICHAEL NYQVIST, LENA ENDRE, PETER ANDERSSON, ANNIKA HALLIN, YASMIN GARBI, MICKE SPREITZ

THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET’S NEST

Why you should watch : The third film in the Millennium series by Stieg Larsson is both political thriller and legal drama, also published posthumously. Lisbeth Salander is under close supervision in a hospital and is set to face trial for attempted murder on her eventual release. With help from journalist Mikael Blomkvist and his researchers at Millennium magazine, she must prove her innocence. In doing this she plays against powerful enemies and her own past. When Noomi Rapace enters the courtroom, she looked spectacular. This one, in my opinion, is the most dramatic of the three, and the most thrilling. Stig Larsen died in 2004 of a heart attack, aged 50. Nyqvist died of lung cancer in 2017. He was 56.

Director: DANIEL ALFREDSON Cast:  NOOMI RAPACE, MICHAEL NYQVIST, LENA ENDRE, ANNIKA HALIN, JACOB ERICKSSON, MICKE SPREITZ, ANDERS AHLBOM ROSENDAHL

BODY DOUBLE

Why you should watch : SBS OnDemand have an excellent collection of Retro movies in their library. When this Brian de Palma film was released, it was considered ground-breaking in its themes and filming. It’s a thriller which has various nods to Hitchcock. I did laugh out loud at a couple of scenes as times have definitely changed since 1984. Jake comes home to find his girlfriend with another man and has to find a new place. Sam Bouchard, a fellow actor, needs a house sitter – the house is amazing. Sam shows him his favourite neighbour, a woman who strips with her window open each night. Jake becomes obsessed with meeting her. When he witnesses a murder, his life becomes very complicated as he becomes a suspect. The bizarre home-on-a-stalk that Jake temporarily occupies is architect John Lautner’s Chemosphere House in the Hollywood Hills.

Director:  BRIAN DE PALMA Cast:  CRAIG WASSON, DEBORAH SHELTON, GREGG HENRY, MELANIE GRIFFITH, DENNIS FRANZ, LANE DAVIES, JERRY BRUTSCHE

THIS IS SPINAL TAP

Why you should watch : Rob Reiner’s wonderful film, written by the exceedingly talented Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer,  would have to have some of the most quoted dialogue of all time. My personal favourite, “Have a good time, all the time.” There’s Nigel’s “we’ve got armadillos in our trousers” and “It’s like, how much more black could this be? And the answer is none. None more black”. And, of course, the amplifier that goes to 11. I’m sure you’re familiar with the story, but if not – in 1982, the legendary English heavy metal band Spinal Tap attempt an American comeback tour accompanied by a fan who is also a film-maker. Is it the greatest comedy ever? Yes, I think so. I’ve seen it many times, and I still find bits I missed, or possibly have forgotten. Age does that to you. I had a friend tell me that his mum thought it was a real documentary.

Director:  ROB REINER Cast:  CHRISTOPHER GUEST, MICHAEL MCKEAN, ROB REINER, HARRY SHEARER, R.J. PARNELL, TONY HENDRA, JUNE CHADWICK

I’M NOT THERE

Why you should watch : This is a brilliant biography drama from Todd Haynes. It is a totally different concept detailing the layers of a musician’s life. Six incarnations of Bob Dylan: an actor, a folk singer, an electrified troubadour, Rimbaud, Billy the Kid, and Woody Guthrie. Put Dylan’s music behind their adventures, soliloquies, interviews, marriage, and infidelity. Recreate 1960s documentaries in black and white. Put each at a crossroads, the artist becoming someone else. Jack, the son of Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, finds Jesus; handsome Robbie falls in love then abandons Claire. Woody, a lad escaped from foster care, hobos the US singing; Billy awakes in a valley threatened by a six-lane highway; Rimbaud talks. Jude, booed at Newport when he goes electric. The cast is exceptional. A joy to watch. Cate Blanchett is a standout for me.

Director:  TODD HAYNES Cast:  CHRISTIAN BALE, CATE BLANCHETT, HEATH LEDGER, BEN WHISHAW, RICHARD GERE, MARCUS CARL FRANKLIN

THE QUIET GIRL

Why you should watch : To quieten things down a bit, this is a beautiful, poignant film from Ireland, adapted from Claire Keegan’s book Foster. Set in 1981, it tells the story of a young girl, Cáit, who is sent away for the summer from her dysfunctional family to live with mother’s family. These are Seán and Eibhlín Cinnsealach; a middle-aged couple she has never met. Slowly, in the care of this couple, Cáit blossoms and discovers a new way of living, but in this house where affection grows and there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one. It is a story of childhood and healing. It is the first film in the Irish language to be nominated for an Oscar, and deservedly so.

Director:  COLM BAIREAD Cast:  CATHERINE CLINCH, CARRIE CROWLEY, ANDREW BENNETT, MICHAEL PATRIC, KATE NIC CHONAONAIGH, JOAN SHEEHY

Eclectic selection! Thanks, enjoying so far 🙂

This is a comment about the TV Guide itself. It is an excellent Guide but, although you can see what’s on TV days, even weeks in advance, you cannot go back to the day (date) before. This would be very useful to be able to do in order to see what programs you have missed so you could stream them. We recently missed out on watching a program that we knew we wanted to watch, but couldn’t remember what it was called. There was no way I could look this up after a few hours. So perhaps you could adjust the Guide to enable this. (It would be good to be able to go back further too.)

Totally agree with previous comment, sometimes I’m telling someone about a program I watched the day before, then can’t remember which station, and so it would be handy to go back over the same week.

Also keep an eye out for the Bolivian/US feature Tu Me Manques. Without doubt one of the last decade’s greatest and most engaging films, and it pops up on SBS World Movies from time to time.

There’s some great series on SBS also and I’d like TV Guide reviews of some of those, please

SBS On Demand review

SBS On Demand is a not-at-all demanding place to find some quality on-demand TV and movie viewing options.

SBS On Demand LOGO

You can’t watch it all, so we watch it for you.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Is SBS On Demand free?

Demand is only able to offer free streaming because whatever you watch is ad-supported. And the bad news is those ad breaks can be looong. How long? Try four back-to-back ads that collectively last two minutes, and that’s after an opening advert.

While it’s easy to appreciate the quality of the content available on SBS On Demand, watching a 22-minute episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine with two doses of two-minute ad breaks really does take the wind out of the comedic momentum of an episode, more so because it starts with 30 seconds of ads, too. Those 4.5 minutes of ads amount to around 20% of an episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine . I strongly suggest using them for bathroom or snack breaks. Things fare better for hour-long shows, which only have one additional two-minute ad break.

Movies have the best spread of ads after the initial 30-second opener, with four ad breaks spread every 20-or-so minutes throughout the running time. But if you’re primarily watching shorter shows, expect to regularly notice the ad breaks.

Movies on SBS On Demand

You don’t have to scroll for too long to find plenty of quality movies to watch on SBS On Demand. You can manually search for something you know is on the service or, alternatively, use the categories at the top of the page to search by genre. The other option is an appreciated Netflix-like approach wherein movies are separated into meaningful categories as you scroll.

Up the top you’ll find recently added flicks before the scroll descends into general categories like documentaries or quirkier categorisations like ‘The Oscar Goes To’ for Oscar-winning movies. Scrolling through the full JustWatch range of SBS On Demand movies , there are loads of impressive popular titles at the top of the list of the 650+ options that were available at the time of review.

For instance, get your zombie fix with Train to Busan , watch one of the greatest time travel movies ever made in Predestination , or dive into one of Luc Besson’s best in Léon: The Professional . For those brave enough to match lockdown mood to their movie picks, there’s engrossing (albeit draining) drama to be found in Spotlight , Shame , Incendies , The Railway Man and We Need to Talk About Kevin . If you fancy a laugh, there’s plenty of options, including Bend it Like Beckham , The Death of Stalin and the swear-tastic In The Loop .

You don’t have to try something new to find a great pick, either. Revisit classics like the bloodthirsty Apocalypto , the criminally underrated Dredd or iconic martial arts flick Ip Man . The more you scroll, the more classics you spot, even outside of the current popular picks: True Grit , Flawless and Police Story 2 , to name a few.

As you can see from the list above, that’s a mix of quality movies from home and around the world. While none of them are particularly big-budget Hollywood films, there’s enough quality in there to keep you constantly tapping that heart option and filling up your personalised favourites list.

SBS On Demand TV series

TV shows on SBS On Demand

Even for someone who watches way too much TV, scrolling through the popular JustWatch picks of SBS On Demand content starts strong but soon descends into unfamiliar territory. Still, there are some exceptional options to keep you entertained from 300+ options.

Have a laugh with Why Women Kill , new episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine , The Orville or the loony Letterkenny . Alternatively, there’s quality drama to be found in The Handmaid’s Tale , Halt and Catch Fire , or Mr. Mercedes . If you want something in between, Donald Glover’s Atlanta deserves all of its buzz. SBS On Demand is also the place to go for iconic Nordic noir series like the ones that start with “The”— The Killing , The Bridge and The Machinery — as well as others that don’t start with “The” but do conveniently start with “B”, including Below the Surface , Beforeigners and Blinded .

This is also where you can find a whole lot of drool-worthy SBS Food content, which is definitely tough to look at when you’re trying to be healthy.

SBS On Demand cycling and other sports

Sbs on demand app.

For starters, SBS On Demand is available on an expected range of devices:

  • Google Chrome (75 and above)
  • Firefox (67 and above)
  • Safari (10.1.2 and above)
  • Internet Explorer 11 (requires Flash 11+)
  • Microsoft Edge (17 and above)
  • iOS (13 and above)
  • Android (8.0 and above)
  • Android TV (7 and above)
  • Fire TV stick (Fire OS 5)
  • Apple TV (4th gen)
  • Hisense TVs (2017 models and later)
  • Samsung TVs (2012 models and later)
  • LG TVs (2013 models and later)
  • Panasonic TVs (2013 models and later)
  • Sony TVs (2013 models and later)
  • Freeview Plus-certified TVs

That’s a great selection of devices and means you should be able to stream SBS On Demand on pretty much whatever you like, even if you have older devices. Most of my review time was spent jumping between the Android app, Chrome browser and the Nvidia Shield TV Pro , the latter of which proved to be a godsend with the lower resolution.

Y’see, one of the biggest letdowns of SBS On Demand is that it maxes out at 720p streaming quality. While decent, 720p (HD) streams tend to suffer in the detail with more noticeable visual noise and less clarity than 1080p (Full HD) streams. Where the Nvidia Shield TV Pro proves to be a lifesaver is with its AI-powered on-the-fly upscaling, which makes a 720p stream look a lot better than what it looks like on a 27-inch PC screen (like the recently reviewed MSI Optix MAG274QRF-QD gaming monitor ), even if it’s less noticeable on a smaller smartphone screen, like the Google Pixel 5 .

SBS On Demand quality and data usage

400x2240.23Mbps103.5MB
640x3600.82Mbps369MB
640x360 (better)1.62Mbps729MB
1280x7202.27Mbps1021MB

You will notice a difference if you cast from a compatible mobile device to a bigger screen, though. And you definitely don’t want to stream at lower resolutions (see the table above), unless you’re desperate to preserve mobile data. Outside of that, the Android app understandably has a leaner design, but it also strangely swaps out the “TV Shows” section for “Programs”. It’s not a big deal, but it is an odd choice to defy consistency.

Is SBS On Demand worth using?

SBS On Demand is absolutely worth using. Even if it could benefit from a resolution buff and fewer ads on shorter shows—or at least more spread out to not disrupt the flow—SBS On Demand has a killer selection of movies, some quality TV choices (including big zeitgeist picks) and some great sports options, too. There are no big download requirements for the apps nor the shows you’re streaming, so you really should have it installed alongside other streaming services.

SBS On Demand FAQ

Whether you’re looking for SBS world movies or any other content available on SBS, you can find the SBS TV guide here . Click on the tabs at the top to select a channel, then use the state and location dropdown menus to pick what’s showing based on where you’re located. For the SBS On Demand TV guide, use that same link above but make sure the state is set to NSW because that’s what’s used as the basis for the five live SBS channels on SBS On Demand.

If you’re having issues with SBS On Demand, you can always try logging out then logging back in or uninstalling then reinstalling the app. Alternatively, SBS has a page dedicated to troubleshooting specific issues .
