How long does it take?

A PhD program takes at least 2 years and at most 4 years to complete full time. All ANU scholarships end after 3.5 years without any substitute at the RSC.

What scholarships are available?

ANU offers a variety of scholarships to eligible students studying a research degree program. Scholarships are provided to assist students with the cost of their studies.

Domestic students are enrolled into research programs under the  Australian Government Research Training Program (AGRTP) Fee Offset Scholarship . Under the AGRTP, the Australian Government pays 100% of domestic research students' tuition fees.

Scholarships differ in value and may be offered to cover some or all of the costs associated with tuition, accommodation, materials, relocation, cost of living and other expenses.

The Conditions of Award for each scholarship stipulates what the scholarship may be used for.

Two of the most sought after scholarships available are the  Australian Government Research Training Program (AGRTP) Stipend Scholarship  for domestic research students, and the  Australian Government Research Training Program (AGRTP) International Fee Offset Scholarship  for international research students.

Different scholarships are available depending on whether you are a domestic or international student.

Scholarships available to domestic research students

  • AGRTP Stipend Scholarship , applications close 31 October each year
  • ANU University Research Scholarship , applications close 31 October each year
  • ANU PhD Scholarships , applications can be made throughout the year

The Mathematical Sciences Institute also offers supplementary scholarships to attract talented Australian and New Zealand students of high calibre to pursue postgraduate research within the MSI. The scholarship provides for payment of a supplementary stipend to an outstanding holder of an AGRTP or similar stipend scholarship for the duration of that scholarship. The value of this scholarship is $5,000 per annum.

The maximum duration of this scholarship is three years full-time, with a possible six month extension.

Eligibility: Candidates who have completed a four year undergraduate degree or equivalent at H1 level and who wish to undertake a PhD at the School, are eligible. Domestic students include Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, and New Zealand citizens.

It is not necessary to complete a separate application form as all eligible candidates will be considered.

Scholarships available to international research students

  • AGRTP International Fee Offset Scholarship  - covers tuition fees for 3 years and provides Overseas Student Health Cover
  • ANU Tuition Scholarships
  • ANU PhD scholarships

International applicants are also encouraged to explore the  Endeavour Awards  offered by the Australian Government. Closing date for applications is usually 30 June each year.

How do I apply?

You need to apply online – one application covers both admission and scholarships. You will be automatically considered for all scholarships available to you. For more information please see the Apply tab.

Do I have to pay tuition fees?

Yes, unless you are a citizen or permanent resident of Australia or a citizen of New Zealand. International students can be considered for a HDR Fee Remission Merit Scholarship – where Tuition fees will be waived. This will be considered automatically and does not require additional paperwork.

How do I apply for a visa?

Prospective international students need to provide: (i) CV, (ii) academic transcript (colour scans), (iii) TOEFL or IELTS scores, (iv) 3 references of academics, (v) research proposal / project description by ANU supervisor. Once your application has been accepted you will receive a letter of offer for admission – once all conditions have been met (e.g. proof of health cover) and you have signed the paperwork, the ANU will provide an electronic certificate of enrolment (eCOE). You need the eCOE to apply to the Department of Immigration for a student visa.

Do I need Health Cover and how much does it cost?

Yes, International Students need to pay Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) in advance for 52 months as part of the visa requirements. You can either arrange your own OSHC, or ask the ANU to arrange it for you. Details will be outlined in your letter of offer for admission. The cost of OSHC for 2017 from the ANU preferred provider (Allianz) is $3,240 for single cover.

Where will I live?

The cost of living in any city obviously depends on needs, lifestyle choices and spending habits. For accommodation on-campus please refer to the following website:  http://www.anu.edu.au/study/accommodation .

HDR Scholarships post thesis submission

From 15 May 2024 with the publication of the new HDR Scholarships procedure , the process for HDR stipends post-thesis submission have changed to allow for some HDR Scholarship holders to continue to receive HDR stipend payments post-thesis submission.  Note this is only applicable to candidates who have submitted their thesis early (prior to 3.5 years full-time equivalent for PhD candidates, 1.5 years for MPhil candidates).  Amendments to the HDR Scholarships procedure are in the process of being approved which will contain additional details to clarify the changes. Conditions of Award for HDR scholarships are in the process of being reviewed and updated for this change. The following outlines how the changes will be applied, including the types are scholarships that are included, what approvals are required (if any), and general FAQ's.

What has changed?

  • 3.5 years FTE years for an PhD program, or
  • 1.5 years FTE for an MPhil program
TABLE 1: Application of the change to allow an HDR stipend to continue post-thesis submission

NoNAAny stipend scholarship that is a supplementary scholarship or 2nd or 3rd stipend scholarship. Where a candidate holds multiple scholarships the primary scholarship will be the one of greatest value.
NoNAScholarships which cover tuition fees

How long will the stipend payments continue post-thesis submission after approval?

The earliest of the following two dates:

  • Up to 3.5 FTE years for a PhD program or up to 1.5 FTE years for an MPhil program; or
  • To the program completion date (the date when all program requirements have been met including minor corrections or amendments to the satisfaction of the DA).

How will I know if I have been approved?

  • If you are a central scholarship holder you are already approved to continue to receive stipend payments post thesis submission so long as you have submitted your thesis prior to the following dates: 3.5 FTE years for a PhD program or up to 1.5 FTE years for an MPhil program. You will also receive an email from GRO upon thesis submission confirming this and advising you if your scholarship end date has been updated.
  • If you hold another stipend scholarship that is potentially in scope you will receive an email from GRO if the Financial Delegate has approved the continuation of stipend.

When can I expect to be paid my stipend post-thesis submission and approval?

  • If you are a central scholarship holder the payments should not cease after you have submitted. If your payments cease due to unexpected issues, when your payments resume the first payment will include a back payment to cover any missing pay period.
  • If you hold another scholarship that is potentially in scope for approval your stipend payments will cease upon thesis submission to ensure you are not overpaid. The payments will be reactivated if the Financial Delegate of the scholarship approves the continuation of your stipend post-thesis submission. After approval, you will be paid in the next available pay cycle. The first payment will include any backpayment to cover the missing pay periods.

What happens to scholarships that have been extended?

If your scholarship has been extended for any reason over 3.5 years or was initially greater than 3.5 FTE years for a PhD program (1.5 FTE years for a MPhil program)  you will not be eligible for any payments past 3.5 FTE years for a PhD (or 1.5 years FTE for a MPhil).

Why is my scholarship not in scope for potential approval?

  • The financial delegate or agreement governing the scholarship has not approved the stipend to continue post-thesis submission;  or
  • The scholarship is a secondary (supplementary or top-up) scholarship; or
  • The scholarship is a tuition fee scholarship or sponsorship that is no longer needed due to the enrolment ceasing upon thesis submission.

Why might a Financial Delegate not approve the continuation of the stipend post-thesis submission?

  • Lack of funds
  • It goes against a contract, terms, or agreement already in place
  • For consistency across multiple higher education providers (in the case of externally funded scholarships)
  • For any other reason

Can I appeal a decision not to approve the continuation of scholarship?

This is not an appealable or reviewable decision, however, you can lodge a grievance under the Procedure: Student grievance and complaint resolution .

Who is managing this process?

‍The Australian National University (ANU) is the world’s top 30 univeristy, among the top two per cent of universities in the world!. The College of Engineering, Computing and Cybernetics (CECC) is a vibrant and diverse community of more than three thousand students, staff, and visitors. Our College is comprised of three schools: the School of Engineering, the School of Computing, and the School of Cybernetics, supported by the Professional Services Group. We aim to bring together expertise in social, technical, ecological and scientific systems to build a new approach. In the College, we draw on our disciplinary foundations to find and solve problems of global importance. Our people build on our traditional world-class expertise and take it in creative, unconventional directions. Through the Reimagine investment, we have the privilege and the responsibility to build a new legacy for the University, the country, and even the world. We will deliver on our mission by building a strong community, providing transformative educational experiences, conducting high-impact research, seeking meaningful engagement, and becoming a resilient organisation post COVID-19. We connect divergent thinkers, to explore and pose solutions, that cross the traditional interdisciplinary and global boundaries. We have evolved from our foundational strength in systems thinking, reaching beyond traditional engineering fields. This systems approach embraces our core strengths and is shaped around four focus areas: Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Mechatronics. Join us in our fundamental quest of discovery and passionate pursuit of knowledge that goes beyond our lived world.
