This research examines English language and literature essays written by First Year students of the English Department at Dhaka University (Bangladesh) using multi-method genre analysis. The first method used was text analysis. Essay topics were analysed from the two contexts to identify their topic fields and main rhetorical functions. This helped develop the two models to analyse the structure of essays: an Exposition-Discussion model and a Description-Recount model. Then, a total of 100 essays from the two contexts were analysed on the basis of Move-strategy structure to see what structural patterns the essays possessed, what tactical choices the students took to express the moves and what was presented in terms of content matter within those moves. The second method was a questionnaire that was distributed to students in the department to discover their perceptions of the writing tasks given. And the third method was interviews conducted with teachers and students of the departm...

Although smart writing skill is equally important in both academic and professional spheres, many Bangladeshi tertiary level learners find writing skills too difficult to be developed. In respect of this, the students are given many writing tasks (such as composing a five-paragraph essay) to improve their competencies in a language classroom. Anyhow, writing a good essay needs several cognitive steps that a student has to go through demanding a high level of motivation and constructive teacher feedback. Considering the fact, this paper has investigated tertiary level Bangladeshi learners’ perspectives about how the essay-writing tasks keep them motivated in class. This pilot project had been conducted using a set of 20 items (quantitative survey questionnaire), which was administered among thirty participants from the Department of English of a reputed Bangladeshi public university. The small-scale research revealed that the majority of the undergraduates stay motivated during the b...

Teachers’ experiences prove that second language writing (L2 writing) is a challenging task. Embracing a phenomenological approach to research, this study unpacks teachers’ lived experiences of teaching English as a second language (ESL) writing at the undergraduate (bachelor) level in Nepal. Specifically, it explores how teachers teach writing, what kind of assignments they assign to their students, what they feel comfortable and uncomfortable with teaching writing, what they want to improve in their teaching, and what their students struggle with in carrying out their assignments. For collecting data, I used a written open-ended questionnaire as a research tool and I analyzed the resulting data thematically. The study reveals that, out of nine teachers, only four strove to embrace a process approach to writing. The findings show that, as reported by the teachers, students most often react negatively to writing assignments and struggle in their writing. The teachers assign several ...

The findings revealed that both the groups of participants (students and teachers) perceived all seven sub-skills of writing as ‘important’. There is consistency between students’ perceptions of importance of subskills of writing and teachers’ perception of importance of the sub-skills. Regarding the perceived competence, teacher participants found their students’ abilities to be “not very good”...

Democracy Day – Prajatantra Diwas
In the history of Nepal, the Nepalese people made long struggles and lots of sacrifices against the cruel Rana regime which ruled for one hundred and four years. Due to the establishment of democracy in Nepal on Falgun 7th, in 2007 B.S. every year, Democracy Day/ Prajatantra Diwas is celebrated as a national festival.
The Ranas, who exploited the royal power and the national treasury in enjoyment and having fun, whereas the Nepalese people, in general, were subjected to extreme oppression and exploitation by living in the throes of illiteracy, scarcity, and fear. Therefore, the Nepalese people had to make long struggles and sacrifices against the oppressive Rana regime’s totalitarian rule.
In the beginning, Rashtriya Praja Parishad and later the Nepali Congress Party was created in order to mobilize against the Rana regime’s rule. At that time, there was a surging wave of independence in India as well as in other neighboring countries. The then King Tribhuvan also supported the Nepalese people’s desire to be independent. The revolution was started by the Nepali Congress party. The King and his family abandoned his palace and the royalty reached the shelter at the Indian Embassy.
The Ranas tried to return the king, but they were unable to. The royal family reached New Delhi without the permission of the then Shree 3 Rana regime. Gyanendra, a minor Grandson of King Tribhuvan, who was left at his maternal home, was crowned King, but the Ranas failed to gain any kind of international support. Thus, the Rana Prime Minister was widely criticized in the international world.
The Nepalese people waged a struggle against the Rana government all over the country. From all places outside the valley, the rulers appointed by the Rana Prime Minister were being chased down. Many places, from the east to the west, were occupied by the Salvation Army (Mukti Sena) and in those places, a public government was formed. The public government urged the people not to pay the taxes levied by the Ranas. As the Ranas were being kicked in from everywhere, they were forced to kneel down before the people.
On the request of Rana Prime Minister Mohan Shamsher, a tripartite Delhi agreement was signed between the Ranas, Nepali Congress and then King Tribhuvan on 2007 B.S Falgun 1st, under the mediation of the then Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. King Tribhuvan returned to Nepal on Falgun 4th and declared democracy on Falgun 7th. Thus, the rule of 104 years of the Rana regime ended and democracy was established in Nepal. After the declaration of democracy, a new cabinet was announced with the participation of both the Ranas and the Nepali Congress party. And, the Interim Government of Nepal Act 2007 was also issued. This was the first practice of the rule of law in the history of Nepal.
The revolution of the year 2007 B.S is called the democratic movement of Nepal. It was the people’s first historic revolution. With this revolution, the governing bodies were handed over to the Nepalese people’s by the Rana regime. But, in the history of Nepal, however, the lack of skilled leadership to protect democracy obtained from the sacrifices of the people has always been a door knocker. Taking advantage of this weakness, King Mahendra dismissed the people’s elected government in the year 2017 B.S and established a monarchy by the name of the “Panchayat system”. About 30 years later, the Panchayat system led by the king collapsed and democracy was restored.
Nevertheless, the Nepalese people could not get skilled people’s representatives’ who can understand the sacrifice of the people and establish People’s democracy governed by the people, for the people, by the people, or govern the state. The politics of the country as a whole could not rise above the transient implications of the people and the party. King Gyanendra received the same opportunity created because of the lack of good leadership. But, his autocracy did not last long. As a result, the country achieved a Monarchic Democratic System, a sophisticated form of democracy without the monarch.
In this way, the Nepalese people had to struggle and sacrifice for a long period of time to establish a system of governing by their own elected representatives. Therefore, a tradition of paying homage has been established in the memory of national martyrs and national heroes who sacrificed their lives for the sake of democracy/ prajatantra. But despite the rule of law established in the system, the country has not been saved from scarcity, illiteracy, and unemployment.
Nepali society has not been able to prosper due to the lack of timely development infrastructure in the country. Although the law has changed, the general mindset has not changed yet. The country has not been able to take the path of development and prosperity. The political parties have been indulging in personal interests, not in the interest of the country.
Therefore, the significance of celebrating democracy day/ prajatantra diwas is to make the country prosperous by fulfilling the dream of heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the sake of democracy and republic. The country is ending through natural exploitation which has to be revitalized and fertilized again. It is up to the individual and the party to accept the national interest rising above personal or political interest. The plan has to be made to bring the country to the height of a sustainable, free-from-need, developed nation by planning for centuries and millennia.
Nepal has now entered into a new era, crossing the struggle from democracy to a republic. While the republic is being institutionalized as a sophisticated political system, there is a lack of dignified political culture among the parties. Even after the total collapse of the monarchy, the political parties have not been able to rise above the old system. They have neither the consensus nor the feeling of coexistence. Therefore, it is today’s need for democracy/ prajatantra that the ruling party should abandon the pomp of power and the opposing parties should not have a defeat in their mindset but should be focused on instituting the development and prosperity achieved so far. 1. Nepalese languages
O nce in Nepal , communities remained completely isolated by steep valleys, high mountains and by thick forest, leading to the evolution of many distinct languages, given as 92 in the 2001 census but now put by ethnologue at 124 distinct living languages . This increase in number seems mostly related to distinguishing dialects within larger groups previously thought to belong to a single linguistic community. Ethnologue’s linguistic map for Nepal , reproduced in Figure 1 , shows the hot spot of languages scattered across the country.
Fig 1. The Linguistic Map of Nepal.
If we take Trosterud’s suggestion that at least those languages with more than 16,000 speakers should be written, we find that we should expect all languages down to and including Dhimal should be written; this is 28 languages, just under one third of the languages, in line with the proportion in the population of world languages as a whole. Table 3, lists these 28 languages plus two others, with relevant characteristics extracted from Ethnologue. Note that 8 of them have much larger populations across the border in India, with one of these, Maithili, the second largest language of Nepal. This leaves 20 Nepalese languages, only one of which, Nepali , is used in written form in all walks of life and can be considered fully literate; however most of them have at least some limited use in writing.
2. Nepalese writing
However only four of these purely Nepalese languages have any significant tradition of being written:
Ethnologue only reports limited literacy for Newari and Limbu, not surprising since these languages were suppressed by successive Nepalese governments from the late 18th century onwards until 1990. While the writing of Limbu and Lepcha was probably only ever used for special cultural and religious texts, Newar writing was used for a wide range of purposes until the overthrow of their regime by the Gorkhas in the mid 18th century.
Note that cross border languages, and particularly Maithili and Bhojpuri, also have their own mature literature and may be written in their own distinctive script; for Maithili the script is known as Mithilakshar or Tirhuta, for Bhojpuri it is Kaithi.
Indic writing including Devanagari and Bengali has been printed in movable type since around 1800, with the type evolving and being simplified over the centuries. When computers became used for writing and publishing, the encoding of Devanagari and other Indic scripts was undertaken in India, leading to the Indian Script Code for Information Interchange – ISCII. Work had been proposed to include Devanagari within the then established standard for computers, ISO 8859, as part 12, but this work was abandoned expecting to adopt ISCII’s codes into ISO 8859. However ISO 8859 was in turn superseded by Unicode, which included a code block for Devanagari and other major Indic scripts from the start, with the code blocks adapted from a 1988 version of ISCII. One significant difference between ISCII and Unicode was that in ISCII all the scripts of India had been unified within a single table, with the different scripts selected by appropriate font, whereas in Unicode these were dis-unified into separate code blocks.
The encoding of Limbu was added to the Unicode Standard in April 2003 with the release of version 4.0. Limbu was introduced to the standardisation process by McGowan and Everson in 1999, and a proposal was written jointly by Boyd Michaelovsky and Michael Everson in 2002. Michaelovsky is a linguist who has done considerable field research among the Limbu in Nepal learning about their writing in context, appealing in the proposal to both examples of writing and to the phonology of the spoken language. Even so there have been some discussions since then about missing characters, and in 2011 Pandey proposed two additional composite characters, though there is a case for introducing the virama instead.

Essay on My Country Nepal For Students
If there is a country’s flag that stands out among all other countries it is the flag of Nepal . Our flag is very unique and cannot be compared to other countries’ flags due to its shape. It also has a hidden meaning behind it which represents the country’s peace-loving and friendly nature, bravery, and immortal history.
My country Nepal is situated between two countries, India and China. Although it is sandwiched between international powers, conflicts have not happened between any, and peace remains. Nepal is a country of various castes and cultures. In other words, it is like a beautiful garden of flowers with people of different ethnicities and backgrounds.
My country Nepal is not only unique for its flag but also its geographical terrain, the variety of castes and cultures you can find, and the rich history of it. It is the land of various great places and important figures that people know far and wide. The temperature here spans from cool to hot and is a heaven for residing in.
There are about 126 castes in Nepal each with its own rich history and culture which makes Nepal a rich place for culture. Some dating back to the millenniums. Not only that, our country is very rich in its geographical terrain. From the lowest point of just 70 Meters from sea level to the world’s highest peak Mt. Everest (8848.86 meters) , we have temperature scales that vary from place to place. It is divided into three regions, Terai, Hilly, and Himalayas each according to their altitude and geographical differences.
Himalayan regions have high and mighty Himalayas that are breathtaking to look at. Out of the world’s top 10 highest peaks, 8 of them fall in my country. It is already a great pride to have come from such a country. The diverse flora and fauna, beautiful landscapes, lush and green jungles, historical and religious places in Nepal are enough to gather the attention of foreigners and locals too. People from all over the world pay thousands of dollars just to see our country’s snow-capped mountains, rivers, cliffs, waterfalls, other beautiful landscapes, the rich flora and fauna, and sites of great religious and historical importance. It just doesn’t end there.
📌 Read – Essay on the Importance of English Language
Our country ranks in the top 5 for the richest in water resources. With just a small country with an area of 1,47,181 sq kilometers, it has the potential to fuel hydropower worth 2% of the entire world. It may look small in number but taking our country’s small area in context, it is a potential incomparable to all. The Terai region holds fertile land and smooth flowing waters that are excellent for farming and cultivating.
Nepal is also known as an agricultural country where 60% of the people here follow agriculture as their work. Our country also has huge historical importance. Gautama Buddha the founder and preacher of Buddhism which is practiced worldwide was also born in Nepal. Buddhism is known to preach peace and non-violence and to love everyone. King Janak is also an important figure who holds great importance to communities in Nepal.
Other personalities include Bhrikuti, Araniko, etc. Our country is also known for its bravery. Our country never has to celebrate Independence day as we were never under the rule of any other. We stood and fought against the Britans and other Mongol countries. Brave Gorkhalis were united after a long struggle and fought their way to preserve their country. The courage and bravery of Nepali people are also know world wide. Many brave Gorkhalis went to fight under countries in world wars and won various colors and medals. This brought our country so much respect that we even enjoy it for granted to date.
Although our country’s history, culture, terrains, and achievements make anyone feel proud, the power struggle for the politicians, previous kings, and presidents have made the country weak and fall in the developing country category. Our rich natural resources have not been utilized and we have fallen way behind. Corruption is widely prevalent in our country and the loans we have taken from other countries are in a large number. The amount of food and other materialistic consumption has made Nepal import more and export less.
Our country is poor but the people here are rich. This is because of the corruption and the illegal working/trading that has been done. The government has not made significant progress and the people aren’t responsible. Although I feel proud to be A Nepali, the condition of my country makes me feel bad. People should feel responsible and carry out their duties and not just complain about the government.
The government too should implement proper policies and rules and enforce them accordingly. Utilization of our natural resources should be done in an effective way and social evils such as discrimination according to castes and genders, other superstitions should be slowly removed. Centralized development should stop and we should control the people moving out to other countries with their skills that are wasted abroad. This way we can slowly develop our country.
