Shovel

The Ultimate Study System

Everything a college student needs to succeed.

Dear Student,

My goal is to get you better grades, with less stress, and more time for fun.

Because I know what it feels like to struggle.

I was lucky enough to get into Harvard, but my first year was rough.

I wanted to do it all, but I wasn’t good at managing my time and my workload. I was headed for trouble.

Luckily I met my mentor and turned it around, but I saw how my first year hurt my GPA and future job opportunities.

That’s why I want to help you succeed in college from day one .

The Shovel Study Planner

I created a unique time-blocking study planner called Shovel.

It’s built on proven time and task management principles taught by executive functioning coaches.

To quote Kayla, one of our users…

Kayla - Shovel Student from Tampa University

“Shovel is a LIFESAVER.”

Here is a 3-minute video of how Shovel works:

What Makes Shovel So Effective?

Shovel Study Planner App

1. Student-Centric Design: Unlike other planners, Shovel is tailored exclusively for students, addressing their specific academic needs with precision and care.

2. Habit Building: It reinforces strong study habits through well-established time management principles, helping students develop routines that lead to better grades.

3. Integrated Task Management: Shovel’s advanced features support detailed planning and tracking of study sessions, with seamless integration into leading educational platforms such as Canvas, Brightspace, and Moodle.

4. Adaptive Scheduling: The app is dynamic, updating in real-time to adapt to changes in course demands, making it an indispensable tool for academic planning.

5. Time-Blocking Methodology: Shovel employs a time-blocking strategy that is particularly beneficial for students seeking a structured study regimen, including those managing ADHD or bipolar disorder.

6. Predictive Analysis: Beyond organization, Shovel offers predictive analytics, allowing students to anticipate their academic journey and make proactive adjustments.

7. Action-Oriented: The app doesn’t just plan; it inspires action by merging past accomplishments with future objectives, promoting a well-rounded academic and social life.

8. Balanced Approach: Encouraging the ‘work hard, play hard’ ethos, Shovel helps students enjoy a rewarding college experience while achieving high academic performance.

9. Transformative System: More than an app, Shovel is a comprehensive study system created from a student’s perspective to revolutionize academic habits and outcomes.

Shovel’s 5-Step Approach To Easy A’s

1- uncover  your available study time.

Use our drag-and-drop builder to quickly build your schedule and uncover your available study time. When things change, adjust things on-the-go in our mobile app. Always know when you can study and for how long.

Have every task from every class in one place and always know how long each task will take – even readings! With our powerful, student-optimized task list, you’ll meet every deadline.

3- Time-Block Tasks Into Available Study Times

Drag and drop your tasks into your calendar to plan when you’ll get them done. Don’t let anything distract you. Always know WHAT you’ll be working on, WHEN, and for HOW LONG.

4- Know You Can Meet Every Deadline

5- visualize your past and your future.

The REAL Study Plan Secrets (Course)

The Real Study Plan Secrets Course

Shovel is more than just a study planner; it’s a foundation built on robust time and task management strategies.

Recognizing that equipping students with the tool alone isn’t enough, I created a course that will teach you how to stay in control of your time and tasks from start to finish.

It will show you the actual steps for staying organized and also explain why these steps work to give you better results. I call this course the “ The REAL Study Plan Secrets. “

The 80/20 College Success Materclass

The 80/20 College Success Masterclass

And last but not least, I also built an evidence-based course on how to study effectively, which empowers students to get the most out of their study time without wasting time and energy on study techniques that don’t work.

I call the course the “ 80/20 College Success Masterclass ” based on the Pareto principle that 20 percent of study habits deliver 80 percent of the results. But in our case, it’s more like 99 percent.

The Shovel Study System

Shovel Study System

Together, the Shovel Study Planner, The Real Study Plan Secrets Course, and The 80/20 College Success masterclass form a POWERFUL STUDY SYSTEM.

A consistent way of doing things the same way every day, to get predictable results.

Success Starts Here

College is different than high school, and students often show up to college unprepared.

This results in bad grades, poor mental health, dumbing down of majors, taking a year off costing families additional money, and worst of all, NOT getting the best job opportunities.

We have proven that this is preventable.

Charlotte - Shovel User

This is Charlotte, a fencer from BU who… “went from almost failing to straight A’s in upper-level neuroscience thanks to the Shovel Study System.”

College is expensive and not doing your best is a waste of money. So talk to your parents about helping you succeed.

Tell them about the Shovel Study System and get everything you need to succeed.

Who Is The Shovel Study System For?

Incoming College Students: Starting college with strong organizational habits is essential for college success.

Current College Students: Shovel enhances existing study methods and academic processes to help students get better grades with less stress.

High School Students: Early adoption of Shovel equates to better grades, getting into top-tier institutions, and a smoother transition to college.

Neurodivergent Students: Shovel has proven effective for students with ADD/ADHD, as evidenced by our glowing reviews.

5 Star Review For Shovel Study Planner

Miracle fo ADHD

I actually don’t know what I would do without this app! I have ADHD and planners have NEVER worked for me. I end up forgetting about them and they don’t help. The only thing I’ve EVER found that actually helps me not miss assignments and due dates is a combination of Shovel and Google Calendar. I’m currently a straight A student in college and have never missed a single assignment or been blindsided by an exam thanks to Shovel. Forever grateful for this app.

– Jake (Purdue)

Shovel Is The Brain I Wish I Had

The best school planner out there. I have horrible ADHD, and simply cannot filter, prioritize, and plan the way Shovel’s algorithm does. My brain crashes just looking at a todo list. Shovel is the brain I wish I had. It guides me through planning based on how much time I have vs how many hours each task will need to be completed by the due date. I just select study time slots and fill them with task time.

– Olivia (USC)

Time-blocking is how Bill Gates and Elon Musk plan their busy days.

Simply put, it means assigning individual tasks into a calendar for specific durations of time.

And Shovel makes time-blocking EASY!

The benefits of time-blocking, eliminates procrastination: students are amazing at postponing their tasks until it’s too late. but time-blocking holds them accountable for getting tasks done at a specific time., shows what’s possible: students who don’t plan their day often overestimate how much they can get done. time-blocking will help them match tasks with time on their calendar and show them what’s actually possible., helps students prioritize: students often struggle to decide what to work on when they sit down to study. time-blocking will eliminate this lack of focus and hesitancy as their plans will have already been set when they sit down to study., dig out of that pile of homework, invest in your success today.

How to Create an Effective Study Timetable | Planner & Schedule

How to Create an Effective Study Timetable | Planner & Schedule

How to Create an Effective Study Timetable | Planner & Schedule

Crafting a killer study timetable is a great tool to improve your productivity and focus. Many students, particularly those prone to distraction and procrastination, find study timetables a very effective way to stay focused and on track with their studies. Study planners are also a great way to manage all of your responsibilities for both your school and personal life, helping you manage your workload and get better grades.

Why is a Study Timetable Effective?

Before we get into the step-by-step of how to set up your study timetable for school, let’s go over why this can be so useful! A well-planned study timetable offers several benefits:

  • Time Management: A study timetable helps you allocate your time efficiently, ensuring that you allocate enough time to each subject or topic.
  • Consistency: Regular study sessions can help reinforce your learning, making it easier to retain information and perform well in assessments.
  • Reduced Anxiety and Less Stress: Setting up realistic study expectations can reduce the pressure you put on yourself as well as increase your confidence that you’ve prepared properly for your tests.

study timetable

How to Set up a Study Timetable for School:

Step 1: organize your schedule with the mystudylife student planner app.

Begin by efficiently managing your schedule using the MyStudyLife study app . This powerful tool will help you streamline your academic commitments and set the foundation for an effective study timetable.

Step 2: Understand Your Responsibilities vs Free Time

After pinpointing your objectives and top priorities, it’s time to evaluate the daily time you can allocate to your study sessions. Consider factors like your class timetable, work responsibilities, and any other unchanging commitments. It’s crucial to maintain a realistic perspective when scheduling study hours to prevent overwhelming yourself.

Step 3: Create a Weekly Overview

Now, it’s time to create a weekly overview of your study timetable. Start by dividing your week into days, taking into account weekends and any days off. Each day should have a clear structure that includes time blocks for studying, breaks, meals, and other activities.

study timetable planner

Step 4: Allocate Time for Each Subject

Next, allocate time slots for each of your subjects or topics. Try to determine how much time you will need for each subject. This will get easier to know over time- but you can usually figure this out based on your past grades and how difficult you find a subject to learn. Don’t fall into the trap of focusing on your easier subjects and ensure that you distribute your subjects evenly throughout the week to prevent burnout. Be sure to think about if it’s a small quiz or a final exam .

Step 5: Set Specific Study Goals

To make your study timetable even more effective, set specific study goals for each session. Instead of just saying, “I’ll study math for two hours,” specify what you intend to accomplish during those two hours. For example, “I’ll complete two math practice sets and review the last two chapters.”

Setting specific goals helps keep you focused and motivated during your study sessions.

school study timetable

Step 6: Include Breaks

Remember that breaks are essential for maintaining productivity and preventing burnout. Schedule short breaks between study sessions to relax, stretch, and recharge. A well-loved technique is the Pomodoro Technique, which involves 25-minute focused study sessions followed by a 5-minute break.

Step 7: Make time for Self-Care and Prevent Burnout

In addition to adhering to a well-organized study timetable, it is imperative to prioritize self-care. Refrain from pushing yourself to the limits of exhaustion. Instead, allocate time for breaks and relaxation to maintain your mental and physical well-being. Overdoing it can ultimately lead to you getting burnt out , which makes being productive next to impossible. Keep in mind that breaks are just as important as work time.

Step 8: Review and Revise

Your study timetable is not set in stone. Periodically review your timetable to assess your progress and make necessary adjustments. If you find that a particular subject needs more attention, reallocate your time accordingly. Regularly reviewing and revising your timetable ensures that it remains effective and aligned with your goals.

School Schedule Planner

You’re only a few clicks away from creating a daily, monthly, or weekly class schedule for school. free, available on your phone or computer, online or offline, and customizable..

Additional Tips for Success

  • Create a Study-Friendly Environment: Choose a quiet, well-lit, and comfortable space for your study sessions. Minimize distractions, such as your phone or social media, during your study time.
  • Use Technology to Your Advantage: There are various apps and tools available that can help you organize and stick to your study timetable. Some popular options include Google Calendar, Trello, and dedicated study apps like MyStudyLife’s daily school planner .
  • Seek Support: If you’re struggling with certain subjects or topics, don’t hesitate to seek help from teachers, tutors, or peers. Collaborative study sessions can also be beneficial.
  • Prioritize Your Wellness : Try to get as much sleep as you need and be sure to fuel your mind with brain-boosting foods . Exercise is another crucial part of this, so try to find a way to move your body in a way that is sustainable for you. This can be anything from a short walk to intense workouts!
  • Reward Yourself: Incorporate rewards into your timetable to motivate yourself. For example, treat yourself to a favorite snack or short leisure activity after completing a study session.

In conclusion, your study timetable is your strategic tool for academic achievement. It’s not just a schedule; it’s a plan for success. Maintain its structure, adapt when needed, and watch your progress unfold. Now, embark on your journey toward academic excellence with confidence and determination.

Brilliant and innovative

I just want to start off by saying that while I didn’t have the opportunity to use this app to its full extent, as it came out a month and a bit prior to lockdown, it’s an incredible app and makes revision and general timetable work easy. A suggestion that I would make is to make this app more universal. Currently it’s built for GCSE and A Level students, but if you could find a way to incorporate university students too it would make this app significantly better. Perhaps what you could do is make a “custom subject” option that allows you to make a subject that isn’t available from the list. You could allow the user to input exam dates and the specification for their custom subjects so that the app can still make them a working revision plan. If you do make this then this app would get a solid 5 star from me!

Really Helpful!

I don't usually write reviews but I have been testing out this app for about a week now, and as someone who is very unorganised (particularly with revision!), I find this app really helpful in sorting what I need to revise and it has allowed me to stick to a schedule. I also find it much more useful than creating a revision timetable on paper, as I can check off things I need to revise and have already revised. There are a lot of good features to this app, like adding a timetable, tasks, tests and more. I really like the fact that I can separate the exam boards for each subject, and can choose the modules in subjects where we only study certain ones rather than the full course. Overall, I'm very grateful for this app, I have been waiting for it ever since I began seeing advertisements teasing it, and so far I really see the benefits! I think for GCSE and A-Level students, this is a truly useful tool you should download.

Good but the topics should be suggested in a different order

The app works well and it is useful to see when you will finish the course. I also like that there is a lot of customisation options. However, I think an improvement would be changing the order in which topics are suggested (or adding more customisation options to do so) For example, I am doing A level Chemistry and the app suggests that I go through all the physical topics, then all of the inorganic topics and then finally organics. It would make more sense to do a mix, eg. one topic from physical followed by one from inorganic and then organic (as you would at school). I know that you can add your own tasks from the courses or create your own, I just think the app could be a little more intuitive as this would help save students’ time, as I still have to create my own plan because of this. Even if it was just a customisation option (for the app to suggest a mix of topics) that would be helpful.

  • 529 plans are education savings plans that family and friends can open for long-term growth and tax-advantages.
  • 529 plan tax benefits include tax-free growth and tax-free withdrawals on qualifying academic expenses.
  • The best state 529 plans have low minimum requirements, low fees, diverse investment options, and a tax deduction benefit.

A 529 savings account is an efficient way to save and invest toward your child's future education expenses that could also earn you a tax break on your state income tax return. Opening a 529 plan early can reduce future out-of-pocket expenses. But not all 529 plans are built the same.

It's important to note that not all 529 accounts are built the same. The good thing is that a majority of 529 plans are eligible for out-of-state residents, so you're not necessarily limited to the programs attached to your own state. However, you may lose some of the strongest benefits with an out-of-state plan.

Finding the Best 529 Plans for Your Needs

The best way to choose a 529 plan is to start with your state's own plan, as you're more likely to benefit from in-state exclusive tax deductions or credits from your 529 plan contributions. Remember, although many states offer tax deduction benefits, it is not always available to out-of-state participants.

Plus, some 529 plans don't offer tax deductions. For example, Pennsylvania's 529 plan offers one of the more lucrative tax advantages, up to a $36,000 annual tax deduction for both in-state and out-of-state participants. But Alaska's 529 doesn't offer any sort of tax deduction for any participant.

Other factors you'll want to take into consideration are the:

  • Minimum investment requirements: Many 529s are generally low-cost with no (or low) minimum deposit requirement to open. Still, evaluating the cost of joining a program and whether you're obligated to contribute a certain subsequent amount over time should factor into your decision.
  • Fees and costs: High fees can eat away at your investment gains. Fees associated with 529s are program management fees, account maintenance fees, and underlying investment fees.
  • Investment options: 529s generally offer a range of mutual funds and index funds from different brokerages and banks, so make sure you pick a program with funds that align with your preferences. Most 529s offer static, age-based, and enrollment-based portfolios. But there are also more unique portfolio options, such as ESG portfolios or interest-bearing, that aren't available with all 529 programs.
  • Type of plan:  When deciding which 529 plan is best for you, consider whether you'd like to participate in an education savings plan or a prepaid tuition plan. Most of the best 529 plans are normally education savings plans, but you may prefer to lock in tuition rates and opt-in for a pre-paid plan.

If your state's plan doesn't have what you're looking for, compare other eligible out-of-state plans with low fees, diverse investment options, and worthwhile tax benefits. Make sure to understand the specific 529 account rules before opening an account.

Some great resources to compare and research different 529 programs are Savingsforcollege.com and Morningstar . Comparing these different program's 529 tax benefits, rules, and limits.

Best 529 plans — Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

A 529 plan is a tax-advantaged, state-run education savings program for parents to save on behalf of a child. They're funded with after-tax dollars and grow tax-free until withdrawal. Qualifying withdrawals for 529 plans (such as K-12 tuition, school supplies, etc.) are also tax-free. Most states allow out-of-state residents to participate in their plans.

Utah's my529 is one of the top 529 plans for college savings, earning a Gold rating from Morningstar's Analyst Rating for 12 consecutive years. Utah my529 is a top-performing 529 savings account due to its various portfolio options such as enrollment and static investment options, plus the option of a customized portfolio.

The benefit of a 529 plan are long-term, tax-free growth and the power of compound interest. Similar to a Roth IRA, 529 savings plans are funded with after-tax dollars. You can also get tax-free withdrawals with qualifying education expenses like college tuition, student loan repayments, school supplies, and room and board.

Some disadvantages associated with investing in a 529 savings plan are the limited investment choices and potentially high fees. One of the most significant disadvantages is that contributing to a 529 account could also impact your eligibility for federal aid.

Which 529 plan is best for you may be your own state's plan as you are more likely to benefit from an in-state tax deduction. However, if your state's plan is not a good fit, you can consider another state to find what 529 plan is best for you based on fees, tax benefits, and investment options. You can learn more about 529 plans with comprehensive sites like savingforcollege.com.

Study Shows How Higher Education Supports Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Students Through Culturally Relevant Courses, Programs, and Research

Analysis of minority-serving institutions on the East and West Coasts demonstrates layered processes to build students’ capacities

The model minority myth paints a picture of Asian Americans as a monolithic group with unparalleled success in academics. A new NYU study unpacks this myth, exploring the needs of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander students and how higher education institutions support these populations.

In 2007, Congress established a federal designation for higher education institutions that enroll at least 10 percent of undergraduate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA&NHPI) students, and who enroll a significant proportion of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. This designation as an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI) was among one of the newest categories of minority-serving institutions that receive federal funding to advance educational equity and support for ethnic and racial minorities.

In a two-site case study, Mike Hoa Nguyen , assistant professor of education at NYU Steinhardt, collected data from interviews, internal and public university documents, and observations of activities, courses, and meetings to determine the process in which AANAPISI programs expand students’ capacities through culturally relevant coursework, mentorship, research, and civic engagement. His findings are published in The Review of Higher Education .

“AANAPISIs demonstrate a federal commitment to supporting the unique educational needs of AA&NHPI students, which are too often obscured by the model minority myth,” said Nguyen. “This myth dangerously asserts that Asian American students, and Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander students by association, are universally successful and unparalleled in their academic achievements. AANAPISIs play a major role in addressing this problem, and in doing so, provide critical resources to uplift the students they serve. This study documents the process in which these colleges and universities engage in this important work.”

Nguyen's study centered on a large, public community college on the West Coast and a large, urban, regional public university on the East Coast. Nguyen’s findings related to the experiences of students in these programs.

He uncovered a five-tiered process that the two institutions use to build opportunities for learning, practice, and engagement:

AA&NHPI Focused Coursework At both institutions, courses focused on these populations are offered through the institutions’ Asian American Studies programs, where students are exposed to concepts connected to their racial and ethnic identities. One student shared her experience with a course, Asian Women in the United States, “Through my experience with that class I learned…for the first time, issues that affected my community. Specifically, me as an Asian American woman, specifically Vietnamese American…”

Teaching and Mentoring Students who had previously taken AA&NHPI coursework provided tutoring and mentoring to support new students with classwork, programs, books, and scholarship applications.  According to one mentor, “Cambodian Americans fall through the cracks, we’re just not in higher ed…It’s not a supportive space for us…[the AANAPISI faculty] understand…from their own community work, from being on campus, and [from] teaching for so long that…when they find students who fit these demographics it makes sense for them to mentor them.”

Advanced AA&NHPI Focused Coursework After serving as mentors, students often take more advanced courses focused on theoretical, historical, and contemporary issues regarding the AA&NHPI experience to continue their academics while gaining tools to make larger contributions toward their communities.

Academic and Research Development Students who complete advanced coursework are provided opportunities to engage in academic projects and research with faculty and staff, presenting research at conferences or publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

Professional and Community Experience The final step in the process offers opportunities for students to engage in community-based projects, internships, and employment with partner organizations, government offices, or other schools. A student shared that his research experience led to the creation of a Vietnamese American organizing and training program. “[Researchers] found out that Vietnamese Americans in [the neighborhood] don't participate in civics or politics…they basically feel disenfranchised, like their vote doesn’t matter…So, the research showed that there needs to be an organization to help push and provide opportunities to talk about politics in a Vietnamese American progressive context…”

“AANAPISIs are the backbone for AA&NHPI students in higher education. These institutions account for six percent of all colleges and universities, yet enroll over 40 percent of all AA&NHPI undergraduates,” said Nguyen. “This study offers new understandings of the critical role that AANAPISIs play to expand educational opportunity and enrich learning experiences—which can be adopted beyond AANAPISIs and for other students—as well as inform the work of policymakers as they seek new solutions to refine and regulate the administration of minority-serving institutions.”

Funding for this study was provided by the UCLA Institute of American Cultures and the UCLA Asian American Studies Center.

Physical Fitness Linked to Better Mental Health in Young People

A new study bolsters existing research suggesting that exercise can protect against anxiety, depression and attention challenges.

By Matt Richtel

Physical fitness among children and adolescents may protect against developing depressive symptoms, anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, according to a study published on Monday in JAMA Pediatrics.

The study also found that better performance in cardiovascular activities, strength and muscular endurance were each associated with greater protection against such mental health conditions. The researchers deemed this linkage “dose-dependent,” suggesting that a child or adolescent who is more fit may be accordingly less likely to experience the onset of a mental health disorder.

These findings come amid a surge of mental health diagnoses among children and adolescents, in the United States and abroad, that have prompted efforts to understand and curb the problem.

Children run in a field outside a small schoolhouse.

The new study, conducted by researchers in Taiwan, compared data from two large data sets: the Taiwan National Student Fitness Tests, which measures student fitness performance in schools, and the National Insurance Research Databases, which records medical claims, diagnoses prescriptions and other medical information. The researchers did not have access to the students’ names but were able to use the anonymized data to compare the students’ physical fitness and mental health results.

The risk of mental health disorder was weighted against three metrics for physical fitness: cardio fitness, as measured by a student’s time in an 800-meter run; muscle endurance, indicated by the number of situps performed; and muscle power, measured by the standing broad jump.

Improved performance in each activity was linked with a lower risk of mental health disorder. For instance, a 30-second decrease in 800-meter time was associated, in girls, with a lower risk of anxiety, depression and A.D.H.D. In boys, it was associated with lower anxiety and risk of the disorder.

An increase of five situps per minute was associated with lower anxiety and risk of the disorder in boys, and with decreased risk of depression and anxiety in girls.

“These findings suggest the potential of cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness as protective factors in mitigating the onset of mental health disorders among children and adolescents,” the researchers wrote in the journal article.

Physical and mental health were already assumed to be linked , they added, but previous research had relied largely on questionnaires and self-reports, whereas the new study drew from independent assessments and objective standards.

The Big Picture

The surgeon general, Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, has called mental health “the defining public health crisis of our time,” and he has made adolescent mental health central to his mission. In 2021 he issued a rare public advisory on the topic. Statistics at the time revealed alarming trends: From 2001 to 2019, the suicide rate for Americans ages 10 to 19 rose 40 percent, and emergency visits related to self-harm rose 88 percent.

Some policymakers and researchers have blamed the sharp increase on the heavy use of social media, but research has been limited and the findings sometimes contradictory. Other experts theorize that heavy screen use has affected adolescent mental health by displacing sleep, exercise and in-person activity, all of which are considered vital to healthy development. The new study appeared to support the link between physical fitness and mental health.

“The finding underscores the need for further research into targeted physical fitness programs,” its authors concluded. Such programs, they added, “hold significant potential as primary preventative interventions against mental disorders in children and adolescents.”
