5 Collecting Data in Your Classroom

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS

  • What sort of methodological considerations are necessary to collect data in your educational context?
  • What methods of data collection will be most effective for your study?
  • What are the affordances and limitations associated with your data collection methods?
  • What does it mean to triangulate data, and why is it necessary?

As you develop an action plan for your action research project, you will be thinking about the primary task of conducting research, and probably contemplating the data you will collect. It is likely you have asked yourself questions related to the methods you will be using, how you will organize the data collection, and how each piece of data is related within the larger project. This chapter will help you think through these questions.

Data Collection

The data collection methods used in educational research have originated from a variety of disciplines (anthropology, history, psychology, sociology), which has resulted in a variety of research frameworks to draw upon. As discussed in the previous chapter, the challenge for educator-researchers is to develop a research plan and related activities that are focused and manageable to study. While human beings like structure and definitions, especially when we encounter new experiences, educators-as-researchers frequently disregard the accepted frameworks related to research and rely on their own subjective knowledge from their own pedagogical experiences when taking on the role of educator-researcher in educational settings. Relying on subjective knowledge enables teachers to engage more effectively as researchers in their educational context. Educator-researchers especially rely on this subjective knowledge in educational contexts to modify their data collection methodologies. Subjective knowledge negotiates the traditional research frameworks with the data collection possibilities of their practice, while also considering their unique educational context. This empowers educators as researchers, utilizing action research, to be powerful agents for change in educational contexts.

Thinking about Types of Data

Whether the research design is qualitative, quantitative or mixed-methods, it will determine the methods or ways you use to collect data. Qualitative research designs focus on collecting data that is relational, interpretive, subjective, and inductive; whereas a typical quantitative study, collects data that are deductive, statistical, and objective.

In contrast, qualitative data is often in the form of language, while quantitative data typically involves numbers. Quantitative researchers require large numbers of participants for validity, while qualitative researchers use a smaller number of participants, and can even use one (Hatch, 2002). In the past, quantitative and qualitative educational researchers rarely interacted, sometimes holding contempt for each other’s work; and even published articles in separate journals based on having distinct theoretical orientations in terms of data collection. Overall, there is a greater appreciation for both quantitative and qualitative approaches, with scholars finding distinct value in each approach, yet in many circles the debate continues over which approach is more beneficial for educational research and in educational contexts.

The goal of qualitative data collection is to build a complex and nuanced description of social or human problems from multiple perspectives. The flexibility and ability to use a variety of data collection techniques encompasses a distinct stance on research. Qualitative researchers are able to capture conversations and everyday language, as well as situational attitudes and beliefs. Qualitative data collection is able to be fitted to the study, with the goal of collecting the most authentic data, not necessarily the most objective. To researchers who strictly use quantitative methods, qualitative methods may seem wholly unstructured, eclectic, and idiosyncratic; however, for qualitative researchers these characteristics are advantageous to their purpose. Quantitative research depends upon structure and is bounded to find relationship among variables and units of measurement. Quantitative research helps make sense of large amounts of data. Both quantitative and qualitative research help us address education challenges by better identifying what is happening, with the goal of identifying why it is happening, and how we can address it.

Most educator-researchers who engage in research projects in schools and classrooms utilize qualitative methodologies for their data collection. Educator-researchers also use mixed methods that focus on qualitative methods, but also use quantitative methods, such as surveys, to provide a multidimensional approach to inquiring about their topic. While qualitative methods may feel more comfortable, there is a methodological rationale for using quantitative research.

Research methodologists use two distinct forms of logic to describe research: induction and deduction. Inductive approaches are focused on developing new or emerging theories, by explaining the accumulation of evidence that provides meaning to similar circumstances. Deductive approaches move in the opposite direction, and create meaning about a particular situation by reasoning from a general idea or theory about the particular circumstances. While qualitative approaches are inductive – observe and then generate theories, for example – qualitative researchers will typically initiate studies with some preconceived notions of potential theories to support their work.

Flexible Research Design

A researcher’s decisions about data collection and activities involve a personal choice, yet the choice of data sources must be responsive to the proposed project and topic. Logically, researchers will use whatever validated methods help them to address the issue they are researching and will develop a research plan around activities to implement those methods. While a research plan is important to conducting valid research in schools and classrooms, a research plan should also be flexible in design to allow data to emerge and find the best data to address research questions. In this way, a research plan is recommended, but data collection methods are not always known in advance. As you, the educator-researcher, interacts with participants, you may find it necessary to continue the research with additional data sources to better address the question at the center of your research. When educators are researchers and a participant in their study, it is especially important to keep an open mind to the wide range of research methodologies. All-in-all educator-researchers should understand that there are varied and multiple paths to move from research questions to addressing those questions.

Mixed Methods

As mentioned above, mixed methods is the use of both qualitative and quantitative methods. Researchers generally use mixed methods to clarify findings from the initial method of data collection. In mixed-methods research, the educator-researcher has increased flexibility in data collection. Mixed methods studies often result in a combination of precise measurements (e.g., grades, test scores, survey, etc.) along with in-depth qualitative data that provide meaningful detail to those measurements. The key advantage of using mixed methods is that quantitative details enhance qualitative data sources that involve conclusions and use terms such as usually, some, or most which can be substituted with a number or quantity, such as percentages or averages, or the mean, the median, and/or the mode. One challenge to educator-researchers is that mixed methods require more time and resources to complete the study, and more familiarity about both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods.

Mixed methods in educator research, even if quantitative methods are only used minimally, provide an opportunity to clarify findings, fill gaps in understanding, and cross-check data. For example, if you are looking at the use of math journals to better engage students and improve their math scores, it would be helpful to understand their abilities in math and reading before analyzing the math journals. Therefore, looking at their test scores might give you some nuanced understanding of why some students improved more than others after using the math journals. Pre- and post-surveys would also provide valuable information in terms of students’ attitudes and beliefs about math and writing. In line with thinking about pre- and post-surveys, some researchers suggest using either qualitative or quantitative approaches in different phases of the research process. In the previous example, pre- and post test scores may quantitatively demonstrate growth or improvement after implementing the math journal; however, the qualitative data would provide detailed evidence as to why the math journals contributed to growth or improvement in math. Quantitative methods can establish relationships among variables, while qualitative methods can explain factors underlying those same relationships.

I caution the reader at this point to not simply think of qualitative methodologies as anecdotal details to quantitative reports. I only highlight mixed methods to introduce the strength of such studies, and to aid in moving educational research methodology away from the binary thinking of quantitative vs. qualitative. In thinking about data collection, possible data sources include questionnaires or surveys, observations (video or written notes), collaboration (meetings, peer coaching), interviews, tests and records, pictures, diaries, transcripts of video and audio recordings, personal journals, student work samples, e-mail and online communication, and any other pertinent documents and reports. As you begin to think about data collection you will consider the available materials and think about aspects discussed in the previous chapter: who, what, where, when, and how. Specifically:

  • Who are the subjects or participants for the study?
  • What data is vital evidence for this study?
  • Where will the data be collected?
  • When will the data be collected?
  • How will the data be collected?

If you find you are having trouble identifying data sources that support your initial question, you may need to revise your research question – and make sure what you are asking is researchable or measurable. The research question can always change throughout the study, but it should only be in relation the data being collected.

Participant Data

As an educator, your possible participants selection pool is narrower than most researchers encounter – however, it is important to be clear about their role in the data design and collection. A study can involve one participant or multiple participants, and participants often serve as the primary source of data in the research process. Most studies by educator-researchers utilize purposeful sampling, or in other words, they select participants who will be able to provide the most relevant information to the study. Therefore, the study design relies upon the participants and the information they can provide. The following is a description of some data collection methods, which include: surveys or questionnaires, individual or group interviews, observations, field notes or diaries, narratives, documents, and elicitation.

Surveys, or questionnaires, are a research instrument frequently used to receive data about participants’ feelings, beliefs, and attitudes in regard to the research topic or activities. Surveys are often used for large sample sizes with the intent of generalizing from a sample population to a larger population. Surveys are used with any number of participants and can be administered at different times during the study, such as pre-activity and post-activity, with the same participants to determine if changes have occurred over the course of the activity time, or simply change over time. Researchers like surveys and questionnaires as an instrument because they can be distributed and collected easily – especially with all of the recent online application possibilities (e.g., Google, Facebook, etc.). Surveys come in several forms, closed-ended, open-ended, or a mix of the two. Closed-ended surveys are typically multiple-choice questions or scales (e.g. 1-5, most likely–least likely) that allow participants to rate or select a response for each question. These responses can easily be tabulated into meaningful number representations, like percentages. For example, Likert scales are often used with a five-point range, with options such as strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, and strongly disagree. Open-ended surveys consist of prompts for participants to add their own perspectives in short answer or limited word responses. Open-ended surveys are not always as easy to tabulate, but can provide more detail and description.

Interviews and Focus Groups

Interviews are frequently used by researchers because they often produce some of the most worthwhile data. Interviews allow researchers to obtain candid verbal perspectives through structured or semi-structured questioning. Interview questions, either structured or semi-structured, are related to the research question or research activities to gauge the participants’ thoughts, feelings, motivations, and reflections. Some research relies on interviewing as the primary data source, but most often interviews are used to strengthen and support other data sources. Interviews can be time consuming, but interviews are worthwhile in that you can gather richer and more revealing information than other methods that could be utilized (Koshy, 2010). Lincoln and Guba (1985) identified five outcomes of interviewing:

Outcomes of Interviewing

  • Here and now explanations;
  • Reconstructions of past events and experiences;
  • Projections of anticipated experiences;
  • Verification of information from other sources;
  • Verification of information (p. 268).

As mentioned above, interviews typically take two forms: structured and semi-structured. In terms of interviews, structured means that the researcher identifies a certain number of questions, in a prescribed sequence, and the researcher asks each participant these questions in the same order. Structured interviews qualitatively resemble surveys and questionnaires because they are consistent, easy to administer, provide direct responses, and make tabulation and analysis more consistent. Structured interviews use an interview protocol to organize questions, and maintain consistency.

Semi-structured interviews have a prescribed set of questions and protocol, just like structured interviews, but the researcher does not have to follow those questions or order explicitly. The researcher should ask the same questions to each participant for comparison reasons, but semi-structured interviews allow the researcher to ask follow-up questions that stray from the protocol. The semi-structured interview is intended to allow for new, emerging topics to be obtained from participants. Semi-structured questions can be included in more structured protocols, which allows for the participant to add additional information beyond the formal questions and for the researcher to return to preplanned formal questions after the participant responds. Participants can be interviewed individually or collectively, and while individual interviews are time-consuming, they can provide more in-depth information.

When considering more than two participants for an interview, researchers will often use a focus group interview format. Focus group interviews typically involve three to ten participants and seek to gain socially dependent perspectives or organizational viewpoints. When using focus group interviews with students, researchers often find them beneficial because they allow student reflection and ideas to build off of each other. This is important because often times students feel shy or hesitant to share their ideas with adults, but once another student sparks or confirms their idea, belief, or opinion they are more willing to share. Focus group interviews are very effective as pre- and post-activity data sources. Researchers can use either a structured or semi-structured interview protocol for focus group interviews; however, with multiple participants it may be difficult to maintain the integrity of a structured protocol.

Observations

One of the simplest, and most natural, forms of data collection is to engage in formal observation. Observing humans in a setting provides us contextual understanding of the complexity of human behavior and interrelationships among groups in that setting. If a researcher wants to examine the ways teachers approach a particular area of pedagogical practice, then observation would be a viable data collection tool. Formal observations are truly unique and allow the researcher to collect data that cannot be obtained through other data sources. Ethnography is a qualitative research design that provides a descriptive account based on researchers’ observations and explorations to examine the social dynamics present in cultures and social systems – which includes classrooms and schools. Taken from anthropology, the ethnographer uses observations and detailed note taking, along with other forms of mapping or making sense of the context and relationships within. For Creswell (2007), several guidelines provide structure to an observation:

Structuring Observations

  • Identify what to observe
  • Determine the role you will assume — observer or participant
  • Design observational protocol for recording notes
  • Record information such as physical situation, particular events and activities
  • Thank participants and inform them of the use of and their accessibility to the data (pp. 132– 134)

As an educator-researcher, you may take on a role that exceeds that of an observer and participate as a member of the research setting. In this case, the data sources would be called participant observation to clearly identify the degree of involvement you have in the study. In participant observation, the researcher embeds themselves in the actions of the participants. It is important to understand that participant observation will provide completely different data, in comparison to simply observing someone else. Ethnographies, or studies focused completely on observation as a data source, often extend longer than other data sources, ranging from several months to even years. Extended time provides the researcher the ability to obtain more detailed and accurate information, because it takes time to observe patterns and other details that are significant to the study. Self-study is another consideration for educators, if they want to use observation and be a participant observer. They can use video and audio recordings of their activities to use as data sources and use those as the source of observation.

Field Diaries and Notes

Utilizing a field dairy, or keeping field notes, can be a very effective and practical data collection method. In purpose, a field diary or notes keep a record of what happens during the research activities. It can be useful in tracking how and why your ideas and the research process evolved. Many educators keep daily notes about their classes, and in many ways, this is a more focused and narrower version of documenting the daily happenings of a class. A field diary or notes can also serve as an account of your reflections and commentary on your study, and can be a starting place for your data analysis and interpretations. A field diary or notes are typically valuable when researchers begin to write about their project because it allows them to draw upon their authentic voice. The reflective process that represents a diary can also serve as an additional layer of professional learning for researchers. The format and length of a field diary or notes will vary depending on the researching and the topic; however, the ultimate goal should be to facilitate data collection and analysis.

Data narratives and stories are a fairly new form of formalized data. While researchers have collected bits and pieces of narratives in other forms of data, asking participants to compose a narrative (either written, spoken, or performed) as a whole allows researchers to examine how participants embrace the complexities of the context and social interactions. Humans are programmed to engage with and share narratives to develop meaningful and experiential knowledge. Educator autobiographies bring to life personal stories shaped by knowledge, values, and feelings that developed from their classroom experiences. Narrative data includes three primary areas: temporality, sociality, and place (Clandinin & Conolley, 2000). In terms of temporality, narratives have a past, present, and future because stories are time-based and transitional. Sociality highlights the social relationships in narratives as well as the personal and moral dispositions. Place includes the spaces where the narratives happen. Furthermore, bell hooks (1991) notes that narratives, or storytelling, as inquiry can be a powerful way to study how contexts are influenced by power structures, often linking and intersecting the structural dynamics of social class, race, and gender to highlight the struggle.

Documents provide a way to collect data that is unobtrusive to the participant. Documents are unobtrusive data because it is collected without modifying or distracting the research context when gathered. Educational settings maintain records on all sorts of activities in schools: content standards, state mandates, student discipline records, student attendance, student assessments, performance records, parental engagement, records of how teachers spend PTO money, etc. Documents often provide background and contextual material providing a snapshot of school policies, demographic information, ongoing records over a period of time, and contextual details from the site of the research study. Documents can be characterized similarly to historical research, as primary and secondary. Examples of primary materials are first-hand sources from someone in the educational context, such as minutes from a school board or faculty meeting, photographs, video recordings, and letters. Examples of secondary sources typically include analysis or interpretations of a primary source by others, such as texts, critiques, and reviews. Both types of sources are especially valuable in action research.

Elicitation Methods

We have talked about several methods of data collection that each have useful ways of documenting, inquiring, and thinking about the research question. However, how does a researcher engage participants in ways that allow them to demonstrate what they know, feel, think, or believe? Asking participants directly about their thinking, feeling, or beliefs will only take you so far depending on the comfort and rapport the participant has with the researcher. There are always a variety of hurdles in extracting participants’ knowledge. Even the manner in which questions are framed and the way researchers use materials in the research process are equally important in getting participants to provide reliable, comparable, and valid responses. Furthermore, all individuals who participate in research studies vary in their ability to recall and report what they know, and this affects the value of traditional data collection, especially structured and semi-structured interviewing. In particular, participants’ knowledge or other thinking of interest may be implicit and difficult for them to explicate in simple discussion.

Elicitation methods help researchers uncover unarticulated participant knowledge through a potential variety of activities. Researchers will employ elicitation methods and document the participants’ actions and typically the description of why they took those particular actions. Educators may be able to relate the process of elicitation methods to a “think aloud” activity in which the researcher wants to record or document the activity. Elicitation methods can take many forms. What follows are some basic ideas and formats for elicitation methods.

Brainstorming/Concept Map

Most educators are probably familiar with the process of brainstorming or creating a concept map. These can be very effective elicitation methods when the researcher asks the participant to create a concept map or representation of brainstorming, and then asks the participant to explain the connections between concepts or ideas on the brainstorming or concept map.

Sorting provides an engaging way to gather data from your participants. Sorting, as you can imagine, involves participants sorting, grouping, or categorizing objects or photographs in meaningful ways. Once participants have sorted the objects or photographs, the researcher records or documents the participant explaining why they sorted or grouped the objects or photographs in the way that they did. As a former history teacher, I would often use sorting to assess my students’ understanding of related concepts and events in a world history class. I would use pictures too as the means for students to sort and demonstrate what they understood from the unit. Listing/ Ranking

Listing can be an effective way to examine participants’ thinking about a topic. Researchers can have participants construct a list in many different ways to fit the focus of the study and then have the participants explain their list. For example, if an educator was studying middle school student perceptions of careers, they could ask them to complete three lists: Careers in Most Demand; Careers with Most Education/Training; Careers of most Interest.

Then, once participants have filled out the lists, the most important part is documenting them explaining their thinking, and why they filled out the lists the way they did. As you may imagine, in this example, every participant would have a list that is different based on their personal interests.

Researchers can also elicit responses by simply giving participants a prompt, and then asking them to recall whatever they know about that prompt. Researchers will have the participants do this in some sort of demonstrative activity. For example, at the end of a world history course, I might ask students to explain what “culture” means to them and to explain their thinking.

Re-articulation (writing or drawing)

A unique way to engage participants in elicitation methods is to have them write about, rewrite, or draw visual representations of either life experiences or literature that they have read. For example, you could ask them to rewrite a part of the literature they did not like, add a part they thought should be there, or simply extend the ending. Participants can either write or draw these re-articulations. I find that drawing works just as well because, again, the goal is to have participant describe their thinking based on the activity.  

Scenario Decision-Making

Elicitation methods can also examine skills. Researchers can provide participants scenarios and ask them to make decisions. The researchers can document those decisions and analyze the extent to which the participant understands the skill.

  Document, Photograph, or Video Analysis

This is the most basic elicitation in which the researcher provides a document, photograph, or video for the participant to examine. Then, the researcher asks questions about the participants interpretations of the document, photograph, or video. One method that would support this sort of elicitation is to ask the participants to provide images from their everyday words. For example, asking students to document the literacy examples in their homes (i.e., pictures of calendars, bookshelves etc.).  With the availability of one-to-one tech, and iPads, participant documentation is easier.

There are many more methods of data collection also, as well as many variations of the methods described above. The goal for you is to find the data collection methods that are going to give you the best data to answer your research question. If you are unsure, there is nothing wrong with collecting more data than you need to make sure you use effective methods – the only thing you have to lose is time!

Use of Case Studies

Case studies are a popular way for studying phenomena in settings using qualitative methodology. Case studies typically encompass qualitative studies which look closely at what happens when researchers collect data, analyze the data, and present the results. Case studies can focus on a single case or examine a phenomenon across multiple cases. Case studies frame research in a way that allows for rich description of data and depth of analysis.

An advantage of using case study design is that the reader often identifies with the case or phenomena, as well as the participants in the study. Yin (2003) describes case study methodology as inquiry that investigates a contemporary phenomenon within its authentic context. Case studies are particularly appropriate when the boundaries and relationship between the phenomenon and the context are not clear. Case studies relate well with the processes involved in action research. Critics of action research case studies sometimes criticize the inevitable subjectivity, just like general criticisms of action research. Case studies provide researchers opportunities to explore both the how and the why of phenomena in context, while being both exploratory and descriptive.

We want to clarify the differences between methodologies and methods of research. There are methodologies of research, like case study and action research, and methods of data collection. Methodologies like ethnography, narrative inquiry, and case study draw from some similar methods of data collecting that include interviews, collection of artifacts (writings, drawings, images), and observations. The differences between the methodologies include the time-frame for research; the boundaries of the research; and the epistemology.

Triangulation of Data

Triangulation is a method used by qualitative researchers to check and establish trustworthiness in their studies by using and analyzing multiple (three or more) data collection methods to address a research question and develop a consistency of evidence from data sources or approaches. Thus, triangulation facilitates trustworthiness of data through cross verification of evidence, to support claims, from more than two data collection sources. Triangulation also tests the consistency of findings obtained through different data sources and instruments, while minimizing bias in the researcher’s interpretations of the data.

If we think about the example of studying the use of math journals in an elementary classroom, the researcher would want to collect at least three sources of data – the journal prompts, assessment scores, and interviews. When the researcher is analyzing the data, they will want to find themes or evidence across all three data sources to address their research question. In a very basic analysis, if the students demonstrated a deeper level of reflection about math in the journals, their assessment scores improved, and their interviews demonstrated they had more confidence in their number sense and math abilities – then, the researcher could conclude, on a very general level, that math journals improved their students’ math skills, confidence, or abilities. Ideally, the study would examine specific aspects of math to enable deeper analysis of math journals, but this example demonstrates the basic idea of triangulation. In this example, all of the data provided evidence that the intervention of a math journal improved students’ understanding of math, and the three data sources provided trustworthiness for this claim.

Data Collection Checklist

  • Based on your research question, what data might you need ?
  • What are the multiple ways you could collect that data ?
  • How might you document this data , or organize it so that it can be analyzed?
  • What methods are most appropriate for your context and timeframe ?
  • How much time will your data collection require? How much time can you allow for?
  • Will you need to create any data sources (e.g., interview protocol, elicitation materials)?
  • Do your data sources all logically support the research question, and each other?
  • Does your data collection provide for multiple perspectives ?
  • How will your data achieve triangulation in addressing the research question?
  • Will you need more than three data sources to ensure triangulation of data?

The Importance of Quantitative Data Examples in Education

Before delving into specific examples, it’s important to understand the importance of quantitative data in education.

Quantitative data plays a crucial role in education by providing objective evidence of student achievement and progress. Mining educational data allows educators to identify trends and patterns, enabling them to tailor teaching methods and interventions to meet the individual needs of students. For example, if a particular group of students consistently underperforms in standardized tests, quantitative data can help educators identify the specific areas where additional support is needed. This data-driven approach ensures that resources are allocated effectively, and students receive the targeted support they require to succeed.

In addition to informing classroom instruction, quantitative data also plays a significant role in shaping education policies. Policymakers rely on this data to make informed decisions about curriculum development, resource allocation, and educational reforms. Issues surrounding researching in schools

There are tens of thousands of schools in the United Kingdom, which means that observational research which focuses on just one, or a handful of schools will be unrepresentative. This is also a  problem with any of the popular documentary programmes which focus on just one school – they are very interesting as they focus on the stories of the school, and some (but only some) of the pupils and teachers, but they are never going to be representative of all schools!

There are a lot of official statistics available on schools, much of it freely available on the DFES website – information on results, attendance, exclusions are all available, as are the latest OFSTED reports, so using a mixture of secondary qualitative and quantitative data may be a good choice for researchers given that schools are ‘data rich’ institutions.

A researcher could also use official statistics to easily select a sample of schools which represent all the regions in the UK, different OFSTED grades, and/ or different school types.

However, official statistics on education can be misleading – exam results may not reflect the underlying ethos of a school, or show us the difficulties a particular school faces, and schools can manipulate their data to an extent – for example, they can reduce their exclusion statistics by ‘off-rolling pupils’ – getting parents to agree to withdraw them before they exclude them.

Schools are potentially very convenient places to conduct research – because the law requires pupils to attend and teachers/ managers need to attend to keep their jobs, you can be reasonably certain that most people you want to research are going to be in attendance! You have a captive audience!

However, school gatekeepers (i.e. head teachers) may be reluctant to allow researchers into schools: they may see research as disruptive, fearing it may interfere with their duty to educate students.

Schools are also highly organised, ‘busy’ institutions – researchers may find it difficult to find the time to ask questions of pupils and teachers during the day, meaning interviews could be a problem, limiting the researcher to less representative observational research.

The researcher will also need to ensure they blend-in, otherwise they may be seen as an outsider by teachers and students alike, which would not be conducive to getting respondents to open up and provide valid information.

Introduction:.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had widespread effects on adolescent mental health. However, little is known about support-seeking, unmet need and preferences for mental health care among adolescents.

The Youth Development Instrument (YDI) is a school-administered survey of adolescents (N=1928, mean age=17.1, SD=0.3) across British Columbia, Canada. In this cohort, we assessed the characteristics of accessed mental health supports, prevalence of unmet need and preferences for in-person versus internet-based services.

Overall, 40% of adolescents obtained support for mental health, while 41% experienced unmet need. The most commonly accessed supports were family doctors or pediatricians (23.1%) and adults at school (20.6%). The most preferred mode of mental health care was in-person counselling (72.4%), followed by chat-based services (15.0%), phone call (8.1%) and video call (4.4%). The adjusted prevalence of accessing support was elevated among adolescents with anxiety (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR]=1.29, 95%CI:1.10–1.51), those who used alcohol (1.14, 1.01–1.29), gender minorities (1.28, 1.03–1.58) and sexual minorities (1.28, 1.03–1.45). The adjusted prevalence of unmet need was elevated among adolescents with depression (1.90, 1.67–2.18), those with anxiety (1.78, 1.56–2.03), females (1.43, 1.31–1.58), gender minorities (1.45, 1.23–1.70) and sexual minorities (1.15, 1.07–1.23).

Conclusion:

Adolescents of gender or sexual minority status and those with anxiety were more likely than others to have discussed mental health concerns and also to have reported unmet need. The most common sources of support were primary health care providers and adults at school, while the most and least preferred modes of support were in-person and video call services, respectively.

To date, a large body of literature has examined the characteristics associated with poor adolescent mental health during this period, 5 identifying both risk and protective factors. 1 , 6 Some studies have further examined access to mental health services during the pandemic through administrative records, including pediatric emergency department visits 7 , 8 and specialist mental health referrals. 9 , 10 These studies provide key information regarding mental health service provision during the pandemic, as they are not limited by response bias or participant recall. However, there is limited evidence surrounding access to less emergent or specialist forms of mental health support, such as family doctors or teachers.

Few studies have examined adolescents in the general population rather than solely adolescent patients included in administrative records. 11 This is an important gap, as administrative records do not allow for assessment of unmet need, since they include only adolescents who have already accessed care. Administrative records also do not allow for calculation of the prevalence of support-seeking in a general adolescent sample, since they are limited to patient participants and to particular forms of mental health support.

There is also limited evidence around adolescent perceptions of virtual mental health care, which rapidly increased during the pandemic. 12 , 13 Despite virtual care becoming more accessible, it is unknown how adolescents feel about online services, or which forms of virtual support they most prefer. One online survey found that a majority of young people with internalizing disorders would be willing to consider virtual services; 4 however, this study included young adults up to 29 years of age and did not measure actual access to support. Thus, despite the pandemic revealing vulnerabilities in youth mental health, there remain clear gaps in our understanding of adolescent support-seeking, unmet need and preferences regarding mental health services.

We therefore sought to assess the prevalence of accessing mental health support by adolescents in British Columbia during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as characteristics associated with support-seeking and unmet mental health care needs. We further sought to identify the main sources of mental health support and the preferred delivery format for mental health services by adolescents during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Using this information, we aimed to comment on the optimal setting, mode of delivery and target populations for adolescent mental health interventions during and after the pandemic period.

The context: school responses to COVID-19 in British Columbia

Unlike many other Canadian provinces and US states, British Columbia maintained mostly in-person learning throughout the winter and spring of 2021, 14 allowing for in-person survey delivery. However, like elsewhere across the globe, adolescent extracurriculars, recreational activities and social gatherings were prohibited. In June 2020, the provincial government invested CAD 5 million towards the expansion of mental health resources, 15 the majority of which went to developing e-mental health interventions. 13 , 15 , 16 However, it is unknown how adolescents felt about this care model, or how well digital services served mental health needs.

Ethics approval

This study was approved by the UBC Behavioural Research Ethics Board.

Setting and participants

The Youth Development Instrument (YDI) is an in-school, computerized survey of secondary school students, conducted in partnership with select school districts in British Columbia (BC), the Human Early Learning Partnership at the University of British Columbia (HELP-UBC) and clinical, community, youth and government advisors. The YDI measures well-being and development in a general population sample of students enrolled at BC secondary schools. In this setting, schools maintained mostly in-person learning throughout the winter and spring of 2021, allowing for in-person survey delivery. From February to June 2021, high schools within selected school districts invited Grade 11 students to participate in the study during a designated delivery day or week. Due to small class sizes, one independent school additionally surveyed students in Grades 10 and 12 (n=50). Overall, the mean age was 17.1 years (standard deviation=0.3), with 99.9% of the sample falling between the ages of 16 and 18 years.

Data for the YDI were collected from February to June 2021 and included all eligible students in six participating school districts and one independent high school. Two months prior to survey delivery, participating schools were provided with an administration guide to maximize implementation consistency. At least one month prior to survey delivery, passive consent letters were distributed to student parents and guardians with the aim of limiting systemic selection bias. Students additionally provided assent after reviewing complete information about the study and having the opportunity to ask follow-up questions.

Most participants completed the survey online using school or personal devices during class hours. Four schools additionally emailed a link to a virtual survey for students who were absent during in-school delivery (n=32). The survey was administered using the University of British Columbia Survey Tool hosted by Qualtrics, and took an average of 45 minutes to complete. All data were stored with Population Data BC, a multi-university data and education repository for individual-level data with robust privacy, confidentiality and security protocols.

Access to mental health support was assessed using the stem question “In the past 6 months, did you see or talk to anyone from the following places about any concerns you may have had about your mental health?” Response options were “Family doctor or pediatrician’s office,” “Walk-in clinic,” “Urgent care clinic, hospital or emergency room,” “Agency that provides mental health care or addiction services for children or adolescents,” “A psychiatrist, a psychologist, a social worker or some other type of counsellor” and “Teacher, adult or counsellor at school.” Students with a positive response to one or more of these options were categorized as having accessed a mental health support in the last six months.

Unmet mental health care need was assessed using the question “In the past 6 months, was there ever a time when you felt you might need professional help for mental health concerns (i.e. problems with emotions, attention, behaviours or use of drugs or alcohol) but you did not seek help?” Students who responded “Yes” were categorized has having unmet mental health care needs.

Additionally, students were asked to rank their preferred delivery format for receiving mental health care, including in-person, phone call, Internet (including website and online chat/text) and video call.

Mental health and substance use indicators

Depression and anxiety were measured using validated screening tools used frequently in population surveys and clinical settings: the Patient Health Questionnaire 8 (PHQ-8) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire 2 (GAD-2). Respondents who scored ≥10 on the PHQ-8 screened positive for depression, while those who scored ≥3 on the GAD-2 screened positive for anxiety. 17 , 18 Alcohol and cannabis use were measured using the questions “How many times in the last 4 weeks have you drunk alcohol (wine, liquor, beer, coolers)?” and “How many times in the last 4 weeks have you smoked cannabis (marijuana)?” Potential responses included “Never done this,” “Not in the last 4 weeks,” “One or a few times,” “Weekly,” “Most days,” and “Almost every day.” Consistent with prior studies, 8 , 19 any alcohol or cannabis use was defined using a cut-off of “One or a few times,” while near-daily alcohol or cannabis use was defined using a cut-off of “Most days.” 19 , 20

Demographic characteristics

Demographic characteristics included gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation and socioeconomic status. Gender was identified by asking participants “How do you describe your gender?”, with response options “Boy” (reference), “Girl” and “In another way.” Ethnicity was identified by asking participants to choose from a list of options consistent with those listed in the Canadian census. We used responses to this question to define three broad ethnicity categories: White (reference), Asian and Other. These categories were chosen because they were the largest ethnicity categories in our sample, as well as in British Columbia as a whole. 21 An a priori decision to use three categories was made in light of sample size and methodological considerations around the need to preserve degrees of freedom in statistical analyses.

Sexual orientation was identified using the question stem “Do you identify as:” with response options “Heterosexual/straight,” “Gay/lesbian,” “Bisexual/pansexual,” “Asexual,” “Queer,” “Questioning/unsure” and “If none of the above (or if you would like to choose multiple categories), please specify: __.” Due to sample size considerations, sexual orientation was dichotomized to heterosexual and sexual minorities.

Socioeconomic status was measured using the revised six-item Family Affluence Scale, a continuous scale that has been validated in numerous youth samples. 22 , 23

Statistical analysis

As students were surveyed within their given high schools, the data in the current study were clustered by school. To account for this clustering, data were analyzed using a modified Poisson regression, as described by Zou et al. 24 This model specifies a log link function with a Poisson distribution and robust standard errors in order to approximate the risk ratio when outcome prevalence exceeds 20%, as is the case in the current study. As our study was cross-sectional, the use of modified Poisson regression allowed for the calculation of adjusted prevalence ratios, which describe the relative adjusted prevalence of an outcome in one exposure group versus another.

We tested the crude and adjusted associations of mental health conditions, substance use and demographic characteristics with (1) accessing any mental health care support and (2) reporting any unmet mental health care need during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mental health conditions included depression and anxiety, while substance use included past-month drinking and cannabis use. Demographic characteristics included gender (male, female, other), sexual orientation (heterosexual, sexual minority), ethnicity (White, Asian, other), and family affluence (continuous Family Affluence Scale score). Adjusted models controlled for all other mental health and demographic characteristics. Adjusted estimates were therefore derived from one of two models: one examining all predictors and having accessed mental health support, and one examining all predictors and self-identified unmet need. All statistical analyses were conducted using SAS version 9.4 (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, US) and considered two-tailed differences of p <0.05 statistically significant.

Of the 3795 adolescents invited to participate in the study, 2350 completed the survey (response rate=61.9%). After removing outliers (i.e. participants with average response times under 2 seconds, n=44) and those with missing exposure or outcome data (n=378), the final sample included 1928 students (82.0% of all respondents) from 31 unique high school programs. Overall, included participants had a higher proportion of girls (47.5% vs. 37.3% among excluded participants) and higher scores on the Family Affluence Scale (3rd quartile=38.6% vs. 31.8%, 4th quartile 17.2% vs. 13.5%). There were no other significant differences between included and excluded participants (data available upon request from the authors). Sample characteristics are presented in Table 1 .

What was the prevalence of mental health conditions and substance use among adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Overall, 39.7% of the sample screened positively for depression, 43.7% screened positively for generalized anxiety, 26.8% reported using alcohol in the past month, 2.0% reported using alcohol near daily in the past month, 16.8% reported using cannabis in the past month and 7.3% reported using cannabis near daily in the past month. Among adolescents who drank in the past month, 7.4% did so on a near-daily basis, while among adolescents who smoked cannabis, 43.3% did so on a near-daily basis. Compared to males, depression and anxiety were more common among females (depression: 50.8% vs. 27.0%; anxiety: 60.3% vs. 25.8%) and gender minority students (depression: 79.6% vs. 27.0%; anxiety: 79.6% vs. 25.8%). Depression and anxiety were also more common among students who reported belonging to a sexual minority group compared to heterosexual students (depression: 65.1% vs. 32.6%; anxiety: 68.4% vs. 36.8%). A detailed breakdown of mental health and substance use by demographic characteristics is presented in Table 2 .

What was the prevalence of accessing support and unmet mental health care need among adolescents? Which mode of mental health support was most preferred?

Of the sample, 40.3% accessed a mental health support in the past six months, while 59.7% did not. Similarly, 40.8% experienced unmet need for mental health care, while 59.2% did not. Mental health support was accessed by approximately half of those who screened positive for depression, anxiety, past-month drinking or past-month cannabis use. Unmet need was reported by nearly 70% of adolescents with depression or anxiety, 55% of adolescents with past-month drinking and 60% of adolescents with past-month cannabis use. Overall, the most commonly accessed supports were family doctors or pediatricians (23.1%); teachers, adults or counsellors at school (20.6%); and mental health professionals (14.9%). The most preferred mode of mental health care was in-person counselling (72.4%), followed by Internet (including website and online chat/text; 15.0%), phone call (8.1%) and video call (4.4%). A detailed breakdown of mental health support access and unmet need by mental health status is presented in Table 3 .

Which adolescent characteristics were associated with accessing support?

In adjusted analyses, anxiety was associated with a 29% increase in the prevalence of accessing mental health support (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR]=1.29, 95% CI:1.11–1.51), while alcohol use was associated with a 14% increase in the prevalence of accessing mental health support (1.14, 1.01–1.29). Neither depression (1.11, 0.96–1.28) nor cannabis use (1.12, 0.96–1.31) was significantly associated with accessing mental health support ( Table 4 ).

With respect to demographic characteristics, gender minority status was associated with a 28% increase in the prevalence of accessing mental health support compared to males (aPR=1.28, 95% CI: 1.03–1.59), while sexual minority status was associated with a 23% increase in accessing support compared to heterosexuals (1.23, 1.04–1.45). The adjusted prevalence of accessing mental health support was not significantly elevated among females compared to males (1.17, 1.00–1.38), minority ethnicities (Asian vs. White: 0.92,0.78–1.08; Other vs. White: 1.02, 0.90–1.16) or adolescents with lower family affluence (0.99, 0.96–1.01; Table 4 ).

Which adolescent characteristics were associated with unmet mental health care needs?

In adjusted analyses, depression was associated with a 90% increase in the prevalence of reporting unmet need (aPR=1.91, 95% CI: 1.67–2.18), while anxiety was associated with a 78% increase in the prevalence of reporting unmet need (1.78, 1.55–2.03). Neither alcohol use (1.11, 0.98–1.25) nor cannabis use (1.09, 0.97–1.22) was significantly associated with unmet need for mental health care ( Table 4 ).

With respect to demographic characteristics, the prevalence of unmet need for mental health support was 43% higher among females compared to males (aPR=1.43, 95% CI: 1.30–1.58), 45% higher among gender minority adolescents compared to males (1.45, 1.23–1.70) and 15% higher among sexual minorities compared to heterosexual students (1.15, 1.08–1.23). Compared to White students, Asian students had a 33% lower prevalence of unmet need (0.67, 0.60–0.76). The prevalence of unmet need was not significantly different for other minority ethnicities (0.98, 0.92–1.04) or adolescents with lower family affluence (0.99, 0.97–1.01; Table 4 ).

This study examined the association of varying mental health and demographic characteristics with (1) accessing mental health support, and (2) experiencing unmet need for mental health care among adolescents in BC, Canada, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to examining access and unmet need, we descriptively examined which forms of mental health support were most commonly used, and which modes of mental health care were most preferable to adolescents. We highlight five major findings:

1. Symptoms of depression and anxiety were extremely common, with approximately 40% of adolescents screening positive for each of these conditions. High-frequency cannabis use was also common, with 43% of adolescents who used cannabis in the past month reporting smoking on a near-daily basis.

2. The most commonly accessed mental health supports were family doctors or pediatricians, followed by adults at school, highlighting the importance of primary care and school-based interventions in addressing adolescent mental health.

3. The most preferred mode of mental health care delivery was in-person (72%), while the least preferred mode was video call (4%), suggesting that video call–based counselling services may not be the ideal e-health intervention for addressing adolescent needs.

4. Adjusting for covariates, the rate of accessing mental health support was significantly elevated among adolescents with anxiety, past-month drinking, gender minority status and nonheterosexual orientation.

5. Adjusting for covariates, the rate of unmet mental health need was significantly elevated among adolescents with depression, anxiety, female gender, nonbinary gender and nonheterosexual orientation, suggesting that these groups are in need of more targeted mental health intervention during the pandemic.

Overall, our results suggest a number of important recommendations for developing mental health interventions aimed at adolescents during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

First, in order to reach the broadest range of youth, this study suggests that interventions should focus on primary care and school settings. Consistent with prior literature, 25 - 27 we found family physicians, pediatricians, teachers and school counsellors to be the most common sources of mental health support for adolescents. It is important that primary care providers be aware of this important role in adolescents’ lives, and screen for mental health problems accordingly. Our finding that adults at school were common sources of mental health support may have been, in part, due to the relative inaccessibility of professional counselling services and the continuation of in-person classes in British Columbia during the pandemic. As stated above, British Columbia maintained mostly in-person learning throughout the winter and spring of 2021, 14 potentially mitigating some of the social isolation due to online-only learning for many secondary school students. 28 Nevertheless, rates of mental health problems were high in this sample, with nearly half of adolescents screening positively for anxiety or depression. Like primary care physicians, teachers and school counsellors remain an extremely important source of support for adolescents. Maintaining the availability of this support should be prioritized during and after the pandemic.

Second, our study provides recommendations regarding the mode of mental health care delivery best suited to adolescent populations. After in-person care, the most popular forms of service delivery were chat-based communication (including website, online chat and text) and phone calls. The least preferred form of service delivery was video call, a finding that was consistent across adolescents with varying mental health concerns. Ironically, at the start of the pandemic in British Columbia, video call–based services saw some of the largest growth in funding and accessibility for adolescents. 13 , 15 , 16 This study suggests that text- and phone-based services may appeal to a wider range of this population.

Third, our results help provide recommendations for targeting and better customizing youth mental health interventions. Accessing mental health support was associated with anxiety, minority gender status and nonheterosexual orientation. However, experiencing unmet need for services was correlated with depression, anxiety, female gender, gender minority status and nonheterosexual orientation. These groups are consistent with those in other studies who suffered the greatest mental health consequences due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 4 , 5 , 29 - 31 This study further suggests that many of these adolescents are not accessing desired care, particularly females and those with depression, who were more likely than others to report unmet need but not more likely to access care.

Strengths and limitations

To our knowledge, this is one of the only studies to examine primary support-seeking by a general population sample of adolescents during the pandemic, or to assess self-identified unmet need for services.

Still, this study has several limitations. First, although all eligible students in participating secondary schools were included in the sampling frame, our initial sample of schools was drawn on the basis of convenience and included primarily adolescents aged 17. Therefore, this sample was not representative of the entire BC adolescent population. Additionally, it is possible that there was some response bias in favour of females and adolescents with higher family affluence scores, as these groups were less likely to have missing data in our sample. Still, the effect size of these differences was small, and there were no significant differences by ethnicity, sexuality, depression status, anxiety status, past-month alcohol use or past-month cannabis use.

Second, students were asked to recall whether they had accessed support or felt unmet need in the past six months, creating the potential for recall bias. It is possible that adolescents with symptoms of depression or anxiety were more likely to remember speaking to an adult about their problems. Some students may have underestimated their past-month substance use frequency, and we may not have accurately captured students who did not recognize their need for mental health support.

Third, while mood disorders were measured over the prior two weeks, support access and unmet need were measured over the prior six months. Students who received successful care, or recovered from mental health problems without receipt of care, were categorized as screening negatively for mental health problems in our dataset. Future studies should use longitudinal data to compare the relative success of different mental health supports.

Fourth, some students may have misreported information due to social desirability bias or fear of repercussions. To mitigate this, students were assured that their data would not be shared with their peers, parents or schools and were informed of safeguards used to ensure the privacy and security of their responses.

Fifth, since the study setting had only minor school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic, results may not be generalizable to adolescents who completed school from home throughout the pandemic. However, if in-person schooling is believed to be protective against poor mental health outcomes, our results may be interpreted as underestimating unmet need.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, adolescents with depression, anxiety, female gender, gender minority status and nonheterosexual orientation were at particular risk of experiencing mental health problems and unmet need. Future interventions should aim to expand outreach to these underserved groups, emphasizing the role of primary care, school-based interventions and in-person services. Virtual interventions should offer phone- and chat-based services, which were consistently more preferable to adolescents than video calling.

Australia has a food allergy crisis impacting 10 per cent of infants, but critical research is underway

When Rupert Hastings first tried peanut butter at just six months old he reacted almost instantly.

Within 20 seconds, he had hives all over his face, which spread to his body. Then his eyes and lips started to swell.

"My friend's a nurse and I messaged her pictures of Rupert's reaction. She said I'd probably take him to hospital, so that's what we did," Rupert's mother, Emily says.

"It was scary."

Now, Rupert is 15 months old and is severely allergic to peanuts and egg, and mildly allergic to Brazil nuts and sunflower seeds. 

Emily says the journey has been "incredibly hard".

"We found the information hard to gather and then decipher what was the best course for Rupert and we still don't know what the best course of action is," she says.

They had been seeing an allergist in Brisbane, but are now travelling 1,000km to Sydney to see a specialist in oral immunotherapy.

It's a treatment for allergies, not currently approved in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

"But reading through all the research papers and speaking to some other families who have had really great results on it, I think it's something that we definitely need to explore," Emily says.

"That's something that we have to weigh up as his parents.

"Do we strictly avoid the allergy and the peanut, and he lives his life for the rest of time with an Epipen, constantly avoiding 'may contain' or anything that has peanuts in it?

"Or do we try something and in the process risk anaphylactic reactions, but potentially desensitise him to peanuts so that he has a freer life?"

'We've got a big problem'

Allergic disease is one of Australia’s greatest public health challenges, with one in 10 children developing a proven food allergy in their first year of life.

The most common in the first twelve months is egg, but generally it is outgrown by six years old.

However, three quarters of those with an allergy to peanuts, tree nuts, sesame and seafood carry the allergy into adulthood.

According to data released to the ABC, the number of children being admitted to hospital with anaphylaxis is also rising.

In Queensland alone, there was a more than 300 per cent increase in the number of children between 0-17 years who were admitted to hospital with anaphylaxis and anaphylactic shock due to adverse food reaction in the past decade to the 2022/2023 financial year.

Queensland Health says it is unclear whether this reflects a true increase in allergy prevalence or improvements in awareness, diagnosis, and healthcare practices in the past 10 years.

However, national figures from the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care also reflect a rise in emergency presentations for anaphylaxis — 51 per cent in the five years to 2019/2020.

But there is still a lack of specialist services available to families, and the Australian Department of Health says the only approved treatment available for severe food allergies is adrenaline in emergencies.

The current advice is still strict avoidance of the allergens. For families like the Hastings, it means constantly being on edge.

"It's always on our mind, we have to watch what we eat if we go out to restaurants," Emily says.

"And obviously, we have to pack an Epipen for him wherever we go, so it's something that you can't forget about.

"I'm now back at work, and that's something to consider when he's not in my care — about what can potentially go wrong.

"All those things that you think about normally as a parent, it's then heightened by the fact that this is something that is severe.

"You think about allergies and you think, 'Oh yeah, that would be hard', but until you're faced with it, and it's your own child's life, it's a whole different ball game."

Paediatric immunologist and allergist Dr Jane Peake says Australia is known to be the “allergy capital of the world”.

“We've got a big problem in Australia,” she says.

“There’s still a lot of work to do, but I do think that there’s a lot of inroads starting to happen.”

In Queensland, the only public paediatric multidisciplinary specialist immunology and allergy clinic is at the Queensland Children’s hospital.

In 2023, QPIAS Specialists saw almost 7,000 patients from across the state — 1,595 of them were new patients.

Riley Bloomfield has been travelling from Rockhampton with his mum Nicole for years to see Dr Peake — first for a dust mite allergy, and now for dairy and beef.

"We’d have to come back to Brisbane every six months while he was undergoing that desensitisation [for dust mites] and that lasted three to four years," Nicole says.

"It’s definitely made a difference to his day-to-day life, just for that dust mite allergy.  To get rid of that at least has been huge, and that’s all thanks to the clinic here."

Dr Peake says work is underway to educate and upskill general practitioners, paediatricians, nurses, pharmacists and dieticians, to help manage mild allergies, or allergy concerns across the country. 

"We do need more allergists and immunologists in Australia and there is a number of doctors in training," Dr Peake says.

"[But] we need to continue to look at how we make best use of our time and so we're always looking at new ways of managing patients.

"One of the positive things that came out of COVID is the fact that we can now do a lot of telehealth consultations. So we're often doing that with patients for the first time, particularly if they live in rural or remote areas."

Inquiry recognised Australia's allergy problem

The exact cause in the rise of Australia's food allergy is still unknown.

Placed under the spotlight in a 2019 bipartisan parliamentary inquiry, 24 recommendations were made to address the critical need for a national action plan.

In 2022, federal government funding saw the establishment of the National Allergy Centre of Excellence (NACE) and the National Allergy Council.

The NACE, now the country's peak allergy research body, will help accelerate research and streamline the start-up of clinical trials across the country.

The Murdoch Children's Research Institute, which hosts the NACE, has become the lead site for several allergy trials, and Professor Kirsten Perrett is the principal investigator on eight.

"For the first time we have an Australian allergy research body, bringing together experts in drug, food, insect and respiratory allergic disease to address this national critical problem," Professor Perrett says.

"This is a critical step forward in our fight against all aspects of allergic disease.

"The clinical trials network helps to give Australian families faster access to emerging treatment options, many of which are already under investigation overseas."

Fifteen-year-old Ted Wardle is taking part in one of the multi-centre national trials called Aravax, which is investigating a novel immunotherapy injection.

He's struggled with a peanut allergy from birth, and says it impacts his daily life.

"If I'm hanging out with my friends I always have to double check what I'm about to eat or sometimes I won't be able to eat the same things that my friends will have," he says.

"It's always a presence… I've got to be careful, I've got to check what I'm about to eat.

"[Otherwise] I get rashes, my throat can close up, I get really itchy – I could die."

The trial is currently looking for four to 11 year olds in Victoria, Western Australia, New South Wales and South Australia.

The injection aims to retrain the immune system to tolerate peanut allergens and reduce the risk of severe reactions.

At MCRI and Queensland Children's Hospital, another peanut trial is underway using a drug patch, VITESSE.

"Which has been very promising," Dr Jane Peake says. 

"That was in young children aged one to three. We're now enrolling patients from four to seven."

It works by exposing a small amount of peanut protein via the skin, designed to desensitise a person through repeated exposures.

The trial is currently recruiting four to seven year olds in Victoria, Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia. 

'People are looking for that holy grail'

Researchers hope with ongoing support from the Australian government, community and industry partners, they can keep the "momentum going".

"To change the trajectory of allergic disease in Australia, it’s going to take a collaborative approach," Professor Perrett says. 

Dr Peake says people often look at Australia as being very "conservative" in the way it manages allergies.

"I think that's because we do seem to have allergies in the more severe end of the spectrum," she says.

"But more importantly, I think we're really very keen to be sure that we're doing safe evidence-based care."

Dr Peake says it isn't a "one size fits all".

"And I think we have to be really careful to select the right patients for any treatment option, and to consider always the pros and the cons of those treatments," she says.

"I think we have a lot of people looking for that holy grail, the cure of their child's allergies, and I think that that's still probably a little bit elusive."

About 1 in 4 U.S. teachers say their school went into a gun-related lockdown in the last school year

Twenty-five years after the mass shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado , a majority of public K-12 teachers (59%) say they are at least somewhat worried about the possibility of a shooting ever happening at their school. This includes 18% who say they’re extremely or very worried, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to better understand public K-12 teachers’ views on school shootings, how prepared they feel for a potential active shooter, and how they feel about policies that could help prevent future shootings.

To do this, we surveyed 2,531 U.S. public K-12 teachers from Oct. 17 to Nov. 14, 2023. The teachers are members of RAND’s American Teacher Panel, a nationally representative panel of public school K-12 teachers recruited through MDR Education. Survey data is weighted to state and national teacher characteristics to account for differences in sampling and response to ensure they are representative of the target population.

We also used data from our 2022 survey of U.S. parents. For that project, we surveyed 3,757 U.S. parents with at least one child younger than 18 from Sept. 20 to Oct. 2, 2022. Find more details about the survey of parents here .

Another 31% of teachers say they are not too worried about a shooting occurring at their school. Only 7% of teachers say they are not at all worried.

This survey comes at a time when school shootings are at a record high (82 in 2023) and gun safety continues to be a topic in 2024 election campaigns .

Teachers’ experiences with lockdowns

About a quarter of teachers (23%) say they experienced a lockdown in the 2022-23 school year because of a gun or suspicion of a gun at their school. Some 15% say this happened once during the year, and 8% say this happened more than once.

High school teachers are most likely to report experiencing these lockdowns: 34% say their school went on at least one gun-related lockdown in the last school year. This compares with 22% of middle school teachers and 16% of elementary school teachers.

Teachers in urban schools are also more likely to say that their school had a gun-related lockdown. About a third of these teachers (31%) say this, compared with 19% of teachers in suburban schools and 20% in rural schools.

Do teachers feel their school has prepared them for an active shooter?

About four-in-ten teachers (39%) say their school has done a fair or poor job providing them with the training and resources they need to deal with a potential active shooter.

A smaller share (30%) give their school an excellent or very good rating, and another 30% say their school has done a good job preparing them.

Teachers in urban schools are the least likely to say their school has done an excellent or very good job preparing them for a potential active shooter. About one-in-five (21%) say this, compared with 32% of teachers in suburban schools and 35% in rural schools.

Teachers who have police officers or armed security stationed in their school are more likely than those who don’t to say their school has done an excellent or very good job preparing them for a potential active shooter (36% vs. 22%).

Overall, 56% of teachers say they have police officers or armed security stationed at their school. Majorities in rural schools (64%) and suburban schools (56%) say this, compared with 48% in urban schools.

Only 3% of teachers say teachers and administrators at their school are allowed to carry guns in school. This is slightly more common in school districts where a majority of voters cast ballots for Donald Trump in 2020 than in school districts where a majority of voters cast ballots for Joe Biden (5% vs. 1%).

What strategies do teachers think could help prevent school shootings?

The survey also asked teachers how effective some measures would be at preventing school shootings.

Most teachers (69%) say improving mental health screening and treatment for children and adults would be extremely or very effective.

About half (49%) say having police officers or armed security in schools would be highly effective, while 33% say the same about metal detectors in schools.

Just 13% say allowing teachers and school administrators to carry guns in schools would be extremely or very effective at preventing school shootings. Seven-in-ten teachers say this would be not too or not at all effective.

How teachers’ views differ by party

Republican and Republican-leaning teachers are more likely than Democratic and Democratic-leaning teachers to say each of the following would be highly effective:

  • Having police officers or armed security in schools (69% vs. 37%)
  • Having metal detectors in schools (43% vs. 27%)
  • Allowing teachers and school administrators to carry guns in schools (28% vs. 3%)

And while majorities in both parties say improving mental health screening and treatment would be highly effective at preventing school shootings, Democratic teachers are more likely than Republican teachers to say this (73% vs. 66%).

Parents’ views on school shootings and prevention strategies

In fall 2022, we asked parents a similar set of questions about school shootings.

Roughly a third of parents with K-12 students (32%) said they were extremely or very worried about a shooting ever happening at their child’s school. An additional 37% said they were somewhat worried.

As is the case among teachers, improving mental health screening and treatment was the only strategy most parents (63%) said would be extremely or very effective at preventing school shootings. And allowing teachers and school administrators to carry guns in schools was seen as the least effective – in fact, half of parents said this would be not too or not at all effective. This question was asked of all parents with a child younger than 18, regardless of whether they have a child in K-12 schools.

Like teachers, parents’ views on strategies for preventing school shootings differed by party.
