How to Write the Indiana University Bloomington Essay 2023-2024

Located in Bloomington, Indiana, Indiana University Bloomington — often known as IU — is a large public research university with a reputation of being known as a “ Public Ivy .” Offering a more affordable, yet intensive education, IU is a popular choice among applicants who are looking for a rigorous environment. The school is consistently ranked in the top 100 national universities.

With programs such as the Kelley School of Business, the School of Education, and the School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, IU provides students with a wide array of academic opportunity. Beyond coursework, however, the university also boasts an active social life, with a decent portion of its student body participating in Greek life.

IU’s supplemental essay is an important part of the college application process. There is no need to worry — CollegeVine has prepared the following guide to help you tackle this essay.

Indiana University Bloomington Supplemental Essay Prompt

Describe your academic and career plans and any special interests (e.g., undergraduate research, academic interests, leadership opportunities, etc.) that you are eager to pursue as an undergraduate at indiana university. if you encountered any unusual circumstances, challenges, or obstacles in completing your education, share those experiences and how you overcame them. (200-400 words).

This prompt is essentially a “ Why This Major ?” and “ Why This College? ” essay combined. Readers are looking to understand which of IU’s programs and opportunities you will take advantage of to further your career. First, discuss your academic and career interests and goals; second, explain how Indiana University specifically would help you reach these aspirations.

The first part of this essay should ideally answer the question: What do you want to be when you grow up? This part of the essay should present a cohesive picture of your passion in a specific academic field. Start off with a personal anecdote that showcases your interest in a single course of study or future career.

Keep this introduction concise, yet vivid, grasping the reader’s attention. For example, you could begin with a description of performing the oboe in a dark, packed auditorium on a bright stage at the state symphony, or the immense pride and relief you feel after distributing the school newspaper you and your staff worked on for countless hours.

Next, detail your accomplishments and experience in this field — remember to show more than tell. Provide evidence of your interest through your actions during a research project or an extracurricular activity. For example, instead of saying “I like both science and art,” illustrate the year you spent researching the brain’s ability to store memories through Dali’s paintings, and how this caused you to view the process of recollection as more of an art rather than a hard science, leading to your desire to study both neuroscience and art history. Not only does this show your interest in both fields, it also implies you are curious and innovative.

This paragraph is also a chance to portray your ability to grow and conquer challenges in your given field. So, rather than writing “I won state for Mock Trial,” describe the struggles you overcame and the growth you experienced in your role as president of your school’s mock trial team. By weaving narration throughout the paragraph, you will be able to portray a more authentic and unique story.

Lastly, connect your aspirations to IU. Specificity is key here. Avoid being vague and general with sweeping statements like “Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business is perfect for me” or “As a student at IU, I could study abroad.” Vague statements demonstrate a lack of interest and lack of effort. Research and learn about the qualities and programs that make Indiana University unique and special to your needs. What are unique programs or extracurriculars at Indiana University, and what will they teach you? What is a quality of IU that is important to you? Avoid generic responses that could apply to any other university.

If you want to be an investment banker through Kelley, describe the focused skillset you will gain from the school’s investment banking workshop, or the network you will create from the small classes and tight-knit community of the Kelley Business Honors Program. An aspiring global correspondent could describe the IU’s worldly approach towards learning and interning in London through the Media School’s “Summer in London” program.

Your primary goal is to connect your accomplishments and aspirations with the opportunities that await you at IU; however, avoid listing every possible activity you could participate in and stay focused.

  • Start with a personal, vivid anecdote conveying your interest in a single field.
  • Share a narrative of you overcoming an obstacle in this field; provide evidence of your experience in this interest.
  • Describe the essence or quality of a program or activity at IU that would help you grow in this area.

What's up guys? I'm looking into the IU Kelley School of Business and I heard something about a petition process for admissions. Can anyone explain what that's all about and how it works? Thanks for the help!

Hey! I can definitely shed some light on the IU Kelley petition process. The petition process essentially allows applicants who don't meet the direct admission standards for the Kelley School of Business to still have a shot at getting in.

When you apply to IU and select Kelley as your first choice, you'll be either directly admitted if you meet their criteria or placed into the pre-business program if you don't. As a pre-business student, you'll need to complete certain prerequisites during your freshman year, including maintaining a specific GPA and taking some required courses.

Once you've fulfilled those requirements, you can petition for admission into the Kelley School of Business. This typically happens at the end of your freshman year, and you'll need to fill out the petition form provided by Kelley.

The decision on your petition will consider your academic performance at IU, the courses you've taken, as well as any other accomplishments you've achieved during your freshman year. So, the petition process is basically a second chance for students who didn't initially meet direct admission standards. Good luck!

How to Improve Your Chances of Getting Into Kelley School of Business

If Kelley sounds like the place for you, then you’ll need to put together a stellar application! Here are some tips on how to get into the Kelley School of Business. Learn how to make yourself stand out to the admissions committee and fit the mold of what they’re looking for!

Showcase Your Collaborative Spirit

To win over Kelley’s admissions committee, applicants should demonstrate their commitment to teamwork and comfort in collaborative settings. Essential components of the MBA program are Student Treks. Like-minded students organize cross-country road trips paved with back-to-back visits to companies whose working culture intrigues them. The landmarks on the itinerary vary based on the interests of students:

“Students interested in the tech industry might head to Silicon Valley to visit Google, Shutterfly and Samsung or Seattle to visit Amazon and Microsoft, while those focused on finance might plan a trek to New York to meet with executives at Bank of America—the goal is the same: to explore new opportunities, companies and careers for a future that best matches the individual.”

Since these trips are student-led, the admissions committee will seek applicants who can demonstrate a similar sense of initiative that feeds from others’ input.

Find a Binding Thread to Your Experiences

Kelley also seeks applicants who know themselves and can boil down their range of experiences according to simple guiding principles. The admissions committee expects applicants to pitch themselves, like the succinct pitch of a good business idea too, through their resume or admissions essays.

Kelley’s famous Me, Inc. program aims to train students along these self-reflective lines to help you “develop an in-depth understanding of yourself—your personal brand and how to connect your past experiences to your future goals in a way that resonates with employers.”

The admissions committee is more likely to admit applicants with a promise to flourish in the Me, Inc. program. Kelley hopefuls are therefore advised to work on self-reflective exercises and draw the common denominators behind their academic and professional experiences prior to completing their applications.

Show an Interest in Social Good

Kelley’s MBA curriculum is also valued for its promotion of social good, and admitted students are expected to contribute to the university’s outreach and community work in Bloomington, Indiana. Several programs require the sympathy and zeal of engaged citizens.

Included among its experiential learning components is 1Kelley Consulting , in which students use their business insights to “work with local businesses owned by women and underrepresented minorities, or organizations that empower these groups.”

Kelley also offers a Certificate in Social Entrepreneurship, where students use their “business know-how to work solving global problems—from building clean water supplies to improving opportunities in emerging economies.”

Given the level of social engagement inherent to the MBA program, the acceptance rate is likely higher for applicants who already demonstrate a similar commitment to social good.

Insert Your Business Ethos Within a Global Context

Kelley strives to be a global institution, and it expects its students to adopt the full range of its cultural and geographical horizon. Included among its international programs is GLOBASE , an initiative that “sits at the challenging, exciting intersection between business and global development in Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia.”

Long before the pandemic began, GLOBASE inserted students in a series of research-based remote work with foreign clients, followed by a week-long trip to their respective sites abroad. Kelley also has existing partnerships with ESSEC Business School in Paris and the National University of Singapore Business School.

Given its international programming, applicants should tailor their application to reflect our increasingly globalized world.

Kelley Business School Essay Prompts

Your MBA essays are a significant part of your application to Kelley. They will provide the admissions committee with insight into your personality, background, and opinions and will help them get to know you better on a personal level.

Applicants are encouraged to be honest, informative, creative, and concise. Remember to be genuine as you write and to tell your authentic story!

Here are the required essay prompts for Kelley’s MBA program:

Note that not every applicant will receive an interview invitation, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t receive one. You may receive an invitation at any point in the application process until shortly before decisions are released.

FAQs: How to Get Into the Kelley School of Business

1. my undergraduate degree was not in business. can i apply to kelley’s mba program.

Absolutely. Kelley’s MBA program does not require a bachelor’s degree in business for admission, so you can apply with any degree. In fact, among the Class of 2025 , 24% will come from humanities or social science backgrounds.

2. Can I pursue the MBA online regardless of changing pandemic restrictions?

Even before the pandemic, the Kelley School of Business provided its students with the freedom to pursue a fully online MBA program. That said, it has a different application procedure than the residential MBA.

3. I was told that Kelley’s MBA program is STEM-focused. I like STEM, but too much of it worries me. Will someone without a strong scientific foundation do well in the program?

Though Kelley’s MBA program expects all their students to navigate numbers and charts in scientific ways, their major in management is the only one that is not STEM-designated. Students who prefer more qualitative sides to business can opt for management as their primary major.

4. I am both interested in finance and marketing. Can I double major?

Absolutely; double majoring is very plausible at Kelley. After completing their chosen major’s required coursework, students are left with enough credits to work toward a second major as well as a few electives.

5. I have been working full-time for a while. I am worried too much classroom time could affect the good working habits I have developed over the years. Will the program expose me to hands-on work?

Yes. Hands-on work is an essential element of Kelley’s MBA program. Their special experiential program, Bloomington Brands , recreates a regular work environment and provides a chance to “manage the marketing activities for a nationally distributed product while still a student.”

6. I don’t have too much working experience (< 2 years). Will Kelley value the volunteer and community work I also did?

Although it’s an important aspect of your application, there is no set requirement for work experience, and volunteer and community work is also very important at Kelley Business School!

Kelley’s admissions committee is especially eager to hear from engaged citizens. The business school even has a Washington Campus where students get to “meet face-to-face with policymakers, explore how regulatory changes really get made and see how those changes affect both corporate and nonprofit organizations.”

Students with impressive community work are encouraged to link them to such programs.

7. Is it OK if I took the GMAT twice?

Yes, taking the GMAT twice is not a problem in your application to Kelley Business School. Luckily, Kelley’s admissions committee is happy to consider an applicant’s best scores.

8. Who should write my letter of recommendation?

Because Kelley is most interested in its applicants’ professional experiences, your recommendation letter should ideally be written by a recent or current job supervisor.

Conclusion

Though learning how to get into the Kelley School of Business can be difficult, prospective students are encouraged to give a shot to a university known for its flexibility and sense of innovation.

Recent Kelley alumni, Max Brickman, was named to the Forbes Under 30 List for 2022. With subsequent lists likely to include more Kelley graduates, prospective students should place Indiana on their radar and start preparing an application for their valuable MBA program.

IU Kelley Petition Tracker 2023

Hi there, waiting for my daugter to get her ID/log in for IU, she applied last week (said it could be 5 business days). She’s got 31 ACT and 3.7 GPA, so she wants to petition for Kelley.

What are the exact prompts that you have to answer to do this? I saw something about “what is your greatest achievement” and then a 2nd one - if there is anything else that they should know that affected her chances, etc.

Is this acccurate?

Please repost this question for the class of 2024 in the IU Kelley Petition Tracker 2024 (this thread is for last year’s class). Thank you!

Prompt #1 - What has been your most significant achievement in the last three years? Prompt #2 - Please discuss how your lived experience impacts your unique ability to contribute to the Kelley School of Business. OR What is an issue that captivates you? How will you use a Kelley School of Business education to solve a problem related to this issue?

All in under 250 words. There is also “Please inform us of other circumstances of which we should be aware as we consider your request. This is not a space for another or continuation of your answers above. (optional)”

An AMA a few posts down from this one states that there are 70+ students on waitlists for 30-40 credits…being told they may have to become part-time students. Can anyone confirm this?

Please post this in the 2024 petition tracker here:

Hello! Is it possible to change to ‘Test Optional’ after applying with Test Scores? If yes, would it help for someone with average test scores for Kelley Business School?

Yes. You will have to petition for acceptance to Kelley which is what this thread was about.

Amid layoffs and budget problems, UW Oshkosh faculty vote no confidence in Chancellor Andrew Leavitt

Uw system leaders pledged their 'full support' of the chancellor after the results of the no-confidence vote were released..

kelley school of business petition essay

OSHKOSH — University of Wisconsin Oshkosh faculty voted no-confidence in their chancellor, sending a symbolic message of disapproval during a difficult budget year.

About 72% of responding faculty, or 164 professors, said they lacked confidence in Chancellor Andrew Leavitt 's leadership. Sixty-five faculty, or 28%, voted in support of him. Of the university's 281 faculty, 229 participated in the referendum, according to results shared Friday.

Leavitt said the results were "a reaction to hard but necessary decisions I have made as Chancellor." He said the university has faced challenges head-on by reducing an $18 million budget hole to $3 million and closing the remaining deficit by redesigning UW-Oshkosh's academic structure.

"Stakeholders recognize our difficult decisions and are rooting for us in our work to build a more sustainable UWO," he said in a statement. "We remain on a responsible path, and I appreciate everyone's continued stewardship."

Faculty have no power to fire chancellor

Only the UW Board of Regents have the power to fire a chancellor but no-confidence votes can draw public attention to perceived mismanagement.

A no-confidence vote can also lay the groundwork for a leaders' exit. A 2022 analysis by the Chronicle of Higher Education  found that about half the time a college president is on the receiving end of a vote, they leave office within a year. A separate Chronicleanalysis last year found  13% of presidential resignations in the past five years were linked to a no-confidence vote.

Board leaders on Friday indicated satisfaction with Leavitt's performance.

"Chancellor Andy Leavitt has our full support," Board President Karen Walsh, Board Vice President Amy Bogost and UW System President Jay Rothman said in a statement. "He is leading UW Oshkosh through a series of difficult but necessary decisions to position the university for a sustainable future. With a focus on current and future students, Chancellor Leavitt is thinking creatively about the university’s academic and building infrastructure."

Over the past year, UW Oshkosh has laid off more than 200 staff and imposed furloughs to help close an $18 million deficit . The university will close UW Oshkosh Fond du Lac , one of its two branch campuses, at the end of the school year.

UW budget deal: Inside University of Wisconsin's budget deal: Pressure, predictions and last-minute maneuvering

Paul Van Auken, a sociology professor, said faculty didn't want to take such a drastic measure but were left with no choice. He encouraged UW leaders to talk to community members in the wake of the referendum.

"It’s clear what the faculty thinks, so go beyond (us) and talk to people in the region who care about UW Oshkosh — alums, business leaders, students," he said. "And if they do, they will likely see it’s time for new leadership."

Petition launched no-confidence vote

A faculty petition that initiated the vote cast an unflattering portrait of Leavitt's leadership. Professors said the chancellor failed to address potential enrollment declines, disregarded collaborating with campus community members, relied on a consulting firm to determine layoffs and maintained a “top-down, opaque management style."

In a more than 4,000 word response , Leavitt disputed the petition's claims. He blamed the university's financial struggles on a "perfect storm" of circumstances beyond his control, including demographic trends, shifting perceptions about the value of a college degree, a decade-long tuition freeze and inherited legal trouble related to the university's private foundation.

Student newspaper editorial also criticizes Leavitt’s leadership

The no-confidence vote came a day after the university's student newspaper, the Advance-Titan , slammed Leavitt in an editorial featuring a missing person poster . The opinion piece called Leavitt’s leadership and availability into question.

Diversity restructuring: UW Oshkosh chancellor says Universities of Wisconsin system didn't sell out students of color for $800M

"There’s just a lack of empathy coming from the administration, so it’s just frustrating not to see the chancellor, who is supposed to be in charge and running the university, face these issues and appear to be running away from them,” Editor-In-Chief Anya Kelley told the Oshkosh Northwestern .

Leavitt's chief of staff, Alex Hummel, pushed back against the editorial and its characterization of Leavitt missing from campus. Hummel cited several student events where the chancellor recently attended.
