General Admission Requirements

Admission to the Online program is competitive and evaluation is based on the student's academic and professional records of achievement.

To be considered for admission, students must meet the following requirements:

• A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the U.S. or an international equivalent
• The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or IELTS, is required for international applicants who have not studied in English-speaking countries. John Jay College’s TOEFL code number is 2115-99. The minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 550 for the paper-based test, 213 for the computer-based test, and 79-80 for the Internet-based test. The minimum score for IELTS is 7.

An undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher (or meet contingency requirements as determined by the program on a case-by-case basis)

Program Specific Application Processes

Advanced certificate in criminal investigation.

Before enrolling into the Advanced Certificate in Criminal Investigation program, applicants must first meet the following requirements:

• An undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution
• 3 letters of recommendation
• Personal Statement

Advanced Certificate in Emergency Management Studies

Certificate Program Requirements

• An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution
• Satisfactory letters of reference

Note: Currently enrolled John Jay College graduate students are eligible to take courses toward the Advanced Certificate in Emergency Management Studies (on-campus or online).

Advanced Certificate in Terrorism Studies

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Admission to the online Advanced Certificate in Terrorism Studies program is competitive, and evaluation is based on the student’s academic and professional records of achievement. 

• An undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher (or meet contingency requirements as determined by the program on a case-by-case basis)
• Submission of a complete application (see Application Process below)

Advanced Certificate in Transnational Organized Crime Studies

Admission to the online Advanced Certificate in Transnational Organized Crime Studies program is competitive, and evaluation is based on the student’s academic and professional records of achievement. 

• Submission of a complete application
• 2 Letters if Recommendation

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice

• One class in undergraduate statistics is required, though students may be accepted on the condition that this requirement is met within the first year of the program. Accepted grades for the undergraduate statistics course is of a B or higher.

Master of Arts in Human Rights

Master of arts in international crime and justice.

The Master of Arts Online Program in International Crime and Justice welcomes applicants who have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited post-secondary institution, or international equivalent, with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. In addition, applicants should have successfully completed an undergraduate statistics course. Students may be conditionally admitted without undergraduate statistics but must complete this course within the first year of the program. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required.

Applicants are asked to submit:

• Official transcripts of undergraduate and other graduate coursework
• Three letters of recommendation
• A personal statement of approximately 500 words giving reasons for wanting to pursue graduate study
• Students are required to submit a writing sample from a question prompt in the application (3 page essay or 1,500 words including references)

Master of Public Administration: Public Policy and Administration

Admission to the online Masters of Public Administration program is competitive, and evaluation is based on the student’s academic and professional records of achievement. 

Master of Science in Emergency Management

Admission Requirements

Admission to the online Master of Science in Emergency Management program is competitive, and evaluation is based on the student's academic and professional records of achievements. Although students are not required to have an undergraduate degree or prior coursework in emergency management, preference will be given to those with relevant experience.

• A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the U.S. or an international equivalent
• An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher ( or meet contingency requirements as determined by the program on a case-by-case basis)

Application Process

Applications for admissions may be submitted online using the Online Application System. Applicants need to create an account before beginning the application process. A dedicated Enrollment Advisor for the program is available to walk applicants through the application process, in coordination with the program faculty and the Office of Admissions at John Jay College.

The following items must be submitted for a completed application:

• A nonrefundable application fee of $125 USD, in check or money order, made payable to John Jay College
• Official transcripts from all previously attended colleges or universities 
• Two academic letters of recommendation
• A personal statement of approximately 500 words about your interest in the program and career goals

Master of Science in Security Management

Comprehensive Examination

All students in the program must pass a Comprehensive Exam that measures knowledge essential to security management and is administered by the program. The exam is offered every six months. The Program Director will issue a list of readings and texts at least 30 days before the administration of each Exam. Students must complete 24 credits in the program in order to be eligible to complete the exam. Students who fail the exam have two additional opportunities to retake it, in accordance with normal academic calendar.

Enrollment Advisement

John Jay Online students are provided with three basic tiers of advisement:

• Enrollment Advising
• Student Services/Support Advising
• Academic Advising

When you expresses interest in one of our programs, an Enrollment Advisor (EA) will contact you.

• Your Enrollment Advisor whether your professional, academic and personal goals align with the programs offered.
• Your Enrollment Advisor will introduce and explain the programs, application process, and decision process and refers them to other departments as needed.
• You can make an appointment with your Enrollment Advisor to fill out the application together.

Once the application is submitted and you have received a decision, the Student Support Advisement takes over. John Jay Online provides student services similar to what Jay Express provides for campus students. Through John Jay Online, students connect to the administrative departments of John Jay College: Admissions, Registrar, Blackboard, Bursar and financial aid, and are guided through the student processes such as registration, orientation, drop/add, defer, graduation etc. For our online students, John Jay Online Student Service Specialists provide a one-stop to help students navigate the administrative functions and educational transactions from contact to graduation.

Appealing your Admission Decision

Students denied admission can submit an appeal to the Admission Appeals Committee for reconsideration of the original admission decision.

Students must present new and compelling evidence as to why they are a good candidate for John Jay and not simply repeat information that was presented in the application.  Students are advised to accept a seat at a college that has already offered them admission while their appeal is under review.

Students who have attended another accredited college or university may transfer to John Jay College. Applications must be made to The City University of New York (CUNY) through the University’s Application Processing Center (UAPC). The application is available online at: https://www.cuny.edu/admissions/undergraduate/apply/cuny-application/ .

Students who have earned at least 24 credits and have a 2.0 GPA on a scale of 4.0 will be evaluated based on their college credentials. Students with fewer than 24 credits will be evaluated based on their high school record in conjunction with their college credentials.

Students should apply by September 15 for spring admission, and by February 1 for fall admission.

In addition to completing the application, students must provide the following:

• Transcripts from all previous colleges attended
• All official high school transcripts
• If the student is a GED holder, photocopies of the GED scores and diploma must be sent to UAPC along with all high school transcripts 

International students must also provide the following:

•  Photocopies of secondary school documents/transcripts, mark sheets and/or diploma

•  Translations of all foreign-language documents

•  A copy of the TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo if applicable

All courses completed at accredited institutions will be accepted for transfer at John Jay.  Students will be given credit for courses in which they earned grades of C or better and for courses taken at CUNY colleges in which they earned any passing grade. 

Up to 45 credits from external, non-college sources, such as law enforcement or fire academies, military, or standardized tests. (See  Credit for Prior Learning )

All courses completed at an accredited institution will be accepted for transfer at John Jay.  Students will be given credit for courses in which they earned grades of C or better. For courses taken at CUNY colleges, students will be given credit for courses in which they earned grade of D- or better.

The John Jay College Now (CN) program is designed to meet high school students' diverse academic needs and interests. Admission requirements vary depending on the course or activity. Students should have a good high school attendance record to in the program .  Please note that only students who attend NYC public high schools, are registered homeschooled students, or are students with disabilities and whose private school tuition is supported by the DOE can participate in College Now ( See FAQs ).
