Instructions [ ]

Please add jobs in the following format and order them alphabetically by the name of the institution.

  • Example University. Position Title. Specializations. Deadline. TT/NT. FT/PT. Link to Job ad(s).

TT/NT: Tenure-track or Non-tenure track.

FT/PT: Full-Time or Part-Time

Add updates to the end of each entry as they come in: Additional materials requested, video interview scheduled, campus visit scheduled, offer extended, offer accepted, rejection received.

Please post "Have you heard?" questions below, under Word on the Street .

some discussion about this section... [ ]

This section is creepy and none of the other job wikis have it. Try to be normal, please.

Of course it is helpful to know who got the job, and anyone curious enough could easily paste it together from faculty lists. But that takes time, and isn't it nice that we have this community to help cut through the busywork. Like how Clifford Garstang does the service of ranking all the creative writing prize anthologies. The point of this wiki is to consolidate all such information in order to help those on the job market, so please welcome this as part of such an effort. R1: The job market is a Calvinist affair, no amount of knowledge is going to move you from condemned to elect.

I don't know why this section would be creepy, but I have always found it very useful to see who is getting hired. (x12) (It also never posts anything that is not public information! Info is added on here after being announced by the person on their socials or through their universities with their full knowledge. Pretty normal!)

See the section below on "Who previously held this job?" Any of that kind of information is useful for prospective candidates, and it's all publicly available.

Information from people's social media accounts does not necessarily mean it's "publicly available."

It’s pretty clear that people are referring to public social media accounts when describing information within that is “publicly available.” To clarify, when setting up an account, the user always has an option to make it “private” or “public.” If they indeed select the latter, then all information shared through the account is indeed available to the public, which is where we’re getting the term “publicly available.” Hope that helps. Good luck.

^"MFA draft" energy

This section used to be helpful in a Seinfeld who's-getting-the-apartment sort of way--that is, knowing who got the jobs would help job seekers figure out which positions those folks were leaving and thus what jobs would become available the next year. Now, with many if not most CW positions either not being refilled, being converted to non-t-t positions, or being reconfigured to combine multiple positions into one, it doesn't really serve that purpose. It was worth reading these comments to learn that somewhere there's a human named Clifford quantifying lit mags tho.

Some of the other job wikis have a section for people to list (anonymously) salary and negotiation, usually with vague identifying details like region and type of uni. Seems much more useful but unlikely to be used here if folks are also keeping a handy list of where everyone ended up that could be easily cross listed.

It's like you're not even trying to be normal. (<--- PLEASE get a new hobby and stop wasting everyone's time with this!!!!!!!!!! x2)

Nope! ;-)

My hobby is being normal and getting a TT job. You should try it (<--Sorry for your loneliness but there are other spaces for you to express that more directly. This is what this form is and no one is forcing you to be here.) R1: I actually am being forced to be here, Karen Kelsky kidnapped my daughter and she only gets to eat if I make rude posts on the jobs wiki.

If you don't find this info helpful, why not simply log off, since it seems like the general consensus is that we all find it helpful? Wish you the best!

WORD ON THE STREET [ ]

10/26: Anyone heard anything from the Naval Academy?

I received a request for secondary materials today (11/9/23)

From LMU or from the Naval Academy??

Apologies, from Naval Academy!

11/7: Anyone heard anything from Loyola Marymount? | 11/28: Got the rejection today.

11/13: Anyone hear anything from Bowdoin (CNF) or Florida Atlantic? | 11/28: FAU asked for more materials a week ago

I got an email from Bowdoin asking me to confirm my interest, since the position is Asst. level and I'm currently an Associate.

Bowdoin first round interviews happened in December. Any word on on-campus interviews?

11/14: Anyone hear anything from Princeton?

11/15: Does anyone have any info about Hope College? It seems like this job is posted every year or two. Does it keep going unfilled, or do they have trouble hanging onto people due to the religious aspects of the school? 11/28: curious about this too! 12/31: I was curious as well and did a bit of digging. I found two articles. One: https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2019/02/06/division-investigations-faculty-departures%E2%80%A6-what-going-hope-colleges-music and: https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2016/04/18/hope-college-moves-away-immediate-plan-fire-president To me, these articles point to some instability that would make it difficult to work there (for me, anyway, which is why I didn't apply). I also found student review comments on some websites that said that, although chapel attendance isn't mandatory for students, it is frowned upon and makes students who don't go feel isolated--I would think it would be the same for faculty members? But that's me just speculating based on those student comments.

11/15: Anyone hear anything from Reed yet besides that email in October outlining timeline?

First round interviews were scheduled for mid-December.

11/19 Received request for more materials from UVM on 10/23. Any word on interviews?

11/20 Any word from Smith?

12/3: Any word from UC Davis?

12/23 seems like Zoom interviews went out/happened but no word on campus visits

12/3: Any word from UMass Amherst (besides the 11/12 rejection)?

12/11: Any word from Le Moyne, Franklin and Marshall, Trinity?

12/13: Anyone apply to UATX? Or hear from them? Review of apps began 11/15.

1/9: Can anyone confirm if Zoom interview requests from USF went out only for the Poetry position or also for Open Genre?

1/10: Any new info from Colorado College, other than the job listing mirroring the bio of the current visiting professor who’s also the partner of a current faculty member?

1/18: Anyone heard anything from CC (poetry)? 1/19: See below about posting matching qualifications/experience of the current visiting poet/partner of current faculty.

1/19 meaning it's likely an internal hire...?

2/15: I reached out to Colorado College's Human Resources department, twice now, 3 weeks ago and 1 week ago, inquiring about the status of the search: no response at all.

2/16....I also have not heard anything from CC....has anyone reached out to anyone involved in the search? i.e. the chair?

3/29: wow! The initial presumption on Colorado College was correct. The VAP is listed on 2024-2025 courses as of today. (Though technically no info on whether as a continuing VAP or in the TT role)

1/24: I have a Q, it's my first time on the market and I've noticed that I've applied to some places where people have gotten both interviews and form rejections. If I haven't gotten the rejection, is this just sloppy responding on their parts? or when doing these searches do schools tend to have some sort of second tier that they keep on the back burner in case all interviews don't go well? Curious if anyone knows. Answer: First, congrats on getting interviews your first round! Hoping you get a good place to work. And, honestly, it's hard to say. Sometimes HR is gumming up the works (I've gotten a form rejection over a year after an interview). Or they don't seem to want to reject anyone until they have the new hire secured—ostensibly hedging their bets? Or, again, HR protocol. But yes indeed could also be sloppy af. Flyouts and no rejection, etc, happens all the time. Takeaway: after a certain amount of time you should feel free to email and ask for an update. (Disclaimer: I have not been on a hiring committee, so take this with a grain of salt.) R2: It's likely just an oversight. Most schools are interviewing 9-20 people for the job, then inviting 3-4 to campus. If you get an interview and don't hear from them, you could be in a reserve pool of semi-finalists in case none of the finalists work out--that's very common. But if you didn't get an interview around when some of the other requests were made (not every school extends all interview requests on the same day, but they're generally pretty close together), your application is likely dead. This might mean that you were very close to being an interviewee and didn't get rejected in the first batch but also weren't advanced, or it could just be an HR glitch--I've seen the other side of these searches and some of the software interfaces are just dreadful.

1/25 - any word on campus visits at Smith, UH-Manoa, or SUNY Purchase?

2/14-Any word on campus visits at Franklin Marshall College? Any word from Binghamton?

2/20-CUNY Baruch Q: did the campus visit go ahead? Last I heard from them they said the process was delayed.

3/08 - Any news from Emerson College? It's been over a month since job talks/campus visits, has anyone heard of an offer being made? Or of people who weren't originally given job talks being flown out?

3/08: Any news from Texas Tech (Costa Rica)?

3/8: Any news from The University of Tampa? Campus visit, notified 3/12

3/13: Any news from Antioch?

3/23: A technical question on the process: When you already hold a TT position but would like to re-enter the market because you're not happy with your current job & town, how do you guys go about collecting reference letters? Do you ask your current colleagues and faculty, or go back to your PhD/MA mentors? Thanks! A: I got one from a colleague at my current job; I was told from folks who have been on hiring committees that it would look good (I went with a trusted friend/colleague, not my Dean or others because I didn't want them to know I was trying to leave). The other letters were from former professors/mentors and one person with whom I went to graduate school with who teaches at a different school--I was also told by people who served on committees that it looks better to have your letters from people at different schools (if you've had the same job for a time). I hope this helps! I should add: I think it helps in the cover letter to write about why you want to leave the current school as related to a positive you find in the school you're applying for; in other words, never say or hint at anything negative about the current place.

3/25: Colorado College sent rejection, noting that "other candidates [who]...more closely matched the College's needs were selected for interviews and an offer was made." Curious to see if the offer was made to the current visiting prof who is a partner of a current full-time faculty. I mean, no problem really--but why make people go through al the hoops of applying, interviewing, traveling, etc., when you want to hire the person already there? If their hands are tied because of policy or law, I get it, but it's dumb. Spare us the waiting and the effort.

From Matt Bell, here’s what a successful academic cover letter for creative writers looks like.

Corinne Segal

Today in things that are incredibly helpful: Matt Bell, author of the novel Appleseed  and writing guide  Refuse to Be Done , shared, over Twitter, an example of a cover letter for creative writers looking for academic jobs. The letter he shared was one he wrote to apply to Arizona State University, where he’s an associate professor of fiction in the creative writing program.

Along with providing some disclaimers—including that the materials he shared are “undeniably imperfect & also aging”—Bell noted that “One organizational tactic I used was mimicking the 40% research, 40% teaching, 20% service split of the typical academic appointment: I go through the categories in order, in roughly those proportions.”

As writing cover letters is often pretty difficult, this is concrete, practical advice of a particularly generous variety. Here is the original Tweet, and the full text of the letter:

A friend recently asked for examples of academic cover letters for creative writers: I share my materials with anyone who asks, with the disclaimer that they’re undeniably imperfect & also aging, since I started my job in 2014. This is the cover letter I used to apply for it. 1/ pic.twitter.com/fezuA4kwSw — Matt Bell (@mdbell79) March 15, 2022

Arts Initiative Announces 2024 Creative Careers Residents

Jessica Jenks

creative writing academic jobs 2024

The University of Michigan Arts Initiative has announced three master’s degree-level residents for its Creative Careers Residency, a transitional program providing support for full-time, self-directed creative practice in architecture and urban planning, art and design, performing arts, intermedia arts or creative writing.

Upon graduation, many practitioners lose their networks of support necessary to develop significant work, posing a significant barrier to the transition from degree to sustained work. Maintaining a creative practice takes focus and time, and taking on a full-time job often leaves little of both.

The Creative Careers Residency seeks to reduce these barriers by providing the time, structure and funding support to transition from academia to post-graduate endeavors. Residents receive a $40,000 work stipend, health insurance, among other benefits.

The goals of the program are to:

  • Provide the necessary structure for academic disciplines to transition from “graduate student” to “creative professional.”
  • Set up U-M graduates of creative disciplines for success in a deep creative practice by providing a necessary support infrastructure.
  • Reduce barriers for artists to develop sustainable careers as artists by providing reliable income and health insurance.
  • Increase the presence and interactions of artists-in-residence across campus.

The Arts Initiative is leading the way in this kind of institutional support for graduates in the arts. The Creative Careers Residency enables student-artists to create a significant project that will bridge the gap to the next art-making opportunity.

The 2023-24 Creative Careers Residents are:

  • Kara Roseborough, Master of Fine Arts in Dance ‘24, School of Music, Theatre & Dance
  • Leah Crosby, Master of Fine Art ‘24, Stamps School of Art & Design
  • Sara Faraj, Master of Urban and Regional Planning ‘24, Taubman College

Project Descriptions

  • Kara Roseborough, SMTD Dance will develop a Motown ballet ‘La Vie en Rose,’ which chronicles the journey of a small-town Black waitress with dreams of dancing in New York City. The piece examines issues of race and gender as they pertain to an artist’s journey and incorporate the history of Black people in southeast Michigan. In collaborating with local musicians, Roseborough will reconfigure the work to be set entirely to new and existing Motown-inspired songs to situate the ballet further within the local Black community.
  • Leah Crosby, Stamps will create a serialized experimental audio work and accompanying chapbook or zine that draws on research on identity co-formation within caregiving relationships. The audio will be released serially via WBCN, Ann Arbor’s community radio station, culminating in a final live performance of the entire audio series at the Ann Arbor District Library, where the companion chapbook will be distributed. The remaining chapbooks will be distributed in vintage vending machines installed on campus.
  • Sara Faraj, Taubman College will facilitate Photovoice workshops for marginalized individuals, groups, and organizations, which include photography training, ethical considerations of photography, direction, and narrative development through reflection and collaborative activities. Participants will develop “voices” accompanying their images to shed light on their photographs and stories. The project includes workshops, a report outlining the methodology and research findings, and a public exhibit showcasing the power of Photovoice.”

Description

This writing workshop is for scholars of religion and theology who have written exclusively or primarily in the scholarly genre for other scholars of religion but long to share their knowledge or personal experience in a more creative way with a wider audience. Many scholars yearn to speak to a broader audience through creative nonfiction, blogs, op-eds, and memoir. Many scholars want to write with more clarity and imagination. Participants in this workshop will develop their writing voice in service to topics they care about, and for which they have passion and curiosity. A combination of plenary, small group and individual instruction, our week together will help scholars free the creative spirit, structure their writing more effectively, and speak on the page in a truer, more engaging voice. Our focus will be on releasing the professors’ voice to the public square, giving permission to be imaginative, and finding new ways of being inspired.

No previous experience publishing in creative writing genres is needed.

Workshop Goals

  • To create a collaborative learning cohort of teacher-scholars to expand and deepen scholarly writing
  • To navigate the intersecting challenges of creative writing as an academic
  • To develop new practices of creative writing in the service of teaching and scholarship of religion and theology
  • To explore strategies for the authentic voice while thriving in institutional, political and personal contexts
  • To write and receive feedback while also being in conversation with other creative writers

  • Tenure track, continuing term, and/or full-time contingency teaching full time in college, university, or seminary
  • Must be teaching in religion and theology or related fields
  • Job description or contract that is wholly or primarily inclusive of teaching
  • Teaching in accredited college, university, seminary in the United States, Puerto Rico or Canada
  • Personal commitment to participate fully in workshop with 100% attendance in all sessions

German university rescinds Jewish American’s job offer over pro-Palestinian letter

Nancy Fraser, professor of philosophy at the New School, condemned killings in Gaza carried out by the Israeli military

A leading Jewish American philosopher has been disinvited from taking up a prestigious professorship at the University of Cologne after signing a letter expressing solidarity with Palestinians and condemning the killings in Gaza carried out by Israeli forces.

Nancy Fraser, professor of philosophy and politics at the New School for Social Research in New York, said she had been cancelled by the university, which has withdrawn its invitation to the Albertus Magnus Professorship 2024, a visiting position, which she had been awarded in 2022. The letter was written in November 2023 following the 7 October attacks on Israel by Hamas, prompting Israel’s attack on Gaza.

Fellow academics have written a letter to the university in protest against the ban. In it, they call the withdrawal of the invitation “another attempt to limit public and academic debate on Israel and Palestine by invoking supposedly clear, distinct, governmentally sanctioned red lines”.

They said the letter, titled Philosophy for Palestine, which was signed by Fraser and several hundred other academics, was separate from Fraser’s work as a scholar and that her guest professorship had nothing to do with the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Cologne University said in a statement its decision to cancel the invitation had been made “with great regret”. It said the reason was that in the letter signed by Fraser, “Israel’s right to exist as an ‘ethno-supremacist state’ since its foundation in 1948 is called into question. The terror attacks by Hamas on Israel of 7 October 2023 is [sic] elevated to an act of legitimate resistance.”

It said that the signatories’ demand for the academic and cultural boycott of Israeli institutions was at odds with the university’s close ties to Israeli partner institutions and the views in the letter were not in line with its own statements from October 2022 on the situation in the Middle East region.

In an interview with the Frankfurter Rundschau , Fraser called herself a victim of “philosemitic McCarthyism” alongside a number of other academics such as Masha Gessen who have been cancelled in Germany over their views regarding the Middle East conflict amid growing criticism that a dominating pro-Israel political consensus has shut down any proper debate .

“After all, I was canceled in the name of German responsibility for the Holocaust. This responsibility should also apply to Jewish people. But in Germany it is narrowed down to the state policy of the currently ruling Israeli government. Philosemitic McCarthyism sums it up quite well. A way to silence people under the pretext of supposedly supporting Jews,” Fraser said.

In an interview with Die Zeit addressing the issue of Germany’s responsibility as perpetrator of the Holocaust for protecting Jewish life, Fraser said this duty was being wrongly applied to exclude criticism of the Israeli government.

“I completely agree that Germans have a special responsibility towards the Jews in light of the Holocaust. But to equate criticism of the Israeli government with antisemitism is simply wrong. And may I add that as a Jew I also feel a special responsibility. But … that doesn’t mean giving this government carte blanche. What is happening in Gaza should not happen – and especially not in my name. I strongly reject the equation of Israel and Judaism. Judaism has a rich secular and, above all, universalist tradition. It pains me when it is reduced to Israel’s current hyper-ethno-nationalist politics.”

Asked why she thought the philosopher Judith Butler had been allowed to assume the same professorship in 2016, despite having been highly critical of Israel, Fraser said: “In Germany, the panic of doing something wrong has increased. In addition the war in Gaza is now rekindling the feverishness.”

Fraser has said she will continue to hold the lectures she had planned to deliver in Cologne, both at the New School and at another location in Germany.

after newsletter promotion

“It has been suggested that I give the lectures elsewhere in Germany under the slogan: ‘This is what you weren’t allowed to hear in Cologne’.”

In a letter to Joybrato Mukherjee the rector of Cologne University, the interim president of the New School, Donna E Shalala, described his decision as “simply outrageous”, and “insulting”, and asked him to reconsider. She commented that Albertus Magnus, the 13th-century free-thinking philosopher, scientist and bishop after whom the professorship is named, “would have been appalled”.

In the 1930s, the New School, she pointed out, had “rescued intellectuals seeking refuge from the Nazis” – including the political theorist Hannah Arendt, the psychologist Erich Fromm and the composer Hanns Eisler.

“We continued the body of critical thought that had been wiped out – promoting the remarkable traditions of the German academy,” she wrote.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

creative writing academic jobs 2024

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

An Overview of the IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to measure English proficiency for educational, vocational and immigration purposes. The IELTS measures an individual's ability to communicate in English across four areas of language: listening , reading , writing and speaking . The IELTS is administered jointly by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment at over 1,100 test centres and 140 countries. These test centres supervise the local administration of the test and recruit, train and monitor IELTS examiners.

IELTS tests are available on 48 fixed dates each year, usually Saturdays and sometimes Thursdays, and may be offered up to four times a month at any test centre, including Elektrostal' depending on local needs. Go to IELTS test locations to find a test centre in or nearby Elektrostal' and to check for upcoming test dates at your test centre.

Test results are available online 13 days after your test date. You can either receive your Test Report Form by post or collect it from the Test Centre. You will normally only receive one copy of the Test Report Form, though you may ask for a second copy if you are applying to the UK or Canada for immigration purposes - be sure to specify this when you register for IELTS. You may ask for up to 5 copies of your Test Report Form to be sent directly to other organisations, such as universities.

There are no restrictions on re-sitting the IELTS. However, you would need to allow sufficient time to complete the registration procedures again and find a suitable test date.
