Further things to consider when writing application letters to schools

Further things to consider when writing application letters to schools

Application Letters

Application letters are letters that you write to formally request for something from authority, apply for a job, or join an institution. Effective application letters will give a detailed explanation for your interest in the specific item, company, or institution. They showcase your abilities and strengths and illustrate your experience. In most cases, people write application letters to express their interest in receiving a position, attending an institution, or when applying for a visa, for instance. In all scenarios, application letters must be accompanied by the relevant documents. Application letters are the perfect tool to demonstrate something of your personality. Therefore, you should write in a professional tone setting a clear outline that allows the reader to scan the primary data quickly. Introduce yourself and briefly explain your intent and reason for the application. Address the letter with a title or name of the recipient. If your application is for a job or to join an institution, for example, you need to highlight your experience and qualification; if you are applying for a travel visa, make sure to state a clear intention for your travel. End with a positive tone and invite the recipient to contact you.

Letters to Schools

Letters to schools are letters written to institutions designed to provide learning environment and spaces to pupils and students. There are many times when you may feel the need to write to a school administration. Maybe you want to recommend a student or employee or want to apply for an academic program. Perhaps your child has a disability, and you want to make sure that he/she is receiving special education services. Whatever the issue, putting your thoughts in writing avoids confusion since it provides you and the recipient with a record of your request. It is, therefore, crucial to keep a copy of any letter you send. All letters to schools must use the standard business letter style. Start your letter with the proper address and salutation. Introduce yourself and explain the reason for your letter clearly and concisely. Depending on the content of your letter, provide any documentation that gives the recipient reference to the case or clarifies your concerns. Keep the tone polite, respectful, and professional. Close by thanking the recipient for his/her time and with a note of anticipation of positive feedback. Sign off and proofread the final draft before sending it.

application letter primary school

School admissions

How to apply.

Follow your local council’s application process to:

  • apply for a primary school place
  • apply for a secondary school place

You must still apply for a place, even if the school is linked to your child’s current nursery, infant or primary school.

Apply directly for:

  • a 6th form place at a school or college
  • a place at a private school

Moving to another area

You apply through your local council even if you’re applying for schools in another council area or you’ve just moved to England.

If you’re applying from another country, contact the local council in the area where you’re going to live.

You may need to:

  • supply proof of your new address, for example a mortgage or rental agreement or deeds for the property
  • prove that you’ll live in the area before the start of the next school term

Completing the application

When you fill in the form (online or on paper) you’ll be asked to list the schools you’re applying for in order of preference.

Listing only one school will not increase your chances of getting a place there.

To get a copy of the application form on paper, contact your local council .

When to apply

Applications open on different days in each local council area.

Applying for a primary school place

You must apply for a primary school place a year before your child can start school. The school starting age is 4.

Your child will be 3 or have just turned 4 when you apply.

This is true even if you want your child to start later - you’ll be able to ask for a later start when you apply.

Applications open in September each year and close on 15 January.

Applying for a secondary school place

Applications usually open on 1 September. You must apply for a secondary school place by 31 October.

Your child is less likely to be offered a place at their chosen schools if you miss the deadline for applications.

When you’ll find out

Councils will send offers of school places for:

  • primary schools on 16 April
  • secondary schools on 1 March

If either date falls on a weekend or a bank holiday, offers are sent the next working day.

You must accept the offer by the deadline given in the offer letter. Otherwise it may be withdrawn and the place given to someone else.

The local council must provide a place at another school, if your child is not offered a place at any of the schools you’ve applied for. This is usually your nearest school with places still available.

Applying after the start of the school year

Contact your local council to find out about applying for a school place once the school year has started (known as in-year applications). They can tell you which schools still have places and how to apply.

Once your child has been offered a place, they will usually start school at the beginning of the following term.

Writing an application letter allows you to sell yourself to your potential employer in advance. For you to achieve this, you need to know how to write an application letter appropriately. Unfortunately, this might not be as easy as one would expect.

How to write an application letter

Considering that the teaching jobs are some of the most desired positions for fresh university graduates in Nigeria, the jobs are bound to attract many applicants. Therefore, creating a positive impression is critical if you want to be shortlisted for interviews. One sure way of doing so is through a well-written application letter.

What is a job application letter?

An application or cover letter summarises your strongest and most relevant skills and abilities that will be expanded in your resume or during the interview. It introduces you to potential employers and highlights your suitability for the position you are applying for.

What does relevant experience mean on a resume? Get all the details

Apart from good grammar, an applicant must ensure that they communicate well to the reader. A letter helps you project a particular impression of who you are before presenting yourself for interviews. Therefore, this is a critical stage that you must fully capitalise on. Here are some factors to consider when penning these kinds of letters.

Make it official

For any job seeker, especially those intending to join white-collar jobs such as teaching, knowing how to write an official letter is a must. Therefore, your job application letter must have the following characteristics.

  • Your contact information and date;
  • Employer's postal address;
  • Salutations;
  • The body paragraphs;
  • The closing paragraph;
  • The sign-off.

So, if you want to know how to write an application letter in Nigeria, look no further as the structure is not any different. It has to contain the above features.

Put the accent on your achievements

Prior to sending your application letter for a job vacancy, consider this essential step. To impress your potential employer, make sure you highlight your successes and achievements at your former institution and previous jobs. Make sure you show your teaching certificates and credential skills.

Best advice and samples of how to write a resignation letter

Tell them how you applied your knowledge in practice. You probably have some recognition of excellence, like an award. There is nothing wrong with showing off your achievements. Every employer wants to hire professional and successful teachers. That said, please note that you should not add too many specific details.

how to write a good application letter

Write your application carefully and take your time

A simple job application letter may not be an essential part of some employers' views because some consider job experience to be more important than the ability to express yourself.

However, it does not mean that you can make spelling mistakes or write the letter poorly. Sit back and read how to write an application letter carefully, apply the knowledge you have gained from your research, and make sure your own letter is correct and professional. Do not make a wrong impression at an early stage during the application for employment.

Highlight your other qualifications

Best tips on how to address a letter properly

Most employers would want to have someone who goes the extra mile in achieving their goals. Therefore, it would be best to highlight your other relevant qualifications in your applications for the post of teacher.

If you have any relevant certifications, in addition to your university degree, write about them. Including them will help your cover letter illustrate that you have what it takes to get the job. It is an excellent performance review for you.

Avoid being ordinary

Do not be lazy when creating your application letter for that educational institution where you would like to work. Of course, you can take one of the ready letters and add your name. However, if your potential employer recognises the template you have used, it would be evident to them that you have not applied enough effort to get the position.

Letter of Application – tips and sample!

application letter primary school

I’ve received a few messages asking about what to include in the letter of application. Personally, I give some key points that make me a suitable candidate for the role. The letter of application is the first thing that the selection board will see and therefore you need to stand out and make them interested in reading your application!

How to start; Dear Chairperson Dear Reverend Chairperson Dear Sir/ Madam Dear Mr. X Dear Ms. Y Dear Fr. L To whom it concerns,

There are lots of options to choose from; If the chairperson’s name is given in the application then use it, otherwise try to find the name of the chairperson on the schools website. Only use ‘Reverend Chairperson’ if you are 100% sure he is a priest.

Usually I use; Dear Chairperson.

I wish to apply for the position of ________________ at ___________________ school.

Please find my application for the position of _________________ at _______________ school enclosed/attached (if email).

My _____________ and _______________ would make an excellent addition to your teaching staff.

Next choose 2/3 main points that would make you a perfect candidate. Qualifications? (Teaching practice grades – if newly qualified) Experience (have you worked elsewhere? in a different field – how will this contribute to your teaching?) Music? Drama? Sport? ICT? Other extra curricular activities? Experience as a resource teacher? Working in a range of schools/class levels?

Research any school you would like to work in – read the mission statement and school ethos and see how your skill set and experience fits in with the school.

Dear Chairperson,

I wish to apply for the position of mainstream class teacher at St. Mary’s N.S. I  feel that my experience and enthusiasm in the classroom would make an excellent contribution to your staff.

In the classroom, I use a range of different methodologies to keep the children interested and active in their own learning. I completed my probation in 2014 and have experience as a mainstream and also a learning support teacher. My time as a learning support teacher taught me how to best differentiate for children who have additional learning needs.

I also love to get involved in extra curricular activities. In my current role, I coach the school gaelic football team and was involved in the set up of the school Choir.

Thank you for taking the time to read my application.

Yours faithfully,

_____________

Primary school offer day 2024: Everything you need to know

Primary school offer day

Parents of three and four-year-olds will soon find out what primary school has offered their child a place for the next academic year.

The majority of pupils will be offered a place at one of their preferred primary schools, while most will be offered their top choice.

Here, we explain everything you need to know about primary school offer day, from when you can expect to find out, to how to appeal a decision.

When is primary school offer day and what time are school places released?

Parents will find out which primary school has offered their child a place for September 2024 on  Tuesday 16 April.

The decision will be sent by the local council by either letter or email. Some councils allow parents to view their results through the admissions portal or system. Exactly what time the offers will be released varies by council.

How likely am I to get my first-choice primary school?

We want parents to feel reassured when it comes to getting one of their top choice primary schools.

In 2023, 92.5% of families received an offer from their first choice of primary school and 98.3% received an offer from one of their top three choices.

At the same time, over 1 million additional school places have been created between May 2010 and May 2023, with many more in the pipeline.

What happens after I receive an offer of a school place?

A parent or carer must formally accept the offer by the given deadline. This is usually set through the local authority’s admissions portal or system. You’ll receive details of next steps with the offer.

Can I appeal a primary school placement decision?

If you’re not offered your first-choice school, you can appeal the decision . However, even if you're appealing a decision, we recommend accepting the offer your child did receive so that they have a school place if the appeal is unsuccessful. Accepting another offer won’t affect your appeal or limit other options available to you.

Parents or carers who want to appeal a decision should first contact the school’s admission authority, which is responsible for organising the appeal panel. Parents and carers can find their school’s admission authority by visiting their local council website:  Find your local council - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) .

The panel is independent and will look at the case presented by both the admission authority and the parent before coming to a decision.

The decision of the appeal panel is binding – if the appeal is upheld, the admission authority must offer your child a place at the school.

Admission authorities and appeal panels must comply with the statutory School Admission Appeals Code, which is available  here . Guidance for parents on the admission appeals process can also be found  here .

How are primary school places decided?

All schools have admission criteria to decide which children get places. This criteria is set by the school or local council.

While all state-funded schools must give top priority to admitting children who are in care or have been in care, admission criteria is  different for each school. They may choose to give priority to children:

  • who live close to the school
  • who have a brother or sister at the school already
  • from a particular religion (for faith schools)
  • who are eligible for the pupil premium
  • whose parent has worked at the school for two years or more

Your  local council  can give you information about a school’s criteria.

Why has my child not been offered a place at one of their preferred schools?

Some schools will receive more applications than places it has available and unfortunately not every parent will be successful. Priority must be given to those who most closely meet the school’s specific admission arrangements.

If the local authority is unable to offer a place at one of the parents’ preferred schools, it must offer a place at another school.

In the unlikely event that a parent does not receive an offer of a place on 17 April, parents should contact their local authority for further advice.

Can I join a waiting list for my top-choice primary school?

You can add your child’s name to the waiting list for any school that you’ve applied for. You should still accept the offer you received and this won’t affect where you stand in the waiting list.

Schools must keep a waiting list for at least one term. The waiting list will be ordered by the school’s oversubscription criteria.

In some areas, your child will be automatically added to the waiting lists of the schools you ranked more highly. In others, you must ask to be put on the waiting list. Check the school admissions section of your local authority website to find out how it works in your area.

Primary school offer day 2024: How to find out if your child has been accepted and appeal

As parents of three and four-year-olds prepare to receive their primary school offers for September 2024, here is everything you need to know about admissions and appeals

Pupil

  • 12:38, 15 Apr 2024

Parents across the country will soon find out if their child has been offered a place at their preferred primary school .

On primary school offer day, local councils inform parents of three and four-year-olds which school has offered their child a place for the next academic year. When applying, families will have submitted a first-choice school and backup options.

Last year, 92.5 percent of families received an offer from their first-choice and 98.3 percent received an offer from their top three. All schools have admissions criteria, set by the school or local council, to decide which children are offered places.

State-funded schools must give top priority to children who are in care or have been in care. Other criteria may include proximity to the school, siblings, religion, parents who are employed by the school and those eligible for pupil premium.

If parents are not happy with their child's allocated primary school, they have time to appeal and add their child's name to their preferred school's waiting list. Here is everything we know about the offer acceptance and appeals process...

How do I find out my child's primary school offer?

The majority of parents and carers will receive their child's primary school offer for September 2024 by either a letter or email from their local council on Tuesday, April 16. Some councils also have an admissions portal or system online.

The time the offers will be released varies from council to council. If a parent does not receive an offer by the end of Wednesday, April 17, they should contact their local authority for further advice.

What happens after I receive an offer?

Parents and carers must formally accept their child's primary school offer before the given deadline. Details of this will be included in the offer. If you have not been offered your first-choice school, you can appeal the decision.

The Government advises accepting the offer your child did receive, even if you are appealing the decision, to ensure they have a school place if the appeal is unsuccessful. This will not affect your appeal.

How do I appeal my child's primary school offer?

If you want to appeal your child's primary school offer, you should first contact the school's admission authority. You can find their contact details by visiting your local council's website on the Government's website here .

In some areas, your child will automatically be added to the waiting lists of schools you ranked more highly. In others, you must ask to be put on the waiting list. This will be explained on the school admissions section of your local authority website.

The appeals panel is independent and must comply with the statutory School Admission Appeals Code . More guidance for parents on the appeals process can be found on the Government's website here .
