In recent times, the issue of alcohol abuse has escalated across the globe, becoming a pressing concern for societies worldwide. This alarming trend not only poses serious health risks but also catalyzes social and economic problems. The crux of this essay lies in examining the multifaceted causes behind this surge in alcohol abuse and proposing pragmatic solutions to mitigate its adverse effects.

The roots of alcohol abuse are deeply entwined with both societal and individual factors. On a societal level, the relentless pressure of modern life, characterized by competitive work environments and rapid urbanization, pushes many towards alcohol as a misguided form of escape from stress and anxiety. Alcohol Consumption - band 7

The two graphs illustrate alcohol consumption in the U.K. The first bar graph compares the percentage of people drinking alcohol more than the recommended levels at least once a week depending on four different age groups. As well as this, the second line graph shows the amount of alcohol consumed by boys and girls aged 11-15 from 1990 to 2004.

In general, it can be seen that the alcohol consumption goes down with age. In addition to this, males tended to drink more alcohol than females.

If we look at the first graph given in a more specific way, the two youngest male groups (aged 16-24 and 25-44) have the highest demand in alcohol consumption of approximately 45% in both. Similarly, for girls, with just under 40%, those who aged 16-24 shows quite a high level of alcohol consumption. In contrast, only 20% of the oldest male group(65 and over)drunk alcohol regularly, which is the smallest level among the age groups in the male.  Interestingly, 65 and over females illustrate the least percentage of merely 5% among all the ages regardless of gender. 

When it comes to the illegal drinking ages(aged 11-15), both girls and boys are inclined to drink more and more over the time period. The amount of alcohol consumed by the boys and girls have been doubled from unit 6 to 12 and from 5% to 10% between 1990 to 2004 respectively, even though girls drunk less than boys throughout the given period.  

As we can see from the data, concerns about alcohol consumption are reflected by the fact that there are a mounting number of teenagers and young people drinking alcohol.

The candidate has summarised the information well and included a clear overview of the important features. (band 7)

Coherence & Cohesion

Paragraphing is clear and logical, the answer flows smoothly and the candidate makes good use of a variety of linking expressions to join the ideas. (7)

Lexical Resource

The candidate has used some good collocations to describe the statistics. (7)

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

Grammar is mostly accurate, although there are some small errors with sentence structure to attend to. (7)

Overall Comment - how to improve

Overall, this is a good answer which selects and describes the main features of the graphs with a clear overview. To improve, the candidate needs to make sure that all key information is included and to check sentence structure for accuracy.

IELTS Writing: Agree or Disagree Lesson with Sample Answer

Agree or disagree essays: ielts writing task 2 lesson.

This lesson will teach you how to write ‘agree or disagree’ or ‘opinion’ IELTS task 2 essays that could score a Band 7, 8 or 9.

Agree or disagree question types are among the most common on the IELTS writing paper, so you must learn how to write them properly.

In this post, we will look at:

Deciding Opinion

Idea generation.

We will use a question from an IELTS past paper to help us understand the task.

Many students fail to do well in this type of question because they do not have a clear opinion and they do not use an appropriate structure .

The best structure you can use for this type of essay is:

Paragraph 1- Introduction

Sentence 1- Paraphrase Question

Sentence 2- Thesis Statement

Sentence 3- Outline Statement

Paragraph 2- Supporting Paragraph 1

Sentence 1- Topic Sentence

Sentence 2/3- Explain Topic Sentence

Sentence 3/4- Example

Paragraph 3- Supporting Paragraph 2

Paragraph 4- Conclusion

Sentence 1- Summary and reiteration of your opinion.

That’s it! Four paragraphs.

Note : You don’t have to use this structure; other structures can get you a high score. However, this structure has been approved by IELTS examiners to allow you to write a clear and cohesive essay. This structure will allow you to focus on generating your ideas and then writing an effective essay.

In this essay, IELTS examiners want you to give a clear opinion, so you must decide when you read the question. You will also need to do this to write an effective thesis statement.

Let’s look at an example:

In some countries, many people suffer from health problems due to eating too much fast food. It is, therefore, necessary for governments to impose a higher tax on this kind of food.

Do you agree or disagree?

  With this type of essay, we have two choices:

• We agree with the statement or;
• We disagree with the statement

Some teachers advise you to partly agree and disagree. However, I would NOT recommend this because it often leads to an essay with NO clear focus and a CONFUSING structure.

Therefore, for this agree or disagree essay, you can say either:

• This essay agrees that governments should tax fast food or;
• This essay disagrees that governments should tax fast food

I think I will have more ideas for A, so I’m choosing that one. Always choose the one you feel comfortable writing about – even if you don’t feel that way. You don’t get extra marks for writing about how you feel; you want to give the examiner what they need to score your essay a Band 7+.

Now we have to think of ideas for why governments should tax fast food.

Here are some:

• Cigarettes and alcohol are taxed in the same way
• The money raised could be used to treat people with health problems
• Fast food companies should be punished for selling unhealthy food to people
• Making the food more expensive would stop people from eating it
• The money raised could be used to educate people about healthy eating

We don’t need to use all of these, just two for our supporting paragraphs. I will pick the first and the fourth ones because I know a little about these two and feel confident I can expand on them with explanations and examples. Remember, the examiner wants you to fully support your arguments, not just list many ideas.

Now we have two supporting ideas; we can move on to our introduction.

Introduction

As previously stated, we will use the following structure:

To paraphrase  the question, we restate it with a different meaning using synonyms. I will also reorder the question. Here is the question again:

In some countries, an increasing number of people are suffering from health problems due to eating too much fast food. It is, therefore, necessary for governments to impose a higher tax on this kind of food.

Paraphrased: It is argued that governments should levy a tariff on junk food because the health risks associated with consuming this kind of food are rising. 

This is our first sentence.

We now need to write our thesis statement. This is our opinion in one sentence. This essay will agree with the above statement and will, therefore, look like this:

This essay agrees that a higher rate of tax should be paid by fast-food companies.

This is our second sentence.

We now need to write our third and final sentence, which is the outline sentence . This sentence outlines what you will write about in the main body paragraphs.

Firstly, alcohol and tobacco companies already pay higher taxes; secondly, higher taxes could raise prices and lower consumption. 

So our full introduction will look like this:

It is argued that governments should levy a tariff on junk food because the number of health risks associated with consuming this kind of food is on the rise. This essay agrees that a higher rate of tax should be paid by fast-food companies. Firstly, alcohol and tobacco companies already pay higher taxes; secondly, higher taxes could raise prices and lower consumption.

We now need to write our supporting paragraphs for our agree or disagree essay:

Supporting Paragraph 1

This paragraph should include:

• Topic Sentence
• Explanation

A topic sentence tells the examiner about the rest of the paragraph. In other words, it is a summary of your first idea. It should look something like this:

Higher excise on liqueur and cigarettes has proven to curb the harm caused by these substances.

We now need to expand on this point a little. A good way of doing this is to assume that the examiner does not know this subject, and you must explain clearly what you mean. Here is what this could look like:

This revenue has been used to treat health problems associated with these products and has proven useful in advertising campaigns warning people about the dangers of alcohol and tobacco abuse. Tax from fast food could be used in the same way.

We should now think of an example to support our point. Think about any recent news stories, studies or adverts. If you can’t think of one, make one up. The examiner won’t check if it is real or not.

The United Kingdom is a prime example, where money from smokers is used to treat lung cancer and heart disease while at the same time, pumped into health campaigns in schools to warn children about the dangers of smoking.     

That’s it. Four sentences. The full paragraph should look like this:

Higher excise on liqueur and cigarettes has proven to curb the harm caused by these substances. This revenue has been used to treat health problems associated with these products and has proven useful in advertising campaigns warning people about the dangers of alcohol and tobacco abuse. Tax from fast food could be used in the same way. The United Kingdom is a prime example, where money from smokers is used to treat lung cancer and heart disease.

Supporting Paragraph 2

We now repeat the same formula with our second supporting point- higher taxes will increase prices and reduce consumption.

Our topic sentence:

Increasing taxes would raise prices and lower consumption.

Explaining this further:

Fast food companies would pass on these taxes to consumers in the form of higher prices, leading to people not being able to afford junk food because it is too expensive. Junk food would soon become a luxury item, and it would only be consumed occasionally, which would be less harmful to the general public’s health.

We now support our point with an example:

For instance, the cost of organic food has proven prohibitively expensive for most people, and that is why only a small percentage of the population buys it regularly.

The full paragraph would look like this:

Increasing taxes would raise prices and lower consumption. Fast food companies would pass on these taxes to consumers in the form of higher prices, leading to people not being able to afford junk food because it is too expensive. Junk food would soon become a luxury item, and it would only be consumed occasionally, which would be less harmful to the general public’s health. For instance, the cost of organic food has proven prohibitively expensive for most people, and that is why only a small percentage of the population buys it regularly.

Four sentences.

Conclusion  

As stated before, a good conclusion for agree or disagree essays should include:

Sentence 1- Summary of main points

Sentence 2- Your opinion

Don’t write any new ideas in this paragraph.

A good conclusion should restate your thesis statement and your main supporting points.

In conclusion, junk food should be taxed at a higher rate because of the good precedent set by alcohol and tobacco and the fact that the increased cost should reduce the number of fast-food people buy.

Band 7 Sample Answer for Writing Task 2 Question – Tobacco and Alcohol are Drugs that Cause Addiction and Health Problems

A large percentage of individuals think that alcohol and tobacco should be banned since they are substances that can lead to addiction and health issues. In this essay, I will explain why I agree with this viewpoint.

In the first place, tobacco and alcohol are well-known contributors to multiple health problems, including lung cancer, liver cirrhosis, cardiovascular diseases, and addiction. One of my uncles passed away due to liver cirrhosis, as he used to drink alcohol regularly even when the doctor asked him not to. As a result, supporters of this ban argue that making these substances illegal would result in a significant reduction in the prevalence of such health issues.

Moreover, addictive substances, especially alcohol, are linked to poor judgment and an increased risk of accidents, including drunk driving incidents. Every year, a large number of people meet with deadly accidents due to intoxication. Due to this, a considerable burden on healthcare systems is created. So, people feel that making alcohol illegal could enhance public safety by minimizing alcohol-related accidents and violence.

Alcohol and cigarettes both have adverse impacts on health and can cause severe addiction. I truly believe that the use of alcohol and tobacco should be prohibited since they are addictive and cause other health issues.

To begin with, more than 25 distinct fatal diseases, such as emphysema, bronchitis, and lung cancer, are linked to smoking. Recent data indicates that tobacco-related diseases claim the lives of four million people worldwide each year, or one death every eight seconds. More people are dying from and getting disabled from tobacco use than from any other single factor. Additionally, smoking tobacco affects not just smokers but also those in the vicinity as they inhale the smoke emitted. Accordingly, smoking ought to be restricted to improve public health. A nation could treat more patients with the amount of money it spends annually on treating citizens with diseases linked to tobacco use.

Moreover, the use of alcohol has grown to be a significant issue during the past few centuries. An increasing number of individuals consume alcohol daily, which leads to severe issues like brain damage, divorce from one’s spouse, and dissolution of a family. In addition, consumption of alcohol reduces productivity, which affects the life of the individual as well as the people around him. Thus, alcohol ought to be banned everywhere.

In conclusion, I believe that the two biggest risks to society and our health are alcohol and cigarettes, as they cause several health and social issues. Therefore, the government should make the use of tobacco and alcohol illegal and individuals should behave more responsibly. (261 words)

The idea of making tobacco and alcohol illegal is a controversial issue as people are divided in their opinion. In my opinion, although these substances do indeed pose significant health risks and can lead to addiction, banning them may not be the most effective solution. Therefore, I will discuss my viewpoint in the following paragraphs with relevant examples.

It is true that tobacco and alcohol consumption are major contributors to various health problems, including heart disease, liver damage, respiratory issues, and various cancers. Simultaneously, the use of tobacco and alcohol can impair judgment and coordination, leading to accidents and injuries. As a result, supporters argue that prohibiting the use of alcohol would protect individuals from the associated health risks and reduce mishaps. However, history has shown that outright prohibition can lead to black markets, smuggling, and increased criminal activity. The prohibition of alcohol in the United States during the 1920s, for example, led to the rise of organized crime.

Furthermore, supporters of the ban opine that the health consequences of tobacco and alcohol use place a considerable economic burden on healthcare systems worldwide. Likewise, the consumption of these harmful substances is often linked to social problems, including domestic violence, crime, and public disturbances. Nonetheless, some believe outlawing them will not be effective as it is a personal choice. Therefore, individuals must become responsible and consciously try to prevent the damaging effects.

Do we live healthy enough lives?

In many countries people are having health problems because they choose to live a unhealthy life. What are the reasons for this? What can be done to solve this problem? It is important to consider that why in today's fast paced life, people prefer to live a ruinous lifestyle. In this essay I will explore some causes associated with this and propose some solutions to tackle this issue. First of all, the main reason which contribute to this problem is inflation rate. Therefore, people need to work over time to fulfill their basic needs which left them with less time for exercises and recreational sports. As a consequence, they fail to balance between personal and professional life. To illustrate, many time companies give double pay to employees for working in over time. So, if they work over time for more money, very less time left for their daily routine. Hence, they skip physical exercises. However, to tackle this problem, governments should pass the ordinance of fix working hours and national wage regulation. So that, people prefer to leave work place on time, and because of this, they find some leisure time for themselves. Furthermore, in today's world, private club membership is becoming more and more expensive and there are less public space to recreate. As a result of this, people choose to avoid exercises. The reason for this is that, to cope with excessive population growth, governments mostly focus to build vertical concrete buildings rather that sports complex, parks and gardens. Hence, people get demotivated to do exercises. In contrast, if governments focus more on building recreational sports facilities or public gym, people find them cheaper options and they begin to do exercises. Therefore, to handle this situation, authorities should build more public spaces for free time activities. So that, people can stay healthy. In conclusion, while people are having more problems in many countries around the globe because of unhealthy lifestyle, this problem is not insurmountable. In my view, this the government's responsibility to tackle this issue and they should begin by considering some of the proposed solutions above.

Looking After Health

Hello, It's been a long time. I noticed I wasn't good enough and I spent several weeks to enhance my writing. Please judge my latest one. Thank you sincerely. People should look after their health for personal benefits, rather than a duty for a society. To what extent do you agree or disagree? There is an ever-increasing opinion that keeping fit should be considered as a good deep for oneself, instead of a duty to society. From my perspective, although the cost of health services may be unsatisfied with some patients, the advantages of this opinion outweigh its disadvantages for the following reasons. We can point out the indisputable fact that the health of every resident is facing a range of dangers increasingly. As consequences of the industrialization, we could see a plenty of examples such as diseases coming from pesticides in agriculture, gas emission in transportation or chemical components in junk foods. Besides, wars, crashes and sudden accidents also lead people to injuries, as the more the development we reach, the heavier the consequenses we must stand in some circumstances. Another equally important reason could be prevailing usages of medical insurance. Take the change of thoughts in well-being over these years as an evident. In the past, the prescription charges used to be worries of most households. Residents sometimes rejected to receive check-ups, while medical centers were known as the isolated places for wealthy social class only. However, nowadays, the prospecrity of economy eliminates those anxieties by medical insurances. Citizens may easily go private to heal their aches and pains or even diabetes, cardiac problems. Being as fit as a fiddle, thus, could be a possible goal. The long and the short of it, I am strongly in favour of the belief that keeping healthy is an action for every single individuals, due to the dangers of illnesses and the benefits of health insurances.

Alternative Medicine

Currently there is a trend towards the use of alternative forms of medicine. However, at best these methods are ineffective, and at worst they may be dangerous. To what extent do you agree with this statement? Traditionally, people in the past used alternative medicine for a long time. Nowadays, many people are still using this medicine to treat a lot of diseases. It is agreed that alternative medicine is not useful and sometime dangerous. Analysing both invalidity of alternative medicine to treat many illnesses as well as the dangerous of drugs in this medicine will show this. Firstly, alternative medicine does not use techniques and facilities that are important to treat a lot of illnesses as modern medicine do. For example, many diseases require surgery operations to succeed by using many technical devices such as sonar and X-Ray that help doctors to perform these operations in a best way. Therefore, alternative medicine is not the best to process many illnesses. Thus this makes it clear why alternative medicine is not effective and useless. Secondly, drugs in alternative medicine do not tested scientifically to specify if it is dangerous or not. For instance, alternative medicine uses plants to produce drugs and these plants may be contain toxic materials or any other dangerous substances. So, when human uses these drugs that are harmful, the state of person may be worse and sometime lead to death. From this it becomes quite evident that alternative medicine may be dangerous and harmful. In summary, alternative medicine has many drawbacks such as useless and sometime very dangerous. Thus, it is clear why the idea of using alternative medicine is helpful to treat many diseases cannot be supported. After analysing this subject, it is predicted that negative aspects of using alternative medicine much more than positive ones and the government should have full control of using alternative medicine. Will people's health be worse in the future?

Hii could you give me opinions on this essay? thanks! The average standard of people’s health is likely to be lower in the future than it is now. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? It has been asserted nowadays that in the future people's health could witness a decrease compared to its present parameters. Personally, I strongly disagree with this view. Nonetheless, this essay will discuss both sides, using both academical examples. On the one hand, the ever-growing use of experimental cures and treatments, which have lately been conducted in most hospitalization centres, could lead us to believe that there are no reasons to think that people's health is likely to deteriorate soon. Governments and benefactors all over the world are known to fund improvements for research centres, in order to find a cure for rare diseases, such as lyme and lupus, and in the fight against the coronavirus in these two previous years, scientists and doctors' experiments have led to successful results, thanks to the large amount of time and money invested on it. This can be used as an example to explain how our heath is efficiently handled by people, who are constantly studying to ameliorate our fairly fragile immune system. On the other hand, pollution and climate changes play pivotal roles in the increasing cases of all kinds of cancers and tumours, resulting in a pejoration of our general health. The index of greenhouse gases emissions is dangerously high in the latest years and the contamination of air and food is the greatest aggravating factor for these mortal diseases. For instance, outputs carried out by Oxford University in 2020, shows us how, in the next 10 years, we will conclusively be affected by more pandemics and rare diseases, due to air pollution and the poorly conditions of our planet. Having manifested the aforementioned points of view and examples, it can be recapitulated that in my opinion, albeit the increasing environmental pollution and the issues resulted from it, doctors and scientist are outrightly engaged in improving our conditions and we will undergo promising experimental treatments to better recover from maladies.

Hi friends! can you estimate my writing essay plz Alcohol is sold in many countries only to people who are above 21. Is it a positive or negative development? In some countries alcohol is sold only to people whose ages starts from 21. I am entirely convinced that this issue positively influences community nowadays and must be controlled in the whole world. First and foremost, it saves lives of people by preventing alcohol-related traffic fatalities. Brain of adolescent is affected differently by alcohol than the adult brain. Although, in a state of alcohol impairment, the adolescent brain is impaired similar to adult brain but to differing degrees. Brain of people who did not reached 21 is worse in remembering things while they are drunk. In contrast, early drink-starters are more likely predicted to experience alcohol drinking and related problems later in their life. Additionally, many researches confirm that in the countries, where alcohol sale is restricted to people who did not reached 21, the overall number of alcohol-related fatalities has decreased. Furthermore, early alcohol consumption can lead to disastrous calamities like suicides or murders, affecting brain of adolescents unconsciously. Beside this, young people who start using alcohol before age 21 are more likely to be involved in violent behaviors. Consumption of alcohol at the early ages are also detrimentally linked to human health and can lead to kidneys disease. In conclusion, from my point of view, age restriction on alcohol sale in some countries has beneficial impact to community rather than negative, and I strongly believe that this age limitation will be in all countries in the next decade.

In addition, these people may be bread winner of their families. Hence, neglecting those people by the health care sector would put their lives to danger, thereby creating various problems to dependents. Furthermore, smoking is an addiction which is difficult to quite. There are numerous ways to attract people to smoking in the society. Moreover, cigarettes are available in the market where everyone can reach it easily. Adictors need to assistance of health professionals in order to quitting smoking. Additionally, people have been dead considerably due to other reasons such as motor vehicle accidents and become disabled because of careless driving. However, treatments are given freely for them. On the other hand, fumes released to atmosphere by tobacco consuming put passive smokers to danger. It is true that people are educated frequently about negative side effects of smoking. As a result, the individuals should be responsible for their health. In conclusion, it is acceptable that smokers put not only their lives but others live danger also. These cigar-smokers are extra burden to the health care system of any country due to various reason. Although, health as a fundamental need of human, smokers should have equal opportunity to reach to health care facilities similarly to others.

In middle of past century used tobacco became a part of modern societies. many factories established to make cigarette. Consequently many people got a job. In movie every star was smoker and drink alcohol, but today many people believe tobacco and alcohol have bad effects and must be prohibit. I actually agree with idea that tobacco and alcohol and every kind of drugs must be illegal. I have some reason for that. First of all, all kind of drugs, alcohol and tobacco have bad effect on health of people. Cigarette causes some diseases such as lung cancer. Moreover, nicotine destroy brain's cell. Cigarette not only impact on smokers, also has bad effect on non smokers around them. Smoke is more danger of nicotine. Secondly, we must spend money for use tobacco or alcohol. This cost can be use someplace else, for example for traveling. Finally, government must allocate huge budget for medicines that used for this people And also cigarette pollute air too. In additional, drinking alcohol damage people live too. Many accident happen when driver is drunk. Forever, this people lost their control on behavior, so they do some illegal act. And I also believe drink alcohol, damage on Liver. Finally, tobacco and alcohol has a lot of negative effects on our society. Our children, old people are vulnerable. In my opinion government must ban them. It can do by increase taxes on use tobacco or cigarette or alcohol. We must show in media that how much alcohol and tobacco are harmful.
