v word lists for speech therapists to use in articulation therapy

Correct Production of V

Just like the f sound, the v sound is a labiodental fricative sound. The only difference, however, is that the v sound is voiced, meaning that the vocal cords, or vocal folds, vibrate. To produce the v sound, the top teeth need to rest against the bottom lip. When the top front teeth are placed on the lower lip, the air is directed through, and there is audible friction when this occurs. The result will be /v/ in isolation.

v words and articulation activities for speech therapy

How To Teach the V Sound in Speech Therapy

Many of the same treatment approaches for the f sound can be used to elicit the v sound. The child will need to learn how to turn the “voice on” to produce a v.

A great way to provide is a tactile cue is to tap your bottom lip.

Try giving the v sound a “funny name” for young children. While the f sound could be termed “the bunny teeth sound”, the v sound could be the “vroom vroom” sound.

Try placing a mirror in front of your student. Have him bite on his lower lip, and make sure he can see his upper teeth. Then have him blow air while drawing attention to the vibration that occurs with a voiced v sound.

Students with phonological disorders may exhibit a process called stopping . If a student stops the v sound (i.e., says “ban” for “van”), try slowing things down. Model the v sound, pause, then say the rest of the word. This technique can also work for a stop insertion error (i.e. your student says ‘b….van’). Model the v sound, open your mouth wide and exaggerate the vowel, then say the rest of the word. “V…AAAAAAn.” Read more about the different phonological processes .

Speech pathologists may benefit by having the child  keep the jaw in an elevated position . Try to encourage jaw stability.

How to Teach F Sound: Articulation Activities, and Word Lists for Effective Speech Therapy

How to teach ch sound: articulation activities, and word lists for effective speech therapy, how to teach v sound: articulation activities, and word lists for effective speech therapy.

The “v” sound is a voiced labiodental fricative, which means that it is produced by forcing air through a narrow channel between the lower lip (labial) and the upper teeth (dental) while simultaneously vibrating the vocal cords. This creates a friction noise that is similar to the “f” sound but with the addition of a buzzing or humming sensation in the throat.

To produce the “v” sound, you need to place your lower lip gently against your upper teeth and then push air through the small gap between them while simultaneously narrowing the gap with your lips and allowing your vocal cords to vibrate. This creates a continuous friction noise that is characterized by a buzzing or humming sound. You can try producing this sound by saying the word “very” or “love” and paying attention to the way your lips, breath, and vocal cords work together to create the sound. In phonetics, this sound is represented by the symbol /v/. It is also sometimes referred to as the “voiced labiodental fricative.”

Here are few tips you can follow to teach the “V” sound:

speech words starting with v

Demonstrate the sound: Start by demonstrating the “V” sound for your child. Make the sound and have your child watch your lips and mouth movements. Explain that the sound is made by placing the top teeth on the bottom lip and vibrating the vocal cords.

Visual Cue: Show the child how to place their upper teeth on their lower lip and then blow air out while making a voiced sound. You can use a mirror to help the child see how their lips and teeth are positioned. You can also use a visual cue such as a picture or flashcard of a “V” to help your child remember the sound.

Understand the sound: Help your child understand that the “V” sound is a voiced consonant made by placing the top teeth on the bottom lip and vibrating the vocal cords.

Practice Blowing: Help your child get used to the sensation of blowing out air with their mouth by having them practice blowing bubbles, blowing feathers across a table, or blowing out candles.

Practice Tongue Placement: Show your child how to keep their tongue relaxed and behind their top teeth while making the “V” sound. You can make it more fun by having them imitate animal sounds, such as a purring cat or a buzzing bee, while using the “V” sound.

Practice in Isolation: Once your child has mastered the correct tongue and mouth position, have them practice making the “V” sound on its own without any other sounds.

Add Syllables: After your child has mastered the “V” sound in isolation, have them practice using it in different syllables, such as “va,” “ve,” and “vo.” You can make it more fun by having them say silly words like “vegetable,” “vanilla,” and “volcano.”

Practice in Words: Once your child has mastered the “V” sound in syllables, have them practice using it in different words such as “van,” “vase,” and “velvet.”

Practice in Phrases: After your child has mastered the “V” sound in words, have them practice using it in phrases like “big van,” “red vase,” and “soft velvet.”

Practice in Sentences: Finally, have your child practice using the “V” sound in different sentences such as “I see a big van,” “The vase is on the table,” and “I love soft velvet.”

Practice Everywhere: Encourage your child to practice using the “V” sound in different contexts, such as during playtime, mealtime, or while reading books. You can also make it more fun by having them use the “V” sound in different accents or dialects.

Each list of articulation sounds contains words with the target sound in the beginning, middle, and end position, including blends when applicable, as well as words that...

  • are common and functional (words we use all day...everyday)
  • are mostly 1 syllable (multi-syllabic words are more difficult)
  • have a phonemic context that don't interfere with production of the target sound (most words)

If "R" is the problem sound using the word "Rope" makes saying the "R" sound harder because the "O" sound is considered a round vowel.

A round vowel is one where you round your lips to say it. Go ahead...try it by saying "O" as in "boat". You rounded your lips didn't you? I thought you might.

Children who have difficulty with the "R" sound tend to say the "W" sound...they say "Wabbit" instead of "Rabbit".

The "W" sound is considered a rounded sound too. Try saying the "W" sound without rounding your lips...you can't because that is how the sound is made.

So by pairing the "R" sound with the "O" sound like in the word "Rope", this makes the word extra difficult for a child who has a problem saying the "R" sound because the "O" that follows the "R" will naturally make them want to round there lips.

40 Vibrant V-Words To Revamp Your Vocabulary

By paul anthony jones | sep 8, 2022, 5:35 pm edt.

speech words starting with v

Ever seen a Latin inscription that uses words like jvdicivm (rather than judicium , “judgment”), vinvm (rather than vinum , “wine”), or vocivvs (rather than vocivus, “empty”)? That’s because, historically, V used to be used to represent both the “v” sound we still use it for today, and the vowel sound we now represent as a U . All that started to change in the early Middle Ages, when a trend emerged to only use angular V at the beginnings of words, and a rounded V (or, in other words, a U ) in the middles or ends of words, regardless of the sound involved. So while love became loue , upon became vpon ,  have became haue , under became vnder, and so on .

Unfortunately for V , that meant that U took the lion’s share of the use (or rather, the vse ), and earned it much more importance in English than it ever previously had. Not only that, but because you’re much more likely to come across a “u” sound inside a word than at the beginning of it, by the time the two finally began to be considered as separate letters in the 17th century, it was U that took the more commonly used vowel sound, while V took the relatively rarer v sound. Even today, you can still expect V to account for only 1 percent  of all the English you’ll use, and the letter is at the start of just over 0.5 percent of the words in a standard dictionary—including the 40 V words listed here.

An 18th century word from the far north of Scotland meaning “a stream of filthy water.”

2. Va-et-Vient

The French for “going-and-coming” was borrowed into English during the First World War to describe a to-ing and fro-ing, chopping-and-changing movement or pattern, or a bandying, back-and-forth discussion.

3. Vagabundulo

A prank or unscrupulous trick designed to deceive someone—in other words, one that might be played by a vagabond.

4. Valentining

The singing of mating birds in the spring is valentining .

5. Van-Jotthery

An 18th-century Yorkshire dialect word for a random assortment of things.

6. Vandemonianiam

A Vandemonian is an inhabitant of Tasmania, which was originally named Van Diemen’s Land by the Europeans who arrived there in the 17th and 18th centuries. By the 19th century, it was being used by British courts as one of the many Australian sites to which convicts and criminals were transported as punishment. As a result, the Victorian slang term vandemonianism came to be used to refer to rowdy, disorderly behavior.

An old Scots dialect word for a sudden and heavy shower of rain.

Named in honor of the Flemish artist Sir Anthony Van Dyck , a Vandyke is both a type of ruff collar and the name of a style of beard combining an elaborate moustache and goatee. Based on how stylish both of those were (or are, depending on your fashion sense), you can also use Vandyke as a verb meaning “to dress flamboyantly.”

9. Vaniloquence

Empty, blathering chatter.

10. Vapulatory

To vapulate someone is to strike or flog them, so if something feels or appears vapulatory , then it resembles a sound thrashing .

11. Vartiwell

The little metal hoop that a gate hook sits inside? That’s the vartiwell .

12. Vaticinate

Vates was the Latin word for a seer or soothsayer. Derived from that, to vaticinate means to speak like a prophet or to foresee the future, while a vaticiny is a prediction or prophecy.

13. Vauntparler

Derived from French, vauntparler is a 16th-century word for someone who speaks on someone else’s behalf …

14. Vauntsquare

… while vauntsquare is a 16th-century word meaning “to perfectly face the front.”

Also spelled feague , a veague is a teasing child.

16. Vectitation

The process of carrying something from one place to another. Anything described as vectarious does precisely that. Both words are derived from the same root as words like convection and vector .

17. Velitation

A petty fight or squabble.

18. Venenate

To venenate something is to envenom it—or, in other words, to render it poisonous.

19. Verbigerate

While verbigeration is clichéd, repetitive writing or language, the verb to verbigerate is to senselessly or involuntarily or senselessly or involuntarily repeat the same thing over and over again and over and over again and again.

20. Verecundious

An old 17th-century word meaning “ extremely modest .” The root form verecund , meaning “bashful” or “meek,” comes from a Latin word for “reverence” or “fear.”

21. Verfremdungseffekt

No prizes for guessing that this was borrowed into English from German—it’s another name for what’s otherwise known as the “alienation effect” or “distancing effect,” a theatrical term used to refer to a playwright deliberately distancing the events on stage from their audience, usually by including constant reminders that they’re merely watching a performance into the play. The German playwright Bertolt Brecht is credited with inventing this unusual technique, and is by far its most famous exponent. He would often project captions onto the stage and even go so far as to have actors step in and out of character mid-performance. (Feel free just to call it the “V-effect,” by the way …)

22. Veriloquous

If you’re veriloquous or veriloquent , then you speak the truth. ( Honestly .)

23. Verkramp

A South African-origin word used to describe someone who is narrow-minded or extremely conservative in their views. It literally means “cramped” in Afrikaans.

24. Vernalagnia

Literally meaning “spring-lust,” vernalagnia is the proper name for “spring fever”—an increase in a person’s spirits or romantic feelings when the weather improves after winter. Or, as one 19th-century dictionary defined it, “the listless feeling caused by the first sudden increase of temperature in spring."

As well as being the name of a part of a church, vestry is an old Cornish English word for the smiling of children in their sleep.

26. Vincent

Probably a pun on vincens , a Latin word meaning “victorious” or “conquering,” vincent is a Tudor-period word for the duped player in a crooked game of cards or bowls. Vincent’s Law is an equally old nickname for the art of cheating at games.

27. Vinerous

If you’re vinerous or vansome , then you’re hard to please .

28. Vitilitigate

To quarrel or backbite .

29. Vivific

Anything that enlivens or gives life is vivific . The process involved is called vivification .

30. Vivisepulture

Need a technical term for being buried alive ? No? Well, too bad, now you have one anyway. And being burned alive? That’s vivicombustion .

31. Vizardless

Vizard is a Tudor-period word for a mask, so if you’re vizarded , you’re disguised, and if you’re vizardless , then you’re unmasked or overt. In the 17th century, a vizard-mask was a woman who “disguised herself” in public—or, in other words, a sex worker.

32. Voiding-Lobby

Coined by Shakespeare to refer to a waiting room or entranceway.

An old Irish word for a zealously pious person.

36. Vowel-Mauler

Nineteenth-century slang for an indistinct speaker .

If the weather looks voxy , then it looks uncertain or changeable .

An old southwest English word meaning “to hit someone with your elbow.”

40. Vulpinate

Derived from the Latin word for “fox,” vulpes , to vulpinate , is to wilily cheat or deceive someone.

Printable pdf speech therapy games for slps.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) incorporate games as an essential component of therapy, using them to enhance learning through play. Building Rapport and Overcoming Unfamiliarity: Establishing a connection with the child is crucial at the beginning of therapy, especially when there may be initial hesitancy due to unfamiliarity with the SLP. Playing games proves to be an effective way to ease this hesitation, fostering a sense of fun and laughter. Sense of Accomplishment: Games provide children with a platform to experience success during therapy. Through errorless learning, children can feel a sense of control, particularly when they take on the role of teaching the SLP how to play. This dynamic encourages confidence and active participation. Addressing Challenges: Confronting speech or language difficulties can be daunting for children who fear making mistakes. Games contribute to creating a positive balance by infusing an element of enjoyment into the learning process. Beyond Therapy Goals: Games offer an avenue for additional learning beyond the specific therapy goals, encompassing social skills and turn-taking, contributing to holistic development. Enhancing Motor Skills: Many games involve the manipulation of small pieces, providing the additional benefit of practicing fine motor skills while engaging in enjoyable activities.

135+ Voiced TH Words Speech Therapy (Free Word Lists)

Voiced th words speech therapy.

Are you a speech therapist or parent looking for voiced TH words to practice with your child or student? Then this blog is just what you need! It has over 135 voiced TH words for speech therapy that will help strengthen your child or student’s /th/ sound.

In the world of speech therapy, mastering the “th” sound is important for clear and effective communication. As speech therapists, we know that the “th” sound is particularly essential, since it appears frequently in every day conversations, and is also one of the most common mispronounced sounds.

By understanding and focusing on voiced “th” words in speech therapy sessions, we as speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and our clients can work together to improve speech clarity and overall language development.

Voiced “th” sounds are created when the vocal cords vibrate and the air is pushed through the small space between the teeth and tongue.

This unique sound can be tricky for some individuals, particularly young children and non-native English speakers who may not have been exposed to it early in life.

This blog is just what you need when working on the pronunciation and articulation of voiced TH words! We will cover various techniques that can be employed in your speech therapy session to help clients develop and strengthen their pronunciation of voiced “th” words.

Key Takeaways

  • Speech therapy aims to improve the pronunciation of voiced “th” words to enhance communication.
  • Voiced “th” sounds are key components of everyday conversations, making early intervention crucial.
  • Various teaching methods and different resource types can be employed to differentiate between voiced and voiceless “th” sounds.
  • There are additional resources listed in this post that can be used as helpful resources when working on the voiced “th” sounds in speech therapy.

Understanding Voiced Th Sounds

As a speech therapist, I found that one of the common challenges is understanding and mastering the voiced “th” sound. It seemed to be one of the most common mispronounced sounds in the past within my caseload.

To cover the basics – the voiced “th” sounds occur when the vocal cords vibrate during the production of the sound. This is in contrast to voiceless “th” sounds, which do not involve vocal cord vibration.

To begin, it’s crucial to know that an articulation disorder occurs when a person has difficulty producing speech sounds correctly. This can happen for various reasons, including structural abnormalities in the oral cavity, weak oral muscles, or delayed motor speech development. For voiced “th” sounds, the focus is primarily on the correct tongue placement and vocal cord vibration.

Correct Production

  • Tongue Placement: To produce a clear voiced “th” sound, have your student or child place the tip of their tongue between the upper and bottom teeth.
  • Airflow: The tongue should rest gently against the teeth, allowing for free airflow.
  • Vocal Cords: As the vocal cords vibrate, a continuous voiced sound should be produced.
  • Tip: During this process, they should feel a slight vibration in their throat, indicating that the vocal cords are engaged appropriately.

As I worked with clients, one technique I found helpful was practicing voiced “th” in various positions.

This post will give you over 135 words, phrases and sentences in initial, medial and final positions to practice. I suggest starting with simple words and gradually progressing to more complex phrases and sentences.

Additionally, reading books aloud that contain voiced “th” sounds can provide valuable practice and help increase awareness of how “th” sounds in everyday speech and conversations.

The Importance of Early Intervention

As speech therapists and speech-language pathologists, we understand the crucial role early intervention plays in helping children overcome speech difficulties, especially with voiced “th” sounds.

One of the main reasons is that early intervention allows us to address speech and language delays during the critical period of a child’s development. Research consistently demonstrates that early intervention can significantly improve outcomes in communication skills, social interactions, and academic success.

Working in Early Intervention

When working with children who have a hard time pronouncing voiced “th” sounds, our goal as speech therapists should be to provide specialized techniques and activities tailored to our child’s needs.

This will help them improve their speech and gain confidence in their ability to communicate. Early intervention helps us identify and address these issues as soon as possible, giving the child the best chance for success in their speech development.

Working with Families

Collaborating with family members is an essential aspect of early intervention programs for voiced “th” sounds in speech therapy. I loved working closely with parents and caregivers to create a supportive and nurturing environment that encouraged the child to practice their newfound skills.

Creating strong communication between the family and other teams such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, a special education teacher or general ed teacher will help reinforce the therapy techniques applied during sessions in many different ways and allows the child to progress more quickly.

In conclusion, early intervention is always important when working on different sounds, but especially voiced “th” sounds in speech therapy.

Methods for Teaching Voiced ‘Th’ Words

  • Mouth Position

The first step in teaching voiced ‘th’ words is to ensure the proper mouth position.

To avoid speech errors, start by helping the child:

  • Tongue: place their tongue between the upper and lower front teeth while making the voiced th sound.
  • Tongue Tip: The tongue tip should be just visible or approach the inner surface of the upper front teeth.
  • Tip: I always reminded my students that the difference between voiceless and voiced th is the vibration they feel in their vocal cords.

Word lists are a valuable tool when teaching voiced ‘th’ words, and so I have created a list of 135 ‘th’ words at the word, phrase and sentence level.

You can also encourage your student or child to go through this list of words and practice reading or repeating the words aloud, while focusing on the correct pronunciation of the “th” sound.

  • Fun Activities

Playing games and using activities in our speech therapy sessions is a great way to engage children and make learning fun.

Below in this post, we have curated a list of fun and free resources to use with your students and child to practice the target sound “th” in different ways!

We have resource types for home practice, early intervention, older students, independent work etc.

Differentiating Between Voiced and Voiceless ‘Th’ Sounds

As a speech-language pathologist, I learned quickly how important it is to understand the different speech sounds between voiced and voiceless “th”.

The different sounds can create some confusion, but our students will be able to master their target sound and improve their speech and pronunciation with the guidance from our speech therapy sessions.

Voiced ‘th’ sounds occur when the voice box is turned on during pronunciation.

They often appear in function words, such as “this,” “that,” “then,” and “there.”

Voiceless TH

In contrast, voiceless ‘th’ sounds happen when your voice box is turned off.

One way to differentiate between these sounds is by placing your fingers gently on your throat while pronouncing various ‘th’ words. You’ll feel vibrations in your throat while producing the voiced ‘th’ sound and no vibrations for the voiceless ‘th’ sound.

Voiced vs Voiceless TH

The only difference between these two sounds is the use of vocal cords.

In both cases, you must place your tongue slightly between your teeth and blow air. To better understand the distinction, use these examples of different words with voiced and voiceless ‘th’ sounds.

Some examples of voiced ‘th’ words are “then,” “these,” and “though,” while voiceless ‘th’ words are “think,” “thirteen,” and “thumb.”

Word Positions: Voiced TH Words Speech Therapy

Practicing at initial, medial and final levels is a great way to help improve an articulation disorder and achieve clearer speech.

To help our clients improve their speech, we should work with them on target words in all positions. This enables them to practice the correct pronunciation of the voiced TH sound no matter where it appears in a word.

Initial Position of Words

The initial position of words refers to when the TH sound is at the beginning of a word, such as “that” or “this”.

Medial Position of Words

Medial position refers to when the TH sound appears in the middle of a word, such as “father”, “another”, and “leather”.

Final Positions of Words

Final positions of words, on the other hand, occur when the TH sound is at the end of a word, like in “bathe” or “breathe”. This position can be challenging for some clients as it requires sustaining the TH sound through the end of the word.

You can highlight the terms by the frequency with which they occur in the written English language using the menu below. The frequency data is extracted from the English Wikipedia corpus, and updated regularly. If you just care about the words' direct semantic similarity to speech, then there's probably no need for this.

There are already a bunch of websites on the net that help you find synonyms for various words, but only a handful that help you find related , or even loosely associated words. So although you might see some synonyms of speech in the list below, many of the words below will have other relationships with speech - you could see a word with the exact opposite meaning in the word list, for example. So it's the sort of list that would be useful for helping you build a speech vocabulary list, or just a general speech word list for whatever purpose, but it's not necessarily going to be useful if you're looking for words that mean the same thing as speech (though it still might be handy for that).

If you're looking for names related to speech (e.g. business names, or pet names), this page might help you come up with ideas. The results below obviously aren't all going to be applicable for the actual name of your pet/blog/startup/etc., but hopefully they get your mind working and help you see the links between various concepts. If your pet/blog/etc. has something to do with speech, then it's obviously a good idea to use concepts or words to do with speech.

If you don't find what you're looking for in the list below, or if there's some sort of bug and it's not displaying speech related words, please send me feedback using this page. Thanks for using the site - I hope it is useful to you! 🐉
