Health and social care personal statement example.

Due to previous experiences of working with a range of people in the care sector I believe that throughout my time on various work placements with people who have disabilities and difficulties in communicating, along with the experiences gained throughout my studies, my wish to pursue a career in the care profession has grown.

To further my interest in working with and around people I completed a course in childcare. Throughout this course I was able to gain valuable experience of working with special needs children. While this was very challenging I also found it an extremely rewarding and enjoyable experience.

To further my knowledge and passion for working with people I took a health and social care advanced course and took a weeks experience in a day centre that involves working with people who suffer from difficulties in communicating and having disabilities.

This again helped to broaden my understanding of working with people and also how to deal with children and adults with disabilities. Within my spare time I have researched the job role and requirements for health promotion to find out what is involved.

To build upon these interests further, I am taking up a one week work experience within the health field. I will be spending the first week in a care home focusing on helping elderly people that suffer from dementia and my second week assisting a health promoter to experience a more professional job role in health care. I am looking forward to this valuable experience as it will further consolidate my desire to study health and social care.

I currently work as a sales assistant which has given me a valuable experience of working with people and how to assist their needs in any way possible. During this time I am developing effective communication skills and good working relationships.

In addition to this it is also helping me to show how committed I am to my responsibilities as well as demonstrating good organisation skills. Having to juggle work and school as well as social activities this also shows that I am developing my time keeping skills to make myself more committed and more punctual.

During my first year of sixth form I helped to raise money for the McMillan Cancer trust charity. I also found this very rewarding as I was helping others that were in need, just like during my work placements. I often play sports after sixth form with my friends; this has helped me to develop extra skills in working well in a team.

In addition I have completed voluntary work with a year six class to increase my knowledge of working with young people, another activity that I very much enjoyed and found extremely rewarding. To further my interest in working with people I have recently volunteered to do a level 3 v-volunteering in my spare time, the certificate itself is an accreditation form Newcastle University.

During my spare time I mainly like to dance and sing. I find this is a good way to express myself in addition to help me keep fit. I also attend the gym often to also help keep me fit I also like to attend various different events and take advantage of any activities that I am offered whether it is through school or outside of school.

This helps to increase my confidence and also helps me to meet new people. I feel that university is definitely the right path for me. I am always working extremely hard to achieve the best I can, a feat which I intend to carry on throughout my university years.

I feel I have the necessary skills needed to enjoy university to the full and also be successful in future years. In addition I would also like to go to university to help develop my skills even further so I can gain a good job in the health and social care sector which is always my main interest.

Whether applying for a summer internship, a professional development opportunity, such as a Fulbright, an executive MBA program, or a senior leadership development course, a personal statement threads the ideas of your CV, and is longer and has a different tone and purpose than a traditional cover letter. A few adjustments to your personal statement can get your application noticed by the reviewer.

  • Make sure you’re writing what they want to hear. Most organizations that offer a fellowship or internship are using the experience as a pipeline: It’s smart to spend 10 weeks and $15,000 on someone before committing five years and $300,000. Rarely are the organizations being charitable or altruistic, so align your stated goals with theirs
  • Know when to bury the lead, and when to get to the point. It’s hard to paint a picture and explain your motivations in 200 words, but if you have two pages, give the reader a story arc or ease into your point by setting the scene.
  • Recognize that the reviewer will be reading your statement subjectively, meaning you’re being assessed on unknowable criteria. Most people on evaluation committees are reading for whether or not you’re interesting. Stated differently, do they want to go out to dinner with you to hear more? Write it so that the person reading it wants to hear more.
  • Address the elephant in the room (if there is one). Maybe your grades weren’t great in core courses, or perhaps you’ve never worked in the field you’re applying to. Make sure to address the deficiency rather than hoping the reader ignores it because they won’t. A few sentences suffice. Deficiencies do not need to be the cornerstone of the application.

At multiple points in your life, you will need to take action to transition from where you are to where you want to be. This process is layered and time-consuming, and getting yourself to stand out among the masses is an arduous but not impossible task. Having a polished resume that explains what you’ve done is the common first step. But, when an application asks for it, a personal statement can add color and depth to your list of accomplishments. It moves you from a one-dimensional indistinguishable candidate to someone with drive, interest, and nuance.

If you’re applying for your first job in social care and don’t know where to start, this article will help. We break down the three essential parts of a personal statement and explain how the experience you do have can be made relevant.

Before you write this section, look back at everything you’ve done in your life.

You will have gained skills and experience from your jobs and school that you might not have ever thought about before.

In order to identify skills you didn’t think you had achieved, look back on different situations and analyse the contribution you made.

For example, say you used to volunteer to look after an elderly relative in their own home by helping them get dressed and undertake every day tasks such as washing up or cooking.

From this experience you will have learnt how to communicate in a respectful way with an individual that is relying on your assistance in order to maintain their independence and wellbeing, to maintain their dignity throughout, and to carry out person-centered care.

You may not have realised you were doing it, but by simply taking into account the needs of that person and their personal preferences, you are beginning to provide person-centered care.

Those are key skills when working in social care, and excellent communication skills are vital in every social care job .

Use the person specification to write a list of the skills deemed essential for the role, and those that are desirable. Then write an example of a time when you demonstrated each skill in a different environment, preferably using some examples from education, employment and voluntary work.

For example, if the person specification calls for someone who can work well in a team with good communication skills and commitment, you need to look back on all the experience you do have and draw out an example that shows how well you worked within a team, how your excellent communication skills contributed to you performance, and your commitment to see that situation through to conclusion.

Be succinct.

How you expect the role to develop, and your ambitions for the future

Now the recruiter is familiar with who you are and what experience you have, you can talk a little about what you expect from the role, how it will help you develop and what you anticipate going on to do in the future.

This section is not just to gain a clearer picture of your ambitions, but also to see how committed you are to working in social care.

In order to show that you are truly committed to a career in social care, you should have an idea of how the experience you will gain should you be offered the job can influence your social care career.

You could go on to be a senior care assistant, support worker or a domiciliary team leader.

You could also go on to university to train to become a registered nurse or social worker.

How to write a great carer profile? Rest assured, it’s not hard when you know the basics. INTRODUCTION

Three word phrases are a good introduction for a carer profile - but they don’t work on their own. You need to give them meaning with short examples. Start by saying how many years experience you have as a carer. 

PROFILE 1: “I have 7 years experience working in the care industry and have developed a compassionate approach. I work hard to get to know my clients, so I can help them enjoy their interests and hobbies. 

PROFILE 2: “I have more than 10 years experience as a carer. I enjoy listening to older people, I am a very patient person and am always happy to work at my clients pace, following their lead. 

PROFILE 3: “I have worked as a carer for 9 years now and work very efficiently. I enjoy my job and like talking with clients as I perform my duties. 

EXPERIENCES

Next, you need to tell clients what areas of care you can perform. It’s important to be honest so you find the right client. 

Some areas to consider are:

Conditions specialism (dementia, autism, stroke, children) 

Skills (grooming, cooking, driving)

Types of care (hourly, overnight, live-in, respite)

PROFILE 1: “I have worked with people with dementia, chronic conditions and I have provided end of life care. Recently, I provided care for stroke rehabilitation including speech and language therapy. I also have experience of anxiety and depression care.”

PROFILE 2: “I have worked in end of life care for many years, helping to make clients comfortable at home as a live in carer. I work well with other palliative care team members, such as doctors, and also with supporting family members with respite care.”

PROFILE 3: “I am experienced in personal grooming and I enjoy helping clients look their best. I can assist with hygiene, toileting, eating, cooking, cleaning and any administrative tasks which need support. I have a full clean driving license and enjoy taking clients out to meet friends.”  

What made you become a carer? Do you have experiences outside of care which are interesting or relevant? A short answer can give clients a reason to believe you are the best. 

PROFILE 1: “Before becoming a carer, I worked as a primary teacher for 20 years, I enjoyed the experience of working with children.”

PROFILE 2: “I became a carer while looking after my partner. When he died, I decided to carry on, working as a live-in carer to support people with end of life needs.”

PROFILE 3: “I love looking after other people, when my children left home, I decided to become a carer and continue what I’m good at.”

Care is about the relationships we create. Clients often want to know if they share interests or hobbies - this can create a good connection with a new carer. 

PROFILE 1: “I love reading, especially crime fiction novels. I am part of my local church and help to run the childrens activities. Last year, I got a Scottish terrier puppy called ‘Bobby’ and I love taking him on long walks.”

PROFILE 2: “I am a good cook! It’s a big part of my life and I love trying out new recipes. I can bake well and once won a competition for my pineapple turnover cake.”

PROFILE 3: “I’m passionate about sport - both watching and playing. I’m a Manchester United fan and play 5 a side every week with my friends.”

A goodbye, could turn into a hello. Encourage clients to contact you by keeping your sign off brief, polite and friendly.

I have displayed commitment in my current position by working extra shifts, covering sickness, attending courses and training during annual leave and team meetings on days off. In my own time I have implemented plans and games for the service users to use. I pride myself on being willing to go above and beyond what is expected of me. Within a few weeks of working at my current job I had established myself amongst the staff and service users and have formed lasting friendships and bonds as a result of this.

I am a volunteer drama teacher at Club 2000 (a weekly club for adults with learning disabilities, with over one hundred and fifty members attending) and I have used this role to create shows and performances. In [date] I put on a talent show with the members of Club 2000, which had over two hundred and fifty attendees.

I believe I am supportive as opposed to judgmental, I understand views and opinions may vary and would never try and impose my views upon others.

Whilst working and volunteering with adults with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour, I have been in a number of confrontational situations where clients have become verbally or physically aggressive. From this I have learnt how to work with supporting staff, how to asses the situation, how to work out the cause of the behaviour and how to resolve it.

I always volunteer to undertake additional (or non-compulsory) training if it is offered to me. I am committed to developing my knowledge and skills through both practical work and coursework.

I developed two games for our service users to use. One ‘The Banking Game’ helps them understand their money, how to save, where it comes from and how to take charge of their spending. The second ‘The Recruitment Game’ (loosely based around Charades) It is a scripted game for staff involvement where the service users learn to have a hand in the recruitment of staff.

I find myself using downtime (when all set tasks are completed) as a good time to work on other projects. I think this shows initiative. I created a ‘Pet Care Plan’ during downtime, as we have a number of animals in the house I currently work in. I am also a key worker, and part of my responsibility is updating care plans, and introducing new procedures to the care plans. I enjoy this aspect greatly as I find it very rewarding, seeing plans in action and seeing how and if they work.

I think I am a reliable, supportive, competent and caring person. I believe it would be more rewarding working in children’s services as I can help to promote independence and give support and guidance from an empathic point of view.

Florida sheriff deputies burst into wrong apartment and fatally shot U.S. airman, attorney says

Deputies responding to a disturbance call at a Florida apartment complex burst into the wrong unit and fatally shot a Black U.S. Air Force airman  who was home alone when they saw he was armed with a gun, an attorney for the man's family said Wednesday.

Senior Airman Roger Fortson , 23, who was based at the Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Field, was at his home at Chez Elan Apartments, around five miles from the air base, when he was killed. 

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump said in a statement that Fortson was on a Facetime call with a woman at the time of the encounter.

According to Crump, the woman, whom Crump didn't identify, said Fortson was alone in his apartment when he heard a knock at the door. He asked who was there but didn't get a response. A few minutes later, there was a very aggressive knock on the door, Crump said in a statement, but Fortson didn't see anyone when he looked out the peephole.

The woman said Fortson was concerned and went to retrieve his gun, which Crump said was legally owned.

As Fortson walked back through his living room, deputies burst through the door, saw that Fortson was armed and shot him six times, according to Crump's statement. Fortson was on the ground, saying, "I can't breathe," after he was shot, Crump said.

Fortson died at a hospital, officials said. The deputy involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

The woman said Fortson wasn't causing a disturbance during their Facetime call and believes that the deputies must have had the wrong apartment, Crump's statement said.

"The circumstances surrounding Roger's death raise serious questions that demand immediate answers from authorities, especially considering the alarming witness statement that the police entered the wrong apartment," Crump said in the statement.

"We are calling for transparency in the investigation into Roger's death and the immediate release of body cam video to the family," Crump said. "His family and the public deserve to know what occurred in the moments leading up to this tragedy."

Crump is a nationally known attorney based in Tallahassee, Florida. He has been involved in multiple high-profile law enforcement shooting cases involving Black people, including those of Ahmaud Arbery, Trayvon Martin, Breonna Taylor, Tyre Nichols and George Floyd.

Crump and Fortson's family plan to speak at a news conference in Fort Walton Beach on Thursday morning.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office said in a statement last week that a deputy responding to a call of a disturbance in progress at the apartment complex reacted in self-defense after encountering an armed man. The office did not offer details on what kind of disturbance deputies were responding to or who called them.

Officials said earlier this week that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the local State Attorney's Office will investigate the shooting.

FDLE spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger told The Associated Press on Wednesday that it is highly unlikely the agency will have any further comment until the investigation is complete.

Okaloosa County Sheriff Eric Aden said Wednesday in a statement, "All of us at the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office are saddened about the fatal officer involved shooting over the weekend." 

Aden said that he immediately placed the deputy on administrative leave and has asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) to conduct the investigation that is required in such incidents. The State Attorney's Office will also conduct an independent review.

"At this time, we humbly ask for our community's patience as we work to understand the facts that resulted in this tragic event," the sheriff said. 

Fortson was assigned to the 4th Special Operations Squadron as a special missions aviator, where one of his roles as a member of the squadron's AC-130J Ghostrider aircrew was to load the gunship's 30mm and 105mm cannons during missions.

Fort Walton Beach is between Panama City Beach and Pensacola in the Florida Panhandle.

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Mental Health Week:

“Today, we mark the beginning of  Mental Health Week , a time to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and taking frequent, regular, and quality care. Because mental health is health. 

“We’re making sure that all Canadians have access to the mental health care they need, no matter where they live or what they do. That means making sure that mental health is a full and equal part of our health care system. 

“Over the past year, we have reached agreements with all provinces and territories to strengthen Canada’s universal public health care system, including funding for mental health care. These agreements are delivering $25 billion in new funding to provinces and territories over the next decade to improve health care for Canadians. We’re also investing $2.4 billion to help provinces and territories bolster mental health and substance use services so that help gets to those who need it – quickly and effectively. And last fall, we improved access to suicide prevention supports by launching the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline – available to Canadians wherever and whenever it’s needed.

“Budget 2024 announced a suite of new investments aimed at improving mental health care for Canadians, including the creation of a new  Youth Mental Health Fund . The Fund will help support community health organizations that provide mental health care to young Canadians. It will also equip these organizations with the tools and resources they need to refer youth to other mental health services in their communities. Because when we invest in our youth and their mental health, we also invest in helping them reach their full potential.

“We are also taking steps to improve mental health care in underserved communities, including Indigenous communities. Indigenous Peoples are disproportionately impacted by mental health challenges, with many facing significantly higher barriers to accessing the mental health care and supports they need. That’s why Budget 2024 includes supports that provide continued access to mental health services for Indigenous Peoples, including approaches to mental health that are culturally appropriate for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis. 

“This year’s Mental Health Week theme, #CompassionConnects, calls on us to be kind to others and to ourselves. It can be as easy as checking in on a friend, being open and patient with others, or accepting help when we need it. We all have a part to play in ending the stigma around mental health challenges. And by working together to create a society and mental health care system that are rooted in compassion, we will build a better future for all Canadians.”

'I want him to be held accountable': Daniels says she 'hates' Trump

Then came Trump attorney Susan Necheles’ questions on Stormy Daniels’ view on Trump.

“Am I correct in that you hate President Trump?” Yes.

“And you want him to go to jail?”

I want him to be held accountable.

“Part of the reason you hate him is because he won a legal case against you, and you owe him today, over half a million dollars, right?” Necheles said.

“He didn’t win the case – he won attorneys fees.

“So you agree with me, he won the case and he was awarded over half a million dollars in legal fees?” Correct.

Closing summary

Donald Trump ’s criminal trial entered a new stage on Tuesday with testimony from Stormy Daniels, the adult film star at the center of his hush-money scandal. Daniels testified for nearly four hours today, and is expected to return to the stand on Thursday.

Here’s a recap of what happened today:

Daniels testified that she and Trump had a sexual liaison in 2006 that left her nervous and ashamed. Prosecutors allege that in 2015, Trump, his then lawyer Michael Cohen and tabloid honcho David Pecker plotted to bury stories that could thwart his Republican presidential bid. Cohen allegedly shuttled a $130,000 hush-money payment to Daniels less than two weeks before the 2016 presidential election, to keep her from going public about her claimed sexual liaison with Trump.

Daniels said she had met Trump at a celebrity golf match in Lake Tahoe, and that she had gone to his hotel room under the belief that they would be getting dinner after meeting there. Per instructions from Trump’s bodyguard, Keith Schiller, she arrived at his penthouse to find Trump wearing “silk or satin pyjamas” and she asked him to change.

Daniels said Trump repeatedly grilled Daniels on her time in the adult industry, including: “What about testing? Do you worry about STDs?” He asked whether she had been tested. She later testified that Trump did not use a condom during their sexual encounter.

Daniels said there was a brief discussion of Trump’s wife, Melania Trump, during which he said they slept in separate rooms. She also said he compared her to his daughter, Ivanka Trump: “You remind me of my daughter. She is smart and blonde and beautiful and people underestimate her as well.” She said that during their conversation, Trump dangled the idea of putting her on his TV show The Apprentice.

Daniels said she used the restroom and when she exited, she saw Trump on the bed in his boxers and a T-shirt. “I just thought: oh my God, what did I misread to get here?” She said, comparing it to a “jump scare”. “The intention is pretty clear if someone’s stripped down to their underwear and on the bed.” She said it suddenly felt like the room was spinning, like blood was draining from her hands and feet.

Daniels said that she tried to make a joke and leave, but Trump stood up between her and the door. She testified that Trump told her “I thought you were serious about what you wanted, if you want to get out of that trailer park.”

Daniels said she “blacked out” during her “brief” sexual encounter with Trump. “ I was not drunk I was not drugged … I just don’t remember,” she told the jury. She said she “was staring up at the ceiling and didn’t know how I got there”. She testified that she remembered her hands were “shaking so hard that I was having a hard time getting dressed” afterwards, and that Trump told her: “Let’s get together again, honey bunch!”

After a lunch break, Trump’s team demanded a mistrial over what they said were prejudicial and irrelevant comments. “There’s no way to unring that bell, in our view,” defense lawyer Todd Blanche said. “Aside from pure embarrassment,” Blanche told Merchan, these details did nothing but “inflame the jury”. The judge rejected the request and said defense lawyers should have raised more objections during the testimony.

Daniels said that in 2011, a man approached her at a Las Vegas car park and threatened her against coming forward . Her former attorney, Michael Avenatti , publicized a sketch of the man, and then filed a defamation suit after Trump denied involvement. Daniels said she thought a defamation claim was “risky” and “not worth it”, but that Avenatti filed it without her permission. The case was thrown out, in Trump’s favor.

Under cross examination, Daniels acknowledged that she “hates” Trump. “ I want him to be held accountable,” she told the jury. Daniels also admitted she has chosen not to pay about $560,000 in legal fees that she owes to Trump after she filed and lost a defamation suit against him.

The jury heard from another witness in the morning: Sally Franklin , an executive at Penguin Random House. The prosecution asked her to read excerpts from Trump’s books including Trump: How to Get Rich and Trump: Think Like a Billionaire.

Judge indefinitely postpones Trump's classified documents trial date

The US district judge Aileen Cannon has indefinitely postponed Donald Trump ’s trial date in Florida in the case where the former president is charged with retaining national security documents.

Trump says today was a 'very revealing day'

Donald Trump, speaking to the media after court adjourned for the day, described today’s court proceedings as a “very big day”.

Trump, standing next to his attorney Todd Blanche, said:

So this was a very big day, a very revealing day as you see their case is totally falling apart. They have nothing on books and records and even something that should bear very little relationship to the case. It’s just a disaster for the DA, the Soros-backed disaster. This whole case is a disaster.

Trump attorney Susan Necheles is asking about the alleged 2011 threat to keep quiet about the former president , once again to insist that it didn’t actually happen.

So you decided in 2016, well, I’m going to sell my story, you weren’t afraid?

Stormy Daniels told Necheles that she was “very different” and more brave, in 2016 than in 2011.

Necheles pressed on with her suggestion that Daniels was trying to shake down Trump.

You were looking to extort money from President Trump, right?

“False”, Daniels said. “Well, that’s what you did, right?” “False!”

Donald Trump has returned to court following a brief break. His son, Eric, has sat back down in the front row, once again alongside Alina Habba .

Stormy Daniels has returned to the stand.

During the break, Trump was asked how today’s proceedings were going. “Very well”, he replied, per pool.

Trump attorney Susan Necheles is grilling Stormy Daniels on why she didn’t come forward with the sex claim for 10 years.

Daniels shot back that she told multiple people – including friends – and had effectively told the story during a radio show interview around 2007.

Necheles asked if she thought that Michael Cohen had sent a man to threaten Daniels in 2011; Daniels previously believed that Cohen was responsible for the threat.

Daniels earlier told the jury about being approached by a man in the parking lot of a shopping center in Las Vegas in June 2011 who she said “threatened me not to continue to tell my story”.

The prosecution asked: “But now you and Michael Cohen are buddies, right?” Daniels replied:

I wouldn’t say buddies.

But you’ve been on his podcast a couple of times? “For him to apologize.”

Trump attorney Susan Necheles is asking Stormy Daniels about whether she considered getting high-profile women’s rights attorney Gloria Allred to represent her in 2011.

You told Gloria Allred that you did not have sex with President Trump, didn’t you?

Daniels denied this. “I told her I did.”

Necheles’ line of questioning stems from Daniels’ book, Full Disclosure, where she describes speaking with Allred on the phone – but not telling her about sex with Trump. Daniels said:

I did not tell her all these sex details, I did not trust her.

“You’re making this up as you sit there, right?” Necheles pressed. “No.”

On cross, Trump attorney Susan Necheles is doggedly trying to convey that Stormy Daniels’ presence in court is a financially motivated personal vendetta.

Not only does Daniels hate Donald Trump , but she doesn’t want to pay him money owed to him.

Necheles also pointed to one of Daniels’ tweets, where she compares him to an orange excrement.

“They asked me why? I don’t think they asked me why,” answered Stormy Daniels, who seemed irked.
