ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY CROSSWORD

All your puzzles are accessible from your 'My Puzzles' page, which you can access using the navigation bar at the top when you are logged in.

Be sure to log in using the same email address you used when you created your puzzle.

There is a 'Make Printable' button on the top left of your puzzle that will let you sign up for a plan or purchase a single puzzle.

Once paid, that button will turn into a 'Preview + Publish' button that will put your puzzle in a format that can be printed or solved online.

Once you publish your puzzle, you can click the print icon or use your browser’s print function.

First make sure you’ve published your puzzle. See the 'How do I print?' section above for more information.

99% of other printing issues have to do with printer settings. Instead of trying to fiddle with printer settings, which can be time-consuming and frustrating, there are a couple workarounds you can try.

You can try printing from a different browser, since different browsers have different default print settings. Alternately, you can try saving as a PDF (next to the print icon) and print that.

We invested in building a number of premium features that free sites are unable to offer: the ability to automatically or manually add words to your puzzle, save-as-you-go puzzle editing, the ability to access your puzzles from any computer, an uncluttered and ad-free interface, the ability for friends and colleagues to solve your puzzles online, and quick responsiveness to reported issues.

My Crossword Maker is the lowest-price service we've found that provides these features, and is designed for people who are not satisfied with what free sites are able to provide.

We’re sorry you thought My Crossword Maker was free, that must have been frustrating.

We’re constantly trying to provide a clear and straightforward user experience, and we’re not trying to hide the price: on the page where you make your puzzle, the price is listed in the overview in the top left (before you log in), below the 'Make Printable' button (after you log in), in the FAQ below the grid, and also in the tour.

Unfortunately, we have limited control over how we show up in Google and on other sites, so if they show My Crossword Maker when someone searches for a free site we can’t do anything about that.

First check whether you used a different email address to create your account. Your login email is the email address where you received a welcome email from us.

Alternately, it’s possible there was a typo in your email when you created your account. If so, report an issue below and provide the name and last four digits on the card you used when you signed up. We’ll use this information to track down your account.

If you are a member of My Crossword Maker and are still being asked for payment, then you may have inadvertently created a second account.

Your paid account will have the email address where you received an email confirming your subscription.

If you never received such an email, or are still unable to find your paid account, report an issue below and provide the name and last four digits on the card you used when you signed up. We’ll use this information to track down your account.

For security a human can’t see or reset your password, so read the below information carefully.

If you haven’t gotten the password reset email, check your spam folder, be sure you’re checking the email account that the email was sent to, and be aware that some school email systems block emails from non-school email addresses.

If you have the password reset email but the password isn’t accepted, be sure you are using the most recent password reset email: sometimes people will hit the button twice, and only the second password will work.

Be sure if you copy-paste the password not to get a space on the outside, or if you're typing it keep in mind that it's case-sensitive and that a lower-case L can look like the number 1, etc.

You can cancel your subscription from your 'My Account' page, which you can access using the navigation bar at the top when you are logged in.

Support representatives cannot cancel a subscription on your behalf.

When you hit the 'Arrange' button, our algorithm will try to arrange all your words on the grid, and will move words around to try to fit the most words.

This will get all the words on the grid about 90% of the time, depending on the word list. For the other 10%, you will get an alert explaining that the words that did not fit were added to the scratchpad.

Big puzzles won’t always print on one page — the clues and grid are the smallest we could make them while keeping them readable for everyone.

That said, different browsers print in slightly different ways, so you could try using 'print preview' using a different browser (or try the PDF button) to see if you like how that looks better.

We generally respond to all reported issues in about a day. If it’s been a few days and you haven’t heard back from us, it’s possible we sent an email that didn’t reach you.

Check your spam folder, and be aware that some school email systems block emails from non-school email addresses. Try providing a different email address if you think our emails to you are being blocked.

Voices Below Sopranos

Judy Bowers makes her New York Times debut.

David Chase, the writer of HBO’s “The Sopranos,” sits next to James Gandolfini, who starred in the series.

By Sam Corbin

Jump to: Today’s Theme | Tricky Clues

TUESDAY PUZZLE — It’s been over 75 years since the first New York Times Crossword , and language has significantly evolved. And yet there has been little change in much of the field’s crosswordese — i.e. vowel-heavy words that frequently appear in crosswords, but hardly ever apply in everyday speech.

We are still just as likely as ever, for example, to encounter H.G. Wells’s “Eloi,” from a novel he wrote in 1895. And though the era of the Oldsmobile has ended, puzzles have yet to stop featuring its final model, the “Alero.” I occasionally explain such terms in Tricky Clues, especially if I’ve just learned them, but improving one’s solving skills is largely a matter of learning these well-worn words by rote.

That’s why I have to hand it to Judy Bowers, the constructor of today’s crossword. In this, her New York Times debut, she has managed to do something remarkable with a different constraint — without sacrificing flashes of relevance.

Today’s Theme

Read carefully, because the revealer at 54-Down describes just about every part of the crossword in its hint to unlocking today’s theme. We have to identify the “Number of letters in every word of the answers to the starred clues.” Simply put, we’re looking for a number — and since “Plethora” (57A) solves to a fairly straightforward SLEW, we can assume via crossings that it’s the number TWO.

Maybe the above number was all you needed for your “aha!” moment. But if you’re like me, you needed more information. And while “Follow our lead!” (32A) is a straightforward DO AS WE DO, other expressions in the theme aren’t so common and may require more crossings to solve: 37-Across, for example, solves to HI MA, I’M UP (its clue being “Morning, mother!”).

Regardless, two phrases are all it takes to make sense of our revealer. Now we can see that both 32- and 37-Across are strictly made up of TWO-letter words, and it’s game on. The question “Can this be a gift from all of us?” is OK IF WE GO IN ON IT? Asking “Well, do I decide or not?” (23A) solves to SO IS IT UP TO ME? And here’s my personal favorite: “Yuck! I’ve dated him before. Swipe left!” becomes OH NO, EW, HE IS MY EX.

Tricky Clues

14A. In question-marked clues, it’s often helpful to look at the constructor’s choice of punctuation: “Standing at 6-5, say?” uses a hyphen instead of an apostrophe, not to refer to someone’s height, but to being UP ONE on a scoreboard.

43A. The figurative sense of “Fleeces,” which is CONS, emerged soon after the literal one. In the early 16th century, it meant to strip a sheep of its fleece; the verb’s figurative sense — to strip a person of his or her money — appeared a few decades later .

55A. The first entry for a “$5 bill, slangily” is mostly intuitive, since it uses the name of the president who appears on the bill. This one is harder: FIN comes from 1920s slang and is related to “finif ,” the Yiddish word for the number five .

8D. “Beginning to form?” sounds like an adjective — nascent, for example — but the question mark tells us not to be so hasty. Here, “beginning” means “prefix,” and the answer is UNI.

10D. One who “Announces the big reveal in a magic act” SAYS PRESTO. Equally worthy of oohs and aahs is the fact that this entry is a Times Crossword debut.

42D. It’s been nearly a decade since Times solvers last encountered this word for “rebel”: UPRISE. One usually sees it in its noun form, as in an uprising.

48D. The “modern portmanteau” this clue refers to was new to me, but it has been around for years . A screenAGER blends screen and teenager to refer to tech-savvy younger generations (sometimes pejoratively).

Random Thoughts & Interesting Things

  • CLUE (7A: Board game with Miss Scarlet) I enjoy playing many different board games, but if pressed to choose one game that is my favorite of all time, it would be CLUE . Nothing against Miss Scarlet, but Professor Plum is my favorite character. When I was young, Professor Plum was my favorite for the strategic reason that his starting space on the game board was the closet to the door of a room. Now when I play CLUE , I generally play the CLUE Master Detective edition, which was released in 1988 and features more rooms, more suspects, and more weapons. In this version, all characters begin in the same space. I still choose to play as Professor Plum.

NPR suspends veteran editor as it grapples with his public criticism

NPR suspended senior editor Uri Berliner for five days without pay after he wrote an essay accusing the network of losing the public's trust and appeared on a podcast to explain his argument. Uri Berliner hide caption

NPR suspended senior editor Uri Berliner for five days without pay after he wrote an essay accusing the network of losing the public's trust and appeared on a podcast to explain his argument.

NPR has formally punished Uri Berliner, the senior editor who publicly argued a week ago that the network had "lost America's trust" by approaching news stories with a rigidly progressive mindset.

Berliner's five-day suspension without pay, which began last Friday, has not been previously reported.

Yet the public radio network is grappling in other ways with the fallout from Berliner's essay for the online news site The Free Press . It angered many of his colleagues, led NPR leaders to announce monthly internal reviews of the network's coverage, and gave fresh ammunition to conservative and partisan Republican critics of NPR, including former President Donald Trump.

Conservative activist Christopher Rufo is among those now targeting NPR's new chief executive, Katherine Maher, for messages she posted to social media years before joining the network. Among others, those posts include a 2020 tweet that called Trump racist and another that appeared to minimize rioting during social justice protests that year. Maher took the job at NPR last month — her first at a news organization .

In a statement Monday about the messages she had posted, Maher praised the integrity of NPR's journalists and underscored the independence of their reporting.

"In America everyone is entitled to free speech as a private citizen," she said. "What matters is NPR's work and my commitment as its CEO: public service, editorial independence, and the mission to serve all of the American public. NPR is independent, beholden to no party, and without commercial interests."

The network noted that "the CEO is not involved in editorial decisions."

In an interview with me later on Monday, Berliner said the social media posts demonstrated Maher was all but incapable of being the person best poised to direct the organization.

"We're looking for a leader right now who's going to be unifying and bring more people into the tent and have a broader perspective on, sort of, what America is all about," Berliner said. "And this seems to be the opposite of that."

Conservative critics of NPR are now targeting its new chief executive, Katherine Maher, for messages she posted to social media years before joining the public radio network last month.

He said that he tried repeatedly to make his concerns over NPR's coverage known to news leaders and to Maher's predecessor as chief executive before publishing his essay.

Berliner has singled out coverage of several issues dominating the 2020s for criticism, including trans rights, the Israel-Hamas war and COVID. Berliner says he sees the same problems at other news organizations, but argues NPR, as a mission-driven institution, has a greater obligation to fairness.

"I love NPR and feel it's a national trust," Berliner says. "We have great journalists here. If they shed their opinions and did the great journalism they're capable of, this would be a much more interesting and fulfilling organization for our listeners."

A "final warning"

The circumstances surrounding the interview were singular.

Berliner provided me with a copy of the formal rebuke to review. NPR did not confirm or comment upon his suspension for this article.

In presenting Berliner's suspension Thursday afternoon, the organization told the editor he had failed to secure its approval for outside work for other news outlets, as is required of NPR journalists. It called the letter a "final warning," saying Berliner would be fired if he violated NPR's policy again. Berliner is a dues-paying member of NPR's newsroom union but says he is not appealing the punishment.

The Free Press is a site that has become a haven for journalists who believe that mainstream media outlets have become too liberal. In addition to his essay, Berliner appeared in an episode of its podcast Honestly with Bari Weiss.

A few hours after the essay appeared online, NPR chief business editor Pallavi Gogoi reminded Berliner of the requirement that he secure approval before appearing in outside press, according to a copy of the note provided by Berliner.

In its formal rebuke, NPR did not cite Berliner's appearance on Chris Cuomo's NewsNation program last Tuesday night, for which NPR gave him the green light. (NPR's chief communications officer told Berliner to focus on his own experience and not share proprietary information.) The NPR letter also did not cite his remarks to The New York Times , which ran its article mid-afternoon Thursday, shortly before the reprimand was sent. Berliner says he did not seek approval before talking with the Times .

NPR defends its journalism after senior editor says it has lost the public's trust

NPR defends its journalism after senior editor says it has lost the public's trust

Berliner says he did not get permission from NPR to speak with me for this story but that he was not worried about the consequences: "Talking to an NPR journalist and being fired for that would be extraordinary, I think."

Berliner is a member of NPR's business desk, as am I, and he has helped to edit many of my stories. He had no involvement in the preparation of this article and did not see it before it was posted publicly.

In rebuking Berliner, NPR said he had also publicly released proprietary information about audience demographics, which it considers confidential. He said those figures "were essentially marketing material. If they had been really good, they probably would have distributed them and sent them out to the world."

Feelings of anger and betrayal inside the newsroom

His essay and subsequent public remarks stirred deep anger and dismay within NPR. Colleagues contend Berliner cherry-picked examples to fit his arguments and challenge the accuracy of his accounts. They also note he did not seek comment from the journalists involved in the work he cited.

Morning Edition host Michel Martin told me some colleagues at the network share Berliner's concerns that coverage is frequently presented through an ideological or idealistic prism that can alienate listeners.

"The way to address that is through training and mentorship," says Martin, herself a veteran of nearly two decades at the network who has also reported for The Wall Street Journal and ABC News. "It's not by blowing the place up, by trashing your colleagues, in full view of people who don't really care about it anyway."

Several NPR journalists told me they are no longer willing to work with Berliner as they no longer have confidence that he will keep private their internal musings about stories as they work through coverage.

"Newsrooms run on trust," NPR political correspondent Danielle Kurtzleben tweeted last week, without mentioning Berliner by name. "If you violate everyone's trust by going to another outlet and sh--ing on your colleagues (while doing a bad job journalistically, for that matter), I don't know how you do your job now."

Berliner rejected that critique, saying nothing in his essay or subsequent remarks betrayed private observations or arguments about coverage.

Other newsrooms are also grappling with questions over news judgment and confidentiality. On Monday, New York Times Executive Editor Joseph Kahn announced to his staff that the newspaper's inquiry into who leaked internal dissent over a planned episode of its podcast The Daily to another news outlet proved inconclusive. The episode was to focus on a December report on the use of sexual assault as part of the Hamas attack on Israel in October. Audio staffers aired doubts over how well the reporting stood up to scrutiny.

"We work together with trust and collegiality everyday on everything we produce, and I have every expectation that this incident will prove to be a singular exception to an important rule," Kahn wrote to Times staffers.

At NPR, some of Berliner's colleagues have weighed in online against his claim that the network has focused on diversifying its workforce without a concomitant commitment to diversity of viewpoint. Recently retired Chief Executive John Lansing has referred to this pursuit of diversity within NPR's workforce as its " North Star ," a moral imperative and chief business strategy.

In his essay, Berliner tagged the strategy as a failure, citing the drop in NPR's broadcast audiences and its struggle to attract more Black and Latino listeners in particular.

"During most of my tenure here, an open-minded, curious culture prevailed. We were nerdy, but not knee-jerk, activist, or scolding," Berliner writes. "In recent years, however, that has changed."

Berliner writes, "For NPR, which purports to consider all things, it's devastating both for its journalism and its business model."

NPR investigative reporter Chiara Eisner wrote in a comment for this story: "Minorities do not all think the same and do not report the same. Good reporters and editors should know that by now. It's embarrassing to me as a reporter at NPR that a senior editor here missed that point in 2024."

Some colleagues drafted a letter to Maher and NPR's chief news executive, Edith Chapin, seeking greater clarity on NPR's standards for its coverage and the behavior of its journalists — clearly pointed at Berliner.

A plan for "healthy discussion"

On Friday, CEO Maher stood up for the network's mission and the journalism, taking issue with Berliner's critique, though never mentioning him by name. Among her chief issues, she said Berliner's essay offered "a criticism of our people on the basis of who we are."

Berliner took great exception to that, saying she had denigrated him. He said that he supported diversifying NPR's workforce to look more like the U.S. population at large. She did not address that in a subsequent private exchange he shared with me for this story. (An NPR spokesperson declined further comment.)

Late Monday afternoon, Chapin announced to the newsroom that Executive Editor Eva Rodriguez would lead monthly meetings to review coverage.

"Among the questions we'll ask of ourselves each month: Did we capture the diversity of this country — racial, ethnic, religious, economic, political geographic, etc — in all of its complexity and in a way that helped listeners and readers recognize themselves and their communities?" Chapin wrote in the memo. "Did we offer coverage that helped them understand — even if just a bit better — those neighbors with whom they share little in common?"

Berliner said he welcomed the announcement but would withhold judgment until those meetings played out.

In a text for this story, Chapin said such sessions had been discussed since Lansing unified the news and programming divisions under her acting leadership last year.

"Now seemed [the] time to deliver if we were going to do it," Chapin said. "Healthy discussion is something we need more of."

Disclosure: This story was reported and written by NPR Media Correspondent David Folkenflik and edited by Deputy Business Editor Emily Kopp and Managing Editor Gerry Holmes. Under NPR's protocol for reporting on itself, no NPR corporate official or news executive reviewed this story before it was posted publicly.

PEN America cancels awards ceremony amid backlash to stance on Israel-Hamas war

Following criticism of the organization’s response to the Israel-Hamas war, PEN America has canceled its annual awards ceremony recognizing outstanding literature.

Of the 61 authors and translators nominated for the prestigious awards, 28 withdrew their books from consideration ahead of the event, which was set to be held April 29 at the Town Hall in New York City. Nine of the 10 nominees for the top recognition, the PEN/Jean Stein Book Award and its $75,000 prize, withdrew from consideration.

“We greatly respect that writers have followed their consciences, whether they chose to remain as nominees in their respective categories or not,” Rosaz Shariyf, PEN America’s literary programming chief officer, said in a statement Monday. “We regret that this unprecedented situation has taken away the spotlight from the extraordinary work selected by esteemed, insightful and hard-working judges across all categories. As an organization dedicated to freedom of expression and writers, our commitment to recognizing and honoring outstanding authors and the literary community is steadfast.”

The nonprofit known for its protection of free expression in literature and its focus on human rights has come under fire for its response to the Israel-Hamas war. In an open letter signed by more than 1,400 writers and members of the literary community, including Roxane Gay and Naomi Klein, the group called the organization’s response “silent, tepid, neither-here-nor-there, self-congratulatory middle of the road.”

Signatories said the organization wasn’t living up to its mission of “protecting, platforming and amplifying those writers made most marginalized by nefarious forces,” and called for the organization to disband, should it not address the letter’s concerns.

On Oct. 10, three days after Hamas attacked Israel, PEN America released a statement that said the organization “deplores the premeditated and vicious attack launched against Israeli civilians.”

The org has since put out more than 35 statements about the conflict, many condemning the loss of life in Gaza or offering support to pro-Palestinian writers and groups on college campuses. It also created an emergency fund of $100,000 to support Palestinian writers. Many critics said the fund was too small and found fault with the organization’s call for a cease-fire in March, which came five months after the start of the war.

PEN announced Monday that “Soil,” by Camille T. Dungy, the only remaining nominee, was awarded the Stein award. Jean Stein’s estate requested that PEN America donate the prize money to the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, writing that Stein was a “passionate advocate for Palestinian rights who published, supported and celebrated Palestinian writers and visual artists.”

“While she established the PEN America award in her name to bring attention to and provide meaningful support to writers of the highest literary achievement, we know she would have respected the stance and sacrifice of the writers who have withdrawn from contention this year,” said the statement from Katrina Vanden Heuvel, Wendy Vanden Heuvel and Bill Clegg, on behalf of her estate.

Among the handful of finalists were Javier Fuentes, who won the PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Novel for “Countries of Origin.” Playwright Tony Kushner will also still be honored with the PEN/Mike Nichols Writing for Performance Award for his body of work, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Angels in America.”

PEN’s other spring events — the World Voices festivals in New York and Los Angeles, and the gala at the American Museum of Natural History — will proceed as scheduled, according to the Associated Press .
