Intelligent systems for a sustainable society

The University of Stuttgart is one of the leading technically oriented universities in Germany with global significance. Located centrally in an economically strong region with vast cultural integration, the university sees itself as a hub of university-based, extramural and industrial research. Furthermore, it takes a role as a leader in research-based teaching, focused on quality and holism. The university is dedicated to researching and strengthening the interfaces between technology, society and culture in an interdisciplinary manner, defined as the "Stuttgart Way". This means the integration of engineering, natural sciences, humanities and social sciences based on the fundamentals of cutting-edge research at a disciplinary level.

Excellent research and teaching

The University of Stuttgart implements innovative concepts in research and teaching in order to provide knowledge and strategies for a meaningful and sustainable development. It focuses on basic research that is both knowledge-oriented and application-related. To facilitate this research, the university is actively part of regional, national and international research networks.

The university is committed to the principle of unity between research and teaching. Students acquire knowledge, expertise and the power of judgement, in accordance with the guidelines of scientific research and awareness. The university fosters fascination for the sciences, supporting its students and junior researchers at all stages of their careers. It promotes independent thinking and provides an environment for responsible action. In doing so, it educates individuals into exceptional experts who think in an integrative and global manner and act responsibly in the sciences, economics and society.

A powerful region

Founded in 1829, at the beginning of the Industrial Age, the University of Stuttgart continues to prepare the way for innovation within an economically and scientifically powerful region and contributes to the economic success and prosperity of our society. This process combines the requirements of a social and cultural change, which allows an early and extensive input of social interests in research and design as well as teaching and further education.

Open-mindedness

The University of Stuttgart stands for open-mindedness, individuality and community spirit. It brings together students that are eager to learn, highly motivated employees, outstanding teachers, and excellent researchers as well as visionary thinkers and inventors. By means of its culture of integration, the university creates and conveys knowledge for shaping the future of our society.

University location

The University of Stuttgart is nestled in one of Europe’s most vibrant industrial regions. Doctoral Degree and Habilitation

Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology

You want to study for a doctorate or qualify as a professor? We care for the next generation of scientists and engineers. The information presented below supports with administrative issues associated with doctoral degree studies and habilitation.

Your route to a Doctoral Degree

Doctoral degree.

The faculty grants the following doctoral degrees:

  • Dr. rer. nat.

You can pursue your doctorate independently , or as part of an organized doctoral program in which the faculty participates. For the independent doctorate, you choose a topic of study and a professor from one of our institutes to be your mentor. Very often – but not always – this entails working on a research project in an institute, and writing your doctoral thesis on one of the topics from this project. In that case, you need to apply to the institute directly and find out whether there is an open position.

If you follow an organized doctoral program , you must apply to the program for a place and a scholarship.

GSaME     SimTech    Digital Media    Services Computing

Please refer to the Regulations for doctoral degrees   and read the university notes on Doctoral degree studies .

You have a topic and a mentor?

Then you need to draft and sign an agreement on doctoral studies  with your supervisor. The agreement regulates your supervision during your doctoral degree studies, and your training program.

You have a degree from a university outside Germany?

Then you will need the “Form for formal equivalence of degrees from universities outside Germany” . Please be aware that formal degree equivalence checking can take some time! If you want to apply to study for a PhD quickly, you must apply early and enclose the form.

Application for acceptance

Please submit your application to GRADUS. Send the application together with your CV, degree certificate, PhD supervision agreements and any other relevant documents (for more information, please contact GRADUS).

GRADUS checks that the documentation is complete and passes it on to the dean's office in Faculty 5. All dissertation projects are managed in this office and the doctoral committees are supervised there. The doctoral committee checks your application and will inform you in writing of its findings. You may be required to submit more information. The doctoral committee sits once a month during the semester. If you want to speed up proceedings, the dean's office will let you have the dates of the doctoral committee meetings.

Enrollment in doctoral studies

You must register as a doctoral student when you receive your written acceptance letter.

Submitting your dissertation and applying for admission to the examination

When you have finished writing your dissertation and have fulfilled all other necessary requirements, please hand in the dissertation at the Dean's Office in Faculty 5 (Iryna Jung, Pfaffenwaldring 47, 4th Floor, Room 4.116). In the following leaflets you will find information on size, binding, layout of title page, etc. Each doctoral committee has its own rules! A list of all other documents you need to submit with your dissertation is available in these leaflets.

You automatically apply for admission to the examination when you submit your thesis.

Submission Dr.-Ing.   Submission Dr.rer.nat.   Submission Dr. phil.

Assessment of dissertation and oral examination

Your dissertation will be assessed by study advisers. As soon as the assessors' reports have been submitted, the thesis is available for public viewing for 14 days or is circulated among a selected group of persons. At the end of this consultation period, and as long as there are no objections, an oral examination takes place. You will be required to give a public talk about the topic of your PhD thesis at the oral examination, and you will take part in a non-public oral examination. The doctoral committee will appoint examiners to the examining board for the oral test.

OralExam Dr.-Ing .   OralExam Dr.rer.nat.    OralExam Dr.phil.

Publishing the dissertation

When you have passed your oral examination you must publish your dissertation, and submit archival copies to the university library . Your principal study adviser must confirm that the printed copies match the manuscript. The process is then complete!

Publication

What about your certificate?

You will either receive your certificate by per post or you can pick it up at the dean's office. You will be notified when the certificate is printed.

Getting Started: Life as an International PhD Student

Pavan presents some of “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” from his experiences as an International PhD Student.

What do you feel at the culmination of a long and arduous journey when you reach your destination? Relief? Excitement? Elation? It was a combination of all three for me when I was finally accepted as a PhD student in the Institut für Bioverfahrenstechnik at Universität Stuttgart. All changes bring along some challenges with them, and taking the plunge into doctoral research in a new continent in a country with a radically different language, culture and overall system from what I was used to all my life was indeed a significant change, to say the least.

The entire PhD system in Europe is very different from how it is in most other places like the USA or India, and in my opinion, much better. In the USA, grad students are just students of the institute. Europe, however, respects the prior experience and training of doctoral applicants and most PhD positions particularly in the Engineering disciplines are salaried jobs. The real cherry on the cake is the kind of dual status that we have in Uni Stuttgart. As salaried researchers with a contract, we are technically employees of the university and the state government! Also, as per regulations, we are enrolled as doctoral students with GRADUS, making us students of the university. This enables us to access a plethora of benefits and concessions that come along with the student status. Of course it also means that we have to pay a semester contribution of roughly 200EUR. But the benefits recover the cost in no time.

For instance, the student ID gives access to highly subsidised food in Mensa, the student cafeteria on campus. The semester contribution also includes a Semester Ticket for public transport, which allows unlimited travel in all public transport in the entire regional VVS network. Clearly, the benefits of this dual status far outweigh the costs.

The research infrastructure here is leaps and bounds ahead of what I was used to in universities in India. My lab here is built like a full-fledged chemical processing unit with state-of-the art reactors and controls. It is the dream of any chemical engineer to have access to such facilities for research. What I find most impressive is the kind of spontaneity that is enabled by having such wonderful resources at our disposal. We have in-house technicians and engineers to help with equipment. Once, when we were setting up a pump, a small clamp in it broke. “There goes a week of work”, I thought to myself, assuming that we had to contact the manufacturer to fix it. But, lo and behold, in fifteen minutes our engineer just made the clamp from scratch in the workshop in the institute itself! The system is built to enable efficient and effective research.

I still vividly recollect the day my supervisor informed me on a video call after my interview, that he had decided to offer me the PhD position. The first thing he said was that the German bureaucracy will make you go around in circles, quite literally. A research contract at the university is only valid as long as you have a valid visa or residence permit, and the permit is valid only as long as you have a valid contract. To help one enter this vicious cycle, a hosting agreement is issued jointly by the institute and the university international office, which helps one to get the visa initially after which the cycle begins.

Navigating the highly convoluted and complex bureaucratic channels both in the governmental agencies and in the university administration is an art in itself. The university’s international office, which offers some guidance on getting started, is the only refuge international students have for getting some orientation. It took me more than a month to finally get enrolled in the university. Despite what is usually said, it is far better to begin the process before arriving in Stuttgart itself.

university of stuttgart phd students

The forces of decentralisation are again at play when it comes to the formalities with the work contract. Nobody knew why I wasn’t getting any salary for successive months. In my case for instance, there were some four other forms that I had to sign along with the contract, which I was never informed about. After multiple rounds of communication, they realised that this was the problem. One must constantly and proactively follow up each of these administrative procedures in the university for the first few months until things have been regularised.

The greatest bureaucratic challenge that an international PhD student faces, however, is with the foreigners’ office "Ausländerbehörde". With our contracts cyclically linked to our residence permits, regular interactions with the "Ausländerbehörde" is inevitable. My emails requesting an appointment for getting my residence permit went unanswered for close to three months, and there is no way to track the status of one’s query online.

It is common knowledge that the stressful, highly success-oriented, and unforgiving nature of academia brings with it a significant risk of mental health issues among graduate students and early-career researchers. I have personally lost a friend to academic depression in the past and it is in their memory that I choose to address this issue here. As international students, we are at an increased risk as we have moved far away from close friends and family to a new country with a radically different way of life.

An exacerbating factor I notice in Germany in particular is that the culture here as a whole is less social than in most other places. In India, for instance, the atmosphere in the labs among PhD students is just like among undergrads — one of good friendships and very casual and jovial. Here however, it is more like an office or a corporate workplace with students interacting only in a reserved and professional manner as colleagues rather than friends. Most people do not socialise outside of the workplace and in general keep their social life isolated and well insulated from their interactions in the institute. This is fine for locals who generally have their own independent social and family circles outside, but it takes a heavy toll on some international PhD students.

university of stuttgart phd students

A key problem most of us international students would face is, of course, the language. Among my twenty or so colleagues, only three are non-German. It therefore helps to a great extent in socialising, if one is able to at least understand German to be able to interact and contribute to general conversations. I would highly recommend every international student to learn enough German to be able to understand everyday conversations even though it is not technically required for a PhD. The international office of the University of Stuttgart offers professional help and counselling to all students who need guidance or help dealing with any problems. Studierendenwerk offers professional counselling free of charge to students, too.

To conclude on a positive note, I have thoroughly enjoyed all the new experiences that Uni Stuttgart and Germany in general have exposed me to. All the challenges I have faced only added to the adventure and ultimately inculcated a greater resilience in me, which is one of the most important traits that any PhD student should have. Stuttgart in general and the university in particular are wonderful places to be in, and Europe has given an avid traveller like me a lot of fond memories with many more remaining to look forward to!

At the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning it is possible to gain a doctoral degree in engineering (Dr.-Ing.).

Architects and urban planners tend to be a rare commodity because – unlike many other academic disciplines – proof of an academic qualification in the form of a doctoral degree is not a prerequisite for a successful career in architecture or urban planning. There are thus comparatively few doctoral researchers at our Faculty. However, interest in doctoral degree studies has grown over the past few years.

In scarcely any other subject is the spectrum of dissertation topics as broad as in architecture and urban planning. Likewise, the diversity across the Faculty's institutes is reflected in the broad spectrum of research topics and methodology of our research. There are dissertations in engineering which experimentally address issues related to building physics and structural design; dissertations on history of art and architecture which study historic buildings, architectural styles, construction techniques or master builders or matters of monument protection; and dissertations investigating architectural and planning theory , architectural sociology, building economics, building, urban and landscape ecology, design and planning methods, building studies and urban and landscape planning .

The doctoral procedure is set out in the current  Doctoral degree regulations   of the University of Stuttgart. Doctoral studies at our Faculty are also open to applicants with a university degree in a subject other than architecture and urban planning provided their chosen topic is relevant and supervised by a member of the Faculty's teaching staff. Past doctoral researchers have included civil engineers, geographers, art historians and biologists.

Non-German applicants must prove beforehand that the university degree from their home country is regarded as equivalent to that of a German university.

If you wish to enroll as a doctoral researcher, you should discuss your chosen topic with a member of the Faculty teaching staff who specializes in a field relevant to your planned area of research. You will finalize the topic of your doctoral study with your prospective supervisor and submit an application for acceptance to the Faculty as a doctoral researcher . Decisions on matters related to doctoral studies are taken by the  doctoral committee .

So far the Faculty has only admitted individual doctoral researchers and has not yet set up a research training group or graduate schools. Some institutes organize regular Doktorandenkolloquien at which doctoral researchers can present, report and discuss the progress of their work. In 2004 the Faculty introduced cross-institute discussion forums specifically for doctoral researchers whose dissertation topics are related to urban development and urban planning ( Doktorandenkolloquium Stadt ).

The participating institutes are the  Institute of Urban Planning and Design , the  Institute for Housing and Design , the   Institute of Architectural History  and the  Institute of Spatial and Regional Planning  (Faculty 2).

Region 4 NSBE members at the conference

Celebrating 50 years of the National Society of Black Engineers

Uc's nsbe chapter is one of nearly 100 in region four.

For half a century, the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) has committed to increasing the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.

In the early 1970's a group of six Purdue engineering students, dubbed the "Chicago Six," created the first chapter of what was then called the Society of Black Engineers. In 1975, after a unanimous vote by the Purdue students and nearly 50 more from other accredited engineering schools, The National Society of Black Engineers was born.

"NSBE creates a welcoming environment for minority and Black students in engineering," said Christopher Boles, a doctoral student at the University of Cincinnati and the NSBE chapter vice president. "We focus on being together, working together and uplifting one another as well as reaching out to the community."

UC's chapter is one of more than 600 national and global chapters; there are more than 24,000 active NSBE members around the world. Each year, NSBE members and industry partners come together for annual regional and national conferences.

I will never forget attending my first NSBE National Convention. It was my first time attending an event with tens of thousands of Black engineers and I was shell shocked.

The conferences provide opportunities for professional development, including a career fair wherein hundreds of companies attend. Students can network with employers, sometimes landing co-op or full-time jobs. Additionally, the conferences are a tangible representation of the community NSBE provides for Black engineers.

"I will never forget attending my first NSBE National Convention," said Deborah Cole-Taylor, chemical engineering student and president of the UC NSBE chapter. "It was my first time attending a convention with tens of thousands of Black engineers and I was shell shocked. I came back from the convention with unforgettable memories I still reflect on today."

NSBE's community is reminiscent of a family for its members. Cole-Taylor shared that her involvement with the organization was driven by the desire to find a community of people on campus who could relate to her experiences as a Black person, and woman, in engineering. NSBE provided that for her.

"Engineering is challenging by itself, but holding these identities presents me with obstacles that many of our counterparts within the college and the field do not face," Cole-Taylor said.

Nationwide, NSBE is working to increase the number of Black students that earn bachelor's degrees in engineering to 10,000, annually, by 2025. To do this, they are organizing outreach programs with pre-collegiate initiative (K-12) students and their families. Each year, UC's chapter hosts several events for Cincinnati-area schools to inspire students to get interested in STEM.

One of the biggest annual events UC hosts is Engineer for a Day. NSBE members work with students on science experiments and demonstrations like the egg drop and the chemistry behind creating slime to show them what it's like to be an engineer. While they are doing these activities, their parents and guardians attend a panel hosted by current UC and CEAS students for a Q&A session about their experiences, the resources available and what it might look like here for their student.

NSBE is magic. I am so thankful for this network because it's more like family.

Whitney Gaskins, PhD CEAS Associate Dean

Whitney Gaskins (left), CEAS associate dean, has been involved with NSBE since she was an undergraduate student here at UC. She is pictured with founding member of UC NSBE, Keith Boswell. Photo/UC Alumni Association

NSBE works to form this connection with students before they enter college, and once it's made, it lasts well beyond graduation day. Many can testify to that. For Boles, he was introduced to NSBE during his undergraduate program, and a connection within the organization inspired him to pursue his doctoral degree, leading him to UC. For CEAS Associate Dean Whitney Gaskins, NSBE created a foundation for her career.

A unique element of the NSBE organization is that it is wholly student run on a campus, regional and national level. The policies and direction of NSBE are managed by engineering students. For instance, Gaskins shares that at the age of 21, she was managing a multimillion-dollar budget, planning conferences for thousands of people, and interacting with hundreds of companies in her role on the NSBE National Executive Board.

The University of Cincinnati has a strong history related to NSBE. For instance, one of the founding members of the chapter, Keith Boswell , was present at the inaugural NSBE conference in 1975 and the following year was named the first Region Four Chairperson.

"NSBE is magic," Gaskins said. "I am so thankful for this network because it's more like family."

For 50 years, the organization has been uplifting, encouraging and inspiring Black engineers and welcoming new members with open arms.

Public Health Students Reflect on ‘Educational and Important Training’

The Connecticut Public Health Association recently hosted its annual Advocacy Training Day at the University of New Haven. It was an exciting opportunity for students to explore important topics in the field and to connect with public health leaders and policymakers.

The University’s School of Health Sciences recently sponsored the Connecticut Public Health Association's Advocacy Training Day. The annual event, which was held at the University, brought together community members, public health professionals, and students. It enabled participants to explore important topics in public health such as policymaking, advocacy, and health equity.

The event was an immersive and rich learning opportunity for students, who had the opportunity to hear from leaders in the field and network with policymakers and healthcare professionals. Below, three students reflect on the experience.

The Connecticut Public Health Association recently organized an Advocacy Training Day at the University of New Haven. It was a seminar that helped public health students grow and nurture themselves for their present and future.

Vishwa Shah ’24 MPH.

I am an intern with the Connecticut Public Health Association, and I served as a volunteer for this advocacy training program. I enjoyed it a lot, along with my colleagues, professors, guest speakers, and fellow University of New Haven students.

First, we distributed a kit from the Connecticut Public Health Association with a warm welcome. Later, a welcome speech was given by Ms. Tiffany Morrissey, executive director of the Connecticut Health Council .

After that, our guest speakers discussed important public health topics such as health equity, public health leadership, health advocacy, and many more.

In conclusion, it was a great learning experience, and it reflects that there will be great future public health professionals in the form of students who are studying at the University of New Haven. It was a memorable day.

Chioma Nsude '24 MPH

Health equity and equality have been central topics in healthcare for as long as I can remember. During the CPHA Advocacy training, I gained a profound understanding of the popular saying, "A one-size-fits-all approach does not work in healthcare," thanks to Dawn Johnson, an accomplished healthcare leader. It's evident that health equity and equality go beyond knowing the policies or concepts related to healthcare. The key lies in understanding how to apply them. Achieving this requires humanity, teamwork, and discipline.

A powerpoint presentation about the definition of healthy equity.

Additionally, I delved into the political aspects of public health, learning about how laws are created and adopted, the agencies involved in the process, and the responsibilities of each branch. The presentations by Latoya Tyson and Taylor Tucker on health equity advocacy were enlightening. They emphasized the importance of being an advocate and highlighted that during advocacy, defining your "what" is crucial. Identifying "who" you are advocating for is equally important, as it determines your "how" when seeking solutions.

Reflecting on my experience at the CPHA advocacy training, I recognize that there is much work to be done to make health equity attainable. However, I am confident that it is achievable through simple steps such as taking a journey in your client's shoes, engaging in inclusive dialogue, staying grounded, showing up, and being intentional.

Emma Acampora ’24

The CHPA's 2024 advocacy training was truly exceptional in allowing students to get a firsthand experience into the world of public health. The day was filled with wholesome discussions and eye-opening lectures. As a young public health professional, I believe it is always important to go beyond the walls of your classroom and learn about active conversations being talked about in the community.

I found it extremely enlightening to hear the vocabulary, terms, and procedures taught in class also being used out in the public health field. This allows for an overwhelming confidence that once graduation day comes, I know I will be prepared and equipped to join the professional public health community.

During the presentation by advocate Dawn Johnson, I was impacted by the statement, "remove the lens of equity and implant corrective vision." So much of today's world is surrounded by assuming what a community or population needs, instead of taking a step back and asking. In order to achieve health equity and address structural injustices in the healthcare system in 2024, advocacy will be essential.

Five students in the University’s School of Health Sciences pose for a photo side by side.

Promoting initiatives and policies that support equitable access to healthcare resources and services, as well as working to challenge discriminatory policies, advocates aim to increase public awareness of health disparities. Policymakers, healthcare professionals, community leaders, and grassroots organizations are all essential in pushing for reform and holding institutions responsible for resolving health disparities.

An important step when it comes to public health advocacy is being heard by those who can help you implement change. After listening to Shelley Geballe from the Yale School of Public Health and Connecticut State Representative John-Michael Parker, it is apparent that getting involved in your local government in any capacity, whether that be speaking at a committee meeting or running for office, is extremely important.

Policymakers must put into practice evidence-based programs and policies that address the underlying causes of disparities if they are to make significant progress toward health equity. Increasing financing for community health centers that serve underprivileged populations, promoting culturally competent healthcare practices, investing in social determinants of health, such as affordable housing and wholesome food options, and broadening access to affordable healthcare coverage are some examples of what this entails.

Overall, I am thankful to the University of New Haven for allowing me to experience such an educational and important training.

SEATTLE (AP) — Prosecutors in Washington state said Wednesday they will not file felony charges against a Seattle police officer who struck and killed a graduate student from India while responding to an overdose call — a case that attracted widespread attention after another officer was recorded making callous remarks about it.

Officer Kevin Dave was driving 74 mph (119 kph) on a street with a 25 mph (40 kph) speed limit in a police SUV before he hit 23-year-old Jaahnavi Kandula in a crosswalk on Jan. 23, 2023.

In a memo to the Seattle Police Department on Wednesday, the King County prosecutor’s office noted that Dave had on his emergency lights, that other pedestrians reported hearing his siren, and that Kandula appeared to try to run across the intersection after seeing his vehicle approaching. She might also have been wearing wireless earbuds that could have diminished her hearing, they noted.

For those reasons, a felony charge of vehicular homicide was not warranted: “There is insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Ofc. Dave was consciously disregarding safety,” the memo said.

It remains possible that city prosecutors could file lesser charges, such as negligent driving. Tim Robinson, a spokesman for the Seattle City Attorney’s Office, said Wednesday that the case had not been referred to it for possible misdemeanor prosecution, and the Seattle Police Department did not immediately respond to an emailed inquiry about whether it might refer the case to that office.

Kandula’s death ignited outrage, especially after a recording from another officer’s body-worn camera surfaced last September , in which that officer laughs and suggests that Kandula’s life had “limited value” and the city should “just write a check.”

Diplomats from India as well as local protesters sought an investigation. The city’s civilian watchdog, the Office of Police Accountability, found last month that the comments by Officer Daniel Auderer — the vice president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild — damaged the department’s reputation and undermined public trust on a scale that is difficult to measure.

Seattle Police Chief Adrian Diaz is weighing Auderer’s punishment.

The comments were “derogatory, contemptuous, and inhumane,” wrote Gino Betts Jr., director of the accountability office.

In a statement to the office, Auderer acknowledged that his remarks — during a call with Mike Solan, the police union’s president — sounded callous, but that they were intended to mock a legal system that would try to put a value on Kandula’s life.

King County Prosecutor Leesa Manion called Kandula’s death heartbreaking, but she said Auderer’s “appalling” comments did not change the legal analysis of whether Dave should be charged.

“It is the Office of Police Accountability that bears the responsibility of disciplinary investigation and proceedings relating to Officer Auderer’s comment,” rather than the prosecutor’s office, Manion said.

The Seattle Police Officers Guild did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment. The union has said the comments were “highly insensitive” but also taken out of context.

Kandula was a graduate student at Northeastern University’s Seattle campus.
