UCL’s MSc Management is a highly competitive international programme that aims to deliver graduates who can develop strategies and make informed decisions, preparing young professionals for managing business complexity and innovation in dynamic and complex environments. We do this by providing you with a solid understanding of practical managerial issues, as well as a strong foundation in current theoretical debates, based on cutting-edge research, equipping  students with knowledge and skills to work for leading organisations around the world.

The programme offers two pathways, each tailored towards the needs of our students to ensure they get the most out of their studies:

• The Corporate pathway  is designed for students who may or may not have previously studied business and management, particularly those who have not studied Finance and Accounting in depth. 
• The Finance pathway  is for candidates who already have an undergraduate degree in business and management, having specifically studied Finance and Accounting. Having a degree in business and management is not enough for this pathway if you have not studied Finance and Accounting in sufficient depth.

There may be exceptions to these guidelines. Students who have a strong educational background in Finance and Accounting, even if they have not studied other disciplines related to business and management, may be allocated to the Finance pathway. Other factors will be considered for the pathway allocation, such as evidence of quantitative skills. We expect all applicants to state their preferred pathway in their personal statement. Fai l ure to do so implies the candidate does not have a preference and reallocation requests may not be accommodated.

At the discretion of the Programme Director, applicants may be invited to do an online test to measure previous knowledge of Finance and/or Accounting. The result of this test will be used to support the pathway allocation decision.

Pathways are allocated solely at the discretion of the Programme Director, with consideration of the entire educational background of each applicant. Decisions are made on a case-by-case basis and the guidance above is just indicative of the whole process.

Teaching and Learning  

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, workshops, and class discussions based on case studies and other activities. Student performance is assessed through simulations, presentations, coursework, group projects, class participation, and examinations. 

Students typically study 5 compulsory modules in Term 1 and up to 5 modules in Term 2, of which 1 is selected from the optional module list. Students on the Finance pathway may study their optional module in Term 2 or Term 3. Students on the Corporate pathway study their optional module in Term 2. In Term 3 all students undertake a Business Research module. 

Each taught module is delivered over 10 weeks, with 3 contact hours per week comprising lecture content and interactive components. Some optional modules in Term 3 are delivered intensively with 10 x 3-hour sessions over a period of 1 to 5 weeks. The Business Research module requires students to watch videos, in addition to lectures, exercises and workshops in classes. 

In addition, students spend approximately 10 hours a week for each module on assessment and independent study to further develop the skills and knowledge covered in lectures and seminars.  

The total number of weekly hours will vary according to the weekly activities being undertaken.   

Business Research and Business Plans

For the MSIN0100 Business Research module, you will write either a business research (short dissertation) or a business plan for a new business or an existing business that wants to expand operations. You can choose your topics in accordance with your career plans.

As part of this module, you have the opportunity to develop a consultancy project with a company of your choice. This work is done in small groups, with the supervision of the company and of UCL School of Management professionals. This consultancy project aims to train you to solve actual business problems and to help you to better understand business in the United Kingdom. It also provides a good opportunity for broadening professional networks. The consultancy project is optional and it is not for grade.

International Summer Schools

You will have the opportunity to apply to spend two weeks attending workshops and seminars in a university abroad. Partner schools include HEC Paris , KU Leuven in Belgium ,  Tsinghua University in Beijing , Zhejiang University in Hangzhou , Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay , University of Chile in Santiago , and Externado University in Bogotá . This option depends upon approval from the Programme Director, taking into consideration your grades and career objectives, as well as the number of available places.

Students selected by the Programme Director may undergo an additional, independent application and selection process by the partner school, which reserves the right to make the final decision on whether or not to accept a student's application.

The UCL School of Management will support a summer school student's visa application (if applicable) to enter the relevant country of the partner school. Nevertheless, the decision to grant a visa to a summer school student is solely that of the host country's government.

Language Classes

All our students are allowed and encouraged to take language classes in the evening, either at the UCL Language Centre or at the UCL School of Slavonic & East European Studies . UCL offers many different languages at all levels. These language classes are self-funded by students and not subsidised by the UCL School of Management.

Student Activities

During their year at UCL, you will have the opportunity to participate in various student activities on the Bloomsbury campus including clubs, societies, cultural events, sports, etc. Moreover, the MSc Management students have organised their own activities including a football team, a China network society, a Women in Management society, final-term parties and celebrations, etc.

Entry Requirements

Academic profile:  A good undergraduate degree from a recognised university – a minimum of UK Second Class Honours (Upper Division - 2:1) or the international equivalent. International Students may ascertain qualification equivalents from the  UCL international students website.  UCL Admissions check qualification equivalencies before forwarding application forms to our School. The UCL School of Management is unable to comment on international qualifications.

Career Aspirations:  A personal statement outlining (1) the motivation for studying management and (2) future career aspirations. Applicants benefit from showing that they have actively taken steps to meet their career goals through activities such as work experience, internships, and/or volunteering.   Details should be included on the application form and a CV should also be attached.

English Language skills:  An English Language Level 2 qualification is required

•  English as native language or
•  A Level 2 of English in any English language qualification or test recognised by UCL. 
•  Applicants are encouraged to include evidence of their English language qualification at the time they apply.

Additional documents:  If an applicant would like any directly relevant work experience or short academic courses (outside of any formal degree qualification) to be taken into consideration as part of their application, they must provide verifiable evidence for each in the form of a confirmation letter from the provider as part of their initial application. This confirmation must be provided on business/institution letterhead, listing the name and email address of a supervisor who oversaw the placement.

A maximum of five confirmation letters per application will be considered and any placements/courses must have been undertaken no more than two years before the programme start date. If such letters are not provided or we are unable to verify the placements/courses, these will not be taken into consideration as part of the application or for the purpose of pathway allocation.

Equivalency Requirements for Chinese Applicants.  International students are required to have the equivalent of an upper second-class Bachelor's degree to apply for the MSc in Management. For applicants from China, this is usually a Bachelors degree with a minimum weighted average mark of 87% or 93%, depending on the institution. GMAT/GRE: This programme does not require results from a GMAT, GRE or equivalent standardised test. Applicants who have taken a test are encouraged to submit their results if they feel their score will strengthen their application.

Qualifications are assessed only once an application has been submitted. The equivalency of overseas qualifications cannot be assessed unless a full application with all supporting documentation such as degree transcripts, references, etc. has already been submitted to UCL. 

Applications for MSc Management are assessed in 4 stages: 

UCL aims to complete stages 1-2 within 8 weeks. Stage 3 will begin from January 2024 onwards. Applicants who enter stage 4 may not receive a decision before August 2024.

The UCL MSc Finance programme is a specialist Master’s degree designed for those targeting finance as a professional career.

This full-time programme is delivered by UCL School of Management and UCL’s Department of Economics, providing a study of finance underpinned by a blend of quantitative and qualitative components. It is based in UCL School of Management’s home in Canary Wharf, the heart of London’s dynamic financial centre. It aims to provide individuals with the knowledge, understanding and skills to enable them to engage with specialist roles in the modern global financial industry. Such roles are likely to be within a range of organisations, including but not limited to; commercial banks, investment banks, asset management companies, hedge funds and private equity firms, insurance companies, credit rating agencies, fintech firms, broker/dealers, and boutique financial advisory companies. 

All participants study four core modules in Term 1, providing a robust quantitative underpinning in key areas of finance. In Term 2, a further two core modules are studied, again reflecting a quantitative thrust. An elective portfolio is offered, with four elective modules which can be undertaken in Term 2 and/or Term 3. The elective modules enable participants to develop their interests in a number of specialist areas. Additionally, in Term 3 and during the summer, participants engage in the design, execution and delivery of a finance research project which will be supported by a compulsory 10-hour research methods module.

The optional modules listed are subject to change each year and are indicative only. The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures and seminars. Assessment is through written examinations, individual/group coursework, and a 7,500-word dissertation. 

Each taught module in Terms 1 and 2 is delivered over 10 weeks, with 3 contact hours per week comprising lecture content and interactive components. Optional modules in Term 3 are delivered intensively with 10 x 3-hour sessions over a period of 5 weeks.  

In addition, students spend approximately 7-12 hours a week for each module on assessment and independent study to further develop the skills and knowledge covered in lectures and seminars.  

The total number of weekly hours will vary according to the module and the weekly activities being undertaken.   

Programme dates

This programme is full-time for one year, starting in September 2024 and ending in September 2025.

All students must be in London prior to 23 September 2024, which is the first day of the first term.

Core and optional module lectures, and any workshops, normally take place on weekdays between 08:00 – 21.00 hours but may be scheduled for weekends, especially on Saturdays.

If you are passionate about finance and want to push yourself in your quest to forge a career in finance, or want to develop your knowledge of finance, this programme will be instrumental in achieving your goals.

MSc Finance students are expected to have basic knowledge in financial mathematics and econometrics, and should be motivated to take their knowledge to the next level. To get to that next level, we expect a great deal from our students, so if you choose to study with us, you can expect to be working hard, challenging yourself as we challenge you, and regularly finding yourself out of your comfort zone.

Our students come from different academic backgrounds including economics, finance, mathematics, mathematical economics, econometrics, economic theory, statistics, engineering, or any combination of thereof. Degrees from other disciplines may be considered if the applicant has a background in mathematics or econometrics.

While we do welcome students from a wide variety of backgrounds onto the programme, we stress to our applicants that this programme is highly mathematical and quantitative, so you should be prepared to be pushed in these areas. Should you be admitted onto the programme, you may wish to do some extra preparation in these areas to ensure your basic knowledge is on par with your peers. Applications for the 2024/25 close on 13 June 2024 at 17:00 UK time. Applications must be complete and submitted by this time, or they will not be considered.

Application process

Students are advised to apply as early as possible due to the competition for places. A staged admissions process is in place for this programme. This means that when you apply, your application will be considered with all others that have been submitted before the deadline. This enables us to ensure that all applications are considered fairly and equally.

Entry requirements

We look for students with drive, intelligence, passion, and the right aptitude. To ensure we enrol students who meet those four criteria, we use the following methods to assess applications.

Academic Entry Requirement

• A quantitative undergraduate degree at 2:1 Honours (or equivalent) from a recognised university. International students can find their international equivalency on the  UCL international students website.
• Degrees in economics, financial economics, finance, mathematics, management science or statistics are preferred. Degrees in business, accounting, engineering and related fields are also considered. 
• GMAT/GRE are not required for MSc Finance.
• Applicants with a degree that is not in a highly quantitative discipline are encouraged to submit a GMAT or GRE result. A score of at least 43/60 in the quantitative section of GMAT, or 162 in the quantitative section of GRE will add weight to an application.

English Language Requirement

Professional statement

A professional statement is a key component of the application process and must accompany the initial application. The statement will capture and articulate the motivation to pursue the MSc Finance programme, demonstrating a clear interest in finance and economics, feeding into a statement of well-researched and grounded, short and long-term professional and personal objectives. We also require a copy of your CV.

Applicants who meet the entry requirements and provide an appropriate professional statement will be reviewed. Those considered eligible for the next stage will be invited to an online video interview, with the invitation sent by email from Kira Talent. 

Relevant work experience

Demonstration of an appropriate academic background is essential. Experience in the finance and finance-related sector is beneficial but is not a prerequisite. Applications with work experience in fields other than finance will be considered on their merits.

International profile

Applicants should highlight any international experience they have, including international exchanges, trips, internships, fluency in languages other than their native one, and/or interest in other cultures. These attributes would be advantageous because applicants are likely to be working in a highly diverse and international environment.

About this degree

Students develop a working knowledge of many aspects of political science theory relevant to understanding how public policies are formulated, implemented and evaluated. They gain a basic understanding of economic approaches to public policy analysis and of the concepts of economic efficiency and equity as societal objectives. Students also learn extensively about research methods which gives them the tools necessary to understand political processes and to analyse important policy issues.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars and case studies, and is taught by scholars who have carried out theoretical and empirical research in the field. Students will be assessed by a variety of methods: unseen examinations, long essays, course work and the dissertation.
