10 great PhD scholarships in the US for international students 2022

If you’re an international student looking for PhD scholarships, consider the US. With over 4,000 universities and six different time zones across 50 states, the US is one of the most popular study destinations in the world. Three main reasons why the US continues to attract PhD students despite their geographical location (usually taking up to two days to arrive from elsewhere) and high living costs as befits a developed nation, are outlined below.

Firstly, the US is home to many world-class universities with robust global  rankings – some of them are even in the top 100 world universities. Even though ranking is not an all-important reason to choose a university to do a PhD, it makes sense to study in one of the world’s best-ranked universities, and where else but to choose the US.

Secondly, the US PhD takes a longer time than PhDs in other countries. This is not necessarily a bad thing because when the US PhD takes up to five years or longer to complete, you will have more time to adjust, settle in and eventually thrive in your studies.

Finally, students doing their PhDs in the US are almost guaranteed to have a tuition fee waiver. They will get a stipend from the university for the entire duration of their studies as well, which makes for an attractive incentive.

However, if you want to get this funded PhD in the US, especially in the top-ranked universities, it is always a good idea to apply as early as possible before their deadlines. If you miss the scholarship deadline, you can still apply and be accepted for the PhD.

Here is a list of US PhD scholarships and stipends that will help you achieve your dream of studying in the US.

PhD Scholarship 1: University of Idaho

As one of the top 100 for the best value in the US, the University of Idaho is a great choice to do your PhD, thanks to the low cost of living and tuition fees. The College of Graduate Studies has several knowledgeable staff who can advise you on the wide array of financial aid resources as well.

You need to have a relevant master’s degree to be able to apply for this scholarship by Apr. 1, 2022. Can I get health insurance as an international college student?

Health insurance is a major concern for higher education students in the United States. Most colleges provide some form of health insurance through the university. Some colleges extend employee health insurance to PhD students who teach. Joining the faculty is one of the best ways to get health insurance. If that’s not an option, there should be other ways to acquire affordable health insurance. Research assistantships can also provide insurance.

What colleges have the most international students?

What majors are popular with students of other nationalities.

  • aerospace engineering
  • petroleum engineering
  • environmental engineering.
  • social sciences
  • biological sciences
  • data science,
  • fine and applied arts .

Psychology, including clinical psychology, and developmental psychology are also popular.

What is the best way to find financial aid for my degree?

While the scholarships we featured here are outstanding, there are many other scholarships out there. Check with any organizations you’re part of. They include:

  • a religious organization
  • a political organization
  • a corporation

Many offer financial aid opportunities. Additionally, if you are already a student, see if there are any programs in the U.S. that have a partnership with your school. With this article we tried to focus on generally available third party scholarships. Many colleges have specific financial aid only for students at their school. You should check with all the colleges you are interested in, especially those with high percentages of foreign students.

Check with your professional organization, if you have one, for scholarships available through your organization. They may also know of very niche scholarships that you might qualify for. The scholarships we featured here are mostly available through U.S. and international organizations. If you live in a developing country, your government may have scholarships designed to help future leaders study abroad. Regardless of your country’s economic development status, you should check with your government if your field is rare or has a shortage. Governments will often use scholarships as incentives to get people to major in sectors short on labor.

Another thing to keep in mind is that PhD fellowships and scholarships can be incredibly granular. Sometimes requirements become so narrow as to specify specific research topics, like artificial intelligence or human origins, to name a couple we’ve seen researching this article. Keep in mind that a great research proposal can go a long way toward securing you grants and fellowships.

Is it feasible for the average person to study abroad?

It’s easier and more common for graduate students to study abroad. This is because graduate students tend to either have more money, or their programs are shorter than those of undergraduate students. Whether or not it’s a good option for you to study abroad will depend on several factors.

First and foremost is money. It’s just more expensive to study abroad than it is at home. Even if you earn full scholarships or fellowships, it can still be financially taxing to study abroad.

You also have to be careful about your visa. Student visas might limit your ability to work and pay for living expenses while studying abroad. While the international scholarships we feature here are incredible, they are the best of the best and competition is fierce.

The ongoing public health crisis isn’t helping people who want to study abroad either.

So there are many challenges if you want to earn your PhD degree in another country. However, if you really feel your best choice is to study abroad, and you can get the aid you need to make it happen, it can be the experience of a lifetime and great for your career.

And here’s a tip. If you want the best weather, pick a California school.

  • Developing countries international scholarship U.S. college.

Mentioning your home country in your searches will save you time, as many programs only accept students from specific nations, and you don't want to get stuck sorting through those.

Next, organize your search results in a spreadsheet that includes your main parameters, such as application due date, relevance for your major, and potential financial award . That way, you can easily sort your scholarship options by the metrics that you care about.

You can streamline this process by using the Common App tool. This helpful resource allows you to send the same application to multiple schools at once, and it has an option for applying to scholarships, too.

Most scholarship applications require a few key pieces of information, including your transcripts, an essay, and letters of recommendation . In the case of international scholarship applications, you will need to provide proof of your visa, too. A resume or proof of work in a particular industry may also be necessary.

Make your application stand out by writing a thoughtful, earnest personal essay. Use the space to tell your story honestly while emphasizing the hurdles you face as an international learner, and be sure to outline your goals.

Studies have shown that students who engage in research and development projects report significant improvements in performance and publication activity, highlighting the impact of funding on academic engagement and success.

Start with University Websites

The quest for fully funded master’s programs should begin at the source: official university websites. These platforms often provide information on scholarships, grants, and fellowships specifically designed for postgraduate students.

  • Check Dedicated Sections: Check the university website’s scholarships or financial aid sections for accurate and up-to-date information.
  • Faculty and Department Pages: Some opportunities are department-specific. Review the pages of relevant departments for specialized funding options.

Find & Use Scholarship Databases

The employment status of master’s graduates can be significantly influenced by the type of program and funding, with funded programs often leading to faster employment post-graduation.

Exploring reputable scholarship databases is important in finding fully funded master’s programs. Websites like Fastweb and Scholarships.com list thousands of funding opportunities. These platforms compile fully paid master’s opportunities from around the globe, catering to various disciplines and study levels.

Tips on Using Filters to Find Fully Funded Programs:

  • Start Broad, Then Narrow Down: Begin with a wide search scope and gradually apply filters to narrow down to fully funded opportunities.
  • Utilize Advanced Search Options: Make the most of advanced search features to filter by program level, field of study, and funding type.
  • Check Regularly: New scholarships are added frequently so that regular visitors can uncover new opportunities.
  • Read the Fine Print: Make sure that the funding covers tuition and living expenses to qualify as fully funded.

Other Resources to Check

Studies have shown that master’s degree funding sources can significantly influence the development of career-relevant skills in STEM doctoral students, suggesting that the type of funding (e.g. fellowships, assistantships) may also impact master’s students’ skill development and career prospects.

Prospective students can also increase their chances of securing a fully funded master’s program by methodically exploring the following avenues. This may help pave the way for academic and professional advancement without the burden of financial constraints.

  • Professional Organizations: Depending on your field of study, professional bodies may offer scholarships or grants to postgraduate students.
  • Government and Non-Governmental Scholarships: Look for government-sponsored scholarships and those NGOs offer. For instance, the Fulbright Program offers grants for international students.
  • Social Media and Academic Forums: Joining academic forums and social media groups related to higher education funding can provide leads and advice from peers and professionals alike.

Common Master’s Scholarships for International Students

International students have access to various scholarships for master’s programs worldwide. These scholarships often include tuition, living expenses, and sometimes travel.

Here are some notable ones:

  • Fulbright Program (USA): Offers scholarships for international students to study in the USA.
  • Chevening Scholarships (UK): Provides funding for master’s degrees for students from Chevening-eligible countries.
  • Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees (EU): Offers scholarships for various master’s programs across Europe.
  • DAAD Scholarships (Germany): The German Academic Exchange Service provides scholarships for international students to study in Germany.

Each scholarship has specific eligibility criteria and application processes, so thorough research is recommended to find the best fit for your academic and career goals.

Networking and Professional Associations

Networking plays a pivotal role in uncovering hidden or less-advertised funding opportunities. Engaging with professional associations in your field can also provide valuable insights and leads.

Research indicates that funding for Ph.D. and potentially master’s programs can positively impact research performance and career outcomes, with those receiving grants exhibiting better performance than those who are self-funded.

Here are some tips that can help you build a professional network to find opportunities:

  • Industry-specific Groups: Join organizations related to your field for access to exclusive scholarships and grants.
  • Academic Societies: Academic societies often offer funding for research and study within specific disciplines.
  • Online Professional Networks: Platforms like LinkedIn and Facebook can connect you to groups and individuals sharing funding opportunities.

Contacting Program Coordinators Directly

Reaching out to program coordinators directly can help you get specific details about funding opportunities that may not be widely advertised.

Some questions you can ask the programs regarding funded programs include:

  • Type of Funding Available: Is it a fellowship , scholarship, or assistantship?
  • Coverage Details: Does the funding cover tuition, living expenses, or both?
  • Application Process and Deadlines: What steps are involved, and when is the application deadline?
  • Eligibility Criteria: Are there any specific requirements to qualify for the funding?

Consider Research and Teaching Assistantships

The availability of a master’s degree can directly affect wage levels, indicating that fully funded programs alleviate financial burdens. They also potentially lead to higher earnings post-graduation.

Assistantships are a valuable funding source for master’s students, offering a stipend and tuition waivers in exchange for research or teaching duties. This can help you manage your finances even if you’re not on a 100% scholarship.

Here’s how you can find assistantship opportunities:

  • University Departments: Check with your department for available assistantship positions.
  • Faculty Members: Contact faculty members directly to inquire about research assistant opportunities.
  • Graduate Admissions Office: Some universities centralize assistantship applications through this office.

Use Social Media and Forums

Social media groups and forums can be rich resources for scholarship leads and advice. Engage with online communities for leads and advice on finding fully-funded master’s programs through:

  • Joining Scholarships/Higher Education Groups: Platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn host numerous groups dedicated to scholarships and funding opportunities.
  • Participating in Discussions: Engage actively in these groups to get insights and tips from peers and experts.

Financial Aid from Governments and NGOs

Governments and NGOs offer scholarships that can cover the full cost of master’s programs for international students.

External R&D funding, akin to fully funded master’s programs, has been shown to positively impact the career trajectory and research productivity of graduate students, underlining the importance of seeking such funding opportunities.

Here’s what you should know about state-funded master’s programs:

  • Research Eligibility: Government and NGO scholarships often have specific eligibility criteria based on nationality, field of study, or intended career path.
  • Application Process: Visit the official websites of relevant governments and NGOs for detailed application instructions and deadlines.
