The department offers a full-time Ph.D. programme which is created in accordance with UGC guidelines. The researchers must conform to the publication standards and thesis submission guidelines, as well as the most recent university policy released in connection with the Ph.D. programme. According to university norms, any scholar who joins the programme must complete a course within the first year. For each Ph.D. scholar to be qualified to continue with his or her dissertation study, these courses must be successfully completed with a minimum grade of B+ within the allotted time. The scholar is needed to take a comprehensive oral examination following the conclusion of the course work in order to demonstrate that they have done the background reading for the research project. The next step is the qualifying exam, which advances the candidate to the level of advanced candidacy. The scholar appears for the final open defence, which results in the program’s completion, after meeting all requirements and receiving approval from the Examiners and Committee members. Admission

Doctoral programs at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham are designed to develop outstanding educational researchers with a wide range of research skills as well as in-depth knowledge and practical understanding and expertise in their chosen field of educational research.

Learning Steps for Ph.D.

The number of course-work credits that a doctoral student undertakes is decided by the Doctoral Committee and depends upon the student’s background and intended Ph.D. research area. Research Methodology and Foundation Course are compulsory courses for all streams.

In addition:

Students entering with an M.A., M.Com., M.F.A., and M.S.W. degree must complete a minimum of 12 credits. All students have to complete a 3-credit Minor course, i.e., one that falls outside the student’s research area. This course could be from the same school as that of the student (but different department) or it could be from a different school. The credits for the Minor course are included in the above-mentioned course-work credits. When necessary, the Doctoral Committee may prescribe more course-work credits than the minimum number of credits stated above.

In addition to course-work, the doctoral student is expected to carry out creative and scholarly research leading up to the completion of a written Ph.D. Thesis. Doctoral research must result in original and substantial contributions to the chosen specialized field of study. This requires mastery of the literature in the specialized field, and critical thinking and judgment. The student should also relate the field of study to the broader discipline within which the research falls. In recognition of the substantial nature of Ph.D. thesis work, it will carry 60 credits. Full-time doctoral students shall register for 10-15 credits per semester. Satisfactory progress in thesis work will result in an ‘O’ grade (for ongoing) and unsatisfactory progress will result in an ‘I’ grade (for incomplete), which is to be made up within one semester.

Satisfactory progress will be judged by the Doctoral Committee on the basis of semester wise progress reports submitted by the doctoral student and/or the completion of publishable papers.

All doctoral students must take a Comprehensive Examination after completion of all course-work. The Comprehensive Examination is an oral (in some Schools, a written-cum-oral) examination administered by the Doctoral Committee and examines the course work undergone by the candidate.

After completion of the Comprehensive Examination, every doctoral student is expected to publish one refereed paper a year. These papers should be in a Scopus indexed journal or conference proceedings.

All doctoral students must take a Qualifying Examination. The Qualifying Examination is an oral examination administered by a Qualifying Examination Committee consisting of the Doctoral Committee together with an external expert from a reputed academic or R&D institution in India. The Convener of the Doctoral Committee will be the Convener of the Qualifying Examination Committee.

After advancement to candidacy, all doctoral candidates are required to present two research seminars. The two seminars should be at least six months apart, with the second seminar being held immediately before the submission of the Synopsis

Once the Thesis Advisor and Doctoral Committee are satisfied that the doctoral candidate has completed the required research for the award of the Ph.D. degree and the candidate has published (or has an acceptance of) a refereed Scopus indexed journal paper and has also given the second Open Seminar the candidate is required to submit a written Synopsis to the Doctoral Committee for approval. The Synopsis should include the motivation, significance and main objectives of the research, along with a brief literature survey and a detailed report on the thesis research.

The doctoral candidate should submit the Ph.D. Thesis to the Doctoral Committee normally within six weeks from the date of submission of the Synopsis.

On getting reports from examiners regarding the acceptance of thesis.

Recommendation reports of the doctoral committee and open defense panel.

The Ph.D programme gives students the opportunity to study independently and collaboratively to gain a thorough understanding of their chosen research subjects and to become experts in those fields. The curriculum prepares participants to become innovative scholars and responsible educators while exemplifying the duties of a professional and ethical citizen. By promoting publications at international conferences, journals with high impact factors, patents, and other forms of intellectual property, they are encouraged to create high quality intellectual property.

PhD at the Institute.

The institute has close ties with the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai. Seminars and courses are often conducted jointly by members of both institutes. It is also possible for students to pursue research work with faculty at either institute.

Admission procedure

Candidates are selected on the basis of an entrance examination held during May in various centres across the country, followed by an interview held in Chennai. Admission forms are normally distributed in early March: look for advertisements and announcements on the . The academic programme usually begins in August.

The normal qualifications are MSc (for Mathematics and Physics) and MTech/ME (for Computer Science). Exceptional candidates with qualifications such as BSc/BTech/BE will also be considered.

Scholarships

At present, Research Scholars get a stipend of Rs 37000 per month for the first two years and Rs 42000 per month for the next three years, along with an annual book grant of Rs 10000. Scholars who do not stay in the hostel are eligible for a house rent allowance of 27% of stipend per month. The scholarship amounts are revised periodically, and are on par with the premier research institutes in India.

CMI has introduced a part-time PhD programme to allow students to complete a PhD while continuing to work for their parent organisations. The part-time PhD programme is primarily intended for candidates who are working in an environment where they can naturally pursue their PhD research side-by-side with their normal duties: e.g. college teachers or R&D professionals.

Part-time students are admitted based on an entrance examination and an interview, like regular PhD students. Students must already have a Masters degree to be admitted to the part-time PhD programme. There is a minimum residency requirement of one semester during the first year of the programme.

Generative AI & Large Language Models

Online Graduate Certificate

GenAI is Transforming the World

What will you create with it.

Generative AI has already revolutionized the world and it’s not slowing down. As a trained computer scientist, if you want to contribute to the revolution of Generative AI, and make an immediate impact in your organization, now is the time to enhance your expertise.

A training ground for Generative AI

In Carnegie Mellon’s new Generative AI and Large Language Models graduate certificate, offered by CMU’s nationally-ranked School of Computer Science, you will learn the latest and most advanced techniques in Generative AI, large language models and multimodal machine learning from expert faculty at the forefront of computer science research.

This is not your average online certificate program. The coursework covers complex topics that build on expertise in applied mathematics, programming, machine learning and deep learning.

By the end of this certificate, you will be prepared to build customized applications of Generative AI. You will learn how to  design and implement scalable systems for large language models, evaluate and choose between existing models, do customization via finetuning, and leverage multimodal machine learning through integrating and modeling multiple communicative modalities (e.g. audio, images, and video).

More than theory, this program takes a hard-core systems approach by giving you not only the technical skills but the ability to implement and scale solutions based on your unique organizational needs and resources. Here you will gain the depth, breadth and practical skills to apply this technology immediately.

Our advanced program will teach you how to:

  • Implement state-of-the-art language models such as GPT and LLaMA from scratch.
  • Compare and contrast different models and approaches in order to determine the best setup for tasks you care about.
  • Perform model training and inference using popular frameworks such as HuggingFace.
  • Design and run generative AI systems on h igh performance computer infrastructure using tools like SLURM.
  • Understand and be able to apply algorithms and system techniques to efficiently train LLMs with huge datasets, including efficient fine-tuning and reinforcement learning with human feedback, acceleration on GPU and other hardware, model compression for deployment, and online system maintenance.
  • Implement multimodal systems such as audio-visual speech recognition, image generation, and video captioning—addressing challenges in (1) multimodal representation learning, (2) translation and mapping between modalities, (3) modality alignment, (4) multimodal fusion and (5) co-learning.

A powerful certificate. Conveniently offered.

The Graduate Certificate in Generative AI and Large Language Models is offered 100% online to accommodate your busy schedule as a working professional. Along with weekly, live-online interactive classes taught by expert CMU faculty, you will complete hands-on learning activities on your own time that complement the discussions you have in class. To earn the certificate, you will complete three rigorous CMU classes over an 18-month period.
