I would rather be here than anywhere else in the country because with all her faults and failings, the people of Kolkata are loving, caring, unique. Kolkata was once the capital of India and there are many traces of her lost glory. The city also has much historical significance. The Victoria Memorial is the greatest landmark of the city. The city is located at the mouth of the river Hooghly, a distributary of the river Ganga, which flows into the Bay of Bengal. From days of old, traders visited this city and it has now grown into a big business centre.

Kolkata boasts of people of all castes and creeds, traditions, cultures, languages, dress and foods. Once a city of milk and honey, people from all parts of the country flocked here to put down their roots.

Kolkata is a seat of learning, art, drama,festivals, dance and music.

Kolkata has great shopping centres and is noted for the best Haldon sarees in the co for the best handloom sarees in the country. It is SONEND one of the cheapest cities in India for sarees, clothes, shoes and leatherwear.

The bustling capital of the Indian state of West Bengal, Kolkata is a living megacity which boasts of culturally rich ethnicity and exemplarily awarded leaders and laureates. It has been the pot boil of various historical movements and literary renaissances.

Jawaharlal Nehru once said, “Kolkata is the city of processions, of political manifestations”.

It is also a home for many great artists and revolutionists like Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Vivekananda, Rabindranath Tagore, Subhash Chandra Bose, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Mother Teresa and Satyajit Ray. There are various aspects to this third most productive and populated metropolitan city of India.

History of Kolkata

 The East India Company took over the trade and gave the name Calcutta in the 17th century. It was a huge colonial city and the capital of the British Indian empire till 1911. Later the capital was shifted to Delhi owing to the growing nationalism among the demography.

It was also the busiest and biggest trade port under the British empire. Western education and influences first came in India in Calcutta where it became a global city due to the amalgamation of European sciences and literature with Indian art and traditions. It was the hub of independence movements and revolutionary ideas.   

Architecture 

• North Kolkata : This is the area which was most inhabited by the British and the 19th century Victorian style architecture is testimonial to that. It is brimming with overpopulated dwellings and greatly active bazaars. Shyambazaar, Chitpur, Shobhabazaar, Dum Dum, Maniktala are popular centers.  
• Central Kolkata : This is the important business hub of government and private offices like the RBI and the High Court. The Maidan is often cited as the ‘lungs of Kolkata’ as it is in the heart of the city. Victoria Memorial and Kolkata Race Course are present in its vicinity. Central Park and Millennium Park are also popular areas.  
• East Kolkata : This is relatively new and is recently been planned and developed. The Salt Lake City or Bhidannagar, Rajarhat (New Town), Beliaghata are centres of IT and telecommunications industry.  
• South Kolkata : This is the locality which is considered posh and highly developed. Lansdowne, Santoshpur, Golf Green, Ballygunge and Alipore are main attractions. The headquarters for the Eastern Command of the Indian Army is at Fort William.  

  Climate  

 Mostly moderate, climate in Kolkata is fairly pleasant and tropical. The summers which extend from March to June are hot and humid. The winter is not harsh. The coldest month is January where temperatures have sometimes gone to 5 degrees Celsius.

The months of April to June entail heavy rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms. This time is called the ‘kal- boishakhi’. The pollution levels are alarming and increase the risk of lung cancer and other diseases needs to be curbed with.  

 The sex ratio in Kolkata is 899 females per 1000 males (this is lower than the national average). According to the 2011 census, the population of the city is above eleven million and the literacy rate is 87.14%, higher than the national average. Bengali Hindus are a majority.

They worship Goddess Durga and celebrate Durga Pooja with utmost fervour. Kolkata is known for making enchanting sculptures of Mahishasurmardini (Goddess Durga who killed the demon Mahishasur). People here also have great academic inclination.

This place is different from other cities of India because it focuses on football and sports other than just cricket. Residents of Kolkata are known to be modern, logical and intelligent. Marwadis, Biharis and Assamese people are large minorities.  

Kolkata is the major centre for finance and commerce in Eastern India. It is the only city in the east to have an international airport.

Once, it was the financial market of India but due to drop in economy post independence, when leftists kept hurdling the offices with strikes and extreme militant unions marred the commerce scene in the city, the city suffered decline in its popularity as a financial hub and began to be called ‘the dying city’.

It has, however, gained steady progress again and is now a big competition even to international cities.  

Often dubbed as the ‘City of Furious, Creative energy’, the culture, media or sports chapters in this city are a vivacious kaleidoscope of the creative and modern minds of Kolkata. People here love to eat – the innumerable sweets, fish dishes and savoury snacks available at every household and nook and corner of the city is the heartbeat of its culture.

‘Sondesh’, a sweet made of milk extract or ‘chhena’ and ‘rasgulla’, a syrupy white milk ball, are evergreen favourites. Among main dishes, various gourmet fish curries and recipes are something Kolkata and in general Bengalis pride themselves on.

Kolkata’s street food game is top notch as well – inspired by European pallet, the Kathi Roll or noodles served within an egg white wrap is unanimously the number one snack voted by college and office goers. It is a dreamland for foodies. Even in the field of fashion and media, the public is inspirational.   

It is often said that Kolkata houses India’s best singers and aplomb talent for fine arts. Various universally acknowledged painters, writers, singers, dancers, sculptors, engineers and scientists take pride in calling Kolkata their home.   

Trams are the specialty of Kolkata’s transport. They are mono trains that run on tracks made on roads. Still a huge hit amongst the public, it is a mirror of the rich heritage and history of this old yet youthful city.

Due to its diversity and wonders, it is known as ‘City of Joy’. Kolkata has its own airport named ‘Netaji Subash Chandra Bose International Airport’. The most spectacular sites to see in Kolkata are Victoria Memorial, Writer’s Building, National Library, Saheed Minar, Howrah Bridge, Fort Williams, Birla Planetarium, and Nicco Park, etc.

Dhaka is the capital city of Bangladesh, where I live. It is the biggest city and business center for the whole country. Dhaka has a huge amount of population and it is one of the most dense city in the world. It is a beautiful city after all situated in the bank of Buriganga River.

Kolkata, My Dream City for 100 Reasons – Kolkata, capital of West Bengal is a city of joy for some, for many others it is a city of dreams. There are a 100 things to do in Kolkata if not more. I have done just a fraction of them, and my to do list has more interesting places to see in Kolkata. If you are in undecided about what to do in Kolkata , do save this travel essay for easy reference to plan a trip to this great city of India.

For me it is a city I am dreaming to visit  once more. The memory of the sight of Howrah Bridge has almost faded. The child in me is fantasizing a tram ride, only Kolkata offers this in the whole of India. Hoping to visit Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s house again. British rule has left behind its stamp in the form of Victorian style mansions; I vaguely remember the classic outline of these buildings. The holy effect of Belur Math has worn off. And Dakshineswar Temple? How can I skip that? All these have to be remedied and I am craving for another visit to Kolkata, my dream city.

I had been there a couple of times that is almost two decades back, it was Calcutta city then! Sigh! What I hear now is the city’s facade has changed. Lot of changes outwardly but its traditional spirit hasn’t.

The name “Calcutta” is the Anglicized version of “Kolkata,” which was used during the British colonial period. The city was officially named Calcutta by the British East India Company in the late 17th century. which remained the city’s official name until 2001, when the government of West Bengal officially changed it to “Kolkata” to reflect the original Bengali pronunciation and heritage.

But did you know Calcutta was Kalikata?

The British adopted and Anglicized “Kalikata” into “Calcutta.” Kalikata , was one of the three villages (along with Sutanuti and Gobindapur) that existed in the area before the city was established.

• Largest Banyan Tree : The Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden in Kolkata is home to the largest banyan tree in India. The prison came to be known as the “black hole.” A monument commemorating the British officials who died was initially erected at the original site of the Black Hole within Fort William in 1901, and was eventually moved to the grounds of St. John’s Church in 1940.

Kolkata is home to several outstanding museums but sadly I could explore only two. One of the primary reasons for me to get back to Kolkata is to explore the unseen ones. It is one of the few carriers serving destinations across all six major continents. Kolkata has umpteen number of must see sights, even a seven day tour will not suffice. I am at a loss to choose what over what.

I am Sujata Chakraborthy. I live in a beautiful ancient city known as Kolkata. It is the capital of West Bengal. It is the 2 nd largest city & 4 th metropolitan cities of our country. It is also known as the city of joy due to its diversity & wonders.

I love my city very much and I am proud to be a part of it. It is full of life.

The city was named as “Calcutta” until 2001 but later it was named as “Kolkata” due to its Bengali pronunciation. This city was made by the British Empire. The name Kolkata represents “Kalik khetro” which is a village. Kalik khetro means the land of Goddess Kali. Comparing other cities in India Kolkata was the 1 st city to offer underground services.

Kolkata is mainly a tourist destination from people all around the world. Each year thousands of people come and visit the city to experience its rich cultural heritage. From 1773 to 1911 Kolkata was the capital of British India.

If you are planning to come to Kolkata through air you have to book the flight for “Netaji Subash Chandra Bose International Airport”. The main city is twenty kilometres away from the airport. If you are planning to come through rail you have to book tickets for Howrah or Sealdah station that connects Kolkata to other major cities in the country.

Some of the best attractions to visit in Kolkata are the Victoria Memorial, Birla Planetarium, Nicco Park, Saheed Minar, Howrah Bridge, Writer’s Building, National Library, Fort Williams, Marble Palace and Botanical Gardens.

HistoriCity | How Kolkata evolved from three villages into the city of India’s renaissance

In a city most strongly identified by its deeply devotional worship of the female goddess, Kali, the ongoing protests should not come as a surprise: they circle back to earlier times and remind us of Kolkata’s rich history of protesting violence against women, and its heritage of reform.

The birth of a name

In 2003, the Calcutta high court ruled that Job Charnock, an officer of the East India Company was not the founder of West Bengal’s capital and that August 24, 1690 (the date of Charnock’s arrival in Calcutta) no longer be observed as the founding day of this maddeningly charming megalopolis. The court ruled that neither a particular date could be fixed nor a person identified as its founder.

Kolkata’s historical journey started out as a unit of three small villages including Kalikata a small fishing village; near a temple to Kali, the fierce Hindu goddess who rules over time or Kaal, and the consort of Shiva. The earliest known mention of Kalikata is believed to be recorded in the 15th-century Bengali text ‘ Manasa Vijay ’ (1495) by Bipradas Pipilai, a poet. Pipilai describes the visit of a legendary merchant Chand Sadagar alighting here to worship at the Kalighat temple.

The other two villages were Sutanuti, a weaver’s village and Gobindapur, belonging to a merchant family who were devoted Vaishnavites.

Following the advent of Colonial rule, Calcutta (renamed Kolkata in 2001), grew into a hub of Indian enlightenment and produced leading thinkers, writers and reformers. It produced a class of educated and westernised Indians who took up cudgels against centuries-old ignorance and made efforts to make the West’s knowledge of science accessible to the masses.

The British and beyond

To compete with the French and Portuguese, traders in the English East India Company decided on Kalikata as the site for their own headquarters or fort, in 1696. Land was acquired from a local landlord who himself had received it by the patronage of Raja Man Singh, during the reign of emperor Jahangir (1605-1627).

The young and defiant Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah routed British forces at Calcutta in 1756 and renamed Calcutta to Alinagar after his grandfather Alivardi Khan. During the siege, a group of European prisoners were locked up in a small barrack leading to their death, an incident which came to be known as the Black Hole of Calcutta. It was only a year later that Robert Clive recaptured the city, and after that, the British remained the rulers of the city for the next nearly three centuries, and Calcutta itself was the capital of British India till 1911.

The economic and social history of the city was marked by a critical period of growth, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries, and an influx of persons from different castes, classes and occupations, responding to the growing urbanisation and availability of employment opportunities.

The fight for women’s rights

Simultaneously, the interaction of the city and its elites with colonial power and their exposure to ideas of enlightenment precipitated what has been termed as the ‘Bengal Renaissance that led to social and cultural reform, the emergence of the bhadralok who left an indelible mark on the politics and culture of the state, and also the birth of the some of the most radical thinkers in India in the last few centuries. The women’s question, for instance, becomes a crucial part of the discourse on modernity.

Some of the most radical reform movements to emerge from colonial Bengal were those that protested the committing of violence against women in various forms, ranging from Sati, or the killing of widows by forcing them to immolate themselves in the funeral pyre of their deceased husbands, to child marriage. Rammohan Roy (1772-1833), who is remembered as the Father of Indian renaissance was one of the first Indians to publicly advocate for remarriage of widows, and call for a complete prohibition on the practice of Sati.

It was due to his efforts that the British enacted the Bengal Sati Regulation or Regulation XVII of 1829 which banned Sati. Less than three decades later the Hindu Widows’ Remarriage Act 1856 was passed. The reform movements spread across India and eventually, the third major gender-based legislation was passed: prohibiting the custom of child marriage in 1929. While Sati has nearly disappeared for good the other two remain social malaises, where child marriage remains worryingly prevalent in pockets across the country, and widows remain ostracised and shunned by their families.

It wasn’t just men fighting for women’s rights.

For Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain (1880–1932) a notable icon of feminist literature, a reformer of Bengali Muslim society and a pioneer of women’s empowerment, education was the best tool for empowerment. She started a school to educate girls in Calcutta in 1911 known as the Sakhawat Memorial Girls’ School, which is still in operation. In 1916, she also founded the Muslim Women’s Association or the Anjuman-e-Khwateen-e-Islam to provide financial and educational support to empower poor Bengali Muslim women.

These movements, naturally, had profound effects, which began to challenge the hegemonic beliefs that dichotomised men as naturally belonging to the public sphere and women to the domestic one.

The first shot of the 1857 Rebellion

A year later, at Barrackpore, just outside Calcutta, Mangal Pandey fired the first shot of the 1857 sepoy rebellion. Both Hindu and Muslim soldiers were incensed by the increasing British meddling in their religious, and therefore ‘internal’ affairs. The rebellion was put down brutally and the British crown took over the affairs of India by deposing the last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar. However, during these turbulent times reformers in Kolkata continued to crusade against religious obscurantism; condemning polygamy, denouncing casteism, and advocating for the right of Hindu widows to remarry. The city’s history, therefore, remains closely interwoven with its gender struggles, led by its reformers.

Radha Gobind Kar, the founder of the hospital, which has become the site of the latest upheaval in Bengal, was himself a social reformer, and part of that generation of Indians who adopted English education but ensured that the fruits of their own success reached the common masses. Kar, a medical doctor, founded the Calcutta School of Medicine in 1886, both as a nationalist act as well as an astute business venture. Here, classes were conducted in Bengali instead of English and top administrative posts were headed by Indians instead of Englishmen. He sought to make healthcare more accessible to the public and worked closely with figures like Sister Nivedita to ensure treatment for the poor during a plague outbreak.

Kolkata has been the nerve centre for cultural and social reform movements since the early modern period. The irony of this tragic incident, then, remains for all to see.

My City Kolkata

Kolkata is my beloved city. It is a big city through which the river Ganga flows. It is the capital of West Bengal. This city has a long history of culture and heritage. Kolkata is a very old city. The people of Kolkata are mainly Bengalis. In Kolkata many freedom fighters and social reformers like Raja Rammohan Roy, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Baghajatin and many others were born and brought up. The British ruled over this city for many years. Kolkata is known as the 'city of joy'. People of different caste, creed and religion live in harmony here. There are many exciting places to visit here. The National Library, Indian Museum, Alipore Zoological Garden, Marble Palace and Victoria Memorial Hall are some of them. People from all over the country come to visit these places. The British constructed the memorable Howrah Bridge which is still the main thoroughfare to reach Howrah. In Kolkata many festivals like Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Holi, Id and Christmas are celebrated. Durga Puja is the main festival of this city. This is celebrated for four to five consecutive days, depending on the calendar of that year. The main food of the people is rice and fish. Many other delicious dishes are made here too. People of Kolkata are famous for eating different types of sweets. Among these rasogolla and sondesh are very common. There are temples of goddess Kali at Kalighat and Dakshineswar. Churches and mosques are also found here. There is a lovely green golf course too. Despite the city being crowded I like my city very much because all my friends live here.

My City : A city where humans, trees, birds and other animals can grow with all their glories, imperfections, freedom, and creativity.

Kolkata has always been the city of joy and happiness. Kolkata has a rich cultural background, and the heritage associated with my city makes it valuable and beautiful. Kolkata, previously known as Calcutta, was the capital of India during the British rule. It is a city that has a rich cultural history and is the intellectual hub of India. The British made Calcutta the capital city because it was the center of education, business, and economics. Kolkata has produced brave hearts, which have fought our National Struggle ever so courageously and have helped get freedom from the British.

My city is unique, and it amazes me to think of how wholesome Kolkata truly is. It has everything one can wish for, and its people have a secure attachment to their city. Kolkata is famous for its lip-smacking food and ancient monuments, and it is also known as the City of Joy. Kolkata is the city of emotions and festivities.

Kolkata has her essence. Not everybody will recognize her true beauty. It is not as technologically advanced as Bangalore or as posh as Mumbai, but Kolkata is a city with a soul. She will touch you in ways unknown to humankind and will give you the solace you have always craved. Kolkata is excellent as a city. You can never get tired of Kolkata. Living here is like pursuing a long lost dream of culture and inheritance. Kolkata shapes you in the classiest ways possible.

Heritage colleges like the Presidency University, Rajabazar Science College, Jadavpur University, etc. ensure that students get an excellent education. Kolkata has tremendous patriotic fervor, and it was where the first students’ movement began. The colleges teach moral values besides academic curriculums. Students know what god for their country is.

Kolkata was also the central hub of the Naxalite movement. The city shapes people in a way that they refuse to accept injustice. Kolkata has a strong political base, and the people here would do anything to stand up for what is right. Apart from the educational role, Kolkata also has advanced business centers. Every year, a business meeting is organized in Kolkata, and the economy is strengthened.

My city has countless spectacles. Sitting by the river Ganges on a chilly winter night, staring at the city lights on the other side as cars and buses rush past us is surreal. Be it the iconic Rabindra Setu or the Dakshineshwar Temple, Kolkata has many structures that have endured the ravages of time.

Coming to historical monuments, Kolkata is home to the famous Victoria Memorial, which is one of the most celebrated monuments of all time. The Indian Museum, located near Esplanade, is again a structure that has mesmerized tourists. The Indian Museum is an excellent source of research and has countless wonders.

My city has woven its members in a string of love and values. Kolkata accepts everyone. The ever welcoming Academy Gates has given place to all artists with out-stretched arms. The smell of freshly brewed coffee in roadside cafes, the awe-striking Christmas decorations in Park Street, the inevitable Nostalgia in Coffee House, and the flood of amazing books in College Street, every bit of Kolkata inspires us to love ourselves and be better human beings.
