Michael W. Hall School of Mechanical Engineering, Mississippi State University

Approved by Faculty: November 19, 1993 September 2006 Adoption Updated by Faculty: August 2010, March 2011, May 2015

These guidelines complement the "Specific Degree Requirements--Doctor of Philosophy" as set forth in the Bulletin of the Mississippi State University Graduate School. Specific policies of the Michael W. Hall School of Mechanical Engineering for the various requirements of the Ph.D. program are as stated below. These requirements are discussed in chronological order.

I. Qualifying Examination

  • Students who have entered the ME Ph.D. program are required to take the PhD Qualifying Exams after they have completed 18 graduate course credit hours or within their first 3 years, whichever comes first.  The Ph.D. Qualifying Examination will be administered once every year during the Spring semester. The philosophy of the exam is to examine the student's ability to synthesize a breadth of information in relevant topic areas. The exam is prepared with the expectation that the student has a fundamental understanding of undergraduate information.
  • The Graduate Committee of the Department of Mechanical Engineering will administer the examination. The qualifying examination is composed of the following eight major topical areas of Mechanical Engineering, along with their supporting courses:
Fluid MechanicsEM 3313
Heat TransferME 3313
Thermodynamics ME 3513, ME 3523
Dynamics - VibrationsME 3613, ME 4643
Machine DesignME 4403
Solid Mechanics - Strength of MaterialsEM 3213
Materials EngineeringME 3403
Applied MathematicsME 3113, Calc., Lin. Alg., Diff. Eqn.
  • Prospective Ph.D. students must take and pass four of the eight areas. Students will select these four topics with the approval of their advisor. Applied Mathematics must be one of the four areas chosen. The written exam will require mastery of undergraduate engineering topics listed on the syllabi of supporting courses. Copies of past exams are available from the Graduate Committee Chairman, Dr. Doug Bammann. Students with technical questions on specific exam topics are encouraged to contact the instructors associated with supporting courses in the topic areas.
  • The Applied Mathematics examination will be closed-book format, while the examinations in all other topic areas will be open-textbook exams. Each subject test will be 3 hours long.
  • Each Exam Task Group will forward the results of their Examinations to the Graduate Committee. The Graduate Committee will make a recommendation to the Mechanical Engineering faculty at a scheduled faculty meeting on whether or not the student should pass or fail the Qualifying Exam. Determination of the final result for each student (pass, fail, qualified pass, etc.) shall be decided by a majority vote of the Mechanical Engineering faculty members present and voting at the faculty meeting.
  • Students failing a portion of the qualifying exam in their first attempt may be allowed to retake that portion of the exam during the next spring semester. Students who do not pass the retake-exam could, with the consent of their respective academic advisor(s), petition to re-apply to the Mechanical Engineering Department to enter the M.S. program.
  • Mechanical Engineering Ph.D. students will only be required to take and successfully pass the MSU Ph.D. Qualifying Exam once, regardless of the completion date of their Ph.D. degree.

II. Preliminary Examination and Dissertation Research Proposal

The preliminary examination for admission to candidacy for the Ph.D. degree consists of an oral examination that will be taken upon completion of course work and when the student's committee has approved the dissertation topic. The oral preliminary examination will also constitute the formal approval of the dissertation research proposal. A five to ten page synopsis of the research proposal must be submitted to the Mechanical Engineering faculty two weeks before the examination takes place.

The examining committee shall act as a “graduate committee of the whole” and will consist of the following persons:

  • Members of the student's committee
  • All other Mechanical Engineering faculty members with professorial rank

At the conclusion of the oral examination, each member of the examining committee will have the opportunity to discuss the student's suitability for admission to candidacy for the Ph.D. degree. After this discussion, a vote shall be taken by a show of hands, with each member of the examining committee having a vote. To pass the preliminary examination, the student must receive a favorable vote of two-thirds or greater of the examining committee members present and voting.

III. Final Examination

The final examination will be oral. The examining committee shall be composed of the student's committee and a representative of the Graduate School.

The examination will consist of an open and closed portion. During the open portion, the dissertation research results will be presented by the student in a fifty (50) minute seminar at which attendance will be unrestricted. Questions from the audience will be in order. Upon completion of the open question period, the examining committee will go into closed session with the student for further questions and discussion.

After both the open and closed sessions are completed, a vote will be taken with each member of the examining committee having a vote. In order to pass, the student must receive no more than one dissenting vote.

Master of Public Health

Student in lab coat

The Master of Public Health with a focus on Nutrition prepares students to acquire skills in nutrition practice and communication together with foundational knowledge in nutritional science and public health. Public Health Nutrition aims to promote the overall nutritional health among a population by exploring an array of influences on diet, nutrition, and health as socioeconomic, political, cultural, and environmental factors. Students in this non-thesis, professional degree program will complete a minimum of 42 hours of course work in nutrition, epidemiology, and health promotion through lecture courses, field experience, and a scholarly report. The Applied Public Health Practicum course will consist of no less than 240 contact hours of supervised field-based experience in public health sites. This program will prepare those in the nutrition field for work in public health, public policy, and national nutrition programs.

This new degree program will begin enrolling students in August 2022. Accreditation from the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) will be sought for this major. The accreditation process is typically three years from the time of application. The Master of Public Health is a professional degree and offered on-campus only. Students interested in a Master of Science degree may consider our Health Promotion graduate study , which focuses on a social and ecological approach to health, health education and health promotion with both thesis and non-thesis as well as on-campus and distance learning options.

Occupational Outlook Handbook : Employment in healthcare occupations is projected to grow 15 percent from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations, adding about 2.4 million new jobs. Healthcare occupations are projected to add more jobs than any of the other occupational groups. This projected growth is mainly due to an aging population, leading to greater demand for healthcare services. The median annual wage for healthcare practitioners and technical occupations (such as registered nurses, physicians and surgeons, and dental hygienists) was $69,870 in May 2020, which was higher than the median annual wage for all occupations in the economy of $41,950.

The Master of Public Health in Nutrition also prepares students to lay the foundation for pursuing further certifications and degrees. For example, Master of Public Health Nutrition students may pursue a career as Dietitians and Nutritionists. Effective 2024, a minimum of a master’s degree is required to become a registered dietitian nutritionists. Students with a Master of Public Health degree may complete a separate dietetic internship to be qualified for a registered dietitian exam.

Public health nutritionists may find jobs in a number of settings:

February 1 for August graduation

  • The student’s graduate committee serves as the examining committee, except for programs where the examining committee is prescribed. The student or a committee member may request that the Graduate School appoint an outside observer to attend the comprehensive/ preliminary examination.
  • One negative vote will not constitute failure for a student on a preliminary/comprehensive examination. Two negative votes will constitute failure for a student on a preliminary/comprehensive examination.
  • The student's committee must complete and submit the examination results report form no later than one week from the date of the pass/fail decision. This form must be submitted by the deadline stated in the Graduate Academic Calendar for the student to be eligible for graduation. The form must be submitted by a faculty or staff member of the program.
  • A student who fails this examination can apply to schedule a date for another examination after a period of three months has elapsed from the date of the original examination. Two failures on this examination will result in the student being dropped from further consideration as a doctoral candidate, unless the program has a different requirement.

A doctoral student is admitted to candidacy when the student successfully passes the preliminary/comprehensive exam. A student's time frame for completing the degree will begin in the semester following Admission to Candidacy.

Please refer to the Graduate Committee Section.

Degree Requirements–Ph.D.

Degree Requirements The requirements for the Ph.D. in English include 24 hours of course work beyond the master’s degree or 42 hours of coursework beyond the bachelor’s degree (additional courses may be required by the Graduate Admission Committee on an individual basis); 18 hours of dissertation credit; successful completion of the Qualifying Procedure (which consists of a publishable article, an oral examination based on a literary-historical reading list, and successful oral defense of a dissertation prospectus); and the successful oral defense of a dissertation.

All students pursuing coursework for the Ph.D. should expect to meet with the Director of Graduate Studies at least once a year to discuss their progress. All students who enter the Ph.D. program without an M.A. will meet with the Director of Graduate Studies at the end of their second year of coursework, at which point a nonbinding recommendation will be made about continuing to move towards the Qualifying Procedure. For students who are admitted to the doctoral program without an M.A., the committee will vote during the second step of the Qualifying Procedure (the oral examination) whether to award an M.A. in passing. All course work must be completed before a student may submit any portion of the Qualifying Procedure.

For all students pursuing the Ph.D., ENG 600: Introduction to Graduate Study is required during the first fall semester of enrollment in full standing. Graduate students serving as instructors of record in first-year composition courses are required to complete ENG 617: Teaching College English (typically during the Spring semester of the first year). Students must take 6 hours of course work in English or American literature before 1800 ;  6 hours of English or American literature after 1800; and up to 6 hours of graduate course work in related disciplines and/or independent study/directed reading. Application deadlines for directed reading courses in the fall and spring semesters are, respectively, April 1 and November 1.

Foreign Language Requirement Depending on the student’s area of specialization and dissertation topic, a student may, at the behest of the Ph.D. committee, be asked to demonstrate reading competency in one or more foreign languages.

PhD Committee Each student, working in collaboration with the director of graduate studies, puts together a Ph.D. committee, comprised of three members of the English department graduate faculty whose teaching and research interests complement the student’s own plans for doctoral study. (The faculty members chosen must agree to serve on the committee.) The student and his or her Ph.D. committee are expected to design an individual program of study which contributes significantly to the student’s familiarity with the broad scope of literary history; and with areas such as linguistics, rhetoric, theory, methodology, criticism, canonicity, and the reciprocities between literature and culture. The responsibilities of the Ph.D. committee include supervising foreign language study; setting, administering, and evaluating the Candidacy Examination and admitting the student to candidacy; evaluating the dissertation prospectus; supervising and approving dissertation work; conducting and evaluating the oral dissertation defense; and recommending the conferral of both the M.A. and the Ph.D. degrees. A fourth (extradepartmental) examiner works with the committee to evaluate the candidate’s work from the prospectus stage forward. (See Dissertation Prospectus.)

PhD Candidacy Qualifying Procedures Candidacy for the PhD follows successful completion of the Qualifying Procedures, as outlined below. The entire qualifying procedure should be completed within 18 months after the completion of coursework . A form for establishing the Qualifying Procedure Timeline can be found HERE ; completed forms will be kept on file in the English Department.

Qualifying Procedure, Step 1: Publishable Article Under oversight of the dissertation committee, candidate will undertake the revision of a seminar paper into a publishable article. For the purposes of this exercise, “publishable” describes a paper that:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of a significant question in a particular field;
  • Offers a coherent and sustained contribution to a current critical discussion; and
  • Demonstrates candidate’s ability to move between detailed literary analysis of primary text and relevant critical/historical/theoretical contexts.

The final result should be the length of a standard article (20-25 pages) and follow a recognized bibliographic style. In cases where a student has already published an article in a recognized professional journal, student may petition dissertation committee to count this earlier article as fulfillment of Step 1. Final discretion in such cases remains entirely with the dissertation committee. Step 1 should be complete by no later than the end of the first semester following the completion of coursework.

Qualifying Procedure, Step 2: Historical Period List and Oral Exam Passage of the oral exam indicates candidate has attained a working knowledge of a literary-historical period. This exam must be formally scheduled with the graduate school HERE . Each field exam covers a standard, committee-approved list of 70-100 significant works. (See links below for further details regarding lists by field.) The Graduate Committee recommends that candidate bring to the exam two mock syllabi—one for an introductory survey of historical field and one a course on a more focused special topic—and that these documents provide the foundation for the opening discussion. A failed oral may be retaken once; a second failure will result in dismissal from the program. Step 2 should be complete by no later than the end of the second semester following completion of coursework.

  • Medieval ( List A / List B )
  • Early Modern British
  • Restoration and Eighteenth Century British
  • Early American
  • Nineteenth-Century American
  • Nineteenth-Century British
  • Twentieth- and Twenty-First-Century American ( Core | Longer )
  • Twentieth- and Twenty-First-Century Century British
  • African-American Literature
  • World Anglophone and/or Postcolonial Literatures

Step 3: Special Topic List, Prospectus, and Prospectus Defense The special topic list forms the bibliographic backbone for the dissertation. The special topic list should consist of 35-50 works, both primary (i.e. literary texts) and include critical, historical, and/or theoretical texts relevant to the proposed dissertation.

After the dissertation committee has approved the special topic list, candidate may begin work on the prospectus. Prospectus should be a 15-30 page document (including bibliography) detailing the main argument of the proposed dissertation, offering a review of relevant scholarship that makes the project’s contribution clear, and providing an abstract of the individual chapters. Completed prospectus should be submitted to the full dissertation committee (i.e. including extra-departmental member).

After submitting the prospectus to the committee, candidate should schedule a prospectus defense. The defense needs to be formally scheduled with the graduate school HERE . The defense, in which all four members of the dissertation committee serve as examiners, is designed to ensure that candidate has a solid grasp of basic dissertation materials and to help refine the project. It is ordinarily between 30 and 60 minutes in length. Step 3 should be complete by no later than the end of the third semester following completion of coursework .

Dissertation The candidate is required to complete a book-length research project that makes an original and significant contribution to the field of literary studies. After the dissertation is completed and approved, the Ph.D. committee and the outside examiner will conduct an oral dissertation defense, which the candidate must pass before conferral of the degree is recommended

Renaissance and Early Modern Studies Emphasis Students may receive a Ph.D. with an emphasis in Renaissance and Early Modern Studies by completing 21 hours of graduate course work in Renaissance and/or Early Modern Studies, including a minimum of nine hours in the English Department and a minimum of nine hours outside the English Department, and submitting a dissertation on a Renaissance or Early Modern subject. With the exception of the 6-hour requirement in literature after 1800 and the 6-hour limit on graduate course work in related disciplines, students must also satisfy all other general program requirements for the Ph.D. in English.
