Both of these styles are generally in stock for immediate shipment.   The basic Deluxe Doctoral Robe has black fabric and your choice of either Black Velvet or Ph.D. Blue Velvet (Deluxe Ph.D. Gown) and is pictured below:       The cost of either of the above gowns is $290.00 We generally have the above gowns in both black velvet and/ or Ph.D. blue velvet (your choice) IN STOCK to ship right away! Or if you prefer, we can add piping to your gown: The cost for piping is + $75.00 (so doctoral gown with piping costs $290 + 75.00 = $365.00).       Either of the gowns pictured above with Gold Piping is $365.00 and generally in stock !   Online Doctoral Gown Order Form     Optional Customization of Your Doctoral Robe Other customization options include changing the fabric of your gown from black to a different color:             Or we can keep the fabric black but change the velvet of your gown -- Or we can change the velvet and add piping --             Or we can change the fabric and the velvet and add piping -- It's all up to you.     Piping or other customizaiton generally takes about 8 weeks, however if you are in a rush, we can probably send you a loaner gown while the custom doctoral robe is being made. Mortarboards are available at no charge (with purchase of gown), however most Faculty members purchase Tams . Doctoral Tams are $92.00 with the gold bullion Tassel; or $78.50 with the silky Tassel. Tams are available in choice of four-sided; six-sided; or 8-sided models. Black doctoral Tams are generally IN STOCK in all sizes for immediate shipment. When ordering a tam, we will need to know your head size (or hat size), whether you want a 4 sided; 6 sided; or 8 sided tam, and which Tassel you want with it. Doctoral Tams can also be special made in other than black velvet (i.e. Ph.D. Tams using Ph.D. blue velvet to match the blue velvet on our deluxe Ph.D. gowns ) for $20.00 additional.   Online Doctoral Tam Order Form     We also make custom Academic Graduation Hoods - Ph.D. hoods and doctoral hoods for all degrees (Ed.D.; J.D.; M.D.; D.Sci; D.Div; etc). The cost for a deluxe hood is $130.00 When ordering an academic hood , please be sure to include your degree (so we'll know which color velvet to use) and which school you graduated from. Also please include the location of your school, since oftentimes, the school colors may vary within the same university, between one campus and another. If you are ordering a gown with piping, you may wish to add piping to your hood as well. The cost for a deluxe doctoral hood with piping is $145.00     Although most hoods are made to order (and therefore take +/- 8 weeks to make), if you need to wear your regalia sooner than that, we may be able to send you a loaner hood together with your Cap and Gown that you can wear until you receive your real hood. Gowns with velvet changes, fabric changes or piping would take +/- 6 weeks to make. If you would like to order a customized gown, but cannot wait, we may be able to send you a loaner gown at no charge, which you could return upon receipt of your custom gown.

Don't forget your tam! If you are purchasing a VIP Economy, Classic, or Deluxe gown, and you do not purchase a tam at the time of your order, then a VIP Economy Mortarboard Cap will be sent to you with your order.

We recommend Full Figured (Plus sized) gowns for

• individuals up to 5 ft  2" who are over 180 pounds;
• individuals up to 5' 5" who are over 220 lbs;
• individuals up to 5' 8" who are over 240 lbs;
• individuals up to 5' 11" who are over 270 lbs;
• or any one over 320 lbs.
• Additionally, heights 6' 9" or taller are considered Full Figured.

If you fit in any of these categories, please be sure to indicate your weight together with your height, and to mention in your order that you require a plus (full figure) gown.

When it comes to PhD regalia, there is a range of different gowns and accessories to choose from.

At Marston Robing, we offer Doctoral gowns, hoods and bonnets in three styles – PhD, QMUL, and London PhD. Our gown sizes are designed to fit individuals from 5’0 to 7’0 ft tall. To find your doctoral graduation gown size please take a look at our gown size chart .

You can also order a Tudor Bonnet from us, a traditional Doctoral graduation hat. The Tudor Bonnet is soft, comfortable and features an adjustable inner headband. You can choose from a velvet or cloth fabric in black, red or royal blue.

Regalia Information

Academic regalia are the traditional dress for degree candidates participating in college, school and department convocations, as well as the university-wide commencement ceremony.

Additional information about the University Book Center and regalia can be found on the University Book Center website .

For those earning a bachelor’s degree, a black gown and mortarboard are worn. A black tassel with a custom UMCP medallion is attached. A custom UMCP red stole completes the regalia for bachelor’s degree candidates.

Master’s degree students wear a modified gown with longer sleeves, the mortarboard with an attached UMCP black tassel, custom UMCP red stole, and a hood. The hood color represents your specific degree or discipline.

The most elaborate regalia on display at Commencement are worn by those receiving a doctoral degree. A doctor's gown is a much fuller gown and is decorated with velvet lapels and three chevrons. In place of the mortarboard, doctoral students wear a tam, a velvet hat with a tassel attached that is much less rigid in construction.

Doctoral regalia is unique in the sense that it is often worn many times following the degree recipient's own graduation, especially for those who pursue careers in academia. It distinguishes the faculty member as a graduate of a specific institution. As is common for many universities, unique doctoral regalia was designed and customized for the University of Maryland College Park. Doctoral regalia may be purchased or rented.

Doctoral Candidates who are undecided or pending defense are strongly encouraged to request a rental gown before the deadline. Payment is deferred until rental regalia is picked-up.

Ordering and Purchasing Regalia

On campus (university book center).

Academic regalia is available for purchase from the University Book Center (UBC) beginning November 30 . The UBC will continue to provide regalia services up until Spring commencement (May 20, 2024). We strongly suggest purchasing early, as gown sizing and hood colors may be limited as the ceremony date approaches. Along with full regalia packages, the UBC will stock individual pieces, including the tassel, stole, and hood.

Doctoral Rental gown requests can be submitted through this form . Doctoral Rental gowns will be available for pick-up beginning May 10, 2024. Contact Deddisun Won at [email protected] for early rental options or other questions.

Order Online (Oak Hall)

Regalia will be available to purchase online directly from Oak Hall for a limited time. Orders will ship directly to the customer. Please allow up to 30 days for bachelor's and master's packages and nine weeks for custom doctoral gowns. Shipping charge will apply.

The University Book Center will host a Graduation Fair on March 5 & 6, 2024 , from 10:30 AM – 5:30 PM at the University Book Center in Adele H Stamp Student Union. The event will provide an opportunity to purchase regalia, order announcements, and class rings. Students can learn more about the senior class gift initiative and ways to participate and receive special pricing on diploma frames. Other services include custom doctoral regalia fittings, professional photography, and young alumni travel agency.

Faculty Resources

The UBC will coordinate and order bulk department rental requests. Please contact your department’s commencement coordinator for assistance or visit the UBC bookstore for more information.

The UBC will handle tax-exempt orders and all bulk department faculty, staff, and administration regalia rentals. Requests are due no later than April 17 and will be available for pick-up the week of May 13 . The rented regalia must be returned to the University Book Center no later than June 4, 2024 , to avoid a $200 non-returned vendor fee.

For Individual faculty, staff, and administration Rentals , the ordering link will be available below from March 4 until April 17, 2024.

All online orders are shipped to the UBC for pick-up. Orders are prepaid online.

The UBC will offer a full refund for regalia returned no later than May 17, 2024 , in its original condition with proof of purchase.

Bachelor's degree regalia must be purchased by April 12.

New in 2022, the custom black masters gown now has burnt orange flat braiding down the front paneling. The hood is often presented to the degree recipient within the convocation ceremony. Doctoral regalia must be purchased by March 1. These items are custom-made and require approximately eight weeks to produce. 

Doctoral candidates who wish to rent regalia must do so by March 29.

The academic dress worn by graduates during Commencement dates back to the Middle Ages when flowing gowns kept scholars warm in cold and drafty buildings.

Modern graduates traditionally also wear a cap (in medieval times, an emblem of intellectual independence) to complete the ceremonial ensemble. Elements of the regalia are different depending upon the level of the degree being awarded.

Most are based on the American Council on Education’s Academic Costume Code and are standardized across the nation.

The Cap and Gown Agency makes arrangements to provide academic apparel for those who plan to participate in University Commencement exercises.

Regalia orders may be placed online using a credit card or student account.

Information for Yale College Students

If you are receiving a bachelor’s degree, you will need a cap, gown, and tassel. If you expect to receive a master’s degree in addition to your bachelor’s degree, you will need a hood as well. Cap, gown, tassel, and hood (if applicable) are yours to keep. Academic attire is worn to Baccalaureate ceremony, in addition to Class Day exercises and Commencement.

Retainable gowns are made of 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles, using “GreenWeaver” technology developed by Oak Hall Industries of Salem, Virginia.

If students miss the April 10 deadline, a minimal number of extra caps, gowns, and hoods will be available during regalia distribution. All extras will be on a first-come, first-served basis.  At that time, an additional $10.00 late fee will be added to the attire cost. Only credit card payments will be accepted.

There will be a very limited number of extra caps, gowns, and hoods available during regalia distribution.  All extras will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Regalia will be distributed Tuesday, May 14 through Monday, May 20 from Payne Whitney Gymnasium, 80 Tower Parkway.

Students receiving graduate degrees are expected to wear a hood representing both the institution granting the degree and the degree granted.

Retainable regalia, as opposed to rental regalia, will be available to all students. Caps, gowns, and hoods, therefore, will be yours to keep and need not be returned at the end of the day. Retainable gowns are made of 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles, using “GreenWeaver” technology developed by Oak Hall Industries of Salem, Virginia.

Please note that all retainable robes are black and that retainable gowns and hoods are intended for relatively limited use. Degree candidates who wish to purchase custom Yale regalia (i.e., “Yale blue” doctoral or master’s gown, faille hood, doctoral tam, or cap) may order directly from the Customs Department of Oak Hall Industries by calling 1-800-223-0429. Please note that “Yale blue” gowns are not available through the student Cap & Gown Agency

A Guide to Academic Regalia

The following academic attire may be worn on appropriate occasions by holders of degrees from Yale University. When blue material is used, it must be the shade known as “Yale blue,” preserved in the Office of the Secretary of Yale University. “Yale blue” gowns and hoods may not be made without having the color and style approved by the University Secretary.

Yale University Degree Colors

Liberal Arts (B.A., M.A.) — white Science (B.S., M.S.) — gold-yellow Architecture — blue-violet Art and Drama — brown Divinity — scarlet Forestry — russet Law — purple Management — sapphire blue Medicine — green Music — pink Nursing — apricot Public Health — salmon pink Engineering — orange

The color for Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Philosophy degrees, regardless of department, is dark blue.

Material—the same as that of the gown Color—black, lined with “Yale blue” material; anterior edge trim is color of degree Length—three feet long for bachelor’s degree, three and one-half feet long for master’s degree, four feet long with side panels for doctor’s degree Trim—anterior edge bound in velvet two, three, or five inches wide representing, respectively, bachelor’s, master’s or doctor’s degree

The cap for all degrees is a mortarboard of black cloth. The tassel is either black or degree color. The doctor’s tassel may be of gold thread or gold metal. In use, the tassel remains on the left side.

Please note that “Yale blue” custom gowns are available for purchase only. All rented and retainable gowns provided by the Cap and Gown Agency are black.

Bachelor’s degree—black, untrimmed, with open, pointed sleeves Master’s degree—black or blue, untrimmed, with oblong sleeves open at wrist Doctor’s degree—black or blue with velvet facing, bell sleeves, three velvet bars on each sleeve. If the gown is black, the facing and bars are usually black, but may be the degree color. If the gown is blue, the facing and bars must be black.

Ph.D., M.D., D.F.A. D.M.A., or Dr.P.H..—black or “Yale blue” doctor’s gown with appropriate doctor’s hood. Cap tassel may be gold or degree color. J.S.D..—black or “Yale blue” doctor’s gown with appropriate doctor’s hood. Cap tassel may be gold or purple. Recipients who took their prior professional degree at an institution other than Yale may wear a black doctor’s gown or a gown suitable to that institution. LL.M., S.T.M.—black or “Yale blue” doctor’s gown with appropriate master’s hood. Cap tassel may be black or degree color. Recipients who took their prior professional degree at an institution other than Yale may wear a black doctor’s gown or a gown suitable to that institution. International Shipping

We will ship to some foreign locations. Such locations generally include Canada, Europe, South America, Japan and a few other locations. You can check if your country is available by simulating placing an order on our website. We can also place the order over the phone if you do not find your country. However because such shipments often involve the peculiarities of the various tariffs trade and import/export laws around the globe we may not be able to ship some orders overseas due to the cost of researching the laws for that location. Also if possible it is always easier for us to ship to a US-based shipping address and you will always save on shipping costs if you can arrange for a US-based address to receive the shipment. At this time due to advice from our bank concerning trends in fraud we reserve all rights to deny or proceed with orders shipping internationally.

RETURN AND EXCHANGE POLICY 

If a return is accepted, due to COVID-19, it can only be used as store credit at this time or be used towards an exchange for another size or product. Any products that have been worn or used many not qualify for store credit. Due to COVID-19 it is not safe for customers and we are not able to resell any returned items. Any returns that fall within our usual return policy will be used as future store credit. 

All returns must be authorized through this link, please provide your order number and email address. 

All products and packaging must be in new original condition with unopened packages and original packing materials and may not be returned used, worn or altered in any way. No exceptions for return if the packages are opened or/and worn.

All shipping, handling and processing charges for your original order are non-refundable. It is the responsibility of the customer to pay any return/exchange shipping. Once we receive your exchange, we will give you a call to process the payment of the exchange shipping cost.

On all returned merchandise a 13% restocking fee will be applied.All returned product(s) must be returned/ received within 7 business days of return approval date. A delay will result in complete forfeiture of your return. 

Requests for returns must be made within 14 days from the date of receipt of your order.

Registered return shipping of products which are returned is the responsibility of the customer.Your return will be processed within 7-10 days. 

All custom items/apparel cannot be returned and are non-refundable, this is because these items are made from custom fabrics or have custom printing with your personal information, therefore cancellations are not accepted after your order has been submitted.

Requests to return/exchange products due to quality issue must be made within 14 days of delivery or we will not able to accept any return (received wrong item, color, size and other company error...), please send any evidence to [email protected], we will resolve the problem as soon as possible.

Products that are not eligible for returns are clearly marked as “On Sale” on the Product page for that Product. All products on sale are non-refundable, however can be exchanged for the same credit amount.

Frequently asked questions

What is the material of your gowns washing instructions.

Our gowns are all made of 100% polyester. Purely made polyester, like our products, is extremely strong, extremely durable and has excellent properties such as being hydrophobic in nature that leads to quick-drying and stain resistance.

We recommend dry cleaning for all of our products in order to keep the integrity of the garment. However, our products can be washed in a machine using the gentle cycle or handwashed. For drying, please hang dry. The material can be ironed on a low setting.

What is the difference between matte and shiny?

The main difference is the finish of the fabric. Our shiny gowns are a knitted fabric that has more of a shiny look to it giving the color of the gowns more brightness. Our matte gowns are a woven fabric which has more of a flat dull finish. 

How do I know what gown's color to choose?

Please contact your educational institution, as we currently do not have access to school colors.

What is the difference between the Deluxe and the classic/matte gown?

Our Deluxe gowns have fluting around the shoulders and yoke. They have more fabric used so they tend to be heavier. This is true for all of our deluxe gowns. 

The deluxe master has a different shape for the batwings. 

The deluxe doctor has bell sleeves and a braided button to attach the hood whereas the classic does not.

We cannot do an embroidered chest emblem on the classic doctor. 

Overall, the deluxe is considered a higher quality gown for your regalia.

What if my school orders with a different company?

We welcome anyone to order with us! Although, we cannot give assurance or be held responsible for our gowns’ colours matching another company’s gowns. We provide unique shades of gowns are not the same with another vendor's products.

The color does not match my university regalia?

We do not color match. We have a very specific set of fabrics. We cannot guarantee that our fabric colors will match with another supplier’s fabrics.

You can email us the color that you need, we will get back to you with a closed match. 

We can color match some products if a bulk order is placed.

How to select my Graduation gown size?

You need to provide us with each customer's height with shoes on for the gown and weight. You do not need to provide cap size as our standard caps are one size fits all with elastic. Please see the our size chart . 

Do you offer plus sizes?

We do have regular and full-fit sizes. We have plus sizes in 45, 48, 51, 54, 57, and 63. Please refer to the measuring instructions link for more information on our sizing.

Can I customize my gown?

From Pre-K to High School/Bachelor regular gowns, we do not offer other colors than the ones listed on the website. If you are looking to order more than 1000pcs, please email us the Pantone color and we will get back to you.

If you need to add a logo or letters on regular gowns, please email us the specifications and we will get back to you with a quote and estimated delivery date. 

For Deluxe Bachelor, Master gowns, we do offer custom colors and embroidery with no minimum order required. Please email us what you are looking to order and we will provide you a quote. 

For Doctoral gowns, we offer a listing where you can customize your own gown. You can select your gown color, piping color, add embroidery, etc... If you do not see an option that you would like to add on your gown, please email us and we will check if we are able to process your request.

What does piping mean for the gown/hood?

Piping is an embroidered thread around the velvet of a gown or hood.

Why would I need a 4th Chevron on my doctorate gown?

The 4th Chevron is for the Chancellor or President of a University. If you are neither, do not select "Add 4th Chevron" to your doctorate gown.

How do I select my hood's colors?

There is no standardized and unified published listing available of all current school colors.

While GraduationAttire does maintain a color chart for degree velvet colors there is no true substitute for contacting your school directly and asking them what colors they are currently using for your graduation apparel. Schools can and sometimes do change their colors on a yearly basis (and even the color of the gown itself).

The lining and chevron (satin fabric) represent your school colors. The shell is the material of hood which is always black (polyester fabric, matte finish). The velvet color represents your specific degree or field of study.

Please note for Associate Degree, you only need to select the lining and chevron colors (no velvet color required). 

You always need to choose the colors based on your highest level of education or current school you are attending.

How do I wear my hood?

Place it over your head draping off your shoulders and across the back of your gown. The velvet edge should be on the outside visible from the back. Make sure the lining (field and chevron school colors) are turned out so that people can see from the back your university colors. Usually this is done by turning the velvet trim to the outside at the back just below your shoulders. If you ordered a professional / faculty hood there will be a cord in the back (with two buttons one on each side of the hood) to keep your hood in place and a cord in the front to keep the hood away from your neck. Fasten the front cord to a shirt or dress button. Finally make sure the fabric shell of the hood is smoothed down and lays flat against the back of your robe. 

Do you offer different sizes for caps/tams/ beefeaters? Are they adjustable? What are they made of?

Our caps are made of 100% polyester. 

We provide caps in two sizes: Adult and Child.

They measure 9"x9".

The caps are not adjustable.

What is the difference between 4, 6 or 8 sided tam?

The level of education attained by the wearer is indicated by the varying number of sides on a tam. Master's graduates commonly wear four or six-sided tams, with the specific choice often determined by the school. It's advisable to verify the appropriate tam style before making a purchase. Tams with six sides are suitable for programs like Ed.S (education specialist) that fall between Master's and Ph.D. Eight-sided tams are typically reserved for Doctoral programs.

What is beefeater?

A beefeater, also referred to as a Tudor Bonnet, is a premium hat usually reserved for esteemed officials overseeing graduation ceremonies (deans, presidents, etc...). The standard mortarboard, a square of cardboard encased in polyester, is worn atop the head and traditionally used for primary and secondary school graduations. In contrast, tams are more commonly chosen for advanced graduations like Ed.S and doctoral ceremonies, and occasionally for master's degrees.

Can I customize my diploma cover?

Yes, you can with a minimum order of 8 pcs. Please email us with the details of your diploma covers and we can provide you a quote and estimated delivery date.

What does debossed mean for diploma covers?

Debossing typically refers to the process of creating a raised or indented design on the surface of the cover. This is achieved by using a die (a metal or other hard material) to press the design into the material of the cover, creating a textured and visually appealing result.

In the case of diploma covers, debossing is often used to add a tactile and elegant element to the cover. It can be used to feature the school's emblem, logo, or other decorative elements. The debossed design is usually slightly indented into the material, providing a subtle and sophisticated look and feel to the diploma cover.

How do I know which diploma cover to buy?

We recommend checking with your school which color and size to get or you can measure your diploma as well.

I lost my diploma, can I order one on the website?

Please contact your school directly for a copy of your diploma.

Do you offer blank diploma?

Yes we do. Please check our stock diplomas for Kindergarten through High School.

What is a graduation stole? Can I wear a stole for my graduation?

What is a graduation tassel?

A graduation tassel is a dangling ornament typically made of silk or a similar material and attached to a loop at the top. It is commonly worn as part of the cap and gown ensemble during graduation ceremonies. The tassel is attached to the mortarboard, which is the square-shaped cap worn by graduates.

The color of the graduation tassel often holds symbolic meaning and may represent the graduate's academic discipline, school colors, or specific achievements. During the commencement ceremony, graduates typically begin with their tassels on one side of the cap (often the right side) and then move them to the other side (often the left side) upon receiving their diplomas. This symbolic gesture signifies the transition from being a candidate to a graduate.

In some cases, graduates may receive special tassels to denote honors, awards, or specific accomplishments. Overall, the graduation tassel is a traditional and symbolic accessory that adds a sense of ceremony and visual distinction to the cap and gown worn during graduation celebrations.

Do you offer customized tassels and year date drops?

What is a jumbo tassel?

Jumbo bullion tassels, characterized by their increased thickness, are specifically employed on college tams. These tams often symbolize the field of study pursued by the student.

Can the year charm on the tassel be removed or changed?

Year Date Drops can easily be removed and reapplied yourself at home.

What is a graduation honor cord?

A graduation honor cord is a decorative accessory worn by graduates during commencement ceremonies to signify academic achievements, honors, or affiliations. Honor cords are typically made of intertwined cords of various colors, and they are worn around the neck with the ends hanging down the front of the graduate's gown.

The colors of the cords often carry specific meanings, representing different academic achievements or honors. For example, honor cords might indicate graduation with honors, membership in an honor society, participation in specific programs, or other notable accomplishments. The specific color combinations can vary widely between institutions and organizations. We recommend checking with your school with colors you need to select for your honor cords. 

Graduates who have earned the right to wear honor cords often do so with pride as a visible symbol of their academic achievements. Honor cords add a personalized and meaningful element to the graduation regalia, allowing students to showcase their accomplishments and distinctions during the ceremony.

What is a double honor cord?

A double cord consists of two individual cords joined together at the center, with the knot positioned at the back of the graduate's neck.

The color of the tassel plus the velvet border on the hood correspond to the type of doctoral degree (PhD: dark blue. AuD: sage. EdD: light blue. DNP: apricot. DPT: teal. DSW: citron. PharmD: olive. JD/LLM: purple).

What to Wear to the Commencement Ceremony

At the commencement ceremony, you will continue an age-old tradition by wearing the same caps, gowns, cords and hoods as generations of Buffs before you. Discover what and how to purchase to prepare for commencement.

Undergraduate Regalia

If you’re graduating with your bachelor’s degree, you will wear a black gown, a black cap and a colored tassel indicating your field of study.

If you’re graduating with your master’s or doctoral degree, you will wear a black gown and a hood lined with velvet trim denoting your field of study. Master’s students will wear a mortarboard cap and a black tassel. Doctoral students will wear a tam and a gold tassel.

The University of Colorado Boulder welcomes Native American and Indigenous students and their families to wear and display traditional Native American or Indigenous regalia at graduation. Regalia might include accessories such as beads, jewelry, feathers or leis, and clothes, blankets and footwear. Only enrolled members of a federally recognized tribe should wear or possess eagle feathers.

Donate Your Cap & Gown
