Kushi Review: Love Story Banks On Vijay Deverakonda's Chemistry With Samantha Ruth Prabhu
Kushi review: the film's primary theme hinges on a faith versus science debate, a phenomenon that plays spoilsport in the lives of a married couple essayed by vijay and samantha..
A still from Kushi . (courtesy: thedeverakonda )
Romance, melodrama and liberal doses of comedy coalesce in the uneven but visually arresting Kushi , written and directed by Shiva Nirvana. The film's primary theme hinges on a faith versus science debate, a phenomenon that plays spoilsport in the lives of a married couple essayed by Vijay Deverakonda and Samantha Ruth Prabhu.
If that sounds like an promising premise - it is definitely interesting to begin with - the film uses it only as a plot element to underscore the fact that a clash of worldviews can ruin a relationship. But since Kushi is a love story designed to give Vijay Deverakonda's fans value for money, it finds a way of restoring order. It ties up in knots at times because the route it takes to a denouement would have been dismissed as convoluted had it not been visible from a mile away.
The male protagonist, Viplav, works in a telephone exchange in Kashmir, where he chances upon Ara "Begum" (Samantha Ruth Prabhu) and falls in love with her. She tries her best to fob him off. The lover boy isn't one to give up easily. The lady comes around to his overtures soon enough.
But, hang on, this isn't about an inter-faith relationship of the kind at the heart of Mani Ratnam's Bombay - there are plenty of references to the veteran filmmaker and his work strewn across Kushi. Turns out that Ara "Begum" is Aradhya, a girl from a conservative upper caste Hindu family. Her father, Chadarangam Srinivasa Rao (Murali Sharma), is a man of religion and conservative to the core.
Trouble erupts in paradise because Viplav's father Lenin Sathya (Sachin Khedekar) is an atheist who will have none of what Aradhya's family suggests as a prerequisite to their marriage. With no option left, Aradhya and Viplav get hitched against the wishes of their fathers.
It is all hunky dory as long as the honeymoon lasts, but once the reality of their conflicting backgrounds kicks in things begin to turn sour. Matters aren't helped when pregnancy complications arise and give the orthodox Hindu religious preacher-patriarch a stick to beat the rationalist with.
The Telugu-language Kushi (also released in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi) would have been quite a film had it opted to devote more thought and space to the conflict between superstition and rationalism. It goes down that path for a bit but veers away all too soon.
Kushi throws too many balls up in the air. A few of them just vanish without a trace. What doesn't is a comedy track designed that is designed to that liven up the proceedings. It serves its purpose to a point but also tends to dilute the principal burden of the story.
Sachin Khedekar and Murali Sharma give their roles their best shots. Unfortunately, because of the way they are written, the two characters are no more than caricatures that stand for two opposing viewpoints. Their clash is a mere contrivance and not really the centre of the film. That robs Kushi of the chance of being a romantic drama with a real difference.
While Kushi, banking on the magnetism that Vijay Deverakonda (coming off the disastrous Liger and in need of a hit) exudes and the chemistry that he shares with Samantha (out to live down Shaakuntalam), wants to tell its audience that love conquers all, it spends a large portion of its 165-minute runtime emphasising that those who do not agree with each other will always struggle to live under one roof.
If we take that supposition as a commentary on the fractious world that we live in today, is Kushi suggesting that acceptance, tolerance and respect for diversity aren't ideals worth fighting for? It is probably not doing that because it is after a feel-good film that ends on an all-is-well-with-the-world note.
It throws in a completely sorted but wholly unoriginal inter-faith couple, Zoya and Thomas (played by Rohini and Jayaram respectively), to drive home the obvious message that differences need not get in the way of the human quest for happiness. The superficiality of the ideas that it transmits prevents the film from being a serious, in-depth exploration of the war of ideologies in personal and familial spaces.
Kushi would have had many more pluses to its credit had it dared to break away with intent from its commitment to steering clear of the complexities of the human mind and heart. It barters away the potential for occasional pointed profundity and settles for an unchallenging and entertaining film.
The flip manner that Kushi consistently favours aids it to put together quite a few crowd-pleasing set-ups that alternate between the humorous and the emotionally engaging.
One of the strongest points of Kushi is, of course, the music composed by Hesham Abdul Wahab. Cinematographer Murali G. does a fabulous job of rustling up images that are easy on the eye. He uses the Kashmir passages to bring back memories of the luminous frames that Santosh Sivan conjured up in the 1990s for Roja and Dil Se.

For all the surface beauty that Kushi assembles on the screen in terms of the compositions (both visual and musical) and a lead pair endowed with oodles of charm, it always feels like a film that isn't going as far as it could have. It holds itself back quite palpably from being an all-out celebration of the tapestry of ideas that lend a society such as ours its dynamism, energy and variety.
There is no dearth of ideas in Kushi - in fact, there are too many of them for the good of the film- but it does not follow them to their logical end and lets the lure to boost the entertainment quotient dictate the eventual shape. It could have been a timely ode to love across differences. Instead, it is just another love story that banks on the lead actors, the music and the technical finesse for salvation.

‘Kushi’ Review: Vijay Deverakonda, Samantha’s middling rom-com is confusing
Director shiva nirvana’s ‘kushi’, starring vijay deverakonda and samantha, is a romantic comedy based on relationship woes. the film is confusing in its messaging, says our review..

- 'Kushi' released in theatres on September 1.
- Vijay Deverakonda and Samantha Ruth Prabhu play lead roles in the film.
- The film is directed by Shiva Nirvana.
Release Date: 1 Sep, 2023
Thousands of romantic comedies may come and go, but the audience will always have a soft corner for films of the same ilk. Vijay Deverakonda and Samantha tasted massive success in the past by attempting rom-coms. Now, the two stars are getting back to the familiar ground after big flops, respectively. Has ‘Kushi’ worked in their favour? Let’s find out!
Viplav (Vijay Deverakonda), who works in a government telephone exchange, is born to an atheist father, Lenin Sathya (Sachin Khedekar), and a theist mother (Saranya Ponvannan). Aradhya (Samantha Ruth Prabhu), works in the corporate sector and hails from an orthodox Brahmin family. It is love at first sight for Viplav when he bumps into Aradhya in Kashmir. He relentlessly pursues Aradhya, which is borderline stalking and harassment. But, let’s come to that later!
When Aradhya is convinced about him, he gets to know about her religion and her family’s preferences. Both parents do not agree on their wedding, which pushes them to get married and live separately. After several happy months, relationship woes plague their relationship. How their religious preferences affect their relationship and how they come out of it forms the story.
Director Shiva Nirvana has created a brand for himself by doing back-to-back romantic films. ‘Kushi’ is no different from his previous ventures. The film deals with a sensitive subject, i.e., religion. The film shows the troubles that crop up between newly-married couples who have different preferences. The concept of one sacrificing for the other and who has sacrificed the most creeps in. ‘Kushi’ shows how Viplav and Aradhya fall into the same trap.
The film is confusing in its messaging. In fact, it looks like Shiva Nirvana is confused about whether to show a progressive or regressive love story. In one scene, we hear Viplav calling himself a feminist, but he goes around relentlessly pursuing her without her consent. Similarly, Aradhya shows herself as a self-made woman but wants to wait for her guy to be her saviour.
On the contrary, ‘Kushi’ also has a solid message about people having different religious preferences yet co-existing in peace. There are some stretches in ‘Kushi’ that show some brilliance. It addresses how society puts pressure on newly-married couples to have a baby. Shiva Nirvana also does total justice to showing how couples, these days, take the easy way out when troubles come up. Vijay Deverakonda goes into ‘Geetha Govindam’ mode and perfectly portrays the boy-next-door role with ease. Samantha, too, aces this role with equal grace. But, it is Zoya and Thomas (Rohini and Jayaram), who play the roles of their neighbours that make this rom-com special. Zoya and Thomas’ love story had so much potential to be developed into a full-fledged story. But, they become pawns in Shiva Nirvana’s world. And, there's a call back to 'Arjun Reddy', which left everyone in splits.
That said, ‘Kushi’ barely scratches the surface and it’s the few stretches of brilliance that make this film a watchable affair. If ‘Kushi’ is breezy and feel-good, the main credit should go to Hesham Abdul Wahab’s soul-stirring music.
Director Murali G’s cinematography showed Kashmir and Hyderabad (Chennai in Tamil version) in full glory. The Tamil dubbing, however, watered down the film’s experience.

Kushi Movie Review: Shiva Nirvana's 'Kushi' is more about star power (Vijay Deverakonda, Samantha Ruth Prabhu) than convincing storytelling

Kushi Movie Cast & Crew
Vijay Deverakonda gets to turn on every bit of his star wattage in Shiva Nirvana's Kushi . I personally prefer to watch this actor express angst: few young performers are better at locating so precisely the scabs and scars and ripped-open wounds in one's soul. But here, he is in his Geetha Govindam mode. In that review, I wrote: "Vijay Deverakonda is canny enough to realise that the new-fangled films that got him noticed may be better cinema , but to become a huge box-office draw, you need to be a popcorn entertainer who's a bit of everything to everyone." You could say the same about Kushi . It is a safe movie. It is a family movie. It is a movie that makes a joke about Arjun Reddy and says: "This is not that movie. This is a safe movie. This is a family movie." And Vijay handles it all like a pro, like a supermodel who knows exactly where to look and how to turn for Murali G's camera to record him at his starriest.
His character is named Viplav. He works for a government company (BSNL) the way Shah Rukh Khan's character worked for AIR in Dil Se . When the first track from Hesham Abdul Wahab's lovely album ( 'Na Roja nuvve' ) , was released, many people noted that the lyrics were filled with the names of Mani Ratnam's movies. It was no accident. The main story of Kushi is about science vs. superstition, but a parallel narrative is about the many Mani Ratnam-esque storylines in here. Viplav falls for the burqa -clad Aaradhya (Samantha Ruth Prabhu), in Kashmir, and when they decide to get married, their families find there's too much incompatibility, too much friction. Aaradhya's father throws her out. Viplav/Aaradhya take up a place of their own, and negotiate married life with all its ups and downs with a guest appearance-making older couple (Rohini / Jayaram)...
This is an inelegant screenplay, which throws plot points at you instead of easing you into them. For instance, how do we know that Viplav's father (Sachin Khedekar) is a science-loving atheist? Because, in the very first scene , he's called to the podium on World Science Day and he rants against superstition. Now that that checkbox is cleared, how do we know that Aaradhya's father (Murali Sharma) is a scripture-quoting theist? Because in a train, in Kashmir , the man right behind Aaradhya plays… scripture being quoted by her father! If Viplav's devout mother (Saranya Ponvannan) is so afraid of incurring his father's wrath, then why would she conduct a ritual in the living room for all to see? When Viplav lands in Kashmir for his posting, he seems surprised to see an explosion – but afterwards, nothing occurs that marks this state as particularly troubled, nor is Viplav wary about moving around. So why have this scene suggesting a war-torn state? So on and so forth.
Kashmir is simply the place Viplav meets Aaradhya, whose reason for wearing that burqa may make some eyes roll. What Kushi needed to do in the first half is establish their romance firmly. But his is a case of love at first sight (which, again, might be a Mani Ratnam nod), and we waste a lot of time over a bizarrely over-the-top subplot about her missing brother. Neither Viplav nor Aaradhya behaves like a real person. They are exaggerated caricatures doing things we are meant to find "sweet" and "cute" and "romantic". I admit I giggled at the sight of Vennela Kishore taking a shit in the snow while listening to Lag jaa gale . And a joke involving apples is mildly amusing. But all this does nothing for the love story we are meant to be rooting for, and there is literally no basis for why Aaradhya should fall for Viplav.
But at the end of this tiresome "brother" subplot (it goes on and on in this 2:45-hour movie) Samantha sells her reason beautifully. Aaradhya believes in destiny and God, and she feels Viplav is the man for her. It can't be explained rationally, but Samantha is so good (and so old-world gorgeous) that she makes you feel what she is feeling. And the early parts of the second half are where you finally feel the chemistry between the two stars, the two actors. Over a song that breezes through a year of screen time, we see Viplav and Aaradhya do small things (instead of the big, exaggerated things earlier) that make them believable as a couple. Knowing his atheism, she hesitates to buy a small statue of Ganesha, but then, he surprises her with… a small statue of Ganesha. This bit in the song tells us everything about living with another person: that you can do your own thing, and yet respect your partner's beliefs.
Had this flavour continued, we might have had an excellent second half that touched on this core (and universal) concept of being true to yourself and yet… adjusting, compromising… to an extent that doesn't break that true self of yours. Instead, we get into exaggerations again to escalate the conflict between this couple. Out of nowhere, Viplav turns into this man who says things like "Women should be put in their place." And a scene at a fertility centre is treated as broad comedy, which destroys the emotion behind going to that fertility centre in the first place. I could overlook the two unnecessarily overblown action sequences: art and the box office need as much adjustment and compromise as a couple does. But what to do with a scene where Aaradhya's foreign client says he would have married her had she been single – just so that Viplav can overhear this and get more conflicted?
I liked the ending. I liked Viplav's small confrontation with his father. When the older man does something that goes against his beliefs, you realise the power of good melodrama. And when the science vs. superstition dilemma is resolved apparently by God or Nature (depending on which side of the divide you fall on), it's the perfect ending. Because not all debates have conclusive answers. This last stretch captures that balance that Alaipaayuthey did, between heightening something for cinematic effect and yet keeping things real. But it's when some things are done so well that the rest of it rankles. If all you want is pretty people in pretty surroundings and a pretty soundtrack, I suppose Kushi fits the bill. But I'd say the film is a missed opportunity. The sort of writing where Viplav wakes up and finds Aaradhya missing (and the resolution to this) – it's shock value for the sake of shock value. It tells us not to take this couple seriously. And when that doesn't happen, where's the movie?

Kushi Public Review: Vijay Devarakonda and Samantha starrer Kushi released today. The film was highly anticipated by the fans. Checkout this space for more interesting public review about the film Kushi:
Vijay Devarakonda Samantha Need A Hit
Vijay Devarakonda, who is determined to give a hit somehow, has come up with Kushi. Actress Samantha has acted opposite him in Kushi. Shiva Nirvana directed the film and Justin Prabhakaran composed the music for the film. The film is releasing in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Hindi languages. Murali Sharma, Sachin Kather, Saranya Ponvannan and Lakshmi have acted in the film.
Kushi getting positive response.. Wishing @TheDeverakonda & Entire #Kushi team for huge success ✨ #BlockBusterKushi pic.twitter.com/GkSUJSImDR — Kwood Gangster (@KWood_Gangster) September 1, 2023
Vijay Devarakonda met the press at Nakshatra Hotel in Coimbatore recently. He said "Kushi is being made as an entertaining film based on a love story. Everyone should go and watch it in theatres. There is no big difference as far as Tamil and Telugu films are concerned. Vijay starrer Kushi in Tamil and Pawan Kalyan starrer Kushi in Telugu became the biggest blockbusters. The film Khushi in which I acted is a film that can be watched with families. The people of Tamil Nadu will definitely enjoy the songs that will appear in Khushi. I'm ready to act with Samantha next time if there is a script.
Completed watching #Kushi premier show at london. One word: blockbuster Comeback😍 worth watching 🥹🥰 #Kushi #VijayDeverakonda #kushipremier #Samantha pic.twitter.com/vuGb1Mku6u — kumar (@kumarinuk) August 31, 2023
I have seen films like Nee Thaaney En Pon Vasantham and I am a fan of Samantha. Films like Baahubali, Pushpa, KGF are big films. I saw Maveeran movie yesterday and I loved the movie. Sivakarthikeyan has acted well. Lokesh Kanagaraj and Nelson are the best directors in Tamil. I like director Vetrimaaran very much and I like all his films. Murali, the cameraman of films like Kaala and Kabali, has joined us in this film as well.

Film Industry Travels Only Through Talent
Haven't seen Jailer movie yet. But the review of the film is good and I'm happy that the film has collected more. There are opportunities for all film-based workers in all language films. The music composer of Khushi is from Kerala and many artistes are from other states. Film industry travels only through talent, and I see the industry from that point of view."
Finally @Kushi not bad All good 👍 positive reviews 3/5 Comback done 💥🤙 Oopiri peelchukondi Hit zoner modhalaindhi ❤️🔥 #VijayDeverakonda #Kushi pic.twitter.com/GxFcAZDR9y — Vijay Sai Kushi on Sep 1st (@VijaySa45011843) August 31, 2023
Vijay Devarakonda also shared a tweet about Kushi yesterday, "Thoughts before Kushi release tomorrow! Cannot believe it is already here. It feels so sudden even though its been a year since you saw me on the big screen last. I believe you will all have a great fun time at the cinema. I cannot tell you how much i look forward to big smiles on all your faces. I love you all. Kushiiii is yours in a few hours. Enjoyyyyy! Your man, Vijay Deverakonda"

Kushi Movie Review: Unlikeable characters populate this ineffective romance
Rating: ( 2 / 5).
Writer-director Shiva Nirvana likes his Mani Ratnam films, it seems. Vijay Deverakonda, playing Viplav, talks more than once about Roja , while seeking a job transfer to Kashmir. As soon as he lands there, he says he has everything except Madhubala. You know in your bones that his quest shall be to fill up this romantic vacancy in his life—and as you can imagine, it doesn’t take him too long. While the film, in these portions, shows us terrorists and bomb blasts and gunfire, and there’s something about the India-Pakistan divide as well, Kushi is less about Roja than it is about another Mani Ratnam film, Sakhi (Alai Payuthey) . You see this in Viplav and Aradhya (Samantha) deciding to get married without the support of their families—particularly that scene of Viplav picking Aradhya up after she’s thrown out of her home, when she says—a la Shakti—that they will prove everyone wrong by living a happy life. You see Sakhi (or is it OK Bangaram (OK Kanmani) ?) in the elderly ‘model couple’ they interact with and learn from. You see it in the small arguments, once the ‘Kailove Chedugudu’ phase ends. But the big difference is that while Sakhi ensures that we invest early in the romance and care about the couple, this never quite seems to happen in this film
Director: Shiva Nirvana
Cast: Vijay Deverakonda, Samantha, Murali Sharma, Sachin Khedekar, Saranya, Lakshmi
And that’s because the whole Kashmir episode—that shows Viplav and Aradhya falling in love—comes through only as a strange tourism advertisement. The scenic rivers, the picturesque snow-laden mountains, the local life and all of those blasted apples… The film hopes that on some level, like Viplav, we will also be singing, ‘Paruvam vaanala…’ But places don’t make films; people do. And Viplav and Aradhya are not easy to feel for. Viplav decides, on first sight, that Aradhya is the one for him. This is, of course, cue for a song, with strands of… ‘Mangalyam Thanthunanena’. By this time, the girl is hardly interested. There’s something about an innocent lie gone wrong—which bizarrely results in Viplav abducting Kashmir children named Feroz. Meanwhile, the chase isn’t just restricted to Aradhya; there are actual bike-chases as well. And while Viplav has taken time off his government job to pursue such bizarre missions, Aradhya (Samantha, restricted to wide-eyed, innocent looks) won’t talk about her deception. In fact, she is largely restricted to being a mute spectator as her friend and Viplav take turns deciding outcomes for her. Just as I’d almost given up on this superficial romance between a desperate man and a deceiving girl, the film brought something interesting to the table: An ideological struggle between militant atheism and extreme theism.
Alas, what we end up getting though is more unlikeable people into this world. Viplav’s mother insults her foreign daughter-in-law for being unable to call her name right; Viplav’s father can’t care for too much beyond ideological wins; Aradhya’s father (Murali Sharma, who’s great as always) can’t care beyond the significance of rituals, not even when his daughter is in profound distress… I could go on and on. When a film takes on such a debate (theism vs atheism, science vs religion…), you know it usually settles for a gentle, middle ground—and that’s fine, but here, it does feel like the film is kinder towards the theists. Viplav’s mother (Saranya) is a shackled woman in a home full of anti-faith posters. Viplav’s wife, Aradhya, has made the sacrifice of abandoning her ritualistic ways but points this out every chance she gets and keeps insisting that a ritual be performed to remedy the ills befalling them. Poor Viplav meanwhile gets mocked for being unable to tie his dhoti right. Viplav’s dad gets a transformative moment, but it’s quite easily eclipsed by Aradhya’s dad, a theist. It seems that as a society, we are still rather frightened of any potential critique of religion. That’s perhaps why Aradhya’s dad never once gets questioned. For all the film’s posturing that rituals don’t really matter, it still feels like a misfortune in Aradhya’s life had something to do with jathakam . It still feels like something about everyone’s acceptance of a ritual, something about a union in a temple, resulted in a positive outcome for everyone.
Ideological issues aside, the film does get better as it goes, but that’s not to say it improves enough. The ‘fights’ between Aradhya and Viplav barely register. The escalation of their conflict feels forced. In between, you keep getting intrusive distractions—like a train fight with young cricketers who misbehave only so Vijay Deverakonda can protect his ‘pilla’. An Arjun Reddy reference makes for a good joke, and Vijay comments that “the market has branded him wrong” and that he is actually a “sthreepakshawadi”. And yet, Viplav talks about putting women in their place. Does he ever truly transform? Why does he go on to compare a wife with ‘dheyyam’? Why does the film make a joke out of a man undergoing a fertility test? If his proclamation of his identity at the end of the scene is progress, why then does he go on to declare his test results on stage as an affirmation of his masculinity?
It helps the film’s second half that Rohini and Jayaram show why they are such great actors by making the most of an underwritten angle. But largely, this film about an ideological clash offers little to reflect on—and this story about dreamy-love-leading-to- marital-distress creates little emotional resonance. The strongest I felt was deep anguish… when quality non-vegetarian food—beef biryani, fish curry…—kept getting discarded at different points in the film.

The Tamil movie “Kushi” is a romantic comedy film directed by Shiva Nirvana and produced by Naveen Yerneni and Y. Ravi Shankar under the banner of Mythri Movie Makers. The film stars Vijay Deverakonda and Samantha Ruth Prabhu in the lead roles.
“Kushi” is scheduled to be released in Tamil on September 1, 2023, along with dubbed versions in Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi.
“Kushi” 2023 Fails to Capture the Magic of the Original
The film’s story is about a young man named Kushi, a happy-go-lucky person. He falls in love with a girl named Vaishnavi, but the differences in their social status challenge their relationship.
The film is about a young couple, Kushi and Arjun, who fall in love and get married. However, their relationship is tested when Arjun is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Kushi must then find a way to cope with her husband’s illness and keep their love alive.
The film’s box office prediction is difficult to make at this stage, as it is a new film with no track record to go by. However, the film’s star cast and the director’s previous successes suggest that it has the potential to be a commercial success.
The Tamil movie “Kushi” in 2023 is a remake of the 2000 Telugu film of the same name and in Kannada as Eno Onthara.. It stars Vijay Deverakonda and Samantha Ruth Prabhu in the lead roles. The film is directed by Shiva Nirvana and produced by Mythri Movie Makers.
The Telugu version of “Kushi” was a commercial success, grossing over ₹100 crore at the box office. The film was praised for its performances, direction and music. It is expected that the Tamil version will also be a success.
Telugu and Tamil versions of “Kushi”:
The Tamil version has been made more family-friendly, with some of the adult humor from the Telugu version being toned down.
And also been given a more modern setting, with the characters using smartphones and other modern technology.
The Tamil version has a slightly different ending than the Telugu version.
Overall, the Tamil version of “Kushi” is a faithful remake of the Telugu original. It is a heartwarming story of love and loss that will touch audiences’ hearts.
