My Grandparents

I was lucky enough to grow up in my grandparent’s house. Our family lived with my grandparents since I was little. As my paternal grandfather passed away when I was very young, I only remember a few memories of him. One thing I surely remember is he used to brush his teeth twice daily without fail. I adopted this habit and ever since I have been doing the same.

How to navigate the joys and challenges of grandparenting, a new book celebrates being a grandparent and guides us through its complexities..

Recently, my adult children let me know that when they have children, they want me to be involved in their care. I was thrilled, but also humbled. Will I have the energy? How will I balance my work? And what if I make a misstep?

Many people my age delight in their newfound role with grandchildren. Yet I know others who founder at the edges of their children’s families, unable to find a comfortable way to engage. They want to be more involved, but their overtures are rejected or their relationship is unhappily limited.

In her new book, Unconditional Love: A Guide to Navigating the Joys and Challenges of Being a Grandparent Today , Jane Isay reminds us of the value of grandparents but also delineates the important rules of engagement—when to deepen the conversation, when to back off, and how to stay on your children’s and grandchildren’s teams. Books or articles on grandparenting are few, and they frequently paint simplified or idealized pictures of this set of complex relationships. Isay’s perspective is nuanced, practical, and hopeful, and is a wonderful resource for grandparents-to-be.

The gifts of grandparents

My own grandparents were safe harbors in my turbulent childhood. My mother’s mother, a prohibitionist and Sunday school teacher, was the person who was most interested in my thoughts—on any subject—which made me feel valued. My mother’s father, aloof and removed, found a way to reach out by making me rye bread, playing cribbage with me, and taking me on his long walks that followed frozen rivers through the woods. With both of these grandparents, I found a peace and acceptance that was absent in my immediate family.

In the best cases , grandparents’ unconditional love, slower pace, and careful attention nurture grandchildren’s “moral imagination”—the “ability to put themselves in the shoes of others, to understand their own feelings, and to respond to the world with kindness and acceptance.” Grandparents’ unconditional acceptance helps to grow children’s empathy; grandparents impart courage, as grandchildren witness living examples of lives filled with love, sacrifice, and struggle; and grandparents’ encouragement of children’s dreams builds confidence and personal agency. Grandparents are more likely to see grandchildren for who they really are, not who they wish them to be, writes Isay.

Grandparents also hold a unique position in the family system, Isay explains. They are the keepers of the stories that bridge multiple generations and that contribute to a child’s growing sense of autobiography —where they came from, who their ancestors are, and the qualities they’re connected to.

Isay offers tips on creating channels of connection and communication with grandchildren: how to enter a child’s world, how to stay in relationship as they grow, how to create the rituals that foster consistency and fun, and when to let go. It is not the material gifts or the forbidden indulgences that are memorable to grandchildren, she says, but the gifts of your perspective and access to your world—taking them birdwatching, watching your approach to panhandlers, validating their emerging truth (like their gender identity), and accepting a teenager’s growing—but temporary—sense of distance.

Isay’s numerous interviews with grandparents and grandchildren illustrate the creative ways that individual people navigate this special relationship. One grandfather paused his interview with Isay to greet his four-year-old grandson the way he always does—by hiding from the boy as he walked through the door and then jumping out to surprise him in a gleeful meeting ritual.

The grandparent-parent relationship

My favorite part of the book addresses something most grandparenting books overlook—the relationship between grandparents and their grown children (and children’s partners). Tending to these relationships, Isay reminds, is not only rewarding but important to stabilizing the fabric of love that supports a grandchild.

With your own adult children, Isay says, communication can be easy and effortless because of a long history together. Or, if there are unresolved conflicts from the past, it can be more difficult. Add to the mix that your children’s partners are challenged with figuring out where they belong in your extended family, and you have some potential stumbling blocks to harmony. Isay encourages an attitude of respect, communication, forgiveness, and self-restraint.

In particular, observe how your adult children want to parent, she advises. Support them by respecting their rules (about sugar, screen time, material possessions, and more). And if there’s trouble between your child and their co-parent, stay neutral, or get out of the house. Keep your criticisms, opinions, and revelations about how you did things to yourself. “Respect makes life easier and keeps the welcome mat out,” she says.

Yet Isay recognizes that grandparents have concerns and wants, too. She deftly and kindly advises on how to navigate your own needs with the new family. For example, your limits regarding how much time or money you can spend on your grandchildren may require intentional conversations to avoid misinterpretations—for example, that you don’t like them or that you have favorites.

The limits of Unconditional Love

Isay’s voice is one I pay attention to. She is a masterful editor who has brought numerous well-known psychology books to the public and has authored many of her own books , as well. (And while this may or may not reflect on her wisdom about childrearing, it feels worth noting that her son is the founder of the beautiful and humane audio project StoryCorps .) Her prose is gentle and light, and she shares her own feelings of joy, reward, humility, and hurt with a seasoned and mature candor.

Her book does falter in a few ways, though. Research shows that it’s the quality of the relationships within the family that matter most to children’s developmental outcomes. On that point, Isay seems to offer mixed messages: While she rightly advocates authentic and empathic relationship-tending, she every so often slips into the view that families are political entities to be managed—that adult children have the power to welcome or distance you, for example, and that every grandparent’s goal is “all about access to the baby.” While both may be true, the second conversation can undermine the goal of the first.

By framing a grandparent’s goal as “access,” Isay risks reinforcing the common lament of new parents—that grandparents become obsessed with their new grandbaby and in the process ignore the new parents at a time when they need extra understanding and care. In addition, what may feel to a grandparent like “limited access” can be a healthy and legitimate boundary drawn by a parent who has the right to do so, but Isay does not fully explore this perspective. Perhaps limited access could be positively reframed as a red flag for a relationship in need of attention.

Isay discusses diverse grandparenting scenarios, such as when distance makes cultivating a relationship challenging, when adult children need serious help, and when grandparents have to take over parenting responsibilities. But her general point of view seems to assume an intact family comprised of two heterosexual parents, when research shows that this is no longer the “traditional” American family. Fewer than half of American children grow up with two married, heterosexual parents who are in their first marriage. As a result of this disconnect, some potential readers may feel overlooked.

Although steeped in a well-digested knowledge of psychology, Unconditional Love is not a science-based book. Isay does not often support her claims, and her interviews are simply anecdotal and illustrative, which she acknowledges. The book also fails to address the situation where the grandparent may be harmful, unkind, absent, or narcissistic. Indeed, many grandparents need much more skill-building than a book like this offers. However, for the grandparent who is already self-aware and in need of just a little more insight, this is a wonderful orienting compass to a new phase of life.

Development is lifelong, and becoming a grandparent can foster growth in not only the grandparent but the entire family system. My own parents—who raised me in a conflicted and dysfunctional environment—became terrific grandparents to my daughters, offering loving arms, teaching skills like knitting and woodworking, and beaming with joy and pride in all their accomplishments. They are my children’s roots, their tribe, and their cheerleaders.

Grandparents are blessings in disguise that we have in our lives. Their presence in the home brings calmness and tranquility. Everything runs very smoothly and efficiently when we have our elders around to guide us. All this is because of their immense contribution to creating a stress-free environment and managing everything systematically. They maintain a sense of discipline in the family, and all the family members follow it consistently as they are the guardians. They know what is suitable for the family and what is not. Grandparents are the main reason behind keeping everything on track, maintaining peace in the house and productivity of the family members.

Indians are known for their rich culture and hospitality and many other things. All these were continued and passed on from one generation to another, maintaining the gravity of the values. In this, the role of Grandparents comes into the picture. They are the ones who forcefully make all the family members take charge and participate in the same. With the modernisation of society, Joint families are turning into Nuclear Families with the one-liner motto "We two, our two", excluding the Grandparents in the count of family members. It is a curse of society—doing this is inviting a significant loss in family life.

Grandparents take charge of significant responsibilities and have great decision-making power and management skills as they have gone through all the phases of life and know how to operate the same. Grandparents are the stepping stone of a family; without them, it seems empty and incomplete, and their existence completes the family. Grandparents have a significant role in our parent's upbringing, which indirectly contributed to our upbringing with all those good habits, etiquette and values. Role of Grandparent

My Grandparents

I grew up in a Joint family, and there were 15 members of the family. Being the elder grandson, I was very well-pampered by all the family members. I was given all kinds of facilities which I required. From the very start, since I was a child, I spent significant time with my grandparents. My grandparents used to tell me many moral stories, poems and sayings related to different scenarios, especially about society. I enjoyed them a lot. I used to wait for the same every day. It became part of the routine. My parents decided to shift me to boarding school when I passed the fifth grade.

It was the moment when I went away from the family, especially from my grandparents. I was broken. Somehow I managed myself. All those moral stories and proverbs got stored in my head permanently. It proved to be of great help to me in tackling many unforeseen situations like avoiding bad companions, destructive addictions and many more.

I still thank my grandparents for all these things; their blessings are taking me to new heights. So, respect your grandparents and treat them respectfully and listen to them.

We live in a society that values youth and warehouses its oldsters in “long-term care” facilities. Out of sight, out of mind. Grandparents, naturally, fall into this group. Consequently, there is little research being conducted on the significant role grandparents can play in the lives of their grandchildren.

Grandparents whose grandchildren live with them play an essential role as primary caregivers. That is pretty straightforward. But even grandparents whose grandchildren do not reside with them can relieve the mother by babysitting regularly.

They can also be a source of parenting tips for their sons or daughters who may struggle with caring for a newborn. By trial and error, grandparents have learned natural remedies for the common problems babies experience, such as diarrhea, constipation, colic, fussiness, and the like.

Not all mothers can always be with their newborn and young infant during the first two crucial years. Sometimes a mother or father must leave their child for lengthy periods of time. This can be devastating for an infant who feels abandoned no matter how often you try to explain that mommy will be back in a week.

Another way a baby may not receive full attention from his mother is if she suffers from post-partum depression or addictions.

Most regrettably, there are also women who, for many reasons, did not want to become pregnant and have a child. When the unwanted child is born, she might not be welcome. She is lucky to have her basic needs met but, otherwise, will likely receive little loving care from her mother. There will be a marked deficit in bonding and attachment with subsequent harmful consequences for the child’s physical and mental development.

These are just some life situations in which grandparents can be of invaluable help to their grandson or daughter.

A few years ago, I received the following letter:

My husband and I went to my grandmother's grave for the first time, for she died while we were in British Columbia some years ago. While we were looking for her grave, I heard in my mind a "lullaby"—I've heard bits of this song in my mind all my life, without ever knowing what it is—but it came on very strongly while I was searching for her grave.

When I found her grave, I didn't want my husband near—and I felt embarrassed for feeling that way about him being there, for he had helped me find her grave all that morning. But it felt like I wanted to be alone with her, to plug into that special feeling we had shared together once again.

I knew "she" wasn't in that grave at all—but I still felt these things towards her, and that song was so strong there in my mind. I don't know what that "lullaby" means. It is very gentle music, very light and beautiful, and it just filled that graveyard that day.

Until I met my husband, she was the only person I saw who loved me, from her eyes!

What a beautiful way to speak of bonding and attachment. Bonding is usually understood to refer to a mother’s, father’s, or any other person’s emotional relationship with their child, preferably from conception, but clearly, after birth.

Attachment is the same loving feeling by the child for her mother and others who have shown interest and kindness to the child. A caregiver who is reliably available and responsive to a baby's needs forms the basis for secure attachment, competence in exploring the environment , forming relationships, and developing self-esteem .

Attachment to a grandparent will gradually develop as a result of regularly being hugged, stroked, spoken to in soothing tones, listening to lullabies, and receiving love from the grandparent’s eyes.

Grandparents provide grandchildren a conduit to a family’s past, accomplishments, trials, and tribulations. It is important for children to know their roots and their cultural heritage. Parents are often too busy to talk about such things. Many times, they have forgotten such historical data or want to forget them because they are ashamed of them.

Scientific studies and anecdotal evidence show what most of us experienced but hardly ever put in words: that typically maternal grandparents are closer to grandchildren than paternal grandparents. Why should that be so? Several factors seem to be responsible.

For one, mothers are generally closer to their mothers than to their mothers-in-law. For that reason, they will often have their mothers present at the birth and to help with the baby once they are home. Thus, a preference has been established from the beginning, which endures.

Having your own daughter going through nine months of pregnancy and giving birth feels very different from having your son become a father, essentially getting a free ride.

Also, many psychologists have remarked on the observation that the relationship between a woman and her mother-in-law is complicated by the fact that many mothers do not approve of the woman their son has married for a variety of reasons such as race, religion, education , social class, age, etc. Mothers want the very best for their children, and the person they marry often does not meet the expectations of the future mother-in-law.

Whether a grandparent lives close by or a distance away will make a difference in how often they can visit and establish a meaningful relationship with their grandchild. Because of the mother’s closeness to her daughter, maternal grandparents tend to live nearer to her than paternal grandparents.

In one study of UK teenagers , the maternal grandmother was the most important family member besides their immediate family. The maternal grandfather was next.

Of course, the attitude of the grandparent will determine the quality of their relationship with their grandchild. Grandparents who want to be involved in the lives of their grandchildren and manage to be respectful of parental roles have the highest likelihood of success. And this is true for both branches of the nuclear family.

Also known as “kinship care,” a growing number of grandparents are now taking on the parenting role for their grandchildren, thus foregoing the traditional grandparent/grandchild relationship. This often means giving up your leisure time, the option of traveling, and many other aspects of your independence. Instead, you once again take on responsibility for the day-to-day maintenance of a home, schedules, meals, homework, and play dates. And if it was tragic circumstances that required you to step into the role of a parent, you’ll face many other stress factors, such as coping with your own and your grandchildren’s grief.

But raising your grandchildren, while challenging, can also be incredibly rewarding. Yes, you may have to deal with colicky babies or moody teenagers, but you’ll also experience a much greater connection to your grandchild’s world, including their school and leisure activities. You may also find yourself rolling back the years, rejuvenated by the constant companionship of much younger people. And you can derive immense satisfaction from providing your grandchildren with a safe, nurturing, and structured home environment in which to grow and feel loved.

Exploring your rights as a grandparent

Some circumstances make it necessary for grandparents to seek legal help. If there’s been a divorce, death of one parent, estrangement, or the suspicion that your grandchildren are undergoing neglect or abuse, you may need to consult a lawyer or advocacy group to clarify your legal rights and ensure access to your grandchildren.

The prospect of raising grandchildren is bound to trigger a range of emotions. Positive emotions, like the love you feel for your grandchildren, the joy in seeing them learn and grow, and relief at giving them a stable environment, are easy to acknowledge. Find someone you can talk to about what you’re going through. This will give you a chance to work through your feelings and reach an acceptance of the situation. If you deny or ignore these feelings, they will come out in other ways and may affect your relationship with your grandkids.

Look for support groups for grandparents raising grandchildren. Support groups or even phone support can be very helpful in this journey, and it’s a good start for making friends in similar situations. Hearing from people who have been there can help both uplift your spirits and give you concrete suggestions for your situation.

Reach out in your community for childcare help. If you are a member of a church, synagogue or other religious organization, you may be able to ask around for available babysitters. Your grandkids may resent being separated from their parent and wish to return, even if their home situation was dangerous or abusive. Don’t take this personally. The parent-child bond is powerful. Even if the children are old enough to understand that they’re better off with you, they will still miss their parent and struggle with feelings of abandonment.

Your grandkids’ feelings may come out in many ways, including behavior. They may lash out with aggressive or inappropriate behavior , or they may withdraw and push you away.

No matter their behavior, your grandkids need your comfort and support. If you start to get angry or upset, put yourself in their head. Picture what they’ve been through, and the confusion, mistrust, and fear they’re probably feeling.

Encourage their input in their new home. Let your grandkids help pack and move in their belongings to the extent that they’re able for their age. Encourage them to decorate their new room and arrange it as they’d like. Having some control will make the adjustment easier.

Set clear, age-appropriate house rules and enforce them consistently. Children feel more secure when they know what to expect. Loving boundaries tell the child that he or she is safe and protected.

Make sure that each grandchild has a private space. If grandchildren are sharing a bedroom, get creative: use a divider to partition off a private area in a bigger room, erect a playhouse in the backyard, or set up a tent in the family room.

Offer your time and attention. You can be a consistent, reassuring presence for your grandkids. Try to make time to interact with them at the beginning of the day, when they come home from school, and before bed.

Encourage your grandchildren to talk about their feelings, both good and bad. Try to listen without judging or dismissing their feelings.

Help your grandkids learn to identify their emotions. For example, if your grandchild seems upset, you might say, “You look sad. Is something bothering you?”

Young children communicate through play. Young children may not be able to verbalize how they feel, but will express themselves through their play.

• Avoid telling the child too much. Many children are simply too young to understand the whole story. When grandparents tell a young child all of the details of the situation, they may create more harm than good. Too much information can be confusing, scary, and overwhelming for the child.
• Avoid telling the child too little or nothing at all. Kids are smart. They will pick up tidbits about their situation, even if the details are not discussed directly. If children learn about what’s going on from someone else, they could feel hurt, deceived, and confused. They may avoid asking you questions or talking to you about other important concerns because they think certain topics are “off limits.”
• Never twist the facts or lie to the child. Even very young children know the difference between the truth and a lie. They often piece together information, but then are afraid to talk about the truth. Some people may twist the facts in an effort to protect the child. But that approach often backfires. When children are told untruths about a situation, they may become very confused, angry, and hurt. The best strategy is to be honest with your grandchildren, at their level of understanding. Scientists Say "Grandma Brain" Isn't Just in Your Head

MRIs reveal that grandmothers may feel more emotional empathy toward their grandkids than they did with their own kids.

My son-in-law recently introduced me to his friend the following way: “This is Kate. She’s an interesting person and a good conversationalist … unless Anne is in the room. In that case, don’t even try.”

Anne is my toddler-aged granddaughter, and I am guilty as charged. Something happens to me when I’m with her. I’m enchanted. Bewitched. Besotted.

It turns out that this isn’t just love, though there’s plenty of that. I’m experiencing “Grandma Brain.” That’s not a technical term, but there is a scientific explanation for what’s going on. Neurological research has shown that something unique happens to our brains when we see our grandchildren — and it may explain our intense devotion and delight.

“What really jumps out in the data is the activation in areas of the brain associated with emotional empathy,” Rilling says. “That suggests that grandmothers are geared towards feeling what their grandchildren are feeling when they interact with them. If their grandchild is smiling, they’re feeling the child’s joy. And if their grandchild is crying, they’re feeling the child’s pain and distress.”

Retired teacher Janet Meisel, who has three grandsons, wrote an essay on Medium with a title that’s a near-perfect illustration of the heightened emotional empathy that Rilling’s study revealed. Titled “Are Grandparents Supposed To Feel This Much Love?” her subtitle reads, “Sometimes it feels like my heart will burst with joy and sometimes with pain.”

Reflecting on the difference between being a mom and a grandma, Meisel writes, “I had given my children so much of myself, but this feeling was different. It was love on steroids.”

What makes the new research particularly interesting is that the grandmothers’ brains did not light up in the same areas when women looked at pictures of their own children. When photos of their offspring were shown to the same women, a different area was activated, one associated with cognitive empathy. With cognitive empathy, a person can understand what another is feeling and why. But with emotional empathy, a person experiences what someone else is feeling.

That’s no surprise to Nancy Claus, a Connecticut grandmother of two. “It’s like a melting,” she says, sighing. “Isabella’s just at this magical stage where you hold her, she looks into your eyes, locks on you, and just bursts into this smile. She’s just wiggling with happiness all over and then I feel so happy, just flooded with this warm, delightful feeling.”

Grandparents tend to joke, “If I’d known how great it would be to be a grandparent, I’d have done it before I had kids.” This sentiment has less to do with brain activity than it does with the relationship. (“I can enjoy the kid and then hand them back.”) Grandparents, of course, have less responsibility than parents. Combine that with heightened emotional empathy swirling around in their brains and a “don’t sweat the small stuff” sensibility of many older folks, and it makes for a joyful ride.

“I could have a terrible day or a wonderful day, but as soon as I walk into the room with my grandson or my granddaughter, anything that happened before just dissipates,” says Melanie Schaffran, a New York grandmother. “I’m in complete rapture. Not to say I’m not aware of the mess being created, but it doesn’t matter.”

For mothers and fathers, mess does matter. Parents are often up to their ears in work stress, financial stress, kid stress, eldercare stress and everything else pulling on them at the stage of life when kids are young.

“I don’t even remember that life,” says Marti Gallardo, a Texas grandmother of three, with two more on the way. “We were just so busy.” Gallardo, now retired from her career in advertising sales, chatted while covered in “green apple peel spit.” She was watching her 14-month-old granddaughter, Clare, who only likes the inside of apples. As a grandma — and a woman who was no longer has to rush to work looking professional nor worry about if the baby is eating the right foods — Gallardo was relaxed.

Rilling’s original research was conducted in 2021. His study included placing 50 grandmothers in MRI machines and observing their reactions to photos of grandchildren who ranged from ages three to 12. The women were also shown photos of their own biological children as adults, as well as pictures of unknown people of all ages.

The data is still being analyzed. Currently, Rilling is studying saliva samples to see whether grandmothers have more oxytocin — nicknamed “the love hormone” for the good feeling it produces — compared to women of the same age who are not grandmothers. His team is also exploring if being a grandmother affects the rate at which the brain ages, with the hypothesis that it slows the process. He also hopes to conduct longitudinal studies by taking brain images and studying hormones before and after women become grandmothers. Rilling also plans to study the brains of grandfathers.

The biology of grandparents is “unexplored territory,” Rilling says. “A lot of research on older people’s brains is in the context of pathology and degeneration. Here we’re looking at healthy older brains and what they may have been designed for.” He believes his is the first study to examine grandmothers’ brain activity.

That said, other non-neurological studies have made the connection between being an active grandparent and better health. AARP conducted a comprehensive survey of grandparents and in its summary refers to grandkids as “the elixir of life.” Benefits include a more physically active lifestyle, more sociability and improved mental well-being.

The Berlin Aging Study , which tracked health outcomes of more than 500 people ages 70 and older, found that grandparents who helped care for their grandchildren had lower mortality rates over a 20-year period than those who did not. Plenty of research has also documented the benefits to grandchildren of having grandparents in their lives.

Why have grandmother’s brains evolved as they have? As an anthropologist as well as a psychologist, Rilling speculates that close grandmaternal bonds make it easier for parents to reproduce and continue the species. Or to put it in everyday terms, if parents have some help with the first baby , they’re more likely to go for number two. Or three.

That may explain another facet of intense grandmother love. The recognition of past, present and future in a grandchild’s face. “I see little bits of my mother in Olivia already,” Claus says of her 2-year-old granddaughter. “I don’t want to burst into singing ‘Circle of Life’ here, but it’s seeing your genes passing on and moving to the future. Seeing the next generation, the continuity, just brings a contentment.”

What Have You Learned From a Grandparent or Elder?

Do you wish you had closer relationships with the older people in your life?

Have you had close relationships with grandparents or other elders? What memories come to mind when you think of them? What life lessons have you gained from your time together?

Do you ever wish you could be closer to the older people in your life?

In a Modern Love essay, “ At 93, Teaching Me About Possibility ,” Richard Morgan writes about what happened when he abandoned “grayspeak” — talking to elders as if they are toddlers — and embraced real conversations with his grandmother:

Awake from a nap in her favorite chair, my grandmother ran her fingers through her wavy white hair, looked out her window at the English Channel, and asked me what I would wish for if I had just one wish. She often asks this, and I always answer the same way because it will make her happy — “To have Granddad back” — which usually gets her reminiscing about him. But on that day a few months ago, she shook her head, then said with a sigh: “Richard, we had our innings. Good innings. Make a wish for yourself, dear.” I wish I knew we could have been like this sooner. For decades I had the same kind of grandmother many people have: a money-filled birthday card in the mail; a phone call on Christmas; a pleasant little song and dance so polite and practiced that it became like the way people say “Bless you” after sneezes. Then, about a decade ago, she began to lose her hearing precipitously. The phone calls got harder. And I noticed that if I asked what she had for lunch, she might say, “Oh, the weather has been lovely today.” So accustomed to the family’s same few questions, she seemed to recycle the same handful of answers. Our time together was diminished. She was diminished. This is called “grayspeak” or “elderspeak,” a shift in the way we address elders that treats them less like sages and more like toddlers or pets. We say things like, “Today was rainy. Did you see the rain?” and “Was your dinner yummy?” It’s a bogus, tedious and stupid way to interact, so I fought it. I started to show up for her more, in person, despite her living in Dover, England, and me in New York City. During my visits, I started throwing her curveballs: What did you do with your first-ever paycheck? What did you think about when you were hiding in caves during the war? What was the best invention of your lifetime? Her answers: Buying electricity for her parents’ house so she wouldn’t have to scrape candle wax off the stairs. Eating oranges. Running water (with microwaves a close second). More than answers, they were springboards into unexpected conversations.

"This Advice Applies To Everything": 20 Pieces Of Reaaaally Good Advice That Older Adults Passed Down Through Generations

When I was younger, my great-grandma told me always to keep Ziplocs in my bag in case I came across some food I needed to pack up and take with me. I don't do that (mainly because I forget), but I'll always keep that advice in my head. Recently, I asked members of the BuzzFeed Community to share the pieces of advice from their parents or grandparents that have stuck with them to this day, and I'm taking notes. Here are some of the best life lessons I read:

1. "I was told to 'pick and choose your battles.' I don't have to get upset or offended or say something just because I disagree. I've learned just to smile and nod and go about my day."

20. Last but not least: "My sophomore year in college, I had a friend who became suicidal, and I spent the majority of the fall semester doing everything to help: taking them to counseling appointments, staying over with them most nights, rushing over to them when they called me after they self-harmed, and anything else. It got bad. Like, the counselor had to call their parents. They ended up leaving campus mid-semester to go home, and by that point, I was emotionally and mentally destroyed. I was experiencing my first depressive episode myself after probably eight weeks of helping keep my friend alive while also doing 18 credit hours. I went home for the holiday, and my mom told me, 'Everything happens for a reason; God has a plan.' That's all well and good, but I'm not religious, and it gave me no comfort to hear that there was a 'reason' for all that despair."

"That my friend, and maybe me and everyone else involved, had done something to deserve punishment — or that this was all wrapped up into a fun little 'life lesson' for us all — was outrageous to me. My dad gave the opposite advice, saying, 'Sometimes things just happen. There's no reason, they just happen.' And that gave me comfort. I don't need to hear that something in the universe specifically targets people to have a 'bad time' for some vague reason that we'll never find out. Random life events are not punishments or rewards. Sometimes things just happen."

Dear Annie: When should I stop giving birthday presents to the grandkids?

Dear Annie: I am very confused. I have a friend who is 70 and is in the hospital. She has put a mutual friend, “Dorothy,” down as her daughter. She has a son, but he is a man-child.

Our friend Dorothy has so many obligations as it is. Dorothy and I are close, and we are similar ages. I do not have siblings, since my brother passed away at a young age. I have an 85-year-old father who has been both mother and father to me.

I have had “Fred” as my life partner for nine years already!

You see, after my father passes, I will have Fred to lean on. But when Fred passes, I will not have anyone. Dorothy says that she will always be there for me. I don’t want to burden anyone. I have finances of my own. I won’t need monetary things. I do not have anyone to leave my things to. I hate to think of myself alone with things I have bought. Those things will not comfort me in my lonely life.

I have been blessed with several grandchildren and was wondering if I could get some ideas on when to stop with birthday gifts. I am thinking that after their 18th birthday, I will just go with Christmas gifts.

I have heard stories where grandparents end up buying gifts for the spouses of their grandchildren and then the great-grandchildren.

I have been blessed with several grandchildren and was wondering if I could get some ideas on when to stop with birthday gifts. I am thinking that after their 18th birthday, I will just go with Christmas gifts.
