NPR in Turmoil After It Is Accused of Liberal Bias

An essay from an editor at the broadcaster has generated a firestorm of criticism about the network on social media, especially among conservatives.

NPR is facing both internal tumult and a fusillade of attacks by prominent conservatives this week after a senior editor publicly claimed the broadcaster had allowed liberal bias to affect its coverage, risking its trust with audiences.

Uri Berliner, a senior business editor who has worked at NPR for 25 years, wrote in an essay published Tuesday by The Free Press, a popular Substack publication, that “people at every level of NPR have comfortably coalesced around the progressive worldview.”

Mr. Berliner, a Peabody Award-winning journalist, castigated NPR for what he said was a litany of journalistic missteps around coverage of several major news events, including the origins of Covid-19 and the war in Gaza. He also said the internal culture at NPR had placed race and identity as “paramount in nearly every aspect of the workplace.”

Mr. Berliner’s essay has ignited a firestorm of criticism of NPR on social media, especially among conservatives who have long accused the network of political bias in its reporting. Former President Donald J. Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to argue that NPR’s government funding should be rescinded, an argument he has made in the past.

NPR has forcefully pushed back on Mr. Berliner’s accusations and the criticism.

“We’re proud to stand behind the exceptional work that our desks and shows do to cover a wide range of challenging stories,” Edith Chapin, the organization’s editor in chief, said in an email to staff on Tuesday. “We believe that inclusion — among our staff, with our sourcing, and in our overall coverage — is critical to telling the nuanced stories of this country and our world.” Some other NPR journalists also criticized the essay publicly, including Eric Deggans, its TV critic, who faulted Mr. Berliner for not giving NPR an opportunity to comment on the piece.

In an interview on Thursday, Mr. Berliner expressed no regrets about publishing the essay, saying he loved NPR and hoped to make it better by airing criticisms that have gone unheeded by leaders for years. He called NPR a “national trust” that people rely on for fair reporting and superb storytelling.

“I decided to go out and publish it in hopes that something would change, and that we get a broader conversation going about how the news is covered,” Mr. Berliner said.

He said he had not been disciplined by managers, though he said he had received a note from his supervisor reminding him that NPR requires employees to clear speaking appearances and media requests with standards and media relations. He said he didn’t run his remarks to The New York Times by network spokespeople.

When the hosts of NPR’s biggest shows, including “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered,” convened on Wednesday afternoon for a long-scheduled meet-and-greet with the network’s new chief executive, Katherine Maher , conversation soon turned to Mr. Berliner’s essay, according to two people with knowledge of the meeting. During the lunch, Ms. Chapin told the hosts that she didn’t want Mr. Berliner to become a “martyr,” the people said.

Mr. Berliner’s essay also sent critical Slack messages whizzing through some of the same employee affinity groups focused on racial and sexual identity that he cited in his essay. In one group, several staff members disputed Mr. Berliner’s points about a lack of ideological diversity and said efforts to recruit more people of color would make NPR’s journalism better.

On Wednesday, staff members from “Morning Edition” convened to discuss the fallout from Mr. Berliner’s essay. During the meeting, an NPR producer took issue with Mr. Berliner’s argument for why NPR’s listenership has fallen off, describing a variety of factors that have contributed to the change.

Mr. Berliner’s remarks prompted vehement pushback from several news executives. Tony Cavin, NPR’s managing editor of standards and practices, said in an interview that he rejected all of Mr. Berliner’s claims of unfairness, adding that his remarks would probably make it harder for NPR journalists to do their jobs.

“The next time one of our people calls up a Republican congressman or something and tries to get an answer from them, they may well say, ‘Oh, I read these stories, you guys aren’t fair, so I’m not going to talk to you,’” Mr. Cavin said.

Some journalists have defended Mr. Berliner’s essay. Jeffrey A. Dvorkin, NPR’s former ombudsman, said Mr. Berliner was “not wrong” on social media. Chuck Holmes, a former managing editor at NPR, called Mr. Berliner’s essay “brave” on Facebook.

Mr. Berliner’s criticism was the latest salvo within NPR, which is no stranger to internal division. In October, Mr. Berliner took part in a lengthy debate over whether NPR should defer to language proposed by the Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association while covering the conflict in Gaza.

“We don’t need to rely on an advocacy group’s guidance,” Mr. Berliner wrote, according to a copy of the email exchange viewed by The Times. “Our job is to seek out the facts and report them.” The debate didn’t change NPR’s language guidance, which is made by editors who weren’t part of the discussion. And in a statement on Thursday, the Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association said it is a professional association for journalists, not a political advocacy group.

Mr. Berliner’s public criticism has highlighted broader concerns within NPR about the public broadcaster’s mission amid continued financial struggles. Last year, NPR cut 10 percent of its staff and canceled four podcasts, including the popular “Invisibilia,” as it tried to make up for a $30 million budget shortfall. Listeners have drifted away from traditional radio to podcasts, and the advertising market has been unsteady.

In his essay, Mr. Berliner laid some of the blame at the feet of NPR’s former chief executive, John Lansing, who said he was retiring at the end of last year after four years in the role. He was replaced by Ms. Maher, who started on March 25.

During a meeting with employees in her first week, Ms. Maher was asked what she thought about decisions to give a platform to political figures like Ronna McDaniel, the former Republican Party chair whose position as a political analyst at NBC News became untenable after an on-air revolt from hosts who criticized her efforts to undermine the 2020 election.

“I think that this conversation has been one that does not have an easy answer,” Ms. Maher responded.

Some Arizona high school football teams are beginning spring football workouts this week, while many more start next week. Schools are maneuvering ways to get their players together without interrupting spring sports teams and finals.

Here are The Arizona Republic 's top 10 storylines to follow during spring workouts, which bring college football coaches from all over the country to get a glimpse of next season's top high school players.

1. Who's QB1?

Who's next at Peoria Liberty and Chandler Basha to lead the offense? Liberty loses two-time Gatorade Arizona high school football Player of the Year Navi Bruzon, who is a walk-on quarterback for Arizona State. Basha loses four-year starting quarterback Demond Williams Jr., who could be Washington's QB1. Those two both won an Open state championship in their career and combined to win 44 games over the past two seasons.

So, who does Liberty coach Colin Thomas and Basha coach Chris McDonald turn to this spring? It could be a competition that runs through not only three weeks of spring ball, but through June 7-on-7s, and into August. But there is no doubt these programs won't be hurting at the position.

2. Changing of the guard

Can Scottsdale Saguaro still compete for a championship? Do the Sabercats have what it takes to get back into the Open? Darius Kelly will find out soon enough as he steps into the head coaching role, the third head coach in three years for a program that is used to winning championships. About 10 players have transferred out since the end of last season. But a few elite players have transferred in.

3. Hanging on

Where does Goodyear Desert Edge go from here, after co-head coaches Marcus and Mark Carter stepped down last week after the AIA placed the program on probation for the school's self-reported recruiting violation? On Tuesday, the AIA will hear Desert Edge's appeal to try to get the probation, which imposes a post-season ban for the 2024 season, rescinded. This is a program that could challenge for a state title. How will the players respond?

4. Westside takeover

Peoria schools Liberty and Centennial meeting in the Open final last season might be put on repeat, after both schools received several marquee transfers since winter. How Centennial coach Richard Taylor and Liberty coach Colin Thomas can put them in the right places and keep team chemistry strong will determine whether they meet again for the Open state title.

5. Coaching dominoes

There have been more than 50 coaching changes in the offseason, slightly more than the annual average in Arizona. Will Andy Litten turn Mesa Mountain View into a title contender after leaving Scottsdale Horizon? Can Jeremy Hathcock tap into the gold mine at Buckeye Verrado after leaving his alma mater Lakeside Blue Ridge? Will Mike Zdebski turn it around at Surprise Shadow Ridge after leading Chandler Hamilton to the Open every year? Can former Hamilton quarterback Travis Dixon lead the Huskies to the Open title in his first year?

6. Brophy's NFL pipeline

The Broncos might have the best offensive line in the state, with top 2025 recruit Logan Powell ready for a full season and the tremendous growth of Jorden Cunningham and Anderson Kopp ready for a monster season. But Brophy might be on the verge of Open greatness with the son of former NFL players in a tremendous 2026 class: wide receivers Daylen Sharper and Devin Fitzgerald, quarterback Case Vanden Bosch and outside linebacker Bastian Vanden Bosch.

7. Switching ALA schools

American Leadership Academy schools keep popping up all over the Valley. Joe Germaine, former coach at Mountain View, is now leading the new one in Mesa. But a lot of the focus will be on ALA Gilbert North, where Ty Detmer replaces fired coach and athletic director Randy Ricedorff , who was let go over his decisions related to junior running back Talan Renner after Preston Lord's death. Renner played two more games after Lord was brutally beaten to death, which led to the arrest and first-degree murder charges of seven individuals, including Renner.

Detmer was moved from ALA Queen Creek, where he led that program to three straight Open appearances. Detmer seems like the perfect guy to try to clean up at ALA Gilbert North.

8. Hidden talents

Every once in a while, college coaches find hidden talents during their trips to high school spring football practices. Tempe quarterback Saul Mendez and Tempe McClintock quarterback Jaxon Knutson are two of them. They both have big-play receivers in Tempe's Sa'Veon McCrimmon and McClintock's Khalil Bender, who will soon enough get discovered. And look at Glendale Independence linebacker Michael Palmer, 6-1, 190, who has had 38 tackles for losses the last two seasons.

9. Chandler's O-line experience

It always takes talent and depth in the offensive line for teams to win state championships. And Chandler might be back to getting to the Open final with four returning starters back on the offensive line. Coach Rick Garretson also has one of the top linebackers in Aiden Browder, and it could be a three-man race for QB1 among Dominic Carmigiano (2026), Will Mencl (2027) and Jay Arnold (2027).

10. Trey Knox's rapid recovery

Percy "Trey" Knox III suffered a broken ankle playing in a 7-on-7 tournament in February. Last week, he ran his first track meet since then, blazing to a personal-record 11.23 seconds in the 100 meters to place second at the Chandler City Meet. Now, the 2026 Basha cornerback is set for his first spring football practice.

“That wouldn’t be a problem for an openly polemical news outlet serving a niche audience. But for NPR, which purports to consider all things, it’s devastating both for its journalism and its business model,” Berliner wrote. He also wrote that “race and identity became paramount in nearly every aspect of the workplace,” while claiming that the network lacked viewpoint diversity.

His essay set off a firestorm on the right, with Trump blasting the network and Fox News devoting extensive coverage to the criticism, along with calls for ending government funding for NPR.

In his essay, Berliner wrote that “defunding isn’t the answer,” but that its journalism needed to change from within. The network’s funding has been a target of conservatives numerous times in the past, but lawmakers ultimately have supported public radio.

Berliner shared his suspension notice with Folkenflik, who wrote that it was for failure to seek approval for outside work, as well as for releasing proprietary information about audience demographics.

Katherine Maher, who recently became CEO of the network, published a note to staff last week that appeared to take issue with Berliner’s essay, writing that there was “a criticism of our people on the basis of who we are.”

“Asking a question about whether we’re living up to our mission should always be fair game: after all, journalism is nothing if not hard questions,” Maher wrote. “Questioning whether our people are serving our mission with integrity, based on little more than the recognition of their identity, is profoundly disrespectful, hurtful, and demeaning.”

Maher herself has become a target on the right, with some figures citing her past social media posts, including one from 2020 that referred to Trump as a “deranged racist sociopath.” At the time, she was CEO of the Wikimedia Foundation. In a statement to The New York Times , Maher said that “in America everyone is entitled to free speech as a private citizen.” “What matters is NPR’s work and my commitment as its C.E.O.: public service, editorial independence and the mission to serve all of the American public,” she said.

An NPR spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment. The network told The Times that Maher is not involved in editorial decisions.

Some of Berliner’s colleagues have been vocal in their own criticism of his essay. Eric Deggans, the network’s TV critic and media analyst, wrote that Berliner “set up staffers of color as scapegoats.” He also noted that Berliner “didn’t seek comment from NPR before publishing. Didn’t mention many things which could detract from his conclusions.”

NASHVILLE — What if the Tennessee Titans don't select Notre Dame left tackle Joe Alt with the No. 7 overall pick Thursday night in the NFL Draft? What if general manager Ran Carthon and first-year coach Brian Callahan prefer a wide receiver? Or a trade down in the first round to acquire more assets for their rebuilding project?

What if the Los Angeles Chargers or New York Giants, both desperate for a pass blocker, beat the Titans to Alt, the consensus best offensive lineman in the draft?

2024 NFL Draft week is here. According to NFL Mock Draft Database, 58.4 percent of drafts have the Titans taking Alt. Which makes a lot of sense. One of the worst offensive lines in football last year needs a building block to join all-rookie guard Peter Skoronski and free-agent center Lloyd Cushenberry.

However, the draft is unpredictable and the Titans aren't the only team with holes to fill.

Barring trades, the predicted first three picks are quarterbacks Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Drake Maye, then the top three wide receivers Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers, and Rome Odunze, leaving Alt to the Titans. And wouldn't that be logical? Then again ...

Could the Titans take Brock Bowers, who set Southeastern Conference records for tight ends for most receptions (175), receiving yards (2,538), and receiving touchdowns (26) while winning two national titles for the University of Georgia? Bowers is also the first two-time winner of the John Mackey award that goes to the nation's best tight end.

Let's say the Giants or Chargers take Alt. That would likely leave Odunze or Nabers to join DeAndre Hopkins and Calvin Ridley in Tennessee's wide receivers room. As Callahan said in an interview with 102.5 The Game: "I tend to lean to the guys that can score touchdowns."

ESPN analyst Matt Miller named LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers as a possibility if Alt is taken earlier.

"I think the only scenario that, as a Titans fan you have to worry about is if the L.A. Chargers just stick at 5 and say: 'We're going to build through the trenches, and we'll take Joe Alt,'" Miller said Friday during a conference call. "Rashawn Slater is about to hit a contract year, so they could certainly be drafting ahead for the future. If you're a Titans fan, you think about, 'How could your board get wiped out?' That is certainly one way, if the Chargers stay at five and take Alt."

"The other scenario, if that happens, you're probably hoping Malik Nabers from LSU is there," Miller said. "They've added Calvin Ridley, so the wide receiver room is looking a lot better than it did just a year ago. I think, and we even heard Brian Callahan talk about this, you still are lacking that slot production. Looking at the Cincinnati offense, where he came from, it was known for three-wide. That third receiver has not really emerged yet for the Titans.

"So I think if Joe Alt is gone, and I'm sure you'd love to have a left tackle there, but if there is not a trade-back scenario there that you like, then I think you maybe stay and take Malik Nabers and then you look at the tackle group later in the draft to try and fill out that need."

In 2023, Nabers was Pro Football Focus' top-ranked college receiver. He was a consensus All-American and became LSU's career leader for catches and receiving yards — ahead of NFL stars Justin Jefferson and Ja'Marr Chase.

Odunze helped lead the Washington Huskies to the college football championship game. PFF ranks him as the No. 8 prospect for all positions.

One of the strengths of the draft is at offensive tackle. The Titans could decide to gain some draft capital by trading down. Teams such as the Minnesota Vikings, picking at No. 11, are expected to move up to get Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

If the Titans were to trade down, another six tackles are projected as first-round material — such as Penn State's Olu Fashanu, a consensus first-team All-American last season and the Big Ten offensive lineman of the year. According to PFF, he allowed zero sacks and only 10 pressures on 382 passing snaps last season.

Or if the Titans opted for a receiver later in the first round, they could look at Texas wide receiver Adonai Mitchell or LSU wideout Brian Thomas.
