  • ઇસરોએ ચંદ્રયાન-૩ના નીચે મુજબ ઉદ્દેશ્યો નિર્ધારિત કર્યા છે:ચંદ્રતલ પર સુરક્ષિત અને હળવું ઉતરાણ પ્રદર્શિત કરવું.
  • રોવરના ચંદ્રમા પર ભ્રમણનુ પ્રદર્શન કરવું અને
  • યથાસ્થિતિ વૈજ્ઞાનિક પ્રયોગો કરવા.

અવકાશયાન

1. પરિભ્રમણીક એકમ:  propulsion module.

2. ઉતરાણ એકમ (Lander): 

ઉતરાણ એકમ ચંદ્રમા પર હળવા ઉતરાણ માટે જવાબદાર છે. આ પણ એક પેટી આકારની સંરચના છે. તેને ચાર પાયા તેમજ પ્રત્યેકની બળ ક્ષમતા ૮૦૦ ન્યૂટન ધરાવતા ચાર ગોદક (thrusters) છે. ગોદક ધક્કો મારે છે, એટલે કે જરુર મુજબ ગોદો મારવાનું કામ કરે છે. ઉતરાણ એકમ તેની સાથે રોવરને તથા અન્ય વૈજ્ઞાનિક ઉપકરણો લઈ જશે જે સ્થળ પર ઘણા વિશ્લેષણ કરશે.

ઉતરાણ એકમ (Lander):

ચંદ્રયાન-૩ના ઉતરાણ એકમને ચાર એન્જિન છે. ચંદ્રયાન-૨માં પ્રત્યેક ૮૦૦ ન્યૂટન એકમ બળવાળ પાંચ એન્જિન હતાં, તેના બદલે ચંદ્રયાન-૩ના વિક્રમ ખૂબ ઝડપથી બળ અને દિશામાં ફેરફાર કરી શકે તેવાં સ્લ્યુ દરવાળાં ચાર એન્જિન છે. ચંદ્રયાન-૨ની નિષ્ફળતામાં મુખ્ય ફાળો તેના વલણમાં વધારાનો હતો. ચંદ્રયાન-૩માં કેન્દ્રસ્થ એન્જિનને દૂર કરવાથી આ વલણ ઘટા જશે. આમ, ઉતરાણ વખતે ચોતરફની ગોદક્ષમતા સંપુર્ણ રીતે અંકુશમાં હશે. વળી તેના ચાર પાયા સિવાય બીજી કોઈ બાજુ પણ પ્રબળ રીતે ચંદ્રતલને અથડાશે, તો પણ ઉતરાણ એકમને કોઈ નુકશાન નહીં થાય. ચંદ્રયાન-૩ના ઉતરાણ એકમમાં વલણ સુધાર વિસ્તાર ૧૦° પ્રતિ સેકંડથી વધારી ને ૨૫° પ્રતિ સેકંડનો કરવામાં આવ્યો છે. વધુમાં, ચંદ્રયાન-૩ ઉતરાણ એકમ લેસર ડોપ્લર વેલોસીમીટર (એલડીવી)થી સજ્જ છે જેના દ્વારા ત્રણ દિશાઓમાં ઉતરાણ એકમ વલણ ચકાસશે અને તેમાં સુધાર કરી શકશે. ચંદ્રયાન-૩ના પાયાની મજબુતાઈ વધારવામાં આવી છે. વળી, તેમાં ઉપકરણોની નકામા થવાનો વિસ્તાર ઘટાડવામાં આવ્યો છે. તે ઉતરાણ માટે વધુ ચોક્કસાઈપૂર્વક 4 km (2.5 mi) x 4 km (2.5 mi) ક્ષેત્રફળનો વિસ્તાર પસંદ કરશે. આ માટે તે ચંદ્રયાન-૨ના ઉતરાણ યુનિટ અને પરિભ્રમણીક એકમ દ્વારા અગાઉ મોકલવામાં આવેલી છબીઓનો ઉપયોગ કરશે. ઇસરોએ યંત્રોમાં માળખાકીય રીતે સુધારો કર્યો છે, પોલિંગ ઉપકરણો વધાર્યા છ, ડાટા આવૃત્તિ અને પ્રસારણ ચોકસાઈ વધારી છે અને ઘણાં નવાં સોફ્ટવેર ઉમેર્યાં છે. સૌથી અગત્યનો ફેરફાર એ છે કે ઉતરાણ એકમની રૂપરેખામાં સુધારો કર્યો છે, જેને કારણે ઉતરાણ એકમ છેલ્લી ક્ષણે પણ ઉતરાણમાં આવેલી મુશ્કેલીથી બચીને ઉતરાણનો સમય બદલીને વધુ યોગ્ય નવી જગ્યા શોધીને નવા સમયે ઉતરાણ કરી શકે છે. જ સૂર્ય અનુસંધાન અભિયાન આદિત્ય-L1 જેવાં આવનારાં અવકાશી અભિયાનોમાં યુરોપિયન અંતરિક્ષ એજન્સીનો સહયોગ મળશે. તેવી જ રીતે, ESAનાં ભવિષ્યના અવકાશી અભિયાનોમાં ઇસરોના પોતાનાં ટ્રેકિંગ વિભાગ દ્વારા ભારત પણ સહયોગ કરશે.
