PV Sindhu: The double Olympic medallist holds an MBA degree!

PV Sindhu made her senior debut in 2009 and has trained under revered coach Mahboob Ali. Know more about the Indian badminton star.

PV Sindhu in action

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu , also known as PV Sindhu , is one of the most decorated Indian athletes of all time.

The badminton star has dominated the courts for the last decade and is the only Indian woman to win two Olympic medals – a silver at Rio 2016 and a bronze at Tokyo 2020 – and a world championship title in 2019.

PV Sindhu has been winning trophies since her childhood, which catapulted her into the limelight at a very young age.

Sindhu has always been in the public eye, thanks to the huge media interest in her. Here we answer some of the most asked questions about PV Sindhu.

Where is PV Sindhu from?

PV Sindhu is from Secunderabad, which is the twin city of Hyderabad in Telangana, situated in the south of India.

However, there have been disputes regarding PV Sidhu’s birth state since Telangana was formed after separating from Andhra Pradesh.

Both states have laid claim to the badminton star, with some calling her a Telangana ‘bidda’ (kid in Telugu) and others countering by calling her an Andhra ‘ammayi’ (girl).

However, her mother P Vijaya has asserted that PV Sindhu is an Indian first, putting all arguments aside. “Let us all enjoy this moment of triumph and look forward to a golden finish and not engage in a debate,” she said after her daughter won silver at Rio 2016.

Who is PV Sindhu’s sister?

PV Sindhu has an elder sister named PV Divya , who was a national level handball player but pursued academics to become a doctor.

Divya got married to Sreeram Goalla in 2012 but PV Sindhu missed the wedding since it was on the same day as her final match at the Syed Modi International India Grand Prix.

"I will try to win the tournament and give it as a gift to her," PV Sindhu told IANS at the time. The Indian shuttler, unfortunately, lost to Indonesia’s Lindaweni Fanetri after a tough fight.

What is PV Sindhu’s height?

PV Sindhu is five feet 11 inches (179cm) tall. She is one of the tallest athletes in women’s badminton and uses her height well for better court coverage and searing smashes.

When did PV Sindhu start playing badminton?

PV Sindhu started playing badminton at the age of eight after getting inspired by Indian badminton legend Pullela Gopichand’s triumph at the All England Open 2001.

The young PV Sindhu first learnt the basics under late coach Mahboob Ali, at his academy located inside the Indian Railways Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications (IRISET) stadium in Secunderabad.

PV Sindhu then shifted to Pullela Gopichand’s academy in Gachibowli, Hyderabad and traveled everyday with her father from her residence in Marredpally, a suburb in Secunderabad, which was around 25km from her new training center.

The youngster was very hardworking and committed to the sport since her childhood. “This is one of the most significant aspects of her game and should take her a long way,” Pullela Gopichand told the Hindu in 2008.

When was PV Sindhu’s debut?

PV Sindhu made her senior international debut on March 24, 2009, at the India Open in Hyderabad, where she lost to Aparna Balan in the qualifiers.

PV Sindhu’s first title at the senior level came at the Maldives International Challenge in 2011. She was just 15-years-old at the time.

Before switching full time to the senior level, Sindhu was already a force in the junior circuit, winning several tournaments in the domestic and international levels.

The Hyderabad youngster’s achievements included gold medals at the All India ranking tournaments (under-10 and under-13), National School Games (under-14 team) and sub-junior nationals (under-13 doubles).

PV Sindhu won bronze at the 2009 Sub-Junior Asian Badminton Championships, which was her debut international event at any level.

What is PV Sindhu’s education?

The Indian badminton player completed her graduation in Bachelors of Commerce (B.Com) from St. Ann’s College for Women in Mehdipatnam, Hyderabad.

PV Sindhu also holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the same college, along with an honorary doctorate from the Chennai Vels University.

Although Sindhu was competing across the world from a young age, she always ensured her studies did not get hampered.

“I have continued to pursue my education while following my dreams in badminton. In fact, I’ve managed to not drop a year or fail until now,” PV Sindhu told The Quint in 2017. “Till the 7th, I used to top my class, and after that, when I started concentrating on badminton, I would still manage well.”

PV Sindhu attended the Auxilium High School in Hyderabad.

Which racket does PV Sindhu use?

PV Sindhu has used both Li Ning and Yonex brands during her career but currently uses the Li Ning badminton rackets .

The Indian star signed a four-year sponsorship deal with Chinese brand Li Ning in 2019 after using Yonex for three years – from 2016 to 2019. Sindhu used Li Ning back in 2014-2015 as well.

PV Sindhu’s racket from the bronze-medal winning match at the Tokyo Olympics was auctioned off to raise funds for a conservation project.

What are PV Sindhu’s hobbies?

PV Sindhu likes listening to music. “I listen to all types of music. Sometimes, I just be in my world, listening to music… when I am getting ready,” PV Sindhu told iDream Sports .

The Indian badminton ace does not enjoy parties and spends her rest days at home with her family. Essentially a vegetarian, she is fond of non-vegetarian food cooked by her mother.

Only at the Olympics can you stumble upon a charming badminton star

biographical sketch pv sindhu biography in english

TOKYO — Into the arena she walked, a tall presence without trying to be a tall presence, and the Olympics had done again what the Olympics can do: They had presented the eyes with a first in-person glimpse of some athlete renowned on some other side of the planet, and they had gladdened the brain with some novel enthrallment.

So there she is, and with the neurons already awake and running around the head, next she went ahead and did something even much more enthralling. She began playing, and gosh. P.V. Sindhu, the Indian sensation from Hyderabad who won an upstart silver medal in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 at age 21 and soon began turning up on those Forbes global athlete-endorsement rankings, plays badminton with so many eye-pleasing elements that it’s hard to corral them all in thought.

Sign up for our Tokyo Olympics newsletter to get a daily viewing guide and highlights from the Games

She plays with geometry, creativity, power, touch, variety, shrewdness and aplomb. It’s like going to some sporting event while also going to some art exhibit. People tend to describe her as “lanky” given her 5-foot-11, but here’s a reminder how lankiness can exist without gawkiness. Thank goodness for such lankiness, the eyes might say, because it certainly helps here, as in her 21-9, 21-6 win Wednesday over N.Y. Cheung of Hong Kong.

Even if your radar does not take many trips into the area of badminton, you might have heard of Sindhu somewhat or less than somewhat. You might have seen her name as some faraway mystery at No. 7 in 2017 on the Forbes list of female athletes and their endorsements, tucked between Venus Williams and Simona Halep. You might have seen her endorsements from a bouquet of sponsors described as right up there among the cricketers, which in India means right up there in the celestial realm of rupees.

Yet even with that . . . and with her 2019 world championship won in Basel, Switzerland . . . and with her world ranking of No. 7 and once as high as No. 2 . . . and with her stirring split-set final in Rio de Janeiro against gold medalist Carolina Marin of Spain . . . and with the Hindustan Times account that during her matches then, “All work came to a standstill as eyes stayed glued to television sets across [India],” as if the nation “believed it was on court with Sindhu” . . . and with that apparent and amusing squabble between two Indian states about from which she hails . . . there’s something still more about the simple act of sitting there and watching. That’s largely because it’s hard to know what might come off the racket next and whether it will sing or sear.

It looked like such quiet, athletic beauty in the pandemic hush, so different from the din of Rio de Janeiro, which, judging by videos, counted among those reminders that if you refer to some place and tell an Indian person, “There’s a lot of Indians there,” you might hear in return, “There’s a lot of Indians everywhere.”

Another Olympic bus ride? At these Games, each is a wondrous journey.

So she reached the round of 16, and then she came to the interview area, or mixed zone. Maybe she would be one of those who brushed by and took two or three questions like some fleeting nuisance and then ran along. Maybe she would be one of those who didn’t stop by at all, maybe even pretending she didn’t notice. Maybe her fame would have conditioned her to act like some sort of cricket diva.

But no! With about eight Indian reporters plus a straggler here and there, in English and in that marvel Hinglish, she carried on for minutes and minutes and minutes with that best kind of charm, the effortless kind. She expressed genuine gratitude that people care about her final scores. She answered questions about everything from female-athlete clothing issues (with gladness there’s no such pressure in her sport), to Simone Biles (with empathy), to the coronavirus pandemic (which enabled her time to learn more skills).

At one point she said of her upcoming match with Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark, “I’m definitely going to miss the crowd.”

The reporters chimed in, “We were there!” — and they were, among the limited voices cheering, with one dude even pulling out a flag of a durable cloth as things veered toward the ending.

She laughed. “Yeah, you guys were there!”

She said later: “Definitely I miss the crowd, but I understand [the pandemic]. I’m sure billions of Indians are supporting and cheering me,” and then she stopped and smiled behind her Team India mask and said, “And thank you for the support!”

She spoke of that hard line in sports, the one between being a 21-year-old greenhorn flitting around all carefree without the expectations and a 26-year-old veteran flying around with the expectations. “Well, it’s very different, I think, for me personally,” from Rio de Janeiro to Tokyo: “Experience-wise, expectations-wise, responsibility-wise, it’s very different.” She said: “Game-wise, a lot has changed. My confidence level. A lot has changed.”

As she put it, she can’t be running around saying, “Okay, I’ve got a silver medal,” and now what? She called it “very important for me to be there,” and by “there,” she meant there in the point at hand rather than in the meaning of the point at hand.

She got a question about the “spiral of negativity” that can greet a loss by someone such as herself, a negativity that breathes in some fraction of fans around the globe but breathes more in India because India has bigger fractions and more fans. And she sounded positively breezy when she said, “For me, I think, some people’s perspective, they might think it is easy,” and, “Sometimes it might not be our day.”

And now the mind had run off completely in a rare venture into the frontier of badminton, with fresh interest in what might happen with this master of the quirky but ancient craft. The Olympics had brought it in front of the daughter of two accomplished volleyball players from the fourth-largest city in India (thus a metropolis), a woman who used to be a girl who had gone with her father to the volleyball court and wandered over to the badminton court, someone it never would have figured to run across in life.

Here they were again, those damned Olympics. They always get you in ways you didn’t know you could get gotten.

More about the Tokyo Olympics

The Tokyo Olympics have come to a close.

  • The Closing Ceremonies brought the Olympics to an official end much the same way the international spectacle began : in a near-empty stadium. It was a fitting end to a complicated Games.
  • Up next: The Beijing Winter Olympics , which begin Feb. 4, 2022. Here’s an early look at the next Games.
  • Fewer and fewer cities want to host the Olympics , columnist Barry Svrluga writes. That should tell the IOC something.
  • The United States finished the Tokyo Olympics with 113 total medals, including 39 gold. China was next best with 88 total and 38 gold. Here’s the complete medal count.

PV Sindhu: The Journey

PV Sindhu Kreedon

Born to national-level volleyball player parents, Ramana and Vijaya, young Sindhu was always inspired by Pullela Gopichand to pursue a career in badminton.

She used to travel 56 km every day for her training at the All England Open Badminton Champion’s Academy. Her hard work bore fruit and she made her mark at the 5th Servo All-India ranking championship.

From here on, she raised her gaming standards higher and higher. She caught the attention of the entire nation by becoming the first woman silver medalist at the Rio Olympics in 2016 & then a bronze medal in Tokyo Olympics 2020.

She also achieved a feat of three consecutive silver medals in official tournaments and matched the record of Lee Chong Wei. Sindhu came to international prominence after she broke into the top 20 of the BWF World Ranking in mid-2012 at the age of 17.

From a small girl who started playing badminton just as a pastime, to India’s first woman silver medalist at the Olympics, it has been quite an incredible journey for Pusarla Venkata Sindhu. There have been some downs, but mostly lots of ups for Sindhu. She has continuously proven her mettle as a world-class badminton player at every stage. Currently, she is ranked at number 2 by the Badminton World Federation.

PV Sindhu Coach: Pullela Gopichand

gopichand - sindhu badminton kreedon

Sindhu was so inspired by All England Open Badminton Champion Pullela Gopichand that it was due to him she decided to play badminton professionally. However, she was guided by the simple and humble badminton wizard Mir Mahboob Ali, when she took her baby steps into the big world of badminton. He taught her everything and played a huge role in shaping her illustrious career.

She used to attend his training at the Indian Railway Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications in Secunderabad. Sadly, the selfless mentor passed away in 2011.

After Mahboob Ali helped Sindhu ace her basics, it was Gopichand who helped her master the game. The badminton champion has trained numerous stars, including Saina Nehwal.

P.V. Sindhu was so dedicated to the training that she used to travel 56 km every day. This hard work and persistence have helped her gain success. No wonder, that her coach is also proud of her. Gopichand said,

“ As a coach, I treat both Saina Nehwal and  PV Sindhu as precious diamonds. Winning or losing happens every day at the Academy in Hyderabad. Win or defeat in game encourages the winner and loser to raise the bar and reach higher.”

The Gold Coast games were very special for the Indian badminton team. The team won a gold medal in the mixed event and Sindhu won the silver in the singles event.

It was a proud moment for Indians, as both the finalists were Indians – Saina Nehwal and P.V. Sindhu.

Saina went on to win the gold by defeating Sindhu 21-18, 21-19, but that day there were no losers for us.

Once again Sindhu showed remarkable class to win a silver medal. This turned out to be her third consecutive silver in major events.

She lost to her nemesis Carolina Marin of Spain in straight sets 19-21, 10-21.

There have been many assumptions in the media about Sindhu losing out in the finals due to some mental block. Some reports suggest that she has cold feet when it comes to finals. It is ridiculous that instead of appreciating her achievements the media is overanalyzing her defeats. Defeats are a part and parcel of a sportsman’s life. Instead of letting them be anchors, they should be used as stepping stones.

Stellar badminton player Prakash Padukone showed a lot of support for Sindhu by saying, “ We should not put too much pressure on her when she is doing well. She is world number three. The focus should be on how we can make her win rather than why she is losing the final again and again. If we keep doing that, she would only feel more pressure .”

BWF World Championships 2019

PV Sindhu was entering the BWF World Championships 2019 at the back of four unsuccessful attempts at gold. Nonetheless, she didn’t carry the load of the past disappointments in the contest, as was evident in her confident play.

The shuttler swiftly made her way to the semi-finals, where she would face the competition’s most challenging task with the opponent being her dreaded foe Chen Yu Fei.

Like a tigress, she put up a pitch-perfect performance to outclass China’s World No.3 in straight sets of 21-7, 21-14 in a one-sided semifinal that lasted 40-minute.

Final Hurdle

PV Sindhu scripted history on 25th August 2019 by becoming the first Indian shuttler to clinch the badminton World Championships by defeating Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in a one-sided final in Basel, Switzerland.

The Olympian was in total control for the entire game, winning the contest by a comfortable 21-7, 21-7. The game lasted just 38 minutes.

Life came full circle for Sindhu, who two years ago, was denied gold at the same platform by the same opponent at Glasgow. However, the only difference was that back then, the game was much more competitive, a fact reflected in the game time of an epic 110-minute. Nonetheless, the Indian evolved from the heart-rending loss with an emphatic win.

“Last time, I lost in the final, before that also I lost in the final, so it is a very important win for me. I want to thank the crowd for supporting me. I won it for my country and I am very proud being an Indian,” Sindhu said after the match. “A big thanks to my coach Kim and Gopi sir and my supporting staff and I dedicate this win to my mom, it’s her birthday today,” she added.

The phrase “third time lucky” indeed turned out to be true for PV Sindhu.

T 3269 – PV Sindhu .. !! Champion of the World , Badminton .. such an incredibly proud moment for INDIA .. just so honoured to have spent sometime with you at KBC .. YOU PERSEVERED AND NEVER GAVE UP ! THAT IS THE SPIRIT OF INDIA AND OF CHAMPIONS SUCH AS YOURSELF 🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳 pic.twitter.com/qIUYxmjDmM — Amitabh Bachchan (@SrBachchan) August 25, 2019

PV Sindhu’s Journey in 2022 & 2023

Sindhu clinched victory twice at the Syed Modi International and the Swiss Open, outplaying Malvika Bansod and Busanan Ongbamrungphan, respectively. Following a fierce quarterfinal win over He Bingjiao at the Badminton Asia Championships, she secured bronze after a tight loss to Akane Yamaguchi in the semis, marking her second medal at the tournament. Adding to her achievements, Sindhu triumphed at the Singapore Open, prevailing over Wang Zhiyi in the final match.

Her standout moment came at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where she secured her first-ever gold in the women’s singles against Michelle Li. This victory made her only the second women’s singles player to claim a complete set of Commonwealth Games medals. Despite her unbeaten run in the mixed team event, earning India a silver, an unfortunate left foot stress fracture sidelined her from all subsequent tournaments for the rest of the year, including the World Championships and World Tour Finals.

Sindhu marked her comeback from injury absence by competing in the initial tournament of 2023, the Malaysia Open. In February, she contributed to the Indian team’s success, securing a bronze medal at the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships, a historic achievement for India in this tournament. Her first final appearance of the season came at the 2023 Spain Masters, though she faced defeat in straight games against Gregoria Mariska Tunjung.

A look at major achievements of PV Sindhu as World Champion clinches historic bronze at Tokyo Olympics 2020

TN Sports Desk

Often called a 'big tournament player', Sindhu has become only the fourth women shuttler ever to have won successive Olympic medals.

List of PV Sindhu Achievements

PV Sindhu, the name, after today’s bronze medal victory in Tokyo Olympics has acquired iconic status in Indian badminton. Many experts or pundits have already started to hail Sindhu as India’s greatest athlete ever at the Olympics. Sindhu, whose full name is Pusarla Venkata Sindhu was born to parents who were both national-level volleyball players. She first burst into the national scene after winning the bronze in the 2013 World Championships aged just 18, something not achieved since Prakash Padukone’s Bronze in 1983.

This began a love affair between Sindhu and World Championships, where she has won a medal every time barring 2015. Although she always came close to winning the coveted title, it was only in 2019 she was crowned world champion where she beat Japanese Nozomi Okuhara. Sindhu went into the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil with very little media glare as not many expected her to bring home a medal.

But what followed sent the entire cricket-crazy country into hysteria as she reached the finals of the women’s single, something never achieved by any Indian before. Although she won the silver medal, Sindhu became the role model and a superstar for millions of Indians across the world overnight. The government of India in recognition of her rare feet awarded her with the highest sporting honour in India, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2016.

After her latest success, Sindhu not only became the first Indian woman to win two Olympic medals but also only the fourth women badminton player to have won successive Olympic medals. She has slowly gained a reputation of being a ‘big tournament player,’ after her consistent performance in big tournaments.

P. V. Sindhu – an Indian professional badminton player. She is the first Indian to win the BWF World Championships. She is also one of the two Indian badminton players to ever win an Olympic medal – the other being Saina Nehwal .

P. V. Sindhu won silver medal in women’s singles at 2018 Commonwealth Games as well as 2018 Asian Games . She was also a silver medalist at the 2017 and the 2018 edition of BWF World Championships. In 2018, she became the first Indian to win the BWF World Tour Finals after defeating Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the final.

P. V. Sindhu came to international attention when she broke into the top 20 of the BWF World Ranking in September 2012 at the age of 17. In 2013, she became the first ever Indian women’s singles player to win a medal at the Badminton World Championships. In March 2015, she is the recipient of India’s fourth highest civilian honor, the Padma Shri. Her silver medal win in the women’s singles event of the 2016 Summer Olympics made her the first Indian shuttler to reach the final of an Olympics badminton event and the youngest Indian to make a podium finish in an individual event at the Olympics. She is among the top five shuttlers in women’s singles category.

With an earnings of $8.5 million, Sindhu was ranked seventh in Forbes’ list of “Highest-Paid Female Athletes 2018” based on earnings from prize money and endorsements between June 2017 to June 2018.

In 2019, she became the second woman after Zhang Ning to win five medals at the world championships. With earnings of $5.5 million, Sindhu was ranked thirteenth in Forbes’ list of “Highest-Paid Female Athletes 2019” based on earnings from prize money and endorsements between June 2018 to June 2019.

Early life and training:

P. V. Sindhu was born in Hyderabad to P. V. Ramana and P. Vijaya. Both her parents have been national level volleyball players. Her father, Ramana, who was a member of the Indian volleyball team that won the bronze medal in 1986 Seoul Asian Games, received the Arjuna Award in 2000 for his contribution to the sports. She has an elder sister, P. V. Divya, who was a national-level handball player. However, she was not interested in pursuing professional sports and became a doctor.

P. V. Sindhu lives in Hyderabad. Though her parents played professional volleyball, Sindhu choose badminton over it because she drew inspiration from the success of Pullela Gopichand, the 2001 All England Open Badminton Champion. She eventually started playing badminton from the age of eight. Sindhu first learned the basics of the sport with the guidance of Mehboob Ali at the badminton courts of Indian Railway Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications in Secunderabad. Soon after, she joined Pullela Gopichand’s Gopichand Badminton Academy. While profiling Sindhu’s career, a correspondent with The Hindu wrote:

The fact that she reports on time at the coaching camps daily, travelling a distance of 56 km from her residence, is perhaps a reflection of her willingness to complete her desire to be a good badminton player with the required hard work and commitment.

Gopichand seconded this correspondent’s opinion when he said that

The most striking feature in Sindhu’s game is her attitude and the never-say-die spirit.

After joining Gopichand’s badminton academy, Sindhu won several titles. In the under-10 years category, she won the 5th Servo All India ranking championship in the doubles category and the singles title at the Ambuja Cement All India ranking. In the under-13 years category, Sindhu won the singles title at the Sub-juniors in Pondicherry, doubles titles at the Krishna Khaitan All India Tournament, IOC All India Ranking, the Sub-Junior Nationals and the All India Ranking in Pune.
