"If it's crap, we'll tell you"

From left to right:

  • Cyrus (Real Name: Chris Cox) — The most geeky guy, known for his love of The Coen Brothers and the most comic book-loving of the group. He also loves cats and puns. Due to his accent, he often pronounces the word "Women" as "Woman," as was pointed out several times by his coworkers. While Carlyle was the frequent Better Than Sex giver, this guy is the mercilessly frequent F**k You giver.
  • Co-Host 3000 (Real Name: Tony Guerrero) — Their perverted robotic companion who loves crappy films and is an unabashed fan of Adam Sandler .
  • Korey Coleman — The animator who is known for his goofiness, lover of zombie films, and nitpicking small logic problems. Naturally, as an animator, Korey has a strong love for old animation, such as classic Disney and Warner Bros. cartoons, Peanuts animated specials and Charles Schulz’ comic strips, Ralph Bakshi and The Smurfs . Similarly, he’s also very fond of puppets, especially, but not limited to, Jim Henson’s Muppets and Sesame Street , as he has expressed in the past that he desired to be a puppeteer before gaining an interest in animation. Also revealed through the video game podcast that he is a Resident Evil fan. His mancrushes are Channing Tatum , Ryan Gosling and Michael Fassbender , though he mostly expresses an affinity for older actresses, particularly Helen Mirren .
  • Leon (Real Name: Martin Thomas) — The old wise guy, known for his hatred of Adam Sandler and shares a love of Spider-Man 3 with Cyrus. Secretly into Disney Channel shows. As of May 23rd, 2013, Leon's role on the site has been limited to reviews and ACOCO only.
  • Carlyle (Real Name: Christopher Robert Cargill) — The dude who was usually the defender of many films, and was known for his friendship with Ain't It Cool webmaster Harry Knowles and his love of Michael Bay and Quentin Tarantino films. Called Massawyrm on Ain't It Cool News and Twitter. Has since left the site to work as a screenwriter and an author.

Videos & Podcasts aired:

  • A Couple of Cold Ones - A podcast that aired on Mondays hosted by Korey and Leon (and formerly Carlyle). They discuss the box office's top five, gossip, and read fan e-mails.
  • Let's Do This! - A podcast between Korey and Co-Host 3000 and Billy (who joined after several years, and was initially known as "Uncle Popcorn"). It began as a spin-off of A Couple of Cold Ones when Co-Host temporarily filled in for Carlyle. It proved to be so popular they made it it's own entity. The show claims to specialize in "bullshit" and is mainly the three hanging out. However, over the past couple years, and especially since the addition of Billy, the show has become more intense, sometimes dealing with race and political issues, often to the chagrin of the fandom . invoked Alan, once a humble Spillio, stayed overnight at Korey's place for six months and became a semi-regular. Known for his fear of horses and quiet demeanor, he is perhaps the largest Sho'Nuff fan in existence.
  • The Spill Call-In Show - Korey takes calls from and talks to fans on the site. It had no set day but generally aired on Saturdays.
  • SPOILED: Korey and Co-host 3000 answer spoiler questions of the latest movies or television episodes from their fans. Surprisingly, Leon aka The Spoiler is not part of the podcast.
  • The Daily Spill: a new podcast that aired throughout the week from Monday to Thursday in which Korey and Cyrus discuss the latest news in movies, television and occasionally video games. The podcast gives a run-down on new home video releases on Tuesday and new movie trailers on Thursday. Whenever Korey or Cyrus aren't available they are usualy replaced by Co-Host 3000.

Past podcasts:

  • Blu Tuesday - Another hour long podcast between Korey and Carlyle. It specialized in new DVD releases. It aired on Tuesdays . It was announced on the 8/30/2010 episode of A Couple of Cold Ones that Blu Tuesday was cancelled.
  • Untitled Billy and Korey show - a spinoff from Let's Do This where Billy and Korey have freeform conversation based on the topics suggested by Spillios. The podcast was irregular and short-lived as it was laid off before it got a proper name when the site went into the Phase Two revision.
  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot : Korey claims that Co-Host's creator abandoned him because he was "too much of a smartass to handle".
  • Co-Host has an intense (and, initially, almost irrational) hatred for Kevin James. To the point that, in the start of their review for Here Comes the Boom , he exclaims loudly that he's willing to give it a "FUCK YOU"!
  • Art Evolution : For the longest time, the video reviews were a lot of Stock Footage of them discussing the film at the table, with a few clips of related gags. The newer reviews have been almost entirely unique animation. Also of note is how Leon now has a graying soul patch in his beard, indicating his status as the Cool Old Guy of the group.
  • Nick Hodges started out as a member of the Spill forums, occasionally appearing on episodes of ACOCO and the annual "Let's Have It!" podcast. Around two years later, he was invited to join The Loading Bar.
  • Professor Jeff was initially hired as an animator, but Korey decided to make him the host of The Loading Bar's reviews after being exposed to Jeff's vast knowledge of video games.
  • Fungus Monkey (also an animator) and Fish also joined Spill as members and were later hired as regulars on LEOG. Fish, however, was Demoted to Extra on at least two separate occasions.
  • Awesome Mccoolname : The Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li review uses trope, combined with Name McAdjective . Korey: What's this girl's name I'm looking for right here? Carlyle: I think her name was Breasty Mchotpants. Korey: Breasty Mcsuckass was — Moon Bloodgood. Cool name, bad actress.
  • Korey's is people interrupting him in the middle of his point.
  • Korey and most of the others also hate non-specific questions like "What is your favorite _______?"
  • Another one for Korey is people who use the bathroom without locking the door.
  • Yet another one for Korey: Seltzer and Friedberg
  • Cyrus and Christianity.
  • Carlyle would occasionally go berserk when someone compared a bad movie to Bratz or Daddy Day Camp.
  • Leon and "Disney dad stories"—movies that follow a father who works hard to support his family, but apparently is an asshole because he doesn't spend enough time with the children.
  • Although it's rarely discussed, Leon has been quite vocal about his hatred for teenagers and whiny twenty-something's. (See Charlie Bartlett , Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist , and Post Grad .)
  • Co-Host, more than any other member of the crew, would be extremely unforgiving to children's films that he felt were dumbing themselves down for kids. Specifically, he notes how films like Marmaduke are made for purely commercial reasons, with minimal effort put in because the executives know that the target audience won't be asking much from them, something that's unforgivable in an era where Pixar's films show how great family entertainment can be.
  • Better than Sex : This is the name of the highest reviewer rating a movie can receive. To date (March 2011), only three movies (with the fourth one for the Justin Bieber film being a joke) have ever received such a rating from a majority of the crew.
  • The review for Horrible Bosses has Leon and Cyrus talking about how much they can relate to premise because of their own boss. Cue reaction shots on Korey.
  • Occasionally, the Spill crew (usually Korey and Co-Host in their podcasts) will do this at the expense of the company that owns them, Hollywood.com.

spill.com movie reviews

  • Black Gal on White Guy Drama : Defied by Korey in the Lakeview Terrace review. He hates movies where black men get angry at black women dating white men, insisting that real black guys don't care about that... they're too busy chasing white girls.
  • Brick Joke : Prevalent in video reviews, though some cases are likely to sneak into the confines of an audio one. The video for The Incredible Burt Wonderstone starts with Cyrus pulling a variety of objects from Leon's afro. After Korey becomes fed up with the crew dismissing his lukewarm review of the film, he decides to pull some magic of his own and pops out of Leon's afro to scare Cyrus .
  • Broke the Rating Scale : Disaster Movie was so awful that it forced Korey to create the Fuck You!!!! rating. The rating stuck, despite it never becoming an official part of the system.
  • For Korey and Co-Host, it's "Dem funny book boys" of LEOG. For the LEOG, it was ACOCO but that moved over onto The Loading Bar. For The Loading Bar (mostly Jason and Korey), it's Nick. Plus, you know, SHUT THE FUCK UP GRANT!
  • Harris seems to be serving the role in LEOG, so much so that he got fed up with it and quit the show as an April fools day prank .
  • Brian seemed to become the official Butt Monkey after joining as a member, earning constant ire from Rubio much in the way Harris did. In fact, the April Fool's Day episode was supposed to originally just be a podcast about B-movies that Brian would help to co-host(he was a guest at the time). Leon and Cyrus would constantly mention in future episodes how embarrassed they were that the prank fight overshadowed Brian's Day in the Limelight .
  • The one Butt-Monkey everyone, including the forum members can all laugh at together, is "DJ" Kent. It didn't help matters either that his early review for X-Men Origins: Wolverine ended up on CNN.
  • Caustic Critic : The crew are more benevolent examples of this.
  • Korey: "Fuck yo thoughts!"
  • Co-Host: "Don't tell me your problems!"
  • Leon: "Tell some jokes!"
  • Kevin: "Yes!/Right!"
  • Characterization Marches On : Early on the guys went about portraying themselves as broad stereotypes (Korey was the womanizer, Cyrus was the virgin, etc.). However, once their podcasts became commonplace and they got to know their fans, they slowly dropped the pretense and are basically themselves now.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome : Edie, more or less. She has been mentioned on occasion in regard to her current life, and has briefly resurfaced in a 2010 podcast. Gone unreferenced for years now (as of November 2012).
  • Cloudcuckoolander : Al Frank. Twice a guest on A Couple Of Cold Ones, his legends of woe and madness baffle, disturb and enrapture Korey and Leon (the latter to the point of tears, as affirmed in the 11/4/12 ACOCO). A self-described practitioner of "Hoodoo."
  • The most notable being the entire Meet the Spartans and Meek's Cutoff reviews. Leon: Ok, you guys have said fuck 47 times now. Co-Host: FUCK YOU!!!
  • There's also District 9 ... Carlyle: Shut the fuck up, motherfucker, cause you're about to get FUCKED !
  • And G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra . Co-Host: I fuckin' thought somebody had fuckin' put something in my fuckin' drink.
  • There's a surprising number of N-bombs dropped in the latter half of the Grindhouse review, which ultimately results in Cyrus hanging .
  • The Django Unchained review also has Korey and Co-Host dropping Cluster N-Bombs to criticize the film's use of such.
  • Cooland Unusual Punishment : When Prof. Jeff keeps dying and getting lost on the Happy Hour of Super Metroid, Jason threatens to bust out the fanfiction. Erotic Metroid Fanfiction. And he does. Hilarity Ensues .
  • Deadpan Snarker : During an episode of ACOCO, Carlyle was asked what actor he would like to see play him in a movie. His answer was Ryan Reynolds because "He's got that deadpan snarker attitude like I do."
  • Carlyle has stopped appearing in reviews, the last one with him being Clash of the Titans , only showing up to do ACOCO until eventually leaving that as well. This is actually because he has two other jobs reviewing movies and was burning out, so it was his own choice.
  • A good chunk of the LEOG went from regulars to Support League status on their own volition.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending : Frequent.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin : Their pragmatic middle ratings. Genuinely intended to convey how much effort and money you should put into seeing the movie.
  • Expy: Co-Host is a beer drinking, womanizing, foul mouthed Mexican robot. Sound familiar?
  • Five-Token Band
  • F-- : The unofficial "F**K YOU!" rating.
  • Four-Point Scale : Most movies will go between Full Price and Some Ol' Bullshit. Very few movies have gotten an overall Better than Sex rating, and a movie has to be incredibly bad to get a Fuck You rating.
  • Fun with Acronyms : The website's podcasts are usually known by their acronyms, but the one for A Couple of Cold Ones (ACOCO) is quite catchy.
  • Girl Scouts Are Evil : In the Kick-Ass review, and the trope image.
  • Has a Type : Cyrus has a well known love of redheads.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners : Jason and Prof. Jeff spend a lot of time together (Mostly due to Happy Hours). So much so that Jason's wife has taken to calling Jeff "The other woman".
  • Human-Focused Adaptation : Co Host calls it the He-Man Syndrome.
  • Cyrus. The mere mention of God or religion causes him to either get super angry or bitterly sarcastic. Also quite evident whenever he reviews a film with religious themes such as The Book of Eli . Though he claims to only be agnostic, Carlyle, the Token Religious Teammate , claims he's pretty blatantly an atheist or at least an agnostic-atheist.
  • Averted with Korey and Leon and most of the LEOG, almost all of them don't believe in God but are far from angry and attempt to support opposing views.
  • Hot Librarian : Cat.
  • I Have Boobs, You Must Obey! : The LEOG Geek Girls often use this.
  • Better than Sex ! - The Broke the Rating Scale rating, given for films which are beyond the expectation for a good film and magnificently set a new cinematic standard.
  • Full Price!! - Genuinely good films according to current standard, has little to no flaws.
  • Matinee! - Entertaining films with some jarring flaws that doesn't justify paying full price for, but still worth seeing at the theater.
  • Rental - A subjective rating, usually it refers to a movie that is not good enough to see at a theater but is not terrible. Sometimes it just refers to a movie that can be viewed better at home (such as a horror movie or a comedy).
  • Some Ole Bulls** t! - Films that are poorly made, or films that are simply bad but doesn't offend the viewers in any way.
  • F** k You!!! - An unofficial rating, the equivalent of the Better Than Sex rating for bad films. These films are bad to the point of being offensive to the viewers and the Spill crew, often in more ways than one.
  • Ink-Suit Actor
  • Insistent Terminology : Cyrus is from Virginia , not West Virginia .
  • Ironic Episode Title : A Couple of Cold Ones is the podcast that features the hosts drinking the least.
  • Kayfabe : Aside from referring to each other via aliases sans Korey, they all have "characters" they play in reviews that are exaggerated versions of their real personalities. Downplayed in podcasts with the exception of Co-Host, where they go out of their way to maintain the act of him being a robot (for example, he'll refer to his family members as "people who like to act like [his] family").
  • Cyrus, Grant, and Co-Host (occasionally).
  • Korey does this during the review of Paranormal Activity 4 , speaking in a booming voice reminiscent of a black Baptist preacher (complete with appropriate dress) while describing how much he hated the film.
  • Brian takes this tropes to new levels.
  • Many audio reviews from late 2006-summer 2010 were never released until December 2010. Plenty of other reviews, such as Casino Royale (2006) , The Curious Case of Benjamin Button , Inglourious Basterds and Winter's Bone are still missing, though.
  • Also, the infamous LEOG Halloween episodes.
  • Morgan Freeman is often referred to as the "magical , mystical negro" .
  • During one review, Cyrus fears that he and Carlyle are only kept on the site to be Korey and Leon's "magical, mystical white guys".
  • Mind Screw : The Time Travel episode of LEOG starts with the last segment, Beau is back, and Harris is dating some woman named Kelly. it turns out it was the result of Leon tampering with Peters Time machine/web shooters
  • N-Word Privileges : One of their main problems with Django Unchained was that they felt that Quentin Tarantino didn't have these privileges, and that his previous overuse of it in his last films made the overuse of it in Django , even in a proper time period, more gratuitous - especially when Leon and Cyrus pointed out they were the only black folks in the theatre, uncomfortably watching a nearly-totally-white audience laughing at various racist jokes in the film. It's also used in the video review, where Leon tackles on the Token White Cyrus and beats the shit out of him (off-screen) after he tries to use the N-word like Korey and Co-Host did throughout the review.
  • Nature Abhors a Virgin : Early on, Cyrus was often mocked for being a virgin.
  • "No. Just… No" Reaction : The Vampires Suck video review consists of a 45-second clip of Seltzer and Friedberg 's trademark "humor" (two Cutaway Gags made to make dated references to the pop culture at the time). The last seven seconds is Cyrus staring at the camera before delivering his grade: "FUCK YOU."
  • Nothing Exciting Ever Happens Here : In their review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows : Part 1 : Leon: This is for everybody who's been reading or watching the movies up till now. Co-Host: What do I have to research? Because the movie I saw tonight, nothing goddamn happened. I mean, it was just kids hanging out in the woods. There was nothing going on...
  • Currently within the LEOG: Harris and Cat
  • As well as Mandy Savage and Peter "Fungus Monkey".
  • For the Podcasts: The top 5 and emails on ACOCO. Goatsie playing guitar and the "Fuck yo thoughts!" section on Let's Do This.
  • Whenever Carlyle is on ACOCO: "Live from the Spill Studios located behind a liquor store on the I35 interchange, it's time once again for a A Couple of Cold Ones with Korey, Leon and Carlyle."
  • Korey finding new ways to introduce the Top 5, bonus points if he manages to trick Leon.
  • "Long Live the League!"
  • Periphery Hatedom : Invoked. Korey attempts to avert this by trying to review most things from the viewpoint of the intended audience. The others often ridicule him for this.
  • The Pollyanna : Good lord, Randy. The man gets cancer and is immediately cracking jokes about it.
  • Most of their reviews are no stranger to curses , but the more coarse ones get bleeped the f*** out.
  • The Vampires Suck review, on the other hand, consists entirely of two uncensored words. "Fuck you."
  • The beginning of the Hancock review: Cyrus: Spill.com presents a family friendly review of Hancock. Carlyle: Han, what? Cyrus: Aw, FUCK , Carlyle!
  • Product Placement : The site has been getting shit for this lately as they have been paid to advertise MacGruber and Jonah Hex (2010) , going so far to make animated videos for them...never mind the fact they mostly panned the actual films in their reviews.
  • Cyrus aka The PUNisher
  • Brian Salisbury is quickly becoming one, as well.
  • Remember When You Blew Up a Sun? : When Korey threw a chair (at a wall) back when they were on access television.
  • Their review of Sucker Punch : "You know what? Take the 'Punch' out of it, just 'Sucker', alright?" — said Korey Coleman.
  • Beastly review: Co-Host 3000: I will give the movie credit though: You are given a fair warning at the very beginning, where you see one of the fucking err... fugly Olsen twin— Leon: Olsen twin? Co-Host 3000: —addresses the screen and addresses the audiences by tell[ing] them "Get ready to embrace the suck." ( Spill crew's laughter ) Co-Host 3000 : Wow, you really embrace it. Leon: That-that is ballsy for a movie to look you in the eyes and tell you "Embrace the suck"! Korey: By the way, none of us embrace this, okay? It was forced upon us. Cyrus: However, we acknowledge that it did in fact, suck.
  • Cop Out review: "I mean, just think about — Okay, the name of this movie is 'Cop Out', and this... that name alone has so much more hidden meanings into it than we'll ever know because Holy Jesus! I cannot believe what I suffered through tonight." said Co-Host 3000.
  • The Cabin in the Woods review: "It gave me a cabin in the wood " — guest reviewer Brian Salisbury.
  • A Thousand Words review: Co-Host 3000: Have we—Have we mentioned the title of this movie? Korey: A Thousand Words. Co-Host 3000: No, no. Actually, it's A Thousand Deaths of Eddie Murphy . ( Korey's laughter ) Co-Host 3000: 'Cause every goddamn frame is literally killing Eddie Murphy's career. Korey: Oh, I though you were gonna say A Thousand Words Can't Describe How Bad This Movie Is .
  • Revolving Door Casting : LEOG
  • Robot Buddy : Co-Host 3000
  • In episodes where Korey and Grace Randolph (from Beyond the Trailer ) team up to give their movie wish lists like for The Dark Knight Rises .
  • Also done in the groups parody trailer for MacGruber , wherein an animated Korey, Cyrus, Cohost and Leon are inserted into the film's actual trailer.
  • In fact the Let's Do This! podcast is so deeply based in its running gags that it is often joked that it is borderline impossible for a new fan to listen to it.
  • On LEOG, some members have a tendency to accidentally refer to Leon as his real name ("Martin). Usually, either Leon or Cyrus are quick to joke that Martin is actually the name of Leon's driver.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl : During the Loading Bar Happy Hour of Slender, we learn that Korey, Professor Jeff and Jason all do this. Especially Korey.
  • Cyrus has walked out of movies the most out of the four reviewers, usually due to the movie being so terrible he can't stand it. Korey, and occasionally Leon, do it to a lesser extent by falling asleep.
  • Harris pulls one after Rubio keeps making fun of his love of anime. turns out it was an April fools day joke between him and Rubio on the audience.
  • Similar to Harris and Rubio, Cyrus and Co Host had an infamously real fight during the Lockout review that culminated in them each leaving the recording session in anger. Luckily, the two managed to hug it out almost immediately afterward.
  • Some of the members have alluded to having a "one walk out per season" policy leading to jokes about not giving a movie the satisfaction of making them use their one walkout.
  • The Smurfette Principle : Early in the site's history they brought on Edie, but she ended up leaving. Later they brought in actual Spill fan Tessa to review but she lived in New York and could only review when Korey was up there. Meanwhile, Cat is currently the Token Girl of the LEOG.
  • DoubleToasted , the site Korey and Martin (Leon) created through Kickstarter after Spill.com ended acts as one to Spill. Think of it as Spill minus Cyrus and Co Host .
  • Stealth Pun : Cyrus, surprise , pulls off a nice one in the American Reunion review. Korey: Well, I had to do some American Pie math here. Cyrus: You have to multiply the first movie by 3.14.
  • Token Girl : Edie, originally. Currently Cat is the only main girl on the LEOG, the rest have been Demoted to Extra .
  • Token Religious Teammate : Carlyle, though he rarely ever brings it up outside of the occasional podcast segment.
  • True Companions : The main critics, who have been friends for years and are as close as a family, The LEOG, and the Spill fan community.
  • Unsettling Gender-Reveal : Joked about regarding Olga Kurylenko . After James Bond , Max Payne , and Agent 47 ALL were ( somehow ) not interested in sleeping with her, Cory reasoned that she was actually a ladyboy.
  • Where da White Women At? : Billy from Let's Do This! Has a fondness for the white women. Rachel, featured recently on Let's Do This, is living proof.

spill.com movie reviews

When talking to Korey Coleman about Spill.com , the now-defunct movie review website he founded in 2006, he's well aware that people are familiar with the roots of the organization. "Everybody's heard these origin stories," he admits. However, it's a story worth revisiting, especially since the heroes are once again returning to positions of influence in the world of online film commentary. It's the tale of five movie lovers – Coleman, Martin Thomas, Chris Cox, Tony Guerrero, and C. Robert Cargill – and how they built something grand, lost everything but their fans, and carried on with their heads held high.

Up until its closure in December 2013, Spill was an Austin-based hub not just for movie fans, but also lovers of comics, TV, podcasts, and video games. With over 48,000 registered members at its peak, Spill was successful enough to launch an annual convention, Spill Dot Con. The site set itself apart from countless other review sites by including animated reviews with rapid-fire humor. Coleman was in charge of animation, a task he refined through his experience at the Heart of Texas Productions studio, as well as Austin cable-access favorite The Reel Deal .

The Reel Deal was where Coleman began to assemble the crew that would eventually become the mainstays of Spill. First was Tony Guerrero, a devoted fan who was fresh out of high school. Then came Martin Thomas, a graphic designer and former comic book colorist. Chris Cox gave up one of his bartending shifts to help out. Cargill joined soon after, and then there were five. For an entire decade, The Reel Deal was a laid-back place to joke about movies. "It was 10 years of just goofing around," Coleman recalls. "It was like our poker night on Wednesdays."

Spill was the spiritual successor to The Reel Deal , and it took off like wildfire. People from around the world showed up at Spill Dot Con. Visitors who met on the website's forums started dating and getting married. The five guys who got together to crack jokes about movies ended up making some very real emotional connections with fans. But eventually, things started to change at Spill. The site was bought by Hollywood.com in 2009, and while the initial pay raises that came with the acquisition were warmly welcomed, troubling signs slowly began to pop up. The Hollywood staff would eventually lose interest, and on December 20, 2013, Spill was taken down. "Unless we could make lots of money, there was only so long they were willing to pay us to tell dick jokes on the Internet," Thomas notes in an irreverent eulogy of sorts.

Here's where the old origin stories stop and the new ones begin. If you've come here looking for the tale of five critics, irritated and resentful at the collapse of their beloved site, then you've come to the wrong place. "Everyone thinks I have anger behind this," Coleman says. "It's business, man. I got eight good years out of this company. I have no bitterness toward [Hollywood] at all." That might be the most interesting revelation out of all this: Spill was not the be-all, end-all goal. It was just one step in a larger, more fragmented journey.

Chris Cox

In the months following the dissolution of Spill, the critics regrouped and focused on new projects. Well before the shutdown, an amiable parting of the ways seemed imminent. "Even on their best days," explains Coleman, "I could tell people kind of wished they were doing their own thing, and I didn't begrudge them that." So, rather than keeping the whole crew together, the group split up to home in on their individual passions. Downsizing from the larger Spill staff was also a welcome change. "I think what we were doing was too big. I think it's best to concentrate on something smaller when you're starting out," Coleman observes.

One of the new projects falls under the leadership of Chris Cox. He's now one of the minds behind OneOfUs.net , a site whose mission statement proudly declares itself a "one-stop hub for all geek passion." Looking at Cox's house, it's clear he certainly lives up to the statement. He has Muppets Most Wanted playing on a large TV screen, and his cat Monkey is weaving its way through tall stacks of DVDs and memorabilia. A full-size Yellow Lantern power battery is sitting on his mantle. He says that the network of podcasts he's put together is what sets OneOfUs apart from other similar sites. "We constantly trade back and forth off one another's podcasts, we film short videos, [and] there's a lot of excitement within the community and the staff itself."

Tony Guerrero is the one Spill critic who has chosen not to pursue new endeavors in the world of film, electing instead to focus on his family. Cargill, on the other hand, has started to gain recognition in the world of movies far beyond Austin. He cowrote the 2012 horror hit Sinister , published the novel Dreams and Shadows last year, and is now hard at work on two more big-screen adaptations – one for the Deus Ex video game series, and one for a Harlan Ellison episode of The Outer Limits . His colleagues are hardly surprised that he's found such success. "I actually lived with Cargill for a couple of years," Cox recalls, "so I can tell you how hard that guy worked when he wasn't making any money."

As for Coleman and Thomas, the downtime between Spill's shutdown and their eventual next project was short-lived ... just three days long, to be exact. "I was ready to leave the country," Coleman says. "I was going to move to Turkey, and I was just going to spend some time writing and drawing, because I hardly had any time to do that on my own." He might have followed through with that plan had Austin magician Brian Brushwood not encouraged him to hang on to the audience he'd worked so hard to build. A Kickstarter campaign was launched with the goal of $30,000, and within days, Coleman and Thomas collected more than four times that amount. They now had the funds to start DoubleToasted.com , their new site.

Predictably, many former Spill users have now migrated to both DoubleToasted and OneOfUs, but in an age in which new movie review websites pop up weekly, what sets them apart from the rest of the voices in the crowd? The consensus seems to be one word – personality. Thomas points out that actual film criticism is now less of a priority than building shows around the personalities of the hosts. "We have our movie podcast that we do in the middle of the week, but most of the other shows are more free-form," he says. Coleman reiterates the need to be unique. "There are billions of people on the Internet, millions are doing podcasts and blogs, and I'm sure there's another subdivision of those millions doing movie reviews," he remarks. "If you don't have a personality that connects with people, then they're going to listen to the person that does connect with them. Why do you know some directors by name, and some you don't? Why do you know Quentin Tarantino? You know him because of his movies, but also because you constantly see him out there being a personality himself." It's an apt comparison – Tarantino famously said he didn't go to film school, he went to films. This is the Spill style of movie criticism, alive and well today. Academic background in film study is welcome, but it takes a backseat to relatability, quick banter, and a general understanding of what makes a movie tick.

Armed with a wealth of personality, both DoubleToasted and OneOfUs want to be recognized as a couple of the strongest options in the rapidly flooding market of online film commentary. "It's definitely as crowded as it could possibly get," Cox says. "Everybody wants to do their own thing, and I think a lot of it's just the fascination with the newness of it all." Thomas agrees that the landscape may be getting oversaturated. "It's so prevalent that it almost loses its value, which is why we try to do something different with it." But the proprietors of the sites are quick to point out that they aren't rivals. Cox is very complimentary of the DoubleToasted crew, and the feeling is mutual. "I think Chris has done a great job of taking whatever he can take from this experience [at Spill] and making something new out of it," says Coleman. "I admire him for that."

Coleman, Thomas, and Cox all have their eyes set on the future, but they don't mind looking back on the past. When asked how they want Spill to be remembered, they all instantly talk about the fans rather than themselves. "It gave so many people who feel like outcasts one home, where there were other people like them," says Thomas. "They felt like we were friends, they discovered new best friends. And you know, the spirit of it still lives on." Cox is also surprised by how far the site's influence once reached. "I have this enormous array of friends now, across the globe, because of Spill. That'll always be one of the most valuable things to ever happen to me," he states. Looking ahead, though, Coleman frankly acknowledges how quickly this could all disappear. "I'm very realistic about this. If I can't sustain it, there's always Turkey."

Spill.com was a movie and video game review, discussion and news website. It was the continuation of the 9-year-old Austin, Texas-based public-access television cable TV show called The Reel Deal. There were four main film critic contributors to the website, collectively known as the Spill Crew, including Korey Coleman, Chris Cox, Martin Thomas, C. Robert Cargill, and Tony Guerrero. Under aliases, with the exception of Coleman, they reviewed movies as animated versions of themselves or in uncut audio reviews, maintaining their personas in weekly podcasts. The website was owned by Hollywood.com, under R&S Investments. Stylistically, the site strived to maintain a "down-to-earth vibe." As of July 2013, Spill.com had over 50,000 registered members. On December 6, 2013, it was announced that the site will be shutting down. As of December 20, 2013, The URL for the website now redirects to the Hollywood.com website. Their final review was for the 2013 Disney film Saving Mr. Banks. Founder Korey Coleman posted on his Facebook page that he cannot share details regarding the shutdown but that he has mostly made peace with "past events" and "everything is fine". He also received funds via a successful Kickstarter to start a new website that is a spiritual successor to Spill.com titled Double Toasted alongside Martin Thomas. Chris Cox, better known as Cyrus, since, started his own website OneOfUs.net.

Movie Review Site Spill.com Will Be Shut Down

A rather influential movie review site has been forced to shut it's doors. The founder of the site chose to leave a very heartfelt message on the matter.

spill.com movie reviews

Many of you have heard already that Spill.com will be no more after December. I want to thank every talented person who was employed by this site for your years of committed hard work. You may not have noticed, but you are an inspiration. I won't lie, I'm a little jealous of your skills. However, you make me work that much harder, and will continue to do so. I respect you immensely. I want to thank Hollywood.com for their support. You gave us so much and afforded me so many experiences that most people will never have in their lives. I am forever grateful. Most of all I appreciate the Spill community. Needless to say there would never be a Spill.com without you. You've given us many gifts throughout the years, but the most important gift is that of friendship. You aren't inconspicuous avatars on a webpage, you're friends. You've opened your homes to us across the world. You've helped us organize events to celebrate our successes. Most importantly, you were there when things were not so happy, even if it was just a kind word. Friends like that are hard to come by in everyday life, much less a website. For that reason I can leave this chapter of my life with love and calm in my heart. Thank you. Korey P.S. - WE STILL HAVE A FEW MORE PODCASTS TO DO SO GET BACK TO WORK!
I have six words for all you dear Spillios - IT AIN'T GOIN' DOWN LIKE THAT! You all know know how much I love you. You're my friends - AND I DON'T KICK FRIENDS OUT MY HOUSE!!! @Wetfifty all you need to know is I feel inspired right now.

SPILL FILM REVIEW: PUNK THE CAPITAL: BUILDING A SOUND MOVEMENT

Punk The Capital

PUNK THE CAPITAL: BUILDING A SOUND MOVEMENT

Passion river films, june 29, 2021.

Punk the Capital: Building A Sound Movement , was released on DVD in conjunction with 2021’s Record Store Day in June.  The documentary explores the history of the Washington, DC scene, using photos as well as clips from interviews and live performances from some of the area’s more influential bands as well as other key players.

Flipside Magazine , a punk zine that ran from 1977 to 2000, published a DC Family Tree, in which they credited Bad Brains as the founders of the scene.  The film traces the branches, through interviews of numerous musicians, promoters, radio station personnel, record store owners, club owners, and others who contributed a verse to this powerful play, including HR from Bad Brains, Ian McKaye of Teen Idles, Minor Threat, and Fugazi, Henry Rollins of Black Flag and the Rollins Band; and Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys; just to name a few.  Disenfranchised youth during this period, this group of modern-day punk royalty relates how they used music as a creative outlet to tell their stories in their own words, along the way changing the course of music and countless lives.

spill.com movie reviews

One of the overriding themes that carries through the movie is the sense of community that was present. “I embraced the community, encouraged people to go to each other’s shows and be there,” said Patricia Ragan of The Afrika Korps and “Punk Magazine” early in the movie. “Punk rock at the time (prior to this) had become associated with Sid Vicious, self-destruction, and junkie culture,” according to Ian McKaye (Teen Idles, Minor Threat, Fugazi, DISCHORD Records).  “Some people were driven to this notion that a form of rebellion was in self-destruction, but it’s very clear to me that this is not rebellion, not revolutionary because it doesn’t do anything to the state except get rid of their problem.”  Going along with McKaye’s doctrine is the “P.M.A. (positive mental attitude)” ideology delivered by Bad Brains.  Borrowed from literature they’d read about a philosophy of positive thinking, according to HR, Bad Brains’ vocalist, in an on-camera radio station interview done seated next to McKaye, he summarized the doctrine as “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve,” explaining that the band had been looking for some sort of substance to put into their music.  This attitude gave punk the traction to go forward fast, he reported.   Of Bad Brains, Henry Rollins commented “They reinvented the wheel in front of us.”

spill.com movie reviews

All in all, it was the perfect storm: a bunch of creative, fearless individuals with DIY spirits who were very politically aware (this was, after all, DC), tended to align with the liberal left, and had a passion to work for change, a message to relate, and a desire to rebel; a nation in a state of flux due to the transition from Presidents Carter to Reagan; and an area where individualism is not looked upon especially kindly.  Included are bits about Dischord Records (label of Ian McKaye and Minor Threat drummer Jeff Nelson, the straight edge movement, which was originally going to be the band’s name until they settled on Minor Threat instead, a reference to the notion that you have the edge over someone when you’re sober and a philosophy that encourages taking responsibility and doing things for yourself while abstaining from self-destructive behaviors and substances such as drugs and alcohol), the beginning of hardcore punk circa 1980, local sites and people who were especially supportive such as Skip Groff Yesterday & Today Records, Madams Organ, Dan Zientara, founder and recording engineer of Inner Ear Studio; The Keg (reported to be the first punk club in D.C.),  Slickee Boys, and others to paint a picture of how, where, and why things started.

In keeping with the punk spirit of community, a portion of the proceeds from sales of DVD  and Blu-ray copies of the movie sold through Dischord Records will go to the DC-based charity We Are Family, an organization that reaches out to isolated at-risk inner-city senior citizens to provide free services, advocacy, and companionship.

Spill was a group of animated internet movie critics that were based in Austin, Texas. Their shtick was that they were geeks who review films for geeks and, you know, they were animated!
