Miro: Plans and pricing

Miro is available at a number of different price points to suit organizations of different sizes, but it all starts with a free plan that includes some of the software’s most fundamental features. Users get access to one workspace with three editable boards (think of these like individual projects that you’re working on), with over 1,000 templates. There are also more than 100 third-party integrations with other software that you might be using as an organization, including Zoom and Slack . It’s best thought of as a trial to see whether you can benefit from the full paid packages.

If you choose to upgrade to Starter, you’ll get unlimited boards within your single workspace with plenty of other useful features like version history, collaboration tools including video chats and polling, and more control over who can see and share your work.

Business opens up unlimited workspaces on top of that (with unlimited boards inside each workspace), even more integrations, and support for single sign-on (SSO). Normally, this is reserved for customized enterprise plans, so it’s refreshing to see that businesses looking to apply this type of login method can save a bit of cash.

Starter and Business cost $10 and $20 per user per month respectively, but if you’re willing to commit long-term and pay for a year upfront then you can save 20%.

On the subject of larger organizations, there is an Enterprise version with added admin controls, security, and 24/7 support. As ever, pricing for this is based on a custom quote. Staff and students of educational establishments can also get access to unlimited boards which the company says are “free forever”, which will certainly be welcome news to those in need of collaboration tools.

If you’re looking for a basic tool that covers one of the areas covered by Miro, like presentation or mind mapping, then you may find Miro slightly expensive. However, if you’re able to use all of its features including its online collaboration tools then you’ll likely unlock significant savings versus subscribing to multiple platforms.

Miro features for hybrid working February 2023

Miro: Features

Miro is best described as a multipurpose online collaboration tool, and its list of features is pretty extensive stretching beyond the typical realms of similar software by offering up things like video conferencing .

The majority of the work you’ll end up doing in Miro will revolve around what it calls boards, which start off as entirely blank spaces. Setting one up from scratch can be daunting and time-consuming, which is why the company has designed templates that you can pick from the get-go.

Some of its most commonly accessed templates include mind maps, Kanban boards, flowcharts, product roadmaps, and timelines. Many of these will serve well as project management tools, and anybody familiar with other project management software like Airtable or Trello will already be familiar with how they work.

Given the nature of project management, collaboration is a key driver in how Miro sets up its services, and you can invite team members and colleagues to watch and edit live with you. Even if the software itself is new to you, the collaboration part of it shouldn’t be because it works in the same way that other service, like Google Workspace, do, by highlighting active members and their locations on the boards.

In an effort to cater to the entire process, Miro extended its project management tools to cater for presentations, too. It can take a lot of time and effort to carefully curate the content of a board, so rather than have to create a new presentation, users can take that extra second or two when designing the board to place content in the right areas (known as frames). When a user chooses to enter the presentation view, they will be guided through each frame as if it were a slide in a presentation. Of course, with access to unlimited boards, certain members can create setups that are specifically designed to be presentations from the get-go, eliminating the need to invest in other software like Prezi.

When the going gets tough, certain paying users will be able to tap into the video conferencing-like capabilities that Miro has to offer, including screen sharing which can be handy for inter-team collaboration where one worker may know more about a specific area than another. If your company already invests in a third-party video conferencing platform, like Zoom, it can choose to connect this instead.

Miro Mac app February 2023

Miro: Interface and in use

Miro is really designed to be used anywhere, and while many will opt to use the browser version, there are Windows and Mac desktop clients, and iOS and Android apps. In fact, support is pretty impressive with optimized apps for Intel and Apple silicon Macs, 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows, and even interactive displays.

Upon creating an account, and optionally paying for a higher tier of membership, you’ll be greeted with a few startup tips and an option to add colleagues straight away. From here, you can then pick from one of the many templates, each of which illustrated with clear depictions of how the template would look.

Once you’ve reached the point that you’ve got a number of boards, you’ll be able to filter them by owner and sort through them alphabetically or by date. It’s important to note that, despite Miro’s extensive catalog of third-party integrations, storage is handled in-house. It doesn’t quite live up to what dedicated cloud storage drives are capable of and we felt it was lacking in the ability to organize with folders.

Where Miro loses out against more traditional rivals like PowerPoint is that it requires an active Internet connection. While this is unlikely to present a challenge to many working environments, anybody looking to use the software when traveling may be disappointed.

Once you’re inside a board, there are three key areas around the periphery of significance. In the upper left-hand corner are some settings for the board, including options for saving and exporting.

The left-hand side houses all the editing tools that you would usually find along the top in more traditional offerings, including text boxes, shapes, frames, and so on. This is where you’ll spend most of your time when designing a board.

The top-right is home to some of the online collaboration tools, like voting, chat, and video calling.

Miro help center February 2023

Miro: Support

Every customer (or prospective customer) has access to the site’s Help Center which is designed to aid with some common troubleshooting, and it’s clear that it’s been designed with ease of use in mind.

However, there will be times where a more personalized or customized response will be required. Free plans get no such thing, but paying users can use the email support channel. Enterprise customers can also opt for an onboarding session and 24/7 support for critical issues.

Overall, support for the Miro platform is pretty average, and other companies have it beaten with telephone and live chat channels. While efficient email communication can eliminate the need for live chat, sometimes it’s nice to be able to speak to a person on the phone in real time as they walk you through your problem.

Miro security February 2023

Miro: Security

When a company fails to disclose information on its security practices, it raises red flags. Fortunately, Miro has several pages dedicated to explaining how it handles its customers’ data, instilling confidence in users who need to remain compliant with strict regulations.

Data is stored under encrypted conditions, for example, and remains compliant with GDPR and CCPA standards. The same applies to free and paid versions of the software, however Enterprise versions get access to more advanced features that can relate to industry-specific rules.

The company also discusses its choice of cloud hosting partner, AWS, which it uses in the US and EU. It stresses that no data is stored in Russia, Belarus, or Ukraine, and that it has wound down operations in Russia.

The competition

Miro has plenty of competition, however none of it quite covers as much ground as Miro does. If you’re looking for project management software, something like Airtable would cost about the same but lacks any form of presentation or video conferencing abilities.

If you need interactive and quirky presentations, you may be able to get Prezi slightly cheaper but you won’t get access to any of the project collaboration tools that you get with Miro.

Then, there’s the real-time collaboration with video calling and screen sharing directly from within the app, which is a great idea that is rarely implemented. Pitch does a really neat job of integrating live video call feed straight into the interface for an affordable price, but its attention is purely focused on building presentations.

Final verdict

Overall, we think Miro is hard to beat. Its long list of features should cover all parts of a typical business process from research and design to presentation, and its collaboration abilities are second to none. Furthermore, its transparency around security and reasonable pricing make it hard for us not to recommend it. The only thing we could wish for is better support channels.

Business Plan or Consulting Plan?

  • 3 years ago 18 August 2020
  • Adam Kleinberg

I’m trying to figure out the best way to create collaboration with clients over an extended period, so Day Passes don’t sound like they are going to cut it. I’m currently on a Business Plan. Does this work or should I be on the Consultant Plan (I’ve got about fifteen employees and contractors currently using it)? Do I need to make the clients team members? I only want them to have access to one board. How do people manage this?

@Adam Kleinberg  If your clients will not require all of the same features that you have on a paid plan, then the Guest Editor feature should suffice.

You can read more about this here:  https://help.miro.com/hc/en-us/articles/360012524559-Collaboration-with-Anonymous-Guest-Editors

From the above link, here’s what Guest Editors can’t do:

  • Change board name
  • Create, duplicate or delete a board
  • Change board privacy settings
  • Access team dashboard
  • Access any boards except for the board(s) shared with them via a public link
  • Mention others in comments
  • Start video chat
  • Create, edit or add Asana, Jira, Microsoft Azure, or Rally cards from cards picker (however, they will be able to view them)
  • Export and embed the board
  • Download board backup
  • Lock/unlock  objects on the board
  • Receive any board notifications

A few other things I like to point out when I suggest  the Guest Editor feature:

  • If your client doesn’t already have a Miro account, I suggest that they create an account first. Then, when they access the board from their signed in browser session using the link you send them, you will see their name beside their cursor on your board as they have an account and are signed in.
  • They Star the board - once they are in the board, if they click the Start at the top-left corner beside the board name, when they want to get to it again from their Miro, they can click on the Starred link in the dashboard.

@Adam Kleinberg , the answer from @Rob Johnson  is your best bet.

Here is a link to Loom video highlighting how to share access to a board and give people access without utilizing day passes.

https://www.loom.com/share/f1d03386ad7f41e9b5b6915dc539fd27

Is there security around anonymous public boards? Can I make it password protected for confidentiality?

I had added this to my original reply:

As per this comment from the Miro Online Community Manager, it is currently being rolled out to all paid plans.

It's official: Amazon to build $11 billion data center near South Bend

miro new business plan

NEW CARLISLE ― Gov. Eric J. Holcomb announced Thursday morning that Amazon Web Services plans to invest $11 billion to build a data center campus just west of New Carlisle, creating at least 1,000 new jobs.

The planned investment marks the largest capital investment announcement in Indiana’s history and ends months of speculation about the company behind the secretive Razor5 project, which The Tribune reported in January was AWS .

“Indiana’s long-term economic strategy is paying dividends for Hoosiers as we cultivate the growth of critical sectors like technology infrastructure,” Holcomb said in a release. “Amazon has long been an important economic partner in Indiana, and we are excited to welcome AWS."

The governor added that the investment solidifies Indiana's leadership position in the economy of the future and will have a positive ripple effect on New Carlisle, the north central region and the state for years to come. Besides AWS, Google plans to build a massive data center in Fort Wayne and another will be built by Meta in Jeffersonville, among others.

The old St. Joe Farm east of Capital Avenue is also being eyed for possible use as another massive data center by a different company. The progress of that development, however, is contingent on switching the zoning from agricultural and planned unit development to industrial. St. Joseph County’s Area Plan Commission voted to give the rezoning a favorable recommendation on April 16. The St. Joseph County Council will now vote on the proposal at it 6 p.m. May 14 meeting.

According to the governor's office, AWS data centers enable customers of all sizes and across all industries ― such as automotive, healthcare, manufacturing, financial services, public sector and more — to transform their businesses.

Millions of customers — including the fastest-growing startups, largest enterprises and leading government agencies — are using AWS to lower costs, become more agile and innovate faster. The new data centers will contain computer servers, data storage drives, networking equipment and other forms of technology infrastructure used to power cloud computing capabilities and generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

Bill Schalliol, executive director of economic development for St. Joseph County, said AWS plans to have four 216,000-square-foot buildings completed north of the GM/Samsung EV battery site before the end of the year. The company expects to close on a separate piece of property south of Indiana 2 in the next couple of weeks.

In all, the company could create 400 permanent positions with the first project north of GM/Samsung, but officials anticipate there could be at least 600 more working for businesses that contract with AWS. Even with incentives packages, AWS still will be adding millions of dollars in tax revenue when it begins operations, Schalliol added.

“The whole community should be thrilled that one of the largest companies in the world realizes what Indiana and St. Joseph County has to offer," said Jeff Rea, president and CEO of the South Bend Regional Chamber of Commerce. "When that happens, it puts us on radar screens that we wouldn't be otherwise."

Roger Wehner, AWS director of economic development, said that the investment here and across the United States demonstrates the company's "unwavering commitment to supporting our customers and helping drive digital transformation."

"Building upon this, we are thrilled to be expanding our operations in Indiana through this planned $11 billion investment, which will create numerous well-paying job opportunities and tap into the state's burgeoning tech sector, while contributing significantly to the state's growing economy," Wehner said in the release from the governor's office.

"This investment will include our continuing commitment to fostering workforce development and educational initiatives in areas where we operate, and we look forward to helping nurture the next generation of talent in the Hoosier State," he added.

Officials said Indiana is an ideal place for such facilities because of its business-friendly environment, abundance of infrastructure resources, availability of skilled labor, and growing technology and semiconductor sectors. Local officials have touted having shovel ready land that's ready for development as well as water and electricity as key factors.

“The AWS announcement today will be a generational boost to our local and regional economy, and we are excited for the opportunity to welcome the AWS team and workforce into our community,” said Carl Baxmeyer, president of the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners.

“This new data center campus to be built in the Indiana Enterprise Center (IEC) over the next decade will be a major employment center for all of northern Indiana," Baxmeyer added. "This project announcement also shows our alignment with the state’s goal to create next level jobs that benefit all Hoosiers.”

Based on the company’s significant capital investment plans, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) committed an investment in AWS in the form of data center sales tax exemptions for eligible capital investments over a 50-year term.

The IEDC also committed an investment of up to $18.3 million in the form of headcount-based tax credits, up to $5 million in training grants, up to $55 million in Hoosier Business Investment tax credits, and up to $20 million in redevelopment tax credits.

In addition to its community investment and engagement activities, AWS will also contribute up to $7 million to support road infrastructure improvements being conducted by the state and local community along Indiana 2 surrounding the company’s planned development.

NEW CARLISLE, Ind. (AP) — Amazon ’s cloud computing unit Amazon Web Services plans to invest $11 billion to build a data center in northern Indiana that will create at least 1,000 new jobs, state and company officials announced Thursday.

Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb called the project planned near the town of New Carlisle, about 15 miles (24 kilometers) west of South Bend, “the largest capital investment announcement in Indiana’s history.”

“This significant investment solidifies Indiana’s leadership position in the economy of the future, and will undoubtedly have a positive ripple effect on the town of New Carlisle, the north central region and the state of Indiana for years to come,” Holcomb said in a news release.

The announcement from Holcomb’s office and AWS did not include a timeline for the data center campus in northern Indiana’s St. Joseph County, which abuts the Michigan state line.

But Carl Baxmeyer, president of the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners, said in the news release that it would be built “over the next decade” at the Indiana Enterprise Center, located just east of New Carlisle, and “will be a major employment center for all of northern Indiana.”

The AWS data center would contain computer servers, data storage drives, networking equipment, “and other forms of technology infrastructure used to power cloud computing capabilities, and generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies,” according to the news release.

Roger Wehner, AWS director of economic development, said the Indiana data center “will create numerous well-paying job opportunities and tap into the state’s burgeoning tech sector, while contributing significantly to the state’s growing economy.”

Based on the company ‘s planned investment, the Indiana Economic Development Corp. has committed to providing data center sales tax exemptions “for eligible capital investments over a 50-year term,” the release states.

The IEDC has also committed to a variety of performance-based tax credits to support the AWS data center plans, including up to $18.3 million in headcount-based tax credits, up to $55 million in Hoosier Business Investment tax credits, and up to $20 million in redevelopment tax credits, the release states.

AWS will provide up to $7 million to support road infrastructure improvements along State Road 2, surrounding the company’s planned data center, according to the release.

UBS managing director Jason Katz and Interactive Brokers strategist Steve Sosnick reveal how investors can navigate conflicting messages in the stock market on 'The Claman Countdown.'

Oracle founder Larry Ellison announced Tuesday that he plans to move the software giant’s corporate headquarters to Nashville, Tennessee, which he added is at the center of the healthcare industry.

Ellison sat down with former Senate majority leader Bill Frist for an onstage conversation in Nashville , which was shared by Oracle Health on the social media platform LinkedIn on Tuesday.

The founder and executive chairman told Frist his company was moving its "huge campus" to Nashville, and it will "ultimately be our world headquarters."

"I shouldn’t have said that," Ellison quickly said, but there was no turning back because he disclosed information on his company’s future.

Ellison said Oracle’s move to Nashville will position his company as one of the major players in the healthcare industry, an industry Oracle is looking to expand its position in.

Back in 2022, Oracle acquired Cerner for $28 billion. The Kansas City, Missouri-based company provides software for managing electronic health records.

As Ellison elaborated on the company’s plans to move, he said Nashville is "a fabulous place to live."

"It’s a great place to raise a family. It’s got a unique and vibrant culture. And as we surveyed our employees, large numbers of employees, Nashville ticked all the boxes," Ellison said.

He also said Nashville is "the center of the industry we’re most concerned about, which is the healthcare industry ."

Norman Foster, who designed Apple Park in Cupertino, California, is designing the new Oracle campus in Nashville, which will be "right on the river."

The CEO said the new campus will not look anything like a corporate campus, but instead it will be a park with buildings on it.

Ellison said the news site will have office buildings, a community clinic, restaurants, hotels and a concert venue — a floating stage on the lake for concerts to be held for the community.

"We want to be part of the community," he said. "Our people love it here. And we think it’s the center of our future."
