These councils address student issues that affect their everyday lives and pave the way for development across a number of spheres during their study course.

Turkey has several tourist sites and destinations to which students can gladly visit and have fun.

Students often can easily secure part-time jobs all year in hotels, casinos, bars, markets, or arms and hence are able to supplement their funds and help meet their day-to-day needs.

Students also enjoy a diversity of extracurricular activities to keep their minds off school and socialize, meet, and make new friends that include sporting facilities and clubs found both on campus and in the community centers.

Among the everyday activities include gymnasiums, basketball, tennis, swimming, soccer, art and culture club, and dance club.

Most urban cities have several amenities and services catered for university students with affordable restaurants and eat-out spots or those looking for a quick bite, game center bowling, PlayStation, skiing, etc., and cinema halls constantly update blockbusters and in 3D.

The accommodation needs of students in Turkey are met by the universities’ dormitory or state dormitories.

State dormitories are one of the most preferred accommodation options. YURT-KUR (Higher Education Credits and Dormitories Institution) is the leading choice of those accommodation options.

Preferably, luxurious dormitories or dormitories with many activity areas (swimming pool, gym, etc.) are also among all these options.

Besides all those options mentioned above, luxurious residences or small flats in apartments could be preferred by students by sharing or personally used. Renting a house in Turkey could be done via the Internet or organized by real estate companies.

As an advice for international students, dormitories are suggested since dormitories could be more beneficial for practicing practice in Turkish language.

The discount rate varies from city to city. Please apply to websites and IETT offices in many central places in Istanbul for detailed information about those discounts.

Turkey Student Visa

If you're considering studying in Turkey, you'll need to obtain a student visa to enter the country legally. The Turkish student visa allows international students to stay in Turkey for the duration of their studies, and it is a requirement for non-Turkish citizens studying in the country. In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps of applying for a Turkey student visa.

Turkey is a country that has become increasingly popular as a destination for international students seeking higher education. With its rich culture, history, and scenic beauty, Turkey is an attractive option for students looking to expand their academic horizons. In this article, we will explore the requirements and application process for obtaining a student visa to Turkey.

A student visa is a type of visa that allows an individual to reside in a foreign country for the purpose of pursuing their education. The visa is usually valid for the duration of the individual's academic program and can be extended as necessary. In Turkey, the process for obtaining a student visa is relatively straightforward, but there are a few requirements that applicants must meet.

The first requirement for obtaining a student visa in Turkey is acceptance to a Turkish educational institution. Before applying for a visa, applicants must have an acceptance letter from a recognized educational institution in Turkey. The acceptance letter should be presented to the Turkish consulate or embassy in the applicant's home country.

In addition to an acceptance letter, applicants must also provide evidence of their ability to support themselves financially while in Turkey. This can be in the form of a bank statement, scholarship letter, or proof of financial aid. Applicants must also demonstrate that they have enough money to cover the cost of their tuition and living expenses for the duration of their program.

Once all of the necessary documents have been gathered, the applicant can begin the application process for a student visa. The application can be completed online or in person at the Turkish consulate or embassy in the applicant's home country. The application will require the applicant to provide personal information, such as their name, date of birth, and passport number, as well as details about their academic program and financial situation.

After the application has been submitted, the applicant will be required to attend an interview at the consulate or embassy. During the interview, the applicant will be asked questions about their program of study, their reasons for studying in Turkey, and their financial situation. The interviewer will also review the applicant's documents to ensure that they meet all of the requirements for a student visa.

If the application is approved, the applicant will be issued a student visa that is valid for the duration of their academic program. The visa will also allow the applicant to work part-time while studying in Turkey, which can help to offset the cost of living expenses.

Obtaining a student visa for Turkey requires a few key documents and a straightforward application process. By meeting the requirements and providing the necessary documentation, international students can pursue their academic goals in a beautiful and culturally rich country. With the ability to work part-time and experience all that Turkey has to offer, studying in Turkey is an excellent opportunity for students looking to broaden their horizons.

Eligibility Requirements for a Turkey Student Visa

To be eligible for a Turkey student visa, you must first have been accepted to a Turkish educational institution. This means you'll need to apply to and be accepted by a university, college, or language school in Turkey before you can apply for a student visa. Additionally, you'll need to show that you have sufficient financial means to support yourself during your stay in Turkey, as well as a valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity.

The eligibility requirements for a Turkey student visa are an essential aspect of the application process. International students who are interested in studying in Turkey must meet certain criteria to be considered eligible for a student visa. Here are some of the primary eligibility requirements for a Turkey student visa:

  • Acceptance to a Turkish educational institution: International students must first obtain admission to a recognized Turkish educational institution to be eligible for a student visa. This could be a university, college, or vocational school. The admission process usually involves submitting an application and meeting certain academic requirements.
  • Proof of financial support: International students must demonstrate that they have sufficient financial resources to cover the cost of their tuition, living expenses, and other associated costs. This can be in the form of bank statements, scholarship letters, or proof of financial aid.
  • Health certificate: International students must provide a health certificate that proves they are in good health and free from any contagious diseases.
  • Travel documents: International students must have a valid passport that is not set to expire for at least six months from the date of their intended departure. They may also need to provide additional travel documents, such as a return ticket.
  • Criminal background check: International students may be required to provide a criminal background check from their home country to prove they do not have a criminal record.
  • Language proficiency: Depending on the educational institution and program of study, international students may be required to demonstrate a certain level of proficiency in the Turkish language or in another language if the program is taught in a language other than Turkish.

Meeting these eligibility requirements is critical to obtaining a Turkey student visa. Applicants must provide accurate and complete information to avoid delays or rejections. By preparing ahead of time and ensuring they meet all of the eligibility requirements, international students can maximize their chances of success in the Turkey student visa application process.

The Importance of Acceptance to a Turkish Educational Institution

Obtaining acceptance to a Turkish educational institution is a crucial step in the process of applying for a student visa to Turkey. The Turkish government requires that international students have proof of acceptance to a recognized educational institution in Turkey before they can apply for a student visa. Here are some reasons why acceptance to a Turkish educational institution is so important for a student visa application:

  • Eligibility: As mentioned earlier, acceptance to a Turkish educational institution is a key eligibility requirement for a student visa to Turkey. Without an acceptance letter, international students cannot apply for a student visa. Thus, obtaining an acceptance letter is the first step in the application process.
  • Visa Approval: The Turkish government considers the acceptance letter from a recognized Turkish educational institution as an important factor in granting student visas. The acceptance letter confirms that the student has been accepted into a program of study and that the program is legitimate. This gives the Turkish government confidence that the student is entering the country for educational purposes and not for any other reasons.
  • Academic Success: An acceptance letter from a reputable Turkish educational institution also serves as an assurance that the student is serious about their education and has been accepted based on their academic achievements. International students who have been accepted into reputable institutions in Turkey are more likely to succeed academically, which is beneficial for both the student and the educational institution.
  • Program of Study: The acceptance letter specifies the program of study that the student has been accepted into. This is important because the student visa is only valid for the duration of the program of study specified in the acceptance letter. Students who do not have an acceptance letter for a program of study will not be eligible for a student visa.

Obtaining an acceptance letter from a recognized Turkish educational institution is crucial to the success of a student visa application. It is a key eligibility requirement, an important factor in visa approval, and serves as an assurance of academic success and the legitimacy of the program of study. By obtaining acceptance to a reputable Turkish educational institution, international students can maximize their chances of obtaining a student visa to study in Turkey.

Financial Considerations for a Turkey Student Visa

Financial considerations are an important aspect of the Turkey student visa application process. International students who plan to study in Turkey must demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to cover the cost of their tuition, living expenses, and other associated costs. Here are some financial considerations that international students should keep in mind when applying for a Turkey student visa:

  • Tuition Fees: International students must pay tuition fees to the educational institution they will attend. The cost of tuition varies depending on the program of study and the educational institution. Students should research the tuition fees for their chosen program of study before applying for a student visa.
  • Living Expenses: International students must also consider the cost of living in Turkey. This includes accommodation, food, transportation, and other daily expenses. Students should research the cost of living in the city or region where their educational institution is located to estimate their monthly living expenses.
  • Financial Aid: International students may be eligible for financial aid or scholarships from the educational institution they will attend or from their home country. Students should research the available financial aid options and scholarships for international students.
  • Bank Statements: International students must provide bank statements to prove they have sufficient funds to cover the cost of tuition and living expenses. The amount of funds required varies depending on the educational institution and the program of study. Students should ensure that they have enough funds to cover their expenses for the duration of their program of study.
  • Part-time Work: International students may be allowed to work part-time in Turkey while studying. Students should research the rules and regulations governing part-time work for international students and the amount of income they can earn.
  • Exchange Rate: International students should consider the exchange rate between their home currency and the Turkish Lira when estimating their expenses. Students should factor in potential fluctuations in the exchange rate and account for any additional expenses, such as bank fees or conversion fees.

Overall, financial considerations are an essential aspect of the Turkey student visa application process. International students should carefully consider their financial situation and ensure that they have sufficient funds to cover the cost of tuition, living expenses, and other associated costs. By demonstrating financial stability, international students can increase their chances of obtaining a Turkey student visa.

The only students exempt from this visa requirement are:

  • Students whose parents live in Turkey with a work visa and residence permit
  • Blue Cardholders
  • International students who want to pursue a bachelor's or master's degree in Turkey after completing their secondary or higher education in Turkey

Types of Study Visas in Turkey

Internship (e.g., Erasmus and AISEC), course, exchange program, and in-service training visas are usually issued for up to 90 days. There are also visas for Turkish language courses (up to 11 months) or general student visas for university degrees (more than 6 months).

Note: There will be a distinction between visas for studying in Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

When applying for a residence permit, your passport must be valid for at least 60 days longer than the period you are using for.

After you complete your online application, you will receive an appointment date for your visa interview.

If you want to work, study, or conduct academic or scientific research in Turkey, you will have to obtain a visa for that specific purpose at the Turkish Embassy or consulate in your country before you arrive in Turkey.

What to Do after You Arrive in Turkey

You cannot obtain a student visa after you arrive. To stay in Turkey beyond the 90-day limit, you will need to apply for a residence permit at the Provincial Directorate of Migration Administration in the city your academic program is in.

After you have arrived in Turkey, you should apply for your residence permit within 30 days.

The documents you will need:

  • Passport and student visa
  • Residence permit application form
  • Tax ID (obtained from the tax office)
  • Four passport-sized photos
  • Passport and photocopies of pages with your name, visa, and last entry date stamps
  • Student enrolment certificate (öğrenci belgesi)

  • Proof of accommodation (Dorm or flat rental contract, letter of invitation if staying with family, etc.)

Mandatory Registering with the Authorities

Upon your arrival in Turkey, you need to register at the nearest local police department in your city as soon as possible. It is a requirement whether you are on a student or worker visa.

You will then apply for a residence permit, aka ikamet, at the Provincial Directorate of Migration Administration in the city you're located in.

Right to a Residence in Turkey as a Student

Foreign nationals who will stay longer than the visa exemption period or 90 days have to obtain a residence permit. The same goes for students. If you enrolled in an academic program in Turkey for 3 months or longer, you would have to apply for a student residence permit, which gives you the right to stay in Turkey during your study period.

Having a student visa or student residence permit does not grant your parents, spouse, or kids residency.

Rules for Working on a Study Visa in Turkey

You cannot work in Turkey on a student visa if enrolled in a bachelor's degree program (lisans - 4 years) or associate degree (ön lisans - 2 years). However, if you are over 18 and are a master's or doctorate student, you can work while pursuing your degree.

If you came to Turkey on a student exchange program and have an internship as part of it, you do not need to obtain a work permit. Whether paid or unpaid, you only need a residence permit to do the internship.

However, suppose you came to Turkey as a student and did an optional internship to gain professional experience or sustain yourself financially. In that case, you will have to get a work permit.

Student visa to turkey

As you know, Turkey is one of the most beautiful and advanced countries in the Middle East, which ranks 146th in the world in terms of scientific rank and educational quality. Every year, students from different countries travel to this country to receive student visa to turkey and continue their studies. The Turkish government has provided a perfect opportunity for these people to continue their higher education in Turkey through scholarships or study stays.

Obtaining a student visa in turkey is a relatively easy task. Still, due to the changes that the government of this country has made in its immigration laws since the beginning of 2022, the study residence rules of Turkey have also undergone minor changes; let’s talk about them in detail.

What is a student visa in turkey?

A student visa for turkey is an official permit to enter Turkey to continue education at the country’s universities. Student residence allows international students to study in Turkey by applying for a temporary residence permit. You cannot seek employment or start your own business with a student visa, nor can you use this visa for tourism because Turkish study visas are only granted to people who intend to intern in this country. Or enroll in an educational institution, school, college or university and continue their education.

The primary condition for applying for a student visa to turkey is to register and be officially accepted as an international student in one of the Turkish universities. Students who intend to continue their studies and stay as students in Turkey must obtain a Turkish student visa from the nearest consulate of the Republic of Turkey in their country. Getting a Turkish student visa takes about two months, and you should apply for a Turkish student visa as soon as you receive the acceptance letter from your desired university. For more information, we suggest you read the article on admission procedures in Turkish universities.

Benefits of Turkish student residence card

You can do all official transactions with the Turkish Student Residence Card and the Foreign Identification Number (YU) you receive after your application. If your residence card has not expired, you can use it when entering or leaving Turkey, so there is no need to get a new visa.

It is essential to renew your Turkish student residence permit before the validity period ends. As an international student, you are exempt from paying student visa turkey cost, and you only have to pay for your residence card, which is around 120 TL.

After completing your studies, you can apply to turkey work visa and obtain a Turkish passport. Your study period in Turkey is considered among the records of your stay in this country, making obtaining Turkish citizenship easier for you.

Who can use a student visa to turkey?

Except for the citizens of the Republic of Northern Cyprus, all students from other countries of the world can benefit from the student and academic residence of this country to travel to Turkey for educational reasons and continue their education in the schools and universities of this country.

Exemption from the student and academic visa law has been established only for the following groups:

  • International students who have already completed their high school education in Turkey and now want to receive their bachelor’s or master’s degree from a Turkish higher education institution.
  • Children of people who live in Turkey with permanent residence and work visas.
  • Foreign nationals who have a residence blue card.

How to apply for a student visa to turkey?

If you want to apply for a student visa to turkey, you must fill out the visa form, collect the required documents and attend the student visa interview. The student residence is issued to applicants according to the course of study and the validity of the passport. But these periods can be extended.

For example, if the duration of the postgraduate course is two years, if the applicant does not graduate, he can renew his student residence. For doctoral studies, student residence is issued without a thesis. The short-term residence is given for short-term training courses (less than one year).

People who receive student residence can apply for residence only for their family members, i.e., spouses and children. If your study period is four years, to be issued a 4-year study residence, you must have paid the tuition for four years, and your passport must be valid for more than four years. In this case, the immigration officer can issue a four-year study residence for you, your spouse and children under 18.

Is a university acceptance letter necessary for a student visa?

One of the most important student visa requirements for turkey and documents you must submit when applying for a visa, is the acceptance letter from the university or institution where you have been accepted. Tourist Visa

*Before all travel, always check the latest requirements regarding COVID-19 prevention and travel guidelines.

Most temporary visitors may enter Turkey either without needing a visa at all or by easily purchasing a “sticker visa” at the point of entry (airport, maritime port, or land border-crossing).

The procedure is simple and straightforward. You hand the clerk your passport and the visa fee in cash, the clerk applies a sticker visa on a page of your passport and you’re already on your way to immigration. The clerk does not look you up in a database, scan your passport or even take your name. The whole process takes less than a minute.

The sticker visa is just a tax levied on tourists.

Please make sure your passport is valid for at least 90 days from the expiration date of your visa period. Otherwise, you may not be allowed to enter Turkey. This means that if you are entitled to a 90-day visa, please be sure that your passport is valid for at least 180 days beyond the date you are planning to arrive in Turkey.

It is also possible to obtain a tourist visa from any Turkish consulate in advance, but this entails considerable time, trouble and extra expenses, in the form of visa processing fees. It is much simpler to simply buy your visa sticker at the border if your nationality does not require you to obtain a formal visa beforehand.

Note that rules seem to change regularly, so see www.e-konsolosluk.net or http://www.mfa.gov.tr/visa-information-for-foreigners.en.mfa and the Turkish Embassy or Consulate in your home country for the latest information about visa requirements.

Do I Need To Translate My Documents Into Turkish For The Visa Application?

Yes, all required documents must be translated into Turkish by a sworn translator and notarized for the visa application.

What If I Change My Course Or Institution?

If you wish to change your course or institution, it is important to note that you may need to apply for a new student visa.

The visa is granted based on the specifics of your course and institution, so any major changes would require a new visa application.

Can I Bring Family Members With Me?

Students who wish to bring their spouse or children to Turkey will need to apply for a dependent visa.

The dependent visa process has its own set of requirements and the application should be made at the same time as the student visa application.

What Are The Health Insurance Requirements?

While studying in Turkey, international students are required to have health insurance coverage. The health insurance should ideally cover medical expenses related to both emergency and non-emergency medical care.

  • Validity: Your health insurance must cover the entire duration of your studies in Turkey. If your course is two years long, your insurance should ideally be valid for those two years, unless you renew it annually.
  • Comprehensive Coverage: The insurance policy should provide comprehensive coverage, including hospitalization, outpatient treatment, emergency services, and potentially even repatriation in case of severe illness or death.
  • Coverage Amount: While there’s no fixed amount universally mandated, it’s essential that the coverage be adequate for potential medical needs. Some universities or institutions might have specific minimum coverage requirements, so always check with them beforehand.
  • Turkish or International: While many students opt for health insurance from their home country with international coverage, it’s also possible to purchase health insurance from Turkish providers once you arrive. If you choose an international policy, ensure that it’s valid in Turkey and that hospitals and doctors in Turkey recognize it.
  • Recognition: Not all health insurance policies are accepted for visa applications. Ensure that your insurance is recognized and accepted by the Turkish consular services.
  • Documentation: You must provide official documentation of your health insurance policy when applying for your visa. This might include the policy details, coverage amounts, and validity dates.
  • Exclusions: Pay attention to any exclusions in your policy. Some insurance policies might exclude specific illnesses or treatments, which can be problematic if you encounter such issues while in Turkey.

Can I Extend My Visa?

Should your study duration extend beyond the validity of your initial student visa, you will need to apply for a renewal or an extension.

It’s important to start this process well in advance of your visa expiry date to avoid any complications.

The process is generally the same as the initial application. You will need to provide evidence that you are still enrolled in your course of study and that you can continue to financially support yourself.

What Happens If My Studies Get Extended Beyond The Validity Of My Visa?

If your study duration extends beyond the validity of your initial student visa, you will need to apply for a renewal or an extension.

Start this process well in advance of your visa expiry date to avoid any complications.
