Hooding Ceremonies for 2023-2024 Ph.D. Graduates

The Graduate School will hold two hooding ceremonies for 2023-2024 Ph.D. graduates at  Duke Chapel  (401 Chapel Drive) on May 11, 2024:

May 11, 10:00-11:30 a.m.

Ph.D. Hooding Ceremony for Graduates in the Humanities and Social Sciences

May 11, 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Ph.D. Hooding Ceremony for Graduates in the Biomedical and Biomedical Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Engineering

2024 Event Information

• Graduates and guests may park in the Bryan Center Garage/PGIV (125 Science Drive) or the Science Drive Garage (3100 Cameron Blvd). The Bryan Center Garage is a four-minute walk from the Chapel, while the Science Drive Garage is a 15-minute walk away.
• Faculty and staff participating in the Ph.D. Hooding Ceremony may park in the Upper or Lower Allen lots, located on West Campus behind the Allen Building.
• Attendees may also park at any other convenient locations on campus. On-campus parking during commencement weekend will be free of charge.
• ADA parking is available in the parking lot immediately in front of the Bryan Center garage. If you have requested specific accommodations, our staff will be in touch with you directly.
• General parking on campus is on a first-come basis, so please allow plenty of time for parking throughout commencement weekend. Carpooling is highly recommended.
• The circle in front of Duke Chapel, on Chapel Drive, will not be accessible on May 7. If you need to drop off guests with mobility impairments, please use the circle off of Science Drive.
• Visit maps.duke.edu  for an interactive campus map.

Electronic tickets will be distributed ahead of the Hooding Ceremony.

• No food or drinks are permitted in Duke Chapel.
• The accessible entrance to the Chapel is located on the north side of the Chapel facing the Divinity School ( map ).
• There are no restrooms in Duke Chapel. The closest (ADA) restrooms are in the Divinity School, which will be clearly marked with directional signs ( map ).

If you are a doctoral degree candidate and you wish to  rent  apparel, complete this form to register for the university-wide commencement ceremony and order academic regalia. R ented apparel must be requested by March 1, 2024.

Procedure for Hooding

Faculty: Join the line next to the first graduate your are hooding.

Graduates should stand on the left and faculty on the right.  

• Graduates should clearly pronounce their names to the Graduate School staff member standing by the front steps so that they can be relayed to the senior associate dean announcing the graduates.  

The hooding faculty will stand at the top of the steps and the graduate will stand on the next step. There will be a piece of tape on the steps to mark where they should stand.

Once a graduate has received their hood, Dean Barbour will greet them with a congratulatory fist bump.  

• Graduates should then return to their seats. Faculty who have finished hooding all their graduates should sit in the North Transept pews (on the opposite side of where they sat at the start of the ceremony).

The hooding ceremonies will be livestreamed for family, friends, and faculty who cannot attend in person. The livestream links will be posted closer to the event date. 

10:00 am Ceremony (Humanities and Social Sciences)

1:30 pm ceremony (biological & biomedical sciences, physical sciences, and engineering).

• ADA parking is available in the parking lot immediately in front of the Bryan Center garage. If you have requested specific accommodations, a member of the planning team in Graduate Student Affairs will be in touch with you directly in early May.
• If you need to drop off guests with mobility impairments, please use the circle off of Science Drive.
• The closest restrooms (in the Divinity School) are ADA-compliant.
• There will be assistive listening devices available at the sound board in the back left of the nave in the Chapel.

Hooding Basics

The hooding ceremony is similar to a graduation in that faculty and students are dressed in  academic attire . During the ceremony, the name of each graduate is called, and the graduate goes on stage with his or her faculty adviser(s). The adviser places the doctoral hood over the head of the graduate, signifying his or her success in completing the graduate program, and the dean of The Graduate School then congratulates the graduate.

Each doctoral candidate is asked to invite a Duke faculty member to perform the hooding. The faculty member may be the candidate’s adviser or another faculty member of the candidate’s choice. If a faculty member is not available, the dean will perform the hooding.

Graduation Requirements for Doctoral Students

Graduation process: from defense to hooding.

Step 1: Plan your defense - check with your school or graduate support staff for deadlines and guidelines in planning and scheduling your defense.

Step 2: Apply for graduation in Enroll & Pay .

Step 3: Complete your defense.

Step 4: Submit required paperwork to your school (See information below for details).

Step 5: Complete the Electronic Submission of your dissertation.

Step 6: Plan and apply to participate in recognition events and commencement (optional).

Doctoral Hooding Ceremony (DHC)

• This ceremony is exclusively for doctoral graduates and candidates, as they hold the highest level of academic achievement.
• The ceremony takes place once a year in May and doctoral graduates from the previous Summer and Fall terms, as well as doctoral candidates for the current Spring and Summer terms are eligible to participate.
• Communications regarding the DHC application process are sent out via email to all eligible doctoral graduates and candidates.

University Commencement

• Commencement is organized by the Chancellor's office to recognize all the KU graduates for the corresponding year.

Required Paperwork

In order to graduate, a student must submit several documents in addition to the dissertation. Individual schools and the College maintain their own graduation requirements, so they may expect documentation beyond what is listed here. Students must submit all paperwork directly to the graduate administrators in their school or College.  Students must check with their administrators to ensure they meet all requirements and deadlines for graduation. Students should also review the university-wide  graduate calendar  and take note of applicable deadlines and events.

• KU requires completion of the Doctoral Completion Survey and the Survey of Earned Doctorates.
• You  are not  required to submit any documentation that reveals your answers, which are anonymous. However, the Survey of Earned Doctorates issues a certificate of completion which you should include when you submit your graduation paperwork.

• Complete and submit the Dissertation Defense Information Form 
• Your defense should be held at least 2 weeks prior to the final certification deadline
• Your dissertation title must be finalized at this point

Dissertation Defense Information Form Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) Information:  All of the information you need regarding ETD formatting and submitting can be found on the ETD Website .

• You are required to attend a training session regarding the formatting of your ETD.
• You can register for an ETD Workshop at The ETD Training Website
• The information provided at this training is imperative to the successful submission of your ETD. An incorrectly formatted ETD could prevent you from graduating .
• Students most often experience difficulty with bookmarking the ETD. It is important to bookmark every page of your ETD beginning with the title page. Refer to the instructions section of the ETD website above.
• If you are experiencing difficulty, ETD Support offers Walk-In help (Microforms/Maps Area on the Ground Floor of Hillman Library)

Preferred Name on Diploma:  Students may request to have a preferred name printed on their diploma ("Diploma Name"). In order to request a preferred name on your diploma, you must complete and submit the Diploma Name Request Form to the Office of the University Registrar in G-3 Thackeray Hall.

There are three forms which require original signatures of all members on your dissertation committee; your Program Coordinator will work with you to get these forms completed and signed in DocuSign:

• Dissertation Defense Report,
• Dissertation Approval Report, and
• ETD Approval Form.

• Receipt for Processing Fee

The processing fee for a PhD degree is $50. You can pay this at the Student Payment Center in G7 Thackeray Hall. The Student Payment Center only accepts cash, check or money order. If you prefer to pay by credit card (Visa not accepted), you can call the Student Payment Center (412-624-7520), ask them to charge you the $50 processing fee and pay via PittPAY.

• Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED)

There is no longer a hard copy form. To access the electronic SED, go to The SED Website -For School/College, the only option of "Graduate School" is correct. -After completing the registration page, you will receive an email with the URL to the actual SED, a unique PIN and password. -You will be able to save and complete later by using the PIN and password given to you in the email. -Once you have submitted the SED, immediately following the email confirmation page, you will be taken to a certificate of SED completion. You must print and submit this certificate with your other materials by the final certification deadline (listed above (b)).

• AAUDE Doctoral Exit Survey

Effective for doctoral students who are graduating in the Fall 2021 and beyond, graduates are required to complete the Association of American Universities Data Exchange (AAUDE) Doctoral Exit Survey . The survey should take approximately 15 minutes to complete and will collect satisfaction information about your graduate education experience at Pitt and your post‐Pitt plans.

• ProQuest UMI Dissertation Publishing Agreement

- The library will ensure that your dissertation is copyrighted to you by default. -If material copyrighted by others is included in your dissertation, attach three copies of the copyright permission letter(s) from the copyright owner(s). Such letter(s) should state that UMI may supply copies on demand. -If your dissertation contains executable software owned by another party, attach three copies of a letter from the owner of the software license granting permission to use it. Such letter(s) should state that UMI may supply copies on demand. - Any additional services that students wish to purchase from ProQuest will be done directly with ProQuest. If you elect to purchase bound copies of your dissertation, you should not expect to receive it sooner than 3-6 months after the final certification date (listed above).

PhD Graduation Information

The following information and deadlines apply to students who anticipate receiving their PhD degrees at one of the following graduation cycles. Departments/programs may impose additional deadlines.

We only guarantee that we’ll make students official before their graduation date. We cannot rush any graduation procedures for any individual student. Please be patient, and know that you’ll be made official before your graduation date.

Students looking towards their defense should have completed their degree requirements as outlined in the Boston University Bulletin, including the Dissertation Prospectus.

When finishing a degree, students must be registered in the semester in which the final degree requirements are completed; PhD students must also be registered in the preceding semester.

The Dissertation Prospectus Approval Page should be delivered to GRS as soon as it is approved, but no later than 6 months before your dissertation defense.

Dissertation Prospectus

After completing all specific degree requirements as outlined in the University Bulletin, including coursework, language requirements, and qualifying examinations, a student must propose a dissertation topic and will work with their program to identify a first, second, and in some programs third, readers for their final oral examination.

The dissertation prospectus, generally a formal paper not exceeding 20 double-spaced (or 10 single-spaced) pages of 12-point font, should be completed before the more extensive phase of dissertation research is undertaken. The readers, the Director of Graduate Studies, and the Chair or Program Director must approve the final draft. Once approved, the program should submit the  Dissertation Prospectus Approval Page to the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences Office.

Intent to Graduate

In the semester prior to your intended graduation cycle you must submit the Intent to Graduate Form . This form is forwarded to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and you will receive a confirmation email once it has been processed. You will receive further communication regarding your diploma name and mailing address directly from the Registrar’s office.

Final Oral Exam and Dissertation Draft

Students undergo final oral examinations in which they defend their dissertations as valuable contributions to knowledge in their fields and demonstrate a mastery of their fields of specialization in relation to their dissertations.

Scheduling Defense

As of Spring 2023, GRS is no longer involved in the defense scheduling process. GRS does not need to approve your abstract prior to your defense, and we no longer require any defense scheduling paperwork.

Students should notify their program administrator that they’re defending their dissertation at least three weeks before the defense will be held. The program administrator will assist the student with finding a room to hold the defense, and send a report of examination form to the defense committee to complete after the defense has been held.

The completed report of examination form should then be sent to [email protected] so that GRS can record the successful dissertation defense on the student’s record.

Committee Composition The final oral examination committee must be composed of a total of four or more members, including at least a first and second reader and at least two additional committee members who serve as either designated readers or additional committee members. Each committee also must designate a chair who can serve either as one of the four committee members (although the first reader cannot serve in the role of the committee chair), as an additional committee member, or solely as the chair of the committee.

All committee members are required to attend the final oral examination. Up to one committee member, who is not the chair of the committee or the first reader, can attend via audio/video communication without a proxy during the final oral examination. A proxy must be in attendance for any additional committee members who attend via audio/visual communication.

A designated reader is defined as those committee members who sign the final dissertation approval page; all committee members are expected to read the dissertation prior to the final oral examination even if not appointed as a designated reader. At least two of the committee members must be from the student’s department or graduate program. if, by special arrangement with the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, the committee’s first reader is not from the student’s department or program, then at least the chair and the second reader of the committee must be from the student’s department or graduate program. A majority of the committee must be Boston University faculty members who do not require a special appointment. The department chair/program director or the director of graduate studies must approve the membership of the committee.

A special service appointment approved by the Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, is required for those committee members who are: visiting, adjunct, and *emeritus faculty; Boston University employees not of professorial rank; and examiners from outside Boston University.

*Emeritus faculty members may serve as readers of GRS dissertations or on examination committees within two years of their retirement date without a special service appointment.

Dissertation Formatting The Mugar Library stipulates that all dissertations submitted at Boston University must have consistent formatting. They have created a Dissertation Formatting Guide that outlines these requirements. Additionally, they have created Samples of Preliminary Pages , which will help to show these requirements in practice.

The library’s website also includes other useful resources such as instructional videos and templates. For further questions or field specific requirements we suggest reviewing recently submitted dissertations by peers as approved examples of the formatting requirements.

At least three weeks before your defense you must submit a draft of your dissertation as a .pdf to [email protected] for a format review. Please follow all formatting requirements stated in the library guide while preparing your dissertation draft, and include all required elements such as the preliminary pages, references, and your CV. You will be notified if the format is approved or if any changes are required. It is advised that all formatting issues be resolved before you defend your dissertation. Following your defense, please allow ample time to complete all requirements and content revisions that are required by your committee.

Final Dissertation Submission

Following your final oral examination, when all corrections and revisions required by your committee have been completed, submit your final dissertation electronically through the Electronic Theses & Dissertation (ETD) website .

The submission in the ETD will be reviewed by the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (GRS) Records Office, then forwarded to the Mugar Library ETD Administrator for the final format review. If GRS or Mugar Library notifies you of necessary corrections or changes, those edits must be made immediately. When that review is complete, the dissertation will be submitted to ProQuest/UMI.

Embargoing your Dissertation Electronic submissions of PhD dissertations, and their subsequent availability online has made dissertations readily available to everyone and discoverable using simple online searches. While the granting of a PhD has always involved the open publication of a dissertation, this is now true in practice as well as in theory. There has been discussion in the press of how this change is affecting publication, particularly of scholarly books based on a dissertation, with the result that more PhD candidates are asking for their dissertations to remain unavailable for a period after they graduate. This process is called putting an embargo on the dissertation.

In rare circumstances, a student may not wish for their dissertation to be available from ProQuest or the Digital Common immediately after it is submitted to them. Circulation restrictions (referred to by ProQuest as “embargoes”) are granted only in limited circumstances, but may be allowed by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences if the author plans to sell the work to a publisher, apply for a patent, or if the material covers a sensitive subject that cannot be published safely or appropriately at the time.

In such circumstances, you may request a restriction for any period between six months and two years (ProQuest default options are 6 months, one year, or two years.) GRS students may request an embargo of no more than two years. For any time period, you must submit a letter requesting a restriction. The letter must explain the compelling reason for the restriction, the time limit desired, an address where you can be contacted when the time limit expires, and the signed approval of both you and your major advisor. These signatures must be original and in ink. When submitting your dissertation in ETD you must also indicate that you have requested an embargo on your dissertation.

These letters are reviewed and if appropriate approved by the Associate Dean. The restriction will start from the date on the letter. Your manuscript will not be available until the restriction is released. No one is permitted to look at your work unless they have your express written permission to do so. Requests to read your manuscript will be forwarded to you. It is your responsibility to respond to them.

Additional Requirements In addition to submitting the final dissertation in the ETD, you must complete the PhD Contact Information Form and submit the Library Dissertation Processing Fee. The processing fee is $115 and can be submitted via credit card at the link provided under the Submit Electronically section here: http://library.bu.edu/theses .

You must also submit a copy of your dissertation approval page (the third page of your dissertation) with signatures. You can obtain signatures using DocuSign . DocuSign will send your reader approval page to each reader individually, and then automatically send the completed page to GRS.

When uploading your dissertation to ETD, please include an unsigned copy of the approval page. GRS will upload the signed approval page after our review of your dissertation.

Commencement, Diplomas, and Certificates of Completion

All-University Commencement ceremonies are held once each year in May. Graduates will be contacted directly by the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (GRS) in the spring semester with information on the GRS PhD Hooding Ceremony.

Information on diploma pickup and mailing dates can be found on the Registrar’s website . We encourage you to be sure that your diploma mailing address is up to date on the Student Link to ensure safe receipt of your diploma.

Boston University also offers Certified Electronic Diplomas and Certificates (CeDiploma/CeCertificate) for $11. For more information about CeCredentials and instructions on ordering one, please visit the Registrar’s CeCredential website .

Certificates of Completion are available if you are in need of an official document stating that you have met all degree requirements (including the review of your final dissertation) before the diploma is dispersed. Certificates of Completion can be produced approximately one month prior to the official date of your graduation.

As a PhD student, you have spent spend significant time at the University of Rochester taking courses, completing research in your field, completing milestones and are now ready to complete your degree.

The final requirement in earning a PhD degree is the completion and defense of the doctoral dissertation. Understanding the steps and associated deadlines in the dissertation submission and degree conferral process is necessary to establish a successful plan. Doctoral Qualifying Exam / Admission to Candidacy

All PhD programs must administer a qualifying examination as part of the PhD program requirements. The qualifying examination may be either written or oral or both, at the discretion of the department/program, and must be passed at least six months before the final examination may be taken.

The associate dean of a school certifies that a student has passed the qualifying examinations and is recommended for candidacy.

Planning for the Final Oral Exam / Dissertation Defense

At least six months before you plan to defend your dissertation, you should contact the graduate coordinator of your program for details regarding the submitting the defense. During the months leading up to the anticipated defense, your graduate coordinator will walk you through the process and explain any department specific nuances.

Pay careful attention to the five PhD degree cycle deadlines. In each degree cycle, there is a deadline for the last day to complete your degree requirements.  There are no exceptions to the deadlines. If a deadline is missed, your name cannot be approved by the Council on Graduate Education and presented to the Board of Trustees until the following degree date.

The oral exam/defense/dissertation is approved at multiple levels of the University. Starting with the program, oral exam/defense/dissertation committee, school graduate deans and the University Dean of Graduate Education. You will receive emails a few days before your defense confirming that the approvals for the defense have all been received.

To enable review by the Graduate Education Offices in the Schools and University Graduate Education, online dissertation committee and program director approvals must be completed the following number of working days before the defense:

• SMD and SON: At least 10 working days before the defense
• AS&E, Warner and Simon: At least 15 working days before the defense
• ESM: At least 20 working days before the defense

A minimum of five working days must elapse between the approval of the candidate’s School Dean to advance the record to University Graduate Education and the day of the defense. This time has been included in the schools’ lead times listed above.

Defenses may be held during regular business hours on any University working day with the exceptions listed below. See calendar below for additional non-working days.

Monday, May 27:  The University is closed in observance of Memorial Day. This day cannot be counted as a working day.

Wednesday, June 19: The University is closed in observance of Juneteenth. This day cannot be counted as a working day.

Thursday, July 4: The University is closed in observance of Independence Day. This day cannot be counted as a working day.

Friday, August 23, 4 p.m.: Last day to submit final corrected dissertation to the ProQuest website to fulfill degree requirements for an August 2024 degree conferral.

Monday, August 26: Fall semester begins.

Saturday, August 31: August 2024 PhD date.

Wednesday, August 28, 4 p.m.: Last day for students who have completed defenses to submit final corrected dissertation for October 2024 degree to the ProQuest website without having to register for Fall 2024. AFTER THIS DATE, SUBMISSION OF DOCUMENTS FOR DEGREE COMPLETION REQUIRES REGISTRATION FOR THE FALL SEMESTER.

Friday, December 13: Last day for dissertation defense registration approval by University Dean of Graduate Education for defenses scheduled January 2, 2025.

Thursday, December 19 through Friday, December 31:  Due to recess and holidays, no dissertation registrations will be completed in the University Graduate Education office. No PhD defenses may be held during this time period.

December 31: December 2024 PhD conferral date.

The March 2025 PhD conferral date will be updated in late spring 2024.

Friday, April 26 , 4 p.m.: Last day to submit final corrected dissertation to the ProQuest website to fulfill degree requirements for a May 2024 degree.

Approximately, 24 hours after oral exam, an email is sent that details out the next steps. Including uploading the final abstract and dissertation to ProQuest®, submitting a UR Research authorization form, and completing two required surveys.

Survey Completion

There are two required survey’s for completion of the PhD Process. The University of Rochester PhD Survey and the national Survey of Earned Doctorates. The links to completing these surveys will be included in the completion memo sent post-defense.

We use a service called ProQuest to administer the electronic final thesis/dissertation (ETD) submission. ProQuest provides services that enable strategic acquisition, management and discovery of information collections. Once you have made any necessary revisions and the thesis/dissertation is final, you are ready to begin the submission process.

Once you have completed the steps above, you will receive an email the confirms that all of the requirements have been completed and will include a PhD Completion memo.

We offer both an electronic diploma and a paper copy diploma to students after their graduation date. Information on ordering replacement diplomas is located on the registrar’s webpage .

Commencement

The University holds one doctoral commencement ceremony each year in May. Eligibility to walk in the May ceremony includes students that graduated between August of the previous year through August of the current year. As an example, the May 2023 ceremony is for students who graduated August 2022, October 2022, December 2022, February 2023, May 2023 and August 2023. Doctoral students are only eligible to walk once.

Ph.D. Concentrations and Examples

Summary of Ph.D. Program

Doctoral Colloquia  In year one and two you are required to attend. The colloquia convenes weekly and features presentations of work-in-progress and completed work by Harvard faculty, faculty and researchers from outside Harvard, and Harvard doctoral students. Ph.D. students present once in the colloquia over the course of their career.

Research Apprenticeship The Research Apprenticeship is designed to provide ongoing training and mentoring to develop your research skills throughout the entire program.

Teaching Fellowships The Teaching Fellowship is an opportunity to enhance students' teaching skills, promote learning consolidation, and provide opportunities to collaborate with faculty on pedagogical development.

Comprehensive Exams  The Written Exam (year 2, spring) tests you on both general and concentration-specific knowledge. The Oral Exam (year 3, fall/winter) tests your command of your chosen field of study and your ability to design, develop, and implement an original research project.

Dissertation  Based on your original research, the dissertation process consists of three parts: the Dissertation Proposal, the writing, and an oral defense before the members of your dissertation committee.

Culture, Institutions, and Society (CIS) Concentration

In CIS, you will examine the broader cultural, institutional, organizational, and social contexts relevant to education across the lifespan. What is the value and purpose of education? How do cultural, institutional, and social factors shape educational processes and outcomes? How effective are social movements and community action in education reform? How do we measure stratification and institutional inequality? In CIS, your work will be informed by theories and methods from sociology, history, political science, organizational behavior and management, philosophy, and anthropology. You can examine contexts as diverse as classrooms, families, neighborhoods, schools, colleges and universities, religious institutions, nonprofits, government agencies, and more.

Education Policy and Program Evaluation (EPPE) Concentration

In EPPE, you will research the design, implementation, and evaluation of education policy affecting early childhood, K–12, and postsecondary education in the U.S. and internationally. You will evaluate and assess individual programs and policies related to critical issues like access to education, teacher effectiveness, school finance, testing and accountability systems, school choice, financial aid, college enrollment and persistence, and more. Your work will be informed by theories and methods from economics, political science, public policy, and sociology, history, philosophy, and statistics. This concentration shares some themes with CIS, but your work with EPPE will focus on public policy and large-scale reforms.

Human Development, Learning and Teaching (HDLT) Concentration

In HDLT, you will work to advance the role of scientific research in education policy, reform, and practice. New discoveries in the science of learning and development — the integration of biological, cognitive, and social processes; the relationships between technology and learning; or the factors that influence individual variations in learning — are transforming the practice of teaching and learning in both formal and informal settings. Whether studying behavioral, cognitive, or social-emotional development in children or the design of learning technologies to maximize understanding, you will gain a strong background in human development, the science of learning, and sociocultural factors that explain variation in learning and developmental pathways. Your research will be informed by theories and methods from psychology, cognitive science, sociology and linguistics, philosophy, the biological sciences and mathematics, and organizational behavior.

Rewatch 2024 Spring Commencement and Doctoral Hooding

The University celebrated the achievements of the Class of 2024 at Doctoral Hooding and Spring Commencement ceremonies.

The University celebrated the achievements of the Class of 2024 at Doctoral Hooding and Spring Commencement this weekend.

For friends and family who aren’t able to be in Chapel Hill, or those who want to rewatch, a livestream is available for both ceremonies.

Carolina’s doctoral candidates were recognized during a 9 a.m. ceremony Saturday, May 11 at the Dean E. Smith Center. Graduate students who earned their Ph.D.s in the past academic year will have the hood of their Commencement regalia conferred by their advisers or dissertation committee chairs.

Angeli Achrekar (’13 DrPH), deputy executive director of the Programme Branch at Joint United Nations Programme on HIV-AIDS and an assistant secretary-general of the United Nations, delivered the keynote address.

Spring Commencement was held at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 11 at Kenan Stadium. NASA astronaut Zena Cardman ’10, ’14 (MS), who’s set to travel to space later this year, was the keynote speaker .

3. Rocketbook Matrix cloud-connected reusable paper notebook

PhD students do a lot of work both on paper and with software. Rocketbook finally solved the problem of merging your hand-written notes into your favorite digital services. The Rocketbook Matrix is my personal favorite because it's designed for more technical scientific work. It's got 30 pages of graphing paper and one regular lined page for taking notes, plus a built-in ruler on the inside cover. Did I mention they are reusable? Use their " Pilot Frixion " pens and then wipe the page with a damp cloth after uploading your notes to use it all over again (and win one for the environment!).

4. Wireless Laser Pointer and PowerPoint Presenter

Laser pointers are one thing you never think about until the moment you don’t have one that works. I personally  own this one  because it’s got everything you need, from the pen clip to volume buttons and slide control buttons. DinoFire has several tiers with different features, but you can’t go wrong with any of them. 

5. rOtring or Staedtler Mechanical Pencil

Mechanical pencils are an essential daily tool for researchers in STEM on the job and in the classroom. But in the new digital age, they often find themselves using touchscreens as well. 

That’s why my new favorite is the rOtring 800 Retractable Mechanical Pencil, (0.5 mm) . This one turns from a pencil to a stylus on the fly, and also ensures the tip isn’t poking holes in your pocket all day like most other models. This is truly the top-end mechanical pencil and will make a special gift.

Staedtler is another brand much-loved by scientists and engineers. This model is cheaper and will last a long time, but just isn’t convertible to a stylus. You can’t go wrong with either one.

6. Oh, the Places You'll Go! By Dr. Seuss

This might seem like it’s only for kids, but Dr. Seuss’ whimsical wisdom is often applied to the biggest moments of our lives. As a graduation gift, it’s perfect. The timeless message focuses on the success that lies within, as your graduate readies for a new phase in life. Plus, it’s a small book they can keep forever to pass the wisdom on to their kids.

Many of this year's graduating college students were looking forward to their first formal commencement ceremony.

"I was a 2020 graduate in high school," says Isa Johnson, a senior at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Because of the pandemic, her high school graduation couldn't happen in person.

She was excited to finally get a traditional graduation this year, but the unrest on her campus has forced her to adjust her expectations.

After Jewish student organizations at USC raised concerns about valedictorian Asna Tabassum's past social media activity, the school cut Tabassum's speech from commencement. Other students rushed to her defense, and marched on campus in support. Eventually, the administration canceled the school's main commencement , citing safety concerns.

"We were finally going to be able to have... graduation," Johnson says, "and then within a whole week it was all taken away."

Columbia and Emory universities change commencement plans after weeks of turmoil

Across the country, protests on college campuses are running up against graduation season. Over the weekend, ceremonies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and Indiana University Bloomington were marked by protests. Graduating students in Michigan interrupted the ceremony with chants, Palestinian flags and banners. At Indiana's commencement, a plane with a banner that read "LET GAZA LIVE!" flew overhead and a group of graduating students staged a walkout.

Schools with upcoming ceremonies are announcing extra safety precautions and venue changes. On Monday, following weeks of campus tensions, Columbia University in New York City joined USC in canceling its main ceremony . It's also moving smaller, school-based ceremonies off the main lawn, where protestors have been gathering, and into an outdoor sports venue. Also on Monday, Emory University, in Atlanta, said it was moving the ceremony to a venue in Duluth, Ga., over 20 miles away.

Johnson, at USC, says she understands why students feel the need to protest, but a lot of her classmates are upset about how their graduation has been affected.

"They're kind of just like, you know, 'I want a normal graduation.' I just wish things could be normal on campus. The atmosphere on campus isn't what it usually is," she says. "I think it makes a lot of people uncomfortable."

How campuses are preparing for graduation

After Oct. 7 – when Hamas attacked Israel, killing more than 1,200 people and taking at least 240 hostages – Israel retaliated by bombarding Gaza. That war has killed at least 34,622 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.

In mid-April, college students on campuses around the country began protesting in support of Palestinians. Students are calling for their schools to divest from companies that do business with Israel, among other demands. The movement has led to the arrest of at least 2,500 protestors, according to the Associated Press .

Students are organizing in highly visible spaces on campus, like the main quad of a school, and they're often opting for sit-ins rather than passing protests with a scheduled beginning and end. At several schools, students have formed encampments, pitching tents and living outside for days at a time.

At the same time, campuses are preparing to receive families eager to celebrate graduation.

At Cal Poly Humboldt in Arcata, Calif., the school is still cleaning up from a protest that ended with the student occupation of two campus buildings. The school says graduation ceremonies this coming weekend will be modified for security and held at three off-campus sites, as the campus remains closed.

At Wesleyan University in Connecticut, the school says it will not disperse the student encampment on the main lawn, so it may still be up during graduation at the end of May. At Harvard University, students are camped on Harvard Yard, but not in a place that would interfere with commencement later this month. Still, in a message to the school community on Monday, Interim President Alan Garber said students who continue to participate in the encampment "will be referred for involuntary leave."

At other colleges, administrators have negotiated agreements with protesting students. Protestors at Brown University recently agreed to clear their encampment in exchange for a divestment vote later this fall by the school's governing board.

Brown sophomore Daniel Solomon sits on the school's Student Organizing Committee on Antisemitism, and was involved in the negotiations.

"A big part of the discussion was not interrupting commencement and reunion weekend and to have a peaceful reading period, to have a peaceful finals period," he explains.

Other students have different priorities. NPR spoke with students who were part of the protests at UCLA and Columbia, two schools that saw confrontations between students as well as with police . Many didn't want to be named because they were concerned about doxxing, but they said they felt that raising awareness about what's happening in Gaza is more important than commencement ceremonies.

Not every campus is steeped in turmoil

Other campuses have seen little to no disruption from protests. At some of these schools, classes have wrapped for the year and students' minds are elsewhere. Charles Burns, a fourth year student at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, described a scene from his last ever undergraduate class:

"My professor asked us, 'OK, if any of you guys were at, say, Columbia or Brown or any of these campuses, how many of you would be participating in an encampment?' And... this is like a huge class – like 150 to 200 kids – maybe like 1 or 2 raise their hands."

Over the weekend, the University of Virginia's small encampment did get broken up by police and several people were arrested. Since then things have been quiet, and Burns is hoping they stay that way. As with Johnson at USC, this will be his first official graduation. In 2020, because of the pandemic, he had a drive-through high school commencement.

He's excited to get the full experience this year, and to have his grandparents make the trip from Kansas City to Charlottesville.

"Any kind of disruption to my college graduation... that would be a huge bummer. So I can only hope it doesn't happen. We'll see."

UT to add 576 beds with new graduate student housing complex, boost housing scholarships

The University of Texas will move forward with a graduate student housing project that will bring 576 beds along with entertainment, dining and grocery options. The UT System Board of Regents on Thursday approved the university's proposal to build the project at 1900 Comal St.

The new development is the second phase of the university's plan to expand graduate student housing, UT President Jay Hartzell told the American-Statesman on Thursday. The new complex will be built near another new graduate student housing project UT plans to open in the fall with about 780 beds.

It will also be near UT's athletic facilities and will have five new beach volleyball courts, which will allow the UT women's team to host NCAA competitions.

The project is part of the university's commitment to establishing "high-quality affordable housing" and a strong sense of community for graduate students, which will help UT attract top talent, Hartzell said.

"When I got the job in 2020, this was on the drawing board," Hartzell said. "As a person who went to graduate school at UT, I get the need. And as the city's gotten more expensive, this is just one more thing we're trying to do to ensure students choose us."

Jim Davis, UT chief operating officer, said costs for the new graduate complex are still being estimated, and it is expected to open in 2027.

The new development will feature about 9,000 square feet of retail space and 3,000 square feet for dining, which will help support the athletic and East Campus communities, a university spokesperson said. With the latest project, UT will have about 2,250 graduate student beds available in three complexes.

The spokesperson said rental costs for the Phase Two housing units have not yet been determined but are expected to be at or below market value.

Davis said the two residential complexes are the university's first new graduate student housing projects in about 40 years.

What else is UT doing for student housing?

The university is also continuing its housing scholarship program in the upcoming school year after launching the program this year to help low- and middle-income students with on-campus housing costs. UT spent about $5 million to subsidize housing costs for about 3,200 on-campus students who qualified for UT's tuition assistance program, Texas Advance Commitment .

The university is increasing its investment in the program to $7.5 million to account for price increases and to serve more students, Hartzell said. Texas Advance Commitment 1 students can receive $1,800 to $2,300, and Texas Advance Commitment 2 students (those with higher family income levels) can receive $900 to $1,400.

In February, regents gave UT permission to begin negotiations to start building an estimated $145 million, 1,000-bed undergraduate student housing complex  in place of the Whitis Court residence hall, which has about 200 beds. This will be the first newly built undergraduate housing complex since 2007, though the university purchased Dobie Twenty21 with a capacity of almost 1,000 student residents in 2021.

With the new undergraduate and two new graduate student complexes, UT is on a path to add about 2,000 beds by 2027.

What does the UT System board's action mean?

The board's decision Thursday authorizes UT to enter into a private-public partnership agreement — the same process the two other new complexes underwent. The university will enter into a lease agreement with the 2033 Higher Education Development Foundation, a nonprofit that advises the university on real estate matters, that will then contract with a private developer for the property.

The regents also authorized the university to use the UT System's Revenue Financing System, which also is financing the undergraduate complex project.

Site permitting and design will start this summer. The design will be similar to the East Campus Graduate Apartments, Davis said.

Hartzell thanked the board for its approval of the project and said he hopes UT's increase of housing supply — with the new beds and scholarship support — will help students tackle rising living costs and choose to enroll at UT.

"It really pertains to this goal of trying to find more high-quality, affordable housing for our graduate students," Hartzell said. "And build a sense of community that has vibrancy to it."
