Hockey is India's national sport, but it is played by many countries. It is a high-speed game played between two teams. Both sides have 11 players each. The goal of all players is to strike the ball into the net of the opposing team in order to score points. In 1928, India won the world championship in hockey and six gold medals in the Olympic Games. The period from 1928 to 1956 is regarded as the golden period of Indian hockey. The athletic hockey players made the country proud as India had won numerous Olympic hockey medals.

Hockey is the national sport of India. This game is played in many forms all throughout the world. The core rules, however, apply everywhere. When it comes to India, the country has an excellent track record. India has won six gold medals and numerous matches in a row at the Olympics. The origins of hockey can be traced back to the mid-nineteenth century. In its Olympic debut in the 1928 Amsterdam Games, the Indian hockey team won its first Olympic gold medal without allowing a single goal.

India's hockey juggernaut won six straight Olympic gold medals and 24 consecutive matches from 1928 to 1956.

When playing hockey, there are several gears and equipment that protect a player from serious harm. Helmets, shoulder pads, neck protection, and jockstraps are all recommended for safety. The game is particularly important in India because it has been designated as the national sport of the country. Furthermore, India has a lengthy and distinguished sporting heritage.

To summarise, despite the fact that hockey is India's national sport, it has never been adequately recognised. But this can be done by reviving hockey's golden age.

Our hockey team is currently underfunded by the government, but with our assistance, they can revive hockey's golden days.

Hockey is India's national sport. It is also a popular and engaging game that many countries like playing. The game has many rules that must be obeyed by each team for fair play to occur. This game is performed in various variations all across the world. However, the fundamental rules apply everywhere. When it comes to India, the country's track record is pretty good. India has won six gold medals in the Olympics and numerous matches in a row.

Origins | Hockey's origins can be traced back to ancient times.. According to historical sources, a rudimentary variant of the game used to be played in Egypt 4,000 years ago and in Ethiopia approximately 1,000 years ago. An ancient form of the game was also played in Iran around 2,000 years ago. Several museums have proof that the Romans, Greeks, and Aztecs all played a variation of the game several centuries before Columbus arrived in the New World. The modern game of hockey arose in England in the mid-18th century, owing partly to the expansion of public institutions such as Eton.

India’s History Of Hockey | The first hockey club was established in Calcutta in 1885-86, and shortly after, Bombay and Punjab followed suit. The Indian hockey team won its first Olympic gold medal without allowing a single goal in its Olympic debut tournament at the 1928 Amsterdam Games. The wizardry of Indian hockey star Dhyan Chand, who dazzled the Amsterdam crowd with his brilliant talents, was the defining feature of this ruthless dominance. From 1928 until 1956, India's hockey juggernaut won six consecutive Olympic gold medals and won 24 successive matches. During this time, India scored 178 goals while surrendering only seven.

Hockey Equipment | There are numerous gears and equipment that safeguard a player from significant injury when playing hockey in a safe manner. Helmets, shoulder pads, neck guards, jockstraps, elbow pads, a hockey stick, and a ball or puck are also included in this equipment.

Hockey Rules | When teaching hockey to young children, you can apply the following basic rules; the ball can only be hit using the flat side of the player's stick. Other than the goalkeeper, Hockey players are not permitted to control the ball with their feet or any other part of their body at any time.

A goal can only be scored from inside the striking circle in front of the opposing goal box. It does not count if the hockey ball is hit from outside the circle and goes into the goal.

Hockey is a contact-free sport. Players are not permitted to push, trip, or physically contact an opponent. If this occurs, the other side may be given a free hit or a penalty.

The game is very important in India because it has been designated as the country's national sport. In addition, India has a long and illustrious history in sports. Furthermore, India has numerous excellent players who have represented the country, and it is the oldest recognised game in the country.

To summarise, hockey is India's national sport, yet it has never been formally recognised. But we can make this official by resurrecting the golden era of hockey. Our hockey team currently lacks government funding, but with our help, they can restore hockey's glory days.

Essay on Hockey

500+ words essay on hockey.

Hockey is one of the oldest and most popular team sports. Hockey is believed to have been in existence about 1200 years before the Ancient Games of Olympia. This game is played in most countries of the world. In India, hockey was introduced by the British Army regiments, and soon it became popular. The Indian Hockey team has won a total of eight gold medals, one silver and three bronze medals in the Olympics. This essay on hockey will help students to understand the sport. Also, they get to know the rules for playing this sport. They can also go through the CBSE Essays to get the list of essay topics. It helps them in improving their writing skills, and they can score good marks in the writing section of the English exam.

History of Hockey

The Hockey Association was founded in 1886. The first international tournament took place in 1895, and the International Rules Board was founded in 1900. The International Hockey Federation is the global governing body of field hockey, founded on 7th January 1924 in Paris. The Federation of International Hockey (FIH) not only regulates the sport but is also responsible for its development and promotion so as to guarantee a secure future for hockey. The FIH retains overall responsibility for hockey worldwide, including the rules of hockey, umpiring and coaching.

The British brought the hockey game to India. The first hockey club was formed in Kolkata in 1885. The Indian hockey team won the first Olympic gold in 1928 at the Amsterdam Games. They made their Olympic debut without conceding a single goal. The credit for this win goes to the legend Dhyan Chand, who stole the heart of everyone with his dazzling skills. It was the golden era of Indian hockey when India produced some of the finest players in hockey.

How to Play Hockey?

The rules set by the International Hockey Federation FIH are used worldwide to play hockey games. Hockey is played between two teams of 11 players each, including a goalkeeper. Before starting the game, a coin is tossed between the captains of the two teams. The team captain that wins the toss has to choose the starting end or start with the ball. The game time is divided into four quarters of 15 minutes each, 15-02-15-10-15-2-15. At the start of each quarter, as well as after goals are scored, the match is started with a pass from the centre of the field.

Field players may only play the ball with the flat side of the stick. Tackling is permitted as long as the tackler does not make contact with the attacker or his stick before playing the ball. Further, the player is not allowed to deliberately use his body or stick to shield the ball from a legitimate tackle. A goal is scored when an attacker strikes the ball into the goal from within the striking circle, even if the ball touches the defender and goes into the goal.

When the ball passes over the sidelines, it is returned to play from the sideline either by an individual player by himself or with a push or hit, taken by a member of the team whose players were not the last to touch the ball before crossing the sideline. If it crosses the goal line after being last touched by an attacker, a 15-metre hit or pass can be made by any player in the defending team. A 15-metre hit is also awarded for offences committed by the attacking side within 15 metres of the end of the pitch they are attacking.

National Sports Day of India

The National Sports Day in India is celebrated on 29th August to commemorate Major Dhyan Chand’s birth anniversary. In 2012, the Government of India designated 29th August as the country’s “National Sports Day”. On this occasion, the President of India gives out all the sports-related awards like Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award and Rajiv Khel Ratna Award. It is done to honour sportspersons and coaches who have made the nation proud with their service in their respective sports.

Hockey is a popular and interesting sport. But still, in India, it has not got much attention. There are very few people who have a passion for hockey and would like to be a part of the Indian hockey team. The Government of India should give more facilities and pay more attention to promoting hockey. It should be included in Physical Education, and proper coaching should be provided so students can start playing hockey at the school level.

Our National Game Hockey

Field Hockey is the National Sport of our Country. The designation of ‘National Sport’ is either designated on the basis of the popularity of a Game, or on the basis of the Game’s historical background. Hockey has a long-standing rich legacy, and this fact also gives this Sport the credibility of being the ‘National Game’ of our Country, India. Added to this, another obvious reason for designating this Sport as the National Sport of the Country, for the pride that is always evoked by the Countrymen.

In order to play this Game, this Game is required to be conducted either on plain grass or on a mat-like material called the turf. Playing field Hockey is a popularly played Sport in our Country, which is played by forming teams. This Game is played on grass, on artificial or watered turf, or on synthetic fields. The team has ten players in total and a Goalkeeper.

The strikers who play this Game are exceptionally skilled at hitting the targets, this will help them to shoot their shots successfully and make them enter the Goal post. While the Goalkeeper gets the responsibility of hurdling and stopping the Goals so that they can stop the opposite team from scoring.

Hockey is a Sport that requires a lot of practice and dedication. The Game is played usually on a rectangular field, and this is considered to be an outdoor Sport. The Goalkeeper stands near the Goal post wearing a heavily padded jersey and helmets also with a curved Hockey stick. The Goalkeeper is required to wear protective suits because the ball, striking with the Hockey stick, rushes towards the Goal post at a highly accelerated speed, if the Goalkeeper does not wear a padded suit this may cause severe injuries to the Goalkeeper.

The Game starts with a toss between the captains of the two distinct teams. The captain who wins the toss will either select his side of the field where his team will play or he chooses to pass. The Game is played for 75 minutes in a single session. There are two rounds of each thirty-five minutes and one break in between the two sessions. The interval time is used for medications, strategic planning, also for treatment.

In this Sport, there are two teams who play against each other and they both try to score by posting the Goal in the Goalpost. At present, there are different forms of Hockey i.e.- Field Hockey, Ice Hockey, Roller Hockey, Sledge Hockey, and even Street Hockey.

Category: Essays and Paragraphs On November 22, 2018 By Mary

Hockey is a form of sport that involves two teams. The two teams compete against each other by moving around a ball using a hockey stick and score it into the opponent’s goals.

There are different types of hockey and this includes ice hockey, field hockey or bandy.

History of hockey

Hockey is a sport that has been in existence for many years. It is believed that the first game of hockey can be traced back to the countries of Egypt and Ethiopia. This was where a crude form of hockey was initially played. This was around 4000 years ago and 1000 BC respectively. There is also evidence available in museums that show that hockey was also played by Greeks, Romans and Indians centuries ago. A museum in Athens contains a marble slab that proves that the Greek youth played field hockey. The word hockey is believed to have originated from the French word ‘ hoquet’ which means ‘shepherd’s crook’. Over the years, this sport has advanced to form the modern hockey.

History of hockey in India

The history of hockey in India can be traced back to the year 1885-1886. This was when the first hockey club in India was formed in Calcutta . At this time, there were no national competitions for the sport. The year 1895 saw some advancement as it was the time when the Beighton Cup tournament was organized in Calcutta and the Aga Khan tournament was organized in Bombay. The Hot Weather tournament of Lahore gained popularity in the early 20 th century. Throughout this time, there was no central body for this sport. In the year 1925, the Indian Hockey Federation was formed which gave the Indian players a chance to play globally. Indian players played their first international match in New Zealand where they won 18 matches, lost 1 match and drew 2 matches. After the Indian hockey federation got authorization for global membership in 1927, they participated in the 1928 Summer Olympic Games.

  • Another rule in hockey is that one is not allowed to swing their hockey sticks too high. This is to avoid hitting other players.
  • No third party is allowed to interfere as only two players are allowed to touch the ball at a time.
  • One can only hit the ball with the face of the stick . Using the back side attracts a penalty.
  • It is allowed to intercept the ball when another player has it but you should not push them.

History of hockey in India: Taught by the British, India conquered the world

Introduced in the Indian army during British rule, hockey attracted the masses so much so that India won a hat-trick of gold medals not once but twice.

Among the world’s premier sports with an Olympic legacy and featuring blue riband events like the World Cup, Champions Trophy and FIH Pro League, field hockey traces its roots back to the 16th century.

One of the most ancient games in the world -- a crude form of the sport was played in Egypt some 4,000 years ago -- the history of hockey can be traced back to 1527 in Scotland. Back then, it was called ‘hokie’ – where players hit around a small ball with sticks.

However, the first version of modern-day field hockey was developed by the British sometime between the late 18th and early 19th century. It was introduced as a popular school game then and made its way to the Indian army during British rule in the 1850s.

The availability of large plots of land as playing fields and the uncomplicated nature of equipment meant that hockey gradually became the popular sport of choice among children and young adults in India, with the country’s first hockey club being formed in then Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1855.

In the next few decades, national competitions like the Beighton Cup in Calcutta and Aga Khan tournament in Bombay (now Mumbai) popularised the sport further, especially in erstwhile provinces of Bombay and Punjab.

There were talks of forming a hockey association in India in 1907 and 1908, but it didn’t materialise. The Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) was only formed in 1925, one year after the formation of the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

The IHF organised its first international tour in 1926 to New Zealand, where the Indian hockey men’s team played 21 matches and won 18. The tournament saw the emergence of a young Dhyan Chand , who would go on to become arguably the best hockey player the world has ever seen.

After a rocky relationship with the Olympic Games until 1924 -- hockey was only played in 1908 and 1920 and dropped for the other editions -- the presence of a global sports body (FIH) ensured that hockey gained permanent Olympic status starting Amsterdam 1928.

The Indian Hockey Federation applied and earned an FIH membership in 1927, thus ensuring that the Indian hockey team would play its first Olympics in 1928.

It was the beginning of a legacy - decorated with eight gold medals - a record till today.

Dominating the Olympics

The Indian hockey team clinched the Olympic gold medal in its first attempt in 1928. India played five matches, scoring 29 goals and conceding none, with Dhyan Chand scoring 14 of them.

The hockey wizard became the cornerstone of the Indian hockey team as it won two more gold medals in 1932 and 1936, completing a hat-trick of Olympic hockey golds. Dhyan Chand was made captain in 1936 in what would prove to be his final Olympic Games.

When the Olympics returned after World War II in 1948, India found a new genius in the legendary Balbir Singh Sr as he steered them to a second hat-trick of Olympic gold medals in 1948, 1952, and 1956, this time as an independent nation. The period was one of the most significant in the history of hockey in India.

While Pakistan halted the gold run in the final at the 1960 Rome Olympics, India would ascend to the top step at Tokyo 1964. However, it was apparent that India’s domination of the sport was weakening.

The Indian hockey team had won silver at the 1958 and 1962 Asian Games, before finally winning gold in the 1966 edition. However, India only managed a bronze at Mexico 1968, in what was then their lowest finish in the Olympics.

The 1970s: Women’s team goes international

Hockey expanded its reach beyond the Olympics with the first Hockey World Cup held in 1971 in Spain. Though Pakistan beat Spain to win the title and India finished third, the sport was steadily gaining popularity in Europe, and innovations were underway.

India did manage another bronze at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, before making the World Cup final in 1973, where they lost to the Netherlands.

While India’s representation in global hockey was largely restricted to the men, the women’s team made its first appearance in international competition at the inaugural women’s Hockey World Cup in 1974, finishing a creditable fourth.

There seemed to be an upturn when the men’s team won its only World Cup title in 1975.

But the 1976 Montreal Olympics was the first to be played on astroturf – artificial grass fields specially curated for the sport - and the men’s Indian hockey team finished seventh.

It ended India’s Olympic podium run for the first time while the women’s team mustered a similar finish at the 1978 World Cup.

In this decade, the men’s team also ended up with three consecutive Asian Games silver medals in 1970, 1974, and 1978.

1980s-2008: A period of stagnation

The 1980s actually began well for the Indian hockey teams.

The men’s team took advantage of a depleted field to win their eighth Olympic gold at Moscow 1980 while the women’s team finished fourth in what was the first edition of women’s hockey at the Olympics.

At the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, where women’s hockey was played for the first time, the women’s Indian hockey team clinched a historic gold at home while the men’s team won silver.

However, there were no more accolades forthcoming after this period.

India were slow to take to the astroturfs, with local players still mostly playing on natural grass fields, which meant that the Indian hockey teams fell short at global events.

Neither the men nor the women were able to make the semi-finals at the World Cups or the (only men’s) Champions Trophy, with their medals restricted to a bronze each at the 1986 Asian Games.

Dhanraj Pillay's debut for the Indian hockey team in 1989 breathed new life into the sport as India boasted of a global superstar once more.

However, without adequate support, Pillay was unable to inspire a wave of success for the Indian hockey team, though he almost single-handedly ended India’s Asian Games gold drought with a stellar individual campaign in 1998.

The women also continued to struggle globally through this period, though they won silver at the 1998 Asian Games.

The introduction of hockey at the Commonwealth Games in 1998 provided another platform for global hockey. The Indian men’s and women’s teams finished fourth in the inaugural edition.

The women’s Indian hockey team then went on to win gold at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, an edition where the men were unable to qualify. The women then won silver in the 2006 edition, as the men could only manage sixth place, and bronze at the 2006 Asian Games.

The decline of Indian hockey hit rock bottom in 2008 when the men’s team, for the first time since 1928, failed to qualify for the Beijing Olympics.

Revival of Indian hockey

After the disappointment of 2008, the men’s Indian hockey team responded by returning to the podium at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, winning silver and the 2010 Asian Games, where they won bronze.

The men’s Indian hockey team qualified for the 2012 London Olympics. Though India ended last, it represented a small bit of progress.

The men also qualified for Rio 2016 but this time, it was the women who stole the spotlight as they qualified for their first Olympic Games in 36 years.

The women’s Indian hockey team won silver at the 2018 Asian Games.

In the years since, Indian hockey seems to have found its feet again.

The women’s team, led by Rani Rampal, won silver at the 2018 Asian Games, achieving their best ranking of ninth in the world the same year.

The men’s Indian hockey team has imbibed an attacking philosophy under new head coach Graham Reid and young captain Manpreet Singh.

The men’s team played its first FIH Pro League campaign in 2020, winning games against the best in the world like Belgium, Australia and the Netherlands.

At Tokyo 2020, the men’s hockey team ended a 41-year Olympic medal drought with a bronze medal after a thrilling win against Germany in the playoff.

The women’s team, in only its third Olympic appearance, showed tremendous grit to finish fourth, narrowly losing out on the bronze medal to Great Britain.

India women also achieved one of their most famous victories when they knocked out favourites Australia in the quarter-finals

Cut to the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, India won the silver and bronze in the men's and women's tournaments, respectively. At the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the Indian men's hockey team won the gold medal while the women finished with a bronze.

Both the men’s and women’s teams are formidable contenders on the global stage and Indian hockey is now in a position to reclaim the glory of old.

Artificial general intelligence or agi: a very short history.

Artificial General Intelligence, AGI concept. AI can learn and solve any human's intellectual tasks.

AGI is the new AI, promoted by tech leaders and AI experts , all promising its imminent arrival, for better or for worse. Anyone frightened by Elon Musk’s warning that “AGI poses a grave threat to humanity, perhaps the greatest existential threat we face today,” should first study the evolution of AGI from science-fiction to real-world fiction.

The term AGI was coined in 2007 when a collection of essays on the subject was published. The book, titled Artificial General intelligence , was co-edited by Ben Goertzel and Cassio Pennachin. In their introduction, they provided a definition:

“AGI is, loosely speaking, AI systems that possess a reasonable degree of self-understanding and autonomous self-control, and have the ability to solve a variety of complex problems in a variety of contexts, and to learn to solve new problems that they didn’t know about at the time of their creation.” The rationale for “christening” AGI for Goertzel and Pennachin was to distinguish it from “run-of-the-mill ‘artificial intelligence’ research,” as AGI is “explicitly focused on engineering general intelligence in the short term.”

In 2007, “run-of-the-mill” research focused on narrow challenges and AI programs of the time could only “generalize within their limited context.” While “work on AGI has gotten a bit of a bad reputation,” according to Goertzel and Pennachin, “AGI appears by all known science to be quite possible. Like nanotechnology, it is ‘merely an engineering problem’, though certainly a very difficult one.”

AGI is considered by Goertzel and Pennachin as only an engineering challenge because “we know that general intelligence is possible, in the sense that humans – particular configurations of atoms – display it. We just need to analyze these atom configurations in detail and replicate them in the computer.”

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Goertzel and Pennachin seem to contradict themselves when they also assert that the Japanese 5 th generation Computer System project “was doomed by its pure engineering approach, by its lack of an underlying theory of mind.” But maybe there’s no contradiction here because they assume that the mind is also a collection of atoms that can be emulated in a computer by the right engineering approach: “We have several contributions in this book that are heavily based on cognitive psychology and its ideas about how the mind works. These contributions pay greater than zero attention to neuroscience, but they are clearly more mind-focused than brain-focused.”

The brain-focused approach presented in the book is “a neural net based approach, trying to model the behavior of nerve cells in the brain and the emergence of intelligence therefrom. Or one can proceed at a higher level, looking at the general ways that information processing is carried out in the brain, and seeking to emulate these in software.”

This was written, of course, when the real fringe of the AI community—ignored in this 2007 book—were the handful of people (e.g., 2018 Turing Award winners Geoffrey Hinton, Yann LeCun and Joshua Bengio) who in 2007 coined the term “deep learning” to describe their machine learning approach to finding patterns in lots of data using statistical analysis algorithms. These have been called since the 1950s “artificial neural networks,” algorithms that have been presented throughout the years with no empirical evidence as “mimicking the brain.”

In 2007, the people that were the first to discuss various approaches to achieving the newly-termed “AGI” completely ignored the fringe approach to “AI” that in 2012 became the mainstream approach to AI with the successful marriage of GPUs, lots of data, and artificial neural networks. Still, the researchers previously on the fringe of AI and now the kings of the data mountain understood well the branding and marketing power of “AGI” and continued in the exalted tradition of promising the imminent arrival of machines with human-like intelligence (or superintelligence) and the possible extinction of humanity by these possibly malevolent machines.

The key person in the importation of this tradition to the new successful approach to AI was apparently Shane Legg, a co-founder of DeepMind. Legg suggested to Goertzel the term “Artificial General Intelligence” and described to Cade Metz (who quoted Legg in his book Genius Makers ) the general attitude to the subject in the AI community around 2007: “If you talked to anybody about general AI, you would be considered at best eccentric, at worst some kind of delusional, nonscientific character.”

Aspiring to build superintelligence while worrying about what it could do to humanity, Legg joined his colleague Demis Hassabis (they were exploring the connections between the brain and machine learning at UCL) to establish DeepMind. Hassabis told Legg that “they could raise far kore money from venture capitalists than they ever could writing grant proposals as professors,” Metz reports. With AGI as the stated aim of DeepMind, mentioned in the first line of their business plan, “they told anyone who would listen, including potential investors, that this research could be dangerous.”

To get to Peter Thiel, their first investor, Hassabis gave a presentation at the 2010 Singularity Conference, arguing that the best way to build artificial intelligence was to mimic the way the brain worked: “We should be focusing on the algorithmic level of the brain, extracting the kind of representations and algorithms the brain uses to solve the kind of problems we want to solve with AGI.”

There you have it. Using the term “AGI”—with its exciting connotations of both saving and destroying humanity—to get the attention and deep pockets of investors, claiming to replicate the human brain in the computer while pursuing a statistical analysis method that has nothing to do empirically speaking with how the human brain works .

Whether insisting that their approach to AI resembles the biological processes of the human brain (“connectionism”) or that they can replicate the process of human thinking in the computer (“symbolic AI”), the two key approaches to AI since the term was coined in 1955 have banked on the widely accepted notion that “ we are as gods .” This belief in modern man’s ability to conquer all frontiers, even replicate man in the machine, has been based on the centuries-old idea that humans are a “particular configurations of atoms.”

Next in my AGI Washing Series, I will offer a short pre-history of AGI.
