  • Assistantships

Graduate students can assist university faculty with teaching or part-time research in exchange for financial support. Assistantships usually cover at least part of the cost of tuition and might also include a stipend. One way for prospective international students to learn about assistantship opportunities at a university is to reach out to the academic department that interests them.

One way for students to reduce the amount they spend is to become more selective about where and when they spend. They may also wish to establish a formal budget, either paper or digital. When setting their budget, international students should be sure to account for costs other than tuition , such as taxes. Student discounts can translate into major savings . International students can get bargains on computers, software programs, phone plans and other essentials if they take advantage of student discounts. They also should consider buying used textbooks, shopping at secondhand stores, capitalizing on travel discount programs and attending campus events that provide free food.

  • Comparison shopping

Saving money might be just as effective as raising it. While graduate school is a big financial investment no matter where a student enrolls, some universities are more expensive than others. Prospective international students can research tuition costs and application fees by exploring the U.S. News Best Graduate Schools directory and by visiting school websites.

  • Curricular practical training

Curricular practical training, or CPT , is full- or part-time work such as an internship or co-op that is directly related to an international student's field of study. However, students should note that not all CPT positions are paid. Examples of the types of programs that might offer or require CPT are engineering and public health .

  • Fellowships

A fellowship is a monetary award that sometimes comes with a teaching or research requirement. Fellowships are given to students pursuing training in a particular field, usually at the graduate level, and are almost always merit based. Fellowships typically cover tuition and often include an allowance for living expenses called a stipend. Some U.S. universities offer fellowships, as do outside organizations. The California Institute of Technology 's Graduate Studies Office provides an online list of fellowships for international students.

  • Home-country assistance

International students can conduct research on funding offered by the government or other organizations in their home country. However, students should note that funding from these sources might come with certain conditions, such as a requirement to return home after they complete their studies. In 2019-2020, a foreign government or university was the primary source of funding for 4% of international graduate students in the U.S., while a foreign sponsor provided the bulk of funding for 1% of these students, according to a 2020 report produced by the Institute of International Education in collaboration with the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

  • Other types of on-campus employment

International graduate students can look into getting a job at their school , such as tutoring undergraduates. Students who hold F-1 visas can work up to 20 hours per week while they're taking classes and may work full time during breaks. During the coronavirus pandemic, they have been permitted to work remotely . However, students shouldn't expect to cover their tuition costs through part-time, on-campus work, says David Sheridan, director of financial aid at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs . It's better to think of this amount of income as "pocket money" for miscellaneous expenses, he says.

Personal resources and family funds

Most international students in the U.S. use their own savings or ask family members for help to pay for graduate programs. In 2019-2020, the primary source of funding for 56% of international graduate students in the U.S. was personal and family resources, according to the 2020 report by the IIE.

  • Private loans

Loans must be paid back, usually with interest. This is why students should explore all other types of aid before turning to loans, experts say. Some companies in the U.S. will lend money to prospective or current international students . Many lenders, but not all, require international student borrowers to have a co-signer who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. A co-signer agrees to repay the debt if the borrower doesn't.

  • Scholarships

Some schools and private organizations offer scholarships for international students . Good places to begin a scholarship search include a university's financial aid office website and specific academic department pages. There are also free scholarship databases maintained by EducationUSA and the IIE . Prospective students should never have to pay to search for or apply to scholarships and should avoid scholarship portals that charge fees.

Pursuing a PhD in the United States can be a life-changing experience for international students looking to enhance their academic qualifications, advance their careers, and expand their horizons. However, before embarking on this journey, it's important to understand the requirements and expectations of the US doctoral education system.

In this article, we'll delve into the essential PhD requirements in the USA for international students, covering academic qualifications, English language proficiency, standardised tests, funding, and visa procedures.

Table of Contents

Academic qualifications, english language proficiency, standardised tests, visa procedures, frequently asked questions.

Academic qualifications are an important requirement for international students seeking to pursue a PhD in the USA. Students are typically required to hold a bachelor's or master's degree from a recognised university, with a strong academic record and relevant coursework.

The specific academic qualifications required for admission to PhD programs can vary depending on the university and program. Some programs may require a bachelor's degree in a specific field, while others may accept students with a bachelor's degree in a related field. Some programs may also require a master's degree, while others may allow students to earn a master's degree as part of the PhD program.

In addition to the degree requirements, international students may be required to provide official transcripts and diplomas from all institutions attended, as well as a course-by-course evaluation of their academic credentials from a recognised credential evaluation service.

It is also important for international students to have relevant coursework and research experience in their field of study. PhD programs in the USA typically require students to conduct independent research and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in their field. Therefore, having a strong academic background and relevant research experience can increase a student's chances of being admitted to a PhD program.

International students should carefully review the academic qualifications required for each program they are interested in and ensure that they meet the requirements. If their qualifications do not meet the requirements, they may need to take additional coursework or earn a higher degree before applying to PhD programs.

The specific standardised tests required for admission to PhD programs can vary depending on the university and program. Some programs may require the GRE or GMAT, while others may require a different test, such as the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) for programs in the health sciences.

Funding can be a critical consideration for international students pursuing a PhD in the USA. Pursuing a PhD in the USA can be quite expensive, with tuition and living expenses often exceeding $50,000 per year. While federal financial aid is not available to international students, there are a variety of funding options that may be available to help cover the cost of tuition, living expenses , and research-related expenses.

One common source of funding for PhD students is through teaching or research assistantships. These positions typically provide a stipend or salary in exchange for work done in support of the department or faculty member providing the funding. Assistantship opportunities can be competitive, but they can provide valuable experience and financial support for students throughout their program.

Scholarships and fellowships can also be a valuable source of funding for international students pursuing a PhD in the USA. These awards may be offered by the university, private foundations, or other organisations, and can cover some or all of the cost of tuition and living expenses.

International students may also be eligible for funding from their home country or through external sources such as grants or fellowships. It's important for students to research these opportunities and understand any restrictions or requirements that may apply.

Finally, some students may choose to fund their PhD program through personal savings or by taking out student loans. While these options can provide flexibility in terms of funding, it's important for students to carefully consider the long-term financial implications of taking on debt to fund their education.

The visa application process is an important step for international students seeking to pursue a PhD in the USA. International students who are accepted into a PhD program in the USA will typically need to obtain an F-1 student visa.

To begin the visa application process, students will need to provide proof of acceptance into a program, typically in the form of an acceptance letter from the university. In addition, students will need to demonstrate proof of financial support to cover the cost of tuition and living expenses in the USA. This can be done by providing bank statements or other documentation showing that the student or their sponsor has sufficient funds to cover these costs.

Once the initial documentation has been submitted, students will need to complete the DS-160 form, pay the visa application fee, and schedule an appointment at a US embassy or consulate in their home country. During the appointment, students will need to provide biometric data (such as fingerprints) and participate in an interview with a consular officer. The interview is an important part of the visa application process and can be a deciding factor in whether the student is approved for the visa.

It's important for international students to begin the visa application process well in advance of the start of their PhD program, as it can take several weeks or even months to complete all of the necessary steps. Students should also consult with the international student office at their university for guidance and support throughout the process.

  • PhD in USA – A Guide for 2020/21
  • Finding a PhD

A PhD in USA takes approximately 5 – 6 years of full-time study and can cost between $12,000 – $45,000 per academic year. PhD programs in USA differ from that in the UK and Europe in that students must first take taught classes, coursework and exams before starting their research project.

Why Do a PhD in USA?

The United States has long had some of the most distinguished universities and advanced PhD programmes in the world. Combined with curriculum flexibility, rigorous teaching methods, vast funding opportunities, breathtaking campuses and significant career prospects, it’s no wonder that it is one of the most sought-after study destinations for research students.

In addition to comprehensive training standards, here are a few other reasons why a student may choose to undertake their PhD in the United States:

  • Longer learning timeframes – A PhD in the US lasts longer than a PhD in the UK or Europe. This allows students to more confidently transition from undergraduate to postgraduate studies; more commonly referred to as ‘graduate studies’ in the US. This gives you the opportunity to learn more about your subject, research methods and academic writing in general before starting your research project.
  • World-class universities – It’s no secret that some of the most well-known higher education institutions that continue to dominate global rankings are based in the United States. Although many factors go into determining whether a position is right for you, a PhD at a high-ranking American university will undeniably have many benefits, from excellent learning standards to access to innovative equipment and deep expertise.
  • International network – The US has long been a popular choice among PhD students around the world. As such, the US hosts a diverse and multicultural learning environment in which many research students will quickly feel at home.
  • Opportunities – With over 4,000 universities in the US, we can safely say you will have plenty of opportunities to find the ideal combination of project, supervisor and university that works for you.

Universities in USA

Universities in the United States can be divided into two types: public universities and private universities.

Public universities are financed by the state in which they are based. Because of this, public universities charge less for students from within the state and more for students from outside the state, including international students.

Private universities are not financed by their state, but by private donors, research funds and tuition fees. For this reason, private universities generally charge higher tuition fees than public universities and require all students to pay the same amount, regardless of whether they come from out-of-state or abroad.

According to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021 , eight of the top ten universities in the world are located in the United States. These are:

Method of Study

The main difference between a PhD in the US and a PhD in Europe lies in the program structure. Whereas a European PhD essentially consists of a single phase lasting three to four years , an American PhD consists of three different phases, each with its own time frame.

  • Phase One – The first phase lasts approximately two years and focuses on building a basic foundation for the doctoral student. This phase consists largely of taught components such as lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions, in which the student learns more about theoretical concepts and research methods within their discipline.
  • Phase Two – The second phase can be considered an assessment phase, which runs both periodically alongside and at the end of the first phase. Here, students complete coursework and take exams on the basis of the material they have covered of which they must pass in order to proceed to the third phase.
  • Phase Three – The third phase lasts approximately three years and resembles the European PhD structure. During this period, the student undertakes an independent research project, including forming a research design, conducting experiments, writing a thesis (more commonly referred to in the USA as a dissertation) and sitting a viva exam.

Teaching Requirements

Besides structure, a key difference between a PhD program in the US and in Europe is the focus on teaching requirements. In the US, doctoral students are expected to lecture, lead tutorials, host laboratory sessions, mark coursework and provide office hours for undergraduate students. Although students studying in European will likely contribute to these at some point during their study, this would normally be on a voluntary basis and involve less time commitment.

Research Flexibility

Another difference is project flexibility. In Europe, students typically apply to a PhD project predetermined by a supervisor, and although there may be some scope to adapt the project, depending on the funding provider , it will usually be limited to how the project is carried out rather than what it is about. In the US, however, a student applies to become a doctoral candidate within a department rather than applying for a particular research project. This is because students are expected to decide on their thesis topic (also commonly referred to as a dissertation research topic) near the end of their first phase after they have developed a better understanding of their subject and know where their interests lie. Therefore, research students in the US generally have more flexibility and influence in the direction of their research than students in the United Kingdom or Europe.

PhD Admission Requirements in USA

PhD admission into US universities can be highly competitive, both because of the limited number of positions and the large number of annual applicants.

The eligibility requirements for a doctoral program in the USA can generally be divided into four sections:

How to Apply for a PhD in USA

  • Grade Point Average (GPA) – in the US, a scoring system known as Grade Point Average is used to measure academic ability. A student’s GPA is calculated as a weighted score of the subjects they study during their undergraduate degree; an equivalent score is calculated by universities for international applicants. Although universities rarely set minimum GPA requirements for doctoral study, it’s worth being aware that a GPA of 3.0 is equivalent to a UK second class honours (2:1); the typical entry requirement for UK universities.
  • Graduate Records Exam (GRE) – most universities will require you to take a series of examinations known as Graduate Records Exams, which are used to determine your suitability for graduate study. GREs will assess your analytical, reasoning and critical thinking skills as well as your depth of your subject.
  • Student aptitude – in addition to academic ability, US universities also look for characteristics of a strong researcher. These include traits such as engaging in the subject in your own time, e.g. by attending talks and conferences, demonstrating a high degree of independence and enthusiasm, and a general passion for your subject.
  • English Language Proficiency – international students whose first language is not English must sit language exams such as IELTS or TOELF to demonstrate their English language proficiency.

International students will also require a F1 student visa in order to study in the US, however, you would typically apply for this after you have secured a place into a doctorate program.

How to Apply for PhD in USA

When applying for a PhD position at a graduate school, the application process will differ between universities, however, they will all typically ask for the following:

  • Academic CV – a short document summarising your educational background and current level of experience .
  • Personal statement – a document which outlines why you believe you are suitable for PhD study and your passion for the subject.
  • Academic transcripts – a complete breakdown of the modules and their respective marks you have taken as part of your previous/current degree.
  • GRE scores – a transcript of your Graduate Records Exam results.
  • Research statement – a condensed version of a research proposal outlining your general research interests, if required.
  • Recommendation letters – references from several academic referees who endorse your qualities as a person, your abilities as a student and your potential as a doctoral researcher.

Application Deadlines and Fees

Since PhD programs in the United States have taught components, they commence at the same time as all other taught degrees, and therefore share the same application deadlines and start dates. This corresponds to an application period that typically begins in August and ends in February. Admission decisions are typically made in April, with successful students starting in August/September.

When you apply to a graduate school, you will be expected to pay a fee for each doctorate application to cover the school’s administrative costs for processing your application. The fee varies from university to university, but typically ranges from $50 to $100 .

Funding your PhD in USA

It’s very common for a PhD student to receive financial aid in the form of a PhD scholarship; in fact, this will be the case for the vast majority of students in the US.

PhD funding can be ‘fully funded’ covering the student’s graduate program tuition fees, accommodation and living costs, or ‘partially funded’ covering the student’s tuition fee only in part or full.

Besides funding, a graduate student can take on an assistantship, such as a graduate teaching assistant or research assistant, in which they take on a part-time salaried position at the university alongside their studies.

Due to the international and collaborate nature of American universities, there are also a number of international scholarships available, such as the Fulbright Scholarship and the AAUW International Fellowship .

PhD Duration in USA

In the US, a PhD takes approximately 5 – 6 years to complete if studying full-time, and 8 – 10 years if studying part-time.

If you already have a Master’s degree, your first phase can be shortened by one year at the discretion of the university.

Cost of a PhD in USA

The cost of a PhD program in the US can vary considerably depending on the type of university, i.e. whether it’s a public or private university, the doctoral course, i.e. whether it’s in a STEM subject such as computer science, engineering or a non-STEM subject, and whether you are a home or international student.

In general, however, the typical annual tuition fee for a PhD in the US is between $12,000 and $45,000 per academic year.

As with any doctoral degree, additional costs may include travel for collaborations, bench fees, accommodation and living expenses.

Deadlines for applications to PhD programs in the USA tend to be between December and February, and institutions should let you know about your application by April. Most US institutions recommend that you apply as far in advance as you possibly can to give them, and you, plenty of time to make arrangements.

Universities in the USA do not require a masters for you to apply as well. Because of the graduate programs in the US, you will receive your masters degree once you have completed your coursework stage. This practice combines the masters and PhD into one.

It varies from institution to institution, but international students in the USA are required to have a TOEFL score of about 90.

Funding your PhD in USA

PhD students are very likely to receive financial support in the form of PhD scholarships ; some USA PhD students also receive PhD studentships .

Making your PhD application in plenty of time allows you more time to apply for and arrange your PhD funding. Many students find that funding can cover much, or all, of the cost of their PhD studies in the USA, which ranges between $28,000 and $40,000. Deadlines for funding applications can be as early as December before starting your studies in the Autumn/Fall.

There are two types of PhD funding: fully funded, which pays for the student's graduate school tuition fees, accommodation, and living expenses, or partially funded, which pays for the student's tuition only partially or fully.

Can a PhD be fully funded?

Yes, many top universities in the USA offer fully funded PhD programs for eligible students. This funding pays for the student's graduate school tuition fees, accommodation and living expenses. Partially funded PhDs only cover the student's tuition in part or in full.

Some PhD students will receive a stipend from their institution with an assistantship position, but this varies between institutions and between departments within institutions. Other students can find funding from both their own and the American government, and there are plenty of American government schemes like The Fulbright Program that offer funds.

cost of phd in usa for international students

If you are an international student who has decided to do your post-secondary education in the U.S., congratulations! Studying abroad comes with many benefits that go beyond just getting an education. You get a chance to experience a different culture, learn how to navigate living in a new country, and become more attractive to employers who value life and world experience. However, the cost of studying in the U.S. for international students is not to be taken lightly.

While you should not let the cost of studying in the U.S. limit you or hold you back, you need to be aware of how much it will cost you to travel to and live in the U.S. while studying. Most importantly, you must understand that many expenses go above and beyond your tuition. With this in mind, here are the factors that go into the cost of studying in the U.S. for international students.

International Student Tuition Cost

Since tuition is the first thing many people think about when considering the cost of going to university, let’s cover this first. For international students in the U.S.  the cost total of attendance is high – much higher than it is for domestic students. Generally, attending school in the U.S will cost between $10,000 and $55,000 per year. However, the actual cost will depend on where you study and the type of program you enroll in. With this in mind, here is a breakdown of the costs:

  • English language classes – between $700 and $2,000 per month
  • Community college – between $6,000 and $20,000 per year
  • Bachelor’s degree – between $20,000 and $40,000 per year
  • Master’s degree – between $20,000 and $45,000 per year
  • Doctoral degree – between $28,000 and $55,000 per year

Remember that the cost of a master’s degree in the U.S. for international students will depend on what you are studying. An MBA can be more expensive than a master’s degree in another discipline. In addition, if you are studying in a professional degree program, such as medicine, law, or engineering, you may face much higher tuition than you would if you were studying education or humanities.

It is also essential to keep in mind that the cost varies between schools. Some community colleges and universities are less expensive than others for a comparable program. This difference is affected by factors such as the school’s location and level of prestige.

Travel Costs

When considering the cost of studying in the U.S. for international students, you need to consider the cost of travel. After all, if you can’t get to the U.S. from your home country, nothing else matters. This means factoring in the cost of your:

  • Plane ticket
  • Other modes of travel once you reach the U.S.
  • Travel insurance

You will also need to have enough money available to travel home during the school year, or  – at the very least –to travel home in the summer if you choose to, or to travel home in the case of an emergency.

U.S. Student Visa Costs

You will need to apply for and be granted a U.S. student visa to study in the U.S. as an international student. While this is not terribly expensive, you should factor the cost into your overall costs. The cost of an international student visa in the U.S. depends on your visa type. The application fee is $160. Then, the cost of the visa is as follows:

  • F student visa – This is the visa you will need to study full-time at a post-secondary institution, and the application costs $510.
  • M student visa – This is the visa you will need for nonacademic or vocational studies in the U.S., and it costs $160.
  • J student visa – This is the visa you will need if you are an exchange visitor in the U.S., and it costs $160.

Textbooks and Miscellaneous Fees

In addition to the tuition you will have to pay each year, you will need to have money available to buy the textbooks and pay any additional fees you might owe throughout the school year. The average cost of books and fees is $500 to $1,000 per year. Again, this depends on the school you are going to and your program of study.

Cost of Student Housing and Accommodations

The next thing you need to consider is the cost of your accommodations while living in the U.S. There are several accommodation options to consider. You might want to live on campus to be fully immersed in the university or college experience. You might want to live off campus to immerse yourself in the local community. You might opt for the most inexpensive accommodation possible to make the most of your finances.

With all of this in mind, here are the average costs of the various accommodation options:

  • Campus housing – $800 to $900 per month
  • Homestay (living with a host family) – $600 to $2,000 per month
  • Rental – $300 to $3,000+ per month

These costs are a rough average. The cost of accommodations will depend on many factors, the most significant of which is your location. Some cities are more expensive to live in than others. The cost of renting an apartment will also depend on whether you are renting it on your own or you have roommates, and it may come furnished or unfurnished. If it is unfurnished, you will need to buy furniture, so you’ll need to factor that into your budget.

Cost of Living

International students’ total cost of studying in the U.S. includes the daily cost of living. This means your food, utilities, internet, and transportation costs. If you choose to live on campus, most (if not all) of these expenses will be included in your residence fees. In most cases, you can pay for a meal plan at your university, which will cost on average between $150 and $350 per month, depending on the school and the type of meal plan you get.

If you are living off campus and in a homestay situation, you will again have most of these living expenses included in your monthly rent. You may just pay basic rent and take responsibility for your own food costs, or you may pay more in rent and eat meals with your host family.

If you choose to rent an apartment on your own or with roommates off campus, you will be responsible for all your living expenses. You may find student rentals that include utilities (heat, electricity, water), and some even include internet and cable. If not, you will be responsible for paying for them on your own and your food. If you live with roommates, you will split your utility, internet, and cable costs.

Living off campus also means you may have transportation costs to consider. You can walk or bike to school if you live close to campus. If not, you will need to pay for public transportation. You will also need to pay for transportation when you get groceries or do other things in the city.

With the above in mind, here is the average cost of the various living expenses in the U.S.:

  • Food – $2,500 per year
  • Electricity – $50 to $100 per month
  • Heat – $50 to $100 per month
  • Internet – $45 to $50 per month
  • Water/sewer/garbage – $50 to $75 per month
  • Transportation – $20 to $100+ per month

Again, these costs are average and vary depending on where you live. For example, you will pay more for a monthly bus pass in New York City than in Los Angeles or Chicago.

Health Insurance

As an international student in the U.S., you will need health insurance because medical care is expensive. You could be facing thousands of dollars in medical bills if you get sick or injured. But health insurance for international students will ensure you are covered and can rest assured you can get the care you need without having to choose between that and your education.

When you come into the country on a J visa, you will be required by law to get health insurance. If you come in on an F or M student visa, U.S. law does not require you to have health insurance, but your university or college might. Either way, you should have it for your own protection and peace of mind.

Many universities and colleges offer health insurance to their students. If you go this route, you are looking at an average cost of $700 and $1,000 per school year. The price will vary if you go with a private insurer, but averages between $30 and $140 per month.

Miscellaneous Costs

While we have covered the major costs of studying in the U.S., it is important to remember that there will be costs that come up that aren’t included here. You might want to mail home gifts to your family and friends. You might want to eat out, go to a movie every once in a while, do some sightseeing, or travel within the U.S. You might need to buy clothing or shoes while you are away (think: buying a winter coat and boots or season-appropriate clothing).

Whatever the case, it is wise to set aside at least $2,000 for miscellaneous expenses. After all, you don’t want to miss out on opportunities because you can afford them, and you don’t want to go without the additional items you need to live comfortably.

Ways to Cover the Cost of Studying in the U.S. for International Students

With so many expenses associated with studying in the U.S., it is essential to consider how you will comfortably cover them all. Fortunately, there are options. These include:

  • Savings – If you have money saved up, you can use this toward your expenses.
  • Family help – You may have family who can help you pay for your education in the U.S.
  • Grants and scholarships – There are grants and scholarships available to international students. Check with your university or college for more information.
  • International student loans – There are several loan options for international students, including cosigner and no-cosigner loans.
  • Work income – While studying in the U.S. on a student visa, you may be permitted to work to help cover the cost of living, depending on your visa status. If allowed, you can usually work up to 20 hours per week during the school year and full-time during the summer.

It Is Possible to Cover the Cost of Studying in the U.S. for International Students

While this might seem like a lot, it is possible to manage the costs of studying in the U.S.. The key is to plan, determine the specific costs associated with the school you are attending and the city where you are going to school, and then budget accordingly. There is a way to make it happen with so many financing options available.

Always remember that your university is there to help. The international student office has numerous resources and can help you find financing and accommodations. This way, you can be sure you have what you need to pay for your international educational experience and get the most out of studying abroad.

In most nations, a PhD degree is a minimum requirement for employment as an expert in one’s chosen profession or as a university professor in that field.

The United States of America is not only the most popular study destination in the world, but it also provides international students with a distinctive educational experience. Graduate programmes in the United States are generally more structured than those in other nations because of the major and minor degrees that enable in-depth training and independent study.

PhD studies in the United States are divided into three stages, the first of which is coursework that takes 1-3 years to complete, followed by a preliminary, comprehensive, or series of cumulative examinations.

The first phase of the examination focuses on the breadth of knowledge rather than depth. 2 to 8 years are normally required for the writing of a substantial and original addition to human knowledge in the form of a written dissertation.

Depending on the topic of study, a PhD programme requires 4 to 8 years of study after a bachelor’s degree , with students who already have a master’s degree taking a year or two less.

To pursue a Doctorate in the United States, international students must submit university-specific documentation. The following are some of the general eligibility requirements:

  • Application fee: Each university has its own online application and application price.
  • Academic transcripts : Students must submit transcripts from high school. Graduate transcripts in relevant subjects are required by the majority of universities.
  • GMAT or GRE Scores: Most courses, such as Business, Engineering , and Biotechnology , require GMAT or GRE scores.
  • LOR : Most courses require two or three professional recommendation letters.
  • Test results for English proficiency.
  • A motivational letter
  • PhD admission examination for research proposals
  • Interview: The personal interview is your finest opportunity to demonstrate your dedication, passion, and determination to pursue the PhD programme.

PhD in USA: Specializations

PhD programmes in the United States are available to Indian students in a range of subjects. Whether a student is seeking a Doctorate in science, business, or the humanities , the United States has it all. Nonetheless, some of the most popular PhD programmes in the United States are divided into two categories: STEM Courses and Non-STEM Courses

STEM courses are highly valued in the United States. The majority of overseas students intend to study STEM courses in the United States because the country grants a 24-month visa extension. Some of the most popular STEM courses include:

  • PhD in Natural Sciences
  • PhD in Engineering
  • PhD in Computer Science

Non-STEM courses are equally well-liked by international students. Non-stem courses are taken by 22% of Indian students. As a result, some of the most popular non-stem programmes are listed below.

  • PhD in Sociology
  • PhD in Psychology
  • PhD in Anthropology

Below is a list of some of the top colleges in the USA that provide PhD programmes.

Students should be aware of the estimated costs of living to survive in addition to the PhD tuition fees.

As a general rule, everyday costs incorporate convenience costs, utilities, transportation, and food costs. The average costs for each category are listed in the table below, although the cost of living varies depending on where a student chooses to live:

Many universities provide assistantships to their PhD students in terms of work and career possibilities. This type of work opportunity involves receiving a fee waiver or a stipend in exchange for completing a list of duties. The following are just a few of the assistantships:

  • Teaching Assistantship for Graduates
  • Assistant Administrative
  • Fellowships
  • Assistantship in research

In addition, the National Science Foundation administers a fellowship programme for graduate research. This federal award programme is only available to talented STEM graduates in the United States and offers them several incentives, including a $34,000 (INR 27.91 Lakh) annual stipend and a $12,000 (INR 9.85 Lakh) per year tuition price grant.

The Doctorate degree is awarded by 282 universities in the United States. Some significant variables to consider when selecting the ideal location for your studies include:

  • Program availability
  • University ranking
  • Faculty and staff reputation
  • Research facilities
  • Scholarships  and funding options offered by the university
  • Graduate employability rate
  • Tuition fees

The F-1 student visa allows you to work on campus up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during the holidays. Furthermore, as a PhD student, your Curricular Practical Training (CPT) comprises work assignments and opportunities that are required as part of your PhD programme.

Yet, if you are an extremely hard worker, you can study for a minimum Doctorate while working full-time in an unrelated career. But there’s a big if there. The risk of working full-time is that you won’t make much progress unless you put in a lot of effort. As a result, unless you have extremely modest ambitions for what you want to achieve with your degree, working full-time while studying for a Doctorate is often discouraged.

Obtaining a PhD generally costs more at some universities than others. The status of the student, including whether they are an in-state or out-of-state student, also influences this. For in-state students, the annual cost is roughly $12,410. Out-of-state or international students will pay more than $12,410 in tuition.

For a student obtaining a PhD, there are numerous employment prospects. He can apply for assistantship programmes run by the same university, instruct graduate students, and receive payment in return. In addition, individuals can sign up for a variety of administrative or research-based jobs.

Each person’s average cost of expenditure is unique. However, the estimate is within the range of $93,226 or more per year (including tuition, living expenses, food, etc.).

8 best PhDs that offer the highest stipends

best phds highest stipends

The best PhDs not only open the gates to knowledge but also offer some of the most generous stipends to help you achieve your dream. These stipends are not just numbers; they are the lifeboat allowing you to dive headfirst into your studies without worrying about the financial tides.

Think of the great minds that have treaded the PhD path before you – Marie Curie, Albert Einstein and Martin Luther King Jr. The secret to their success wasn’t just their brilliance; it was the support they received during their PhD journeys.

A stipend can be the catalyst for greatness, allowing you to focus on your research, collaborate with brilliant minds, and turn your academic dreams into reality.

best phds highest stipends

The best PhDs give you more than just a qualification. It acts as a catalyst to greatness.

Types of PhD stipends

When it comes to stipends, there are two main types: financial and non-financial. Financial stipends are a helping hand for students, given without needing any specific work in return.

They appear as financial assistance on your statement at the end of the year.

On the flip side, there are stipends given in exchange for the work you put in at the university. These aren’t considered financial aid; instead, they’re like salaries

You might be wondering if your stipend is subject to taxation. Well, it depends on the type. If it’s a financial stipend, it’s generally not taxable. It’s like a gift to help you out.

However, if your stipend is in exchange for your university efforts, like work or research, it’s considered income and is subject to taxation.

PhD stipends: It’s a package

Your PhD stipend is made up of several important components to support you through your academic journey.

The living stipend is the main part, covering your accommodation, food, transportation and other daily needs.

It’s the primary source of financial support, and how much you get can vary based on factors like location, school, major and cost of living.

The tuition waiver or fellowship is a significant perk considering the often hefty costs of a PhD education, especially in fields like Chemistry or other STEM subjects.

Health insurance is another crucial part of the package, ensuring you have access to affordable medical care to keep you healthy and productive.

Then there’s the research grant or funding, providing extra money for things like textbooks, research materials, and conference fees.

As you delve into your academic journey, you might also find yourself as a teaching assistant (TA) or research assistant (RA), gaining work experience and building valuable professional connections.

So, your PhD stipend isn’t just about the financial support – it’s a comprehensive package designed to nurture and propel you forward in your academic pursuits.

PhD stipends: More than just financial aid

It’s important to treat your PhD stipend as something more than just scholarship money or salary.

Consider investing in specialised training courses or workshops relevant to your field.

Use your stipend to enrol in programmes that deepen your expertise and introduce you to the latest trends.

Think of it as adding layers to your professional skillset, making you a sought-after expert in your field.

Another useful way to make good use of your PhD stipend is by attending conferences and networking events.

Allocate registration fees, travel and accommodation funds to immerse yourself in a sea of knowledge and connections.

Conferences are like treasure troves of insights, letting you learn from industry leaders and exchange ideas with peers.

Networking at these events can open doors to collaborations, job opportunities and a broader understanding of your field.

Your stipend is a golden ticket, allowing you to actively participate in your professional community and stay updated on cutting-edge developments.

Salary vs stipend

Your salary is like a regular paycheck you get for your job – it’s consistent, predictable and typically based on the hours you work or the tasks you complete.

It’s your stable income, like a steady river flowing into your bank account.

On the other hand, a stipend is more like a fund for a specific purpose, usually tied to education, research or training.

It’s not your regular 9-to-5 wage. It’s an allowance to support you in certain activities, such as pursuing a degree, researching, or attending professional development opportunities.

While a salary is your everyday bread and butter, a stipend is more like the extra toppings – there for a specific reason and not necessarily a routine.

So, who gets to hop on the stipend train? Usually, it’s candidates who are engaged in specific activities that need a bit of financial backing.

Students diving into research, interns honing their skills, or anyone pursuing specialised training are likely candidates.

Stipends often aim to support learning, growth or projects rather than being your everyday paycheck. It’s like a boost for those dedicating their time and effort to something beyond their regular work.

So, if you’re on a mission to deepen your knowledge, contribute to research or enhance your skills in a particular field, chances are you could receive a stipend.

When it comes to PhD programmes, the pay and stipends can vary . Generally, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) PhD programmes offer higher stipends than other fields.

For example, in the US, institutions like MIT and Stanford are known for generous stipends for STEM candidates. These stipends often cover tuition, living expenses and even healthcare.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about scholarships

A scholarship is a financial award granted to students to help with the cost of studying at university. Scholarships can vary in amount and can usually be used to pay for tuition fees, living costs, travel costs and academic materials among other things.

Scholarships can be awarded based on various criteria such as academic achievements, extracurricular involvement, research areas, leadership potential or financial need.

Scholarships are open to all students including domestic, European Union and international students and can be used for all levels of university study including undergraduate degrees, postgraduate degrees, research programmes, doctoral programmes and PhD programmes.

Where can you find scholarships for international students?

1. University scholarships: These are given by the university based on good grades, extracurricular activities or financial need. Universities will set their own criteria for applying to scholarships, and each university has its own list of scholarships it provides.

2. Academic or merit-based scholarships: These are for students who achieve high grades in school, either in a particular subject or in final exams and have a good academic record or GPA .

3. Performance-based scholarships: These are for students who are exceptional in areas such as sports, arts or music and are looking to pursue that at university.

4. External scholarships: These come from organisations outside universities, such as businesses, charities or higher education associations. Applications to them are usually separate from any university application forms.

5. Government scholarships: Most governments will have their own range of scholarships that will fund tuition fees and travel expenses (such as airfare) for international students wishing to apply to study in their country. Many will also be targeted at students from specific countries or regions.

6. Country/region-based scholarships: These can come from a range of sources including universities themselves, government departments, businesses or charities and will be aimed at students from a particular country or region.

What types of scholarships available for international students?

1. Partially funded scholarships: Unlike a full scholarship, these will cover only some of a student’s expenses. Therefore, students may need to find other ways to pay for the rest of their university expenses such as personal savings, help from families, part-time jobs or other scholarships. Some may offer funding for only one or two years of study.

2. Fully funded scholarships: These cover all expenses, including full tuition fees, accommodation and living costs throughout the university degree course.

3. Research grants: Research grants are financial awards given to university students so they can do in-depth studies and learn more about specific topics in their courses. These are offered globally and can be provided by institutions, government bodies or private organisations.

4. Work-study programmes: Some universities offer programmes in which students can work and gain experience while earning money for their studies.

5. Undergraduate scholarships: These are awarded to students pursuing an undergraduate degree.

6. Postgraduate scholarships: These are awarded for students pursuing postgraduate degrees, doctoral programmes and PhD programmes.

1. How do scholarships work?

These funds aim to support students to pursue their education by covering a portion or the entirety of tuition fees, living expenses or other educational costs.

2. How to apply for scholarships?

To apply for scholarships, students need first to find the right scholarship for their studies. They then need to complete the application forms and submit the required documents, which may include academic transcripts, letters of recommendation and personal statements. Each scholarship has its own application process, and it’s important to carefully follow instructions and meet deadlines.

Studying PhD in USA is a series of three phases , wherein, the 1st phase is a course work that requires 1-3 years for completion followed by a preliminary, a comprehensive examination, or a series of cumulative examinations.

In the first phase, examination focus is upon the breadth of knowledge instead of depth. For the composition of a substantial and original contribution to human knowledge in the form of a written dissertation, another 2 to 8 years are usually required.

Depending on the field of study, it takes 4 to 8 years of study after the bachelor's degree to complete PhD program; and it takes a year or two less to complete PhD for students who already have a master’s degree.

How much does it cost to do PhD in USA?

There are many scholarships dedicated for PhD programs at the universities of USA. But generally speaking, the cost of PhDs in USA varies between $28,000 to $55,000 annually depending on the program, specialisation and the university.

How to choose the right university in USA?

There are 282 universities in the United States that award the PhD degree. To choose the perfect place for your study, you need to consider some important factors, such as:

  • Program availability
  • University ranking
  • Faculty and staff reputation
  • Research facilities
  • Scholarships and funding options offered by the university
  • Graduate employability rate
  • Tuition fees

PhD requirements in USA

PhD admission requirements in US vary based on the university and the field of study. But in general, most universities in the US require the below from international students applying for PhD degree there:

  • Completed application form
  • Transcripts for your university degree or courses
  • Statement of Purpose
  • GMAT or GRE scores
  • Recommendation letters
  • English language test, such as IELTS or TOEFL
  • Application fee

Can I work while doing PhD in USA?

The F-1 student visa permits you to work on-campus for up to 20 hours a week during term-time and full-time during the holidays. Moreover, your Curricular Practical Training (CPT) as a PhD student includes work placements and opportunities that are a compulsory part of your PhD program.

However, practically-speaking, studying a minimal PhD can be done while working full time in an unrelated job, if you’re an extreme hard-worker. But that's a big if, though. The danger of working full time is that you won’t make progress without a continuous hectic effort. Thus, it’s generally unrecommend to hold a full-time job while studying a PhD unless you’ve very modest goals for what you intend to do with your degree.

Additional information about International Student Program reforms

Ottawa, February 5, 2024— Further information is being provided to clarify the announcement of an intake cap on new international study permit applications and other changes . International students make important contributions to Canada’s campuses, communities and economy; however, we have seen unsustainable growth in the International Student Program in recent years. These recently announced reforms will support sustainable population growth in Canada and improve system integrity, while helping to ensure that international students have a positive experience in Canada.

1. Cap and provincial attestation letter

As of 8:30 a.m. ET on January 22, 2024, most new post-secondary international students at the college or undergraduate level must provide a provincial attestation letter (PAL) from a province or territory with their study permit application. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will return any application received that does not include a PAL, unless otherwise exempt.

This attestation will serve as proof that the student has been accounted for under a provincial or territorial allocation within the national cap. Provinces and territories have been asked to have a plan in place for issuing PALs by March 31, 2024. The Government of Canada is working with the Government of Quebec to determine how the certificat d’acceptation du Québec pour études could serve as a PAL.

International students whose applications were received by IRCC before 8:30 a.m. on January 22, 2024, as well as those who have already been approved for a study permit and intend to travel to Canada for an upcoming program, do not need to take further action as a result of the cap.

Who needs a provincial attestation letter?

  • most post-secondary study permit applicants
  • most non-degree granting graduate programs (for example, certificate programs and graduate diplomas)
  • anyone else not included in the exception list below

Who doesn’t need a provincial attestation letter?

  • primary and secondary school students
  • master’s or doctoral degree students
  • visiting or exchange students
  • in-Canada study permit and work permit holders (includes study permit holders applying for an extension)
  • in-Canada family members of study permit or work permit holders
  • students whose application we received before 8:30 a.m. ET on January 22, 2024

2. Post-graduation work permit (PGWP) update for graduates of master’s degree programs

In recognition that graduates of master’s degree granting programs are excellent candidates to succeed in Canada’s labour market and potentially transition to permanent residence, we have made a change to the length of the PGWP, so that they have the opportunity to meet the required Canadian work experience in order to apply for their permanent residence.

Starting on February 15, 2024, a longer, 3-year post-graduation work permit will be available to those who are graduating from a master’s degree program that is less than 2 years and who meet all other PGWP eligibility criteria.

The length of PGWPs for programs other than master’s degrees will continue to align with the length of the study program, to a maximum of 3 years.

Who is eligible for a longer post-graduation work permit (PGWP)?

  • Graduates of programs that are at least two years in length at PGWP-eligible designated learning institutions are eligible for a 3-year PGWP, as are graduates of master’s degree programs less than 2 years in length.

3. PGWP eligibility for public-private partnership college programs

Some provinces allow public colleges to license their curriculum to be delivered by an affiliated private college. In these cases, students physically attend a private college, but graduate with a diploma from a public institution. Concerns have been raised with regard to the quality of education provided by these institutions, as well as the lack of sufficient student supports. The Auditor General of Ontario has also raised concerns about a lack of oversight into program quality and student services at these institutions.

As such, IRCC has made a change to restrict PGWPs for these institutions, anticipating that without the ability to apply for a PGWP, there will be a reduction in the number of international students enrolling in them.

Who is eligible for a PGWP after graduating from a public-private partnership college program?

  • International students currently enrolled will remain eligible for a PGWP if they meet other program eligibility criteria.

Who is not eligible for a PGWP after graduating from a public-private partnership college program?

  • New students enrolling in this type of program will not be eligible for a post-graduation work permit.

4. Changes to open work permit eligibility for spouses

In the coming weeks, eligibility for open work permits for the spouses and common-law partners of international students will be updated.

Who can get an open work permit?

  • Eligibility is limited to the spouses and common-law partners of students in graduate (master’s and doctorate) and professional degree–granting programs only.
  • Once these changes are in effect, spouses and common-law partners of international students seeking to extend their existing work permit will continue to be eligible under this stream.

Who will not be eligible for an open work permit?

  • The spouses and common-law partners of international students in other levels of study, including undergraduate and college programs, will no longer be eligible for an open work permit unless they already hold an open work permit under this stream.
