How to Write an Essay on How You Spent Your Summer Vacation

Last Updated: January 4, 2020

Writing an essay on how you spent your summer vacation is a classic way of starting a new school year. Think about this essay as an opportunity to tell a story about your summer while reflecting on the experiences you had. Choose a memorable moment you had this summer and start crafting your essay, giving as many details as possible.

Choosing a Topic

Step 1 Look back on mementos you kept from the summer.

  • These can also make nice visual aids if you are asked to present your essay.

Step 2 Make a list of the things you’ve done over summer vacation.

  • A list might be full of things like babysitting, attending a camp, working at a local store, taking a road trip, etc. This type of brainstorming can help you pick major events and other important moments from your summer.

Step 3 Write about a memorable moment.

  • For example, maybe you spent your summer traveling around Japan. Think of a memorable moment you had while traveling — maybe you walked up a mountain in the pouring rain — and write about this moment, adding lots of details.

Step 4 Create an outline...

  • For example, if you're writing about spending time at the beach, your outline could remind you to talk about the sandcastle building contest you entered, the dolphins you saw, and the ice cream you ate every day.
  • Details might be what the other sandcastles looked like, how far away the dolphins were, and what kind of toppings were on your ice cream.
  • Your outline is just to help you organize your thoughts — it can be written by hand or typed.

Crafting the Essay

Step 1 Focus on your feelings, interactions, and thoughts.

  • Instead of saying that you worked in a pet store, ate a PB&J sandwich, and walked home every day, talk about more than just your actions. You could talk about which pets are your favorites to work with, how it felt to eat the same sandwich every day, or what you thought about on your walk home.

Step 2 Use your 5 senses to explain your experiences.

  • Using sensory details like these will help your readers visualize and engage with your writing. These help your audience make your experiences feel real to them, even though they weren't there.

Step 3 Describe activities you did in each place you went.

  • For example, instead of saying “I went to the beach this summer,” try saying “I spent my summer swimming in the frigid water at Virginia Beach.” The more details you can provide, the more engaged your reader will be.

Step 4 Choose precise, descriptive adjectives.

  • Instead of saying “the burger was really good,” you could say, “the burger was juicy and filling.”

Step 5 Revise and edit your essay carefully.

  • Don't just rely on spellcheck. It will help catch some errors, but it will miss some things, too.
  • Ask a parent or other adult to read over your essay too, if you'd like.
  • Setting your essay aside for a little while will give you a fresher perspective when you go back to revise it.

Structuring Your Essay

Step 1 Start with a strong introduction.

  • Make sure your conclusion doesn’t just copy the introduction.

Are you required to write an essay about your summer vacation or your holiday break? This can be a tough assignment to tackle at first glance. But if you think about it, there are lots of interesting things that happen on your vacation that others might enjoy reading about. The key to success is to zero in on the experiences, people, or situations that made your vacation unique.

Summer vacation can be busy or lazy, funny or serious. You may have traveled with your family, worked every day, fallen in love, or coped with a difficult situation. To start your essay, you'll need to choose a topic and tone.

Family Vacation Essay Topic Ideas

If you traveled with your family, you may have some great stories to tell. After all, every family is crazy in its own way. Want some proof? How many Hollywood films have themes about family holidays or trips? Those films are popular because they enable us to glimpse inside the crazy family lives of others. Alternatively, you may have a more serious story to tell.

Consider these funny topics:

  • Why I'll Never Go Back to (insert place name)
  • How (insert name) Drove Me Crazy in Five Days
  • Traveling to (insert city) Then and Now
  • The Hazards of Traveling With a (person or thing)
  • Why You Shouldn't Take a Dog to (insert place)
  • I Left (insert city) But My (lost item) Stayed
  • Why I Couldn't Sleep in (place name)

If your family vacation involved something more serious, think about one of these topics:

  • The Love I Left Behind in (insert place)
  • Saying Good-Bye to (insert person or place)
  • Exploring (place's) Secrets
  • An Emotional Trip

Summer Job Essay Topic Ideas

Not everyone gets to spend the summer having fun; some of us have to work for a living. If you spent your summer at a job, chances are you met a lot of interesting characters, dealt with complicated situations, or even saved the day once or twice. Here are some ideas for summer job topics:

  • The Boss's Day Off
  • The Customer From Hell
  • What I Learned from My Customers
  • Why I'll Never Go Into the ___ Business
  • Six Things I Learned on the Job

How to Write the Essay

Once you've chosen your topic and your tone, think about the story you want to tell. In most cases, your essay will follow a typical story arc:

  • The hook (the funny, sad, or scary sentence that grabs the reader's attention)
  • The rising action (the beginning of your story)
  • The climax (the most exciting moment in your story)
  • The denouement (the aftermath or ending to your story)

Start by writing out the basic outline of your story. For example, "I started cleaning a guest's room and found that they'd left behind a wallet with $100 in cash. When I turned it in without taking a single dollar for myself, my boss rewarded me with a $100 gift certificate and a special award for honesty."

Next, start fleshing out the details. What was the room like? What was the guest like? What did the wallet look like and where was it left? Were you tempted to just take the money and turn in the wallet empty? How did your boss look when you handed her the wallet? How did you feel when you got your reward? How did others around you react to your honesty?

Once you've told your story in all its detail, it's time to write the hook and conclusion. What question or thought can you use to grab your reader's attention? For example: "What would you do if you found a wallet loaded with cash? That was my dilemma this summer."

How to Write a Summer Vacation Essay

Summer break is a great time to kick back, relax and enjoy yourself and, if you’re lucky, to go on an awesome trip! But how can you translate your amazing vacation into a narrative essay for English class or work it to fit a common application prompt? Here’s some tips to help you out:

Save Mementos From Your Summer

Even if you’re not the sentimental type, make sure to document your summer travels. Take pictures, write diary entries, save train stubs. This is the best way to ensure that you’ll remember your summer well enough to look back and write about it later.

Write an Outline Before Writing Your Essay

Regardless of whether you spent your summer break in Madison, Wisconsin or Madrid, Spain, you should plan out what you’re going to write before diving in. Make a list of what you’ve done over the summer so that you can later narrow down a focus for the essay itself. Keep in mind that the best essay topics aren’t always on the most exciting activities an essay about getting stuck in traffic on the way to the airport on the way to Denver could work better than an essay on hiking the Grand Canyon and looking out at the incredible view.

Be Specific

Since you’re going to keep a record of your trip and come up with an outline before writing your essay, you should be able to put some detail into your essay. Be as specific as possible when it comes to your word choice. If you’re talking about some gelato that you ate in Italy, don’t say that it was “delicious.” Instead, say that it was “creamy and chocolatey, with a note of vanilla.”

Focus on Feelings About Your Trip, Not What You Did

If you spent the summer on the beach in Cape Cod, you shouldn’t write about what you did. You should write instead about how you felt while there. An essay that reads “I went to beach, then had lobster for dinner” is not quite as exciting as one that goes, “As I went for a walk on the beach, I thought about how lucky I was to be able to enjoy nature.” Feelings translate better into text than events, and you should try to place those feelings into context.

Stick to Writing About a Small Moment

With any essay you write especially a short one it’s important to focus a narrow moment in time. Don’t write about your entire week in Paris. Instead, write about the moment you got lost in the city at midnight and fumbled your way home in the dark. You don’t have to pick a particularly glamorous moment from your trip, but you should pick one that meant something to you.

Edit Your Essay Carefully

The shorter the essay, the more important precision is. Regardless of length, make sure to carefully read over what you’ve written to make sure every sentence conveys the message you most want displayed. The editing process matters just as much as the writing process, even if it seems less so.

My summer holidays began on the first day, and I quickly became bored, mainly because every single one of my friends had left for elsewhere. Because of this, my parents decided to enrol me in a summer camp. My parents helped me enrol in one that our school was holding on its own.

I initially believed it would be useless and equally dull. To my amazement, I was mistaken. One of my favourite life experiences was summer camp. I had the opportunity to participate in various activities, and it was around this time that I first realised I had a gift for painting.

Despite there being no school, we rose early at 7 a.m. Every day, our trainers would teach us something new. I learned karate on the first day, which was entertaining and beneficial. In addition, I developed my skills in volleyball, table tennis, and basketball. My most anticipated portion finally arrived.

We learned how to paint and were taught unique techniques for mastering this art. I picked it up quickly and began to like painting. I will always be grateful to this summer camp for sparking my interest in painting and other activities.

Because it allows them to unwind and spend time with their loved ones doing activities they enjoy, many individuals look forward to the summer. For relaxation and amusement, many people take summer off from work. All institutions and schools are closed for the summer due to the heat. While some people would rather spend their entire day indoors, others would rather spend time outside. For kids, summer vacation could be a particularly memorable time of year.

They enjoy spending the vacations with their mom and dad, brothers, and sisters. Summer vacation is the happiest time in students’ lives because they had a break from attending school for a while.

These breaks are extremely important apart from getting away from the heat. Just after tests, students are completely drained and uninterested in learning; therefore, they require rest to improve their health and effectiveness after a hard year of study.

Everyone begins to learn something during the break, whether they are adults or children. Everyone has their way to commemorate the warm holiday; some like to go on a barbeque with their family, others travel to overseas nations, and still, others remain at home and appreciate it.

Most girls prefer to play racquetball, soccer, and other sports during the summer holiday, whereas boys like to play cricket on the empty ground. Several fruits can only be relished during the warmer months, and these fruits contribute to making the summer vacation more exciting. Drinking fresh berries smoothies and eating fresh fruit in the body produces vitality in the body. So I love my summer vacations.

Essay Sample on What I Did This Summer

how I spend my summer vacation essay

If there’s one word that every student loves to hear is “Vacations” because let’s be real, that’s the best time of the year, is it not? The days out almost endlessly before you with nothing like deadlines to meet and quizzes to prepare for on your mind. And if there’s someone who loves vacations more than anyone else, it’s me. And Oh boy, did I have the time of my life the last summer break I got and here is what I did this summer!

As soon as I got done with my exams, the durst thing I did was heave a huge sigh of relief and collapsed on my bed, exhausted from all the work I’d had to put in the semester. After a quick nap (Okay, not so short rest, I dozed off for four hours), I got up and immediately decided to start planning on how I was preparing to spend my vacations. I called my best friend Ali, with whom I had planned a trip since the school year, and immediately started planning and sorting out the details.

We agreed on a trip to the northern areas of the country and began preparations for it immediately. Two of our other very close friends and we were due to leave by the end of the week, and with barely five more days to go got packing immediately. We left by train on a hot Friday afternoon and reached a cool hill station away from the hot and humid city.

And saying that we enjoyed ourselves on that trip would be nothing short of an understatement.

From white water rafting to trekking on narrow mountain trails, we did it all. And before we knew it, our trip came to an end. With a rather sad heart but with numerous memories made to cherish, I came back rather unfortunate that the trip had come to an end but still rather happy that I still had a month and a half worth of lazing around left to do after spending probably the best two weeks on my life up north with my closest buddies.

Now here’s a fun fact about myself. I’m an avid football player, and with my university course load and those pesky exams, I hadn’t gotten much time to play the sport I was so dearly in love with. However, a few days after I returned, the club I played for had registered to participate in a local league, which I was excited about. And in a few days, the tournament kicked off with us cruising through the tournament’s group stages. In the meantime, I had also decided to start with a new hobby – Baking. However, needless to say, that enthusiasm of mine didn’t last very long (two burnt cakes long to be very precise), and thus I decided to focus my attention on some that were, let’s just say, more my cup of tea!

I also promised to make sure I was productive this summer break, so I decided to start a social internship, much to my parent’s delight. I filled the application forms, and the next thing I knew, I breezed through the interview and was due to start the following week. And let me tell you, that was probably one of the best experiences; working with kids at the hospital was an eye-opener for me as to his we take our health for granted. Seeing the smiles on the little kid’s face would leave me feeling accomplished from inside, and I found happiness in the fact that I was finally giving back to the community.

With my internship ending and the tournament coming to a close as well (which we managed to win, thanks to a thrilling penalty shoot-out in the final), my summer break had come to an end too. And as upset, I was at having to go back to my boring life of assignments and exams, I was very pleased that this summer was one of the finest I’ve ever had. I wish I get an opportunity to experience such times every single year.

Essay on How I Spent My Summer Vacation

The school session begins in March. It also earmarks the end of the spring season. As time passes, we enter the summer season in the next few months. The advent of summer brings hot days and a humid climate. It is really hard for the students to continue school in the scorching heat. Everyone seems to be exhausted due to hot summer days. It is then the school declares summer holidays so that the students and their parents can relax for a few days. Summer vacation is the time of happiness for students as their families plan a trip to a hill station to get rid of the heat.

India is a tropical country that suffers from extreme heat and humidity during March, April, May, and mid of June. The temperature ranges from 32 to 40°C in some states falling in the tropical region. Before the rainy season starts, the scorching sun exhausts everyone. Every day becomes unbearable to go out and meet with the responsibilities. This is why a summer vacation is so important for all family members. We decided to go to Sikkim, one of the best northeastern states in India as a getaway from the summer days.

Sikkim welcomed us with a soothing cool atmosphere. We breathed fresh air after a long time and felt rejuvenated on the very first hour in Gangtok. The place is situated amidst the lower ranges of the Himalaya. The small clouds were hiding the sunrays and gave us the best feel we waited for an entire year. My father booked a hotel with an excellent view. We received a warm welcome from the management and got our rooms to stay in. On that very day, we started to scout the different locations of the capital city.

The next day, we started unwinding our stressful life. We went to Yumthang, a serene valley known for flowers and yaks grazing on the meadows. The best time to visit this place is in March-April. Teesta river flows amidst this valley providing an excellent view. The panoramic view is adorned with snow-capped mountains and green flora. It was then I realized how beautiful Mother Earth can be. This valley is also known as the Valley of Flowers. Rhododendron puts a new colour to this heavenly place.

The next day we proceeded to Tsomgo Lake. It is one of the best glacial lakes in India that provides a beautiful scene. The entire place is covered with snow at a height of 12,400 feet above sea level. The winding roads with hairpin turns took us to this place. The journey was fascinating as we travelled on a car crossing one mountain after the other. The lake was calm and quiet with many people present in the location. We also took photos while riding yaks.

Our next destination was Zero Point. It is locally known as Yume Samdong. Located at a height of 15,300 feet above the sea level, this is the last place where people dwell. Beyond this point, there are no roads. It is a valley surrounded by mountains where three rivers meet. The snow here is quite deep. We had difficulty breathing in this place due to its height and lack of oxygen but it passed within a few minutes. It is true that this place resembles the beauty of Switzerland. This is where we enjoyed a lot on the vast snow-capped valley. We made snowballs and threw them.

It was a brilliant adventure. The journey was quite rejuvenating and refreshing for all the family members. We felt sad while returning from Sikkim. I will wait for the next summer vacation to visit this state again.

Narrative Essay: My Favorite Summer Vacation

your summer vacation essay

Each summer is beautiful for me because I spend it with my family. I am well aware that people my age spend their summer vacations with friends, partying all the time. But, after an entire year away from my family, I must admit I would always choose to spend a summer vacation with my family rather than friends. After all, my friends are what I get back to when the vacation time ends.

If someone asks me to choose one perfect vacation that is better than all the rest, I’d have to choose my trip to the Lakedale Resort at Three Lakes, Washington. The place was perfect for a modern camper – combining an Airstream trailer rental, canvas tent and log cabins, and surrounded by three marvelous lakes.

But, this is not my favorite summer vacation just because of the location. We have visited so many wonderful places during the summers, I am pretty sure some even looked better. What I do remember is the fun.

This is probably because of the three lakes, but the choices we had for activities were so many, we couldn’t possibly do everything before we went back home. I remember how much we fought over what we are going to do. My father wants us to do group activities when we go on summer vacation because ‘’It wouldn’t be a family vacation if we don’t stick together’’.

So, if you came and watched us on our family vacations in the summer, you would see two very bored parents just sitting next to their children when they are doing some kid activities. You could also see us trout fishing with them because my dad loves fishing.

This year that I am talking about, we fought for a long time about the trout fishing activity. We wanted to do canoeing, so we agreed that they will come with us on his, and we would go fishing with them. As it turned out, we had more fun on the fishing expedition than we had canoeing. For our dad, it was the opposite.

We fell in the water because this was our first time canoeing and we had no idea what we were doing. Both my sister and I were soaking wet because we fell exactly eleven times. Since my dad has done this in the past, they had a blast!

When the time came to go fishing, we were devastated by the idea that we’d have to spend an entire day looking for trout when there were so many things we could do. I honestly preferred just sitting near the fire pit on a picnic table all day, rather than waiting for a trout to catch my father’s bait.

However, luck was on my side that day. Fishing turned out to be such a fun activity, I am now convincing my dad to do it every summer. My dad was not so lucky. He spent over five hours just waiting and waiting, got sunburned and therefore had a fever all night. After a couple of hours of no fish caught whatsoever, he kept moving towards me in the hope that he will get lucky, too. But, the fish just seemed to run away from him and catch on my fishing rod instead.

The next day we decided to be a little less active since my father already had a tough night with the fever and the stress. We stayed near the cabin and joined those organized activities like cooking on a campfire and making tie-dyed shirts. We didn’t separate for even an hour and had the times of our lives.

This was way before I left home to go study in another city. For a family who cannot stand each other and fights all the time at home, it was a miracle how well we agreed and how fun our summer vacation was. Every summer we spend together is like this now, but now it is not such a strange thing. After over half a year of being separated and not living together, we would be happy if someone put us in one room for an entire month. That year, this was the strangest and most unexpected twist.

I will always remember that summer with my family. I don’t think I’ll be forgetting about the other places and vacations, too, but this is the summer when I understood that there is nothing more important than family. Whenever a friend jokes about my summer vacationing when I tell them I won’t be joining them this year too, I just remember that summer and everything seems right.

I don’t think I’ll ever envy my friends for spending their vacation partying. I will pity them for being away from their family once again because holidays and vacations are best spent with the people you love most. What I do know at this point is that when I have my own family, I will take them to that same spot and set the same rules as my father. I hope my fishing experience will be terrible as his, and they will fall in love with it.

As modern cars become ever more sophisticated pieces of technology, they’ve begun sharing information about their drivers, sometimes with unnerving consequences. Today my colleague Kashmir Hill explains what our cars now know and what this means for our lives.

It’s Monday, March 18th.

So, Kashmir, you’re a data and technology reporter. And you usually come on the show to tell us some very frightening new way that technology is going to affect our lives. This time, though, you’re coming on the show to talk about cars. Why cars?

Well, like many Americans, during the pandemic, I got a new car. And I hadn’t had a car since 1999 when I was in high school. And cars had changed a lot. They’ve gotten much better. They’re more sophisticated. I mean, they’re basically computers on wheels. But I know that when you connect things to the internet, it has the ability to record data about you, watch you, potentially spy on you if you don’t know what kind of data is being collected and sent out.

So you’re sitting in this new car looking around, thinking, OK, this stuff is probably spying on me.

Exactly. And I wondered what kind of data are cars collecting now and where are they sending it, who’s getting it. I just wanted to know who’s tapping into these cars.

OK. Over here.

Yeah. And this recording led me to a woman named Christine.

My name is Christine Delta Ogden and I’m from Bossier City, Louisiana.

Christine is a real estate agent in Louisiana. And for a while, she also sold medical supplies. So her car, a Mercedes, was really important to her work.

I had a class C 300. Actually my car was basically like my roving office. And as a rep, in that capacity, you have to live in your car. So it’s pretty much like your home away from home.

Christine had been married for 10 years. And her now late husband was a federal agent and abusive.

I kind of started losing my independence, I guess you could say.

And one night, he got violent with her and she decided to leave him. She got in her car and she drove five hours away to where her daughter lived. She ended up filing a police report against her husband for domestic violence. And she did not want to be in contact, but he’s texting her, he’s calling her. And then he started sending her messages that indicate he knows where she is in real time.

And there are a lot of weird incidents, like this one particular incident where she was on a work trip.

And I’m sitting in a parking lot —

And she was waiting for her colleague in her car.

And all of a sudden he shows up and backs up, rolls his windows down, and is looking at me.

He suddenly shows up in the parking lot.

And she had already made sure that he couldn’t track her phone. And then she realizes —

Oh, my God, and it just hit me in that moment that it has to be the car. It has to be the car.

That the only way it could be happening is that he is tracking her car.

And then I started thinking about, well, the only thing that is tied me to this car is going to be that Mercedes app.

So her Mercedes was connected to an app. Mercedes offers called Mercedes me.

So I get on there and there’s all this information on there that says, you can open your car doors —

And it’s one of these connected car apps you can use it to lock and unlock the vehicle, maybe turn it on remotely. And you can also find out the location of the car. And so that’s what her husband was doing. He was tracking the location of the car and, thus, seeing everywhere she went.

I had no idea he was actually watching every move I made. That car was a red light, you know, shining that, oh, she’s here, oh, she’s there. And he’s constantly checking that app looking to see where I was. We verified that.

So what does she do once she has this information?

So at this point, she already has a restraining order against him. So she lets the detective on her case know, hey, he’s tracking me. And —

That’s when we start calling Mercedes. And I explained to them.

She calls Mercedes because she wants to get his access to the car turned off, revoked.

I didn’t he was going to use the system to track everywhere I went. And that’s what he’s been doing, is tracking everywhere I go.

But you know what. Let me ask you a question. Let me ask you if

She is running into problems because he’s the owner of the car.

Did they say that the vehicle could be in your name? Or was it an agreement that the vehicle stays in his name?

The title is in his name. And Christine told me it’s a decision that they made, because he had better credit. But she is the one paying for the car.

I’ve got it in my papers that I get access to — I have access to the car. I’m the only one that’s ever really paid a note on this car.

And she actually had an order from the judge that had awarded her ownership of the car during divorce proceedings. She had this temporary restraining order. And so she’s telling Mercedes, look, I know he’s technically the owner of the car, but this is my car. A judge has said this is my car. I have a restraining order against him. He’s not supposed to be getting this access to me. Please, turn this off.

He’s violated several protection orders because he stalks me on this car. And it’s really hard to do anything.

And she calls repeatedly.

Because I know I can’t be the only woman that this happened to.

And they can’t help her.

The person who owned the car had the right to be connected to the vehicle. And Mercedes just didn’t seem to have any kind of protocol for what to do when this happens.

That is really, really remarkable. So what does she do?

So she eventually ends up taking the Mercedes to a mechanic. And she pays $400 for him to basically pull the device in the car that provides internet connectivity. So she disconnects her car. And it meant that she lost kind of navigation services in the car. She lost the ability to call roadside assistance, but she didn’t care. She said, I just don’t want him to be able to track me.

It’s pretty terrifying this story, Kash. And I have to say it’s pretty surprising to me that there wasn’t a way Mercedes could stop this. What did Mercedes say about this?

Mercedes said they could not comment on an individual customer. But this is not just Mercedes. There have been other reports of women this has happened to do with other car brands with Tesla. The detective in Christine case had actually had another case just like this with a Lexus. And I think what’s really troubling here is that cars are a lifeline for these women.

It’s literally how they are getting away from abusive situations. But because it’s connected to the internet it’s another place where they can be tracked and harassed. And this is the paradox of connected cars. They are no longer private spaces.

And what do we make about the fact that these cars have all this technology that now as we’re seeing can be exploited, but the car manufacturers don’t seem to have anticipated that?

Yeah. I mean, car manufacturers have been making cars for a long time, but they just started making these connected cars really just in the last decade. And car companies, when they have thought about safety, for example, in the past they’re thinking about seatbelts. They’re not thinking about data security-wise, privacy, and harassment.

All of these things that happen when you have humans combined with technology. These car companies are so new to this. And I don’t think they’ve kind of worked out the kinks in the way that the Googles and the Facebooks of the world have, to the extent that they have.

Right. It’s just not their thing yet, right? They have come into this technology space, this digital space, looking around and not practiced at how to treat data carefully and really what to do with it at all.

Exactly. And so these are new problems for carmakers, but they’re not new problems when it comes to technology.

And this was a case of a bad actor invading the privacy of a driver, but as I continued my reporting, I discovered that car companies themselves were invading the privacy of millions of drivers.

We’ll be right back.

So Kashmir, you said that these privacy issues in cars actually go beyond individuals exploiting technology, that in fact you discovered that car companies themselves were invading people’s privacy. Tell me about that.

Yeah. So for the story about how car apps were being used by abusers, I was spending a lot of time on car forums, places on the internet where people talk about their cars and their love of cars, and their issues with cars, on Reddit, on dedicated discussion boards. And I kept seeing the same story over and over again. And it was people whose insurance rates had gone up.

And they would ask the insurance agent, why did my insurance go up 20 percent, 50 percent? Or why can’t I get insurance? And the agent would tell them, you need to pull your LexisNexis Report. So LexisNexis, they’re basically a big data broker. And LexisNexis has a division called LexisNexis Risk solutions and historically it’s kept track of moving violations, speeding tickets, any accidents you’ve been in, whether you were at fault or not at fault.

And so these people go to LexisNexis, they ask for their files, and when it comes to them, the files are hundreds of pages long.

And in them, they are finding information about every trip they have taken in their cars over the previous six months, how far they drove, when the trip started, when the trip ended, how many times they hard braked, hard accelerated or sped.

And these people were shocked. And so they came to the online forum saying, why is this happening? Does anyone know why this is happening? And how do I turn this off?

OK, so what’s the answer? How was it happening?

So we talked earlier that cars can collect this really detailed data and that’s what was happening. The cars were collecting this data. This was happening to people who drove cars made by General Motors. General Motors was getting this data. And then General Motors was giving it to LexisNexis.

Wow. OK, so the car company itself was actually just handing it over?

Well, I don’t think they were just doing it for free. But yes, they were sharing and selling this data. And it wasn’t for everybody. It wasn’t everybody who drove a GM car that this was happening to. It was happening to a subset of people who had knowingly or unknowingly, in some cases, been enrolled in something called Smart Driver.

And what’s Smart Driver?

So Smart Driver is a feature offered by GM? It’s called OnStar Smart Driver. And it’s supposed to be a program to help you be a better driver. And you can collect digital badges for being a good driver, like brake genius and speed-limit hero. And you get some feedback, take it easy on the brakes, you know. Don’t speed up so much.

Make sure you’re leaving room in front of your car so you’re not going to hit the person in front of you, like don’t tailgate.

So it’s a little bit like one of those exercise apps, like, great job, you ran five miles. Nice braking there or on the contrary.

Yeah. It was that gamification of real life. Right? Get a good score, be a good driver. But what people who turn this on didn’t realize was that there was something buried in the privacy policy that no one reads that said that they could share that data with third parties. And the third parties that they were sharing it with were LexisNexis and another data broker that works with the insurance industry called Verisk.

So some kind of vague fine print lets them turn this driving game into a data-harvesting machine essentially.

Yeah. So when I talked to GM, the spokesperson said that people could turn this on in the vehicle app or at the dealership when they bought the car. So it seemed possible that this was quietly being turned on at the dealership by salespeople. And I found this company manual that said that salespeople could earn bonuses from GM by getting drivers to enroll in OnStar connected services, including Smart Driver.

I mean, there’s something kind of creepy about it, right? Like these people were driving around. They had no idea that every move they made, including when they braked, when they turned, how fast they approached a stop sign, all of that was kind of being watched. It feels like a fundamental violation of privacy in your own car.

One of the drivers I talked to said, it felt like a betrayal. Like he had no idea this information was getting collected and that it would be shared in this way that cost him financially, like his insurance went up. And he said, I’m a safe driver, I’ve never been in an accident. I don’t even kind of understand how they’re judging me on this. So it was really confusing to the people this was happening to.

And how much were their rates actually going up? Like give me an example.

So one Cadillac driver I talked to in Palm Beach, Florida, said that he actually got denied by seven auto insurance companies. And he wound up paying double what he was paying before for his auto insurance.

That is a huge increase. How typical was that? Do you have a sense of that?

It’s hard to tell. It was just a lot of posts on these different forums. Some people said 20 percent. Some people didn’t know how much it affected their insurance. But, yeah, it seemed to range from — I saw 20 percent. I saw 50 percent. And I saw people who said their insurance doubled.

And what was the scope here in terms of companies? I mean, was this just GM?

So I was only seeing people really explicitly complaining about GM cars that had this experience of my insurance went up, I went to LexisNexis, I found my details. But then when I started looking into this, I saw that actually a lot of different automakers are starting to do a form of this. And some of the automakers that said, this is about safety, we’re trying to help people be better drivers, often they have a driver score or driver feedback, or road score in their app. And sometimes it’s a data broker that’s actually giving you the score in the app, not your automaker.

OK. So they say it’s for safety. Does that explanation hold water?

So a version of this has been going on for a long time. There’s something called usage based insurance, where you with your insurance company say, OK, I’ll put a dongle in my car or I’ll put your app on my smartphone and I’ll let you monitor my driving. And those programs have actually been quite successful.

I talked to one expert and he says that when people are knowingly doing this, being observed, that the impact on safety is enormous, that these people become better drivers. But that doesn’t work if you don’t know that you’re enrolled in this program. If you don’t know that how you drive is going to impact your insurance, then you’re not going to improve your driving. There’s no safety benefit here.

At the same time, there’s this question of what does this data even mean? What is hard breaking? What is hard acceleration? How does it reflect how risky a driver you are? I was actually thinking about this a couple of days ago, because I was driving home late at night and a herd of deer just suddenly sprinted across the road, and I had to slam on the brakes. And I saved my car insurance company a bunch of money because I didn’t hit the deer and damage my car. But I wonder in the data, do I look like a terrible driver who was tailgating somebody and then had to slam on the brakes?

I mean back to your point earlier in the show, these car companies are kind of tech companies and training, right? And I imagine that they will soon learn some of the lessons that other tech companies have had to learn, which is surveilling your customers, collecting troves of data. That doesn’t go unnoticed for long periods of time. I mean, it will have a response.

People are not happy about this. And I’ve been watching those — I’m still in those online car forums and I see people reacting to this story and they’re saying, oh, my God, I just checked my app and I’m signed up for this. I can’t believe it. They’re saying, I’m not going to buy a GM car, I’m not going to buy any of the cars that are mentioned in this article.

But the thing is there’s lots of different automakers that are doing this. I talked to Senator Ed Markey about this. Senator from Massachusetts. Senator from Massachusetts. He’s been talking to car makers asking them, what data are you collecting about people? Who are sharing it with? And they had sent him some very evasive answers. But he said, when I described to him what was happening with GM, he said, that sounds like a violation of the law that protects consumers against unfair and deceptive business practices.

And a couple of days after my story came out, there was a class-action lawsuit filed against General Motors and LexisNexis in the Southern District of Florida.

So this is really a moving target, in a way, a new social problem. I mean, you started digging into the privacy implications of these cars and you found pretty quickly two very egregious examples of ways car drivers’ privacy is being violated, which kind of makes me wonder, what else is going on with these cars that we don’t even know about yet? Right. Honestly, this is what I have been seeing in the last decade or so that I’ve been reporting on privacy and data collection. At first, I was writing about Facebook and Google, but now everything is internet connected. It’s not just cars. So many of the products we get, your TV, your vacuum, sometimes your bed, your toothbrush.

They want to put a Wi-Fi connection on everything. And it can be really convenient. It can give us information remotely. We can turn things on and off, our lights, but once you have this internet connection, it means people can get at these devices who previously couldn’t. And it means that things that don’t look like a camera, that don’t look like a recording device, are. They’re watching you and they’re gathering information about you. And it’s this big question of who’s getting it and how is it going to be used? Kashmir, thank you.

Thanks for having me on, Sabrina. [MUSIC PLAYING]

Here’s what else you should know today. In a highly anticipated ruling, a judge overseeing the election interference case against Donald Trump and his allies in Georgia decided on Friday that the Fulton County district attorney Fani Willis could remain in charge of the prosecution, but only if her former romantic partner withdrew from the case.

The ruling essentially meant the case against Trump and his allies in Georgia could proceed. Since the judge could have removed her and her entire office from the prosecution, but chose not to. The decision revolved around a defendant’s claim that Willis should be disqualified because her romance with her office’s lead lawyer, Nathan Wade, had given her an inappropriate financial stake in prosecuting Trump.

Within hours of the ruling, Wade resigned from the case. But even as the judge spared Willis, he refused to fully vindicate her. The ruling described her decision to date Wade and take multiple vacations with him as “a tremendous lapse in judgment that had raised a significant appearance of impropriety“.

And in Russia, Vladimir Putin garnered 88 percent of the vote in the presidential election held this weekend, according to Russian election authorities. His win was a foregone conclusion as the Kremlin had blocked any real competition. In a quiet show of opposition, Russians formed long lines at polling stations in several major cities at 12 on Sunday at the request of the team of the now deceased opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

If Putin serves to 2030, the end of his new term, he will have the longest tenure of any Russian leader since Catherine The Great in the late 1700’s. My dad is billionaire Steve Ballmer. Here's what it was like growing up rich — and being kind of ashamed of it.

I don't spend money as lavishly as I could; I'm aware of hedonic adaptation.

This as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with 29-year-old Pete Ballmer, a standup comedian living in San Francisco and one of the sons of billionaire and former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. It has been edited for length and clarity.

Up until I was in late elementary school, my understanding was that my family was rich, but I didn't know that we were globally and historically rich .

I knew that my dad was a big guy at Microsoft , and I remember a kid asking me how many bathrooms my house had. Another kid randomly asked me, "Does your mom drive a Mercedes?" And I was like, "No, she drives a Ford Fusion."

Growing up, we didn't get more expensive Christmas presents than most of the other upper-middle-class kids I knew. I got the new Gameboy one year, and in high school, I asked for a bench and a set of weights. Another year, my parents got us a ping pong table that we set up in the basement.

My parents hated seeing us make stupid purchases

Their approach toward money, in broad strokes, was: If it's something that you ultimately need, we can buy that for you. They both hated seeing stupid or unnecessary purchases being made, so the implicit rule was don't be wasteful; be smart about what you spend your money on.

For example, I started playing lacrosse in fourth grade and asked my mom for a nicer lacrosse stick. She was like, "No, you just started playing. You don't need the nice lacrosse stick."

I got the less-nice lacrosse stick.

I'm sure I asked my parents for some money here and there, but it was never, "Just ask us, and we'll get you the money." I mean, I didn't really care about what I was wearing, and my brothers and I were fine with driving our dad's old '98 Lincoln. We had an Xbox, and I was eating a lot of Chipotle with my friends. (I drove the neighborhood carpool and got paid in Chipotle gift cards — it was awesome.)

What more does a teenage boy even need at that point?

We didn't really talk about money

There were some indications that we were rich. Our family took really nice vacations, but as a kid, there was a disconnect between things and how much they cost. I just thought, "Oh, I guess we're in Japan, now."

For both my mom and my dad, having a lot of money was a relatively new experience, as was raising children. They raised us in line with how their parents raised them, and since they didn't grow up talking about wealth, they didn't talk about it with us, either.

It was nice to just be a kid and not really think about it, but as I grew up, I started feeling pretty uncomfortable that I was in a wealthier family than any of my peers. I didn't like that people had presuppositions of what I was like purely based on that.

My parents had an attitude of " rich kids are too much, and we don't like that," which was in some ways harmful since I was a rich kid.

But I started to derive pride from the fact that I wasn't as spoiled as I could be, that I didn't have gobs of money thrown upon me. People would say nice things about the way my brothers and I approached money.

I worked summer jobs and internships to save up

In elementary school, I got an allowance of $10 a week. I obviously didn't have any real need for it, and I'd forget to collect it from my mom probably over half the time.

Middle school is when I started to actually want things that were more expensive. I read about a new phone, the Palm Pre, and wanted to buy it. My parents agreed that they would pay for the phone plan if I paid for the phone. I worked as a caddy at a golf course near our house and saved up enough to buy it.

The summer after 9th grade, I started a landscaping company with my friends. It's funny to look back on — we were just a bunch of well-to-do suburban children. Let's just say we weren't doing as good a job as your average landscaping company might.

I also did a couple of software engineering internships during high school and college, which I got — I feel it's important for me to say — without connections.

My parents paid for all of my tuition and board in college, which is a lot of money. I used the money I saved from my internships to spend on things like meals out at restaurants, drinks at bars, occasional new clothes, and concerts.

After graduating, I borrowed $1,000 from my parents for an international trip I'd planned with some friends. But that wasn't enough to cover it, so I borrowed another $1,000 from one of my roommates because I didn't want to ask my parents for more money. The experience of not wanting to go back to your parents to ask for more is pretty human and universal; you don't want to be viewed as irresponsible.

Receiving an inheritance at 25

After college, I never considered not having a job, so I became a product manager at a game development company.

Then I inherited a sum of money from my grandfather when I turned 25. He had worked his way up to middle management at Ford and put the money he saved into Microsoft stock, which did pretty well and ended up being worth hundreds of thousands of dollars by the time I received it.

When I first heard about it, I was a junior in college. My initial reaction was that I would decline it — I was still pretty uncomfortable with my family's wealth and figured I could get a pretty high-paying job in tech and wouldn't need their money.

But then I turned 25, and I didn't decline the money; in retrospect, that would have been a very silly decision.

I'd also started doing standup comedy in college and continued doing it on the side while I worked. After about four years of working as a product manager, I quit to pursue comedy full-time.

I'm now a paid regular at some comedy clubs in the Bay Area, and I've also done some festivals. I do around five shows a week in addition to an open mic or two, and I produce Don't Tell Comedy shows.

Between what I get from my inherited investments and my income from comedy, my money has remained pretty stable because of my spending habits.

I don't make many large purchases

I don't make many purchases that are over a few hundred dollars. I don't buy first-class plane tickets , for example, and I don't get new or pricey clothing very often. I bought a new jacket recently that was $120 or something.

I live in a two-bed, one-bath apartment with my girlfriend, and it's perfect for our purposes; it's no bigger than it has to be. I order food on Uber Eats more often than I probably should, but I also cook a lot and eat oatmeal pretty much every day. That's not a money-saving thing; I just friggin' love oatmeal.

I drive a 2015 Ford Focus that my parents bought for my younger brother after he totaled our dad's old '98 Lincoln in high school. I pay an embarrassingly high amount of money for my parking spot, though, because street parking in San Francisco can be tough, and I often leave a lot of expensive AV equipment in my car.

I also pay out of pocket for my healthcare, go on pricey trips like Burning Man , and make fairly substantial donations to causes that are significant to me.

My financial management moment-to-moment is just kind of pragmatic. I review my credit card statement on a monthly basis and kind of go, how are we looking? Is this all stuff that made sense for me to buy?

It feels gross to ask parents for money at this age

Neither of my brothers nor I have at any point asked my parents for a notable sum of money , and at no point have our parents given us a notable sum of money. Personally — and not knocking anyone else — that would feel kind of gross and pathetic. (Instead, I have the much more noble position of having inherited from my grandparents.)

There are different ways to approach being born into wealth . On one hand, you get kids like me who were kind of ashamed of it and downplayed it. The criticism here is there's some dishonesty, like I'm misrepresenting a huge thing about me if I'm not talking about it and letting people know.

I don't really see it as dishonest, though, because people are multifaceted and much more complex than the sum of where they grew up. Admittedly, it sometimes sickens me to know I fall into the trust-fund artist stereotype, but I value authenticity a lot — I just do my best to be authentically myself in my interactions with people.

The other camp of hyper-wealthy children are the ones who've never had any shame about it and whose parents were a lot more open with giving them money. They'll flaunt the money and ask their parents for a Range Rover as a grown-ass adult.

I don't like that approach as much. I think it's better to establish yourself and try to be your own person independent of the money.

People who have a lot of money can still be unhappy

As we're all older now, our family has started talking more proactively and intentionally about money.

We've talked about what our wills might consist of, what happens to the Clippers — which my dad owns — once my parents have passed, how having the money affects what we choose to do career-wise, how the money has or has not "corrupted" us, and the wariness we all have around money's general ability to do that to people.

Obviously, money can do a lot for a person. Growing up with a comfortable life (and being around people who had comfortable lives), I both experienced for myself and observed in others the fact that you can very much still be unhappy while having a lot of money.

I know I could have some nicer things, but I try to be aware of hedonic adaptation — I know I'd eventually adapt to those lifestyle choices as a new baseline and possibly go down a slippery slope of a more opulent life, which ultimately leads nowhere.
