Creative Writing has been a vital part of the Vanderbilt English Department for nearly a century, since the poet and critic John Crowe Ransom's famous class which he called "a practical course in writing various types of prose, including the short story." Notable writers who have studied at Vanderbilt include Robert Penn Warren, Randall Jarrell, Peter Taylor, Ellen Gilchrist, and James Dickey. Vanderbilt's writing tradition continues today with the English Department's Master of Fine Arts Program.

The M.F.A. at Vanderbilt is a three-year program requiring four semesters of graduate work in writing workshops and seminars. Students enroll in a workshop and two seminars during each of their first three semesters. Then during the final semester, they work intensively on a creative thesis. The thesis is a substantial piece of creative writing: a novel, a collection of short stories or creative non-fiction, or a collection of poems. Second-year students may teach an introductory creative writing workshop in their genre. Every student in the MFA program receives full-tuition remission, health insurance, and a stipend. Students are also eligible to receive travel grants to attend the AWP Conference (and other academic conferences).

Each semester the Gertrude Vanderbilt and Harold S. Vanderbilt Visiting Writers Series brings writers to campus to read from their work and visit classes. We’re proud of our readings series, an extraordinary program that gives our students, faculty, and the Nashville community a chance to meet and talk with some of the best writers of our day. A survey of some of our visiting writers in recent years shows the depth and reach of Vanderbilt’s reading series, a source of inspiration and delight for our creative writing students in particular and area residents in general. From 2017 to 2021, visitors included:

Each semester, the Gertrude Vanderbilt and Harold S. Vanderbilt Visiting Writers Series brings to campus distinguished writers who read from their work and discuss writing with students. In some years, a distinguished writer in residence visits for a semester and teaches a workshop in his or her genre.

The inaugural issue of Nashville Review, a literary journal edited by students in the MFA program, appeared in Spring 2010. The online journal pays contributors to publish fiction and nonfiction, poetry and comics, music (lyrics and tunes) and paintings, drawings, and photography as cover art. The Review also publishes interviews with established writers, artists, and musicians, along with essays, reviews, and translations. Kate Daniels

Kate Daniels received her MFA from Columbia University’s School of the Arts. She is the author of six collections of poetry: The White Wave, The Niobe Poems, Four Testimonies, A Walk in Victoria’s Secret, Three Syllables Describing Addiction (2018) and In the Months of My Son’s Recovery (2019). The White Wave received the Agnes Lynch Starrett Prize for Poetry. Among her honors are the Bunting Fellowship at Harvard (now known as the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study); the Guggenheim Fellowship in Poetry; two Best American Poetry selections; the Pushcart Prize; and election to the Fellowship of Southern Writers. Her poems have been anthologized in more than seventy five volumes, and have appeared individually in journals such as American Poetry Review, Critical Quarterly, the Oxford American, Ploughshares, and the Southern Review. She has also edited a volume of poems by Muriel Rukeyser and co-edited Of Solitude and Silence: Writings on Robert Bly. She is the Edwin Mims Professor of English at Vanderbilt. An affiliate faculty member in Medicine, Health, and Society, she also teaches writing at the Baltimore Washington Center for Psychoanalysis, and conducts community workshops on Writing for Recovery for people whose lives have been affected by addiction.

Tony Earley

Tony Earley is the Samuel Milton Fleming Chair in English at Vanderbilt. He received his M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Alabama and has taught at Vanderbilt since 1997. He has been named one of the "twenty best young fiction writers in America" by The New Yorker and one of the "Best of Young American Novelists" by Granta.

His books include a collection of short stores, Here We Are in Paradise: Stories (1994); a novel, Jim the Boy (2002); and a collection of personal essays, Somehow Form a Family: Stories That Are Mostly True (2001). His stories have also appeared in The New Yorker, Harper's, Esquire, and Best American Short Stores. His work has been widely anthologized as well as translated into a number of different languages.

At Vanderbilt, he teaches beginning, intermediate, and advanced fiction workshops as well as a seminar on Hemingway and American fiction.

Rick Hilles

Rick Hilles is the author of Brother Salvage (winner of the 2005 Agnes Lynch Starrett Prize, and named 2006 Poetry Book of the Year by ForeWord Magazine) and A Map of the Lost World (February 2012), listed as a “Top Pick” on Library Journal’s website; both with the University of Pittsburgh Press. Among his honors are a Whiting Writers’ Award, the Amy Lowell Poetry Traveling Scholarship, and fellowships from the Camargo Foundation (Cassis, France), the Stegner Program at Stanford, the Institute for Creative Writing at U.W.-Madison, and the Fulbright Program. His poems, translations, and essays have appeared in Boston Review, Field, Harper’s, Literary Imagination, Michigan Quarterly Review, Poetry, The Nation, The New Republic, and Salmagundi. He is currently working on two poetry manuscripts: a book-length poem called, The Invisible Thread, substantial portions of which have appeared in Hudson Review, Literary Imagination, and Missouri Review; and The Empathy Machine, individual poems from this collection have appeared in American Literary Review, Connotations Press: an Online Artifact, Five Points, Kenyon Review, Ploughshares, and have accompanied performances by the Nashville Sinfonietta, conducted by Dean Whiteside.

Nancy Reisman

Reisman is the author of the novels Trompe L’Oeil and The First Desire, a NY Times notable book and winner of the Goldberg prize from the Foundation for Jewish Culture, and the story collection House Fires, an Iowa Short Fiction Award winner. Her stories have appeared in many journals and anthologies, among them Tin House, SubTropics, Narrative, Yale Review, Glimmer Train, Five Points, Best American Short Stories, O’Henry Award Stories, and Jewish in America. She has received fellowships and awards from the Tennessee Commission for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, MacDowell, the Fine Arts Work Center, the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing, and the Bogliasco Foundation.

Sandy Solomon

Sandy Solomon’s book, Pears, Lake, Sun, which received the Agnes Lynch Starrett Prize from the University of Pittsburgh Press, was published simultaneously in the UK by Peterloo Poets. Her work has appeared in a number of magazines and journals in the US and the UK, including, most recently, The New Yorker, Plume, Vox Populi, and Southampton Review. In the past, other poems have appeared in The New Yorker, New Republic, The Times Literary Supplement, Poetry Review, Partisan Review, Threepenny Review, The Gettysburg Review, Chelsea, Seneca Review, The Southern Review, The Virginia Quarterly Review, Harvard Magazine, Antioch Review, Poetry East, Ploughshares, Poet Lore, Pained Bride Quarterly, Prairie Schooner, among others. Solomon’s poems have appeared in a number of anthologies including Women’s Work, Orpheus and Company: Contemporary Poems on Greek Mythology, and A Breathless Hush, The MCC Anthology of Cricket Verse.

Lorrie Moore

Lorrie Moore is the author of the short story collections Self- Help, Like Life, Birds of America, and Bark; three novels, Anagrams, Who Will Run the Frog Hospital?, and A Gate at the Stairs; and a children’s novel, The Forgotten Helper. She has won the O. Henry Award, The Irish Times International Fiction Prize, the Rea Award for the Short Story, the PEN/Malamud Award for Short Fiction, and the Finn Zinklar Award for the Short Story given by the Karen Blixen Society in Copenhagen. She has been a finalist for the Orange Prize, The PEN Faulkner Award, The National Book Critics' Circle Award, The Story Prize, and the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award. Her reviews and essays have appeared in such publications as The New York Review of Books, The New Yorker, The Yale Review, and The Atlantic, and a collection of her non-fiction was published in 2018. Her collected short fiction was also published in the Everyman's Library series in 2020 with an introduction by Lauren Groff. A recipient of an NEA, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Lannan Fellowship, and a Pushcart Prize, she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2001 and to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2006, where she is currently a member of the Board of Directors. Her work has been published in over a dozen languages.

Major Jackson

Major Jackson is the author of five volumes of poetry, most recently The Absurd Man (Norton: 2020). His other books include Roll Deep, Holding Company, Hoops and Leaving Saturn, recipient of a Cave Canem Poetry Prize. His edited volumes include Best American Poetry 2019, Renga for Obama, and Library of America’s Countee Cullen: Collected Poems. A recipient of fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Guggenheim Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University, Jackson has been awarded a Pushcart Prize, a Whiting Writers’ Award, and has been honored by the Pew Fellowship in the Arts and the Witter Bynner Foundation in conjunction with the Library of Congress. He has published poems and essays in American Poetry Review, The New Yorker, Paris Review, Ploughshares, Poetry London, Orion Magazine, Yale Review, among other fine publications. His poetry has received critical attention in The New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, and on National Public Radio's All Things Considered. Major Jackson is the Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Professor of English. He serves as the Poetry Editor of The Harvard Review.

Didi Jackson

Didi Jackson is the author of MOON JAR (Red Hen Press, 2020), a finalist for Alice James Book Award, Lexi Rudnitsky Book Award, and Autumn House Book Award. Her poems have appeared in The New Yorker, New England Review, Kenyon Review, and Ploughshares among other journals and magazines. Her chapbook, Slag and Fortune was published by Floating Wolf Quarterly (2013). She has had poems in Best American Poetry, Academy of American Poets’ Poem-a-day, The Slow Down with Tracy K. Smith, and most recently Together in Sudden Strangeness: America’s Poets Respond to the Pandemic. She serves as a contributing editor for Green Mountains Review and currently teaches creative writing at Vanderbilt University.

Creative Writing Panels

Love and Vera follows Natalie, a young woman working as a receptionist in a doctor's office, as she navigates her relationships in the wake of her mother's death. Grappling with the loss proves difficult for Nat, and she seeks escape in an affair with her boss until she realizes that her mother has left her with one last lesson in the form of an old friend.

Kaitlin Joshua, Class of 2021

Bio: Kaitlin Joshua is a junior double majoring in Economics and Medicine, Health, and Society, and minoring in Creative Writing. In both her writing and her research, she is interested in the relationships, wellbeing, and social networks of and among women and girls. She is from Madison, Mississippi.

“Common Cold”

While caring for a significant other, the narrator is reminded of being sick as a child, and recalls remedies her mother used to soothe her. The nostalgia brought on by this memory prompts the narrator to consider that an act as simple as caring for someone while they are ill (be it a friend, child, or romantic partner) can evoke a universal type of love that may be carried from childhood to adulthood.

"The Ripper" is an inventive, feminist take on a classic murder mystery that has baffled the world for centuries: the "Jack the Ripper" murders. This story takes readers on a riveting journey through 19th-century London that explores class, sexism, prejudice, and the psychology of one of the world's most infamous serial killers.

Katie Radulovacki, Class of 202

Bio: Katie Radulovacki is a junior majoring in MHS with a minor in Creative Writing. When she isn’t presenting at the Undergraduate Writing Symposium, she enjoys playing ultimate frisbee with VUDU (the Vanderbilt womxn’s team), volunteering with VSVS, conducting research in the BSIRL lab, and leading tours as a Vanderbilt tour guide.

“The Disappeared”

Dr. Cecily Clarke is alone at American Outpost 58. The rest of the known civilization, including Cecily's girlfriend, lives at the Base in Greenland. On Cecily's last day at the outpost, she makes a startling discovery that changes the course of her life and the lives of those at the Base.

Kate Louthain, Class of 2022

“wilt the flowers, devour the bones”.

Set during the fall of the Spanish empire in Latin America, a group of native Hondurans follows a group of colonial Spaniards into the rainforest as they search for a lost city rumored to contain riches.

Lauren Furman, Class of 2020

Bio: Lauren is a senior from Alamo, California double majoring in Creative Writing and MHS. When she is not studying, she enjoys hiking and volunteering at the local women’s shelter.

The 2023 Spring Vanderbilt Undergraduate Creative Writing Symposium and Arts Showcase was held April 13 to celebrate a diverse range of undergraduate talent across fields and disciplines at the university. A collaboration between the Vanderbilt Writing Studio and the Office of Experiential Learning and Immersion Vanderbilt, this year’s symposium featured the highest-ever number of submissions and attendees.  

The Arts Showcase exhibited an array of student works, including paintings, fiber arts, photography and short films, all on public display in Joe C. Davis Memorial Hall. The student creators, each mentored by university faculty and staff, discussed their projects with attendees throughout the afternoon. The two-in-one event also included the Creative Writing Symposium, which showcased a series of panels highlighting student authors and their creative works of fiction, nonfiction and poetry. The student panelists also shared reflections on their writing processes and inspirations.  

“Being selected for the [symposium] was a very validating experience, especially with how solitary of an activity writing is,” said Jessica Cobbinah, a senior double majoring in secondary education and English. “A lot goes into my writing process, but that isn’t necessarily evident on the page, so I enjoyed getting the chance to discuss that aspect. My favorite part was getting to speak with my fellow presenters and hearing about how our approaches to writing align and vary.”

Vice Provost of Arts and Libraries Tracy Denean Sharpley-Whiting also attended the symposium and spoke to students and community members present, applauding the student presenters on their accomplishments and emphasizing the central place of creative endeavors within a liberal arts education.  

For many students, like senior chemistry major Hyoungjin Lee, the symposium was a chance to share creative passions outside of their fields of study.  

“I was thrilled to share my work ‘Paths’ at the Vanderbilt Undergraduate Writing Symposium and Arts Showcase, where readers could immerse themselves in my photos and poems,” Lee said. “I’m truly grateful to Vanderbilt for providing me the opportunity to explore different cultures and perspectives, which have greatly reshaped my mental framework.”

The title of Jackson’s new collection is echoed in his poem “Making Things,” where he says, “I want to be/all razzle-dazzle before the dark-cloaked one/arrives for a last game of chess.”

The recent visit of poet Major Jackson occasioned a “double Major,” a conceit Jackson would appreciate, for that is the title of one of his verses.

On Feb. 17 and 18, Major did double duty, headlining the 12th Night Revel, the annual fundraiser for the Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library , which holds a   collection of Jackson’s papers . He then gave a community reading the next day in the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. 

In his poem “Double Major,” Jackson gives his writing self a hard time, observing:

Judging by audience reactions on both days as Jackson read from “Razzle Dazzle: New and Selected Poems, 2002-2022,” those knocks were music to many ears.

‘A library humming like a swarm of gnats’

Jackson is the Gertrude Conaway Vanderbilt Chair in the Humanities at Vanderbilt University. His earlier poetry collections include “The Absurd Man” (2020), “Roll Deep” (2015), “Holding Company” (2010), “Hoops” (2006) and “Leaving Saturn” (2002), which won the Cave Canem Prize.

The poetry editor of the Harvard Review and host of the poetry podcast “ The Slowdown ,” Jackson is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has received fellowships from the Academy of American Poets , John S. Guggenheim Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University, as well as having been awarded a Pushcart Prize and a Whiting Award.

Before Jackson took the stage at the 12th Night Revel, administrators, faculty, staff and students read poems from W. B. Yeats, Ada Limón, Walt Whitman, Mary Oliver, John Keats, Nikki Giovanni, Phillis Wheatley, Hart Crane and others. Some readers shared original works. 

Valeda Dent , vice provost of libraries and museum, welcomed the crowd, saying: “We are here to recognize the importance of the Rose Library to the campus and community.” Acknowledging that she had been thinking about climate change and its impact on future generations, Dent read from Jane Hirshfield’s “On the Fifth Day.”

President Gregory L. Fenves called the Rose Library “a crown jewel, one that serves as a vital and widely used resource for our students, scholars and visitors from around the world.” He chose to read “Crossing” by Jericho Brown , Charles Howard Candler Professor of English and Creative Writing and interim director of the Creative Writing Program.

Emory College junior Michael Dehn thanked Tiphanie Yanique , professor of English and creative writing, for “reintroducing me to the power of words,” then recited former U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate Kara Jackson’s lyrics from the song “ Why Does the Earth Give Us People to Love?”

Chief revelers Joseph Crespino , Jimmy Carter Professor of History, and singer/songwriter Caroline Herring Crespino kept the audience on its toes.

Contending that “even debate or argument can be a form of revelry,” Joseph Crespino suggested conversation prompts to discuss at each table. They were: (1) Bob Dylan had no business winning the Pulitzer Prize for Literature; (2) Irish literature, meh; and (3) In the battle of the poet laureates, who emerges victorious, Ada Limón or Natasha Trethewey?

Caroline Herring Crespino signaled her love of Irish literature by singing and playing guitar as she performed the Yeats poem “The Song of Wandering Aengus.”

When the director of the Rose Library, Jennifer Gunter King, was introduced by Lisa Macklin, associate vice provost and university librarian, she received a standing ovation for her accomplishments over five years. In March, King will begin a new leadership role with the Boston University Libraries.

Jackson, King noted, was a member of the influential Dark Room Collective , formed in Boston in 1988 to establish community for African American writers. The Rose Library already has the papers of members Natasha Trethewey, Kevin Young, Tracy K. Smith and Major Jackson, and is looking to add to its collections to enable future research.

As King thanked the audience for its support of the Rose Library, she likened it to “writing a love letter from the past to the future, with all of us standing here together in the in-between space.” She went on to read a poem by her father — one that had never been read, which she found in his papers after his death.  

Heather Christle , assistant professor of English and creative writing and faculty advisor to the 12th Night Revel, introduced Jackson, citing a line from Jackson’s poem “My Children’s Inheritance,” which reads: “A library humming like a swarm of gnats.”

“I want to start with that line,” Christle noted, “because I know that the people in this room have heard that hum, the urgent murmur that rises from bookshelves and archival boxes, the voices of the living and dead and the language with which they continue to speak. It seems that hum has followed Jackson, and he the hum, from an early age and not only in libraries but all over town.”

Clearly touched to be in a place where poetry is prized, Jackson began his reading in a humble spirit — choosing to read Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney’s “Digging,” about the excavations of his father and grandfather as well as his own as a writer. A significant influence on Jackson, Heaney is being honored at the upcoming Ellmann Lectures , taking place at the Schwartz Center March 3-5. 

Funny, humble and prone to conceits

The community reading Major gave on Feb. 18 was part of the Raymond Danowski Poetry Library Reading Series , currently in its 19th year. Acquired in 2004, the Raymond Danowski Poetry Library consists of 85,000 examples of rare and first editions of modern and contemporary poetry and thus is one of the largest, most significant collections of verse in the world.

Tayari Jones , Charles Howard Candler Professor of English and Creative Writing, introduced Jackson. Friends for more than 20 years, Jones noted Jackson’s “growth as a poet, professor, critic, truth teller, beauty builder and passionate advocate for poetry and the arts. His six extraordinary volumes make clear his insight, wit, fearlessness and capacious heart. He lives at the crossroads of history and possibility as a son of Philly and a man of the world.”

Jones cited Jackson’s ability to connect with listeners, describing a friend who is “not a poet, a professor or an artist. He is a Black man who gets up every day, drops his kids off at school and goes to work. He stumbled upon the ‘Slowdown’ podcast and was hooked.”

On full display as Jackson read were qualities that John Freeman of LitHub noted when he said that “no American poet wears his genius as lightly.”

Jackson didn’t take long to amuse the audience. After announcing “my work is here for reading and research,” he said, “by the way, I’m still writing. You should know that.”

Before reading “Lovesick,” he confessed: “My wife is a poet, so that makes February 14th quite challenging in my house. You can’t show up with a greeting card; you have to have written a poem.”

Poking fun at poetry’s solemn rites, Jackson told the audience that although writing an ode and sonnet are “part of the job description for being a poet,” he had not ever written an ode. As he set out to right this wrong in “Razzle Dazzle,” he couldn’t decide on an object — “Should it be socks or cats?” he asked himself — so he wrote “Ode to Everything.” 

Moving effortlessly between the serious and the lighthearted, the poem thanks the ice cream cone for “building a paradise in my mouth,” the “yellow circle in a traffic light for illustrating patience” and “my neighbor who sits vigil beside the dying far away from the lights.”

Acknowledging his “addiction to long conceits,” Jackson offered an example in another new poem, “It Must Be the Supermarket in Me,” which begins:

Jackson told of having lived in Vermont and, for 15 years, observing a grueling travel schedule to teach in the creative writing program of New York University. In so doing, he waged a perpetual battle with himself about whether to chat with his seatmates.

“If I wanted to sleep on the early flight from Vermont, all I would need to say, when asked by my neighbor what I did for living, was ‘I’m a poet.’ That shuts down all conversation,” he joked.

But there came a day when that answer didn’t work. 

“One gentleman was persistent,” Jackson said. “I told him I was a poet and just as I was folding my jacket into a pillow, he said, ‘Why?’ Startled, I had no answer. As soon as I landed, I went to my office and composed ‘Why I Write Poetry.’” 

Each line begins with the word “because” and ends:

Regarding tender ages, Jackson told the audience that he had given an interview before the reading to an up-and-coming reporter, Skye , who writes for Scholastic Kids Press and is the daughter of Oxford College faculty member Erica Oduaran. In the article she went on to publish on Jackson, Skye reveals his advice to young poets: “read, read and read.”

Jackson shared with Skye wisdom he had gleaned from the poet Etheridge Knight — namely, that a triangle necessarily forms between the poet, the poem and the people.

“A poem is not complete until it enters the community, until it is read and absorbed,” Jackson said. A recording of his reading is available for those still eager to join that community. 

As the afternoon light faded and the applause rose, more than a dozen poems had gone out into the world — absorbed and appreciated.
