Department of Economics
Phd program.
The Department of Economics runs a small but high-quality PhD program. PhD students can attend first-year courses at the Study Center Gerzensee, together with PhD students from other Swiss universities.
Many of our previous PhD students have spent one or two semester of their graduate studies abroad, at universities such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University, Brown University, etc.
The Department of Economics has an excellent track record of placing graduates in research-oriented positions in government agencies and the private sector. Graduates that seek to pursue an academic career often get very good placements as well. List of Recent Placements.
During the coursework stage, doctoral students shall attend courses in the amount of at least 24 ECTS. The students must successfully complete a sequence of first-year PhD courses offered by the Swiss Program for Beginning Doctoral Students in Economics at Gerzensee or by another program recognized as equivalent by the PhD program committee.
In addition, the students are required to obtain at least 6 ECTS from advanced PhD courses offered by the department of economics. Each year, the department offers at least one advanced PhD course in each of thefollowing areas of research: macroeconomics, microeconomics and quantitative methods.
Doctoral Thesis
The doctoral thesis is evaluated and graded by the dissertation committee, which consists of the main advisor and at least a second reviewer who is not a member of the department.
The PhD program at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences leads, after successful completion, to the title Doctor rerum oeconomicarum, Dr. rer. oec.
Further information on the struture of the PhD program and the doctoral thesis can be found in the Guidelines for PhD Students .

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Economics
About the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Economics
UNSW’s Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Economics is offered by one of the world's top institutions in Economics (ranked 42nd in QS Subject Rankings - 2023) and will equip you with the expertise needed to become a globally focused and socially engaged researcher.
You’ll be joining a cohort of high-achieving research students in tackling modern-day challenges at the forefront of economics, working alongside leaders in the field. This is your opportunity to become integrated into the UNSW Business School’s community of scholars.
The program is comprised of two components. You’ll begin by undertaking rigorous coursework covering microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, econometrics and applied economic analysis. As part of your doctoral program, you’ll also be involved in research projects even from an early stage. This research training will equip you with the skills required to identify, analyse and solve problems in the field.
You’ll then pursue independent research under the supervision of high-profile UNSW academics, culminating in a doctoral thesis. Your PhD thesis will allow you to showcase your research skills and enable you to make an original contribution to the field of Economics. There will also be exciting opportunities throughout to interact with industry leaders, and to develop your teaching portfolio.
Our training is geared toward preparing you for a career in academia, although other career paths (e.g., consulting, government, industry, non-profit) are also enabled.
The vast majority of our higher degree research students are supported through a tuition waiver and stipend of around A$35-45K per year.
Before formally applying or contacting potential supervisors, you must complete an Expression of Interest (EOI) by sending the required material to [email protected] . Please read the "Instructions for Applicants" section below.

What our users think about us
I have been a member of INOMICS community for over 8 years. I came across the platform when I was looking for a summer school in Europe to prepare myself for my Master’s studies, so I decided to give it a shot. As soon as I found my summer course on INOMICS (which I enjoyed a lot), I started to explore the website more and realized that I can also use it for finding great PhD programs, academic jobs, conferences and professional courses. I think it is the most complete source of information for students or career seekers in the field of economics. Gökhan, PhD Student in Economics at Ankara University
INOMICS has been quite useful, since information about courses, universities and scholarships is usually hard to access. This is especially true when it comes to the quantity of information one can obtain on INOMICS. I also know that I will be using it to find job postings at the end of this year when I go to the job market! Carolina, PhD Student in International Economics at Brandeis University

We have organized an online meeting to introduce you to our PhD Programme. During this meeting we presented the PhD programme in Economics and Management of the University of Padova and we talked about admissions, structure, faculty, courses, activities, placement.
You can watch the video here and download the slides here
We offer a full-time, four-year advanced doctoral programme for outstanding students who want to achieve an ambitious training in one of our two curricula : Economics or Management . For each curriculum, the PhD training varies and takes place during the first year . Most classes take place in Padova, while some courses are organised jointly with the University of Verona. By the end of the first year all students have identified a supervisor, the topic of their thesis, and present their first “summer” paper.
During the second, and third year, students work exclusively on their thesis under the close supervision of two faculty members and enjoy a vibrating research environment .
During the fourth year, students are expected to conclude their thesis and go to the academic job market . The department supports students actively in this endeavor. Over the years, our graduates have achieved placements in prestigious universities such as the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, University of Warwick, University of Exeter Business School, University of Concordia, Tuck School of Business, EUI, IESE, ESADE, Trinity College, University of Copenhagen, University of New South Wales, University of Groningen, and several Italian Universities. Other have joined important institutions such as the Bank of Italy, the OECD, and the World Bank.
At least 3 months of the PhD is spent in a research institution abroad . Over the years, our PhD students visited outstanding universities such as, for example, Columbia University, London School of Economics, New York Stern School of Business (US), Penn University, University of Chicago, University of Toulouse and University of Georgia. Others have taken advantage of the exchange agreements of our institution with international partners like Boston University and the University of Michigan.
The presentation of our program is available here .
