5 ways to create the perfect CV and cover letter for international development

If you’ve ever volunteered, raised funds or taken part in other charitable pursuits, make sure you highlight them when applying. why did you do it what sort of impact did it have how did you find the experience.

There is growing demand for roles in the NGO and not-for-profit sector.

And with an increasing number of jobs going to the countries and regions where charities operate, getting a role in international development and humanitarian assistance can be tricky.

However, this should not discourage you. International development charities and NGOs work with the most vulnerable people in the world. The work they do is very important, and the impact the sector has on you and those you’re helping can be enormous.

Here are five tips to help you stand out on your CV and cover letter when you’re applying for a job in international development.

1. Make your CV and cover letter “international development friendly”.

No matter where your career experience lies, make it relevant to the role, organisation and area of focus. What skills have you acquired that are transferable? What have you done in your previous roles that would be effective within international development? Can your achievements be repeated for a not-for-profit organisation?

Make sure your CV and cover letter reference your passion and knowledge for international development and the organisation’s cause. You should also demonstrate the impact you would hope to have within the role you’re applying for.

2. Focus on volunteering, fundraising and other charitable pursuits

As covered in our changing careers section, there are lots of extracurricular activities you can do in international development. Not only is this hugely rewarding, it can also give your CV and your cover letter a boost.

If you’ve ever volunteered, raised funds or taken part in other charitable pursuits, make sure you highlight them when applying. Why did you do it? What sort of impact did it have? How did you find the experience

Is your CV ready to go? Check out our latest job postings.

3. make it about the role, not the organisation or its focus.

Even if you put across a compelling account of why you want to work in a particular organisation, it won’t mean much unless you can show that the role is right for you.

Make sure you respond to every responsibility listed on a job description with examples of how you have completed such a task. Demonstrable experience is crucial when you’re applying for any job, so so show you can do it.

4. Keep it brief. Only include the relevant information

Now you have your relevant experience and you’ve shown your knowledge and passion for the organisation and its focus and ethos. What else do you need?

Be concise with what you include in your CV and cover letter. If previous roles aren’t particularly relevant to what you’re applying for, then don’t go into detail. If the post isn’t asking for a degree, then leave it to the end with minimal detail. Make your application as compact as possible.

5. Say something different.

Before you submit your application, give it a read through from the perspective of someone hiring. Not only will this give you the opportunity to look out for any typos or mistakes, it will help you gauge whether what you’ve said will stand out from the crowd.

Most applications will end up sounding similar to each other. What can you say to make people take notice? Is there anything in your application that will make you stand out? If not, then why not? Make sure you sound like a unique individual, perfect for the role.

Remember to provide specific examples and quantify your achievements whenever possible to make your cover letter more impactful.

Common Mistakes To Avoid

When crafting your cover letter for a Director of Learning and Development position, it's important to avoid these common mistakes:

Being Too Generic : One of the biggest mistakes you can make is writing a generic cover letter that could be used for any job. Your cover letter should be tailored specifically to the Director of Learning and Development role and the company you are applying to. Take the time to research the company's learning and development needs and incorporate that information into your cover letter. Show that you understand their specific challenges and goals and explain how your expertise can help address them.

Failing to Showcase Leadership Abilities : As a Director of Learning and Development, leadership skills are essential. However, many candidates fail to effectively showcase their leadership abilities in their cover letters. Make sure to highlight any relevant leadership experience you have, such as managing a team, leading training programs, or overseeing the development of learning initiatives. Provide specific examples of how you have successfully led and influenced others to achieve positive outcomes.

Not Highlighting How Your Expertise Can Help Address Specific Learning and Development Needs : A common mistake is to focus too much on your own qualifications and experience without showing how they align with the company's learning and development needs. Take the time to understand the company's current learning and development initiatives, challenges, and goals. Then, clearly articulate how your expertise and experience can help address those specific needs. Provide concrete examples of how you have successfully implemented learning and development strategies in the past and the impact they had on the organization.

Neglecting to Customize the Cover Letter : Another mistake to avoid is using a generic cover letter that is not customized to the Director of Learning and Development role. Hiring managers can easily spot a generic cover letter and it shows a lack of effort and interest in the position. Take the time to personalize your cover letter by addressing it to the hiring manager, mentioning specific details about the company, and showcasing your enthusiasm for the role. This customization will demonstrate your genuine interest and increase your chances of standing out from other applicants.

Focusing Too Much on Technical Skills and Neglecting Soft Skills : While technical skills are important for a Director of Learning and Development, it's equally important to highlight your soft skills. This includes your ability to communicate effectively, build relationships, and influence others. Don't solely focus on your technical expertise, but also emphasize your interpersonal and leadership skills. Provide examples of how you have effectively collaborated with others, facilitated learning experiences, and managed relationships with stakeholders.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can create a strong and compelling cover letter that highlights your qualifications, leadership abilities, and how you can meet the specific learning and development needs of the company you are applying to.

In conclusion, a well-crafted cover letter can greatly enhance your chances of landing a rewarding position as a Director of Learning and Development. As demonstrated in the examples above, a strong cover letter should showcase your relevant skills, experience, and achievements in a concise and compelling manner.

It is important to tailor your cover letter to the specific job you are applying for, highlighting the key qualifications and qualities the employer is seeking. By addressing the company's needs and demonstrating your value as a candidate, you can make a strong impression and stand out from the competition.

Remember to keep your cover letter professional, error-free, and engaging. Use a confident and positive tone throughout, emphasizing your passion for learning and development and your ability to drive organizational growth and success.

By following these examples and incorporating the key takeaways, you can create a standout cover letter that effectively showcases your qualifications and convinces employers to invite you for an interview. Best of luck with your job search!

About The Airport

If you haven’t heard about Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 new developments planned along the Red Sea coast, know that the undertaking is massive. An array of ultra-luxurious resorts, dining, marinas, diving, shopping, golf courses, and recreation options are to be focused on regenerative tourism intending to diversify the oil economy of the region.

A rendering of the Red Sea International Airport, about 90 kilometers south of Al Wajh, as it will ... [+] look upon completion, embracing five mini terminals able to operate independently to reduce energy use.

Upon its scheduled completion in entirety, The Red Sea Project envelope currently embraces 50 resorts, 8,000 hotel rooms, 1,000 residential properties, 22 islands, and six sites further inland. And that does not include other regional projects, like NEOM, The Mukaab, Trojena, and Oxagon. Power for all this is generated from the already built and operational 760,000 panels in five off-grid solar farms, the world’s largest battery storage facility checkin in at 1.2 Gigawatt hours.

The Red Sea International Airport is small, but its design is intended to provide white-glove service to an ultra-high end luxury traveler. Designed to become the first carbon-neutral airport in the Middle East, the facility uses local materials, minimizes light pollution, and incorporates 100 percent renewable energy in accordance with minimum LEED Gold Certification building standards. The main terminal, set to fully open in 2025, is built with five small terminals able to operate independently as demand dictates, reducing energy use.

Red Sea International is designed for guests to feel relaxed and pampered, with baggage systems that ... [+] seamlessly deliver luggage to guest destinations while providing a see-through window from arrival to plane via expansive glass walls.

About the Region

Enormous projects that the airport currently serve include the Six Senses Southern Dunes at the Red Sea and the St. Regis Red Sea Resort. Additional resorts scheduled to open in 2024 name Nujuma, a Ritz Carlton Reserve that is one of only seven worldwide, the Shebara resort featuring stainless steel orb overwater villas, and the Desert Rock resort tucked between the mountain range and the western seacoast.

Notably large developments here include the Mukaab in Riyadh, a giant cube 400 meters x 400 meters x 400 meters. The structure will house a central tower surrounded by a huge screen display, delivering 100,000 residential units, 9,000 hotel rooms, and 980,000 square meters of retail space.

The Line in NEOM will build a 170 kilometer structure intended to house nine million residents in compact, linear neighborhoods connected by underground transit. Trojena is an outdoor ski destination that is 50 kilometers from the Red Sea Coast, already scheduled to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games.

Sindalah is designed as a luxury island destination with an 86 berth marina and 75 offshore buoys, yacht club, 51 luxury retailers, three luxury hotels, and a bevy of services.

Red Sea Global and the Public Investment Fund

A closed joint-stock company owned by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia , the projects being undertaken by Red Sea Global look to a sustainable future that will diversify its economy while nurturing the environment.

There are some who question the scope of the project, critical of its claim to sustainability, and concerned whether much of the planned vision is truly viable. Others state confusion regarding the various areas of development. For that, a decent primer is provided by Middle East Travel and Tourism Editor, John Navarre.

Pros and cons aside, many photos and videos of actual construction of infrastructure and luxurious hospitality facilities regularly document progress. In the interim, Red Sea Global has put together a music album delivering a mix of Saudi, Arab, and African cultural pieces to further inspire visions of Red Sea landscapes for future guests of the region. Sweet dreams.
