If you're planning to  travel abroad , in many cases you will need to obtain a visa beforehand. The requirements vary according to your country of origin and your destination. But for a lot of people, the process to be granted a visa can seem daunting and unclear. In this article, we share important tips about visas to equip you with the knowledge to prepare for your international trip. Read on to find out more about how tourist visas work, including a very useful sample cover letter for your tourist visa application.

What Exactly Is a Tourist Visa?

A tourist visa or visitor visa is an official document that allows you to get in another country. In general, you are likely to need one every time you visit another country. However, this depends on which country you are from and where you are going, as some countries have agreements that allow entrance even without it.

A tourist visa may take different forms: it can be a paper document, although it most often comes as a simple stamp in your passport . Some countries require you to arrange your visa before arriving in the country, while others issue it to you once you land at the airport.

A tourist visa indicates how long you are allowed to stay in the country. It also defines which activities you are allowed to participate in or not while there, such as working and studying.

Other Types of Visas

how long is a passport good for

A tourist visa is the most common and most acquired type of visa. It is usually only valid for a short period of time, commonly ranging from a few weeks to a couple of months.

This is what you will need if you are just planning to visit the country. A tourist visa however doesn't allow you to work and study while you are in a particular country.

Others types of visas include student visas, business visas, media visas, fiancé visas , and many others depending on the place you're travelling to.

Resident visas are also available for those who want to live in a particular country. You will normally need a valid reason to obtain this type of visa, as they tend to be the most difficult to get.

What You Need to Apply for a Tourist Visa

As mentioned above, tourist visa requirements vary with your nationality and your destination, as well as where you make your application. You should always check the instructions application to your specific situation on the relevant embassy or consulate website. Having said that, there are some general requirements and common documents that are needed for most tourist visa applications.

These include:

  • Passport valid for at least six (6) months beyond the intended period of stay
  • Duly filled out visa application forms
  • Confirmed round-trip tickets
  • Cover letter for tourist visa or letter to the consulate

Top tip: travel insurance for your visa application

Most tourist visa applications require you to show proof of travel insurance coverage for the duration of your trip. We use and recommend SafetyWing as our preferred travel medical insurance provider. It's the most flexible and affordable we've found, starting at just $1.32 per day. They can also provide a visa letter to support your application. If you're looking for more comprehensive coverage, World Nomads is also a reliable and very popular alternative among global travelers. Note: In our experience and to the best of our knowledge, these two travel insurance options fulfill the requirements for most tourist visa applications. However, please make sure to check that they meet the specific criteria applicable to your individual case.

The cover letter or letter to the consulate is necessary for tourist visas that require interviews. This letter needs to explain why you want to visit the country and where you will be staying in the country. It must also outline the intended dates and duration of your stay.

Moreover, this letter is your way to tell the embassy if you are getting a sponsorship from a friend, parents, or a romantic partner who are currently based in that country. It's important to take your time to write your cover letter, although you should also make sure to keep it to-the-point and not too long.

If the trip is going to be  sponsored by someone else , make sure to include the following details in the cover letter for your tourist visa application:

  • The name of the person who is going to sponsor your trip
  • The job or source of income of the person who is going to sponsor you
  • Your proof or relationship (normally pictures)
  • Proof of financial capability of your sponsor
  • The expenses your sponsor will cover

The cover letter is a really important document to provide before your trip. It states every important thing you want to tell the embassy or consulate. Make sure that it mentions and explains every document you've submitted.

To give you a better insight into how to create a cover letter for your visa application, here is a sample cover letter for a tourist visa needed to enter a country:

Bona Fide & How To Write One (To Get Your New Zealand Visitor Visa)

Bona Fide for New Zealand Visitor Visa - Learn how to write one for your New Zealand visitor visa on www.travelswithsun.com

Depending on which country you’re from, you can stay in New Zealand for 3 months under a Visitor Visa. But what if circumstances cause you to stay there for longer than 3 months? This is when you need to write a bona fide.

Hence, this post is for you if you need to write up a bona fide to get a visitor’s visa (specifically the one for New Zealand).

It may also serve as a useful reference even if you are not going to New Zealand.

PS: If you want to see the other types of visas that New Zealand offers:

We have a handy comparison table in our previous post, Working Holiday visa for New Zealand .

Explore this post:

  • Types of visitor visa New Zealand
  • Requirements for visitor visa New Zealand
  • What is a bonafide?
  • Why do you need a bona fide?
  • Bona fide sample letter
  • Guidelines to writing a bona fide for a New Zealand visitor visa

Why Did My Bona Fide Get Rejected By The NZ Immigration?

Types of visitor visa new zealand.

To put it simply, this visa will allow you to travel in New Zealand for a maximum of 9 months . You can visit friends, go for a sports event, etc.

And you can even study for a total of 3 months.

But there should absolutely be no working on your part – not for food, money or accommodation.

Write-a-bona-fide-for-your-New-Zealand-visitor-Visa - more information on www.travelswithsun.com

There are 2 types of Visitor Visa in New Zealand:

Visa Waiver Visitor Visa (Waiver Country)

As of 1 October, 2019 anyone from the 60 waiver countries listed will now have to pay for an NZeTA to enter New Zealand. That includes Malaysia! More details below under requirements for a visitor visa to New Zealand.

The maximum number of months you can stay in New Zealand with this visa is 3 months for non-UK citizens. UK citizens get to stay up to 6 months with this visa.

You don’t need any documentation except your passport and a return ticket for this visa when you arrive at the immigration in New Zealand.

And if all goes well, you should get a stamp in your passport from the respective officer.

For this visa, it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that you fill out your arrival card as honestly as possible.

  • It’s possible to extend your stay in New Zealand (e.g. after your 6 months’ working holiday is complete) with this visa.
  • However, if you’re already in New Zealand: y ou’ll have to first fly out of the country first and show proof of sufficient funds (for up to 3 months, including your return ticket or the ticket receipt).

But this blog post is mainly focusing on the other type of visitor visa:

Visitor Visa

This visa cost me $165 NZD back in 2018 and lets you stay in New Zealand for a maximum of 9 months.

Note: As of 17th May 2022, the cost of applying for the visitor visa increased to $246.

Provided that you have not already exceeded a total of 9 months’ stay in New Zealand in an 18 month period.

In contrast to the previous Visitor Visa (Country Waiver):

You need all sorts of paperwork as evidence that you will be a genuine visitor.

Don’t put this off to the last minute because it really does take the immigration office a long time to process applications for the Visitor Visa.

For your reference, I submitted my application in May 21, 2018 and got the Visa in June 13, 2018 – a total of 18 working days.

  • If rejected, you must apply for the Visa again (and pay$246 fee again – ouch).
  • Read the guidelines on the official site carefully before applying.
  • Try to apply at least a month ahead of your intended start date too.

Requirements For Visitor Visa New Zealand

Nzeta and ivl for visa waiver travellers.

What is this the NZeTA?

All would-be visitors (including transit) to New Zealand must check if they need an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before going to New Zealand.

Besides this NZeTA, you may have to pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) too.

Who’s applicable?

  • Anyone visiting or in-transit from a visa waiver country (see the list of visa waiver countries )
  • Permanent residents of Australia
  • Anyone travelling on a passport from a transit visa waiver country who will be in transit through Auckland International Airport on the way out to another country
  • Even cruise ship passengers from visa waiver countries must have an NZeTA.

Who’s not applicable for the NZeTa?

  • Anyone who needs a visa for New Zealand or is already holding a valid one (this includes a Permanent Resident Visa)
  • New Zealand citizens
  • Australian citizen travelling with Australia passport

How do I apply for the NZeTa?

There are 2 methods:

  • NZeTA online request system on immigration.govt.nz
  • Download the immigration App and apply through there.

When to apply for the NZeTa:

It takes up to 72 hours for your NZeTA to be approved so do so way before your trip to avoid being barred from boarding the plane!

How much will application cost?

The cost of the IVL (International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy) will be NZD $35 and will be charged together in the same transaction as your NZeTA:

If you apply online , it will be NZD $12 + NZD $35 = NZD $47

And if you apply through their app , it will be NZD $9 + NZD $35 = NZD $44

How long are my NZeTA and IVL valid for?

They are valid for multiple visits and up to a maximum of 2 years .

Criteria You Have To Meet For A Visitor Visa

  • Be able to prove your identity
  • Have good health or acknowledge (and prove) that you will pay for your own health care
  • Most importantly, you have to be a genuine tourist – no funny business or working under table.
  • You can apply for your family in the same application but you have to pay the fees per head
  • Prove that you have sufficient funds needed to travel around and a ticket to get out of New Zealand later (or have evidence of a sponsorship)
  • No major criminal offenses or previous denial to a visa from another country – you might be able to talk your way out of this one through your bona fide but there is no guarantee

You also need these:

Paperwork For A New Zealand Visitor Visa

These are the things you have to upload together with your online application on the official New Zealand immigration website:

Tip: The client number is not the visa waiver stamp number on your passport in case you are wondering. You can leave this blank unless you do have one from a previous application.

  • Bona fide letter
  • Chest x-ray documentation – it cost me $160 to do it in Auckland (back in 2018). If it’s cheaper in your own country, do that instead. Check the official website for the list of panel clinics in your country.
  • Resume or CV – it goes without saying that this should be your most recent resume
  • Bank statement –  at least $1000 NZD** for every month (per person and including accommodation) you intend to stay (not including the money for the flight tickets!)
  • A scanned softcopy of your passport (make sure your passport validity covers the duration of your intended stay!)
  • Passport photo – Save some money and do this in your own country.

You need a passport photo softcopy to apply for a visitor visa in New Zealand -more on www.travelswithsun.com

It cost me $25 NZD to get it done at the post office in a small town in New Zealand. Check out the passport photo do’s and don’t’s on the official website first !

**Alternatively, you just need to show that you have:

  • At least $400 NZD per month per person together with proof of payment for your accommodation in New Zealand
  • A financial sponsor to cover you during your stay in New Zealand

More Information On The Chest X-ray Requirement

  • The clinic submitted the x-ray form to the immigration office on my behalf.
  • Note that your x-ray must come from a panel clinic listed on the official New Zealand immigration website.
  • When I last checked, there were only two acceptable clinics for Malaysia. One was a clinic in Kuala Lumpur and another one was located in Penang.
  • Auckland however, has many panel clinics – the one I went to was walking distance from my rented house.

What Is A Bonafide?

To start with, a bona fide can be a cover letter that explains your background and purpose of visiting the country that you wish to apply for.

It may also include your future plans after your intended time in the country you visit. And that is the case if you want to apply for a New Zealand visitor visa.

The bona fide should serve to clear any doubts the immigration may have on your true intentions:

You can therefore also explain why you don’t intend to permanently immigrate to New Zealand. For example, proof of a steady business in your home country. Or several properties that you own and manage in your own country.

Another important reason for a bonafide is to prove that you have the financial means to support yourself during your stay in New Zealand (without having to work there), and be able to fly out of the country on the designated date.

Why Do You Need A Bona fide?

New Zealand immigration requires a black and white softcopy of such a document.

You can upload it online together with the other documents listed above. After making a RealMe account (an easy and straightforward process in itself).

Use the bona fide letter to tie all your evidence together (not literally, of course!).

When I wrote my own bona fide, I wasn’t sure whether it would even be approved or not. There were no templates to follow and the instructions on the official New Zealand immigration site were very general.

Move on to the next section in this post if you want to know how to write your own bona fide cover letter.

PS: We don’t offer bona fide cover letter services. I’ve gotten a few requests which I declined.

Bona Fide Sample Letter

Disclaimer – Using this template or following the guidelines below will not guarantee your success in obtaining a visa (from whichever country you are trying to apply for) by using this template. I’m just sharing what worked for me back in 2018 when I successfully applied and obtained an extended visitor visa (with just one application) to stay longer in New Zealand with my then-boyfriend who had a NZ Working Holiday Visa.

You can use this as a base template for your own bona fide.

Guidelines To Writing A Bona Fide For A New Zealand Visitor Visa

I based the following guidelines on what I could piece together from various sources online.

  • Firstly, state why you want the visitor visa. (e.g. for me, my main reason was to follow my then-boyfriend who successfully obtained a working holiday visa. I included his visa application number here at this point.) Mention what you plan to do while in New Zealand. It should be very clear that you are not going to set up a business or work part time while you are there.
  • Include a summary of your travel plans – just put it into one of your first paragraphs. If you have a detailed plan, you can attached it together with the cover letter.
  • Next, write something on your family background. The purpose is to show that your roots are still in your own country and it’s highly unlikely you would move to New Zealand.
  • Education background – short summary will do
  • Working background – write a short summary on your working history and add your current resume to the upload
  • Health background – if you have any major ailments, here is where you can mention those. I think you will have a higher chance of getting your visa approved if you’re relatively healthy. Otherwise, make sure your bank statements reflect that you can cover your own medical expenses.
  • Travel background – your intention to travel to New Zealand for a holiday appears more credible if you have already been to other countries for a holiday before. List them down together with the year and month of travel as well as the duration of each trip. State what the purpose of each trip was and if you had any problems obtaining a Visa for those. Drop old Visa numbers here if you still have them.

Tip: Please make sure to include how long you want to stay (an exact date would be best). Do not take for granted that they will grant you 9 months – they won’t . Ask for multiple entry as well.

Ending Your Bona Fide Cover Letter For A Visitor Visa

Besides all of the above, I added more details on our travel plans (by month) in New Zealand as well as our current  New Zealand address and phone number. I even put our camper car’s license plate number and my boyfriend’s New Zealand working history.

If you need to leave New Zealand and re-enter again during your holiday duration in New Zealand, please request for it.

Explain why you would need a multiple-entry Visa . Put down the exact date you plan to leave New Zealand (i.e. the last day of your holiday) if you can too. They will not grant you 9 months by default.

At the very end of my bona fide cover letter, I shared my future travel plans after New Zealand to emphasize that I would not be migrating to New Zealand in the future.

My last point was to drop my email address and ask them to contact me if there were any questions (They didn’t have any questions though).

After writing your letter, covert it into a pdf and upload it together with the other documents.

As of May 2022, visa application processing for the Visitor Visa can take anywhere between 44 days to 5 months. Check here for the latest update .

Back in 2018, it was 21 days and if successful, you should get an email from the New Zealand immigration that contains your client number and your visitor visa. The expiry date will be clearly stated too.

Moreover, if you did request for multiple-entry and the request got through, it will be stated there too. Good luck in your application!

Making Changes After Your Visa Has Been Approved

Let’s say you need to change your visa conditions to multiple-entry. Or, you want to extend further.

Here are some things to consider:

  • You have to pay the fee of $165 NZD again (now $246 NZD) and submit online again but with the previous supporting documents with some exceptions (e.g. update bank statement and cover letter)
  • The X-ray certificate is valid for up to 3 years
  • Use the same passport photo you uploaded last time if you still look the same.

Before you go through all the effort of extending your current visitor visa, consider the possibility of flying out of New Zealand before the end of your visa and coming back with the visitor waiver visa.

For example, if your visitor visa happens to end on Jan 1, 2019. You could fly out of New Zealand and come back with the visitor visa (waiver country) then.

But what if you’ve already used the visitor visa (waiver) before?

According to the immigration officer I called, my visitor waiver visa record (I previously used 2 of 3 allowed months) reset when I obtained the longer visitor visa.

In fact, he said as long as I leave the country before Jan 1, 2019, I could come back in using my refreshed visitor waiver visa (i.e. another 3 months).

Don’t forget:

The same conditions still apply for the visitor waiver visa – e.g. return ticket out of New Zealand and proof of sufficient funds during your visit to New Zealand

Working Holiday Visa For New Zealand

Or you could try your luck with the Working Holiday visa (if you were never successfully granted one before and you are still less than 31 years old.

If you already have one and it’s time to extend it, do check out our post about how to extend your New Zealand working holiday visa (and some conditions to meet) .

The immigration office will unfortunately not state the reason for your application getting rejected.

So to answer this question, think back on what you wrote in your bona fide. Did you give them reason to suspect your real intentions of going to New Zealand?

Reasons A Bona Fide Will Be Rejected By The NZ Immigration

Here are some possible reasons why your bona fide was rejected based on what is listed on the NZ immigration official website (and also my own thoughts on the matter):

  • Evidence and content in your bona fide (as well as previous applications) don’t match up
  • There is cause to believe that your actual reason for visiting New Zealand is false (e.g., different from you wrote on your visa application or arrival card) or unlawful
  • It appears doubtful that you will follow the conditions of your visa (e.g., previous visa rejection from another country, lack of sufficient funds, previous breach of visa conditions, etc)
  • You are missing some necessary documents to return to your home country (this is why having a return flight ticket might increase your chances of getting your application approved)
  • You’ve exceed the maximum length of stay possible for your circumstances and country of origin
  • Your country of origin is not in the visa waiver country list (this might affect your chances of success)
  • Your passport validity is not long enough (I.e., expiry date must be at least 3 months after the indented date of your visit)

When they say lawful purposes, they mean any of the following – you are going to New Zealand simply for a holidaying or sightseeing, to visit friends and relatives, training or studying in New Zealand for 3 months or less, for your wedding or a business consultation, or to participate in an amateur sports event.

Other reasons they may accept include getting medical treatment in New Zealand. Or if you have a personal invitation from the the NZ government.

Whatever, the reason, you are NOT ALLOWED to work in New Zealand during the duration of your stay if you are holding a Visitor Visa.

Note: Applicable to both Visa Waiver Visitor Visa and Visitor Visa

Furthermore, if you’re travelling with a partner, you have to prove your relationship (a screenshot of your chat history is not good enough) and they must have a clear record too (e.g. following their visa conditions, no previous visa rejections or criminal records, etc).

By now, you should at least know how to get started on your New Zealand bona fide – that pesky (but unfortunately crucial) letter that stands between you and a visitor visa.

Don’t forget to specify exactly when you want the visa to end (no more than 9 months in a 12 month period). Or else, the immigration office will do it for you and they will put the bare minimum (the date of your flight).

We really recommend you to call the NZ immigration office yourself before your trip as they have the latest information on visas. It takes a while to get through to the office so list down all your questions first!

Hi, what about a group visa? As a group leader do I to provide all my member with each individual Bona Fide letter or can I simply write one for all. Thanks

Hello Anon, Thanks for your question.

Applying by group just needs one bona fide letter, I believe.

By the way, I have also asked the immigration office before, you still have to pay the application fee per head either way. In case you were thinking it might save some money.

Hope that helps. Thanks.

More information on group applications here, point 4 under Group application s>> https://www.immigration.govt.nz/about-us/our-online-systems/applying-for-a-visa-online/immigration-online/how-to-use-immigration-online/group-applications

Looks like you can submit one cover letter (bona fide) for your whole group.

please can your share us the proper written bonafide of yours.

Hi Param, for personal reasons, I won’t share my bonafide. However, I have already shared the format to be used as a template on my post. Just let them have proof that you don’t intend to secretly move to New Zealand or set up a business. Show that you have good reasons to go back to your country after your trip. Share your past trip history (with visa numbers if you have any), I wrote many other tips on my blog. Do read through, thanks!

Hi, my parents applied for a visitors visa with all supporting documents but have declined stating whether or not the applicant for temporary entry or entry permission is a bona fide applicant. What can be done? i shall apply again but what more documents should i put since they are retired. I

There may be many reasons for a rejection of a bona fide: 1. Supporting documents are not official or don’t look authentic 2. No clear travel plan provided – it must be very clear that your parents are only there for a holiday

If you need more help, I have already shared the format of my Bona fide in the post, to be used as a template. Basically, just let them have solid proof that you don’t intend to secretly move to New Zealand or set up a business. Show that you have good reasons to go back to your country after your trip. Hello Ashfaq, the format is already on the blog post. Thanks.

Thank you so much for this blog. I am a Kiwi and my boyfriend is Indonesian. Our first visa application got denied due to lack of evidence, which was so frustrating. This blog really helped us understand the bona fide aspect and provide more information. Thankfully, we got a 2-month visa on the second try and are in NZ now, the first time I have seen my family in three years!

Hi Carly, I’m glad our article helped you! You and your family take care <3

Hi . Thank you for your info. It would be wonderfull if you could guide me for a visitor visa to visit my fiance who has a resident visa in NZ. During covid-19 outbreak no visitor visa is processing . And we are really frustrated

Hi Noosh, thanks for your inquiry. However, we’re really out of touch with the current Visitor VISA process. Since it’s been 2 years since we applied for it. We would recommend that you call the NZ Immigration office instead. Thanks and wish you the best of luck in getting the VISA!

How To Master a Cover Letter for New Zealand [Examples & Tips]

new zealand tourist visa cover letter sample

Although you might don’t want to, yet in most cases, you need to include a cover letter when applying for a job in New Zealand. NZ cover letter is similar to other countries; it should show the company why you are the right candidate for the job. Take your time to write a personal and customized letter. Never send the generic one; this can ruin your application from the start.

A cover letter is a monumental part of your job application in New Zealand. A good cover letter should answer the main question, which is why the company should hire you. Additionally, it must provide information on how you can bring value to the company and help them with the challenges. A cover letter should showcase the relevant skills and experience you have.

In most cases, businesses and recruiters in New Zealand will require you to attach a customized cover letter. And it’s a good thing for you. In the end, the cover letter is a claim for the role – it’s your chance to highlight and match your experience against the job description and to clearly state what you can offer your potential employer.

If you are looking for a job in New Zealand, I would highly recommend going through the Job Hunter’s handbook made by Careers.govt.nz.

Is a cover letter necessary in New Zealand?

Unfortunately, yes, you need to include a customized cover letter when applying for a job in New Zealand. Almost  half of the recruiters reject applications without a cover letter. A high-quality, customized cover letter tells the manager you are a dedicated professional. It should be only a page long.

A resume or CV alone can show your achievements and qualifications, but it can’t tell the story and explain why you choose this company in particular. That’s why we need a cover letter. It’s also a great tool to show your personality and motivation. It must show the employer you are an asset to their company.

Tips and guidance for a winner cover letter.

So what is a cover letter, and why it’s so important for your job application in New Zealand?

  • Cover letter is your first point of contact with employers .
  • It should fit on one page .
  • It needs to explain why you want this job .
  • It should relate to your CV .
  • It should describe your relevant skills, experience, and accomplishments .
  • It should show the evidence that you have researched the company and that you are the right candidate.

If you follow these simple statements, you should already be able to create a decent letter. Yet, if you want more, read this article to the end and follow the advice.

The winning tactic here is focusing on  them , not just on  you,  which will ultimately make you stand out from other applicants

When writing your cover letter, pay attention to the following:

  • Do very extensive research about the company. Show it in the cover letter.
  • Reflect on the company’s vision.
  • Highlight specific achievements and successes that show you can address the challenges the employer is facing.

  • Address the cover letter to the right person, e.g., the hiring manager or recruiter
  • Be clear and concise
  • Have a structure in the letter – beginning, middle, end
  • Use active words to describe your work – accomplished, achieved, led, created, increased, identified
  • Finish with a call to action and ask for a meeting.
  • Try to be funny
  • Send a generic cover letter — customize each one for the specific job.
  • Forget your full contact details
  • Generic and boring opening paragraph
  • Copy-paste from the CV or job ad
  • Start every sentence with “I”
  • Write more than one page

1. Research about the company and position

new zealand tourist visa cover letter sample

Your knowledge about the company you are applying to work for is crucial. You must also know all the essential details about the advertised position and how your skills and experience fit in.

When someone reads your cover letter, they must be sure you are the right candidate for this position and for this company. That’s why you must include as many tailored to the job ad details as possible (yet not too many).

So, look for information on the company, its key products or services, its mission, and anything else that gives you an insight into them. Notice the most important details and mention them in the cover letter where appropriate.

You might want to check out the company’s website, its executives’ Twitter feeds, and LinkedIn profiles.

The culture of the organization is vital to note. This will influence your communication style. For instance, you might be more casual with start-ups or advertising agencies but more formal with banks and large corporations.

2. Show how you can help

A company hires you to solve a problem or to help with challenging tasks they are unable to manage. Point out the things you can do for a company and which potential results it might bring. Or maybe you already were challenged with similar tasks? Mention it in your cover letter!

3. Why are you a perfect fit?

The second paragraph of your cover letter should give a clear idea to the reader why you are the one and that you will satisfy the company’s specific needs.

Here you should match the keywords mentioned in the job ad with your skills and experience. You also must show the hiring manager why you want this job, not just any job. Include all the enthusiasm and passion you have.

Match your skills with a job ad

Highlight the key skills and qualities in the ad, e.g.:

  • strong written and verbal communication
  • technical skills
  • analytical thinking
  • team player or teamwork
  • problem-solving
  • time management
  • knowledge of software & tools
  • specialized or technical competencies
  • high level of computer competency
  • ability to work well under pressure
  • enthusiasm and initiative
  • excellent customer service

Include them in the cover letter with real-life examples.

Connections matter in New Zealand

new zealand tourist visa cover letter sample

About 70% of all jobs in New Zealand are so-called hidden. They are simply not advertised because hiring managers seek candidates within the company, their circle of colleagues, and people they know before they post a job ad. For that reason, having connections in New Zealand is very crucial.

You are more likely to be invited to an interview if you know a friend of a friend and they got a reference they you rather than just based on your qualifications and experience.

That might be good news for some and bad news for others. Nonetheless, it’s highly recommended to start networking as soon as you land in New Zealand. Join groups, participate in social and professional events, work on your Linkedin profile, and just be proactive.

And if you are lucky to know someone in the company you are applying to work for, mention it in the first sentence or two of your cover letter.

Don’t forget to include

Your cover letter shouldn’t miss these small but key elements:

Your personal value and personality

While skills and experiences are indeed critical, New Zealanders love human connection. If they find you an interesting and nice person, they are more likely to move forward with your application.

Try to be personal in your cover letter; tell them more unique things about you and your experience. Avoid being general at any cost.

Reflect on your experience that relates to the job ad and company profile. What challenges have you faced, and how did you solve them? You also want to provide evidence of the things you mention by using concrete examples, situations, numbers, and facts. For example:

“During the last quarter, my company was challenged by the supply shortage of …We have had 200% more orders than we can ever fulfill. To solve this problem, I was on the lookout for new suppliers for several weeks; after dozens of selling calls, I finally managed to sign a contract with our best supplier so far. I will never come across them otherwise.”

Your enthusiasm

In many cases, people don’t get hired because they aren’t enthusiastic and convincing enough. So, it’s not the lack of skills; it’s your desire and how you show it. If you make it as if it was your dream job, you are more likely to be invited. Avoid at any cost writing in a manner as you are doing a company a favor by working for them.

Hiring managers even say, “Enthusiasm conveys personality.” Some tips that help you to point out your enthusiasm include:

  • Show that you have thought about the job and why you would like to work for them.
  • Why is this company so brilliant? What they do the best? How they stand out?
  • Mention their reputation, performance, and product.
  • Remember, it’s about what you can do for them, not what they can do for you.

NZ cover letter structure

Following the formal structure when piecing together a cover letter is as much as important as its content. So, make sure you stick to New Zealand standards. Here is an example:

Dear [Ms. or Mr. Surname],

  • Opening – Explain why you are writing this letter (add an interesting one-liner summarizing why you’re interested in the role and what you’d bring to their business.)
  • Explain your interest in the job, show knowledge about the company and position
  • Demonstrate your skills and experience related to the job
  • Explain why you will fit into this role and which value you will bring to the company
  • Sign off and offer them to contact you

Yours sincerely,

Your name – Andrew Black.

Make sure you check your cover letter via Grammarly for spelling and grammar mistakes!

Cover letter introduction

The introduction sentences will determine whether the hiring manager will read on or skip your resume. Start your cover letter in an unconventional way and hold the reader’s interest. Here are some tips for a stellar introduction:

  • Highlight your achievements in the industry.
  • Display your passion and enthusiasm.
  • Mention some names and numbers.

A no-go cover letter introduction looks like this:

In response to your posting for the Digital Marketing Manager position, I would like to express my interest in participating in the recruitment process. As a digital marketing manager with 8+ years of experience, I am optimistic that I would succeed in this role.

Top cover letter example

Since you already know how to write the header, here is only the main part of the cover letter.

” I am writing regarding the Marketing Manager position you currently have open. As a marketer with over 5 years of experience managing small and larger teams, I would love to take a challenge and work for your company. Marketing is my passion, so it’s to achieve monthly goals, generate new leads & sales, and train the team for success.

In my previous role at (company name), I reached not only the set marketing goals but exceeded them by 80% and, in some months, even 120%. Your company (name) already has brilliant strategies in place, you use paid advertising, social media, and outreach, but I would add other channels to ramp up the reach and revenue. I am experienced and knowledgeable in the SEO scene; hence we can explore new opportunities for your business in this area of marketing.

My previous team of marketing assistants was great! I love to work with people and guide them in our current strategies. At the same time, responsibility for people does not make me stressed or scared but ignites my motivation to bring even better results so we can all be proud as a team.

Besides, my Master’s degree in Business taught me fundamental knowledge about organizations, management, strategy, and agility, which I would be happy to apply when working for (company).

It will be great to talk in person one day. You can reach me at 123456789 any time or via email at [email protected] to arrange an interview. Thank you for your consideration, I look forward to hearing from you.

Cover letter for a visa application

Im most cases, Immigration New Zealand, will request a cover or so-called motivational letter together with your visa application. This is generally a less complex document that you would write for the employer.

Your cover letter for a visa should include:

  • Reasons why you are moving or visiting New Zealand
  • How are you going to support yourself
  • Demonstration of how you meet the criteria for the visa

The content of the cover letter will vary depending on the visa type you are applying for. If it’s, for instance, to join a partner in New Zealand, you should include your relationship to them and explain it briefly.

Therefore, your cover letter should target your visa category’s main requirements.

When I was applying for a student visa, my cover letter described why I decided to study in New Zealand and what are my plans after my studies. Immigration New Zealand also mentioned in their requirements that the cover letter must include these details.

How to Write a Convincing Cover Letter for a NZ Partnership Visa Application

How to Write a Convincing Cover Letter for a NZ Partnership Visa Application

Applying for a partnership-based visa can be a lengthy and complicated process. However, one of the most important parts of your application is the cover letter.

The cover letter helps you explain your relationship, demonstrate how you meet the criteria, and persuade Immigration New Zealand (INZ) to grant you a visa.

Many applicants think that writing a brief letter stating their connection and love for their partner is enough, but that’s usually not the case. In reality, the cover letter allows you to showcase your relationship and convince the INZ case officer that your relationship is genuine and committed. Hence writing a compelling cover letter is crucial.

In this blog post, we will provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to write a convincing cover letter for a partnership-based visa application. By following our tips and tricks, you will be able to structure your letter, address potential issues, and include all the necessary information to make your application a success.

  • Understand the eligibility criteria:

Before you begin writing your cover letter, it is essential to understand the eligibility requirements for your partnership visa application. You should read the INZ website to determine the main requirements for your visa category. Be sure to review the requirements carefully so that you can tailor your letter to meet the specific criteria.

For example, if you are applying for a partnership-based resident visa, you need to demonstrate that you have lived together for at least 12 months before applying for the visa.

  • Structure your letter:

In the cover letter, you need to describe your relationship with your partner and how it has developed over time.

Your cover letter should consist of four main parts: an introduction, your relationship history, how you meet the eligibility criteria, and a conclusion.

Start with an attention-grabbing introduction that sets out the purpose of your letter and your reasons for applying for the visa. Next, provide a detailed account of your relationship, how you met, and your plans for the future. The third part of your letter should answer how you meet the criteria for your visa category. You should be explicit in demonstrating how your relationship meets each criterion. Finally, conclude your letter by summarizing why you believe that you and your partner meet the requirements for the visa category.

  • Include supporting evidence:

Your cover letter should include any supporting evidence that demonstrates your relationship meets the criteria for the visa category.

It’s not enough to say that you are in a committed relationship ; you must demonstrate it with evidence. For example, you can provide photographs, proof of joint bank accounts, or joint utility bills that show that you have been living together. You should also explain each piece of evidence and how it helps to support your claim. Be sure to provide a clear and concise explanation so the reader understands each document’s relevance.

Failing to provide evidence to support your claims can harm your application and lead to a visa refusal.

  • Address potential issues:

If you anticipate there may be any potential issues with your application; you should address them in your cover letter. This may include any previous visa refusals or convictions. You should explain the circumstances surrounding the issue and how you have taken steps to rectify the situation. It is important to address these issues proactively, as it demonstrates your transparency and willingness to comply with the relevant immigration instructions of INZ.

  • Proofread and edit your letter:

Your cover letter should be well-written, clear, and concise. Be sure to proofread and edit your letter carefully before submitting your application. Look for any grammatical errors or spelling mistakes, and ensure that your letter flows logically from one point to the next.

Writing a convincing cover letter for your partnership visa application is crucial in your visa journey. By following our step-by-step guide, you can structure your letter, address any potential issues, and provide the necessary evidence to demonstrate that you and your partner meet the requirements for the visa category. Remember to tailor your letter to meet the specific criteria and to proofread and edit your letter before submitting your application. With determination, effort, and the right amount of preparation, you can increase your chances of success and achieve your dreams of living in New Zealand with your partner.

SAMPLE COVER LETTERS for VISA APPLICATION: Korea, Schengen, Australia

SAMPLE COVER LETTERS for VISA APPLICATION: Korea, Schengen, Australia

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

Employment certificate, financial documents, and income tax return (ITR) are the staples of most visa applications. But there is one document that is usually overlooked — the cover letter.

A cover letter isn’t always a requirement when applying for a visa. However, it’s something that we often recommend to add to your pile of documents, especially if there is no interview and you have some explaining to do.

You see, sometimes, things don’t always fit the mold perfectly. There are cases wherein you can’t provide the exact document needed, but you have a very good alternative. Or maybe you just can’t provide something at all, but you have a perfectly valid reason. Or perhaps you’re traveling with a group or for a special purpose. These instances could probably benefit from a well-crafted explanation to give the visa officer a clearer picture of your situation.

When I apply for a visa, I usually submit a cover letter regardless of whether or not it’s one of the requirements. I always want to give a summary of my application and clarify some aspects that may be prone to misinterpretation.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

What should be in a cover letter?

For me, a good cover letter must be able to provide the following:

  • A short introduction about yourself.
  • Your travel dates and the purpose of your trip
  • If traveling with a group: your companions and your relationship with them
  • If sponsored: your sponsor’s name, your relationship with them, and the reason why they are willing to sponsor you
  • If you’re missing some requirements: the reason why you won’t be able to provide them and the alternatives you are submitting instead
  • If applying for a double entry or multiple entry visa: the reason why you need to be allowed more than one entry
  • A quick rundown of the destinations you will be visiting
  • A quick summary of your travel history (if any), highlighting that you have NEVER violated visa rules in the past
  • A promise to return to your home country in time

Looks like a lot, huh? But here’s the thing: According to a couple of friends who used to work as visa officers at strict embassies, they usually had very little time to assess each application. Hence, if you’re going to make a cover letter, go straight to the point . One page should be enough. The key is being concise — finding the balance between giving enough information and keeping it short and sweet.

Here are some samples. I intentionally used complicated situations to give you an idea how I usually explain them. If they don’t apply to you, feel free to modify these to match your case. Please use this only as a model for your own cover letter. Please do not copy-paste the whole thing without adjustments.

Hello, I will be applying for a Japan visa and will submit a cover letter din. I have a few questions:

  • If I am traveling with friends pero we will be submitting individual applications, do I need to include that in the cover letter na I am with them on this trip?
  • Do you need to submit all your savings account o kahit isa nalang?
Do I need to do that?

Thank you sa travel guides. Super helpful. :)

This is for Japan ha.

1. You may indicate your companions. Ako I prefer na imention sila to show na travel with friends talaga.

2. OK lang kahit isa lang kung sa tingin mo strong enough ung account na yun. Pwede ring madami if feeling mo di enough ung isa lang.

3. Naeempty ba ung payroll account when u transfer?

4. Bank cert lang naman ang need ng Japan so kahit walang statement, ok lang.

5. If hindi ka magsusubmit ng statement, di na need iexplain kasi hindi lalabas. :)

I plan to visit Canada and have started my visa application. I selected visit friend for purpose instead of tourism as I would like to be fully honest with my application. My very purpose is to be with my boyfriend and meet his family and friends. Touring comes as a bonus. Would it be fine to add captions or narrations on the pdf document together with our pictures as proof? I also have our hotel and tour bookings and his boarding passes on the two times that he has visited me here in PH. This is the Proof of Relationship section on the application visa.

How to write an NZ cover letter (with examples and templates)

Along with your CV, a cover letter is essential to any NZ job application. Let's get you started.

Using a cover letter template and examples are a great way to get started

Every New Zealand job application should include a cover letter.

This document is key to showing an employer you’re serious about their vacancy, and for demonstrating what you bring to the table . Despite its importance, many people aren’t sure how to write a cover letter – and their applications suffer as a result.

That’s why we’ve created this guide, giving you advice on everything from what to include, to how to lay it out.

We’ve also snuck in a few examples to make life even easier for you … aren’t we nice?

Cover letters vs. CVs: what’s the difference?

To understand the role cover letters play in job applications, it’s important to realise how they differ from CVs:

1. Purpose:

CVs give a broad picture of you as an applicant – providing details such as educational background and employment history . By contrast, a cover letter targets why you want this specific role, and how your skills and experience make you a great candidate.

While there will be areas of overlap as you select qualifications or abilities to draw out in your cover letter, it definitely should not be an elongated version of your CV.

An NZ cover letter should be no longer than one page, while CVs are usually between one and two.

The most obvious visual difference between these documents and CVs hinges around bullet points.

While your CV should be a bullet point bonanza, cover letters favour full sentences. That’s not to say you can’t have any bullets in a cover letter, just use them more sparingly.

It’s not always easy to know what to put in your cover letter.

You should include a cover letter with every job application.

What to include in a cover letter

1. your contact info, the date and the business’ address.

At the top of your cover letter should be:

  • Your full name, contact details and home address
  • The date you submit the application
  • The business’ postal address

It should look like this:

Here's how to start your cover letter.

Head up your cover letter like this.

2. Your opener

People worry about how to start a cover letter , but there’s a simple formula and structure for getting this right:

Make it personal : start with ‘dear’, and address it to a person – i.e. the hiring manager. If their name isn’t in the job listing, try a good old fashioned stalk of the company website, or ring the business and find out. ‘To whom it may concern’ is a no go.

Make it clear : organisations often list multiple vacancies at a time, so make it obvious which position you’re applying for. A sentence like, ‘I’m writing to apply for the Marketing Assistant role, as advertised on Trade Me Jobs’, will do the trick.

Make it punchy : next, add a snappy one-liner summing up why you’re interested in the role and what you’d bring to their business. Remember, you can go into more detail in the interview itself. For example:

You have options when choosing your cover letter intro.

3. Why them

A common cover letter mistake is to only focus on yourself. Before choosing you, employers want to know why you’re choosing them. This helps sort candidates who are genuinely passionate about their organisation from those who are mass applying to anything and everything.

Warning : this section is not about inflating the hiring manager's ego by flattering the company – be positive, but be thoughtful.

Your cover letter should tell the hiring manager why you want to work there.

Now, it’s time to sell yourself.

This section of your cover letter is where you highlight your most relevant skills and experience.

You can draw on anything from previous work experience to certificates and qualifications. The important bit is linking whatever you mention to the job – simply listing skills is not the answer.

To do this effectively, you need to carefully study the job ad and identify what capabilities the employer values most. If your Trade Me Jobs Profile is up-to-date, you can then quickly skim your skills and experience to find those which most closely match the job description.

Top tip: the more detail you can give, the better. Helped raise sales? Great. Helped raise sales by 6%? Even better.

Use your cover letter to highlight core relevant skills.

If you want to add some extra skills or information to this section, a bullet point list is a good option. Note : only do this after introducing your headline examples in full sentence form, as above, and keep your list to three or four concise bullets.

5. Signing off

The end of your cover letter should (politely) prompt the reader to get in touch with you to arrange the next steps. Make sure you end on a high, and continue the energy from earlier in your closing sentence, for example:

Sign off your cover letter with a call to action.

How to format a cover letter

With your content sorted, it’s now about nailing the visuals. Cover letters are usually easier than CVs in this regard, as they’re laid out like a traditional letter. However, there are a few things to bear in mind:

  • What font should I use? Keep it simple, and the same as on your CV. If your font is hard to read, or too small, the letter will end up in the wrong pile.
  • How long should a cover letter be? New Zealand cover letters should be under one page long.
  • Should I use paragraphs? Would you read huge, unbroken chunks of text? We doubt it, so make sure to break up your cover letters into paragraphs.
  • What are the correct cover letter margins? Leave these at their default setting so your cover letter has plenty of blank space, and doesn’t look crowded.

All done? Not quite.

Perhaps the most important stage of cover letter writing is proofreading. After all that hard work, you don’t want a few silly typos or poor punctuation letting you down.

So check it yourself, then get someone else to have a look, then have a final glance.

Once you’re happy, it’s time to attach it to your application, and hit send.

How to write a great stand out Cover Letter

Our Job Search Coach Jannie Allen shares her insider tips.

Jannie says:

"The cover letter is a claim for the role – it is your chance to highlight and match your experience against the job description and to clearly state what you can offer your potential employer.
It is a targeted single-page document to the person who advertised the position. It is often your first point of contact with an employer/recruiter to get them interested in reading your CV and interviewing you."

Your Cover Letter should show:

- Why you are interested in the role - Your relevant skills, experience, and accomplishments - Evidence that you have researched the company and that you would be a good fit.

Compassion icon

Structuring the Cover Letter:

Before you start the main part of the letter, write your mobile number, email address and Skype ID at the top left-hand side of the letter. Follow this by the date and then write Re: followed by the title of the job you are applying for and a reference number if it’s provided. Check the listing carefully as this reference is often at the end of the ad. Then follow with a greeting, addressing the person by name (if at all possible).
Open with a strong statement giving the reason you are applying for the position.
What you have you been doing, relevant to the role you are applying for. Be skills/achievements focused and focused on what you can bring to the company rather than what the company can do for you.
What kind of person are you (hint: mention your qualities which are aligned to the role)
Your motivation for wanting to settle in NZ and why you want to live in that particular area. Invite the reader to contact you if they have any questions about your application.

Writing the Cover Letter:

Jannie's advice:.

If a contact person is mentioned in the listing, it is recommended that you make a connection, preferably by phoning them, so that you can introduce yourself and ask some questions about the role. That way your application will stand out. ‍

In conclusion, in your cover letter you need to present a strong case for the best matched skills and experience against the job description.

Never send out a generic letter as this is one way to communicate that you have not tried to research the role or the company, and that you are not genuinely interested.

How I Got My New Zealand Visitor Visa!

Hi there folks! Once again I’m gonna share with you another visa application story I’ve just experienced earlier this year. This time it’s about getting a New Zealand visitor visa. Last year, I was planning to travel to New Zealand and explore key cities such as Auckland and Queenstown. Also, not to mention the place where The Lord of the Rings was filmed in! And that is none other than the Middle Earth’s Hobbiton! But there’s a caveat, as a Philippine passport holder, we are required to obtain a visitor visa to enter New Zealand. In short, we are not part of visa waiver countries and territories. With this in mind, let’s hope and pray that someday, New Zealand will open its door to us visa-free!

This post is all about getting an NZ visitor visa. On the other hand, for other visa options, please visit Immigration New Zealand’s website here .

So without further ado, please see the guide below to apply for an NZ visitor visa. With a Visitor visa, you can stay for a maximum of 9 months.

Steps to Apply for Visitor Visa

First of all, VFS Global is the partner of the New Zealand embassy that receives visa applications.

There are three types of visa application: 1.) Walk-in or via representative (provided the representative has authorisation letter) 2.) Send via courier 3.) Online application

Because I am a busy person, I chose the online application because it saves time. Please see step by step guide to accomplish online application form:

Immigration NZ Step 1

9.) The next pages will basically ask information about your identity, and contact details, visit details, health details, work history, other contacts, etc. Take note guys that you MUST answer the questions TRUTHFULLY. Because they will definitely do a background check and if they’d find out that you lied to immigration that will affect your future visa applications. Therefore, please read carefully and answer truthfully.

10.) At the end of the application, you will be required to upload your documents mostly in PDF format, not more than 10MB. This is very important. However, f you upload more than the recommended size, the system will throw an exception error message.

Requirements/Documents

So I will list here the required documents you would be needing to submit online.

  • Passport-sized Photo – Please refer to the acceptable photos here: https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-zealand-visas/apply-for-a-visa/tools-and-information/acceptable-photos . The photo should be in .jpg format.
  • Passport Bio Data Page – this can be found on page 2 of your Philippine passport.
  • If you have a sponsor , kindly get a signed letter from the sponsor (employer, family, friend or relative) that indicates they will be sponsoring your trip.
  • If your sponsor is a family member, friend or relative, you must submit a proof of relationship with the sponsor. Proofs can be photos together, birth certificates, etc.
  • Confirmed Return Travel Tickets – this is a bit tricky since you would not know if you would be approved or not. I heard that there were applicants who provided reserved tickets and their applications were fortunately approved. In my case, my brother and I booked our return tickets via PAL and submitted the screenshot praying that we would be approved. Thanks to God that in just 4 days we received an email from them that our applications were approved 🙂 So it’s up to you if you would just provide reserved tickets. Anyway, the embassy will call you if they need the confirmed tickets from you.
  • Certificate of Employment – if employed, you must provide a letter of absence from your employer.
  • Other Evidences that You’re a Bonafide Applicant – this can be proof of assets such as cars, real estate properties, business titles, ITR, additional financial statements, past stamps or travel visas, or a cover letter. According to the Immigration New Zealand website, you need to provide at least NZ$1000 a month to support your trip, so it’s better to have NZ$1000 or more in your bank account. What we also did is to create a cover letter detailing that our purpose to travel to New Zealand is purely for a personal vacation to celebrate my birthday.

Finally, after accomplishing the forms and submitting completely all required documents, you may now go to VFS to submit your passport. Or you can wait for their email saying that you can now submit your passport. For this reason, you can do either way.

Submission of requirements

To submit your passport you have three (3) options:

  • Submit in person – VFS is open from Mondays-Fridays, except for holidays. Operating hours are from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM (Manila) and 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM (Cebu). You will need to pay VFS a handling fee of Php 570 . Please don’t forget to keep your payment receipt as it will be needed to retrieve your passport later on.

Manila Address: VFS Global Services Philippines Private Inc., Mezzanine Floor Unit M01, Ecoplaza Building, 2305 Chino Roces Avenue Extension Makati City, Metro Manila 1231 Cebu Address: VFS Global Services Philippines Private Inc., 9th Floor, Keppel Center, Unit 905, Samar Loop cor. Cardinal Rosales Avenue, Cebu Business Park, Cebu City 6000

  • Submit via a Representative – provided that the representative has your signed authorisation letter and a copy of your valid ID and the representative.
  • Submit via Courier – You can submit your passport via courier or via the NZVAC or New Zealand Visa Application Centre’s courier service. NZVAC can pick it up from your home for a Php 380 fee.

And there you go! Normally, the processing time takes 20 business days. Of course, this depends if you submitted completely all the documents required. Typically if you have first world visas it will be easier for you to get approved. Hence, I received the approval within 4 working days because I already have a US visa. In other words, these powerful visas, like the US, are your gateway to other first world countries.

To give you an idea of the timeline, kindly refer below:

  • February 26: Submitted my online application
  • February 28: Got an email to submit our passports to VFS.
  • March 1: Submitted passports to VFS.
  • March 7: Received an email that our applications were approved 🙂

Additional Notes

Not to mention, when I tried to call on VFS, they told me that our passports were ready for pick up last March 4. While other applicants receive their visas on an average of 3-5 working days, I got mine for almost 2 working days! I strongly believe that this was due to my US visa and other travel records and stamps on my passport. As a result, I became a happy camper 🙂

Before I forget to say, you can retrieve your passport from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM Mondays to Fridays (Manila) and from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM (Cebu). Always be early when claiming your passports as a practice. Being an early bird is such a nice trait indeed!

Do you plan to visit New Zealand someday? I highly recommend to add it to your bucket list as one of the countries to travel to. Let me know if you have any question and I’ll try my best to answer you as soon as I can. Furthermore, follow me on Facebook , Twitter and Instagram .

Hello Ven! In my experience, there was no medical certificate required.

Is it necessary to include the Itinerary as I am planning to go to visit my friend for 45 days.

What if I don’t show them the return ticket? Is it highly risky?

Hi there! Apologies as I have just read your comment. As a rule of thumb, it is much better to show them your return ticket so the IO would not suspect that you would to overstay in their country.

How to write a cover letter employers will want to read.

What's on this page?

Cover letter basics, make your cover letter easy to read, what to put in your cover letter, cover letter template, find out more.

Your cover letter needs to show:

  • why you are interested in the job
  • how your skills and experience match the job
  • why an employer should read your CV.

Remember to:

  • check your cover letter for spelling and grammar
  • send your cover letter as a Word document
  • also copy your cover letter into the message box of the email.

To make your cover letter look good:

  • use a black, easy to read font in one size
  • use simple language and be warm and friendly
  • use positive phrases like 'I have' and 'I can'
  • use bullet points to list information
  • avoid weak words like 'some knowledge' or 'fairly experienced'
  • avoid starting each sentence with 'I'
  • avoid repeating your whole CV
  • avoid photos or images
  • keep your letter to one page.

1. Contact details

Start with your contact details. For example:

Lizzie Long 1 Short Street Middelsburgh Auckland 9999 09 999 9999 [email protected]

Then the date you send the cover letter. For example:

10 January 2019

Then the advertiser's name, organisation, address and email. For example:

Reginald Farnham ABC Sales 85 Tuesday Road Papakura Auckland 7777 [email protected]

Start with 'Dear ...'. Use the name given in the job advertisement. If there isn't one, call the organisation to find out the name or use the name of the organisation.

Under the greeting put the position details. For example:

I am writing to apply for the Sales Assistant vacancy (vacancy number 40568) at ABC Sales, as advertised on Trade Me.

3. Explain your interest in the job

In the next paragraph, explain your interest in the job and how you will fit into the organisation. Be enthusiastic and use positive language.

I have been a customer of ABC Sales for several years and have always been impressed by the quality of service I have received. I am enthusiastic and professional, and I believe I would fit well into the company's team culture and contribute to the ongoing success of the sales department.

4. Link your skills and experience to the job

In one paragraph link your experience, skills and qualifications to the job. Use two or three key examples.

Research the employer online and show how your skills can be useful to the employer.

For the past two years I have worked as a sales assistant at a busy shoe store, which has enabled me to develop excellent customer service skills. I am now looking for a new challenge that will provide me with the opportunity to further develop my retail sales career. In support of my application I have attached a copy of my CV. It shows that I will bring important skills to the position, including: time management and strong organisational skills a high level of customer service cash handling and sales ability motivation and dedication.

5. Ask the employer to contact you

Finally, ask the employer to contact you to talk more about your application.

For example:

I would enjoy having the opportunity to discuss my application with you and how I could use my skills to benefit ABC Sales. Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely Lizzie Long

New Zealand Visa Invitation Letter in 2024 [Samples Included]

What is a visa invitation letter.

A visa invitation letter is a personal document that explains the reason why you’re visiting a country and often includes details about your stay, including where you’ll be staying, how long you plan to stay, and other specifics.

In New Zealand’s context, an invitation letter can be used for various visa categories, including visitor visas, family stream visas, and some business visas.

Why is it Important?

For New Zealand’s immigration authorities, an invitation letter:

  • Verifies your purpose: It makes clear why you’re visiting the country.
  • Builds trust: A local contact vouching for you can increase the credibility of your application.
  • Adds clarity: Especially if you’re visiting for unique reasons, an invitation letter can provide context that might not be evident from other application materials.

Who Can Write It?

Anyone who is a legal resident or citizen of New Zealand can write an invitation letter. This could be a family member, friend, business contact, or any other acquaintance.

They should ideally have a clear understanding of your purpose of visit and a genuine relationship with you.

New Zealand Visa Invitation Letter Requirements

While there’s no fixed format for the letter, certain elements are vital:

  • Header: The letter should have the date, the invitee’s full name, and address at the top.
  • Introduction of the Host: This section should provide details about the host, including their full name, date of birth, address in New Zealand, occupation, and their immigration status (citizen/permanent resident).
  • Details of the Visitor: Information about the invitee, such as full name, address, date of birth, relationship with the host, and occupation.
  • Purpose of Visit: Clearly state the reason for the visit, be it tourism, family reunion, business, or other purposes.
  • Duration and Dates: Mention the length of the stay and the specific dates, if known.
  • Accommodation and Financial Details: Explain where the invitee will stay and who will cover the expenses.
  • Closing Statement: This should include a declaration that the visitor will adhere to New Zealand’s laws and leave before the visa expiry.
  • Signature: The host should sign at the end.

What Are The necessary Supporting Documents?

In 2024, the New Zealand immigration department emphasizes transparency. Hence, attaching relevant supporting documents can strengthen the invitation. Examples include:

  • Proof of the host’s legal status in New Zealand (passport, residence card).
  • Financial evidence if the host claims to support the visitor’s expenses.
  • Proof of relationship, if applicable (photographs, emails, etc.).

What Comes After the Invitation Letter?

Once the invitation letter is drafted and necessary supporting documents are collected, the potential visitor can include these with their visa application.

The New Zealand immigration department will then evaluate the application as a whole, taking into account all provided documents and the credibility of the invitation letter.

Does An Invitation Letter Guarantee Success?

Even with a well-drafted invitation letter, visa approvals are never guaranteed.

Factors like the visitor’s personal circumstances, previous travel history, and overall application coherence play a role.

If a visa application is rejected, carefully review the reason and consider consulting with an immigration expert before reapplying.

Are Digital Invitation Letters Accepted?

The world has undeniably turned towards digitization, and visa processes aren’t exempt from this transformation. As of 2024, New Zealand, like many countries, has incorporated digital elements into its immigration process.

Online Submission: While the traditional method of mailing or hand-delivering documents is still valid, there’s a growing trend of visa applicants submitting their invitation letters and other necessary documents online through designated platforms. This not only speeds up the processing time but also minimizes the risk of physical documents getting lost or damaged.

Digital Verification: To counteract fraudulent claims, New Zealand immigration might employ digital tools for verification. For instance, they could cross-reference the details of the inviter through public databases, social media, or even use video calls to verify the authenticity of the relationship and the claims made in the letter.

E-Invitations: Some applicants and their inviters are experimenting with e-invitations, complete with secure QR codes that can be scanned by immigration officers to retrieve digital copies of the invitation letter and supporting documents.

What Are The Legal Implications Of The Invitation Letter?

An invitation letter isn’t just a casual document—it’s a declaration that comes with its own set of responsibilities and potential legal implications, particularly for the host.

Obligations of the Host: The inviter, by writing the letter, is vouching for the invitee. If the visitor violates visa conditions, such as overstaying, the host might face questioning. It’s vital for the inviter to ensure they’re inviting someone trustworthy.

False Statements: Providing misleading or false information in the invitation letter can lead to legal consequences. Both the inviter and invitee can be held liable for false declarations.

Financial Commitments: If the host has declared that they’ll financially support the visitor, they should be prepared to prove their financial capacity and be aware that they might be legally bound to these commitments.

What are the Types of New Zealand Visa Invitation Letters?

Visa invitation letters, while serving the fundamental purpose of inviting a foreign national to a host country, can differ based on the nature and intention of the visit. Here are the primary types of visa invitation letters:

1. Personal or Tourist Invitation: This type of letter is used when someone is visiting friends or family in New Zealand or simply touring the country. It typically includes:

  • Personal details of both the host and the guest.
  • The relationship between the two parties.
  • Duration and specifics of the visit, such as sightseeing plans or family events.
  • Accommodation arrangements, highlighting if the guest will stay with the host or at a hotel.

2. Business Invitation: Used for business-related visits, this letter is typically drafted on a company’s official letterhead. It outlines:

  • Details about the inviting company, including its address, contact information, and nature of business.
  • Purpose of the visit, such as meetings, conferences, trainings, or trade shows.
  • Duration of the stay and possible future collaborations.
  • Details about financial responsibilities during the visit.

3. Medical Treatment Invitation: When someone is traveling to New Zealand for medical reasons, this letter becomes pivotal. It would usually encompass:

  • Detailed medical reports or reasons for seeking treatment in New Zealand.
  • Hospital or clinic details where the treatment will be obtained.
  • Potential duration of treatment and recovery.
  • Details of the medical guarantor or the person responsible for the medical bills.

4. Event or Workshop Invitation: This is for those attending specific events, like conferences, seminars, workshops, or cultural events. It typically features:

  • Details about the event: date, venue, duration, and purpose.
  • The relevance of the attendee’s participation.
  • Any provisions or responsibilities of the host, such as accommodations or fees.

5. Study or Research Invitation: This invitation is specific for those visiting for educational purposes, be it short-term courses, workshops, or research projects. The letter generally consists of:

  • Course or research details.
  • Duration and nature of the study or research.
  • Details of the institution or research facility.
  • Possible outcomes or benefits from the visit.

6. Sports or Artistic Performance Invitation: Athletes, artists, or performers visiting for an event or performance would need this type of letter. It should include:

  • Nature of the event, competition, or performance.
  • Details about the hosting organization or agency.
  • Duration and specifics of the stay.
  • Any commitments or contracts related to the visit.

Can a Non-New Zealand Citizen Residing in New Zealand Issue an Invitation Letter?

Yes, a non-New Zealand citizen residing in New Zealand can issue an invitation letter, provided they meet certain criteria:

  • Legal Residency : They must have legal residency status in New Zealand (e.g., work visa, student visa, permanent residency).
  • Proof of Residency : Include a copy of their residency permit or visa in the application.
  • Commitment and Responsibility : The letter should state their commitment to hosting the visitor and any responsibilities they will undertake during the visitor’s stay.

The key is to demonstrate the inviter’s legal status and their capability to support the visitor’s stay.

What Happens if There are Discrepancies Between the Invitation Letter and the Visa Application?

Discrepancies between the invitation letter and the visa application can lead to complications:

  • Visa Processing Delays : Inconsistencies may cause delays in processing the visa application.
  • Additional Verification : The New Zealand immigration authorities might request further clarification or additional documents.
  • Risk of Visa Denial : Significant discrepancies could lead to the denial of the visa application.

Applicants should ensure that all information in the invitation letter aligns with the details provided in their visa application.

Do New Zealand Visa Invitation Letters Require Notarization?

Notarization of visa invitation letters for New Zealand is generally not required:

  • Formal Letter : The letter should be formal and include all necessary details but does not need to be notarized.
  • Authenticity and Accuracy : Focus on the authenticity and accuracy of the information provided.
  • Supporting Documents : Instead of notarization, attaching supporting documents (like proof of residency status of the inviter) can strengthen the application.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can i send a digital copy of the invitation letter or is a hard copy required.

In most instances, a scanned copy of the invitation letter sent via email suffices. However, having an original hard copy can be beneficial if requested during the visa application review.

How long should I wait after sending an invitation letter before the invitee applies for the visa?

There’s no mandatory waiting period. Once the invitee receives the letter, they can start the visa application process immediately, provided they have all the other required documents.

Can I use one invitation letter for multiple invitees?

Generally, it’s advisable to draft individual invitation letters for each invitee. This ensures clarity and caters to each invitee’s specific purpose and details of the visit.

If the visa is denied, can the invitation letter be reused for a new application?

Yes, the same invitation letter can be reused if it remains valid (i.e., the dates and details haven’t changed). However, it might be beneficial to review the letter to ensure that it meets all requirements and is as clear and detailed as possible.

Is there an expiry date for an invitation letter?

Invitation letters don’t typically have an “expiry date.” However, they should be timely and relevant to the visa application. If there’s a significant delay between the letter issuance and the visa application, it may be prudent to issue a new, updated letter.

Does the invitation letter guarantee visa approval?

No, the invitation letter is just one component of the visa application. While it provides context and justification for the visit, the final visa decision rests on various factors evaluated by the New Zealand immigration authorities.

SOP for New Zealand Visitor Visa

by Shubham | Dec 1, 2022 | SOP Writing | 0 comments

New Zealand combines a picturesque setting with amazing technology. It’s a destination unlike any other, with ancient glaciers, snow-capped mountains,  rolling hills, and copious amounts of wine. Furthermore, New Zealand has been one of the best places in the world for stargazing. It is also well-known for being one of the best skydiving destinations in the world. Who doesn’t want to visit such a country? But is it that simple to visit New Zealand? For a New Zealand tourist visa, you may need to write an SOP. This document should explain why you want to visit the country.

A visitor Visa SOP is a letter in which you clarify why you want to visit the country and who you are visiting. Is it a family member, friend, or other acquaintance? It may appear simple, but writing down all of the details in a way that convinces the visa officer to recognize your application is a time-consuming task.

Document Required

Individuals seeking to visit New Zealand on a tourist visa must ensure that they meet the following basic requirements:

  • Latest passport-size photographs (2)
  • Duly filled and signed application form
  • Fee payment receipt
  • Medical certificate
  • Original passport
  • Proof of return – air tickets
  • Proof of financial stability

Points To Consider While Writing An SOP For New Zealand Visa

In comparison to some of the other countries, visa approval for New Zealand is somewhat difficult. As a result, you must make sure that everything is done correctly. Here are some pointers to help you write a strong SOP as part of the process:

  • The purpose of the visit must be crystal clear: Everyone has a different reason for visiting the country. Many people are concerned about how to present their purpose in their SOP. The purpose of your visit should always be stated clearly in the SOP.
  • The word limit:  There is usually no word limit when writing an SOP for New Zealand Tourist Visa, but keeping it under 1000 words is recommended. Include all necessary details in the SOP in a clear and concise manner.
  • Tone and writing style: Because the SOP is a formal document, you must maintain a formal tone throughout the document. However, the tone should not be too formal in order to avoid appearing too rigid. It should also avoid taking a casual tone to avoid becoming informal. The best approach is to keep the SOP conversational and neutral.
  • Parameters: Specific parameters should be mentioned in your SOP. These include information about your visit, trip sponsorship, the length of your stay, and so on.

How To Write an SOP for New Zealand?

Check that the format for the SOP for Visitor Visa is correct and up to date. The sections listed below are always required in your SOP for New Zealand.

  • Why you want to visit New Zealand: The first and foremost thing your SOP must have is the reason behind why you want to visit New Zealand. It could be because of education, travel, work, meeting someone, anything
  • What places in the country?:  This includes your entire itinerary after entering the country. You can say who you’re visiting and what relationship you have with the person. Apart from the meeting, you must include any plans to visit popular places in your SOP. This will provide the Visa officer with information about your trip, and she is more likely to grant your Visitor Visa application.
  • Staying arrangements: Mention the plans you’ve made for your stay. Whether you’re staying at a friend’s house or a hotel. If you are not staying with a friend, you must specify your intended accommodation and a rough itinerary for your visit. If you intend to stay in a hotel, please include the names of the hotels you intend to visit. This gives the impression that you are well-prepared for your trip to the country.
  • How has your trip been funded? Now your trip to New Zealand could either be self-financed or you might have a sponsor. In both situations, the financial status must be told clearly. If the trip is self-financed, the source must be mentioned along with specific bank account details. However, if the trip is sponsored, mention the name of the sponsor, his relationship with you, and the reason behind getting the sponsorship.
  • Plans on returning to your native country: This is the most frequently overlooked question in an SOP. Answering this question demonstrates to the visa officer that you intend to return to your home country rather than permanently settle there.  To make the approach more solid, you could mention your family ties and allocated property.
  • List of non-submitted documents: It is very important to list out all the documents that you were not able to submit and describe the reason behind them.

Red flags for visa officers

Visa Officers in New Zealand look forward to knowing more about the person coming to their country. Hence, they look for red flags or clues in the SOP to determine whether the person intends to return and stay illegally in the country.

  • Personal information: The officer inquires about your family, children, and so on.
  • Travel history: Provides the officer with valuable information. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a frequent traveler, they can tell how eager you are to return.
  • Previous visa rejection history: The visa officer is also curious about previous rejections.
  • Criminal record: Obviously, no country wants an individual with a criminal record in their country, so they will investigate it.

Mistakes To Avoid While writing a Visitor Visa SOP for New Zealand

  • Long and insignificant content: Including extraneous details is an easy way to get rejected.
  • Poor grammar: Grammatical, spelling, and typographical errors all degrade the quality of your SOP.
  • Making use of fillers: Excessive use of unnecessary words and vague statements can reduce your chances of being chosen. Because each word in the SOP is valuable, you must be economical.
  • The visa officer will be uninterested in your application if the SOP is unstructured or improperly structured.
  • Plagiarized content in the SOP is a big no-no

Final Thoughts

A promising SOP would make it easier for you to obtain visa clearance. As a result, you should seek the assistance of the best SOP Writers in India who can assist you in expressing your thoughts and dreams in a formal and unique manner. Together, we started looking into the options we had however after all of the research we did, we were still not 100% confident in doing this by ourselves. We approached a migration agent to handle the application as we want to be able to build a life together. When we made the decision to lodge this visa, it wasn’t difficult at all. At no point did the financial expense or various requirements bother us. We are happy to meet all of the requirements and undertake any special requests to secure our future together.

I am able to count on[insert partner name] and at the end of each day, there isn’t another person in the world I could imagine coming home to.[Insert partner name] is such an incredible person and I’m so happy I’ve been able to find someone I can share every moment with and who stands by me through any difficulties I face.

[Elaborate on specific future plans together such as starting a business, traveling, making big purchases such as houses or cars, etc.].

I declare that what I have stated above is true, honest, and genuine. As an applicant, I don’t have any intention to be married to [insert partner name] just for the purpose of getting permanent residency. I love him for so many good reasons, and I am so grateful that I found my soul mate, the love of my life. We have committed to staying and living together and we will try to overcome all the obstacles in our relationship.

Since meeting [insert partner name], my life has become so wonderful and so blissful. In each person’s life, there is turbulence and there will always be challenges but having someone so wonderful to stand by me is a blessing and such a gift.

The Honorable Consul

Dear Sir/Madam:

I would like to apply for an Australian Tourist Visa for myself, RICARDO DALISAY, and for my mother, GLORIA DALISAY, to cover our intention to travel to your state from April 1 to 6, 2020.

We will be visiting Melbourne. The main purpose of our travel is tourism. Over the past five years, I have been to Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong. I returned to the Philippines after every trip, and I have NEVER overstayed a visa ever.

I travel with my mother every year to have quality time with her. This year, I am hoping I could bring her to Melbourne so she could enjoy the many attractions including the Great Ocean Road, Brighton Beach, and Port Campbell.

My ITR (tax document) for this year has not been released by my employer, so I am submitting a copy of my last year’s ITR, a Certificate of Employment, and copies of my pay slips this year. I am also uploading statements for my two bank accounts: a payroll account, where I receive my salary; and a savings account, where I keep my life savings.

We trust that you will find everything in order and remain at your disposal for any further information you may need. Thank you so much. Hoping for a favorable response.

Sincerely,

Ricardo Dalisay
