It is often suggested that everyone must carry out voluntary work for their own society and contribute to development of the community. I definitely support this view as it can be beneficial for both volunteers and the society.

Firstly, offering services free of charge to the local people may bring several advantages to volunteers, especially for those who have just set up their professions. That is to say, by doing unpaid work, they can gain valuable experience and gradually become master at their sphere. Working with people from all walks of life makes them more sophisticated and flexible in their work. Moreover, doing voluntary work in the community may provide them with a chance to make their name well-known and get new acquaintances, which would make their future businesses easier to set up.

Secondly, volunteering plays a pivotal role in developing the society. People who are financially-disadvantaged in the community, can greatly benefit from utilizing such free services. Free check-ups in the health clinics can be a good example for this. Also, streets, parks, and play grounds may be frequently upgraded and cleaned with a help of volunteers. Lastly, the gap between the rich and the poor may not be a problem anymore. For instance, donations and financial-aids given by volunteers will be directed to those who really need it.

To sum up, volunteering has always been regarded as a positive trait and encouraged every individual to be a part of this. Personally, I feel there is no any harm or negative consequences of carry out voluntary tasks for the society.

When I was a college student I had plenty of opportunities to volunteer in different organizations and I can say that my experiences were unforgettable and life-changing that I’ll forever hold dear. Well, let me tell you my favorite volunteering experience at a Children’s Cancer Foundation center in our city, where I usually spent most of my summer holidays.

LEXICAL RESOURCE

i.) FIRST PARAGRAPH: The speaker developed his introduction by stating that he had many experiences in volunteering and each experience he had was valuable to him. Then after that line, he gave the main topic of his story. With that kind of intro, he’s able to use good language and it’s creative.

ii.) SECOND PARAGRAPH: In this part, he introduced the foundation by talking about what it does, how it started, and who are the beneficiaries. That’s important as it acts as a background story. In that way, the examiner would get a better understanding of the foundation and he would then get an idea of what kind of volunteering the speaker did.

Anyway, my first volunteering experience at that foundation was three years ago when my best friend who was a nursing student then, invited me to join their volunteer activity. He said that their professor wanted to take them to the said foundation. As I was eager to know about children with cancer, I never hesitated to join.

On the day of our visit, we held some activities, of course, intended for children. I was assigned to entertainment as I didn’t have any background in nursing or medical-related stuff. I did story-telling, painting, and singing with kids. It was a lovely experience seeing kids be wreathed in smiles. Witnessing their condition for the very first time and hearing their stories made me realize then, how brave they were. I felt embarrassed of myself for having so much fear in life even on petty things.

Those kids taught me to be fearless in anything that I do. If they themselves are brave enough to face their condition, there’s no reason why I can’t be as brave as they are in this life.

iii.) THIRD PARAGRAPH: In this part, the speaker started recalling the time how he got to join a particular volunteering activity. This would serve as a preparatory idea or detail for the major details that would come next to his story.

iv.) FOURTH PARAGRAPH: Here, he described thoroughly what he did as a volunteer. He stated very important details of his story. This is the most important part of his monologue answering the task about volunteering.

v.) FIFTH PARAGRAPH: He simply shared his life lesson from what he experienced and this would give a great value to his entire story. That’s a very good way to end his monologue.

What qualities or personalities are required for a volunteer?

I believe compassion, selflessness, kindness, and dedication are the most important qualities a volunteer should have. These characteristics are needed in order to achieve the goal of volunteering, which is to contribute something valuable to society – may it be helping the less privileged people, conserving the environment, taking care of the elderly, and the like.

As we know, volunteers do not get any monetary rewards for the work that they do, so in the first place, they should possess those commendable traits, otherwise, the common goal will not be realized. So, if one embodies those qualities and is willing to allocate time to take part in volunteering, then this world will become a better place to live in.

Compassion [noun] – sympathetic concern for the struggles or sufferings of others

Selflessness [noun] – concern more with the needs of others than with one’s own

Dedication [noun] – commitment

Less-privileged [adj.] – having less money, education, than the other people

i.) The speaker gave a straightforward answer enumerating the different qualities of a volunteer. Then he explained the importance of those characteristics to achieve the main goal of volunteering. Not only that, he mentioned some examples of what kinds of volunteering activities could add value to society. Finally, he ended his answer by stating that with those kinds of people and the act of kindness they share with others, the world became a better place to live in. It’s a very well-constructed answer with an enlightening conclusive statement.

Do you think people should participate more in volunteering?

Well honestly, the question sounds like everyone is obliged to volunteer but that is not the principle of volunteering. We cannot ask or order people to volunteer because volunteering in the first place is not asked, it is offered personally without conditions. In my opinion, the thought of the question conflicts with the concept of volunteering. I think it would be better to ask, “How can we encourage people to participate in volunteering?”.

To volunteer is to offer part of yourself willingly to the community and every one of us should not be obligated to do volunteering. Let me just reiterate, it is not asked but it is offered.

Reiterate [verb] – to say something again

i.) The speaker commented on the question itself as he felt and believed that the idea of the question presented as if everyone must volunteer. He expressed his point of view about volunteering and explained that volunteering in the first place is not something people can ask for but it’s something people could offer. Because of that belief, he suggested a different way to ask a question which is focusing on how people can encourage others to participate in volunteering. He sounded very confident in the fact that he showed disagreement with the question.

ii.) Then simply ended his answer by reiterating his understanding of what volunteering meant for him. It’s a great answer as he’s able to make a good impression on the examiner.

In what way do companies engaging in volunteering help society?

That hugely depends on what volunteer activity they are taking part in. If a certain company is conducting a coastal clean-up, then for sure they help save the ocean’s health from the brink of destruction. If companies are doing humanitarian aid like educating children, providing basic necessities, or medical care to underprivileged communities, then they make people’s lives better. Through their assistance, they are able to uplift the morale of those less fortunate people.

Although each company has a different charitable organization that they are engaging in, they all share the same goal which is to make a better society and I should say that their efforts for participating in volunteering are deeply appreciated.

The way the speaker developed his conclusion makes his answer logical or organized.

How do advanced technologies help volunteers and volunteering experiences?

Excuse my ignorance, I do not have any idea at all. Well, I joined several volunteer activities in the past but unfortunately, we did not use any forms of modern technology. We only relied on ourselves in conducting feeding programs and teaching children important things like the importance of personal hygiene. We did not use any advanced technologies to make our activity successful.

Anyway, if modern technologies are now incorporated with volunteering, then that will surely be helpful to volunteers and the beneficiaries since basically, technology provides nothing but convenience or comfort to humankind. I applaud those volunteers who take the initiative to use modern technologies to make their volunteering work more fun and productive.

However, in order for him to extend his answer and to prove his language prowess to the examiner, he gave comments on the idea of incorporating modern technologies in volunteering. Although he didn’t know the answer to the question, he was still able to express his answer better. So don’t be afraid to say that you don’t know the answer but make sure to express why you don’t know. It’s a great answer!

Describe a volunteering experience you have had

Short Version:

Volunteer work is something which we do out of our own choice. We often do it free or with less salary. In Volunteer work, we do welfare activities and contribute to humanity.I have done volunteer work many times

Last year, I participated in an important Volunteer work. Actually, our community decided to convert a garbage dumping zone into a park for Children and families. This dumping zone had been spreading bad odour in residential areas and there was fear of growing mosquitoes and infections. Our Sarpanch called the local people to come forward and extend helping hands in this project. People responded to this call and welcomed the idea of fulfilling this project with help from Volunteers.

One or two persons from every home joined group of Volunteers. Then there was a group of more than 100 people. I also had a strong urge to contribute to this common project of my own community. So from my house, I joined them. Infact, my parents encouraged me for Volunteering myself in this service.

Then I along with other volunteers cleared the garbage from that place and transported it to other distant location. Then the ground was leveled with layers of new soil. Luckily, some rich people had donated cement, bricks, which were used to build boundary of park with the help of Volunteer masons. Then people brought full grown trees and saplings and planted them inside the park in beautifully designed lanes. I myself planted 10 “Neem” trees in the park.

Local Sarpanch donated swings for children. It took around 20 days to do this project. After 20 days, the site was totally transformed and became a centre point of attraction for everyone. Everyone was happy by contributing to this project. This Volunteer work raised feeling of care and brotherhood among the people. I enjoyed this Volunteer work with my friends. I felt a great sense of satisfaction and peace at my heart. There was something in our Village which actually united all the people and that was this selfless service to a common cause.

So this was the time when have had a good experience of Volunteering.

I always want to do some work through which I can help poor and needy people. I got a chance to volunteering work in march 2020. Corona pandemic started in India, and for the protection of the public, our prime minister ordered a complete lockdown for a few months in the whole India. We all know everything has two sides I mean to say positive side is that people stay safe in their houses and also get chance to spend time with their family which they do not spend due to their busy schedule. But lockdown proves very bad for labour class people because many people lose their job and they did not have enough money to provide food and shelter to their family.

My street people decided to help poor people so for that they announce that they needed volunteers who help them to provide medical facility to poor people and motivate them to support the government and go to the hospital for test if suffering from fever, cold, cough and some other symptoms of coronavirus, so they get proper treatment on time. We all collected some money to purchase mask, sanitizer and hand gloves for people and distribute in them.

I realized that doing work for others gives much mental peace which I did not get when I worked for my self. My way of thinking and perspective about life has changed a lot.

I did this work for two months, but It does riot mean I stop helping people even now I use my pocket money to buy some medical accessories which I distributed in poor people and admit them in the hospital if they need any treatment.

I have not had many volunteering experiences in my life • But recently I got an opportunity to volunteer and I really liked it • In March 2020 when the Corona pandemic started in India our prime minister ordered a complete lockdown in the whole of India. • Many labour class people were jobless all of a sudden. • These people depend on their daily earning for their living and in one blow their source of earning was gone. • There is an NGO in my hometown which advertised through the local Cable TV that they needed volunteers to provide food and other things of need to these workers • My friend and I decided to volunteer for this noble cause • We called the NGO and asked them where we had to come and what we had to do? • They told us that either we could help with the cooking or we could help with the delivery of food packets • We volunteered for cooking, as my parents were a bit sceptical about us going out for delivering food packets • We went for a whole month and cooked food for these labourers from morning till evening • Of course we all took proper precautions and we were always masked. • It was very tiring but it gave us great happiness • I noticed that many people were donating things for these poor people • Every day I saw hundreds of packets of grocery and cooking oil there to give to the poor people who had suddenly lost their livelihood. • For the first time I realised that doing for others gives a lot of mental peace. • I also realised that we keep cribbing for our problems, which are actually very small if we compare them to what so many around us are suffering from. • I’ve started developing empathy for others • I feel very happy about it and it has changed my perspective about life a lot • I have learnt to value what I have and not crib for what I do not have. • I remember that whole week when I used to come home my mother made me go straight to the bathroom and take a bath before letting me in any other room • She also used to wash my clothes and mask immediately • In a way my family also supported me for doing this volunteer work • So this was the volunteering experience that I had recently

Yes I think people should volunteer more nowadays. As it is, people are leading self-centred lives.So, by volunteering they will be in touch with the community and it will give them a purpose in life.

Modern technologies assist volunteers and volunteering experiences in a big way.First of all, through these technologies young people come to know where they can go out for volunteering.Secondly, they can read about the volunteering activities done by their favourite celebrities and be motivated. Social networking sites can also help to get them recognition for their volunteer work.

IELTS Speaking Part 1 Topic Volunteer Questions and Answers

1. Why do you think people volunteer?

The motive behind volunteering is different for every individual. Typically, when a person signs up for voluntary work, it is to help the poor. Such endeavours are also undertaken by people who have a lot of spare time and want to do something productive and impactful. There are also instances where volunteering is only an addition to a person’s resume. This is more common among college students who lack work experience.

I believe each person has his or her own motives when signing up for voluntary work. Some want to offer their help to people that are less fortunate in life, while others just look for memorable experiences. Oddly enough, some individuals volunteer to earn certificates as a way of polishing their CVs, so they would have a better chance of being accepted when applying for jobs or scholarships.

2. Would you like to work as a volunteer?

Yes, I would like to work as a volunteer sometime in the future. I believe that such humanitarian activities are only possible when a person does not have an immediate need or goal to achieve. Since I am in my early twenties, there are various aspects of my life that need more attention. Thus, at this stage of my life, volunteering is not feasible.

Currently, I don’t. I’m too busy finding out a way to balance my life and my work, so if there is an occasion when I have time for myself, I’d rather use that time on entertainment activities rather than some other kind of work.

3. Have you ever done any voluntary work?

Yes, I have participated in voluntary work during the first semester of my college. I was part of the Green Club which often organized welfare activities and events. Owing to the after-effects of a super cyclone, we were given the responsibility to provide food and clothing to the affected. It was a team effort, and I had a wonderful experience during this activity.

No, I haven’t. As I said earlier, all those work-life things pretty much occupy my mind, so I have never considered volunteering as a way of spending my days in the past.

4. Is volunteering worth the time it takes?

In my opinion, volunteering is only suitable for individuals who do not have any urgency in their lives. Worrying about the welfare of others is a selfless activity. If a person’s mind is preoccupied with something else, such endeavours are difficult to carry out. As the saying goes, ‘charity begins at home’, a person should only take on the responsibility of volunteering if their time is not accounted for and they are free from any kind of stress.

I think it depends on your schedule. If you have a lot of spare time, then signing up for voluntary work is a good idea since you can easily broaden your social circle and have a great time helping out other people. On the other hand, if your work costs a lot of time and is causing you troubles, then you’d better focus on that aspect before thinking about volunteering.

5. What could you do to help if you had no money?

There are several ways to be charitable that do not involve the exchange of money. Moreover, it is always more prudent to provide the destitute with essentials like food and clothing. Also, appealing to the local authorities and the government to take measures for providing the homeless with decent shelter, especially during natural calamities, is an endeavour that requires more effort and persistence from the entire community than monetary aid.

There’s plenty of things you could do. For example, donating clothing or serving free food in a soup kitchen are great ways to help out people in need. Or else, you can sign up for a volunteering program in need of manpower. iELTS XPRESS

6. What situations need voluntary workers?

Well, in my country, when a charity organization needs manpower to distribute supplies of food and clothes to people in disaster areas, they would recruit volunteers. Or else, places like a soup kitchen where poor people come to get free food always need voluntary workers to keep things in order.

7. Can you think of different types of voluntary work?

No, sorry. Nothing comes to mind right now. I guess that’s because I lack real-life experience in doing voluntary work so I don’t have an in-depth understanding about this aspect.

8. Would you volunteer to help people outside your community?

I think I would. Some of my friends, who do voluntary work regularly, told me that they always had an immense feeling of satisfaction after contributing to something that a lot of people can benefit from. So, if people need help, no matter where they are, I would like to lend them a hand.

9. Have you read a book about voluntary work?

No, I haven’t. In all honesty, I don’t even know that kind of book actually exists until you asked me. I suppose they are about fascinating experiences that the authors had when they did voluntary work, which sounds pretty intriguing to me. So, I think I might try check one out after I leave this room.

10. What types of voluntary work would be unpleasant for you?

I think I don’t like doing anything I have not been fully trained to do. There were a few times in the past when I was thrown into group activities with no preparation, and then the leaders didn’t show up and suddenly I was in charge, with no real training or help. Those situations brought me terrible feelings.

Talk about a time you did volunteer work. You should say: When was it? What did you do? Why did you decide to give your time for free? How did you feel about it and would you do it again? You will have one to two minutes to talk about this topic. You will have one minute to prepare what you are going to say.

STEP 1 – Read the card carefully, paying special attention to the topic statement. Within this step identify the category that you will discuss and the tense.

TOPIC – Volunteering my time (Event – Time, Attendees, Reason, Activities, Outcome, (Your) Experience)

In the past – using past, present perfect, and past perfect

Why use the past perfect?

To talk about multiple actions that happened in the past and making clear which activity preceded the other. I volunteered to do a community clean up in my neighborhood as I had been astonished by the amount of garbage in the parks and on the roads in my local area.

STEP 2 – Think of two to three good ideas and visualize them, choose the one that is original and easy to discuss. Think of the three most common ways that people volunteer

STEP 4 – Have your first sentence ready! Not just to sound fluent and maximize your response time BUT also, to align yourself specifically with the question and to give yourself a rolling start. (like in the Indi 500 vs Formula 1 racing)

Last February, I volunteered to distribute food to the needy in my local area with one hundred other volunteers as I had been moved by an advertisement I saw on T.V. about the increase in the number of homeless due to the COVID pandemic and its effects on employment. About a thousand people lost their jobs as a result of the lockdown and they were in need of sustenance, specifically, drinkable water, energy-rich food, and clothing. The other workers and I met at our local community hall at 8 in the morning and prepared over 500 care packages within the first two hours which included, a boiled egg, a chicken sandwich, an apple, and a bottle of water as well as some undergarments and clean t-shirts. We each went on a designated route around the city and gave the package to those in need. This went on for about two weeks and by the end of February and we had helped more than 10 thousand people. Each workday ended around three o’clock in the afternoon. (Check notes and questions).

1. Have you ever done any voluntary work?

Yeah, I’ve done some voluntary work here and there. I remember I used to help out at a local food bank and pitch in at a community clean-up event. Those were really rewarding experiences. You know, it feels good to know you’re making a positive impact, even if it’s just a small one.

2. Would you volunteer to help people outside your community?

Definitely! If there’s a chance to lend a hand to people beyond my local community, I’d be up for it. It’s a way to make a global impact and learn about different cultures in the process.

The speaking test is the second element of the IELTS assessments that will test you for your language proficiency and speech skills. Those are conducted face-to-face via video conference arrangements with a specially trained expert in speech and linguistics to rate you. Volunteering gives you the chance to pursue a new job without having a long-term commitment. In a new sector, it’s a great way to learn various experiences. You can volunteer directly with an agency that does the kind of work you are involved in certain areas.

What was the Volunteering Situation? Where Was It?

I really wanted to do some work that helps me to help the poor and vulnerable. In March 2020, I was offered a chance to volunteer. The Corona pandemic began in India, and our Prime Minister ordered a full lockdown for a few months in India to protect the public.

I mean to say the good side is that people remain healthy in their homes and still get the chance to spend time with their families, which they don’t spend because of their busy schedule. We all know everything has two sides. Yet lockdown proves really bad for people in the labour class because many people are losing their jobs and have not had enough resources to provide their families with food and shelter.

Why did you Volunteer?

My street people wanted to help poor people, so they declared that they needed volunteers to help them support vulnerable people with medical facilities and encourage them to agree with the government and go to the hospital for testing if they suffer from temperature, fever, coughing and just about any other coronavirus symptoms, so they get proper care on time. We all raised some cash for the purchase of masks and for sanitization.

How did You Feel about That?

I found that it offers a lot of mental peace to do work for others that I did not get while I worked for myself. There has been a lot of change in my way of thinking and outlook on life.

I worked for the government for two months, but to this day I use my allowance money to buy some healthcare equipment that I distribute to impoverished people and bring them to the hospitals if they need certain care. It really doesn’t mean I quit helping people.

Museums have been centers of education and research for long. Through the activities of acquiring, conserving, researching and exhibiting a myriad of tangible items like artefacts and specimens, we can confirm that museums are of great educational value. Of late, this notion has been challenged by some people, who think that museums are operated for recreation as well. From my point of view, a museum can serve multi-purposes, although education seems to account for a substantial part.

No one can deny that museums impart knowledge to visitors through various methods. One of them is collecting and displaying objects of historical, scientific or artistic value from a particular site. People working for museums are usually trained to interpret those collected specimens to the general public. Viewing these items allow visitors to acquire knowledge of a specific subject, such as art, history, technology and environment. Another approach that can be taken by a museum is to invite specialists to lecture regularly about various fields, which is instructive as well. An entertainment business, by comparison, hardly serves such educational purposes.

In addition to the way it operates, a museum is distinguished from any other operator in the entertainment industry in various aspects. First and foremost, museums are usually not-for-profit. An admission fee is charged only in some selected museums. It barely targets any specific visitors like an entertainment business usually does. Instead, it is supposed to be open to the general public. Besides, the criteria for selecting displayed items is not based on their commercial values but is per the line of items they mainly concentrate. For instance, a history museum would focus only on those items that are of historical importance, although those items might not have significant market value.

However, to some extent, the remarkable development of museums lately can be attributed to some entertainment purposes to recoup their budget. But at the end, the objective of providing knowledge is far bigger than the entertainment.

As outlined above, there are many benchmarks against which a museum can be distinguished from a recreation provider. They are more of educational value than just being places of amusements.

Museums are an important part of the culture of a community or the location where it is situated. They are also consequential in keeping the memory of our predecessors and their achievements alive in the minds of the present generation. Although many surmise that the primary purpose of museums is to educate, others believe that they are also facilitators of recreation. In my opinion, the intent of visiting a museum has shifted from gathering knowledge to leisure over the past few years. In the following paragraphs, I will elaborate on the topic in detail and justify my views.

It is a well-known fact that museums serve as a centre for rare artefacts and antiques from different eras. Information regarding every aspect of a subject, especially historically significant ones can be found at these exhibitions. Thus, these places are considered ideal for research purposes for several students and scholars. That being said, with the advent of the internet, nearly all kinds of relevant information on a subject matter can be found online, including data that is unavailable even in many major museums. Thereby, touring a museum for educational exploration is slowly going out of fashion.

Moreover, with time, museums themselves have also evolved and adapted to the changing preferences of the people. These days the quality of services like a cafeteria, gift and souvenir shops and the general ambience of a museum is as significant as the exhibits themselves if not more. Presently, the popularity of a museum is not solely dependent on the uniqueness and rarity of the relics showcased; rather, the appearances and the presentation are also influential factors in attracting visitors.

That being said, learning about historical facts, traditions and conventions is still a prime reason for visiting a museum. There are still a considerable amount of people who are driven towards these places more out of curiosity than anything else. However, societal trends are changing with time and museums are gradually shifting from a scholastic to a recreational system of operations.

Finally, I would like to conclude by saying that the nature of the audience is diverse and there can be several reasons for going to a museum. Nevertheless, it is evident that recently the number of people visiting museums for amusement has increased to a great extent.

Junior Volunteers

Additional Guidelines for Younger Volunteers

You must be at least 12 years old to be a junior volunteer. During their first volunteering shift, junior volunteers must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to go over rules, sign the application, and ensure their child understands the process.

After the initial supervised shift, junior volunteers can volunteer alone for up to one hour per day. Junior volunteers are not allowed in the dog kennels without their parent or guardian.

There is a 3-strikes rule! If we have to remind you about following these rules three times, you will not be allowed to return to volunteer without a parent.

HSoP cannot accommodate volunteers under the age of 12 at this time.

***Junior Volunteers can socialize with animals that are already accustomed to younger people. If an animal is not comfortable or socialized with children, you will not be allowed to interact with them.***

Dog Walking

Our dogs love getting to go on walks! These mini adventures offer a fun break from the shelter environment, and give our pups a chance to practice their leash skills before going home. If you'd like to help our pups get some relaxing walks in, we would love to have your help!

If you haven't already, be sure to fill out and submit a volunteer application.

Next, fill out and submit the dog walking form above. Be sure to carefully read all guidelines.

Just like that, you're all set to walk some dogs! We will ask to hold onto your ID while you're out.

***Junior volunteers cannot walk dogs by themselves. If they are accompanied by an adult parent or guardian, then the junior volunteer can accompany the adult for the walk, but may not control the leash.***

Group Volunteering

Thank you for considering HSoP as the beneficiary of your groups’ philanthropy! Due to space restrictions at HSoP, we are unable to accommodate large groups of volunteers on site. However, groups can do a lot for the animals currently at HSoP by organizing fundraisers, pet food drives, or pet supply collections for the homeless animals of Latah County.

While we aren’t able to accommodate groups at our shelter, your group efforts can still make a huge difference to the homeless animals found within your community.

After your group has organized a fundraiser, supported a pet food drive for our Pet Food Pantry, or done a supply collection, a tour is a wonderful way to top off the experience! This is a great way for your group to see exactly how your efforts have benefited your pet community.

Our cats and kittens love to lie on handmade blankets. You can knit, crochet, or tie blanks out of fleece. The recommended measurement is about 18-20” x 18-20” when you’re finished.

Court-Mandated Community Service

Thank you for your interest in serving your mandated community service hours at the Humane Society of the Palouse. Individuals seeking to fulfill community service requirements do not participate in the volunteer program: they complete projects and tasks that do not involve any contact with the animals or the clients at the shelter.

Community Service Volunteers must read the guidelines, complete information profile, and sign the code of conduct/waiver in order to get started. Please note that the Humane Society of the Palouse reserves the right to refuse a Community Service Volunteer for any reason.

Community Service Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.

Volunteers must schedule in advance

Time slots available are from 9:30 am – 12:00 pm, Monday – Saturday

To sign up, please contact HSoP by phone at (208) 883-1166

HSoP reserves the right to turn away any Community Service Volunteers who do not show up on time, and to ask Community Service Volunteers to leave early if there is not enough work available.

Shifts are filled on a first come, first serve basis and HSoP can only accommodate 1 volunteer per day.

Duties may include laundry, dishes, sorting donations, cleaning, and more.

Dress Protocol

To prevent slipping, exposure to harsh cleaning chemicals, and injuries, all Community Service Volunteers must wear flat, enclosed rubber-sole shoes at all times.

All Community Service Volunteers must not wear thong sandals, flip flops, or any shoe with an open toe, torn clothing, cut-off shorts, T-shirts with controversial or offensive messages, halter tops, backless shirts, half-shirts, muscle shirts, tank tops, dangling earrings, or other jewelry that may interfere with volunteer duties.

Does HSoP euthanize animals? The Humane Society of the Palouse is a low/no-kill shelter. HSoP will not euthanize adoptable animals due to space. We’ve stayed true to our mission for 45 years and are committed to preserving and nurturing the lives of all the rescued animals in our care. We reserve humane euthanasia only in instances when animals are suffering greatly with no potential for relief, or if an animal is so aggressive that he or she presents a danger to people or other animals and cannot be safely handled or placed. The decision to euthanize is never made lightly and done only with the best interest of the animal in mind. HSoP is committed to providing all of the animals we rescue with the individualized and compassionate care they need and deserve until they are adopted by responsible, loving people.
How many canines does HSoP help per year? Each year HSoP provides temporary housing for anywhere from 200-300 dogs.
How many dogs are returned to their owner, and how many are adopted out per year? For stray dogs that are found within Moscow city limits, HSoP on average will be able to reunite 60% with their owners and 40% will remain in shelter care until adopted. Whereas stray dogs that are found outside of Moscow city limits, HSoP on average will be able to reunite 40% with their owners and 60% will remain in shelter care until adopted. We strongly encourage all pet owners to equip their pets with accurate ID to increase the likelihood of them coming home if they ever get lost. We encourage microchip ID for all pets, and strongly recommend a collar with an ID tag containing the owner's contact number.
How many felines does HSoP help per year? Each year HSoP provides temporary housing for anywhere from 200-300 cats. HSoP generally has more cats than dogs
How many cats are returned to their owner, and how many are adopted out per year? For stray cats that are found within Moscow city limits, HSoP on average will be able to reunite 10% with their owners and 90% will remain in shelter care until adopted. Whereas stray cats that are found outside of Moscow city limits, HSoP on average will be able to reunite 1% with their owners and 99% will remain in shelter care until adopted. We strongly encourage all pet owners to equip their pets with accurate ID to increase the likelihood of them coming home if they ever get lost. We encourage microchip ID for all pets, and strongly recommend a collar with an ID tag containing the owner's contact number. Cats should wear breakaway collars if possible.

How much funding needs to be donated or raised by HSoP to make up the 35% and 8% of the annual budget? Each year, HSoP has to raise over $80,000 through donations and fundraising just to keep our doors open. This is why any size donation is greatly appreciated. Without the generous and continued support of our pet community, HSoP would not be able to do what we do. Donate today!
Is the Humane Society of the Palouse part of the Humane Society of the United States? No. HSoP has no affiliation with HSUS or the ASPCA. Though we do look to the national animal welfare organizations to stay current with best practices, we do not receive funding nor are we affiliated with them. HSoP does apply for grants through these large national organizations, however HSoP does not receive annual funding from the HSUS or ASPCA.
Who is involved with HSoP? City of Moscow, Chief of Police City of Moscow owns the building and pays for utilities and make up 22% of HSoP yearly budget. Latah county provides 10% of HSoPs’ yearly budget. HSoP presents to the County Commissioners every year to request funding. HSoP Voluntary Board of Directors 14 members who bring a variety of expertise to the organization. HSoP has a full time staff of 5 that include: Shelter Director Animal Care Attendants Public Relations Manager Countless Volunteers
Does the Humane Society of the Palouse pick up stray animals? The Humane Society does not pick up animals. Stray dogs found within Moscow city limits can be reported to the Animal Control Officer by calling (208)882-2677. If a stray dog is found in Latah County, citizens can call the Latah County Sheriff’s office at (208)882-2216 for assistance, but do so knowing there is no animal control for Latah County. There is no animal control for stray cats.

If my pet is missing, could it be at the animal shelter? Hundreds of companion animals come into the shelter every year from Latah County. If your pet is missing, it is important that you contact the shelter as soon as possible so that a missing pet report can be completed and shelter staff can be notified to look for your pet. It is also important that you visit the shelter in-person and look for your pet on a regular basis. Please remember that it is the responsibility of the pet owner to search for their missing pet; however, HSoP will do everything possible to assist you in doing so. We also encourage posting a photo, description and information about where your pet went missing from as well as when to local lost and found groups on Facebook.
What happens if my pet is brought to the shelter? If your pet is not readily identifiable by tag or microchip, your pet will be held for a stray holding period. Dogs found in the City of Moscow have a 10-day holding period. Dogs found outside of Moscow but within Latah County have a 6-day holding period. Cats found anywhere within Moscow or Latah County have a 6-day holding period. The Shelter will make every effort to contact you regarding your pet during this time. Reclaim fees apply in each situation and must be paid prior to reclaiming your pet. Unclaimed pets become the property of HSoP following the end of a stray holding period. Once this happens, they start the process of becoming ready for adoption. Please ensure that all of your pets have accurate ID to increase the chance of being reunited with them if they ever get lost.
What does it cost to reclaim my pet from the shelter? Pet owners are charged an impound fee of $20.00. To reclaim a dog that lives within Moscow city limits, if the dog is not already licensed with the city, the purchase of a lifetime license is mandatory. The license is $25.00 for altered dogs and $35.00 for intact dogs. Boarding fees of $10.00 per day are charged for each day of impound after the initial twenty-four hours of arrival at the Shelter
Do I have to have my pet spayed or neutered? Spaying or neutering is not required for reclaimed pets, although we encourage responsible sterilization of pets and offer assistance through S.N.A.P. Spaying or neutering your pets can prevent unwanted litters and even prevent some cancers in your beloved cat or dog. There are already so many homeless cats and dogs at the shelter, we don't need anymore! If you are in need of assistance having your pet spayed or neutered, please apply for our Spay/Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP).
If I witness what I believe to be an act of animal cruelty, who do I call? Humane Society of the Palouse encourages the public to IMMEDIATELY report acts of animal cruelty or neglect to Animal Control by calling (208) 882-2677 if occurring within Moscow city limits, and (208) 882-2216 if occurring in Latah County. HSoP does not have the ability to report cruelty or neglect secondhand. If we are contacted about situations of this kind, we will direct them to contact local law enforcement.
Does HSoP offer veterinary services to the pulbic? Though we would love to offer spaying/neutering and vaccination services to our local pet community, HSoP does not have the ability or facilities to do so at this time. HSoP does offer assistance through our Spay/Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP), and microchipping services. Does it cost money to surrender an owned animal? Yes. HSoP does ask for a small donation to help provide care for owned pets that have been surrendered. Please visit our Owner Surrender page to learn more.
How old do I have to be to visit the shelter? Anyone is welcome to visit the shelter during our open hours! We do have some restrictions about who can see and interact with shelter pets: - You must be at least 18 years old to enter our dog kennels or to interact with our adoptable dogs without a parent or guardian present. - You must be at least 18 years old to interact with our adoptable cats without a parent or guardian present (unless you're working a junior volunteer shift). - Those 17 and under are welcome to visit the shelter and interact will all of our adoptable pets, so long as they're accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 18.
I'm going on vacation, can you board my pet? No. At this time HSoP does not offer boarding services for pets. There are several boarding facilities throughout Latah County and most vet clinics will also board. I found a wild animal hurt in my yard, what should I do? HSoP is not equipped care for wildlife. If you've found an injured or orphaned wild bird or animal, please call Palouse Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation at (208) 614-2273. I found a feral cat, what do I do? HSoP does not have the ability to provide care for feral cats within our facility. We do have a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program for feral cats living on owned property in Latah County. The program intends to reduce feline infectious diseases and homeless cat births in our region, by providing feral cats with vaccines, spay/neuter surgeries, and ear-tips for identification.
Why can’t I bring my animal to the Humane Society of the Palouse if I live outside of Latah County? HSoP does not euthanize to make space. We do not have the capacity, space, or manpower to receive animals from outside of the agreed jurisdiction we have with the City of Moscow and Latah County. We recommend contacting the shelter that services your county and they may be able to help.

The twenty-first century is the era when populations of cities will exceed rural communities for the first time in human history. The population growth of cities in many countries, including those in transition from planned to market economies, is putting considerable strain on ecological and natural resources. This paper examines four central issues: (a) the challenges and opportunities presented through working in jurisdictions where there are no official or established methods in place to guide regional, ecological and landscape planning and design; (b) the experience of the author’s practice—Gillespies LLP—in addressing these challenges using techniques and methods inspired by McHarg in Design with Nature in the Russian Federation in the first decade of the twenty-first century; (c) the augmentation of methods derived from Design with Nature in reference to innovations in technology since its publication and the contribution that the art of landscape painters can make to landscape analysis and interpretation; and (d) the application of this experience to the international competition and colloquium for the expansion of Moscow. The text concludes with a comment on how the application of this learning and methodological development to landscape and ecological planning and design was judged to be a central tenant of the winning design. Finally, a concluding section reflects on lessons learned and conclusions drawn.
