New York City’s Top-Rated Professional Resume & LinkedIn Profile Writers

New York City Manhattan 1200x200

As New York’s top-rated executive resume and profile writing service, we know job recruiters use LinkedIn as their principal tool to post vacancies and search for business professionals in the New York City metropolitan area. Even executive recruiters filling C-level positions use professional digital networking to find and engage with passive candidates. The LinkedIn digital network is the preferred source of premium jobs, publishing ~100,000 job vacancies in the New York City area. The career networking website can see how you are connected to the hiring manager and department executive at your target organization. Then you can connect with and message them, all within the platform. This plan requires a hard-skill optimized profile and professional resume that improves your visibility in LinkedIn and Google search algorithms.

NYC LinkedIn Profile Writing Example

ATS Friendly Resume Format Explained

Applicant tracking system (ATS) is software job recruiters use to automatically import, scan, filter, and rank resumes submitted when candidates upload them to job postings. ATS cannot read and process documents with fancy formats. A resume with tables, charts, images, two columns, boxes, headers, and footers, will likely be rejected by the ATS before a human sees it. Professional resumes use a simple, text-only format. LinkedIn is the place to add images, videos, articles, and other creative examples of your work.

Good Vs Bad ATS Resume Examples

Resume layout job recruiters expect to see:

Format: use reverse-chronological work experience resume format. List your most recent job at the top.

Fonts: use narrow width fonts like Calibri or another sans-serf font like Arial

Heading font-size: 11 or 12-point size

Body text font-size: 10.5 is the standard resume font size, but 10 or 11 are acceptable.

Line spacing: prefer .5 between experiences, but 0 is acceptable.

Resume margins: .5 or .75 inches all around.

Dates: include year and month 01/202-07/2023.

File type: submitting a resume in Microsoft Word is acceptable. A PDF is not required.

Resume critical parts and sections:

Header: Your contact information.

Headline: One line that summarizes your skills and presumed new job goals

Biography: 5-8 sentence summary of your abilities and accomplishments.

Skills: add your skills that match the jobs you seek in common industry terminology.

Work Experience: your job scope and quantifiable achievements.

Education: degrees, certifications, and certificates.

Professional Resume Writing Services that Gets You the Interview!

I am an executive resume writer, proud to have been named among the best resume writers NYC, as well as one of the top 15 LinkedIn experts , whose background as a global Human Resources executive means I know how optimal resume writing impacts the way your candidacy will be viewed by recruiters and hiring managers.  Unlike other executive resume writers, my insights into recruitment improve your chances for getting an interview by articulating your professional brand and the specific accomplishments that differentiate you from every other candidate.

You may be wondering about the difference between executive resume writers, professional resume writers, and “ordinary” resume writers. The term “professional resume writers” is kind of squishy – does it refer to resume writers for professional job seekers, or are the resume writers calling themselves professional? The term “executive resume writers” is clearer; it suggests that the resume writer only works with individuals whose job titles are manager or higher. Other resume writers work with clients in service industries which includes most non-exempt employees. Rising Star Resumes serves clients in the U.S., EMEA and APAC who seek professional resume writing services for executives.

There are many professional resume writers in NYC, and while many of them are good, you should steer clear of businesses calling themselves professional resume writing services that are really nothing more than call centers staffed by people with no experience in recruitment. Resume writing is an skill based on knowledge of corporate recruitment practices, marketing, and communications skills. Many professional resume writing services lack this multifaceted expertise. Read this to learn what to consider when selecting a resume writer.

The best professional resume writers understand that their role is to help you market yourself. Resume writing is marketing; it’s my job to turn your resume into a robust tool that markets you to your target employers. Resume writing is not  just a history of your employment. Resume writing should be targeted to the end user, namely the recruiter or hiring manager. Not all executive resume writers understand this. It boils down to this: the goal of a resume is to get you invited to an interview.

To learn more about effective resume writing, I encourage you to explore the articles on my blog that explain the many facets of resume writing and LinkedIn profile optimization. Just ask your question in the search bar for relevant blog posts.

When I was a recruiter, I posted jobs on LinkedIn, so I know how to write a LinkedIn profile that will improve your profile’s searchability. This means that when a recruiter or hiring manager is looking for a candidate with your background, your chances of  being found are optimized and your profile will appear higher when someone performs a candidate search.

I work with clients to enhance their resume writing in multiple fields that include data analytics, information technology, project management, digital marketing, sales, finance, HR and other professions.  I also specialize in resume writing for public sector clients who want to find employment in the private sector; this includes individuals from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as well as members of the NYPD’s executive team.

I’m also proud to be the only professional resume writer in NYC to be a featured contributor to NBCNews’ Know Your Value initiative.  Learn why recruiters probably won’t read your cover letter, as well as 5 ways to re-think your resume and learn why I don’t believe in customizing your resume for every application .

Check out the samples of my resume writing by clicking on any of the professions featured. Each resume you’ll find under the Samples tab earned the client multiple interviews within 3 months or less.

I’m often asked for advice on how to navigate what seem to be the many obstacles to career success. I don’t consider myself an expert on that topic, but I know who does – Jennifer Brick, whose book Career Glow-UP   is an excellent tool for helping you achieve your career goals.

WHY CHOOSE BEST RESUMES OF NEW YORK?

This is my business, so I like to get to know my clients – many of whom are still my clients after two decades and who gladly refer me to family, friends, and co-workers. I do not outsource my clients to subcontractors. I am not a high-volume resume writing service. There are many resume writing services out there that vary in business model and pricing. I cannot speak for everyone else, but if you are looking to work 1-on-1 with the person who is involved in the process with you from start to finish, that is the type of resume writing service that I run. I am the first point of contact and will always be a phone call or email away to provide post-completion support. In short, I am your career partner.

MY APPROACH

In addition to creating a tailored career profile that includes the right keywords, I like to create a backstory to frame your experience and your achievements. That is what we collaborate on: Your experience. Your backstory. Your achievements. I take care of the design, wording, and strategy. As any good team, we collaborate on the process from the get-go to the finish line.

Resume writing requires critical thinking and lots of creativity in terms of how the information should flow, what the messaging should be, and how the resume should be designed – from modest to modern. I take many things into consideration that influence the resume strategy, such as the business environments you’ve worked in and/or are targeting. For example, startup ventures, high-growth companies, and brick ‘n clicks.

Moreover, I shape your brand to put you in a certain light. For example, are you a turnaround strategist? Maybe you are an industry trailblazer who has taken risks to drive the success of new business ventures. These “X factors” will grab and hold a reader’s attention and encourage them to call you.

Let’s Chat –  Call me directly at (631) 224-9300 to discuss your background and my services. If I am on the phone or writing, leave a message; I will get back to you the same day. Please know that I generally work with mid to senior level professionals and that my standard turnaround time is 2 to 3 weeks. My fees for non-executives starts at $375. Executives and IT professionals / PMP resumes start at $675. Cover letters and LinkedIn profiles are prices separately.

I look forward to hearing from you!

FEATURED CLIENT TESTIMONIAL

I am an executive nurse and had been dabbling with my own resume for YEARS, meaning with each work experience I simply edited to reflect a piece of a job description. I met Ann after a nite of surfing the web. Ann sent me back 1 paragraph, which was a genius, poignant, politically correct response: “Jill, your talent is buried inside your 4-page document.” Needless to say, I sent my payment to Ann in full and our journey began.  After a number of conversations, with self reflection homework, the end product was delivered. No more buried talent. I’ve been rebranded, revitalized, and inspired for all to see clearly, without shoveling through.  Ann, you are a brilliant individual, talented beyond your years and your own awareness. The ultimate guide to writing a career change resume.

Changing careers doesn’t have to be difficult. It all starts with a resume crafted to highlight your ... [+] transferrable skills.

Your resume is one of the most critical tools during a career transition. Crafted thoughtfully, a career change resume can effectively highlight transferable skills and experiences from your old career to the new one, showcasing you as a prime candidate for your dream job .

Career change resumes offer a different narrative of a person’s experience versus someone looking to advance in their current industry. Transferrable skills are the most important to highlight.

What Success Looks Like In A Career Change

A successful career change doesn’t necessarily mean starting over. It can involve leveraging existing skills in a new context or applying knowledge from one industry to another. Success is about finding a role where you can make a meaningful contribution, and it often requires a blend of determination and strategic planning. The story you tell so far in your career that paints you as the right person for the job is vital to your resume being seen by the hiring manager.

Step-By-Step Guide To Writing Your Career Change Resume

It’s a fine line between highlighting what makes you unique and ensuring your document aligns with industry expectations. Here’s how to do it right.

Identify Your Transferrable Skills

Before opening a Word document or choosing a resume template, the first step is to take stock of your skills. Begin by closely examining your previous roles and jotting down the skills they entailed. Try categorizing them into hard skills—like technical skills and software proficiencies—and soft skills—such as communication and leadership abilities.

Sony Is Making A Truly Terrible Mistake With Helldivers 2 Update Sony Reverses Course

Google tests much needed google photos feature upgrade, ‘baby reindeer’: stephen king writes essay praising netflix stalker series, brainstorm your narrative.

What is your career change story? Who’s the audience that will be listening to it? These are the overarching questions that will guide your resume writing process. You’ll want to combine your reasons for changing careers with your past experiences and future aspirations.

When crafting your career change narrative, consider these critical questions to create a cohesive and compelling story:

  • What motivated your career change? Reflect on the reasons behind your decision to shift careers. Was it a pursuit of passion, a need for a new challenge or an inevitable industry change affecting your previous role?
  • How do your past experiences contribute to your new direction? Evaluate how your previous roles have equipped you with unique skills and perspectives that will benefit your target industry or role.
  • What accomplishments in your career thus far can illustrate your suitability for this new path? Identify specific achievements that demonstrate your capability and readiness for the change.
  • How have you prepared for the transition? Consider any additional training, courses or self-led learning you’ve undertaken to bridge any skill gaps.
  • What are your long-term goals in this new career? Define what success looks like for you in this new field and how you plan to achieve it.

Choosing The Right Resume Format

The format of your resume is dependent on your career trajectory. A functional resume may be the best way to draw attention to your skills if you’re making a big career leap. A hybrid resume, which combines elements of both the chronological and functional formats, can also work well for career changers, as it allows you to detail your skills while still providing a job history.

Elements Of A Stand-Out Career Change Resume

The typical resume sections are still relevant: Skills, competencies, accolades, experience, volunteer work, education and training. For career changers, add a snapshot of who you are and what you bring to the table. Think of a snapshot as your elevator pitch. Instead of explaining what you are looking for, you highlight your top accolades, position and projects you’re currently working on; it shouldn’t be any longer than three sentences.

For example, “I’m Jane Doe, a marketing professional who brought the newest Target campaign to 100 million Instagram accounts. I’ve excelled in connecting influencers with top brands and have hosted over 150 brand activations.”

Make sure to include all the important elements on your resume to make you stand out. Having a short ... [+] story or narrative of who you are also helps.

Words and Phrases To Include In Resume

When it comes to the actual writing, it’s essential to use language that speaks to both your old and your new career. Choose words and phrases relevant to the job you’re applying for, but also aim to include industry-specific terms from your previous career to highlight the breadth of your experience.

  • Cross-functional expertise: Demonstrates the ability to work across various departments, enhancing team synergy and project outcomes.
  • Quick Learner: Indicates your capacity to rapidly acquire new knowledge and skills, reducing the learning curve in a new role.
  • Innovative Thinker: Shows your capability to think creatively and bring new ideas to the table, driving progress.
  • Versatile Professional: Indicates a broad skillset and flexibility, positioning you as a candidate capable of handling various responsibilities

Do’s And Don’ts Of Resume Etiquette

  • Do focus on your achievements and how they demonstrate your capabilities, not just the tasks you’ve performed.
  • Do quantify your accomplishments with numbers or percentages whenever possible to add weight to your claims.
  • Don’t include unrelated job experiences that don’t align with the position you’re targeting.
  • Don’t gloss over any employment gaps resulting from your career change. Instead, use these gaps to explain how you spent that time productively, such as through continuing education or volunteer work.

Your career change resume aims to get your foot in the door for an interview. Invest time in perfecting your career change resume, and you’ll find that employers will be more than willing to listen to the rest of your story.

Lawyer for Stormy Daniels Says He Believed Trump Was Behind Hush-Money Talks

The lawyer, Keith Davidson, testified that the release of the “Access Hollywood” tape, in which Donald J. Trump described assaulting women, increased the urgency of talks to buy and bury Ms. Daniels’s story of a sexual encounter with him. The $130,000 payment is at the heart of the case.

Here are 5 takeaways from Trump’s trial.

The third week of the criminal trial of Donald J. Trump began with a rebuke: The judge, Juan M. Merchan, held the former president in contempt and fined him $9,000 for repeatedly violating a gag order. He also threatened jail time if the violations continue.

That decision on Tuesday, triggered by Mr. Trump’s comments on social media about witnesses and others, preceded riveting testimony from a lawyer who had arranged a $130,000 hush-money payment to conceal a tryst between Mr. Trump and a porn star, Stormy Daniels, a sum paid weeks before the 2016 election.

The lawyer, Keith Davidson, also described an earlier deal to buy the silence of another woman, Karen McDougal, who said she’d had a longer-term affair with Mr. Trump.

Mr. Trump, 77, is charged with falsifying 34 business records to hide the payment to Ms. Daniels. He has denied the felony charges, and having had sex with Ms. Daniels and Ms. McDougal. He could face probation or prison if convicted.

Here are takeaways from the ninth day of Mr. Trump’s trial, the first prosecution of an American president:

A lawyer recounts two stories and two deals to bury them.

Mr. Davidson, a Los Angeles lawyer, described in painstaking detail the pressured negotiations to pay off Ms. McDougal in summer 2016, which played out in text messages with Dylan Howard, an editor at The National Enquirer. The tabloid had agreed to buy negative stories about Mr. Trump and then bury them.

Ms. McDougal was eventually paid $150,000 and promised other perks, a deal hashed out in sometimes jocular terms.

“We are going to lay it on thick for her,” read one text from Mr. Howard.

Mr. Davidson replied: “Throw in an ambassadorship for me.”

Mr. Davidson testified that his response was a joke, but acknowledged that a deal for Ms. McDougal would help Mr. Trump’s candidacy.

In the afternoon, Mr. Davidson detailed how the arrangement with Ms. Daniels was made later that year as interest in her story increased after the release of the “Access Hollywood” tape, in which Mr. Trump bragged about groping women.

Mr. Davidson testified that he dealt with Michael D. Cohen, who was special counsel at the Trump Organization and who he believed was acting for the benefit of Mr. Trump.

The Links Between Trump and 3 Hush-Money Deals

Here’s how key figures involved in making hush-money payoffs on behalf of Donald J. Trump are connected.

Trump’s gag order violations haven’t cost him much. Yet.

In an eight-page decision , Justice Merchan announced Tuesday morning that Mr. Trump had repeatedly violated the March gag order that protects witnesses, court staff and others. He warned the former president that the court “will not tolerate continued violations,” raising the prospect of “an incarceratory punishment” if he continues. That means jail.

The judge also ordered Mr. Trump to remove the nine “offending posts” from his Truth Social account and his campaign website by Tuesday afternoon.

The fines, however, were a pittance for a billionaire: $9,000. Justice Merchan acknowledged that such penalties “unfortunately will not achieve the desired result” if a person “can easily afford such a fine.”

A banker described how Michael Cohen paid off Stormy Daniels.

Mr. Cohen, who also acted as Mr. Trump’s fixer, made the $130,000 payment to Ms. Daniels, drawing money from a credit line and channeling it through a shell company. Gary Farro, who was a banker with First Republic Bank, described that monetary flow, a dry but essential part of the prosecution’s case.

The payment’s timing — less than two weeks before the 2016 presidential election — speaks to another element of the prosecution’s argument: that Mr. Trump was seeking to illegally influence voters by silencing Ms. Daniels.

During cross-examination, a defense lawyer, Todd Blanche, tried to drive home the idea that the account had no connection to Mr. Trump. Mr. Farro also told Mr. Blanche that if Mr. Cohen “had told me this was a shell corporation, the account wouldn’t have been opened.”

A parade of record keepers took the stand.

Prosecutors also called several witnesses to testify about records, including a C-SPAN archivist and an official with a court reporting company. They were so-called custodial witnesses, who testify about the authenticity of basic evidence in the case, such as videos or deposition transcripts, which all came into play on Tuesday.

The jury saw several video clips from 2016 in which Mr. Trump denied accusations of sexual assault. They also saw a snippet of a deposition Mr. Trump gave in another lawsuit in which he confirmed that he married Melania Trump in 2005, soon before Ms. McDougal and Ms. Daniels say they had sexual encounters with him.

Trump can go to a graduation and is hitting the road.

Mr. Trump had complained about the possibility of missing his son Barron’s high school graduation on May 17, but Justice Merchan said Tuesday that the trial would pause for it.

This week’s trial schedule has already been truncated, with Monday and Wednesday off. Mr. Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, is planning rallies in Wisconsin and Michigan — both battleground states — on Wednesday.

Testimony will resume with Mr. Davidson on Thursday, with a tough cross-examination by the defense expected.

Right before court adjourned, Justice Merchan gave us a reminder of the biggest news of the day: Trump being held in contempt and fined $9,000. The judge noted that a hearing about what prosecutors say are four more violations of Trump's gag order — which could cost him $4,000 more — should only take 30 minutes when we resume on Thursday. After that hearing, Davidson is expected to pick up in his testimony where he left off: On the verge of completing the hush money deal that silenced the story of his client Stormy Daniels.

Michael Gold

Michael Gold

Outside the courtroom, Trump once again called the gag order unconstitutional and repeated his claims that Justice Merchan was biased against him. And Trump, who will be back on the campaign trail tomorrow, complained that the trial was keeping him from campaigning.

And even as Trump has complained that the gag order has kept him from commenting on the trial, a post on his social media account, published while he was in the courtroom, called the trial a “witch hunt” and complained that it was “hours of sitting down and listening to nothing except EXONERATION AND LIES.”

We came out of a somewhat dull line of questioning, in which the prosecution appeared to meander quite a bit, and the conversation of the hush-money payment was back on track. We just saw an email from Michael Cohen that was forwarded from First Republic Bank — where we already know he had arranged the funds for the payment to Stormy Daniels. Keith Davidson, at this point in the narrative, hadn’t quite believed that the money would come. But we know from Gary Farro, an earlier witness, that Cohen had obtained the money.

Pressed on what that meant, Davidson, appearing deeply uncomfortable and choosing his words carefully, says he took it to mean that Trump was not as wealthy as he claimed.

This testimony is taking place in a courthouse around the corner from the one where, in a civil fraud trial a few months ago, the New York attorney general successfully argued that Trump had spent years inflating his worth and overvaluing his properties.

Keith Davidson says that he understood that the deal with Stormy Daniels may have been held up because of “frugality.” “Whose frugality?” Joshua Steinglass, one of the prosecutors, asked, prompting another objection and yet another sidebar.

Joshua Steinglass, the prosecutor, is seeking to introduce…something. But Emil Bove, a defense lawyer, keeps objecting and succeeding in his objections, with a chorus of “sustained” from the judge keeping the court on its tiptoes in this moment of very high tension.

While much of the language the defense objected to is gone from the record, the jury heard it nonetheless. Steinglass is trying to establish that Trump was the beneficiary of the contract and would likely be paying.

We are back from the break. Keith Davidson is now having a discussion with Joshua Steinglass, the prosecutor, about his understanding “that Mr. Trump was frugal.” And that he “didn’t want to spend the money” to silence Stormy Daniels, who was shopping her story of an affair with Trump.

Steinglass asks Davidson whether Cohen was clear at the outset of their negotiations who he was working for. Davidson responds that while he doesn't remember if Cohen ever stated it explicitly then, "it was part of his identity, and he let you know it, every opportunity he could, that he was working for Donald Trump.”

To catch you up, prosecutors have continued to question Keith Davidson, a lawyer who represented two women who claimed to have had affairs with Donald Trump: Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal.

His testimony has pulled back the curtain on the negotiations for the hush-money payments made to both women in the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election. Davidson said that the release of the infamous “Access Hollywood” tape in October 2016 ratcheted up the interest in striking a deal to silence Daniels’s story. While Davidson said he worked directly with Michael Cohen, Trump’s fixer, in the Daniels deal, Davidson said he understood that Trump was the driving force behind the deal.

As we prepare to take a short afternoon break, Keith Davidson provides one last telling quote about Michael Cohen’s finagling of the Stormy Daniels story: “I thought he was trying to kick the can down the road until after the election,” Davidson says. This drives home, again, prosecutors’ stated motivation for the hush-money payment: to silence Stormy and smooth Trump’s road to the White House.

Trump is slumped back in his chair after Davidson is led off the stand.

Joshua Steinglass gets Keith Davidson to recount how Michael Cohen told him “my guy” was in several different states, on the campaign trail, and that Cohen could not make decisions in his absence. Davidson says it meant to him that “Michael Cohen didn’t have the authority to actually spend money.”

Steinglass has made a habit of getting witnesses to explain who these coded references are describing. In this case, “my guy,” in another, “the boss.” It’s always Trump. But Steinglass emphasizing that point reinforces the notion that Trump is the hidden hand operating Cohen on the chessboard. It’s a refrain that may stick with the jury.

Keith Davidson is now reading an expletive-laden email from Cohen, and seems pained to be cursing this much.

Jonathan Swan

Jonathan Swan

The prosecution brings up an email in which Keith Davidson told Michael Cohen that unless he paid the $130,000 by the end of the day — he was already past deadline — Stormy Daniels would consider the hush-money deal canceled. Joshua Steinglass, the prosecutor, makes a point of getting Davidson to confirm that he sent the email to Michael Cohen’s Trump Organization email address — another way of reinforcing for the jury that Cohen was acting as Trump’s agent.

So much about this case is unusual, but we’re seeing one example right now: jurors look hyper-focused as Davidson goes over the details of the hush-money deal reached with Stormy Daniels. In most criminal cases as complex as this one, some jurors might have a hard time following what exactly is important. But here, in this case which the public has been familiar with for years, the name Stormy Daniels is an immediate tip-off that the most important deal of all is under discussion.

Davidson is now being asked about the settlement agreement with Daniels. A lot of evidence is mounting that cuts against the idea Trump would have been unaware of all this.

Emails and text messages are repeatedly being brought up as corroborating evidence. For decades, Trump didn’t want his lawyers taking notes and didn’t use email or text himself.

Keith Davidson, who was Stormy Daniels’s lawyer, just explained that he used pseudonyms for Daniels and Trump in the written deal he drew up, and that Trump’s pseudonym, as has been reported, was David Dennison. Joshua Steinglass, the prosecutor, asks Davidson if David Dennison was a real person and Davidson responds that he was, and that they were hockey teammates. “How’s he feel about you now?” Steinglass asks. “He’s very upset,” Davidson responds to general laughter.

Another bruising quote directed toward Michael Cohen, as Keith Davidson talks about how no one wanted to call him about the Stormy Daniels story. “The moral of the story is that no one wanted to talk to Cohen,” Davidson says.

Prosecutors seem to be betting that jurors are not going to believe that Cohen was operating on his own, that Trump wasn’t aware of what was happening.

Davidson, asked what Cohen’s interest in the Stormy Daniels story was, says, “I believe that Michael Cohen was the personal attorney or general counsel for Donald Trump and that this story involved his client, that that was his interest in the story.”

Kate Christobek

Davidson said he ultimately finalized the Stormy Daniels deal with Michael Cohen for $130,000.

“It could get a lot worse.” Keith Davidson, Stormy Daniels’s lawyer

Prosecutors are arguing in sum that the “Access Hollywood” tape put immense pressure on the Trump campaign, which was floundering after the tape was released. Thus, they say, Michael Cohen was pressured to pay hush money for the Stormy Daniels story. Davidson is a perfect witness for them right now, as he is testifying that he conveyed that things were bad for Trump but — if the Daniels story were public — could get worse.

After the "Access Hollywood" tape became public, Davidson texted Dylan Howard, the editor of The National Enquirer, that Trump's campaign was doomed, using an expletive. Howard responded: “Wave the white flag. It’s over people!”

Susanne Craig

Susanne Craig

Howard, by the way, is a witness everyone would love to hear from. He is a main player in almost every twist and turn of this trial. But it doesn’t look like he will ever take the stand. David Pecker testified he had heard Howard is in Australia and can’t travel because of a spinal condition.

Keith Davidson, speaking about the deal reached with Stormy Daniels, brings up another episode that has been raised multiple times and is key to the timeline here: The “Access Hollywood” tape on which Trump described assaulting women. Davidson calls the remarks, in a euphemism, “troublesome” — and then he says they had “tremendous influence” in raising interest in Daniels’s story.

Davidson, as expected, links the “Access Hollywood” tape directly to the Trump campaign’s heightened desire to purchase Stormy Daniels’s story. It wasn’t until the tape came out, Davidson testifies, that “interest reached a crescendo” in her story.

Keith Davidson says that when he talked to Cohen, he was met with a “hostile barrage” of “insults,” “insinuations” and “allegations” and that went on for quite a while.

Trump’s lead defense lawyer, Todd Blanche, looks delighted as Davidson describes Michael Cohen screaming expletives at him. Blanche laughs and smiles at Trump, who is seated next to him. Blanche has been very focused on destroying Cohen’s credibility with the jury.

As I mentioned a bit earlier, Michael Cohen has been insulted by three witnesses, and jurors are not getting a complimentary portrait of him. But Joshua Steinglass, the prosecutor, just leaned into the witness characterizations of Cohen: Davidson referred to a “jerk” without using his name and Steinglass asked, with some humor in his tone, “Who was that jerk?” Prosecutors were expecting to elicit this testimony and Steinglass playing into it signals that they’re somewhat comfortable with it.

Prosecutors are not shying away from Cohen's behavior, questioning witnesses about his hostile or intense interactions with them.

This definitely has the feeling of the prosecution fronting negative information about Cohen so as to take the sting out of it when the defense goes after him on the stand.

Matthew Haag and Alan Feuer

How Trump prosecutors used C-SPAN to inform jurors of sex assault claims.

Prosecutors on Tuesday called a seemingly low-profile witness to testify in the Donald J. Trump hush-money trial: Robert Browning, executive director of archives at C-SPAN, the cable television network that broadcasts government proceedings. But Mr. Browning ended up playing an important role.

Mr. Browning spent about 20 minutes on the stand, and prosecutors began with a straightforward question: What is C-SPAN? Then they played a series of key clips from the network, starting with a Trump campaign rally in October 2016 at which the candidate attacked two women who had accused him of sexual assault.

The decision by prosecutors to introduce the videos through Mr. Browning’s testimony was a way to contend with a ruling that the judge, Juan M. Merchan, had made at the trial’s start. The judge stopped the prosecution from presenting direct evidence about the many women who had accused Mr. Trump of assault as the 2016 campaign neared its end.

But Justice Merchan allowed prosecutors to give a taste of that evidence to the jury in a different way: by playing the videos of Mr. Trump’s reactions to the allegations by the women.

When the judge agreed to admit the videos two weeks ago, he said they showed how Mr. Trump was “agitated by these allegations.” And that emotional state, he suggested, was fair game for the jury to hear about.

The videos appeared to be a way for the prosecution to start building its case that the Trump campaign had become increasingly concerned about its potential vulnerabilities with female voters.

That will be important as prosecutors turn to telling their story about how Mr. Trump wanted to silence a tale of sexual scandal that the porn star Stormy Daniels was shopping around, out of a fear that it could further alienate women.

Hush money trial judge raises threat of jail as he finds Trump violated gag order, fines him $9K

Donald Trump has been fined $9,000 for repeatedly violating a gag order that barred him from making public statements about witnesses, jurors and some others connected to his New York hush money case.

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump was held in contempt of court Tuesday and fined $9,000 for repeatedly violating a gag order that barred him from making public statements about witnesses, jurors and some others connected to his New York hush money case. If he does it again, the judge warned, he could be jailed.

Prosecutors had alleged 10 violations, but New York Judge Juan M. Merchan found there were nine. Trump stared down at the table in front of him as the judge read the ruling, frowning slightly.

It was a stinging rebuke of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s insistence that he was exercising his free speech rights and a reminder that he’s a criminal defendant subject to the harsh realities of trial procedure. And the judge’s remarkable threat to jail a former president signaled that Trump’s already precarious legal standing could further spiral depending on his behavior during the remainder of the trial.

Merchan wrote that he is “keenly aware of, and protective of,” Trump’s First Amendment rights, “particularly given his candidacy for the office of President of the United States.”

“It is critically important that defendant’s legitimate free speech rights not be curtailed, that he be able to fully campaign for the office which he seeks and that he be able to respond and defend himself against political attacks,” Merchan wrote.

Still, he warned that the court would not tolerate “willful violations of its lawful orders and that if necessary and appropriate under the circumstances, it will impose an incarceratory punishment.”

With that statement, the judge drew nearer the specter of Trump becoming the first former president of the United States behind bars.

“This gag order is totally unconstitutional,” Trump said as court adjourned after a day that included testimony from a Hollywood lawyer who negotiated two of the hush money deals at issue in the case. “I’m the Republican candidate for president of the United States ... and I’m sitting in a courthouse all day long listening to this stuff.”

Trump is used to having constant access to his social media bullhorn to slam opponents and speak his mind. After he was banned from Twitter following the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol by his supporters , Trump launched his own platform, where his posts wouldn’t be blocked or restricted. He has long tried to distance himself from controversial messages he’s amplified to his millions of followers by insisting they’re “only retweets.”

But he does have experience with gag orders , which were also imposed in other legal matters. After he was found to have violated orders in his civil fraud trial, he paid more than $15,000 in fines.

Trump also is subject to a gag order in his federal criminal election interference case in Washington. That order limits what he can say about known or reasonably foreseeable witnesses in the case and about court staff and other lawyers, though an appeals court freed him to speak about special counsel Jack Smith, who brought the case.

Tuesday’s ruling in New York came at the start of the second week of testimony in the historic case, which involves allegations that Trump and his associates took part in an illegal scheme to influence the 2016 presidential campaign by purchasing and then burying seamy stories. The payouts went to a doorman with a torrid yarn; ex-Playboy model Karen McDougal, who had accusations of an affair; and to porn performer Stormy Daniels, who alleged a sexual encounter with Trump. He has pleaded not guilty and says the stories are all fake.

Trump deleted, as ordered, the offending posts from his Truth Social account and campaign website and has until Friday to pay the fine. The judge was also weighing other alleged gag-order violations by Trump and will hear arguments Thursday. He also announced that he will halt the trial on May 17 to allow Trump to attend his son Barron’s high school graduation.

Of the 10 posts, the one Merchan ruled was not a violation came on April 10, a post referring to witnesses Michael Cohen and Daniels as “sleaze bags.” Merchan said Trump’s contention that he was responding to previous posts by Cohen “is sufficient to give” him pause on whether the post was a violation.

Merchan cautioned that the gag order “not be used as a sword instead of a shield by potential witnesses” and that if people who are protected by the order, like Cohen, continue to attack Trump “it becomes apparent” they don’t need the gag order’s protection.

Cohen, Trump’s former attorney, has said he will refrain from commenting about Trump until after he testifies. On Tuesday, he said in a text message to The Associated Press: “Judge Merchan’s decision elucidates that this behavior will not be tolerated and that no one is above the law.”

In other developments, testimony resumed Tuesday with a banker who helped Cohen open accounts, including one used to buy Daniels’ silence. Trump’s attorneys have suggested that the payments were aimed at protecting his name and his family — not influencing the outcome of the presidential election.

Jurors also began hearing from Keith Davidson , a lawyer who represented McDougal and Daniels in their negotiations with the National Enquirer and Cohen. He testified that he arranged a meeting at his Los Angeles office during the summer of 2016 to see whether the tabloid’s parent company American Media, Inc. was interested in McDougal’s story. At first they demurred, saying she “lacked documentary evidence of the interaction,” Davidson testified.

But the tabloid at the behest of publisher David Pecker eventually bought the rights, and Davidson testified that he understood — and McDougal preferred — it would never be published. Asked why American Media Inc., would buy a story it didn’t intend to run, Davidson said he was aware of two reasons.

“One explanation I was given is they were trying to build Karen into a brand and didn’t want to diminish her brand,” he said. “And the second was an unspoken understanding that there was an affiliation between David Pecker and Donald Trump and that AMI wouldn’t run this story, any story related to Karen, because it would hurt Donald Trump.”

As for Daniels, the October 2016 leak of Trump’s 2005 “Access Hollywood” tape — in which Trump bragged about grabbing women sexually without asking permission — had “tremendous influence” on the marketability of her story. Before the video was made public, “there was very little if any interest” in her claims, Davidson told jurors.

A deal was reached with the tabloid for Daniels story, but the Enquirer backed out. Though Pecker testified that he had agreed to serve as the Trump campaign’s “eyes and ears” by helping to squelch unflattering rumors and claims about Trump and women, he drew the line with Daniels after paying out $180,000 to scoop up and sit on stories. Davidson began negotiating with Cohen directly, hiked up the price to $130,000, and reached a deal.

But Daniels and Davidson grew frustrated as weeks passed and instead of the money, she got excuses from Cohen about broken computers, Secret Service “firewalls” and the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.

“I thought he was trying to kick the can down the road until after the election,” Davidson said.

While Cohen never explicitly said he was negotiating the deal on Trump’s behalf, Davidson felt the implication was clear.

“Every single time I talked to Michael Cohen, he leaned on his close affiliation with Donald Trump,” Davidson said. Plus, he figured that Trump “was the beneficiary of this contract.”

The GOP presidential hopeful is charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in connection with the hush money payments. The detailed evidence on business transactions and bank accounts is setting the stage for testimony from Cohen, who went to federal prison after pleading guilty in 2018 to campaign finance violations and other crimes.

The trial — the first of Trump’s four criminal cases to come before a jury — is expected to last for another month or more.

Joel Embiid guaranteed the 76ers would beat the Knicks. He was dead wrong.

The reigning NBA MVP came up short again in the playoffs as the 76ers lost in the first round

resume writer new york

Shortly after the New York Knicks pulled off a heist for the ages last week in the closing minute of Game 2, Joel Embiid guaranteed that the Philadelphia 76ers would dig out of their 2-0 hole and win the first-round NBA playoff series because they were “the better team.” The reigning MVP was sincere, but no one who has closely followed his career had any reason to believe he could deliver on his pledge.

Since Embiid arrived in Philadelphia 10 years ago, the 76ers have hired and fired general managers, dumped coaches, parted with stars and recycled the supporting cast to no avail. When the Knicks finished off a series-clinching 118-115 victory in Game 6 on Thursday at Wells Fargo Center, they ensured the 76ers would fall short of the Eastern Conference finals for the 23rd consecutive season. And after advancing to the second round in five of the previous six seasons, Philadelphia couldn’t make it out of the first round despite the celebrated summer hiring of Coach Nick Nurse and a breakout season from Tyrese Maxey, who was named the NBA’s most improved player last week.

The only common bond on the court throughout this decade of suffering is Embiid, who returned from knee surgery in early April in hopes of finally leading the 76ers over the hump in the wide-open and injury-ravaged Eastern Conference. Instead, the 30-year-old center added another chapter to his checkered postseason résumé and made some new enemies in New York along the way. Embiid’s latest early exit would have come even earlier if not for Maxey, whose last-minute flurry and 46 points in Game 5 extended the series and set the table for Philadelphia’s season-ending home loss.

“The whole series I could have played better,” Embiid said. “Maybe if I was better, we would have won it. That’s on me. That’s why we lost. I have to find a way to get better as a basketball player, a person and a leader and come back and hope that everything else aligns.”

Though Embiid turned in one of his best playoff performances with 39 points and 13 rebounds and benefited from an unusually productive night from Philadelphia’s bench, it wasn’t enough to overcome his flat showings earlier in the series and an unshakable opponent. Knicks star Jalen Brunson, who capped a brilliant first round with a game-high 41 points and 12 assists, drilled a pair of clutch three-pointers midway through the fourth quarter before setting up Josh Hart for a go-ahead three-pointer with 24.4 seconds left.

As has happened many times, Embiid’s health, conditioning, mobility, mental composure and decision-making held him back against a quality opponent in the playoffs. During his seven postseason runs, Embiid has never prevailed against a 50-win team. Brunson joins Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler and Jayson Tatum on the list of stars who have outplayed Embiid in the biggest playoff moments.

“Not everybody, even the superstar players, play great every night,” Nurse said when asked about Embiid’s inconsistency, including a perplexing Game 5 dud. “He plays great most nights. I think he would say and most people would say he didn’t play that good the other night. He played so bad he had a triple-double. He played good four out of five. We’ll take that.”

The Knicks, nursing their own injuries, consistently outworked Embiid on the glass, exploited his struggles defending jump shooters and survived his 50-point performance in Game 3. As Embiid’s production and impact consistently tailed off late in games because of exhaustion, New York’s role players found ways to make greater contributions than Philadelphia’s superstar. Embiid aided the Knicks’ cause with the type of careless turnovers and ill-advised shots that have plagued him in crunchtime for years, and he was outscored by Brunson 14-6 in the decisive fourth quarter in Game 6.

Any effort to credit Embiid’s nobility for plugging through an array of health concerns — knee pain, Bell’s palsy and a migraine before Game 5 — was undercut by his unsportsmanlike antics. He earned flagrant fouls for pulling Knicks center Mitchell Robinson to the court in a dangerous manner in Game 3 and for hitting Brunson across the face in Game 5. He flopped to sell calls, complained loudly about the officials and even called out Philadelphia’s home crowds for being overrun by ravenous Knicks fans.

Perhaps Embiid overlooked the many virtues that have made the Knicks so popular, the same qualities that have often been lacking from his 76ers teams over the years. New York was built to be a five-man collective rather than two stars flanked by office furniture. New York hit the hardwood in pursuit of loose balls and never quit on an offensive rebound opportunity. New York made its own luck rather than dwelling on injury excuses or threatening to file grievances over missed calls.

Brunson, a likable underdog, let his game do the talking and displayed a knack for stepping up in big moments. New York fans savored their victories and directed profane chants at Embiid because they were confident they had a winning playoff formula and knowledgeable enough to know they didn’t need to fear him. New York fans, who prompted Philadelphia’s owners to buy and give away thousands of tickets to Game 6 in hopes of salvaging a home-court advantage, knew Embiid was dead wrong after Game 2: The Knicks were the better team.

“Everybody in our locker room tried,” Embiid said. “We played hard. I know it wasn’t enough. I can tell you everybody in our locker room cared. We gave up a lot of offensive rebounds, but it’s not because we wanted to. We tried our best.”

Embiid was eliminated by East powerhouses such as the Boston Celtics (2023) and Miami Heat (2022) in recent years, but this loss to the Knicks — a well-coached group that gets by on grit rather than star power — best encapsulates the 76ers’ fundamental shortcomings. Embiid, for all his talent, isn’t cut out to be a singular savior, and his unreliable health has prevented the 76ers from fostering championship-level continuity.

After failed stints with Jimmy Butler, Ben Simmons and James Harden, Embiid lucked into an ideal co-star in Maxey, whose electric scoring and infectious joy gave Philadelphia fans a reason to remain invested. Yet Maxey’s impressive series came to a quiet close when he scored 17 points on 6-for-18 shooting in Game 6.

Philadelphia’s plan going forward will be to use its abundant salary cap space to find long-term difference-makers to support Embiid and Maxey. Pursuing Paul George is a popular notion, but any desirable target must decide whether he wants to tie his career to Embiid’s unpredictability. George, who has spent the past five seasons hoping for the chronically injured Leonard to make it to the playoffs healthy, knows those frustrations better than anyone.

“You can’t just put people together for one year and hope it’s going to work out,” Embiid said. “[Maxey and I have] some experience together, and that’s the way to go. We’ve got to keep going and keep building around it.”

Whether 76ers President Daryl Morey lands a big fish this summer, the roster will undergo another round of changes. Mercifully, Tobias Harris, who went scoreless in 29 minutes Thursday, has reached the end of his lavish contract and almost certainly will be moving on. Virtually everyone else on the roster can be sacrificed if necessary.

Even in a best-case scenario, the 76ers next season will need to dramatically improve their chemistry while working around whatever new maladies might strike Embiid. That’s why New York’s thrilling triumph was so unsurprising and why Embiid’s guarantee rang hollow. Ten years of evidence made it clear this would happen; confident declarations are simply no match for a torn meniscus, a misguided team concept and a lack of late-game poise.

“I still believe if everything went right, we had a chance,” Embiid said. “But everything didn’t go right.”
