Of course, there is often competition for these high positions at school, so what is the best way to apply and have a good chance at becoming Head Boy or Head Girl?

Why Would You Want  to  Be Head Boy Or Head Girl?  

So, why should you aspire to be Head Boy or Head Girl? There are so many benefits to gaining this role , and here are a few of them:  

• This position looks great on your CV.   When you are applying for a job (especially a position of leadership), being Head Boy/Girl will show your potential employer that you have had experience in leadership and organising things. Not to mention the people skills being Head Boy/Girl will give you.   
• Being Head Boy/Girl gives you experience in leadership and organisation –  you will most likely be asked to attend events outside of school time and play a part in organising these events too, which will give you an idea as to what it is like to have a position of leadership in the future (possibly even your career).  
• The position usually sets your university application apart from the rest.  If you are looking to apply to university (especially Russell Group Universities), being a Head Boy/Girl shows them that you have the enthusiasm to study at their university. However, it is important to remember that being Head Boy/Girl will not guarantee your place at university – academic ability takes precedence.  It is also important to note that certain universities (including Oxford) do not look at whether you were Head Boy or Girl at all on your application.   

Think About What  the  Role May Involve  

The amount of work you are given to do as Head Boy or Girl may differ depending on your school,  and it is important to think about the responsibilities you will have to take on before you  apply.   

Head Boys and Girls tend to be involved with events which happen outside of school time such as networking events and parent’s evenings for any year group.  Being a Head Boy or Girl means that you are setting the example for the school , so you will probably be needed at open evenings for prospective students and subsequently  Year 6 induction days.  You should be willing to turn up to these events, and they should take priority over any extracurricular activities you may be a part of.  Because you are setting the example for younger students, your grades at school may play a part in whether you are picked to be Head Boy or Girl.

One of the most important skills you need to be a Head Boy or Girl are leadership skills.  You will most likely be asked to organise events either by yourself or with the other Head Boy/Girl opposite you, and you will most definitely need resilience and management skills to do this. Of course , being Head Boy/Girl is an opportunity to work on these qualities/skills through experience,  but you must have some idea of what you are to do when you apply for the position.   

Another important skill which schools tend to look for is public speaking.  Head Boys and Girls must deliver speeches to their fellow students, as mentioned above. When applying to be Head Boy or Girl in most schools, you will be asked to write a letter to  a senior staff member stating your reasons as to why you want the position.  This letter could be  written to your Head of Year, Head of Sixth Form, or even your Headteacher – it will all depend on which school you go to, so make sure you check!   

Your letter should show off examples of when you have shown the qualities which your school is looking for in their Head Students.  Perhaps you have shown teamwork skills in your sports team or have shown leadership skills when organising a charity event in the past. You should also mention how being Head Boy or Girl would benefit you personally (try not to make it sound as if you only want the position to put it on your CV). It is good to mention the experiences you are looking to gain by being Head Boy or Girl. • Arrive early/on time.  Turning up late to your interview, no matter when it is, will give a bad impression of you to your interviewer. If you cannot turn up on time for your interview, then how are you going to be on time to an open evening or speech in the future? Arriving early will show preparedness for your interview and enthusiasm for the position.  
• Dress appropriately . Again, not doing this will create a bad first impression for your interviewer. You may be asked to wear your school uniform if you have one . Make sure you have the basics covered – shirt tucked in, tie straightened, hair tidied, and shoes polished. If you are in sixth form, you should arrive in clothes which are smart, modest and not too uncomfortable – you don’t want to be distracted by your clothes while talking to your interviewer. • Practice!  It is a bad idea to turn up on the day and recite your speech for the first time. It doesn’t matter if you are memorising your speech or reading it from a script – you will need practice in delivering it. This is another good way to proofread your speech while also practicing the way you want to deliver it.  Perhaps you would like to put emphasis on certain words or phrases, or simply just need to go over it a few times to help with some tricky parts which you find difficult to read aloud.   

What If You Don’t Get It?  

If you don’t end up getting offered the position of Head Boy or Girl, then there is no reason to panic!  You will be given plenty more opportunities in the future for positions and experiences which look just as prestigious on your CV. As stated at the beginning of the article,  being Head Boy or Girl will not swing the decision of  whether or not  you get into university.

Ms King, staff, parents and fellow St Mary’s girls, I am both honoured and proud to stand before you as the head girl for 2016. Honoured to have been chosen from a dynamic year group and honoured to have been afforded the opportunity to lead you all with integrity and grace. Proud because of all that St Mary’s stands for and proud to be able to represent each and every one of you sitting before me.

This morning, in keeping with the fresh and sunny weather, the leaders arrived at the chapel wearing neat blazers and bright smiles, ready to be inducted. We pledged allegiance to our office and to the school, and, as each one of us has an important role to play, I know that my fellow leaders will conduct themselves with honour and enthusiasm in carrying out the functions related to their positions.

Matrics, we are a strong grade, blessed with our own remarkable talents. Over the past four years some of these talents have emerged and have been recognised, yet within each of us lie many latent talents. With an intense academically focused year ahead, I think some of those talents may have to remain hidden for a little while longer.

Over the last four years we have STOMPed through Trees4Africa, pioneered bush school, brought the circus to the runway in our dazzling fashion show, and taken the matrics of 2015 on a journey to Marrakesh in planning their dance. Each of these activities brought individual talents to the fore.

That is a wonder of this school. There is so much to offer. Our special teachers are dedicated and skilled, providing us with such a varied programme and constantly guiding us. They allow our individual talents to bloom and have shown us how, when put together, we make a winning team. For me, it is important to acknowledge that our success lies in drawing from each other’s strengths, rather than overcoming challenges alone. And that applies to the whole school. Girls – we need each other.

Ms King has emphasised in the past the importance of women supporting each other in school, in the workplace and beyond.

Sheryl Sandberg, CEO of Facebook and a successful businesswoman, also acknowledges the strength women obtain and the heights they can reach by building each other up. I am reminding you of this today as we have grown up in a society that has placed us in a constant state of competition with each other on the basis of beauty standards, cultural backgrounds and historical privilege, and so often we feel compelled to separate ourselves from one another in order to achieve great things.

My deputies, Sasha de la Rey and Mutsa Danha, and I want you to think about how much more you can achieve in a positive environment with a good team, as we intend to demonstrate in leading the school this year.

Going into the busy year ahead, I would like to share some tips with you to help you power through 2016.

Procrastination is not your friend. Don’t wait until it’s too late to realise it.

Surround yourself with good people – those who will celebrate and motivate you.

Ask for help when you need it – you are in a place that encourages you to do so.

You are a work-in-progress — don’t expect to get everything right the first time! Matrics, this only applies for the first few months. Come October, best we all be shining.

No one is holding you back — not your friends, your teachers, nor your parents; you are the only one who can limit yourself.

You are so much stronger than the world has ever told you you could be. The world is waiting for you to set it on fire.

Girls – always hold these ideals and aspirations in your heart: to be independent, respected, and respectful… to be kind, brave and confident. All the women named in the poem were young and courageous, and so are we. We are often told that as St Mary’s girls we have the capacity to do great things, and we do, but the attitude and mindset with which we approach different situations is crucial.

This year I encourage you all to smile. It is not intended to be an acronym, a catchphrase or a casual instruction, but rather, a memory trigger about the attitude with which you approach all endeavours. Let me remind you of a few points I brought up earlier:

Leaders – in fulfilling your duties with discipline and respect, remain mindful of the important task at hand; be approachable and friendly… and do it with a smile.

Girls – find and nurture your talents and when you have found your passion and you excel, smile with pride! Teamwork is crucial and often proves to be a lot more fun than going it alone. We have the potential to learn from each other and to accomplish so much more together when we do it with a smile in a constructive environment.

I bet you’ll be smiling when you find the master key among all the keys, the one that opens every door to success… and when that happens, let me know. And girls, when we achieve great things together as independent, brave and confident young women, always remember to smile!

Head Girl and Head Boy Introductions

I feel very honoured to have been given this role as Head Girl. Ramsey has given me the confidence to be able to take on this role and I feel so grateful to everyone here. The chance to be Head Girl has always appealed to me and I feel extremely proud.

As Head Girl so far this year, I have given a speech at Open Evening, stating all the opportunities I have had at the school. Also, Head Boy (Lewis Crow) and I have voiced the opinions of Year 11 about not being allowed out at lunch times and also talked of setting up new clubs to be run by prefects, in order to give the younger years more opportunities. Later in the year I will be representing the school, as Head Girl at the Remembrance Service in Halstead. Lastly, my aim this year is to help improve the school with new ideas, such as a one way system. Also to make sure all students at The Ramsey Academy have their opinions listened to.

This school term has got off to a good, yet challenging, start and has seen to it that both Emma and I have had a lot of work to do. So far we have written a prefect rota, spoken at Open Evening (twice) and written a good few bits for this newsletter! This work is not set to change as we will be going to many functions, including the Remembrance Day Parade. This year we have (as a school) taken part in many sporting competitions such as: football, rugby, netball and table tennis, all with varying degrees of success, but all students had a good time in each of them.

This week (the last week of this half term) will be Diversity Charity Week which has a ‘Shriek Week’ theme. To create the spooky atmosphere, the school has been decorated with ghosts and ghouls and a fancy dress themed non-uniform day. There has also been a boys versus girls netball grudge match which the boys won 4-2 much to the girls’ dismay.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Head Boy so far and I look forward to the rest of the year, except of course the exams!

Kentucky Settling for Mark Pope Proves Basketball Coaching Landscape Has Changed

At least in the coaching carousel, the term “blue blood” has never meant less.

That’s the only logical conclusion one can draw from the Kentucky Wildcats ’ rapid-fire search to replace John Calipari, who shocked the college basketball world earlier this week by fleeing Lexington for the Arkansas Razorbacks job . Big, bad Kentucky, one of the most tradition-rich teams and potentially the most financially rich program in big-time college basketball, swung and missed at its big targets and landed on a coach who has never won a men’s NCAA tournament game. 

There are many positive things that can be said about reported new Wildcats head coach Mark Pope . He’s without question a sharp basketball mind, building one of the more intricate offenses in the country with the BYU Cougars . He coached the Cougars to three top-20 KenPom finishes in five years, two more than Calipari coached Kentucky to in that period (though that may say more about Calipari than Pope, in this conversation). He has won at a place with as limited a recruiting pool as any in Division I, a feat even more impressive after BYU’s move to the Big 12 in 2023–24, He was an excellent player in Lexington, part of the 1996 national championship team that is royalty in town forever. Pope was likely due for a better job than the one he had at BYU. 

But Kentucky? The same Kentucky that, not 12 hours before news of this hire broke, was rumored to be throwing around $100 million to try to sway two-time defending national champion Dan Hurley from the UConn Huskies to Lexington? A program that essentially ran Calipari, a title-winning coach who has taken three schools to Final Fours and produced more pros than anyone in college basketball over the last decade, out of town? Kentucky prides itself on being bigger, better and more serious about basketball than anyone else and wants to hire … BYU’s coach, who has advanced in the NCAA tournament as many times as this writer has? 

Scott Drew chose to stay at Baylor instead of making the jump to Kentucky.

Each coach who deflected interest in this job (Hurley, Scott Drew and Nate Oats) may have had his own reasons for doing so. Hurley made clear Monday night after winning title No. 2 that his wife had no desire to leave the Northeast, and Drew’s family and roots in Waco, Texas, were reportedly the reasons he walked away from a potential deal . But if there’s ever an illustration that the gap between the purported elite jobs and the rest of the sport, it’s that coaches from Alabama, Baylor and a Big East program in UConn rebuffed KENTUCKY of all places to stay where they’re at. 

Kentucky had long seemed like the last bastion for a “name” hire in an era that has seen huge coaching jobs go to relatively inexperienced choices. The Louisville Cardinals , in three years, have hired one coach with no head coaching experience in Kenny Payne and another from a mid-major with no tournament wins in Pat Kelsey. The Duke Blue Devils and North Carolina Tar Heels were forced into internal hires in Jon Scheyer and Hubert Davis, with the jury still out on both. The Villanova Wildcats hired Kyle Neptune off one season with the Fordham Rams , with results not promising so far. The Florida Gators hired Todd Golden, who went 23–22 in the WCC as the head coach with the San Francisco Dons . Even the flashier names, like the Georgetown Hoyas reeling in Ed Cooley or the Maryland Terrapins landing Kevin Willard, came with the caveat that neither had advanced past the Sweet 16 in their head coaching careers. Eric Musselman and Calipari set off dominos with their lateral-ish moves this cycle, but both seemed to be getting out ahead of disgruntled fan bases. 

In the NIL era, where the primary barrier to entry to recruit top talent is “how big a check can you write?”, the advantage of being at a blue blood has dissipated some. Talent is more spread out, football powerhouses across the SEC can find a few bucks to throw at basketball and you can win almost as much as you would at Kentucky without living in the fishbowl that is Lexington. 

Does this mean Pope won’t win at Kentucky? Of course not. A good coach can be a “bad” hire. Perhaps the best way of putting this is to call it a risky hire. The “blue blood” label used to offer you a level of security that you’d be able to hire one of the premier candidates on the coaching market. That’s not a guarantee of success, but it’d be a lot easier to bet on Kentucky succeeding at the level its fans expect under a coach like Drew, who has won a title and consistently earned top-three NCAA tournament seeds, than it is with Pope. He may soar, using the strengths of the UK job to his advantage to build the elite teams he never could with the limitations of BYU and the Utah Valley Wolverines. But he also may fail, and there’s little doubt SEC coaches will sleep better tonight knowing the league’s top program is coached by Mark Pope, not Calipari, Drew, Oats or Hurley. 

If nothing else, the Pope hire won’t win the news conference for Kentucky. He could win over much of the Kentucky faithful early on by successfully coaxing star guard Reed Sheppard (whose father, Jeff, played with Pope on the 1996 title team) to return for his sophomore season. Even then, there will certainly be skeptics. 

Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart is staking his legacy at the school on a largely unproven coach. A program of Kentucky’s stature should have landed a bigger name than Mark Pope, and the fact that it didn’t says everything about the coaching market in 2024.

World’s oldest conjoined twins Lori and George die aged 62

Guinness World Records are saddened to learn of the deaths of the oldest living conjoined twins and oldest female conjoined twins ever , Lori and George Schappell .

They passed away on Sunday 7 April at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania due to undisclosed causes, as per their   obituaries published by Leibensperger Funeral Homes.

They were 62 years 202 days old – nine years older than the second-oldest female conjoined twins ever recorded.

Born in Pennsylvania, USA, on 18 September 1961, Lori and George (formerly named Dori) had partially fused skulls, sharing vital blood vessels and 30% of their brains (the frontal and parietal lobes).

Despite being joined at the head, the twins differed in many ways.

Lori was able-bodied but George had spina bifida and could not walk. He sat in a wheelchair-type stool which Lori pushed around.

George enjoyed a successful career as a country singer, whilst Lori was a trophy-winning ten-pin bowler. Lori also worked at a hospital laundry for several years during the ‘90s, arranging her schedule around George’s gigs, which took them around the world to countries including Germany and Japan.

They became the world’s first same-sex conjoined twins to identify as different genders in 2007, when George started presenting as a man after revealing himself to be transgender.

He’d previously gone by the name Reba (after his idol, Reba McEntire) as he disliked the rhyming names that he and Lori were given.

The twins lived independently in a two-bedroom apartment in Pennsylvania. They each had their own room – alternating nights spent in each one – and tried to live their own individual lives as far as possible.

They took turns practising their separate hobbies; they said they effectively ‘zoned out’ when in each other’s room.

They also showered separately, using the shower curtain as a barrier while one showered and the other stood outside the bath.

Whenever they were asked if they wished they’d ever been separated, Lori and George always said no. “Would we be separated? Absolutely not. My theory is: why fix what is not broken?” George said in a 1997 documentary, which can be viewed above.

The twins defied all the predictions of medical professionals who said that they wouldn’t live past the age of 30. They became the oldest female conjoined twins ever in 2015, overtaking Masha and Dasha Krivoshlyapova who died aged 53.

Lori and George are survived by their father, six siblings, several nieces and nephews, and an extended family of friends.
