Title Details

Description, people who liked the hollywood biographies collection also liked these free titles:.

Lauren Bacall, author of By Myself, in which she describes her marriages to Humphrey Bogart and Jason Robards.

The top 25 most compelling Hollywood autobiographies – ranked!

Inspiring, indiscreet and occasionally gasp-worthy – to mark the publication of Woody Allen’s Apropos of Nothing, we arrange the best Tinseltown memoirs in order of excellence

25. A Story Lately Told (2013) and Watch Me (2014) by Anjelica Huston

The two volumes of Anjelica Huston’s autobiography are a shrewd account of her life with wry comments on the alpha-males in it, including her father John Huston and longtime boyfriend Jack Nicholson.

24. Little Girl Lost (1990) by Drew Barrymore

She published this at 15 years old and like so many movie autobiographies, the title is a pre-emptive ironic twist on whatever the author is most famous for – in Drew Barrymore’s case, a child-acting star turn in Steven Spielberg’s classic ET, and then falling prey to substance abuse. As she says: “I had my first drink at age nine, began smoking marijuana at 10, and at 12 took up cocaine.”

23. The Lonely Life: An Autobiography (1962) and This ’n That (1987) by Bette Davis

Bette Davis published this autobiography in the 60s, at the end of her great period, and updated it in the 1980s – after her daughter BD Hyman published a Mommie Dearest-type memoir of her – detailing her life and times, with true leading-lady hauteur rising above the general awfulness and the fallout from four fraught marriages.

22. My Story (1959) by Mary Astor

This bestseller from the golden-age legend Mary Astor recounted one of Hollywood’s most scandalised lives. In 1936, she was divorced, after an affair with the dramatist George S Kaufman, and the press coverage became obsessed with her diary, which supposedly chronicled her sexual adventures. Much argued about in court, the diary was impounded in a bank vault and finally burnt.

21. What Just Happened? Bitter Hollywood Tales from the Front Line (2002) by Art Linson

Art Linson (the producer of Fight Club) gives an amusing account of the unendingly humiliating business of a life spent trying to get movies made – there is a wince-inducing anecdote of trying to persuade Alec Baldwin to go back into his trailer and shave off the inappropriate straggly beard he had grown just before filming. Linson describes the process of sucking up to powerful people as “bog snorkelling” and “grabbing the knee pads”.

20. Veronica: The Autobiography of Veronica Lake (1970)

Veronica Lake, 1950.

The fatale screen-goddess’s autobiography was written towards the end of her life, hitting back at her reputation for being difficult and recounting her professional partnerships with Joel McCrea and Alan Ladd – and with her legendary, lustrous hair, which she had to cut during the second world war to deter female factory workers from copying it.

19. What Falls Away (1997) by Mia Farrow

Mia Farrow’s autobiography was widely praised for her eloquent memoirs, recounting her troubled family life and her relationships with Frank Sinatra, André Previn and most dramatically of all, Woody Allen. The book was published five years after she first made public allegations that he had sexually molested seven-year-old Dylan, which he has consistently denied, which were investigated by the authorities and for which no charges were brought.

18. Memoirs of a Professional Cad (1960) by George Sanders

The suave and mellifluous actor’s memoir sported jovially with his onscreen reputation, recounting his remarkable early life in Russia, his character-acting adventures in Hollywood and his marriage to Zsa Zsa Gabor. Written before his slide into ill-health and depression, it maintains a dapper jauntiness.

17. Brave (2018) by Rose McGowan

It was the courage and uncompromising commitment of Rose McGowan that formed the arrowhead of the #MeToo movement and the campaign to bring Harvey Weinstein to book. Part of what this memoir does is tell us what lies beneath a lot of Hollywood’s racy anecdotes and gossip: a world of abuse and bad faith.

16. You’ll Never Eat Lunch in this Town Again (1990) by Julia Phillips

The producer Julia Phillips became the first woman to get a best picture Oscar with The Sting in 1973 and she was a driving force behind Taxi Driver in 1976 – but it was this tell-all book about the cocaine-fuelled, vanity-charged horror of Hollywood that made her a legend. (Cocaine use bankrupted Phillips.) David Geffen, Steven Spielberg and Richard Dreyfuss came off as ego-addled narcissists and the book so infuriated the industry that she really was banned from Morton’s, the A-listers’ restaurant.

15. What’s It All About (1993), The Elephant to Hollywood (2010) and Blowing the Bloody Doors Off (2018) by Michael Caine

Michael Caine’s three books of autobiography and his meandering thoughts on the acting craft give us his life from his beginnings as Maurice Micklewhite from a working-class family to his success in Swinging London and his breakthrough roles in Alfie, Zulu and The Italian Job. He recounts a legendary meeting with John Wayne in the lobby of a Hollywood hotel who advised him: “Talk low, talk slow, and don’t say much”. Perhaps Caine’s legendary delivery really is the Brit version of Wayne.

14. Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star (2005)

Tab Hunter.

In the 50s, Tab Hunter was an impossibly gorgeous slice of B-movie beefcake, a sexy actor and singer for whom Jack Warner created Warner Bros Records. Hunter tells us how, despite being intensively marketed to swooning women, he in fact preferred men, in an era in which homophobic paranoia went hand-in-hand with red-baiting – and had affairs with Anthony Perkins and the figure-skater Ronnie Robertson.

13. Me: Stories of My Life (1991) by Katharine Hepburn

Katharine Hepburn’s garrulous, wayward memoir is a fluent and engaging but scattershot performance (in which you can clearly imagine the famous quavering Bryn Mawr voice) perhaps designed to keep at bay those who would take too close an interest in her private life. She handles tactfully her relationships with Howard Hughes and her legendary co-star Spencer Tracy, and gives nothing to those readers who believed that she was gay.

12. Yes I Can (1965) by Sammy Davis Jr

A massive bestseller in its day, with an aspirational title that is sometimes mockingly extended with “… if Frank Sinatra says it’s OK” in honour of the line from This Is Spinal Tap about his perceived subservient position to Ol’ Blue Eyes in the Las Vegas Rat Pack. Despite the conservatism of his later years, when he endorsed the presidency of Richard Nixon, his battle against racism is stirring. There is an extraordinary, Ballardian description of how he lost his eye in a car accident – it fell prey to the bullet-shaped horn button on the steering wheel of his 1954 Cadillac. Davis gallantly helped the other driver out of her car with the eye still dangling out of its socket.

11. My Autobiography (1964) by Charles Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin in a scene from the film City Lights.

Chaplin brought a richly Dickensian flair to this autobiography: with the same mix of sadness, sentimentality, humour and warmth that formed the bedrock of the Hollywood storytelling style he pioneered. He gave it to us in three acts: the grinding poverty in London; the staggering success in Hollywood; and then the chilly anti-communist cold shoulder and final retreat to that well-known leftwing enclave, Switzerland. Chaplin name-checks grand acquaintances such as the Prince of Wales, but he isn’t big on acknowledging other silent-movie greats and is reticent about his love life.

10. Adventures of a Suburban Boy (2003) and Conclusions (2020) by John Boorman

Boorman, one of many movie directors who turn out to be beautiful writers as well, vividly and disarmingly describes his childhood in south London and then in Ireland with the kind of engagement that he would show in his great personal film Hope and Glory . He gets his start making documentaries at the BBC, and then there are his experiences in Hollywood dealing with the fragile egos of Burt Reynolds, Richard Burton and Marlon Brando, who pointedly told Boorman what Michael Winner had said to him: “You are a great actor, I am not a great director, please do whatever you like.”

9. American Prince: A Memoir (2008) and The Making of Some Like it Hot: My Memories of Marilyn Monroe and the Classic American Movie (2009) by Tony Curtis

The impossibly handsome Tony Curtis matured from being a B-movie swashbuckler into a brilliant dramatic and comic actor. After a depiction of his tough upbringing in the Bronx, New York, he gives a seductive view of the Hollywood playground, and his meetings with Laurence Olivier, Frank Sinatra and Billy Wilder. His subsequent book detailed the making of Some Like It Hot and his complex relationship with Monroe, with whom he had had a relationship that flowered again during filming (he was married to Janet Leigh, she to Arthur Miller). This resulted in a pregnancy that miscarried.

8. Lulu in Hollywood (1982) by Louise Brooks

Lousie Brooks in The Canary Murder Case, 1929.

Towards the end of her life, Louise Brooks revealed herself to be a great writer about the film business and this memoir, published when she was 78, cemented her reputation. Like so many stories of early Hollywood, it is the story of an inventor and a pioneer, someone who helped create a whole language now taken for granted. After her dull Kansas childhood, Brooks came to New York in the 1920s as a dancer and made the acquaintance of Walter Wanger, Herman Mankiewicz and Charlie Chaplin , but found greatness in Europe with the Austrian director GW Pabst. Her glossy bob hairstyle became a daring sexual brand identity, but this strong, vital woman found herself frozen out of Hollywood by its tetchy menfolk.

7. The Ragman’s Son: An Autobiography (1988) by Kirk Douglas

Kirk Douglas ’s story of his rise to greatness in the Hollywood golden age with movies including Champion, Spartacus, Paths of Glory and Ace in the Hole is a compelling read, for the blistering energy (reproduced in his prose) with which he strove to get away from his former poverty, and his rage at himself for not having confronted the antisemites earlier in his life. Despite his 65-year marriage, Douglas was serially unfaithful, and the book is naive about sexual politics, but there are some ripe stories about his relationships with Rita Hayworth, Marlene Dietrich and Joan Crawford. While lovemaking on her rug, Crawford disconcertingly murmured to him: “You’re so clean. It’s wonderful that you shaved your armpits when you made Champion.”

6. By Myself (1978) by Lauren Bacall

Lauren Bacall describes her career on Broadway and in Hollywood, her marriages to Humphrey Bogart and Jason Robards, and her affair with Frank Sinatra (who features as anecdote fodder in so many of the books about this period). She was a Jewish girl dreaming of being like Bette Davis, and made her mark first as a fashion model who caught the attention of Howard Hawks who cast her in To Have And Have Not, where she began an affair with Bogart, her married co-star, who was 25 years older – although their subsequent marriage was very happy. This was the love of Bacall’s life.

5. Everything and Nothing: The Dorothy Dandridge Tragedy (1965) by Dorothy Dandridge

Dorothy Dandridge, 1951.

Co-written with the seasoned Hollywood ghostwriter Earl Conrad , this book was completed just before the death of the singing and acting star Dandridge, the first African-American to receive a best actress Oscar nomination (for Carmen Jones in 1954). She was a pioneering activist who had to contend with sexism and racism, and her career – after the sensational Carmen Jones – was hampered by her lover and director Otto Preminger, who told her to accept only leading roles. This was well-meaning but ill-judged advice. She was a campaigner with the NAACP and introduced Martin Luther King Jr at one event.

4. A Life in Movies (1986) and Million Dollar Movie (1992) by Michael Powell

These two parts of Michael Powell’s autobiography – he was the legendary director who worked with Emeric Pressburger – are an essential account of cinephilia and movie creativity. His is a compelling story of his early career in silent movies, working with Rex Ingram and then Alfred Hitchcock, his later collaboration with Pressburger and then the passionate admiration of Martin Scorsese, which effectively relaunched his reputation in the 1970s. Powell writes simply but rather movingly about falling in love with Thelma Schoonmaker , Scorsese’s brilliant editor, and their subsequent marriage.

3. The Kid Stays in the Picture (1994) by Robert Evans

Made into a movie in 2002, this memoir from the legendary actor-turned-Paramount producer is a great Hollywood insider tell-all, with a title quoting Darryl Zanuck’s remark when some of Evans’s erstwhile acting colleagues demanded he be fired from the 1957 film The Sun Also Rises. He was married many times, including to the Love Story star Ali MacGraw, and as a producer, he was the driving force behind Love Story, Rosemary’s Baby, Chinatown and The Godfather – but also the notorious flop, The Cotton Club . To make it, he associated with a shady financial backer called Roy Radin, whose drug connections and contract-killing murder resulted in a trial in which Evans scandalised the business by refusing to testify. He was himself convicted of cocaine trafficking in 1980, but always claimed he was only a user.

2. Mommie Dearest (1978) by Christina Crawford

Joan Crawford with her adopted daughter Christina.

For many, this memoir is the primal scene of Hollywood family dysfunction, with a title that has become ironic shorthand for bad parenting. Christina Crawford was the adopted daughter of Joan Crawford. Her book alleged that Joan was a controlling, boozing tyrant who would beat Christina and who was more interested in her (flagging) career and many affairs with men and women than in being a mother. And then in later life, when Christina had an acting career, she insisted on temporarily taking over Christina’s role in a TV soap called The Secret Storm, as Christina was in hospital for a cyst removal: at the time, Christina was 24 and Joan was 60. Perhaps this extraordinary fact alone would be enough to damn Joan Crawford, but many of her friends and her first husband Douglas Fairbanks Jr denounced the stories as untrue.

1. The Moon’s a Balloon (1971) by David Niven

David Niven, 1958.

This is the unchallenged champ of the Hollywood memoirs: glamorous, louche, exciting, amusing, name-dropping, ridiculous, outrageously sexual but seasoned with real tenderness and piquancy as Niven describes his unhappy childhood, the heartbreaking loss of his first wife, and also his military service in the second world war, which involved an encounter with Winston Churchill, who congratulated him on quitting the movies to volunteer, but added: “Young man, you did a fine thing to give up your film career to fight for your country. Mark you, had you not done so it would have been despicable.” Unlike most movie memoirs, there is no tough upbringing in the slums: Niven’s childhood was comfortable (though unhappy); he was the public schoolboy who went from Stowe to Sandhurst and, unlike so many Brit actors who had learned to fabricate a posh voice in rep, Niven’s was the real thing, and his authentic light charm entranced Samuel Goldwyn at the high point of Hollywood’s golden age. His book is packed with anecdotes about Hollywood pals, including the notorious Errol Flynn, but the most extraordinary anecdote is about losing his virginity at 14 to a Piccadilly sex worker. Before they went to bed, she told him to “wash” in a kidney-shaped metal bowl by the bed. “Not yer hands!” she then rasped. Since the book’s publication, its mythology has been debunked, Niven was subsequently found to have concealed the extent of his compulsive infidelities and created the fiction of a happy second marriage, and even exaggerated a little his commitment to serving in the British Army during the war. But this book is addictive and unmissable.

‘Priscilla’ & 9 Other Great Movie Biopics About Inspiring Women

From glamorous fashionistas to talented artists, these film biographies offer some of the most compelling portrayals of inspiring real-life women.

Film biopics have become a popular genre in the film industry, with many acclaimed features being nominated for Academy Awards. This is especially true for the Best Actor category, where actors are often praised for fully embodying and transforming into real-life people. Austin Butler got a nod for his role in Elvis last year; this month, Sofia Coppola 's latest film about the singer's ex-wife and actress, Priscilla Presley , has successfully piqued moviegoers' interest.

It's not hard to guess why some people find biographies to be the most compelling category — telling the story of real-life individuals in an engaging and inspiring way is not an easy task to do. Still, many films have succeeded in doing so. Surprisingly, by 2016, less than a quarter of all biographical films in the past had told women's stories. While the majority of celebrated biopics are male-fronted, there are also plenty of captivating, powerful tales about inspiring women viewers should add to their watchlists .

10 'On the Basis of Sex' (2018)

Director: mimi leder.

On the Basis of Sex portrays the true story of the fierce Ruth Bader Ginsburg (played by Felicity Jones ), depicting her personal struggles and continuous fight for equal rights. It also features the early cases of Bader Ginsburg's complex career, which eventually led to her nomination as U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice. Not only is this glossy and powerful biographical film female-centric but also female-directed.

Mimi Leder's inspiring biopic sheds a relevant light on Bader Ginsburg's incredible achievements . The female political figure broke gender norms and paved the way for many women in the field by becoming the second woman and the first Jewish woman ever appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Furthermore, Bader Ginsburg was also a supporter of gay rights and other marginalized groups.

9 'Frida' (2002)

Director: julie taymor.

This 2002 must-see biography stars the immensely talented and undeniably charismatic Mexican actress Salma Hayek in one of her most memorable performances, for which she was Oscar-nominated. Frida provides audiences with an intriguing biopic of one of the world's most famous and recognizable artists , Frida Kahlo . Set in Mexico City, the 2002 film highlights the painter's controversial life, tracing her tempestuous relationship with her mentor and other illicit affairs. It also tackles Frida's career, ahead-of-her-time thinking, and unique demeanor.

No doubt, Kahlo is one of the most important and influential women to ever live. After all this year, the surrealist artistic legend endures a cultural icon who has always worn her Mexican identity with pride, inspiring other artists — particularly women — along the way. With that being said, Julie Taymor 's film is certainly worth checking.

8 'Jackie' (2016)

Director: pablo larraín.

This heart-wrenching biography of J. F. Kennedy 's long-term wife, Jacqueline Kennedy — often regarded as a fashion icon known for her European chic style — offers viewers an intimate look inside the life of the American socialite, writer, and ex-first lady. It tackles Kennedy's grief and trauma after her tragic husband's assassination. Audiences see her forced to console her children, plan her husband's funeral, and vacate the home she restored.

Emotionally charged, visually absorbing, and featuring a tour de force, Academy Award-nominated central performance from Natalie Portman, Jackie is a compelling and haunting biography , especially for those looking to get more knowledge on the events that followed one of the most shocking real-life passings so far. Between winning an Emmy for her White House documentary and restoring the White House, Jacqueline led an accomplished life. As such, it is only understandable that many still see her as a role model today.

7 'What's Love Got to Do with It' (1993)

Director: brian gibson.

Like other talented women on this list, Angela Basset won great acclaim for her role in What's Love Got to Do with It , a fascinating Tina Turner biography that explores the rock star's personal life and career, depicting her rise to stardom. Before Basset got an Oscar nod for her supporting performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever just this year, her efforts had been previously acknowledged in the Best Actress category with the 1993 film.

On top of Basset's astounding performance in the Brian Gibson biopic, this entertaining film also makes for a moving viewing. While it celebrates one of the most recognizable voices in the music industry, it also deals with Turner's turbulent domestic life. Most importantly, What's Love Got to Do with It is a powerful biopic that highlights the star's courage to break free from her ex-husband, which is an act of bravery as an abuse survivor. Sadly, the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll passed this year at 83.

6 'Priscilla' (2023)

Director: sofia coppola.

Like many other films by Sofia Coppola, A24's most recent movie is a meticulous, intimate portrait of girlhood and isolation. This time, the director carefully depicts the teenage and young adult years of Priscilla Presley, based on her memoir "Elvis and Me." Coppola assures that a more accurate side of Elvis and Priscilla's often romanticized relationship, which began when she was only fourteen, is addressed. As many would agree, this is something that Baz Luhrman's acclaimed 2022 film failed to achieve .

With aesthetically pleasing imagery and a haunting narrative, Priscilla is a better-than-average biopic . Presley was a major fashion icon in the 1960s, inspiring the looks of well-known artists like Lana Del Rey (whom Coppola actually reached out to regarding an original track for the film) and Amy Winehouse . Over time, she also established herself as a successful business executive.

5 'Erin Brockovich' (2000)

Director: steven soderbergh.

Starring the gifted Julia Roberts , Steven Soderbergh 's movie — which earned him a Best Director nomination — focuses on an unemployed single mother who becomes a legal assistant and almost single-handedly brings down a California power company accused of polluting a city's water supply.

Erin Brockovich was an essential element in building a case against Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) involving groundwater contamination in Hinkley, California, and Roberts perfectly brought her to life. Thanks to her resilient, determined, and hardworking nature, the environmental activist and go-getter endures an inspiring role model today, encouraging both activists and mothers. Furthermore, this intriguing and engaging movie is often considered one of the best biopics ever .

4 'Hidden Figures' (2016)

Director: theodore melfi.

Directed by Theodore Melfi , Hidden Figures is set in the 1950s and 1960s and tells the extraordinary story of three African-American women in the NASA space program as 'human computers': Katherine G. Johnson , played by Taraji P. Henson , Dorothy Vaughan , portrayed by Octavia Spencer , and Mary Jackson , brought to life by Janelle Monáe.

It is always empowering to see highly intelligent in STEM. However, it is even more special when the events depicted on the big screen actually happened. These women were undoubtedly essential to the success of early spaceflight, and the incredible biography Hidden Figures provides an engrossing, educative take on the remarkable accomplishment.

3 'I, Tonya' (2017)

Director: craig gillespie.

I, Tonya benefits from a career-best performance from everyone's favorite Barbie, Margot Robbie , at its center — as it would seem, it even made the star realize that she's a great actor . This biographical movie illustrates the life and career of the legendary American figure skater Tonya Harding . It tackles her connection to the life-changing 1994 assault on her rival, Nancy Kerrigan .

Despite hardship and everything that she undeservedly went through, Harding's legacy stands the test of time; she remains one of the most talented people in her field and a role model for young skaters all around the globe. I, Tonya is one of the best and most well-crafted biopics of recent times, and it seamlessly sheds a light on Harding's resilience while also sending out a powerful message on the importance of following one's dreams.

2 'The Passion of Joan of Arc' (1928)

Director: carl theodor dreyer.

The Passion of Joan of Arc is one of the most remarkable classic silent films . Based on the actual record of the trial of Joan of Arc , the moving feature tells the story of the inspiring but doomed teenage warrior as she is captured and eventually brought to Rouen, Normandy to stand trial by French clergymen loyal to the English.

Widely regarded as a landmark of cinema, Carl Theodor Dreyer 's movie is a simple but well-crafted biography with a moving and unforgettable performance from Renée Jeanne Falconetti . What makes Joan of Arc so inspiring is the fact that she persuaded many French people in need of hope by partaking in a war of liberation, despite her youth, her lack of military training, and the fact that she was a female. She was an incredible leader who suffered a tragic fate — Joan of Arc was burned at the stake at only 19 years old for heresy, witchcraft, and "cross-dressing" (meaning dressing like a man), something that clerics proclaimed was an abomination to God.

1 'Persepolis' (2007)

Director: marjane satrapi, vincent paronnaud.

Among the best, most groundbreaking female-directed films is Persepolis , an animated feature that tells the real-life story of a young, intelligent girl named Marjane Satrapi (played by Chiara Mastroianni ) as she matures while facing the Iranian Revolution. It is based on Satrapi 's bestselling, award-winning autobiographical French graphic novel of the same name.

Tackling the struggles of adolescence and childhood during the political climate in Iran in the 70s and 80s, this beautifully animated black-and-white film based on Satrapi's life is both heartbreaking and fun, making for an incredible pick for those who love animated biopics. Although nominated for Best Animated Feature in 2008's Academy Awards, it eventually lost to the fan-favorite Ratatouille .

Best rock star biographies

1 . Keith Richards – Life

No list of rockstar memoirs would be complete without a mention of the Rolling Stones guitarist and rock stalwart Keith Richards. Life spans several decades of music, drugs and life on the road – from the more glamorous elements to the hard reality of some of what he went through. As with all the best memoirs, Life shows a new side of its subject while retaining the kind of honesty and vulnerability which was often hidden from those who only saw his public persona.

Best rock star biographies

2 . Mötley Crüe - The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band

Known for their extreme antics and tales of debauchery, Mötley Crüe has become synonymous with a life of excess that accompanies rock music. A culmination of 30 years worth of jaw-dropping material involving Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx, Vince Neil, and Mick Mars , the book features scandalous celebrity love affairs and dark stories involving extreme drug addiction. The book has also since been made into a Netflix Original Movie starring Machine Gun Kelly and Douglas Booth.

Best rock star biographies

3 . Anthony Kiedis – Scar Tissue

The Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman is a 21st-century rocker you’d expect to have plenty of revealing stories, and Scar Tissue is certainly a revealing read.

Kiedis’s drug use has hardly been a secret throughout his career, but this is an at-times-sensitive look at his early exposure to substances and how it shaped his life and experiences as his band enjoyed a rapid rise and ultimately grew into one of the world’s biggest.

Best rock star biographies

4 . Slash — Slash: The Autobiography

Few rock stars of the 80s and 90s are as instantly identifiable as Slash, and the Guns N’ Roses guitarist lived a proper rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle during his time with the band. This is documented in detail in his 2007 autobiography, with covers ups, downs, excess and near-death in the kind of detail you can only get from someone who lived through it all… and almost died in the process.

Best rock star biographies

5 . Lemmy – White Line Fever

The title of Lemmy’s autobiography gives a bit of a clue to what to expect, but there’s more to it than just drugs and excess. It’s not just about Motörhead, either, although the band does have a big role to play. White Line Fever is often conversational in tone, and that gives you an idea of Lemmy’s real, authentic voice – it’s the sort of thing which not every memoir needs, but the feeling of him being right there with you certainly helps in this case.

Best rock star biographies

6 . Patti Smith – Just Kids

Smith’s memoir isn’t just about music or even just about her relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, but rather a poignant look back at a very specific version of New York which we will surely never see again. Published in 2010, Just Kids captures a time, a place and the people united by both to make for a fascinating memoir, and we’re grateful to Smith for bringing it all back to life with such honesty.

Best rock star biographies

7 . Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run

'Writing about yourself is a funny business…But in a project like this, the writer has made one promise, to show the reader his mind. In these pages, I’ve tried to do this.' — notes Bruce Springsteen, from the pages of his autobiography, Born to Run . The concept for the book spawned from his 2009 Superbowl half time show, which Springsteen noted as being so exhilarating, the experience simply had to be documented. From his Catholic upbringing in Freehold, New Jersey , to the traumatizing events which shaped some of his greatest lyrical work, this is a delightfully gritty tale depicting a rock 'n' roll great

Best rock star biographies

8 . Nikki Sixx – The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star

Some of the most eye-catching rock memoirs aren’t even really about the music, and this work from the Mötley Crüe man is a case in point. The bassist presents a no holds barred depiction of life on tour, in the studio and on heroin, all presented in diary form, during a period where addiction to the drug almost killed him. Throw in retrospectives from Sixx and his bandmates and it makes for compelling reading.

Best rock star biographies

9 . Kim Gordon – Girl in a Band: A Memoir

Girl in a Band takes us back to the 1980s heyday of Sonic Youth through the words of founding member Kim Gordon. The memoir looks back at Gordon’s childhood before exploring her career in music, her marriage to bandmate Thurston Moore, and the eventual unravelling of that relationship. The portrait of Gordon’s life in Rochester and LA is honest and exploratory without ever being performative, while painting a picture of plenty of her contemporaries from Sonic Youth’s rise to prominence.

Best rock star biographies

10 . Mark Lanegan - Sing Backwards and Weep

Coming from Seattle in the 80s, Mark Lanegan saw everything grunge had to offer and managed to get out the other side. This frank autobiography does not paint an idolised life of a rockstar, but one that has knocks, scrapes and near misses. It's packed with the lowest of lows and the highs are all, well, something else. You need to read this and it's even more poignant after his passing.

Best rock star biographies

11 . Elton John - Me

This autobiography covers Elton John's pre-fame years, his early career and most riotously depraved years. It's hilarious, touching and, as far as we can tell, pretty honest given how often John is not depicted as a flawless hero character. This biography was written in collaboration with music critic Alexis Petridis, who captures John's voice perfectly while delivering thoroughly well-written prose.

Best rock star biographies

12 . Viv Albertine - Clothes, Clothes, Clothes. Music, Music, Music. Boys, Boys, Boys.

Slits guitarist Viv Albertine's 2014 autobiography made an impact that went far beyond punk fans interested in her band. It's a feminist work that looks at the realities of being a woman in the 70s and 80s, amped up by being a pivotal part of the punk scene. The book also covers her work after the Slits, who disbanded in 1982.

13 . Laura Jane Grace - Tranny: Confessions of Punk Rock's Most Infamous Anarchist Sellout

Grace, the vocalist for punk band Against Me!, has a unique story to tell. And she tells it brilliantly in Tranny. The singer and guitarist came out as transgender in 2012, and her memoir – written with journalist Dan Ozzi and published four years later – is a brutally honest look at her experiences with gender dysphoria alongside her breakthrough into the punk scene. As well as shedding light on Grace’s past, it allows us a look at Butch Vig and Bruce Springsteen through fresh eyes.

14 . Mark Oliver Everett – Things the Grandchildren Should Know

Everett, better known as E, has enjoyed a strong following with his band Eels without ever attaining worldwide superstar status. Everett’s emotional depth has always come through in his songwriting, so it’s no surprise to see him eloquently and sensitively detail the role of others’ deaths in his own life after losing both parents and his sister before turning 35. There isn’t the excess of other memories, but it’s just as emotionally affecting, if not more so.

15 . John Lydon – Rotten: No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs

Lydon, known as Johnny Rotten during his time with the Sex Pistols, had front-row seats to the birth of punk in the UK. As you can guess, this makes for great memoir fodder. The Londoner tears in to anyone and everyone you can imagine from the “boring” society infiltrated by his band. As the man himself says: “A lot of people feel the Sex Pistols were just negative. I agree, and what the fuck is wrong with that?”

Mandisa, the Christian music singer who competed on “American Idol” and then pursued a Grammy-winning career, has died. She was 47.

A representative confirmed to The Times on Friday that the California-born artist “was found in her home [in Tennessee] deceased.”

“At this time, we do not know the cause of death or any further details,” the representative said in a statement. “We ask for your prayers for her family and close-knit circle of friends during this incredibly difficult time.

K-Love, a Christian radio station, first reported the news of Mandisa’s death Friday morning. David Pierce, the station’s chief media officer, praised Mandisa for her devotion to Jesus and God.

Dickey Betts, guitarist and founding member of the Allman Brothers Band, dies 80

Dickey Betts, a founding member and guitarist for the Allman Brothers Band, died Thursday of cancer and COPD, his family announced. The musician was 80.

April 18, 2024

“Her kindness was epic, her smile electric, her voice massive, but it was no match for the size of her heart,” Pierce said in a statement . “Mandisa struggled, and she was vulnerable enough to share that with us, which helped us talk about our own struggles. Mandisa’s struggles are over. She is with the God she sang about now. While we are saddened, Mandisa is home. We’re praying for Mandisa’s family and friends and ask you to join us.”

The singer, born Mandisa Lynn Hundley on Oct. 2, 1976, is a five-time Grammy-nominee who earned her first prize in 2014 for her album “Overcomer.” The 22-track album also earned Mandisa a gospel/contemporary Christian music performance nomination at the 56th Grammy Awards. Her Grammys haul also included two pop/contemporary gospel album nominations and a contemporary Christian music album nod.

Years before earning her first Grammy nomination, and eventually her sole Grammy win, Mandisa showcased her talents on Season 5 of “American Idol.”

“Mandisa ... just ‘Mandisa‘” was how the singer introduced herself in 2006 to judges Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell, before belting the opening notes of Alicia Keys’ “Fallin.’”

Eleanor Coppola, matriarch of the Coppola filmmaking family, dies at 87

Eleanor Coppola, who documented the making of some of husband Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic films and raised a family of filmmakers, has died at 87.

“Terrific, everything I hoped you would be you were that, Mandisa,” Cowell said, “and I like the fact that you want to be known as one person.”

Without hesitation, the trio of original “Idol” judges sent Mandisa along to Hollywood, the next step on a weeks-long journey that would end with her cracking the Top 10 finalists. She was eliminated after her performance of Shania Twain’s “Any Man of Mine,” which landed her in the bottom three.

“I want to thank my fans so much, your support has meant the world to me and the prayers that have been lifted up for me I know will continue to have full force for me,” she said upon her elimination. “I thank you, and I bless you in the name of Jesus.”

After her time on “American Idol,” Mandisa released her first album, “True Beauty,” in 2007. The debut album earned Mandisa her first Grammy nomination. Also known for albums “Freedom” and “What If We Were Real,” Mandisa worked with a variety of Christian artists throughout her career, including TobyMac, Kirk Franklin and Jon Reddick, according to K-Love.

Mandisa released her final album, “Out of the Dark,” in 2017, featuring songs “Unfinished” and “Bleed the Same.” The 18-track project shares its title with her 2022 memoir, which chronicles her rise to fame and the challenges that tested her faith. That came years after she released her first memoir, “Idoleyes,” in 2008.

“Even in our darkest and lowest moments, God is in the trenches with us. He’s always at work on our behalf, loving on us and carrying us up out of the dark,” Mandisa wrote in an Instagram post celebrating her 2022 memoir. “He NEVER fails. I’m forever thankful that He keeps hope alive.”

9 Gay Adult Performers Tell Their Coming Out Stories

For Pride, Falcon and NakedSword have released a mini-documentary called PRIDE: Pornstar Coming Out Stories. The feature recounts the coming out experiences of Cade Maddox, Josh Moore, Skyy Knox, and Steven Lee along with August Alexander, Leo Forte, Beaux Banks, Dante Colle, Mickey Taylor, Adam Ramzi, Adrian Hart, Logan Stevens, Sharok, Boomer Banks, Colton Reece, Max Konnor, Riley Mitchel, Sean Zevran, Wade Wolfgar, Zario Travezz, Devin Franco, Drew Sebastian, Liam Riley, and Nic Sahara.

"I'm so impressed with these stories, some of these guys have had an easy time coming out and some not so easy, but all of them have one thing in common: they are all brave men for sharing their stories and baring it all on camera in a whole new way," Tim Valenti, Falcon and NakedSword president, said in a statement. "I'm proud that we are able to share their stories on NakedSword."

Below we've shared nine of those stories but you can view the rest in the documentary here .

Some of us never had a "coming out" because there never was a closet to be in. Such was the case with Skyy Knox who said he was supported from a young age. "I was born out," he said. "I have been gay my entire life, since I was a child." This went from pointing out hot guys at the mall from a young age to playing with dolls and in heels that his mother bought him. The support ran through the rest of his family according to him.

Though some of us that live in big cities can feel like half of the world is gay, it's a stark difference from many living in small towns. Such was the case for Max Konnor who grew up in small-town Georgia, where he was ordained as a minister at 14 and became the pastor of a church at 16. But moving to New York to pursue musical theater, he was introduced to something entirely new. "I was suddenly surrounded by a lot of different things and a lot of different people I had never experienced in my liittle town," he said. "It forced me to realize some things about myself." One of those things was his sexuality.

As a result, Konnor wrote an email to his parents, who already had their own suspicions. "Sending that letter for me, there was not only the fear of letting my family down but of letting my whole church community down," he said. "It was received a lot better than I was expecting it to be received."

Cade Maddox

Remember the days of MySpace? Cade Maddox definitely does as the social platform was integral to his coming out. After messaging a guy on the site while in high school, his sisters got into his account and saw the messages, later outing him to his mom. "I was taking my mom somewhere one day and she just asked 'are you gay?'" he recalled. Taken aback, he decided to come clean. Kind of. "I think my answer was 'no, I'm bisexual.' It was just easier to say at the time." He received support from his whole family.

Ramzi's story was more complex than some. "I grew up in an Armenian-American community and I grew up in a divorced family so I feel like I had to come out twice," he said. It took until age 21, even after dating someone for the coming out to occur. "I was so scared of what it actually meant to call yourself gay so even the first man I dated, I still thought that afterwards I was going to eventually meet a girl and get married because that's what men did," he said. "Especially Armenian men."

When he came to the realization that wasn't his future, he told his mother who was very supportive. His father ended up forcing the coming out, having already suspected, in an extremely intense scene. When Ramzi told him what he wanted to hear, his father became quiet and said "why don't you just put a bullet in my head." Ramzi's sister, who is also queer and had come out before, was also present.

"It really, really hurt to hear those words," Ramzi said. "I realized that he wasn't saying this out of hate, he was saying this out of fear." Since, the family has strengthened its relationship.

Adrian Hart

Hart realized his sexuality early, at 13. After dating a girl for about a week he realized it wasn't for him and moved on. But he wouldn't have his coming out moment until he was 16.

After parents discovered messages between him and a guy, they deleted every guy's number from his phone as a preventative measure. "But I was steadfast in that like 'I'm gay and I probably shouldn't have been taling to someone that was 20 but I'm not going to therapy,'" he said. And while they asked whether he wanted to wear a dress and transition, he clarified things pretty succinctly: "No, I'm still the same person. I just like dick mom and dad."

Beaux Banks

Apparently Beaux Banks was the last to find out he was gay. Though he was engaged in gay sex , he didn't identify as gay. "No, I'm just me," he would reply.

At age 21, his mom had enouugh and demanded an explination for the gay porn she was finding on the computer and phone. So there, at church, Banks finally fessed up.

"Once I had the conversation with my mom, I had no problem saying I was gay," he said.

Boomer Banks

While Boomer Banks didn't have a "coming out" per se, it certainly wasn't easy. "I dont really have a coming out story because I was queer from the get go and unapologetic about it," he said. "I was the kid that if you called him a faggot, I was like 'oh yeah, what's up? What are we talking about?'" And though that sounds ultimately cool and self-assured, it certainly didn't make for an easy childhood, with Banks explaining that growing up in California involved a lot of "hair pulling," "face scratching," and "copious" amounts of fights. "It was very hard to be who I was."

"I was actually in rehab when I was 16 years old and I think a part of why I ended up going to rehab was the difficulty I had with accepting myself as a gay person," Sharok said. For him, being gay was a death sentence being that he grew up in the 1990s during the HIV/AIDS epidemic and a family member died of the disease. But, while in rehab, he came out to his girlfriend at the time and then went on to tell his parents later. While his mother was immediately accepting, it took his father a minute before he later came around.

Devin Franco

Growing up Mormon in New Mexico, Franco decided to come out after prom. But, knowing how religious his family was, he did so prepared to be kicked out and lose his car. Once he got home his parents were already sleeping.

"I started crying while thinking about it," Franco said. His crying eventually woke up his mother. "At that point it was kind of like an emotional avalanche and I just let it all out and told her that I was gay." Franco said that while they have grown to accept him, his family still believes he shouldn't act on his homosexuality.

Sean Zevran

While he respects and realizes that some people have fraught or more complicated coming out experience, Zevran's was pretty smooth sailing. "I kind of just let people figure it out," he said. "The first person in my immediate family that figured it out was my mom." At the time, Zevran was a gogo dancer performing in gay clubs. As photos of him performing made their way to Facebook, the began to pop into his mom's feed which prompted her to ask the question.

Eva Evans, TikTok star of NYC-based videos, dies at 29

Eva Evans

New York TikTok star Eva Evans, creator of the comedic web series “Club Rat,” has died at 29.

The content creator and filmmaker’s sister Lila Joy Baumgardner announced the news on Instagram over the weekend.

“after 24 hours, i still find myself in a constant cycle of denial and acceptance, so i know how unbelievable and hard to process this news will be,” she wrote, adding, “i wish i had Eva here now to refer to because she would have better words and know how to say what i don’t.”

Evans, whose cause of death was not made public, had built an audience of 300,000 followers on TikTok, where she shared thoughts and stories about her life in New York City. In her final video , posted last week, she said that she was “rooting” for fellow internet creator JoJo Siwa after the singer and dancer announced that she was pivoting away from her child-friendly “Dance Moms” persona.

Evans also directed and starred in the Amazon Prime Video web series “ Club Rat ,” which rolled out last year with five episodes and saw Evans play an influencer navigating dating in New York City after a chaotic breakup.

A public celebration of life for Evans is scheduled for Tuesday in downtown Manhattan, Baumgardner said online.

As the news of her death circulated, those who knew Evans shared emotional tributes.

In an Instagram story, actress Julia Fox shared Evans’ last TikTok about Siwa and expressed her grief in a tear-filled video.

“I always saw her like a little sister and I know she looked up to me. And that’s the kind of person she was, sticking up for Jojo, always sticking up for me,” Fox said. “She was so young, still had so much to do in life.”

Photographer and director Ashley Armitage also shared in an Instagram post Sunday that she “loved Eva the minute I met her.”

“Eva was smart, hilarious, creative, caring, magnetic, confident. She moved through the world loving and laughing at everything,” Armitage wrote. “She had such an orbit, people flocked to her and wanted to be in her world. Eva was open and vulnerable and made people who just met her feel like they’d been friends for years.”

Musician and content creator Nigel Roxbury, also known as Chris Murch, said in a TikTok video Sunday that he “woke up in complete shock” after hearing the news.

“New York City won’t be the same, ever,” he said. “So creative, so nice, very genuine person.”

And cinematographer Sonja Tsypin, who had worked with Evans, shared a series of stills of Evans from a film the pair never finished making.

“There are no words for what I’m feeling. I laughed the hardest with you. We would get so caught up talking that other people at the dinner table would get annoyed,” Tsypin wrote in the post. “I made all my first films with you and we were fearless. I would do anything to have you back.”

Porn stars who left the biz: Where are they now?

Porn stars who left the biz: Where are they now?

Fox411: Jenna Jameson and Traci Lords are but a few previously X-rated performers who have managed to parlay their controversial careers into the mainstream

Many times porn stars are considered social outcasts once they leave the adult entertainment industry, but there are a few previously X-rated performers who have managed to parlay their controversial careers into the mainstream.

Jenna Jameson Once dubbed the queen of the adult entertainment genre, she used her fan base to gain the attention of Hollywood. The mother of three starred in major movies, such as Howard Stern’s “Private Parts,” and appeared on TV shows, like “Family Guy.” The 43-year-old also published the best-selling book “Sugar” and her autobiography “How to Make Love Like a Porn Star: A Cautionary Tale.”

Sasha Grey She won Female Performer of the Year at the 2008 AVN Awards but then segued into a role in 2009’s  “The Girlfriend Experience.”  She also played herself in the HBO hit series “Entourage.” The star dabbled in modeling, appearing in ads for Max Azria and American Apparel. Like Jameson, she is also an author, penning novels “Neü Sex” and “The Juliette Society.”

Film Review The Girlfriend Experience

In this film publicity image released by Magnolia Pictures, Sasha Grey is shown in a scene from Steven Soderbergh's film, "The Girlfriend Experience." (AP Photo/Tribeca Film Festival) ** NO SALES ** (AP)

Sunny Leone She was born Karenjit Kaur Vohra and later adapted her stage persona and went on to star in dozens of adult films. She later made the surprising change from adult actress to  Bollywood star  in 2012. She announced her retirement from porn in 2013. In July 2017, Leone adopted a child with her husband Daniel Weber.

Sibel Kekilli The German actress is known for her role as Shae in the HBO series  “Game of Thrones”  however prior to her small screen achievement she worked in pornography. The actress kept her adult film job a secret from her family but when she began to get acting parts in German films, a reporter unearthed her salacious past which Kekili condemned as a smear campaign. Since then she has become an advocate for women’s rights.

Traci Lords She broke the law when she broke into the adult business. At only 15, the now 49-year-old  used a fake ID  to land herself in Penthouse magazine and a slew of adult movies. When she was caught in 1986, porn distributors had to pull all of her films because they featured her as a minor. But that setback didn’t stop Lords from vying for legitimate acting jobs. She landed a gig in mainstream acting in the 1988 cult classic “Cry-baby.” She went on to appear in many TV and film roles.

Lionel Messi News: Soccer Star Is the Subject of a New Apple TV+ Docuseries

Messi, now playing for Inter Miami CF of the MLS, helped his home country win soccer’s biggest event for the first time since 1986, scoring two goals in the final and leading Argentina to a 4-2 win over Kylian Mbappé and France on penalties. Argentina’s captain was also named the tournament MVP.

The new series follows up Messi Meets America , Apple’s 2023 look at the star striker’s arrival and first season in the MLS. Inter Miami begins the 2024 regular season also on February 21 with a match against Real Salt Lake.

Lionel Messi is an Argentinian soccer player who has played for FC Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and currently, the MLS club Inter Miami CF as well as the Argentina national team. As a teenager, Messi moved from Argentina to Spain after FC Barcelona agreed to pay for medical treatments related to his growth hormone disorder. At the club, he earned renown as one of the greatest players in history, helping FC Barcelona win more than two dozen league titles and tournaments. In 2012, he set a record for most goals in a calendar year and, a decade later, helped the Argentina national team win its third FIFA World Cup. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner moved to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021, and in July 2023, he joined Inter Miami.

FULL NAME: Luis Lionel Andres Messi BORN: June 24, 1987 BIRTHPLACE: Rosario, Argentina SPOUSE: Antonella Roccuzzo (2017-present) CHILDREN: Thiago, Mateo, and Ciro ASTROLOGICAL SIGN: Cancer

Luis Lionel Andres “Leo” Messi was born on June 24, 1987, in Rosario, Argentina. As a young boy, Messi tagged along when his two older brothers played soccer with their friends, unintimidated by the bigger boys. At the age of 8, he was recruited to join the youth system of Newell’s Old Boys, a Rosario-based club.

Recognizably smaller than most of the kids in his age group, Messi was eventually diagnosed by doctors as suffering from a hormone deficiency that restricted his growth. Messi’s parents, Jorge and Ceclia, decided on a regimen of nightly growth-hormone injections for their son, though it soon proved impossible to pay several hundred dollars per month for the medication.

So, at the age of 13, when Messi was offered the chance to train at soccer powerhouse FC Barcelona’s youth academy, La Masia, and have his medical bills covered by the team, Messi’s family picked up and moved across the Atlantic to make a new home in Spain. Although he was often homesick in his new country, Messi moved quickly through the junior system ranks.

Ultimately, Messi’s short stature—5 feet, 7 inches—combined with his speed and relentless attacking style, has drawn comparisons to another famous Argentinian footballer, Diego Maradona .

Messi played for FC Barcelona for 17 seasons before joining Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 for two seasons. In July 2023, he joined the MLS club Inter Miami.

FC Barcelona

At age 13, Messi signed with FC Barcelona. His first appearance for the team was when he was 16. On May 1, 2005, Messi put himself in the record books as the youngest player to ever score a goal for the franchise.

Messi steered Barcelona to a wealth of success, most notably in 2009, when the left-footer’s team captured the Champions League, La Liga, and Spanish Super Cup titles. That same year, after two consecutive runner-up finishes, he took home his first FIFA World Player of the Year honor, as well as his first Ballon d’Or award, the top European individual honor in football.

Messi became the first Argentinian player to win the Ballon d’Or. Even the great Maradona gushed about his fellow countryman. “I see him as very similar to me,” the retired player told the BBC. “He’s a leader and is offering lessons in beautiful football. He has something different than any other player in the world.”

Amazingly, the soccer wizard continued to improve, discovering new ways to elude defenders while leading Barcelona to La Liga and Spanish Super Cup championships in 2010 and 2011, as well as the ’11 Champions League title.

Messi embarked on an all-out assault on the record books in 2012. He became the first player to score five goals in a Champions League match in early March, and a few weeks later, he surpassed Cesar Rodriguez’s club-record 232 goals to become Barcelona’s all-time leading scorer. By the end of the year, Messi had accumulated an astounding 91 goals in club and international play, eclipsing the 85 netted in a single calendar year by Gerd Muller in 1972. Fittingly, he broke another record when he was named the Ballon d’Or winner for the fourth consecutive time.

In 2013, the soccer great came back to earth somewhat due to the persistence of hamstring injuries, but he regained his record-breaking form by becoming the all-time leading scorer in La Liga and Champions League play in late 2014.

After helping Barcelona achieve a historic second treble in 2015, he was honored with his fifth Ballon d’Or trophy. Four years later, following another La Liga title, Messi again established a new standard for excellence by claiming his sixth Ballon d’Or.

On August 5, 2021, FC Barcelona announced it couldn’t resign Messi due to the team’s budget constraints and La Liga restrictions. Despite having voiced his desire to leave the club the prior season, Messi bid a teary farewell after 17 seasons: “This is really difficult for me after so many years spent here, being here my entire life. I’m not ready for this.”

Paris Saint-Germain

Four days after the shocking news from FC Barcelona, Messi signed with Paris Saint-Germain. The 34-year-old inked a two-year contract with the French club. The move saw him reunite with former teammate Neymar as well as the talented Kylian Mbappé.

Messi made his debut for the club on August 29, 2021, and scored his first goal that September. PSG won two Ligue 1 titles with Messi but twice failed to advance beyond the round of 16 in the Champions League finals.

Although his contract allowed for an optional third year at PSG, the team announced it would release Messi as a free agent when the deal expired on June 30, 2023. Earlier in the year, the club suspended and fined Messi after he visited Saudi Arabia on an unauthorized trip. This all but sealed fate on the soccer legend’s widely expected move.

Messi’s last game for PSG was June 3, 2023. In total, he started in 72 games, notching 32 goals and 34 assists.

Inter Miami CF

On June 7, 2023, Messi told two Spanish media outlets he planned to play for the MLS club Inter Miami CF, which is partially owned by former soccer player David Beckham . “I have made the decision that I am going to Miami,” Messi said at the time, per ESPN . Messi later told Time he strongly considered joining a Saudi Arabian team before deciding on Inter Miami.

A little over a month later, on July 16, the team officially welcomed him on a 2.5-year contract that runs through the 2025 season. The deal was reportedly worth around $150 million , including an annual salary between $50 million and $60 million , a signing bonus, revenue sharing with the league’s media partner, and team equity upon retirement.

Inter Miami immediately benefitted on and off the field from their new team captain’s presence. The club went on a 12-match winning streak and captured the Leagues Cup, an annual tournament between teams from the MLS and Liga MX. Messi wound up scoring 11 goals in 14 games overall. However, with Messi injured late in the season, Inter Miami went winless in seven straight and failed to qualify for the playoffs. He was named the club’s 2023 MVP in November.

Messi has directly boosted revenue for the team, as well. Attendance at home games spiked 40 percent , the most in the MLS. According to The Athletic , the least expensive Inter Miami season ticket prices rose from $485 to $884 per seat from 2023 to 2024. Even with the price jump, Inter Miami announced 2024 season tickets sold out at the end of November, two months out of the start of the preseason. Not surprisingly, his jersey became the top seller in the MLS .

Messi and Inter Miami open the 2024 MLS regular season on February 21.

In summer 2005, Messi quickly made a name for himself on his native country’s under-20 squad. He led Argentina to the title in the FIFA U-20 World Cup, scoring on a pair of penalty kicks to propel the team over Nigeria. Less than two months later, he made his pro debut with Argentina in an August friendly match against Hungary but played less than two minutes before receiving a red card and being ejected from the game.

For all his success with Barcelona, Messi repeatedly came under fire for his inability to help Argentina’s national team win a major title. In the 2014 World Cup, Argentina lost to Germany in the final, though Messi was named player of the tournament that year. In 2016, following Argentina’s second consecutive loss to Chile in the final of the Copa America tournament, Messi announced he was ending his run with the national team.

The soccer great eventually reversed his decision, but his participation in the 2018 World Cup did not bring that elusive title, as hoped. After Messi scored an early goal in a 2-1 win over Nigeria that helped his team advance from the group stage, he was largely kept in check by France, his two assists not enough to stave off a 4-3 defeat that sent Argentina packing.

The following year, after Messi heavily criticized the referees in the wake of a 2-0 loss to Brazil in the Copa America semifinals, the Argentine captain was slapped with a three-game ban by the South American Football Confederation.

At last, in 2021 and 2022, Argentina and Messi found enough traction to bring home trophies that had long evaded them. First, the team won the Copa America—Argentina’s first major title in 28 years—in August 2021, besting Brazil in the final. Captain Messi tied for top goal scorer, alongside Colombia’s Luis Diaz, and was named player of the tournament. The next year, greater glory awaited at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Argentina captured the World Cup trophy on December 18, 2022, after a thrilling game against France that ended in a penalty shootout. Messi was named the Best FIFA Men’s Player for a second time and broke the record for most World Cup appearances with 26 games. Six jerseys that Messi had worn during the victorious championship run later sold for more than $7.8 million at auction.

In fall 2023, Messi scored three goals in qualifying games for the 2026 World Cup. However, as he nears the twilight of the his career, the soccer legend has adopted a realistic attitude about his future. “As long as I feel that I am fine and I can continue contributing, I am going to do it. Today, the only thing I think about is getting to the Copa America well and being able to compete in it,” Messi said of the 2024 tournament. “Then time will tell if I am [at the World Cup] or not. I’m going to be at an age (39) that normally doesn’t allow me to play in the World Cup.”

Messi won FIFA’s World Player Trophy five times, including four consecutive wins between 2009 and 2012, and has collected its contemporary the Best FIFA Men’s Player three times, in 2019, 2022, and 2023.

The soccer legend has won Europe’s Ballon d’Or a record eight times. When he won the Ballon d’Or in October 2023, Messi became the first active MLS player to do so. He’s also won the European Golden Shoe for top scorer six times, two more than his nearest rival, Cristiano Ronaldo .

In 2023, Time magazine named Messi its Athlete of the Year, pointing to his remarkable impact on soccer’s growing popularity in the United States.

In July 2016, Messi suffered a blow off the soccer field when a Barcelona court found him and his father guilty of three counts of tax fraud. During a four-day trial, Messi and his father denied breaking the law and claimed they were unaware of any tax illegalities they had committed.

However, they were both sentenced to 21 months in prison. Under Spanish law, first offenses under two years are suspended so they did not go to jail, but Messi was ordered to pay a fine of 2 million euros. His father was required to pay 1.5 million euros.

On June 30, 2017, Messi married Antonella Roccuzzo, his longtime girlfriend and the cousin of his best friend and fellow soccer player Lucas Scaglia. Messi met Roccuzzo in their hometown of Rosario when he was 5 years old. Their marriage, a civil ceremony dubbed by Argentina’s Clarín newspaper as the “wedding of the century,” was held at a luxury hotel in Rosario, with a number of fellow star soccer players and Colombian pop star Shakira on the 260-person guest list.

Messi and Roccuzzo have three children together: Thiago, born in November 2012; Mateo, born in September 2015; and Ciro, born in March 2018.

Although famously private off the field, Messi has quietly helped others in need. In 2007, he formed the Leo Messi Foundation to provide opportunities for disadvantaged youths. In early 2010, UNICEF named him a goodwill ambassador, with a focus on fighting for children’s rights across the globe.

  • Whether it’s a friendly match, or for points, or a final, or any game—I play the same. I’m always trying to be my best, first for my team, for myself, for the fans and to try and win.
  • I am competitive, and I feel bad when we lose. You can see it in me when we’ve lost. I’m in a bad way. I don’t like to talk to anyone.
  • I made sacrifices by leaving Argentina, leaving my family to start a new life. I changed my friends, my people. Everything. But everything I did, I did for football, to achieve my dream.
  • I have fun like a child in the street. When the day comes when I’m not enjoying it, I will leave football.
  • I’ve never stopped being Argentine, and I’ve never wanted to. I feel very proud of being Argentine, even though I left there. I’ve been clear about this since I was very young, and I never wanted to change.
  • Something deep in my character allows me to take the hits and get on with trying to win. I’ve always had this ability to get up and get on with it.

Iranian hip hop star sentenced to death

Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi has been sentenced to death.

An Iranian revolutionary court sentenced the well-known hip hop star today (April 24) for charges linked to Iran’s 2022-23 unrest, his lawyer told the Iranian newspaper Sharq.

Salehi was initially arrested in October 2022 after voicing support for the nationwide Woman, Life, Freedom protests.

Salehi showed solidarity for the months-long protests in his songs, which were sparked by the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman arrested for allegedly wearing an ‘improper’ hijab.

He released songs criticising the government, demanding more rights for women in Iran.

He also posted pictures and videos of himself during the demonstrations.

Salehi was then first arrested in October 2022 as a result of the public statements.

He was sentenced in July 2023 to six years and three months in prison for ‘corruption on Earth’.

Salehi previously avoided a death sentence due to a Supreme Court ruling.

He was released on bail on November 18, 2023, after the Supreme Court, responding to an appeal, found ‘flaws in the original sentence.’

His case was returned to a lower court for reexamination and possible retrial.

However, less than two weeks later, the musician was sent back to hail, facing new charges after publicly discussing his torture in prison in a video.

‘Branch One of the Revolutionary Court of (the central city of) Isfahan in an unprecedented move, did not enforce the Supreme Court’s ruling… and sentenced Salehi to the harshest punishment,’ his lawyer Amir Raisian told Sharq on Wednesday.

The Iranian judiciary has not confirmed the sentence yet.

Salehi has 20 days to appeal the ruling.

‘We will definitely appeal this verdict,’ his lawyer confirmed.

The initial accusations against Salehi included spreading ‘lies on the internet’ and ‘propaganda against the state’, as well as inciting people to violence and ‘having formed and managed illegal groups with the aim of disrupting security in cooperation with a government hostile’ to Iran.

Mehdi Yarrahi, another singer who supported the movement and criticised the mandatory dress rules for women, was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.

Following months of unrest after Amini’s death on September 16, 2022, hundreds of people were killed including dozens of security personnel.

Thousands more were arrested for speaking out after Iranian officials labelled the protests ‘riots’.

Nine men have been executed in protest-related cases thus far, involving killings and other violence against security forces.

NBA investigating Game 2 altercation between Nuggets star Nikola Jokic's brother and a fan

biography star video

The NBA is looking into an altercation between Nuggets star Nikola Jokic's brother and a fan that occurred Monday at Ball Arena, the league confirmed to USA TODAY Sports.

Footage shared by TikTok user @cgallegos67 appears to show the eldest Jokic brother, Strahinja Jokic , who was donning a No. 15 Jokic jersey, climb over a rail to confront a fan. The exchange quickly turned to blows as Strahinja Jokic punched the fan in the face as brother Nemanja Jokic followed behind. The TikTok user captioned the video: "Jokic brothers going wild."

The footage emerged after Denver's 101-99 Game 2 win over the Los Angeles Lakers, which saw the Nuggets overcome a 20-point deficit to take a 2-0 lead over LeBron James and the Lakers in the first-round series .

The video also caught the attention of Denver Police, which is investigating the incident, although a victim has not come forward yet.

"The Denver Police Department is aware of the video circulating on social media... The incident was not reported to Denver Police at the arena or after the game was over, and at this time, no one has come forward as a victim of this incident," DPD said in a statement to USA TODAY Sports. "The Department is looking into this incident, is actively working to identify the person in the video who was struck, and encourages anyone who was involved or witnessed this firsthand to contact the Denver Police Department."

All things Nuggets: Latest Denver Nuggets news, schedule, roster, stats, injury updates and more.

Jokic brothers have had multiple dust-ups

This is not the first off-court altercation that has involved the Jokic siblings. When Nikola Jokic was involved in a dust-up with the Phoenix Suns' Devin Booker during the 2021 Western Conference semifinals, Strahinja Jokic and Nemanja Jokic were visibly upset in the stands and had to be held back from the court.

In November 2021, after Nikola Jokic and Miami’s Markieff Morris were involved in an on-court scuffle that resulted in a one-game suspension for the youngest Jokic brother, Strahinja Jokic and Nemanja Jokic took the beef to Twitter.

In response to a tweet from Marcus Morris, brother of Markieff Morris – “Waited till bro turned his back smh. NOTED.”– the Jokic brothers opened the twitter account @JokicBrothers and responded: “You should leave this the way it is instead of publicly threatening our brother! Your brother made a dirty play first. If you want to make a step further be sure we will be waiting for you!! Jokic Brothers.”

Steelers Best Shot to Land Star is Center

The Pittsburgh Steelers' best shot to land a star is at one position.

  • Author: Noah Strackbein
  • Publish date: Apr 24, 2024

In this story:

PITTSBURGH -- If the Pittsburgh Steelers want a near-sure thing in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, they'll take a center. At least that's what the analytics say.

EPSN's Paul Hembo recently posted a list of stats from the first round of the NFL Draft, showcasing what positions have the best percentage of making it in the league compared to what positions are more likely to be a bust. And at the top of the list with the least bust percentage is Pittsburgh's biggest need - a center.

ESPN content producer @PaulHembo calculated the percentage of 1st-round picks that “hit” or “miss,” based upon whether that player signed a second contract with the team that drafted them.   The data encompasses the 20 drafts spanning 2000-2019. Here are the positional hit rates: pic.twitter.com/mSannLz6OC — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) April 24, 2024

Of every position drafted in the first round from 2000-2019, the center position has had just one miss. That being said, they've had just 12 total selections compared to positions like edge rusher (104) and wide receiver (77). Still, center carries a 92% hit rate in Round 1.

The Steelers could highlight three options at the position with the 20th pick. Oregon's Jackson Powers-Johnson and Duke's Graham Barton are seemingly the top two names in the draft class, but West Virginia's Zach Frazier is climbing boards and could find himself making his way into the first round as well.

The Steelers will also be looking at offensive tackle, cornerbacks and wide receivers early in the NFL Draft. Of the group, tackle has the highest hit percentage with 59%, trailing just center. Of 64 players selected, 38 have worked out.
