Singapore , city-state located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula , about 85 miles (137 kilometres) north of the Equator . It consists of the diamond-shaped Singapore Island and some 60 small islets; the main island occupies all but about 18 square miles of this combined area. The main island is separated from Peninsular Malaysia to the north by Johor Strait , a narrow channel crossed by a road and rail causeway that is more than half a mile long. The southern limits of the state run through Singapore Strait , where outliers of the Riau-Lingga Archipelago—which forms a part of Indonesia —extend to within 10 miles of the main island.

Singapore is the largest port in Southeast Asia and one of the busiest in the world. It owes its growth and prosperity to its focal position at the southern extremity of the Malay Peninsula, where it dominates the Strait of Malacca , which connects the Indian Ocean to the South China Sea . Once a British colony and now a member of the Commonwealth , Singapore first joined the Federation of Malaysia on its formation in 1963 but seceded to become an independent state on August 9, 1965.

Recent News

Nearly two-thirds of the main island is less than 50 feet (15 metres) above sea level . Timah Hill, the highest summit, has an elevation of only 531 feet (162 metres); with other peaks, such as Panjang and Mandai hills, it forms a block of rugged terrain in the centre of the island. To the west and south are lower scarps with marked northwest-southeast trends, such as Mount Faber. The eastern part of the island is a low plateau cut by erosion into an intricate pattern of hills and valleys. These physical units reflect their geologic foundations: the central hills are formed from granite rocks, the scarp lands from highly folded and faulted sedimentary rocks, and the eastern plateau from uncompacted sands and gravels.

A dense network of short streams drains the island, but floods are locally severe because the streams have low gradients and because of excessive water runoff from cleared land. Many streams, especially those draining northward, have broad mangrove-fringed estuaries that extend far inland. None of the soils is even reasonably fertile, but those derived from the granites tend to be better than most. Soils developed from the sedimentary rocks are variable, but many contain hardpans (compacted layers) that restrict plant roots and impede soil drainage. The soils of eastern Singapore are extremely infertile. All have suffered extensive degradation through erosion as a result of generations of careless human exploitation.

Singapore is in the equatorial monsoon region of Southeast Asia, and its climate is characterized by uniformly high temperatures and nearly constant precipitation throughout the year. The average monthly temperature varies from about 81° F (27° C) in June to 77° F (25° C) in January. The daily range is somewhat greater, averaging about 13° F (7° C). Singapore’s maritime location and constant humidity, however, keep maximum temperatures relatively moderate: the highest temperature ever recorded was only 97° F (36° C).

The seasons are defined by the relative incidence of rainfall, which, in turn, is determined by the movements of the monsoon air masses. The wettest and windiest period is during the northeast monsoon (November–March), with rainfall reaching an average monthly high of more than 10 inches (250 millimetres) in December. Conversely , the period of the least amount of rainfall and the lightest winds is during the southwest monsoon (May–September), with rainfall dropping to a monthly low of less than 7 inches in July. April and October are intermonsoonal periods characterized by sluggish air movements and intense afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Altogether, Singapore’s precipitation averages about 95 inches annually, and rain falls somewhere on the island every day of the year.

Little remains of the original vegetation or animal life, except for a few thousand acres of evergreen rain forest preserved around catchment areas. Some mangrove vegetation survives in the Kranji area on the northwest side of the island, but elsewhere tracts of scrub or cogon grass (called lalang locally) are common. Many exotic plants have been introduced for ornamental use. The largest native animals are the long-tailed macaque (an Asian species of monkey), the slow loris (a large-eyed tailless nocturnal lemur), and the scaly anteater . Birds are numerous, especially those like the Indian mynah bird, the brahminy kite (a kite with reddish brown plumage and a white head and breast), and the house swallow that have adapted to a symbiotic relationship with humans. Reptiles, such as cobras and lizards, also are common. Fringing coral reefs with their associated fish and wildlife occur around many parts of the coast.

The city of Singapore is situated in the southern portion of the main island. Over time, urbanization has blurred the differences between city and country . Built-up areas now cover a large part of the city-state. The older parts of the city have been substantially refurbished, especially along the Singapore River but elsewhere as well. The once-common Chinese shop-house, consisting of living quarters above a commercial establishment, gradually has been disappearing from the city. Instead, the government’s Housing and Development Board (HDB) has relocated commerce into separate districts and has created integrated residential communities inhabited by people with a mixture of incomes. About four-fifths of Singapore’s population now resides in high-rise HDB flats located in housing estates and new towns. The new towns—such as Woodlands, Tampines, and Yishun—are scattered across the island and are characterized by easy access to places of employment and shopping districts. The traditional Malay kampong settlements—consisting of stilt houses built along the shoreline—are declining in number and are now found only in select rural areas.

Capital Tower The Capital Tower is the fourth tallest skyscraper in the city of Singapore, reaching a height of 254 meters. Formally planned as the POSBank's headquarters building, it was transferred to the ownership of Capita Land. It became the company's flagship building and was then named after the company. Singapore Flag The national flag of Singapore was first adopted in 1959, the year Singapore became self-governing within the British Empire. It became the national flag upon the Republic's full independence on 9 August 1965. The design is a horizontal bicolour of red above white, charged in the canton by a white crescent moon facing, toward the fly, a pentagon of five small white five-pointed stars. The elements of the flag denote a young nation on the ascendant, universal brotherhood and equality, and various national ideals. The national flag is not used as an ensign by vessels at sea. Singapore, 6 July 2024 – The Team Singapore contingents for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games respectively gathered at the official Flag Presentation Ceremony this morning to mark the final lap of their journey towards the pinnacle of sport.

During the ceremony held at the National Youth Sports Institute, Team Singapore sailor Ryan Lo and sprinter Shanti Pereira were unveiled as the flag bearers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, while para swimmer Toh Wei Soong was revealed as the flag bearer for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

Guests-of-honour Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations, and President of the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC), and Mr Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth and Second Minister for Law, presented the Singapore flags to the Chefs de Mission for the respective Games. Para shooter Chan Han Siong was the pledge taker at the official Flag Presentation Ceremony today.

Paris 2024 Olympic Games

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which features a total of 45 sports, will take place from 26 July to 11 August 2024. As at 6 July 2024, 22 athletes across 11 sports will represent Singapore. Golfer Shannon Tan most recently made history by being the first Singaporean in her sport to compete at the quadrennial event.

Mr Tan Wearn Haw, Chef de Mission for Team Singapore at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games said, "Our Paris bound athletes have worked hard, and earned their place amongst the world's best. They represent the best of Singapore, and I am sure they will represent us well. They continue a strong legacy of Singapore Olympians and I am sure they will bring us to greater heights."

Team Singapore sailor and flag bearer for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Ryan Lo, who is going for his second Olympic Games campaign, said, “It is a great honour to be given this opportunity to be a flag bearer together with Shanti for Singapore. It gives me an immense feeling of pride and also gratitude to be able to represent Singapore on one of sporting biggest stages. I am looking forward to embracing the challenge of the Paris Olympics while soaking in the experience of this unique event.”

Team Singapore sprinter and flag bearer or the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Shanti Pereira, who is also going for her second Olympic Games, said, “I am extremely honoured to be carrying the Singapore flag at the opening ceremony in Paris. The Olympics is the biggest stage for us and I’m proud to be leading my fellow team Singapore athletes at the opening ceremony, signifying the start of what will be a very special time for all of us.”

Paris 2024 Paralympic Games

Hot on the heels of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will feature 22 sports from 28 August to 8 September 2024. As at 6 July 2024, nine Team Singapore athletes will compete in five sports, namely boccia, para archery, para equestrian, para swimming, and shooting para sport.

Ms Ng Wee Chew, Chef de Mission for Team Singapore at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games said, “We are immensely proud of our athletes who have qualified for the games, and hopefully a few more are able to make the cut. To compete at the Games is the ultimate goal for many athletes. Their efforts, dedication and perseverance have made this a reality and is an example for all that big dreams can be realised. I am honoured to be given this opportunity to lead our contingent in the Paris games. Let's rally behind our athletes and cheer them on!"

Team Singapore para swimmer and flag bearer for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, Toh Wei Soong, who will be making his second appearance at the Games, said, “I am honoured to be the flag bearer for the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. It will be the first time in my 11-year career as a national athlete to do so at a Paralympic Games and I consider it an outstanding moment in my life. We (myself and other athletes) hope to do Singapore proud and to raise this nation’s flag at the Games in August. I want to thank the team behind the team and the effort behind the effort, including the officials, the coaches, the families and the friends, for being part of our lives and supporting us to make this journey happen.”

SINGAPORE: Swimmer Gan Ching Hwee is set to replace Quah Ting Wen in the women’s 4x100m medley relay at the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Quah’s name was missing from the 22-athlete list at the Team Singapore flag presentation ceremony on Saturday (Jul 6), while Gan’s name was included.

Swimming governing body World Aquatics had offered Gan an invitation to participate in the women’s 1,500m event based on her Olympic consideration time – or Olympic “B” cut – of 16:10.61 clocked earlier this month.

Swimmers automatically qualify for the Games if they meet the Olympic qualifying time, or “A” cut, and may be invited to compete if they meet the “B” cut.

World Aquatics had previously granted Singapore an exemption to allow three relay-only swimmers to compete instead of the maximum of two.

For the Singapore team, only Letitia Sim had met the Olympic qualifying time in the 100m breaststroke.

World Aquatics offered Singapore the choice between sending Quah or Gan, who is also entitled to compete in up to two individual events. 

Quah has appealed the decision.

In response to CNA's query, Singapore Aquatics said Gan has accepted the chance to compete in Paris.

It also confirmed that Quah has lodged an appeal, which will be heard by the association's appeals committee on Jul 7.

Singapore Aquatics said that “in the best interest of the team”, it will continue to appeal to World Aquatics for both swimmers to compete at the 2024 Olympics.

Further updates will be given after the appeal processes are complete, it added.

The Singapore women's 4x100m medley team set a new national record en route to qualifying for the Paris Olympics.

Earlier this year, Quah, her sister Quah Jing Wen, Letitia Sim and Levenia Sim clocked a time of 4m 2.88s to eclipse the previous national record (4m 6.97s) set by the Quah sisters, Letitia Sim and Faith Khoo.

Unlike the individual events, there are no Olympic "A" cut times for relay qualification for the Games.

The top three teams at last year's World Aquatics Championships made the cut for Paris, while the next 13 countries with the next fastest times from both this year's and last year's World Aquatics Championships also qualify.

QUAH'S RESPONSE

Quah told CNA she was “frustrated” and “disappointed.” She explained that she had previously received confirmation of her place on the team, having signed a written invitation from Singapore Aquatics just two days ago on Jul 4.

CNA has seen the document, which indicated that Quah had been nominated for the freestyle leg of the 4x100m medley relay.

“After two years of being told by the coaches the importance of qualifying a relay for Team Singapore, training day in and out for that event and position, and after we actually did our jobs to qualify the team for Paris; to now be replaced by a last-minute addition to the team is not only confusing, but also disappointing,” said the swimmer.

The upcoming Paris Olympics would have been Quah’s fourth and she said that she had made making the relay team a priority.

For the quartet to have qualified for the Games was an “incredible” feat, Quah said.

“But to now know that I qualified (for) that relay and we are not sending our best team there really contradicts everything we've been told and taught,” she added.

“I earned my spot on the relay and on the team, and to now be made to feel like my position is less prioritised, it indeed goes against the spirit of the Games, both in merit and principles.”

FLAG PRESENTATION CEREMONY

The Team Singapore contingents for the Olympic and Paralympic Games gathered at the official flag presentation ceremony at the National Youth Sports Institute on Saturday morning.

Sailor Ryan Lo and sprinter Shanti Pereira were unveiled as the flag bearers for the Olympic Games, while swimmer Toh Wei Soong was revealed as the flag bearer for the Paralympic Games.

President of the Singapore National Olympic Council Grace Fu and Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong presented the Singapore flags to the chefs de mission for the Games.

This year's Olympics will take place from Jul 26 to Aug 11. As of Saturday, 22 athletes across 11 sports will represent Singapore. 

The Paralympics will be held from Aug 28 to Sep 8. As of Saturday, nine Singapore athletes will compete in five sports.
