What Matters Most: Your Skills & Work History

Your resume skills and work experience

Your whole “thing” is conducting in-depth analysis of success indicators for the business you work for, and then applying those learnings: “How well are the current operations performing, and how can I improve the strategy?” Recruiters want to see that you have the niche skills required to make this happen.

General abilities like “communication” and “computer skills” should be a given for a pro like you, and nothing that vague should go on your resume skills section ! It’s time to get specific.

Go beyond interpersonal skills to clarify how you apply them within your role. List programs, strategic elements, and software tools by name.

Here’s what we mean:

9 Best Operations Analyst Skills

  • Google Sheets
  • Time Management
  • Statistical Analysis

Sample operations analyst work experience bullet points

Those skills make an excellent introduction, but recruiters want to dive into the next chapter of your story: How do you utilize those skills to their fullest potential? How have you applied your analytical, detail-oriented mindset on the job to exceed expectations?

You can get some inspiration from our sample resumes , but basically, you’ll want to share what you did, why you did it, how you did it, and how it helped . In other words: How did you create success, and how does that success leave a measurable, positive impact within your field?

That’s right: Measurable impact! You never want to turn in a resume without quantifiable data that shows what a difference you can make. Recruiters need solid metrics for your experience and accomplishments.

Here are some examples:

  • Implemented cross-functional, cross-regional design and implementation of 31+ strategic end-to-end supply chain capability enhancements, boosting revenue by 16%
  • Established strategies for service improvements and executed performance with 98% accuracy in reporting
  • Owned 90% of the Incident, Request, Change, and Escalation processes related to Core Ops support, ensuring customer satisfaction ratings of 87% or higher on average
  • Ensured all systems, methodologies, and procedures were followed with a 0.5% error rate, reducing unnecessary manual labor by 12 hours per month

Top 5 Tips for Your Operations Analyst Resume

  • Whenever you can do so in your experience section, try to name specific tools, such as Tableau or SQL, that you used to work your magic. You don’t have to give away all your secrets, but recruiters need at least a glimpse of how you use tech to get things done.
  • Place a special emphasis on the experience points you’d be most comfortable discussing in an interview. If you’ve got a proven track record of implementing successful changes or you shine when training employees on new procedures, spend a lot of your time there. That way, recruiters will be more likely to give you a chance to expound upon your strongest points in an interview.
  • Results and success metrics are the core of your role as an operations analyst since they play against one another in the business’ perpetual learning cycle. Whenever you can, provide metrics that can scale over time, such as growth percentages or reduced labor hours.
  • We know: It can be tempting to pack as much info as possible into every bullet point. But make sure you avoid dragging on! Keep each achievement as concise as possible to pack the best punch, and save further details for your BA cover letter .
  • Ensure that your resume’s readability is top-notch. Your resume format will work best when it’s organized in reverse-chronological order. This keeps your most recent operations analyst position at the top, so hiring managers can see relevant experience and increased responsibility from you.

How to Write an Operations Analyst Resume

Job seeker communicates with recruiter via emails and text messages

If you were to perform cost analysis on production processes, you’d want to present your recommendations in an easily understandable format. The same is true for operations analyst resumes. Choose an organized template that’s well-spaced, uses bullet points, and has easily readable 12-14 point fonts.

Operations analysts handle a lot behind the scenes to make data-based recommendations. Therefore, focusing on technical skills like using Lucidchart and performing statistical analysis is important to show how you achieve great results.

You should use your analytical skills to optimize your resume with metrics-based bullet points that show data from your achievements that will be important to businesses. For instance, you could explain how you improved shipping routes to get products processed and delivered 45% faster.

When you’re reviewing the numbers, it’ll be important that you perform accurately to ensure all the process improvement measures you implement are successful. Show that accuracy right away by submitting a resume free of grammatical errors.

Do you want to emphasize the impact that skills like using AirTable will have? Using an active voice will help. To start, use action words like “organized” or “presented.” Then, you can put it all together by saying how you “organized pricing data in AirTable to help marketing team members make 36% more effective pricing decisions.”

Versatility is important for any strategic thinker—and especially for an operations analyst. Show that you have a broad scope of capabilities by pulling in a versatile array of experience points.

You want to come across as both approachable and professional, just as you do on the job helping employees get up to speed or proving the effectiveness of a process change. And the balance between approachable and professional should be based on the job description’s tone, so go back and reread it for good measure!

Writing tone isn’t the only thing the job description is suitable for! Skim it for keywords, such as “experience in Lucidchart,” company values or lingo, and anything else that stands out that you can reflect in your resume.

Upload your resume now for an unbiased assessment. Our tool will evaluate key elements that hiring managers look for, helping you create a resume that gets noticed in the competitive operations field.

Positioning the education section

The placement of your education information directly depends on where you are in your career journey. For an operations analyst role, if you are a recent graduate or an entry-level candidate, ensure your education details are placed before your experience. This precedent shows a recent focus on learning, crucial for an analyst role.

However, if you are a seasoned professional, your experience becomes the forefront of your resume. The education, though still vital, should come after to stress on your practical experiences. But remember to bring it to the forefront if you have recently engaged in further education like a master's or a bootcamp.

Highlight analytical tools proficiency

As an operations analyst, showing you're skilled with specific analytical tools can set you apart. Focus on listing the software and systems you're proficient in. For example, if you're good with SQL or a particular business intelligence platform like Tableau, make sure to highlight these. Such tools are crucial for data mining, analysis, and visualization, all key to this role.

Also, if you have certifications in any analytical tools or methodologies, such as Six Sigma or Lean principles, mention these. They show commitment to the field and can be a strong selling point. Remember, a hiring manager looks for evidence you can handle the technical aspects of operations analysis with ease.

Operations Assistant Resume Sample

Keeping an ideal resume length.

The length of your resume is often reflective of your professional stature. If you're a mid-level hire, aim for a one-page resume. It's concise and presents your relevant experience for an operations analyst role minutely.

Senior-level candidates or those with over a decade of experience should go for a two-page resume. These give more room for detailing, highlighting different projects, roles, and impacts made. If struggling to keep it short, a layout change or removing older, less relevant points can help manage space.

Operations Strategist Resume Sample

Showcase skill transferability.

For a smooth employment transition into the operations analyst role, demonstrate transferable skills, particularly those pertaining to problem-solving and critical thinking through real-life project examples.

Even if you have non-analyst experience, a presentation showcasing how your skills can adapt and contribute to an operations analyst role can make your resume stand out. For example, if you've worked in customer service, describe how you used data analysis to improve customer satisfaction metrics.

Senior Operations Analyst Resume Sample

Beat the resume bots.

When you apply for an operations analyst position, your resume might first be read by a computer program. These programs, called Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), filter resumes before a hiring manager sees them. To get past them, you need to know how they work.

Here are ways to make your resume ATS-friendly:

  • Use standard job titles. Instead of 'Ops Wizard,' write 'operations analyst.'
  • Include keywords from the job description. If 'data analysis' is mentioned, make sure it is on your resume.

Remember, an ATS might miss important information if it is in headers or footers, so keep your details in the main body of the document. Make sure your resume is simple and clear so both the ATS and the hiring manager can understand it easily. Good luck!

Operations Analyst with Supply Chain specialization Resume Sample

Tailoring for operations analyst role.

As an aspiring operations analyst, show strong analytical skills and detail orientation in your resume. Highlight any experience where you have used quantitative and qualitative data to reach a conclusion or improve processes. The use of specific figures or percentages can emphasize your contribution greatly.

Keep technology forefront, outlining your experience with specific tools and platforms that increase productivity or spring analytics. Familiarity with analytical software or platforms specific to the industry is a bonus to catch the employer's attention.

Junior Operations Analyst Resume Sample

Ignoring soft skills.

Many people focus on their technical abilities but forget to show their teamwork and problem-solving skills. As an operations analyst, you need both. You must be good at working with others and at solving problems. Make sure to include examples of these skills on your resume.

Another mistake is not being clear about your impact. You should show how your work helped your company. Use numbers to show how much you improved a process or saved money. For example, 'Reduced report generation time by 20% through automation,' tells me you made a big difference.

  • Include teamwork and problem-solving skills.
  • Use numbers to show your impact.

Business Process Optimization Specialist Resume Sample

Make your resume relevant.

To get noticed, make sure your resume speaks directly to the job you want. For an operations analyst role, show skills that fit the job. This helps hiring managers see you're a good match. Start with a clear objective. Then, list experiences that show you can do the job well.

  • Focus on data analysis tools you've used, like SQL or Tableau , to prove you can handle complex data.
  • For a higher position, share how you've led a project or a team. Mention the size of the team and the impact you made.
  • If you're coming from a different career, match your past job skills to analyst tasks. For example, if you've managed budgets before, that’s a key skill for an analyst.

Logistics Performance Analyst Resume Sample

Highlight achievements, not tasks.

As a hiring manager, I often see operation analyst resumes that list job responsibilities instead of showcasing actual achievements. You must move beyond merely stating what you were supposed to do, to demonstrating what you have accomplished.

Here's how you can turn a responsibility into an accomplishment:

  • Before: ‘Responsible for generating weekly reports on operational performance.’
  • After: ‘Improved operational efficiency by 15% through the weekly analysis and optimization of performance metrics.’
  • Before: ‘Managed inventory tracking system.’
  • After: ‘Enhanced inventory accuracy by 20%, reducing waste and saving the company $5,000 annually by overhauling the tracking system.’

Remember, your resume should show how you added value in your role as an operations analyst. Use clear numbers and results to prove your impact.

Process Improvement Analyst in Manufacturing Resume Sample

Use dynamic verbs for impact.

When you're applying for an operations analyst role, it's key to show how you drive results and tackle challenges. Choose verbs that make your contributions clear and direct. This reflects your ability to take action and lead initiatives.

Verbs should reflect your analytical skills and your knack for improving processes. Think about the tasks you've done that relate to analyzing data, enhancing efficiency, and supporting decision-making. Then, pick verbs that best describe these actions.

  • To highlight your analytical prowess, include verbs like examined , interpreted , investigated , quantified , and validated .
  • For showcasing process improvements, use streamlined , optimized , revised , upgraded , and automated .
  • If you've contributed to strategic planning, verbs like formulated , projected , forecasted , devised , and strategized are strong choices.
  • To demonstrate teamwork and collaboration, include coordinated , facilitated , partnered , integrated , and collaborated .
  • Showcase your reporting abilities with verbs like compiled , generated , synthesized , assessed , and reported .

Strategic Operations Analyst in Healthcare Resume Sample

Key skills for operational analysis.

When you craft your resume as an operations analyst, including relevant skills is crucial to show you can handle the job's demands. Here are some of the skills you should consider:

  • Data analysis
  • Process improvement
  • Project management
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Business intelligence
  • Supply chain management
  • Statistical analysis
  • Financial modeling
  • Risk management

Choose skills that match the job you want. For example, if you're aiming for a role with a strong focus on data, highlight your data analysis , SQL , and business intelligence skills. If the job is more about optimizing processes, emphasize your process improvement and project management abilities.

Include these skills in a dedicated section on your resume. This makes it easy for hiring managers to see your qualifications quickly. It also helps with Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) that scan for specific keywords. Remember, you don't need to list every skill, just those that are strong and relevant to the operations analyst role you're targeting.

Senior Operations Consultant Resume Sample

Show leadership and growth.

When you apply for an operations analyst role, showing how you've grown in your career is key. Have you led a team or been promoted? This shows you're ready for more responsibility. Think about times you took the lead or moved up.

  • Managed a team of 4 to streamline inventory tracking, leading to a 20% reduction in errors.
  • Promoted from junior analyst to operations analyst after increasing report efficiency by 30%.

Even if you're not sure, look back at any small team projects you led or tasks where you helped make things better. It's all about showing you can take charge and make a positive impact.

Data-Driven Operations Analyst Resume Sample

Quantify your impact.

As an operations analyst, showing your impact in clear numbers can make your resume stand out. When you share how you've improved processes or saved resources, it's important to be specific. Think about the ways you've made a difference and put a number to it.

Here are some examples of how you can quantify your achievements:

  • Increased efficiency by 15% through streamlining workflow processes.
  • Reduced operational costs by $50,000 annually by renegotiating supplier contracts.
  • Improved customer satisfaction by 20% by analyzing and optimizing support processes.
  • Decreased report generation time by 30% by automating data collection.
  • Identified and eliminated 3 major bottlenecks in the production line.
  • Enhanced data accuracy by 25% with the implementation of a new quality control system.
  • Managed a project that saved the company 200 man-hours per month.
  • Conducted analysis leading to a reduction in customer support issues by 40% .

When you're unsure of exact numbers, estimate the scale of your impact. If you optimized a process, consider the time saved per day and multiply it by the number of working days. For cost savings, think about the expense before and after you made changes. These figures help hiring managers understand the value you could bring to their team. Remember, even estimated numbers should be based on reasonable assessments of your work.

Formatting Tips for an Operations Analyst Resume

When it comes to creating an effective resume, the formatting you use can make a huge impact. As an operations analyst, you want to showcase your skills and experience in the best way possible. Here are some tips for formatting your operations analyst resume.

A. Choosing the Right Layout

Choosing the right layout is crucial when it comes to creating a professional-looking resume. A clean and simple layout will make it easier for the employer to focus on your qualifications. Use headings and bullet points to break up information and make it easier to read.

Consider using a functional or combination resume format, which emphasizes your skills and achievements rather than your work history. This format will allow you to highlight your experience in the field and your ability to handle different tasks effectively.

B. Using Appropriate Font and Font Size

The font you choose should be easy to read and professional-looking. A font like Times New Roman or Arial is a safe choice. You should also choose an appropriate font size, typically between 10-12 points. Avoid using excess font styles or sizes, as they can distract from your content.

C. Proper Use of White Space

White space, or the areas of your resume without text, is important for readability. Use white space to break up sections and make your resume easier to skim. This can also make the document look more aesthetically pleasing.

At the same time, don’t overdo the white space. Too much empty space can make your resume look sparse and incomplete, while too little space can make it cluttered and difficult to read.

D. Including Bulleted Lists

Bulleted lists are a great way to organize information and make it more visually appealing. Use bullet points to highlight key accomplishments, skills, or experience. This can help draw the employer’s attention to important information and make it easier to scan the document.

Be sure to keep your bullet points concise and easy to read. Use action verbs and specific metrics whenever possible. This can help demonstrate your expertise and highlight your achievements.

E. Adding Visual Elements

Visual elements such as icons, graphs, or tables can help make your resume stand out from the competition. These elements can help convey complex data and statistics in a straightforward way.

Be mindful of the visual elements you choose, however. Make sure they are professional-looking and appropriate for the content of your resume. They should also be consistent with the overall design and layout of the document.

Formatting is an essential component when it comes to crafting an effective operations analyst resume. It can help showcase your qualifications and make your application stand out. Keep these tips in mind when building your resume, and you’ll be on your way to landing your dream job.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

When crafting your operations analyst resume, there are common mistakes that you should avoid to give yourself the best chance of landing your dream job. These mistakes can undermine your application, making it unclear or unappealing to hiring managers. Here are some of the most common mistakes and how to avoid them:

A. Using Generalizations

Many candidates fall into the trap of using general statements to describe their skills and experiences. For example, statements like “excellent problem solver” or “great verbal and written communication skills” are broad and uninformative. Hiring managers want to see specific examples of how you have used these skills in real-world situations. To avoid generalizations, provide concrete examples and results that demonstrate your competencies.

B. Failing to Quantify Achievements

Another mistake is failing to quantify your achievements. It’s not enough to say that you increased sales, improved efficiency, or reduced costs. Hiring managers want to see specifics. Provide figures, such as the percentage increase in sales revenue, the percentage reduction in costs, or the amount of time saved. Quantifying your achievements gives credibility to your claims and helps you stand out from other candidates.

C. Including Irrelevant Information

While it’s important to provide information that showcases your skills and experiences, there’s a limit to what should be included on your resume. Avoid including irrelevant information, such as hobbies or personal interests unless they relate to the position you’re applying for. Including too much irrelevant information can distract from your professional qualifications and make it difficult for hiring managers to see your value.

D. Making Spelling and Grammar Mistakes

Even with spell-checkers and grammar-checking tools, proofreading your resume is essential. Spelling and grammar mistakes can undermine your professionalism and attention to detail, two qualities that are highly sought after in operations analyst roles. Before submitting your resume, make sure to proofread it multiple times and have a friend or family member review it as well.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can create a standout operations analyst resume that showcases your unique skills and experiences. Remember, the goal of your resume is to secure an interview, so take the time to make sure it’s error-free and highlights your achievements.

Tips for Optimizing your Operations Analyst Resume for ATS

When it comes to submitting your Operations Analyst resume, understanding how Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) work can give you an extra edge. ATS systems are software programs that filter and rank resumes based on the specific job requirements designated by recruiters or hiring managers. While these systems can help companies quickly streamline the recruitment process, it’s essential to make sure your resume is tailored to the algorithms set by the ATS.

A. Understanding How ATS Works

ATS is programmed with specific criteria and a given set of keywords that are required by recruiters or hiring managers. For Operations Analyst roles, such keywords might include “data analysis,” “project management,” “report generation,” “process improvement,” and so on. Therefore, to pass through the initial phase of the recruitment process, you need to ensure your resume has the necessary keywords that the ATS is looking for.

B. Including Relevant Keywords

To optimize your resume for ATS, you need to identify the critical keywords and phrases related to your profession and the specific Operations Analyst role you are applying for. Make sure to incorporate these keywords into the appropriate sections of your resume, including the summary, experience, education, and skills sections. However, avoid overstuffing your resume with keywords, as it can lead to disqualification or even harm your chances of getting through the ATS.

To get started with relevant keywords, read the job description carefully and note down the key requirements and skills mentioned. This can give you an idea of the relevant keywords that can boost your chances of getting through the ATS.

C. Using ATS-Friendly Formatting

Using an ATS-friendly resume format can increase your chances of passing through the initial ATS screening. Keep your resume simple, easy-to-read, and cleanly formatted. Avoid using charts, graphics or images that cause file-compatibility issues. Use commonly accepted fonts like Arial, Calibri, and Times New Roman.

Make sure to include standard sections such as Summary, Experience, Education, and Skills, in your resume. In the experience section, use bullet points to highlight your accomplishments and include hard numbers and metrics wherever possible. This will help the ATS understand the depth and breadth of your knowledge and expertise in the field.

Optimizing your Operations Analyst resume for ATS requires careful consideration of the software’s algorithms, relevant keywords, and formatting. By targeting and including specific keywords, you can increase the likelihood of getting noticed by the ATS, and subsequently, the recruiter or hiring manager.

Create your professional resume now

Writing a good resume begins with solid organization. That's how our team of professional resume writers begin every project – including for our mythical candidate Jessica's analyst resume. This resume is clean, organized, and flows from start to finish.

It begins with an easy-to-review contact section, an eloquent and engaging professional summary, relevant work history with supporting bullet points of key accomplishments, and other important sections.

As you continue into each section, all entries are easy to review, listed in reverse chronological order, and highlight their unique accomplishments. Now that you have a practical example to reference throughout this article let's provide you with the roadmap that will give you the confidence to write your own experienced or entry level operations analyst resume.

How to Write a Good Resume for Operations Analyst in 2024: Operations Specialist Resume Tips

Let's get right to the point. As we noted above, having strong organizational skills will help you accomplish any task – such as writing a resume. However, it's not imperative to overthink this process. In fact, by simplifying your resume writing outline, you'll have the flexibility to create primary sections, insert supporting data, fine-tune and optimize the content, and format for a seamless reader experience.

We call this document a master resume – as it's going to be the sole source of information you'll need to include in the resume. For starters, you'll need to create a few major sections. Here is what we recommend for an operations analyst position.

Personal Contact Information:  The first item to include on any resume is your correct contact information. The information must match what you've added to your application and noted on the cover letter.

Professional Summary  – The resume overview or professional summary is your opening statement and first opportunity to separate yourself from other candidates.

Work History:  You'll want to add (2) examples of relevant work history where you've served as an operations analyst in a previous position – or showcased the skills and attributes needed to be a successful analyst. We'll explore more in the detailed section below.

Education:  While a resume helps you expand on the information listed on your application, the education you've completed should be straightforward for an operational analyst position. Certifications are typically not required.

References  – It's best to select three contacts – two professional and one personal.

Skills:  The final section of your resume is the skills section. Using a professional resume builder will help you format the skills to appear cleanly on the resume.

Now that you've listed the primary section above on your master resume, bold type them – so you know they are significant areas. You can then continue to each section below to learn how to add the right content.

Section #1 – List Your Contact Information

Here is a quick question to consider. When you apply for a job, what attribute would you think is the most important factor that a hiring manager or recruiting firm seeks? Some would instantly answer that the candidate's job experience would easily be the number one factor. However, the truth might surprise you – its consistency and professionalism are showcased through the resume.

You can eclipse many candidates for the same position by simply paying close attention to the content you add to your resume. This will start with the personal contact information listed on the resume. It's always great to kick off every project with a 'win.' So, here is your first chance to kick off your resume writing project right.

For your personal contact information, list your full legal name, mailing address, email, and mobile phone number. The important item to remember here – is to match 100% what you listed on your application and, if applicable – the cover letter.

For example – if you listed a PO Box as your mailing address on a job application (which we don't recommend unless you're unable to receive mail at your physical location) but listed a physical address on a resume – this is an example of inconsistency – and can be a red flag to hiring managers.

How to Format this Section

The contact information section is simple – and should be easy for the resume reader to review. Unless you've been asked to supply it – don't add any social media contacts or pages on your resume. The formatting for contact information is to list it at the top center of the resume – or upper left-hand corner.

Section #2 – Professional Summary

Your resume writing project will get technical and creative in this section. The professional summary is a 150-to-200-word paragraph that introduces your candidacy, qualifications, and interpersonal skills to make you the ideal candidate for the job. It also provides you with an excellent opportunity to sprinkle some keywords or action verbs that automated software programs use to separate qualified candidates from those who don't have the right skills.

Your professional summary needs to start with your desire to join the company you've applied to. This is another example of attention to detail that today's hiring managers seek in job candidates. Our operations analyst candidate Jessica has done exactly this in the first sentence of her resume summary.

Within the body of the professional summary, you'll want to introduce years of experience, key accomplishments, and details about your work ethic that separates you from competitors. Some of the key action verbs or professional experience soft skills relevant to this section would include strong communication skills, reporting to stakeholders, mathematics, strategic planning, problem-solving, working with development team members, optimization software, analytical thinking, and confidentiality of sensitive information.

Your professional summary resume format is a paragraph of powerful statements introducing yourself to prospective employers. Keep it below 200 words – in fact, 100 to 150 is about right. It would help if you also wrote this – and all content in an operations analyst resume with a professional – yet conversational tone.

Section #3 – Relevant Work History

Work history is important when you have the right type of experience. Every great analyst will possess skills – many of which are taught in college or learned in the work environment. The intent of the work history section of a resume is to explain how the company you listed on the application has helped you develop the necessary skills to review operations, overhead, procedures, risk management, forecasting, and other aspects of a business – and recommend corrective actions to improve the business.

Case in point – let's take a review of Jessica's sample resume. She has listed two previous analyst positions. The first is her current position, serving as security operations center analyst. In the body of that first listing, she has provided four bullet points showcasing her key achievements – which provide validity and support to her analytical experience.

The second position listed is her first, a perfect example for those writing a sales operation analyst resume. While this job was an entry-level position, she received the critical on-the-job training you don't receive in a college classroom. Likewise, she was able to fine-tune her analytical skills, business analysis abilities, decision making, data analysis, and cross-functional abilities that helps her make solid choices.

Jessica's financial operations analyst resume sample gives you a visual of how this section should be written and formatted. Resume writing best practices suggest listing all previous employment in reverse chronological order – or from most recent to former positions. Always list the company's name, the location, and the dates. You should also document a few key bullet points of tasks, duties, or accomplishments.

Section #4 – Education

It's the responsibility of every job applicant to verify the requirements of positions they seek to retain. One of the sections of a job description that is often overlooked is educational requirements. For an operations analyst position, most companies require a minimum of a bachelor's degree in analytics.

The job posting will tell you which level of education is required. However, it's best practice to document your highest level of school completed. This makes it easier for you and gives the hiring manager or recruiter a good idea of your experience vs. education.

Suppose you review Jessica's operations analyst resume example work history section. In that case, you'll notice that she had listed an entry-level analyst position in her second listing. The years of employment aligned with the same year of her graduation. This is important as it shows that she gained valuable hands-on experience before earning her degree. If she held a master’s degree - that would be the one documented on the resume.

The education section of every resume should be kept simple. List the college's name, location, the degree earned, and the date of graduation. Using a resume builder will help you format this section – so it appears clean, neat, and organized.

Section #5 – References

Any job reference is to provide an added testimonial to the information documented on your application, resume, and cover letter. They help to provide credibility and support to your candidacy – specifically, your ability to analyze multiple data points, embrace new systems like Oracle that helps you analyze data, creatively solve problems, and provide clear and open-minded recommendations that will improve the operations of a business.

There are two types of references you should select for an analyst position. The first is a professional reference – or someone you respect that you've worked with – or is a fellow operations analyst. The second would be a personal reference – or a family friend or mentor who speaks to your personality, work ethic, and interpersonal skills.

How to Format This Section

With any professional resume, it's a good idea to select two professional and one personal reference. You can see that our candidate Jessica has done this on her operations analyst resume. List their full name, their employer (or where you connected), and the phrase "available upon request." You don't want to list anyone's contact info for privacy reasons publicly. If the hiring manager wants to speak to your reference, you can provide their information privately.

Section #6 - Skills

We're nearing the end of your resume – and it's another easy one to complete. Knowing what skills to put on a resume for business operations analyst will save you time and take advantage of automated software used by recruiters. The technical skills section on a resume is a series of bullet-pointed keywords or action verbs that articulate the strengths and abilities you possess.

For operational analyst positions, a few of the critical keywords to mention – throughout the resume and/or skills section include time management, critical thinking, analytical processing, attention to detail, communication, problem solving skills, business management, mathematical skills, computer skills, and information technology or cloud-based technology.

Another benefit of using a resume builder is formatting your skills section. You'll notice on our operations analysis resume sample that the skills have been listed at the bottom of the resume. Further, Jessica has assigned a skill level with each – with multiple options to select your ability. You should pick five to seven of your top operations analyst skills.

Related Resume Templates

There are multiple types of business analyst positions available today. While each has a unique specialty and requirements – you can learn quite a bit from other resumes in this industry. We've collected several sample resumes in the operations analyst and other related industries that can help you develop ideas that you can integrate into your resume.

  • Structure the resume as we've recommended – using those primary sections in the order we listed.
  • Make sure your resume has a natural flow and is written with a professional yet conversational tone.
  • Always write your resume on a plain white background with black font. This will ensure your operations analyst resume summary stands out and is easy to read.

  • Ensure its well-spaced, organized, and professional.
  • Finally, read it aloud a few times before you're ready to paste the content into a resume builder or template.

Operations Analyst resume examples for 2024

A successful operations analyst resume should showcase a mix of hard and soft skills. For hard skills, a strong understanding of data analysis, experience with SQL, and project management are key. In terms of soft skills, strong communication skills and a focus on customer service are essential. As Dr. Wayne Durr , Finance Professor at Stonehill College, puts it, "Your resume is like an artist's portfolio. What projects or analysis have you worked on? You cannot articulate the value you will bring to that prospective company without the ability to articulate your skills and capabilities."

3. Next, create an operations analyst skills section on your resume

Your resume's skills section should include the most important keywords from the job description, as long as you actually have those skills. If you haven't started your job search yet, you can look over resumes to get an idea of what skills are the most important.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when writing your resume's skills section:

  • Include 6-12 skills, in bullet point form
  • List mostly hard skills ; soft skills are hard to test
  • Emphasize the skills that are most important for the job

Hard skills are generally more important to hiring managers because they relate to on-the-job knowledge and specific experience with a certain technology or process.

Soft skills are also valuable, as they're highly transferable and make you a great person to work alongside, but they're impossible to prove on a resume.

Example of skills to include on an operations analyst resume

Customer service is the process of offering assistance to all the current and potential customers -- answering questions, fixing problems, and providing excellent service. The main goal of customer service is to build a strong relationship with the customers so that they keep coming back for more business.

Windows is a chain of operating systems that controls a computer and is developed by Microsoft. Every version of Windows consists of GUI (graphical user interface), with a desktop that allows the user to open their files.

Salesforce is an American cloud-based software company based in San Francisco, California. This company provides customer relationship management services that enable the customers to be closer to the company. It gives the company detailed information about each customer, including marketing, sales, commerce, and services. Salesforce also helps market a product to attract more buyers, and helps win more customers by targeting the right audience.

Data entry means entering data into a company's system with the help of a keyboard. A person responsible for entering data may also be asked to verify the authenticity of the data being entered. A person doing data entry must pay great attention to tiny details.

Troubleshooting is the process of analyzing and fixing any kind of problem in a system or a machine. Troubleshooting is the detailed yet quick search in the system for the main source of an issue and solving it.

Top Skills for an Operations Analyst

  • Customer Service , 10.1%
  • Data Analysis , 5.6%
  • Project Management , 5.3%
  • Other Skills , 73.2%

4. List your operations analyst experience

The most important part of any resume for an operations analyst is the experience section. Recruiters and hiring managers expect to see your experience listed in reverse chronological order, meaning that you should begin with your most recent experience and then work backwards.

Don't just list your job duties below each job entry. Instead, make sure most of your bullet points discuss impressive achievements from your past positions. Whenever you can, use numbers to contextualize your accomplishments for the hiring manager reading your resume.

It's okay if you can't include exact percentages or dollar figures. There's a big difference even between saying "Managed a team of operations analysts" and "Managed a team of 6 operations analysts over a 9-month project. "

Most importantly, make sure that the experience you include is relevant to the job you're applying for. Use the job description to ensure that each bullet point on your resume is appropriate and helpful.

Building a application support analyst resume when experience is sparse

If you're light on relevant experience, consider highlighting:

  • Short-term roles or internships undertaken during your academic years.
  • Contractual roles, emphasizing their relevance and the outcomes achieved.
  • Alternative resume formats, such as functional or hybrid, that spotlight your skills.
  • Research roles, especially if they involved significant projects or if your contribution was pivotal to the project's success.
  • Resume Keywords
  • Resume Buzzwords

Remember, the experience section isn't just about traditional roles. It's a space to highlight all professional learning, whether from internships, contract roles, research projects, or other relevant experiences. If it's added value to your skill set for the application support analyst role, it deserves a mention.

Recruiters always care about the skill set you'd bring about to the application support analyst role. That's why it's a good idea to cherry pick yours wisely, integrating both hard (or technical) and soft skills.

Hard skills are gained through studying, are certifiable, and it's impossible to do your job without them. All in all, they show your suitability for the technical aspect of the role.

Your soft skills are those personality traits you've gained over time and most often than not - outside of the workplace. Soft skills are more difficult to quantify but are definitely worth it - as they show how you'll fit and adapt into a new team environment.

How do you build the skills section of your resume?

  • Include up to five or six skills in the section as keywords to align with the advert.
  • Create a specific technical skills section to highlight your hard skills aptitude.
  • Read more about the culture of the company you're applying and cherry pick the soft skills you have that deserve a mention.
  • Make sure you answer the majority of the job requirements that are in the advert within your skills section.

A application support analyst's resume requires a specific skill set that balances both industry-specific hard skills with personal, soft skills. Discover the most often used ones on application support analyst resumes from our list:
