Why Choose Roots Internships in Creative Writing

Find out from our previous interns how internship positions in Creative Writing can boost your professional career and grow your interpersonal skills.

I’ve been in charge of social media, Google Ads, data entry and analysis, designing graphics, and creating a Wikipedia page. The experience has been very enjoyable and I’ve gotten to do a lot of work. Probably the biggest project I’ve gotten to work on is their national television campaign in Malawi, which used graphics I created as part of the programs. Besides the experience it has added to my resume, this internship also gave me a lot of insight into what I want to do in the future. I learned about how a nonprofit operates, which was very illuminating. The internship met my expectations and provided an engaging and meaningful work experience.

Noah, Northeastern University, American – Remote Journalism / Content Writing Internship

I am very much enjoying the writing I am doing, and how it impacts the organization’s mission. Writing can have such a major impact on the conveyance of an organization’s achievements and goals, and I am happy to be a part of that. Blog writing, I am enjoying the most. There are so many topics to tackle and so many different ways to tackle each one. It is also incredibly interesting to learn about the impact that writing can have on an online platform – in its content, blogs, and promotions. I was able to learn about SEO, backend editing of websites, and purposeful blog writing all within the comfort of my own home. This has been immensely helpful, and I know it is a skill that will carry with me beyond this internship.

Amazing remote internship experience. I learned so much about the organization. My supervisor was very hands-on from day one and because of my gained experience, I am more comfortable with my writing abilities and social media content-creating and managing skills. I wish I could’ve done this internship in person but Isaac made me feel right at home. Our youth are our present and future. The internship has and will continue to help with my writing/journalism side ventures and my career in ethnography. I have improved my skills and gained confidence through experience.

Creative Writing Internships Abroad

Creative writing is a difficult professional field to break into; in fact, many well known authors and creative writers practice their art as a supplement to some other employment over the long haul. However, in today’s content-driven world, it has become easier than ever to find internships abroad utilizing some form of creative writing. What better way to strike inspiration in your written works of art than by pursuing a creative writing internship abroad?

Travel is, and always has been, a best friend to creative writers. By pursuing a creative writing internship abroad you will be embarking on a great global adventure. Along with valuable professional experience to place on your resume, you will return with a treasure chest of memories and impressions that will influence your scope as a writer forever. Who knows, maybe someday you’ll even write a best-selling book based on your your experience interning abroad.

Consider the highly idealistic viewpoint: wherever your heart tells you to go, follow it there. The entire world is an open field of opportunity for young writers, so what is most important is that you intern abroad in creative writing in a location that deeply fascinates and inspires you. From the great cities of Asia to the villages of Africa to the rich and diverse states of Europe , a creative writing internship abroad is your chance to design your own adventure according to where in the world intrigues you most.

Then consider the slightly more realistic viewpoint: you will want to intern abroad in a location where your native language is spoken well enough that you will be expected to write in your native language. You should also intern abroad somewhere that presents genuine opportunity in the field of creative writing, such as a location that has a developed enough infrastructure that can support the web-based functioning of modern companies and publications.

If your dream is to write while living in an isolated village of Central Asia , there probably won’t be many creative writing internships available there. You want to think practically as well as idealistically when selecting the location for your creative writing internship abroad. North America , Europe, Australia , and Anglophone countries around the world, such as South Africa , India , and the Philippines , are all good locations where it is easy to find a creative writing internship.

This is where you have to get creative (pardon the irony). Creative writing is as much an art form as music, painting, and sculpting, which are all fields that are extremely challenging to find professional success in. While your ultimate aspirations may lie in poetry, playwriting, or penning the next great novel, it is highly unlikely you will find a creative writing internship abroad directly akin to any of these pursuits.

More commonly you will find creative writing internships abroad in various journalistic forms. Blogging , travel writing , and reporting are all fields where it is very much possible to intern abroad in creative writing. Many publications and websites around the world, whether startups or well-established, are in continuous need of content creation to meet the tremendous informational demands of our modern digital-global age. This is where most of the professional opportunity in the field of creative writing lies.

It may not be the highest form of art, but remember you are just getting started in your career, and creative writers almost always rely on additional sources of income to sustain their craft. If your creative interests lay in screenwriting , there are film companies around the world which commonly hire interns as script readers or office assistants. These positions may not directly involve your own creative writing, but can give you invaluable exposure and experience in the entertainment industry nonetheless.

Travel. The most valuable part of a creative writing internship abroad is, well, going abroad. Traveling and living within another culture is a great way to develop a more confident and holistic perspective that shines through your writing. Plus, it’s a whole lot of fun!

Work Experience. If most creative writers could have their way, they would devote all of their time to their craft. Until you find elusive commercial success, you will probably need a job to sustain yourself, and putting your literary skills to use through a creative writing internship abroad can open up a whole nest of opportunity in the world of freelance and professional writing.

Practice Makes Perfect. Many young writers who have only recently moved on from education are not accustomed to writing regularly and creatively. It’s a whole different ballgame, and forces you into a situation where you have to find your flow as a writer on an everyday basis. The practice you’ll gain through a creative writing internship abroad, which will provide a regular writing routine, will be instrumental when you obtain professional success in writing in the future.
