Let’s learn how to write a travel blog post that grabs the reader’s attention immediately.

But first, the headline title needs to be engaging.

Begin by using descriptive, powerful words that catch the reader’s interest.

For example instead of “My London Day Trip” use something like “How To Plan The Ultimate Day Trip To London: 24 Hours Of Fun And Good Food”

Now that you have the headline completed, it’s time to look at the introduction section.

As usual, I always recommend using your SEO longtail keyword in the first paragraph. Get that out of the way!

Add context and background information as to what they can expect (romance them with a hook)
Share a personal anecdote or story that will want the reader to learn more

It’s also where you can include a strong call-to-action : signing up for your free guide for your newsletter subscription or sharing your post with others on Pinterest are just two examples.

This is also where you can leave your readers with a final thought about your experience. Perhaps it’s an emotional lesson learned, an interesting twist or a quote that sparks their interest to travel.

If your post is photo-heavy, do try to balance it with text that tells the story more fully than just the images.

There are other factors to consider that they just won’t know. So, from one travel blogger to another, here is how to finally write those beginning posts.

There are different ways you can go about writing your blog posts. Here’s one way:

1. Look over your brochures, pamphlets, the topic’s website, blog, and social networks (if they have any), and the notes you took to aid you as you write.

2. Reach out to any tourism reps you worked with to see if any information has changed if the attraction/etc. has any special events coming up (small biz are not so good about keeping websites/networks updated), and to let them know you are getting started on it, and let them know when you expect to post it (so they can help promote it too).

3. Decide what you want to cover and what you don’t want to forget.

4. Add in headings and subheadings as an outline to guide you along the way and help your readers know what to expect.

5. Write your intro and conclusion.

6. Add in an image or video before or after your intro and conclusion (however, you want your site design to look).

7. Write the body of your post and add a map and links as necessary. Linking to the business, destination, or event you are discussing is a good idea.

8. Revisit your intro and conclusion to see if they need a revamp.

9. Now that you know what your article is about, develop a great headline.

11. Edit again.

12. Edit one more time just to be sure.

Writing your first few blog posts is tough. It will likely take you longer than you planned. Just know that you will get faster writing your travel blog as time goes on.

They will skim the first paragraph, scan the middle then skip to the bottom. Laid out, it creates an “F” on the page, with the pattern repeated down the page for longer content.

Remember to trick and put eye-catching images and bold-faced text right where users will find it to keep them skimming down the whole page.

To better rank the search engines, blog posts should be a minimum of 1500-2000 words. Think of it like this: the longer the post, the more relevant long-tail keywords, subheadings, alt tags, and backlinks will appear in them. Google has more than 200 ways that they define “quality. ”

Medium.com discovered that the optimum blog length takes seven minutes for the average reader to get through . But maybe that isn’t the optimum blog length for you. I included them on purpose because these portfolios actually provide a more comprehensive view of the writer's work at one glance than a blog would. In a blog, you'd have to click through different sections or scroll around to find actual articles.

This is why you have to write travel posts that allow people to scan as well as read.

The blog was founded by and is still owned by The New York Times best-selling author Matt Kepnes, who wrote How to Travel the World On $50 a Day .

Matt founded the blog in 2008 after quitting his job two years prior to travel around the world on a budget. His goal is to teach people how to travel on a budget just as he did when he was starting out.

He’s been to over a 100 countries and territories ever since.

However, the blog is quite active with multiple writers contributing to it, so the site is always pushing out new content.

While the site has a Blog page, they don’t insert a link to it in their navigation menu as most blogs do.

Their navigation menu features multiple parent and child categories instead, including parent categories for continents and major territories, and categories named Budget Travel, Work & Travel, Gear, and Travel Tips.

The couple has visited over 25 countries in North America, Central America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania.

Charlotte Plans a Trip publishes posts to a small handful of parent categories, including Personal, Tips & Tricks, and Travel Guides.

Smaller categories include Diary, Budget Tips, Travel Photography, Packing Lists, Hotel Guides and Itineraries.

She publishes short to medium-form posts that use a lot of images.

There are also a few long-form posts here and there.

Charlotte Plans a Trip uses ads and affiliate links to monetize her travel blog.

Sticky ads display at the bottom of the viewport as well as in the sidebar. There are also fixed ads in each post’s body text.

She also creates sponsored posts and offers consultancy services, including coming up with personalized itineraries.

Charlotte Plans a Trip is active on Instagram and Instagram alone.

She receives a few dozen to a few hundred likes per post.

Final thoughts

That concludes our list of travel blog examples.

These blogs come in a wide range of traffic, from blogs that receive hundreds of thousands of views per month to ones that barely reach over 100,000.

Some use teams, and some are run by couples who split responsibilities across their blogs.

Yet despite these differences, we can spot a number of different trends across each blog.

The first is the type of content they create.

While some blogs have a particular angle or cover all travel types, all of these blogs have categories and posts aimed at traveling on a budget.

This tells us that budget travel is its own sub niche within the travel blogging space.

The second trend we noticed is income streams.

Some blogs sell their own Lightroom presets, guidebooks and art prints. Some offer consulting services and host travel tours.

Income streams all travel blogs seem to have in common are ads and affiliate marketing.

So, if you’re just getting started with your own travel blog, consider looking into these income streams first.

Blogger favorites AdThrive and Mediavine are fantastic ad networks to use to display niche-specific ads on blogs.

The final trends we noticed have to do with social media.

The first is that the majority of these blogs are active on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and sometimes YouTube, but they all receive most of their engagements from Instagram.

The second trend we noticed is that there’s no correlation between social media popularity and web traffic.

Nomadic Matt receives four times the amount of traffic as The Blonde Abroad does, but her engagement rates on platforms like Instagram and Facebook are consistently higher than Matt’s.

The same is true for Salt in Our Hair, who receive less than half of the amount of traffic as Nomadic Matt receives, yet videos they post to Instagram receive tens of thousands of likes.

This shows us two things: you don’t need a large social media following to succeed in the world of blogging. Also, social media is a severely underutilized and misused form of marketing in the blogging space.

TYPES OF BLOG POSTS

There are generally four types of blogs used for assessment tasks. However, blog post assessments and expectations will vary across disciplines and lecturers. Always ask your lecturer for clarification.

How to structure a blog

It is important to think about the structure of your blog before you start writing. Consider the following tips:

Planning : Make sure you understand the assessment task and have carefully read all the course information. Ask yourself, why are you being asked to produce a blog, what is the topic and subject you are making the blog about?
Select your topic: This may be dictated from your course materials (you might be given a number to select from). If you are given a choice think carefully about you would like to write your blog post on.
Research: make sure you research the topic and have collected information and sources from reliable sources and that these sources are referenced according to your referencing style. Our referencing guide is useful here
Create an engaging title for your blog: This will connect your blog title to the content you have created. This will also engage your audience with your blog post. This is especially useful if you have been asked to post a copy of your blog onto your course discussion forum.
Write your blog: Start writing your first draft and start with the introduction. Consider the word count for your blog post and set time aside to complete. At first you might find that it is difficult to get words onto the paper, especially when you are new to writing. However, like most skills, the more you do it the easier it becomes.
Paragraphs and sentences are often shorter in blog posts than standard academic writing. This makes it easier to read the blog post and engage with the audience (reader). Top tips for writing well is an excellent additonal resource to support the development of your writing skills.
The use of images: You can also choose to use images in your blog post to support the content of your blog post. However, remember to keep your blog post simple and free of clutter. If you are using images, cite them correctly in your work. (It is always a good idea to check the requirements for the layout of your blog post with your course co-ordinator/lecturer).
Edit your blog: Plan enough time to edit your blog, this includes looking carefully at spellings, grammar, and the overall content of the blog post. Try to avoid repeating word choices throughout the blog (we all have our favourite words we like to use!). Consider if your points come across well, have you stated your position (if you have taken one), does your blog provide enough detail and information for the reader? Having another set of eyes to look over your work can also help too.

A blog (short for “weblog”) is a personal journal on the web where you integrate your personal experience with evidence and analysis. You may be asked to submit a blog entry as part or all of an assessment task. Typically students submit their blog entries to an appropriate location on the course BlackBoard site.

Blogs are different to reflective journal writing because:

They are written to share with other people.
They require frequent updating.

Note: Sometimes the terms 'reflective writing' and 'blogs' are used interchangeably. If unsure, check with your lecturer to see if they want a piece of reflective writing completed online, or a blog.

Are less formal than essays and reports.
The argument you put forward includes evidence, but also your own perspective.
Allow you to be creative with the structure (unless you have been provided with a structure from your lecturer).
Use short paragraphs, bullet points, bold text, italics, underlining, and headings.
Use images, videos, and links to demonstrate your thinking.
Require referencing.

Why use a blog?

To log your progress on a particular course or independent learning task
To use as a collaborative blog with other students or as part of group work.
To reach a wider audience on a particular topic or subject (via a published blog post on a website or University discussion forum)

Travel nurses take short-term contracts that can require long commutes or temporarily living away from home. Time and again, they have to get used to new co-workers, new protocols and new workplaces.

So why would staff nurses quit their stable jobs to become travel nurses?

Well, for one, they get bigger paychecks . But U.S. nurses have other rationales besides making more money, according to a study I conducted .

To do this research, I interviewed 27 registered nurses based in different places.

Many of the people I interviewed disclosed that they left permanent positions to combat burnout. Although they welcomed the bump in pay, travel nursing also gave them the autonomy to decide when and where to work. That autonomy allowed them to pursue personal and professional interests that were meaningful to them, and it made some of the other hassles, such as long commutes, worth it.

On top of earning more money, travel nursing “gives you an opportunity to explore different areas,” said a nurse I’ll call Cynthia, because research rules require anonymity. “When you actually live there for three months, it gives you a chance to really immerse yourself in the area and really get to know not just the touristy stuff, but really hang out with the locals and really be exposed to that area.”

Other study participants said they enjoyed the novelty and educational opportunities.

“You don’t get bored or stuck in a routine,” Michelle said. “You’re always trying to learn new policies at the new hospital that you’re in, learning about the new doctors, nursing staff, new ways of doing things, where things are located. That helps keep me from feeling burned out so quickly.”

Said Patricia: “I want to see how other operating rooms across the country do things and how they do things differently. I do learn a lot of things going from place to place.”

Why it matters

A growing number of U.S. nurses were obtaining temporary assignments before the COVID-19 pandemic began.

But travel nursing became much more widespread in 2020, when hospitals were scrambling to keep their staffing levels high enough as millions of Americans were becoming infected with the coronavirus, straining capacity in many communities.

While compensation varies widely, the median pay of registered nurses in 2022 was US$81,220 , about 35% less than the $110,000 that registered nurses who traveled earned .

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, travel nurses could earn an even bigger premium . Many were paid twice as much as staff nurses.

Once the number of Americans with severe symptoms fell, that premium declined too . But there are still over 1.7 million travel nurses in the U.S. Hiring them is one of the main ways that hospitals cope with a long-term shortage of nurses .

But nurses with permanent jobs can get aggravated by this arrangement when they learn how much more travel nurses earn for doing the same work, as I found through another research project .

What other research is being done

Research supports a widely reported trend: More Americans have temporary jobs and freelance employment than in the past.

While travel nurses can help hospitals, nursing homes and doctors’ offices meet staffing needs, there are signs that patients don’t always fare as well with their care.

And a Canadian study found that when hospitals let staff nurses work part time and offer other alternative arrangements, their retention rates may rise .
