Types of deserts • Tropical deserts – southern Sahara in Africa • Temperate deserts – Mojave in Southern California • Cold deserts – Gobi in China

Deserts cover about one-fifth of the Earth’s land surface. • Most deserts are near the Tropic of Capricorn or the Tropic of Cancer. • Deserts can be found all around the world, particularly in southwest United States, south America, northern Africa, central Australia, the middle east, and China.

Deserts: where & why Deserts & winds

Desert – an ecosystem found where there is very little rainfall. • Deserts are dry and hot. There are very few clouds. • Two kinds of deserts: • Hot deserts • Cold deserts • Hot deserts • Temperatures are very warm all year round • The summers are very hot • Cold deserts • Short, warm summers • Long, cold winters • Found in places near the north and south poles

Location • The Sahara desert covers the northern section of Africa, and spreads over almost all the “top of the continent, it is the largest hot desert in the world, as well as the second largest desert on earth after Antarctica.

Climate • Deserts are areas of land that usually receive less than thirty centimeters of rain each year. • Deserts have cold nights, and extremely hot days. • Most deserts usually receive about fifteen centimeters of rain each year.

Climate (Atmosphere and Hydrosphere) • The desert temperature is not always hot. During the night, desert temperatures are quite cold, even below freezing point. The daytime temperatures are hot because there is very little cloud cover. This means that maximum radiation from the sun reaches the surface of the earth. In summer the temperature can reach as high as 40°C, while in winter, the temperature can reach 24°C.

Large diurnal range • At night time, the lack of cloud cover allows the heat of the day to escape quickly, resulting in cold, even freezing, temperatures. The difference between the daily minimum and maximum temperatures is known as the diurnal range.

Extremely hot days and very cold nights: • Cloudless skiesallow the sun to heat the atmosphere very quickly to very high temperatures. At night this same lack of cloud cover means that there is no insulation to hold the heat in and it escapes very quickly to the clear night sky.

So night temperatures are very cold and can even drop below freezing. • Deserts have a very high DIURNAL (daily) range of temperatures, usually more than 20C. • The annual temperature ranges are also (difference between summer and winter) are also relatively high in deserts.

Sahara desert • Rainfall less then 50 cm a year • Temperatures range from 20-25 degrees extreme maximum ranges from 43.5-49 degrees • participation is less then ten inches a year.

why very few clouds form in tropical deserts ? • Distance from oceans • Winds blow over large areas of land • Winds blow offshore/do not blow from sea hence no source of moisture/water sources • Low humidity • Lack of evaporation • Sparse vegetation • Lack of transpiration • High air pressure • Descending air • Cold offshore currents

Plants • Deserts have very little foliage, and cacti are usually scattered across the dry, barren land. • Plants that grow in the desert are just shrubs and woody trees. • Cacti store water in there bodies when it rains so they can retrieve it for later use. • Desert vegetation is scattered and spread out and almost all of the plants have spiny leaves.

Some Plants Include: • Barrel Cactus • Brittle Bush • ChainfruitCholla • Creosote Bush • Crimson Hedgehog Cactus • Desert Ironwood • Joshua Tree • Jumping Cholla • Mojave Aster • Ocotillo • Palo Verde • Pancake Prickly Pear Cactus • Saguaro Cactus • Soaptree Yucca • Triangle-leaf Bursage

Relationshipbetween the climate and the natural vegetation • Low precipitation (aridity) results in scattered (sparse) vegetation • Seeds (plants) remain dormant during long dry spells • Narrow (spiky) leaves reduce rates of evapotranspiration/because of high temperatures • Long roots (wide spreading roots) search for water • Some plants (cacti) store water in order to survive long periods of drought

Animals • Most of the animals that live in the desert have adapted to be able to live in the hot weather by burrowing underground during the day and only coming out at night. • Animals in the desert have also developed a unique ability to store water, which could come from the seeds they eat, or the animals they eat. • Animals are usually small nocturnal carnivores.

Some Animals Include: • Armadillo Lizard • Banded Gila Monster • Bobcat • Cactus Wren • Coyote • Desert Bighorn Sheep • Desert Kangaroo Rat • Desert Tortoise • Javelina • Cactus Ferruginous Pygmy Owl • Sonoran Desert Toad • Sonoran Pronghorn Antelope • Thorny Devil

Natural environment is threatened by human activities • The area is used for farming • Animals are killed • Tourists destroy dunes • large herds of animals are grazed in the area which destroys pastures • Resources/oil is mined/drilled in the area and wildlife is killed as habitat is destroyed • The use of quad bikes/trampling on the dunes wears them away

South America and Africa, experience a tropical rainforest climate whilst other parts experience a tropical desert climate. • factors such as: • Latitude • Influence of overhead sun • Distance from oceans • Presence/absence of moderating influence of water body • Wind direction/trade winds/doldrums • Lack of/presence of evaporation • Presence/absence of cloud cover • Air pressure

What is a desert.

A desert is an arid region characterized by extremely high or low temperatures , low rainfall, and scarce vegetation .  You would also find a scarcity of water. It is very difficult to live in a place where there is no water to drink, no grass to feed the cattle and no water for the growth of grass.

It is a wonder that people who live in the deserts have learned to cope up with extremely harsh climates . Depending on the temperature, we can find hot deserts or cold deserts. People inhabit these lands wherever little water is available to practice agriculture. In this chapter, we will discuss desert of Sahara.

The Sahara Desert

The Sahara desert covers a large part of North Africa. It has the following features:

• Sahara is the world’s largest desert. It covers an area of around 8.54 million square kilometres (which is more than the total area of India!!).
• The desert touches eleven countries which are as follows: Algeria, Morocco, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Sudan, Tunisia and Western Sahara.
• It has gravel plains and elevated plateaus with a bare rocky surface. These rocky surfaces, at some places, are more than 2500 m high.

The climate of the Sahara desert is scorching hot and parched dry. It has a short rainy season. Since the sky is cloudless and clear, the rate of water evaporation is greater than the rate of water accumulation. Hence, there is water scarcity. However, the nights may be freezing cold with temperatures nearing zero degrees Celsius.

Flora and Fauna

• Flora:  Vegetation in the Sahara desert includes cactus, date palms and acacia. We can find an oasis in some places.
• Fauna:  The animal species found here are camels, hyenas, jackals, foxes, scorpions and many varieties of snakes and lizards.

People of Sahara Desert

Different groups of people inhabit the Sahara desert. They are engaged in different activities. Among them are the Bedouins and the Tuaregs. These groups are nomadic tribes. They wear heavy robes to protect them from the harsh climate i.e. dust storms and hot winds. The tribes are engaged in animal rearing. Animals such as sheep, goats, camels, and horses are reared for the following purposes:

• Hides: These are used to make leather for belts, slippers and water bottles.
• Hair: This is used to make mats, carpets, clothes, and blankets.

Growing Date Palms and Agriculture

The oasis in the Sahara and Nile valley in Egypt supports settled population. Since water is available, people grow date palms. Other crops that are grown include rice, wheat barley, and beans. Egyptian cotton is grown in Egypt.

Changes In The Desert

Sahara desert is experiencing constant transformation because of the discovery of oil. This discovery has been made in Libya and Egypt etc. We can also find other important minerals like iron, phosphorus, manganese, and uranium.

• We also find a lot of changes caused due to business and infrastructural development.
• Gleaming glass cased office buildings tower over mosques and superhighways crisscross the ancient camel paths.
• Trucks are replacing camels in the salt trade.
• Tuaregs are seen acting as guides to foreign tourists.
• Many nomadic tribes are finding jobs in the field of oil and gas operations, and migrating to cities.

What is a Mirage?

Under a baking sun, a weary traveller trudges across a seemingly never-ending expanse of desert . Looking up, he suddenly spots something in the distance: a sparkling lake. He rubs his eyes. It’s still there. Picking up the pace in glee he strides ahead… only for the water to melt into thin air . Doesn’t that sound fun?

Well, it actually is science ! Mirages are a naturally-occurring optical illusion. In cartoons, a mirage is often depicted as a peaceful, lush oasis lying in the shade of swaying palm trees, but in reality, it is much more likely to look like a pool of water.

The illusion results from a way in which light is refracted (bent) through the air at different temperatures. Cold air is denser than warm air and therefore has a greater refractive index. This means that as light passes down from cool to hot air. It gets bent upwards towards the denser air and away from the ground.

To your eyes, these distorted rays seem to be coming from the ground, so you perceive a refracted image of the sky on the ground. This looks just like a reflection on the surface of a pool of water . This causes confusion.

Dubai’s Extraordinary Flooding: Here’s What to Know

Images of a saturated desert metropolis startled the world, prompting talk of cloud seeding, climate change and designing cities for intensified weather.

Scenes of flood-ravaged neighborhoods in one of the planet’s driest regions have stunned the world this week. Heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates and Oman submerged cars, clogged highways and killed at least 21 people. Flights out of Dubai’s airport, a major global hub, were severely disrupted.

The downpours weren’t a freak event — forecasters anticipated the storms several days out and issued warnings. But they were certainly unusual. Here’s what to know.

Heavy rain there is rare, but not unheard-of.

On average, the Arabian Peninsula receives a scant few inches of rain a year, although scientists have found that a sizable chunk of that precipitation falls in infrequent but severe bursts, not as periodic showers.

U.A.E. officials said the 24-hour rain total on Tuesday was the country’s largest since records there began in 1949 . But parts of the nation had experienced an earlier round of thunderstorms just last month.

Oman, with its coastline on the Arabian Sea, is also vulnerable to tropical cyclones. Past storms there have brought torrential rain, powerful winds and mudslides, causing extensive damage.

Global warming is projected to intensify downpours.

Stronger storms are a key consequence of human-caused global warming. As the atmosphere gets hotter, it can hold more moisture, which can eventually make its way down to the earth as rain or snow.

But that doesn’t mean rainfall patterns are changing in precisely the same way across every corner of the globe.

In their latest assessment of climate research , scientists convened by the United Nations found there wasn’t enough data to have firm conclusions about rainfall trends in the Arabian Peninsula and how climate change was affecting them. The researchers said, however, that if global warming were to be allowed to continue worsening in the coming decades, extreme downpours in the region would quite likely become more intense and more frequent.

The role of cloud seeding isn’t clear.

The U.A.E. has for decades worked to increase rainfall and boost water supplies by seeding clouds. Essentially, this involves shooting particles into clouds to encourage the moisture to gather into larger, heavier droplets, ones that are more likely to fall as rain or snow.

Cloud seeding and other rain-enhancement methods have been tried across the world, including in Australia, China, India, Israel, South Africa and the United States. Studies have found that these operations can, at best, affect precipitation modestly — enough to turn a downpour into a bigger downpour, but probably not a drizzle into a deluge.

Still, experts said pinning down how much seeding might have contributed to this week’s storms would require detailed study.

“In general, it is quite a challenge to assess the impact of seeding,” said Luca Delle Monache, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. Dr. Delle Monache has been leading efforts to use artificial intelligence to improve the U.A.E.’s rain-enhancement program.

An official with the U.A.E.’s National Center of Meteorology, Omar Al Yazeedi, told news outlets this week that the agency didn’t conduct any seeding during the latest storms. His statements didn’t make clear, however, whether that was also true in the hours or days before.

Mr. Al Yazeedi didn’t respond to emailed questions from The New York Times on Thursday, and Adel Kamal, a spokesman for the center, didn’t immediately have further comment.

Cities in dry places just aren’t designed for floods.

Wherever it happens, flooding isn’t just a matter of how much rain comes down. It’s also about what happens to all that water once it’s on the ground — most critically, in the places people live.

Cities in arid regions often aren’t designed to drain very effectively. In these areas, paved surfaces block rain from seeping into the earth below, forcing it into drainage systems that can easily become overwhelmed.

One recent study of Sharjah , the capital of the third-largest emirate in the U.A.E., found that the city’s rapid growth over the past half century had made it vulnerable to flooding at far lower levels of rain than before.

The Body Deli on El Paseo invites you to experience its unique exhibit of vintage Barbie dolls on display amidst a colorful festive atmosphere. The exhibit includes a giant Ferris wheel (like the one at Empire Polo Club during the festivals), a rainbow tower (just like "Spectra" on the festival grounds), and even a stage with a Taylor Swift doll singing as this festival’s headliner (something we've yet to see at the festival in real life, but you never know). With 32 Barbie and Ken dolls, the dazzling display was orchestrated by Margaret Clark, co-founder of The Body Deli, from her 60+ years of collecting Barbie dolls.

Desert Theatreworks presents 'To Kill a Mockingbird'

Harper Lee's beloved Pulitzer Prize-winning book "To Kill a Mockingbird" comes to life in this play, which opens on a sleepy Alabama town in the midst of the Great Depression. Main character Scout and her brother, Jem, live here with their widowed father, Atticus Finch. The facade of the seemingly peaceful town begins to crack when a young Black man is accused of a terrible crime. Driven by an unshakeable moral conviction, local lawyer Atticus defends the man in a trial that sends violent waves through the community. All these years later, this work remains a powerful tale about racism, compassion and the difference between right and wrong.

The Bent presents 'The Lincoln Debate'

"The Lincoln Debate," the popular play by local theater artist Terry Ray that launched The Bent theater last year, is back. The world premiere garnered rave reviews, and was nominated for seven Desert Theater League Awards, including Best Comedy and Best Director. Only seen by Palm Springs audiences, this show explores the four years that Abraham Lincoln shared a bed with a man that history records as his “best friend.” Was it more than just a friendship? After hearing the facts, you decide for yourself. Jason Reale and Alex Price return to their award-winning roles as Lincoln and his bedmate, and the show also stars Ray, Angela Landis and Amber Lux Archer. Steve Rosenbaum once again directs.

The River Spring Music Series

The spring concert series presented by the City of Rancho Mirage Cultural Commission ends this Saturday, so prepare to kick your night off with live music. This week, Radio Ready is back to groove to the exhilarating tunes of yesterday and today. The set will also feature guest singers as well as the High Hopes Dance Troupe (all disabilities dance troupe). Guests also have the chance to win prizes from local businesses such as The Ritz Carlton, The Omni Rancho Mirage, Acrisure Arena (VIP tickets to a Firebirds game) and more by entering our raffle. All of the proceeds from the raffle, hosted by the Rotary Club of Palm Desert, go to Fenixia Foundation, a local nonprofit supporting autism and disability acceptance. Molly Haskell book talk and "The Palm Beach Story" presentation

Legendary film critic and author Molly Haskell will be making a rare West Coast appearance in Palm Springs this weekend to speak on classic films and sign her books. Haskell is the author of six books, including "From Reverence To Rape, the Treatment of Women in the Movies," cited by The Hollywood Reporter as one of the most influential film books of all time. She's written for The New York Times, The Guardian UK, Esquire, The Village Voice, New York Magazine, Vogue and many more publications. She has also served as an associate professor of film at Barnard, and as adjunct professor of film at Columbia University. Haskell will speak and sign books at the April 27 screening of "The Palm Beach Story" starring Claudette Colbert, and the April 28 screening of "Design for Living" starring Gary Cooper at the Camelot Theater.

Dubai floods: Chaos, queues and submerged cars after UAE hit by record rains

Don’t blame cloud seeding for the Dubai floods

Dubai is wrestling with the aftermath of extraordinary torrential rains that flooded the desert city, with people describing harrowing stories of spending the night in their cars, and air passengers enduring chaotic scenes at airports.

Up to 259.5mm (10.2in) of rain fell on the usually arid country of the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, the most since records began 75 years ago . The state-run WAM news agency called the rains on Tuesday “a historic weather event” that surpassed “anything documented since the start of data collection in 1949”.

As the sun returned on Wednesday, along with it came stories of people stuck in cars and offices through an arduous night.

“It was one of the most horrific situations I had ever experienced,” said one Dubai resident in his 30s, who did not want to give his name, after his 15-minute commute turned into a 12-hour ordeal on flooded roads.

At Dubai’s airport, one of the busiest for international travel, with nearly every flight repeatedly delayed, Emirates passengers were told to stay away “unless absolutely necessary”.

Frustration from those already there began to build.

A large crowd formed at a connections desk, clapping and whistling in protest as they waited for information.

“They are completely lost, it’s complete chaos – no information, nothing,” fumed one passenger, who did not want to be named, after a 12-hour wait, Agence France-Presse reported.

Standing water lapped on taxiways as aircraft landed. One couple called the situation “absolute carnage”. They spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity in order to speak freely in a country with strict laws that criminalise critical speech. “You cannot get a taxi. There’s people sleeping in the Metro station. There’s people sleeping in the airport.”

The BBC reported other passengers were diverted to Dubai World Central Airport – also known as Al Maktoum airport – telling the broadcaster they had been “living on duty free” and that water was in short supply.

One furious British traveller told PA Media that once his flight was diverted to Dubai World Central, he had not been given any food or water either. “It’s just been an absolute disaster. We’re stuck here and seven hours without a single update is inexcusable.”

Emirates, Dubai’s flagship airline, posted on X on Wednesday night: “Customers should expect delays with departures and arrivals” and that while some passengers had been able to get to their destinations “we are aware that many are still waiting to get on flights”.

The airline cancelled all check-ins and announced that it would continue to suspend services until Thursday morning, apologising for the disruptions. Those on FlyDubai, Emirates’ low-cost sister airline, also faced delays.

Dubai airport posted on X early on Thursday that flights had resumed from Terminal 1 but urged people to travel to the airport only if they had a confirmed booking, as flights continued to be “delayed and disrupted”.

Paul Griffiths, the airport’s CEO, acknowledged the issues with flooding on Wednesday. “It remains an incredibly challenging time. In living memory, I don’t think anyone has ever seen conditions like it,” Griffiths told the state-owned talk radio station Dubai Eye.

Neighbouring countries were also hit by heavy rains earlier this week, including Oman, where 20 people have died, including 10 schoolchildren swept away in a vehicle with an adult.

Soldiers were deployed to badly affected areas of the sultanate, which rests on the eastern edge of the Arabian peninsula, to evacuate people trapped by flooding.

Schools will stay closed in Dubai until next week, authorities said, underscoring the difficulty of the clean-up.

In an unusual direct intervention, the UAE president, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, ordered “authorities to quickly work on studying the condition of infrastructure throughout the UAE and to limit the damage caused”, official media said.

The president also gave orders for affected families to be transferred to safe locations, said a statement carried by the WAM news agency.

Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, wrote on X about “efforts being made by teams of citizens and residents that continue day and night” as the city’s media office posted video overlayed with dramatic music of officials conferring in groups and water pumping appearing to take place in the background.

Photos too were posted of what it said showed water flooding into desert areas.

Similar scenes were visible around the Gulf state including in Sharjah, in neighbouring Dubai, where people waded through main streets and paddled around on makeshift boats.

At least one person was killed in the flooding. A 70-year-old man who was swept away in his car in Ras al-Khaimah, one of the country’s seven emirates, according to police.

The UAE government announced that remote working for most federal government employees had been extended into another day because of the impact.
