Item description
This simple system designed to help teachers track missing assignments works for classrooms grades 4-12. Two editable printable forms and a record sheet make for a system that will easily fit your needs.
+ A half page version of the Homework Slip + A quarter page version of the Homework Slip
+ Record Sheet for tracking Missing Work
+ Both Versions in an Editable Microsoft Word File
+ Both Versions in an Editable PowerPoint File
Version One Includes:
Sized: Half Page
Date, Name, Class Period, Name of Assignment, 6 checkboxes to choose from, with space for an explanation.
Checkboxes:
I did the assigned homework, but did not bring it to class.
I chose not to do my homework.
I forgot to do my homework.
I did not have the materials I needed at home.
I lost my homework.
Other: ______
Version Two Includes:
Sized: Quarter Page
Name, assignment, due date, with space for reason it is not being turned in, and student signature.
Includes a statement about grading policy and late grade.
HOW IT WORKS:
+ If a student doesn’t have their completed work for ANY reason, they are required to fill out and submit the homework slip instead.
+ The Homework Slip is a way for students to give their explanation without embarrassment. It is also a reminder to the student of their responsibility. When collecting homework, I can take a quick peak at the slip, and if needed, I can have a private chat with the student later.
+ When grading, I will keep all the Homework Slips in a stack next to the graded assignments. I enter the grades in the grade-book as usual. Then I pick up the stack of Homework Slips. In the comments section of the student’s grade, I will quote the student’s reason for not turning in their assignment.
+ If your grade-book does not allow for adding this information, use the provided record sheet to track the information.
ADDED BENEFITS
+ When conferencing with students and parents, use a printed grade report that shows the comments. Reference the student explanations when questioned about why the student is not turning it their work. Using quotes from the student puts the focus and responsibility on the student and not the teacher.
“I LOVE this solution to late homework. I will continue to use this. It puts the accountability on the students and helps me keep track of late and missing assignments.”

Missing Homework: Do you use slips?

In the past I have emailed home. I´m thinking to have my TA fill out a homework slip for those who missed hw instead of me emailing for next year. How do you inform parents (and the age of my kids their parents normally know and it´s generally the parents´fault that hw did not get home...of course I always have a few incidents that parents didn´t know and it was because hw fell out...or hidden!!). I just quickly made a missing homework slip: https://docs.google.com/drawings/d/1Ds35ZL0OMDpxHUK5Xjz9uRxccGKi5b1ooiQnqS_bgGU/edit?usp=sharing I don´t know if I will use it. What do you all do and use?

I give homework but I don't actually use it for grades because I know that most of them will not be returned. It depends on where you work and the parent involvement. If it's normally like 1 or 2 kids then I would say maybe a slip would suffice. Me on the other hand, I'm lucky if I get half of them back, and I rarely see parents. It's hard to even get an answer on the phone. I hold my students accountable for the work we do in class only.
a2z said: ↑ Is the bolded part really what you intended to say? I ask because I can't understand how it can be the parents fault the homework did not get home . As for the slip, it is cute, but if the problem is that the homework doesn't make it home in the first place, you will have the same problem with a slip of paper. E-mailing may be a better option unless the parent doesn't check the e-mail that was given to you. Click to expand...

Incomplete homework is a battle that wasn't worth fighting (for me, at least). Plus, it seems as though the kids who never turned in homework were the ones who needed recess the most; therefore, I wasn't about to take away their recess (not that you were planning to do that, TamiJ! I know many teachers do, though). I did, however, reward students who did turn in homework for the entire month. On the last Friday of each month, we had Lunch Bunch. Instead of eating lunch in the cafeteria, students with 100% completion rate for the month would eat lunch in the classroom with me while watching a movie. At the end of lunch, we'd have ice cream. No one wanted to miss Lunch Bunch. No one!

As a 6th grade teacher, I'm thrilled to hear that even lower grade teachers are focusing in HW completion habits. I suspect that those disorganized little 1st grade apples who can't remember to take papers home , nor bring them back, have not fallen far from the adults in their trees who don't remember to renew their car registrations. Keep fighting the battle, but don't expect to win every time. I use a "pink slip" that each student fills out. It contains a check list with reasons why the assignment wasn't completed, and a place for students to say when they plan to complete it. I'm thinking that won't work for you, sorry.
Thanks for elaborating, TamiJ. Based on your further description, it seems your change has nothing to do with getting homework back from these kids but to off load your communication to the TA. I doubt it will help these 2 families ensure the homework gets done at home (or ensures it gets back to school). It also could create a situation where the parent then can claim she doesn't know about missing homework if the slip doesn't get home or even if it does because there will be no proof that the slip was actually sent or made it home. So, I can't say that the slip is a good idea. It depends on the purpose of the slip.

My homework for the last 4 years has been something I couldn't give a grade even if I wanted too. Our phonics program gives word lists and little readers. I also give my own word list. At the end of the six weeks when I give them the assessment for the 6 weeks I know who has done their homework and who hasn't. It's obvious when we have a list of 10 words and your kid doesn't know any of them. I put the lists and little readers into their folders every week. If yours hasn't been touched or spilled on it's pretty obvious then too. I don't give rewards for doing homework nor do I take things away. I teach kinder and I try very hard at the beginning of the year to start motivating them and making them understand homework is very important. And that it is THEIR responsibility to do it. Just like bringing their folder back everyday is on them. Not Mom. But on the other hand if parents don't ask or motivate their own children to care about their education then why should a child. I ask everyday to both my children I have at home, do you have homework, and they are both motivated but they are still children who need reminding.
Then I think the slip is a great idea! You offload some of your work that isn't producing results and have the communication that is required. I hope it goes over well.

I'm grade 3... I have kids sign my missing hw book. If they bring in the next day, they cross off name. When a kid signs the book 3-4 times in a short time period without bringing the work in, i send a form i created home to be signed by parents...it says something along the lines of: ......has not turned in the following hw assignments. I have discussed the importance of independent practice and responsibility with your student. Your support at home in reinforcing these ideas regarding homework is appreciated. Please sign below to indicate you have received this notice and have your student return this to m. Thank you.

DrivingPigeon said: ↑ I did this one year, and I was given a really hard time by the parents. If their child wasn't able to participate, they gave me a million excuses as to why the homework wasn't done. One parent even complained to administration. It just wasn't worth the battle. I don't really assign a lot of homework, but if students are missing homework I just have them stay in for recess to work on it. They have one 35-minute recess. I make them work for 15 minutes, and then let them go out, so they still have 20 minutes to play. Most of the time, they finish the homework in the 15 minutes. If they don't, I have them bring it home to finish. Back to your original question, I think your homework slips are a good idea. I might try something similar, just as a way to notify parents that homework was missing. Although, the kids who are usually missing homework are the ones whose parents don't check their folders and responsibility logs. Click to expand...
