• Challenges & Solution

Company : GELA

GELA – Grupo Empresarial las Américas is a leading group of enterprises in the healthcare industry with operations in both Florida and Latin America. The organization operates 9 independent companies with a CAP and AABB accredited medical laboratory, an oncology institute, a high complexity clinic and an outpatient services clinic.

Critical Need

To establish a VMware hybrid cloud that allows increasing the capacity, availability, and performance of their IT infrastructure while providing fast and efficient online health services to patients and treating physicians over the globe. Thus, enabling GELA with a disaster recovery and high availability solution that could eventually handle all their workloads in the future In this solution a SAN backed storage was a requirement in order to provide full backup services for both on-premises and public cloud environments as well as to offer vMotion and easy VM migrations.

Challenges Faced

Challenge 1: networking architecture.

Organizing and establishing a well-defined vlan and sub network infrastructure on premises that could be easily and efficiently scaled and incorporated into a public cloud.

Challenge 2: Sizing of workloads

Establishing adequate sizing of workloads in order to determine which workloads stayed on-premise and which workloads were more adequate to be migrated to the public cloud.

Challenge 3: Security and patient information privacy

GELA patients needed to be guaranteed privacy and seamless connectivity between their private and public clouds under every possible work protocol.

Solution Provided

We at ne Digital, an IBM Advanced Business Partner, built an elastic hybrid cloud based on VMware vSphere that seamlessly expands GELA’s local data center into two IBM Cloud data centers. This empowered their IT team to control all workloads, clusters, hosts, and virtual machines from a single vCenter with complete flexibility and high availability.

Implementation Strategy

Infrastructure.

This solution makes use of Bare Metal machines for ESXi hypervisors, OS Nexus SAN storage system and a Brocade vRouter Firewall to ensure that VPN connectivity between data centers is established and maintained in a secure fashion with complete granular control.

A complete set of VLANs was configured to segment traffic for management, redundant storage, public traffic, and a three-tier environment for database, application servers and web servers.

Connectivity

The on-premise networking is comprised of IBM and Juniper switching and routing and an IPSEC VPN tunnel was established between a Juniper SRX Cluster and the Brocade vRouter in IBM Cloud.

IBM Cloud Lowering Latency to Under 15 Milliseconds With Direct Link

Proximity to our customers is crucial to driving innovation and improving a better end user experience. We turned to Digital Realty to assist us in our international expansion efforts because their facilities gave us a way to rapidly deploy and get our data center operations live quickly.

This case study covers IBM partnering with Digital Realty to put IBM Cloud Data Centers right next door to Digital Realty’s world-class data center deployments, with direct dark fiber connection between them. This solution allows IBM Cloud to secure private cloud deployments while delivering industry-leading connectivity and throughput speeds. The size of Digital Realty’s global footprint, with more than 25 million sq. ft. of data center space worldwide and more than 2,000 customers, gives it the clout to secure a very favorable cost of power for its customers. This cost structure constitutes a measurable competitive advantage, which IBM Cloud is able to pass on to its customers.

Case study: Building an Image Trust Service on Kubernetes with Notary and TUF

IBM Cloud offers public, private, and hybrid cloud functionality across a diverse set of runtimes from its OpenWhisk-based function as a service (FaaS) offering, managed Kubernetes and containers, to Cloud Foundry platform as a service (PaaS). These runtimes are combined with the power of the company's enterprise technologies, such as MQ and DB2, its modern artificial intelligence (AI) Watson, and data analytics services. Users of IBM Cloud can exploit capabilities from more than 170 different cloud native services in its catalog, including capabilities such as IBM's Weather Company API and data services. In the later part of 2017, the IBM Cloud Container Registry team wanted to build out an image trust service.

The work on this new service culminated with its public availability in the IBM Cloud in February 2018. The image trust service, called Portieris, is fully based on the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) open source project Notary , according to Michael Hough, a software developer with the IBM Cloud Container Registry team. Portieris is a Kubernetes admission controller for enforcing content trust. Users can create image security policies for each Kubernetes namespace, or at the cluster level, and enforce different levels of trust for different images. Portieris is a key part of IBM's trust story, since it makes it possible for users to consume the company's Notary offering from within their IKS clusters. The offering is that Notary server runs in IBM's cloud, and then Portieris runs inside the IKS cluster. This enables users to be able to have their IKS cluster verify that the image they're loading containers from contains exactly what they expect it to, and Portieris is what allows an IKS cluster to apply that verification.

IBM's intention in offering a managed Kubernetes container service and image registry is to provide a fully secure end-to-end platform for its enterprise customers. "Image signing is one key part of that offering, and our container registry team saw Notary as the de facto way to implement that capability in the current Docker and container ecosystem," Hough says. The company had not been offering image signing before, and Notary is the tool it used to implement that capability. "We had a multi-tenant Docker Registry with private image hosting," Hough says. "The Docker Registry uses hashes to ensure that image content is correct, and data is encrypted both in flight and at rest. But it does not provide any guarantees of who pushed an image. We used Notary to enable users to sign images in their private registry namespaces if they so choose."

"After contribution to CNCF of both TUF and Notary, we perceived that it was becoming the de facto standard for image signing in the container ecosystem", says Michael Hough, a software developer with the IBM Cloud Container Registry team.

The key reason for selecting Notary was that it was already compatible with the existing authentication stack IBM's container registry was using. So was the design of TUF, which does not require the registry team to have to enter the business of key management. Both of these were "attractive design decisions that confirmed our choice of Notary," he says.

The introduction of Notary to implement image signing capability in IBM Cloud encourages increased security across IBM's cloud platform, "where we expect it will include both the signing of official IBM images as well as expected use by security-conscious enterprise customers," Hough says. "When combined with security policy implementations, we expect an increased use of deployment policies in CI/CD pipelines that allow for fine-grained control of service deployment based on image signers."

The availability of image signing "is a huge benefit to security-conscious customers who require this level of image provenance and security," Hough says. "With our IBM Cloud Kubernetes as-a-service offering and the admission controller we have made available, it allows both IBM services as well as customers of the IBM public cloud to use security policies to control service deployment."

Now that the Notary-implemented service is generally available in IBM's public cloud as a component of its existing IBM Cloud Container Registry, it is deployed as a highly available service across five IBM Cloud regions. This high-availability deployment has three instances across two zones in each of the five regions, load balanced with failover support. "We have also deployed it with end-to-end TLS support through to our back-end IBM Cloudant persistence storage service," Hough says.

The IBM team has created and open sourced a Kubernetes admission controller called Portieris, which uses Notary signing information combined with customer-defined security policies to control image deployment into their cluster. "We are hoping to drive adoption of Portieris through its use of our Notary offering," Hough says.

IBM has been a key player in the creation and support of open source foundations, including CNCF. Todd Moore, IBM's vice president of Open Technology, is the current CNCF governing board chair and a number of IBMers are active across many of the CNCF member projects.

"Given that, we see CNCF as a safe haven for cloud native open source, providing stability, longevity, and expected maintenance for member projects—no matter the originating vendor or project," Hough says. Because the entire cloud native world is a fast-moving area with many competing vendors and solutions, "we see the CNCF model as an arbiter of openness and fair play across the ecosystem," he says.

With both TUF and Notary as part of CNCF, IBM expects there to be standardization around these capabilities beyond just de facto standards for signing and provenance. IBM has determined to not simply consume Notary, but also to contribute to the open source project where applicable. "IBMers have contributed a CouchDB backend to support our use of IBM Cloudant as the persistent store; and are working on generalization of the pkcs11 provider, allowing support of other security hardware devices beyond Yubikey," Hough says.

The company has used other CNCF projects containerd , Envoy , Prometheus , gRPC , and CNI , and is looking into SPIFFE and SPIRE as well for potential future use.

What advice does Hough have for other companies that are looking to deploy Notary or a cloud native infrastructure?

"While this is true for many areas of cloud native infrastructure software, we found that a high-availability, multi-region deployment of Notary requires a solid implementation to handle certificate management and rotation," he says. "There are new projects addressing these challenges, including within CNCF. We will definitely be following these advancements with interest. We found the Notary community to be an active and friendly community open to changes, such as our addition of a CouchDB backend for persistent storage."

I choose a case study on BBC Studios adoption of IBM’s Turbonomic, the case study offers the challenges faced by an organization og managing a IT infrastructure, particularly with regard to performance optimization and cost management. One key takeaway is the transformative impact of leveraging AI-powered automation to address performance issues and optimize resource allocation. By implementing Turbonomic, BBC Studios gained full-stack visibility into their environment, allowing them to pinpoint root causes of performance problems and take proactive measures to address them. This not only led to a significant reduction in end-user complaints and downtime but also enabled the team to shift their focus from firefighting to strategic initiatives.

However, the case study also highlights some unintended consequences of the shift to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the sudden transition, there was a tendency to overprovision resources to meet immediate needs, leading to inefficiencies and wastage. While Turbonomic provided a solution for resizing workloads and reclaiming resources, this situation underscores the importance of proactive management and optimization, even in rapidly changing environments.

Cloud computing offers numerous advantages, including scalability, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness. Companies can easily scale their resources up or down according to demand, pay only for what they use, and benefit from the agility to deploy and manage applications more efficiently. Additionally, cloud computing allows for easier collaboration and remote work, as seen in the case study with BBC Studios’ transition to remote work during the pandemic.

However, there are also disadvantages to consider. These include concerns about security and data privacy, potential downtime or service interruptions, and the risk of vendor lock-in. Additionally, the cost of cloud services can escalate if not carefully managed, as highlighted in the case study with the tendency to overprovision resources during the pandemic. Companies must also consider the complexity of managing multiple cloud providers or hybrid cloud environments, which can introduce additional challenges in terms of integration and orchestration.

Regarding the IBM Cloud solution if I were working for BBC Studios, I would consider the merits of the solution in the context of our organization’s specific needs and goals. The case study portrays IBM Turbonomic as a valuable tool for optimizing performance and resource allocation, which aligns with BBC Studios’ objectives of delivering high-quality content while minimizing costs. However, it’s essential to conduct a thorough evaluation of the solution to ensure it meets our requirements in terms of scalability, and costs. Additionally, I would explore alternative options and consider factors such as vendor support and integration capabilities.

Transforming Cybersecurity: IBM & Palo Alto's AI Integration

The cybersecurity landscape is on the cusp of a significant transformation. 

AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) are rapidly changing how companies defend against ever-evolving threats. 

This trend may have reached a critical juncture with this week’s (15th May) partnership announcement between cybersecurity provider Palo Alto Networks and provider of hybrid cloud and AI IBM. 

"The security industry is at an inflection point where AI will transform businesses and deliver outcomes not seen before. It's a moment to accelerate growth and innovation,” Palo Alto Networks CEO Nikesh Arora said of the announcement. 

“Together with IBM, we will capitalise on this trend, combining our leading security solutions with IBM's pioneering watsonx AI platform and premier services to drive the future of security platformisation with complete, AI-powered, secure-by-design offerings."

This collaboration between two industry leaders has the potential to set the standard or serve as a use case for how AI is integrated into cybersecurity platforms industry-wide in the future.

AI in cyber: the current landscape

While AI has been a buzzword in cybersecurity for years, the widespread adoption of LLMs truly began in 2023 following the boom in GenAI. 

AI and LLMs offer a powerful way to analyse vast quantities of data, making them ideal for tasks like threat detection, vulnerability management, and incident response. 

Malicious actors can also leverage AI and LLMs to craft more sophisticated attacks and exploit vulnerabilities introduced by these models.

Therefore, this dynamic environment demands a new approach to cybersecurity, as traditional models with static software updates are increasingly made obsolete. 

The power of partnership

The Palo Alto Networks and IBM partnership aims to address these challenges by combining Palo Alto Networks' security solutions with IBM's Watson AI platform and security services.

By offering a comprehensive AI-powered security platform, it sets a precedent for the industry by highlighting the strategic areas it sees as of importance:

• Platform powerhouse: Palo Alto integrates with IBM's Watson AI, enhancing Cortex XSIAM for advanced threat detection and incident response.
• QRadar migration: Palo Alto acquires IBM's QRadar SaaS assets, facilitating a seamless transition to Cortex XSIAM for existing users.
• LLMs for automation: Integration of WatsonX LLMs into Cortex XSIAM enhances automation capabilities.
• Customer support boost: Palo Alto utilises WatsonX LLMs to improve customer support services.
• DevSecOps expansion: IBM strengthens its relationship with Prisma Cloud, integrating security into the software development lifecycle.

AI’s future in cyber

IBM Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna stressed the company’s partnering with the Palo Alto Networks team is about the “future of AI-powered cybersecurity innovation."

The partnership between Palo Alto Networks and IBM is a significant step forward that highlights the approach industry giants are considering when implementing the long discussed AI and LLMs into cybersecurity.

IBM’s customer was operating a suite of local market solutions to manage its products, its consumers, and the marketing campaigns associated with those products. The customer had software that handled most consumer interactions with the brand, including social network interactions, marketing offers, voucher generation, and product utilization. Field marketing personnel were also using specific solutions to engage new consumers, through registrations at events and following up with conference delegates.

Working closely with IBM, the customer realized there was an opportunity to merge those segmented functions and solutions into a unified global platform. The vision was that a unified environment would provide superior consumer engagement, global analytics, and a consistent user experience. All of this would result in faster go-to-market for its next-generation products.

In developing a solution architecture to fit the brief, the IBM team knew that they needed to develop a unified platform that had truly global reach, performed to requirements, and was scalable and highly reliable. The integrated architecture had to meet the requirement for scalable data storage while also providing a suitable environment for performing deep analytics on the stored data.

IBM determined that the Apache Cassandra® NoSQL database would be the platform architecture’s key technology to deliver the requirements of scalability, performance, and high availability. Apache Spark ™ was also identified as a key technology. The Cassandra Lucene Index plugin for Apache Cassandra was chosen as the most effective solution to provide low latency search string capability while integrating with Cassandra.
