டைரி Review: புரட்டப்படாத பக்கங்களின் சொல்லப்படாத கதை ஈர்த்ததா?

எதிர்காலமும், இறந்த காலமும் நம் பக்கத்திலேயே இருக்கும். ஆனால், எல்லோரின் கண்களுக்கும் தெரியாது. அப்படித் தெரிந்தால்..? அது தான் 'டைரி'. மேட்டுப்பாளையத்திலிருந்து உதகை செல்லும் பாதையில் உள்ள 13-வது கொண்டை ஊசி வளைவில் அதித விபத்துகள் நடைபெறுகின்றன. அதையொட்டி பல மர்மக் கதைகளும் கட்டவிழ்த்துவிடப்படுகின்றன. பல ஆண்டுகளாக தீர்க்கப்படாமல் நிலுவையிலிருக்கும் இந்த வழக்குகள் பயிற்சி காவலரான அருள்நிதி கைக்கு வந்து சேர, அவர் இது தொடர்பான விசாரணையில் இறங்குகிறார். பல திருப்பங்களைக் கொண்ட இந்த வழக்கில் இறுதியில் என்ன நடந்தது என்பது தான் 'டைரி' சொல்லும் கதை.

படத்தின் மையக்கரு உண்மையில் சுவாரஸ்யமானது. குறிப்பாக, படத்தின் இறுதிக் காட்சி நம்மை நெகிழவைக்கும் அதேசமயம் பேரார்வமூட்டுகிறது. படத்தின் பெரும் பலமே கடைசி ஒரு மணி நேரம்தான். அந்த ஒரு மணிநேரத்தை ஈடுக்கட்டுவதற்காக சுற்றி எழுப்பப்பட்ட சுவர்தான் மீதி நேர திரைக்கதை. எதிர்பார்ப்புடன் பாப்கார்னை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு திரையரங்கிற்குள் நுழைபவர்களுக்கு முதல் காட்சி மிரளவைக்கிறது. இனி பாப்கார்னுக்கு வேலையிருக்காது என அதை எடுத்து ஓரங்கட்டினால், அடுத்தடுத்து வரும் தேவையில்லாத காதல் பாடல், அயற்சி தரும் விசாரணை மீண்டும் பாப்கார்னை கையில் சேர்த்துவிடுகிறது.

முதல் பாதி முழுக்க கதையோட்டத்திற்கு எந்த வகையிலும் நியாயம் சேர்க்காத காட்சிகளே நிறைந்து கிடக்கின்றன. தவிர, 'இது ஏன் இப்படி சம்பந்தமே இல்லாம நடக்குது' நிறைய கேள்விகளையும், லாஜிக் மீறல்களையும் எழுப்பி விடுகிறது. ஆனால், இது எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் சேர்த்து நம்மை ஆச்சரியப்படுத்திவிடுகிறது படத்தின் கடைசி ஒரு மணி நேரம். முதல் பாதியில் லிமிடட் எடிஷன் போல அருள்நிதிக்கு குறைந்த காட்சிகளே ஒதுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன என்றாலும் இரண்டாம் பாதியில் மிரட்டி விடுகிறார்.

போலீஸ் கட்டிங், கம்பீரமான உடல், வலிந்து சிரிக்கத் தெரியாத உடல்மொழி என தனது வழக்கமான நடிப்பை இந்தப் படத்திலும் பதியவைக்க அவர் தவறவில்லை. அறிமுக நாயகியாக நடித்திருக்கும் பவித்ரா மாரிமுத்து நடிப்பில் தேர்ச்சி பெறுகிறார். ஆனால், இன்ட்ரோ காட்சியில் போலீஸ் என 'கெத்து' காட்டுவதற்காக காவல் நிலையத்தில் வைத்து குற்றவாளியை அடிக்கும் அவர், 5 பேர் ஒன்று சேரும்போது ஹீரோவின் உதவியை நாடுகிறார். பெண்களைக் காக்க எப்போதும் நாயகர்கள் தான் மீட்பர்களாக வர வேண்டுமா இயக்குநர் இன்னிசை பாண்டியன் அவர்களே? (பெண்கள் போலீசாகவே இருந்தாலும்). ஜெயப்பிரகாஷ், சாரா, தனம் உள்ளிட்ட பலரும் கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கு தேவையான நடிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்தியுள்ளன்னர்.

ஸ்லோவாக நகரும் திரைக்கதையில் இடைவேளையில் வரும் திருப்பம், இரண்டாம் பாதி ட்விஸ்ட்டுகள் வேகமெடுக்க உதவுகின்றன. குறிப்பாக பேருந்துக் காட்சிகள் முழுமையாக பார்வையாளர்களை எங்கேஜ் செய்கின்றன. தற்போதைய கதாபாத்திரங்களை கடந்த காலங்களுடன் இணைத்திருந்த விதம் அதற்கான எழுத்து புதுமையாகவும், ஆழமாகவும் இருந்தது படத்தை வெகுவாக ரசிக்க வைத்தது. பேருந்தில் ஏறும் காதல் ஜோடிக்கு அதிலிருக்கும் பயணிகள் இணைந்து திருமணத்தை நடத்திவைப்பது, அங்கு நடக்கும் சில மொக்கையான உரையாடல்கள் அயற்சி.

ஊட்டி, மேட்டுப்பாளையத்தின் குளிரையும், விபத்தின் வீரியத்தையும், குறிப்பாக இரண்டாம் பாதியில் பேருந்துக்குள்ளேயே நகரும் காட்சிகளில் கேமரா கோணங்களால் கண்களை கட்டிப்போடுகிறார் ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் அரவிந்த் சிங். இசையமைப்பாளர் ரான் ஈதன் யோஹான் பின்னணி இசை ஹாரர் காட்சிகளில் பயத்தை கூட்டிருக்கிறது.

மொத்தத்தில் இந்த 'டைரி'யில் எழுதப்பட்டுள்ள கடைசி சில பக்கங்களின் திரைக்கதையே அதன் எடையை கூட்டியிருக்கிறது. இறுதிப் பக்கங்களின் சுவாரஸ்யம், விறுவிறுப்புக்காகவும், அத்தோடு இறுதியில் வரும் பாடல் ஒன்றுக்காகவும் 'டைரி'யை படித்துவிடலாம்.

Diary Movie Review: An enjoyable blend of genres

Rating: ( 3 / 5).

Remember that old device, the 5-in-1 portable fan that would come with a light, FM, radio and an alarm clock as well? Debutant Innasi Pandian's Diary feels somewhat like that and is definitely as efficient. If I had to describe the film, I’d go, ‘A supernatural, emotional police procedural thriller with some romance and humour’, and yet, it feels insufficient. Diary is an all-in-one version of a feature film, ticking every genre out there.

Director: Innasi Pandian Cast:  Arulnithi, Pavithrah Marimuthu, Sha Ra, Chaams

Usually, when a film goes genre-hopping like Diary does, the ride feels bumpy, and in the worst cases, ends up bulldozing everything. Diary dodges this problem through witty writing and clever choices. For instance, Innasi chooses dark comedy and places a sarcastic man in danger, instead of throwing in slapstick comedy. The multidimensional characters smoothen the constant change in genre. This includes the notorious car thief, scarred by his childhood; the valiant Varadhan; and the funniest of them all, a man with a personal mission to accomplish before dawn.

Setting the mood is a crucial ingredient to make any thriller enjoyable and here, the cinematographer Aravinnd Singh and composer Ron Ethan Yohann do a brilliant job. They ensure that the occasional detours from the core story don't end up as hiccups.

Arulnithi is extremely convincing as the dutiful SI Varadhan. He delivers his career-best performance in Diary and has broken the second-half syndrome (where the final act ends up ruining the film) that some of his previous films like D block and Dejavu suffered from. I also quite enjoyed Sha Ra's comedy, and the sequence where he gets tired of the supernatural happenings and starts cussing is a blast.

Diary isn't free of blemishes though. The ideas for the emotional portions are interesting, but the execution is melodramatic. So often, the film also overfeeds information in the form of callback shots and verbose dialogues. I also didn’t like how the female lead, Pavithrah Marimuthu, is written as a caricature, both as a cop and romantic interest.

Enjoyment of Diary depends on what you seek in films. If you can’t stand randomness and expect your thrillers to be loyal to the genre, Diary may irk you. However, if you don’t mind unpredictability, then the film has the potential to take you on a crazy ride. In the hands of a laid-back writer, this film might well have failed to work. However, Innasi steers away from the conveniences in this film by clearly defining the atmosphere of the story. Placing this story in a hill station means that you get why a bus has to keep running, why phone calls don't work.

While Varadhan is searching for perpetrators in this film, I was occupied with my own search for the relevance of the film’s title—even though there’s a monologue that tries to justify it. Given the enjoyable blend of genres in this film though and the chaos within, a better title might have been another household item… Mixie.

Arulnithi's diary tamil movie review - film directed by innasi pandiyan.

Arulnithi's next film, Diary has released today in theatres and this one is his third release in the last 2 months. Diary is an investigative mystery thriller which happens to be Arulnithi's forte and it is directed by debutant Innasi Pandiyan. The teaser and trailer showed a good level of promise and made the film buffs curious. Has the film lived up to its promise? Well, here we go. 

STORY:  Varadhan (Arulnithi) is new to the Police force and he takes up the case of an unsolved murder of a newly married couple who were killed in their honeymoon in Ooty. As he embarks on the mission to resolve the case, he unravels several mysteries and comes across a series of unexpected incidents. What was the final outcome of the case and how did the case personally impact Arulnithi's life is what the film is about. 

SCREENPLAY, DIALOGUES & DIRECTION:  Diary has a promising plot and it keeps you interested to a fair extent. Of course, the film has a few slips here and there and some deviations, but overall, it manages to hold your attention with its neat writing. There is a certain level of smartness in the writing and the guessing game is on, until the pre-climax. While some of the twists and turns are predictable, the rest of them indeed take you by surprise and the way the dots are connected looks impressively done.

A handful of intelligent moments like these only make Diary a fairly watchable film despite some misses. The interval sequence and the climax reveal, especially have you hooked and the plot points are cleverly knitted. Debut director Innasi Pandiyan exhibits promise with his writing and decent execution.

On the downside, the horror angle doesn't really leave the impact that the director actually intends to. The balance between mystery and horror isn't convincingly done and it looks like the horror elements were just placed for the sake of it. There are some needless scenes that occupy the screen time in the first half and the team could have been made wise use of the scissors. The writing of certain characters looks unclear - like the heroine is shown as a bold and gutsy woman in the beginning, but when there is a situation for her to hit the rowdies opposite her, it is only the hero who comes to the rescue. A few more characters also needed a better arc. 

CAST:  Arulnithi has played his character with ease and he fits the part effortlessly. His earnest performance with conviction adds vitality to the serious mood of the film. Debutant Pavithrah Marimuthu as the female lead does her part well with the limited screen time she gets. Shah Ra manages to bring a few laughs at select places. The director should have extracted more from the performances of the fresh actors as the emotionally intense scenes are left with zero impact because of the amateur acting. 

TECHNICAL:  Ron Ethan Yohan's music is definitely a big pillar of strength for Diary, with regard to the BG score. The talented composer's pulsating score amplifies the overall impact of the scenes, keeping us hooked to the screens. Aravinnd Singh's cinematography is neat and the dark and eerie mood of the film is maintained throughout with interesting usage of colours. A major chunk of the film takes place inside a bus and Aravinnd plays well with the restricted surrounding. Due credits to the sound department as well, for the striking sound design work. However, the VFX looks tacky, especially in the accident portions, while the DI is also a letdown. 

SO?   Despite the shortcomings, Arulnithi's Diary is a likeable film for its smart writing!

Verdict: Interesting twists and turns make Diary a watchable thriller.

DIARY MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

Diary is a horror - thriller film written and directed by Innasi Pandiyan, and produced by Kathiresan under the banner Five Star Creations. The film has Arulnithi and Pavithra Marimuthu in the lead roles while Sha Ra, Jayaprakash, Kishore and others play supporting roles. The cinematography is handled by Aravinnd Singh and the music is composed by Ron Ethan Yohann.

Varadha, played by Arulnithi, is a newly recruited Sub Inspector in the police department. Each SI is given the task of choosing an unsolved case and solving it. Varadha's choice lands him up in Ooty, where he is assisted by Pavithra. On the other hand, the last bus from Ooty to Coimbatore leaves with very few passengers, and some of them start experiencing paranormal things. How the case related to the bus is what Diary is all about.

The way in which Diary starts off is intriguing and keeps us glued to the screen till a group of dacoits are introduced. The dacoits enter hotel rooms, kill couples and take away their gold, it holds our attention really well and keeps us on the edge of our seats.

But then, when the film switches to the bus portions, the pacing slows down rapidly. We start wondering where the film is headed, till the pre-climax sequence. The bus portion is where the horror elements kick in and they could have been written far better than just resorting to jump scares. The effort to genuinely evoke fear seems missing.

Arulnithi, despite being a part of so many thriller films, makes sure his character stands out here as well. It is a great skill to act in a number of similarly written roles, yet make sure each one is different. Debutant Pavithra Marimuthu also shines in the limited space she is given, and is someone to watch out for in her upcoming movies. The supporting cast do not have much scope to make an impression but generally none of them look amateurish at any point.

The dialogues in Diary are a perfect mix of brilliance and preachiness. The cleverness makes you applaud for a few scenes while the preachy/motivation quote type dialogues tire you. Ron Ethan Yohann's background score is highly effective and provides goosebumps in the thriller portions. But the same cannot be said about the songs, which are passable. The cinematography by Aravinnd Singh is impressive in the flashback sequence and gives the film what it exactly needs during the present day portions.

Overall, Diary could have been a far better film based on the potential the script had. But the tonal shifts between horror and crime thriller needed to be smooth, which is where the film mainly falters. It is one of those films where the audience knows exactly how better the film could have been, and feel genuinely sad that it didn't come out that way.

Arulnithi once again delivers a unique thriller that is worth watching down goes our diary movie review..

Arulnithi now has his third release in two months, with the form of Diary. Being one of Tamil cinema’s brand ambassador for thrillers, the actor ensures that he tries to make each film different from the other and pulls off his parts convincingly. In the same way, Diary is a thriller that starts off with a mystery element, but later on pulls in many other things that manage to pick our interest.

Varadhan Annadurai (Arulnithi) is a brand new cop entering the scene, and the first cold case he picks up leads him to Ooty, where he is made to work with Pavithra (Pavithra Marimuthu). As he dives deeper into the case, he and the people he meets on the way are led to a bus which is travelling from Ooty to Coimbatore. What happens to the different characters inside the bus, and what is the main reason why they all are brought together forms the crux of Diary. Innasi Pandiyan’s storyline is interesting, but instead of directly getting to the core, the first half is made to lag through the use of poorly written comedy that acts as a major speed breaker. Only when the story picks up pace, Diary gets all the more interesting and rams up a good pre-interval portion. In the second half, the film is filled with many twists and turns – some unpredictable and some predictable.

Arulnithi once again understands the true value of the script and delivers a performance that is apt to the requirements of the film. The actor is managing to show a difference between the different roles that he takes up.

The supporting cast of the film is packed with many young and lesser known actors who do a very good job and keep us glued.

The film is technically solid and has a chilling score by Ron Ethan Yohann, with the cinematography by Aravindd Singh being upto the mark.

On the whole, Diary is a well-packaged debut from Innasi Pandiyan that is eerie and intense at places. The comedy in the first half could have been avoided for a more seamless product, but at the moment, it gets through as a fine thriller to catch in theatres.  Diary Movie Review by Siddarth Srinivas

தயாரிப்பு - பைவ் ஸ்டார் கிரியேஷன்ஸ் இயக்கம் - இன்னாசி பாண்டியன் நடிப்பு - அருள்நிதி, பவித்ரா மாரிமுத்து வெளியான தேதி - 26 ஆகஸ்ட் 2022 நேரம் - 2 மணி 13 நிமிடம் ரேட்டிங் - 2.5/5 வித்தியாசமான ஒரு கதையை யோசித்துவிடலாம். ஆனால், அந்தக் கதையை ரசிக்கும் விதத்தில் கொடுக்கும் 'மந்திரம்' திரைக்கதையில்தான் இருக்கிறது. மையப் புள்ளியிலிருந்து விலகாத, அதைச் சுற்றிய திரைக்கதைதான் ஒரு படத்தை மேலும் சுவாரசியமாக்கும். இந்தப் படத்தின் இயக்குனர் இன்னாசி பாண்டியன் கதையை மட்டும் வித்தியாசமாக யோசித்துவிட்டு திரைக்கதையில் தடம் புரண்டுவிட்டார். கடைசி இருபது நிமிடங்கள் மட்டுமே ரசிக்கும் விதமாக இருக்கிறது. படம் முடிந்துவிடும் என்று எதிர்பார்த்தால் அங்கும் முடிக்காமல் இன்னமும் நீட்டித்துப் போகிறார். முதல் படத்தில் முத்திரை பதிக்க வேண்டுமென என்னென்னமோ சொல்லி, எங்கெங்கோ இழுத்துச் செல்கிறார். சப் இன்ஸ்பெக்டர் போலீஸ் பயிற்சியை முடிக்கும் தருவாயில் இருப்பவர் அருள்நிதி. ஆவணக் காப்பகத்திலிருந்து முடிக்க முடியாத கேஸ்களில் ஒன்றை எடுத்து பயிற்சி பெறுபவர் விசாரிக்கலாம் எனச் சொல்கிறார் மேலதிகாரி. கண்ணை மூடிக் கொண்டு ஒரு கேஸைத் தேர்வு செய்கிறார் அருள்நிதி. ஊட்டியில் 16 வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பு நடந்த கொள்ளை, கொலை வழக்கு அது. அங்கு சென்று தன் விசாரணையை ஆரம்பிக்கிறார். ஒரு வழக்கை விசாரிக்கப் போய் மேலும் சில பல மர்மங்களுக்கான விடை தெரிகிறது. அவை என்ன என்பதுதான் இந்த 'டைரி'.

தனக்கான கதைகளைத் தேர்வு செய்வதில் அருள்நிதி தனி கவனம் செலுத்துவார் என்று பெயர் வாங்கியுள்ளார். இந்தப் படத்தையும் அப்படித்தான் தேர்வு செய்திருப்பார். ஆனால், இடைவேளை வரை அருள்நிதிக்கு திரைக்கதையில் ஒரு சில காட்சிகளை மட்டுமே வைத்து ஏமாற்றியிருக்கிறார் இயக்குனர். இயக்குனர் எழுதிய டைரியை அருள்நிதி முழுதாகப் படித்திருக்க மாட்டார் போலிருக்கிறது. அவருக்கான முக்கியமான பக்கங்கள் இல்லவே இல்லை. இடைவேளைக்குப் பிறகுதான் அருள்நிதி களத்தில் இறங்குகிறார். போலீஸ் கதாபாத்திரங்களில் 'பிட்' ஆக நடித்துப் பழகிவிட்டார். இந்தப் படத்திலும் அப்படியே. அருள்நிதிக்கு ஜோடி என்பதால் படத்தின் கதாநாயகியாக பவித்ரா மாரிமுத்துவைச் சொல்லலாம். ஊட்டி போலீஸ் ஸ்டேஷனில் சப் இன்ஸ்பெக்டராக வேலை பார்ப்பவர் பவித்ரா. இவரைப் பார்த்த உடனேயே அருள்நிதிக்குக் காதல் வந்துவிடுகிறதாம். படத்தில் ஊட்டியில் இருந்து கோயம்புத்தூருக்கு நள்ளிரவில் புறப்படும் ஒரு பேருந்து தான் முக்கிய கதைக்களம். அதில்தான் அதிக காட்சிகள் நடக்கிறது. அப்பேருந்து பயணிகளாக சிலர் நடித்துள்ளார்கள். அவர்களில் ஷாராக்கு மட்டும் அதிக வசனம், அதுவும் இரட்டை அர்த்த வசனங்களைப் பேசி நெளிய வைக்கிறார். சாம்ஸ், ஜெயப்பிரகாஷ் ஆகியோரும் படத்தில் உண்டு. மீதிப் பேர் நமக்கு அதிகம் தெரியாத முகங்கள். ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் அரவிந்த் சிங், இசையமைப்பாளர் ரான் ஈத்தன் யோஹான் இருவரும் படத்தை எப்படியாவது தரம் உயர்த்திக் காட்டிவிட வேண்டும் என கடுமையாக உழைத்திருக்கிறார்கள். படத்தின் ஆரம்பம் நன்றாகத்தான் ஆரம்பிக்கிறது. ஊட்டிக்குச் சென்ற பின் அருள்நிதி விசாரணையை ஆரம்பித்தவுடன் வேறு கோணத்தில் படம் செல்லும் என்று எதிர்பார்த்தால் ஊட்டி கொண்டை ஊசி வளைவு போல படம் சுற்றிச் சுற்றி போகிறது. படத்தில் பாராட்டப்பட வேண்டிய ஒரு முக்கிய அம்சம், கிளைமாக்சுக்கு முன்பாக நடக்கிறது. அது மட்டும் நாம் சிறிதும் எதிர்பார்க்காத ஒன்று. இதுவரை வந்த தமிழ் சினிமாவில் அப்படி ஒரு திருப்புமுனையை எதிர்பார்த்திருக்க மாட்டோம். அந்த திருப்புமுனை போலவே முழு படத்தையும் யோசித்திருந்தால் 'டைரி' நீங்கா நினைவைத் தந்திருக்கும். டைரி - சரியாக எழுதப்படாமல்…

All you need to know about Arulnithi's Tamil thriller 'Diary'

The upcoming Tamil film Diary , starring Arulnithi in the lead role is one of the most awaited projects of the actor. Director Innisai Pandiyan, who has co-written "Chiyaan" Vikram's upcoming film Cobra , is making his directorial debut with this film. As the movie is gearing up for release on Friday (August 26), here is all you need to know about the project.

Trailer promised an intense drama

The trailer of Diary was dropped by the makers back in July, which hinted at a nail-biting thriller. It introduced Arulnithi as a cop, leading a team of investigative officers to find out about the mysterious deaths in Tamil Nadu 's hill station Ooty . It showed the leading man carrying out numerous investigative proceedings and surviving dangerous situations to solve an age-old case.

Film certified with U/A from CBFC

The makers announced last week on social media that the film has been awarded a U/A certificate by the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC). It is anticipated that the film will be an investigative thriller. Financially backed by S Kathiresan under the Five Star Creations banner, with Sekar Babu co-producing it, Udhayanidhi Stalin is distributing the film under his Red Giant Movies banner.

Meet the cast and crew of 'Diary'

Besides Arulnithi, the film has Pavithrah Marimuthu as the leading lady. Aadukalam Kishore, Jayaprakash, Sha Ra, Thanigai, and Dhanam will be seen playing key supporting roles. Reportedly, the film is based on a true story. Ron Ethan Yohann has composed music and background score for the film, which has cinematography by Aravinnd Singh and editing by SP Raja Sethupathi.

Arulnithi has 'Demonte Colony 2' in his lineup

Meanwhile, Arulnithi was last seen in Dejavu and D Block . He has the sequel of Demonte Colony in his line-up. Ajay Gnanamuthu, who helmed the original 2015 film, is expected to bankroll the sequel. During the sequel's announcement, Gnanamuthu also revealed that they have plans to make it a franchise. Besides this, Arulnithi has a yet-to-be-titled project with director Gowthamraj in his kitty.

Diary movie review

Arulnithi is a new cop in the city. He is assigned to handle a cold-blooded case in Ooty where he has to work with Pavithra Marimuthu.

During his investigation he comes to know about a bus from Ooty to Coimbatore.

What is going to happen to the bus, how is that connected to Arulnithi’s case forms the rest of the story.

Directed by Innasi Pandiyan, the movie has an intriguing story. However, better writing would have made the movie all the more interesting.

The screenplay in the first half is slow. However, it picks pace in the second half.

There are enough twists and turns in the second half to keep the audience interested.  Arulnithi has once again proved his mettle with good script selection.

He delivers a satisfying performance. Rest of the cast have also done their part well.

Music by Ron Ethan Yohan is impressive and is one of the strengths of the movie.

Cinematography by Aravindd Singh is very appealing.
